dear readers, These issues have been harder and harder to put together. Not because I don’t have a great time, I absolutely love all the people who work for this magazine. But sometimes life just gets a little crazy and uninspiring and right now I am at that point. For this reason, the magazine will be taking a break for two months. The Wild Ones main goal was to give back. When Shane Black, Joel Robison, and I starting planning the trip last October, we wanted it to be one of shared passions, compassion, and giving. After hosting eight workshops in seven different cities we hoped to have accomplished just that. It's a humbling experience meeting people that have followed your work for so Writing and candids by Sarah Ann Loreth long. To hear the words, "You are my biggest inspiration" or "You are the reason I started photography" or "You've changed my life."

It's an amazing thing. And one that hits you hard every single time. At home we forget the effect we have on people. We get into this mode where we create and post never realizing the full scope of how our work encourages others or inspires them. But to go out there and teach and meet the people that have called themselves a fan for so long, people that have encouraged you, it's an amazing opportunity. And an opportunity we will cherish the rest of our lives.

Through traveling more than 10,000 miles, 33 states, and most of the major cities in a two month period, we tried to share as much joy and passion as we could muster. We met so many new friends along the way and connected with old ones all over the country. We shared floorspace with kind strangers and took new aquaintances out to meals. We taught, we laughed, we sweated in the 110 degree heat in the desert. It was perfect. It was lifechanging. It was everything I ever could have hoped for and nothing I ever could have expected. In those two months we packed in so many once in a lifetime opportunities. I never would have imagined I'd be teaching a workshop in Central Park in New York City or that I would teach Coca-Cola employees at their headquarters in Atlanta. Every single day was an adventure in a new place with new faces. And I couldn't have shared the experience with better people.

Joel and Shane became my family, my best friends, my brothers. Spending every moment with them for two months was my joy and pleasure. I'm not going to say it was easy. We all had our days of utter exhaustion and grumpiness but it only served to make use closer. I never could have imagined I could feel so connected and so loved by strangers I met on the internet. But the memories we shared and the community we worked hard to create will always be a testiment to our journey together and our shared goal of giving.

The future of The Wild Ones is uncertain but we are unbelievably proud of the community of artists and kind souls we have helped bring together. We hope to keep the group alive and to have this journey become a yearly event. We want to spend our time giving back. We want to take the summers to travel and share our joy and knowledge. And we hope to work hard each year to make that possible. But until then we hope you find inspiration in our journey and our goal.

I S A B E L L A TA N Which workshop did you attend? Why did you want to go?

I attended the New York Workshop. It was the last one they did. I wanted to go because...photography saved my life. It literally saved my life and gave me a purpose and it started from my love of art and my love of making others happy but it grew and became my passion through inspiration. Sarah Ann Loreth was one of my first few inspirations (amongst others like Brooke Shaden, Miss Aniela, Kirsty Mitchell) into conceptual photography.

The list has grown obviously but she was still my first. I discovered Joel and Shane through her and fell in love with their work too. I just had to meet them and learn from them. I wanted to be better, I wanted to grow as an artist and I wanted to learn more.

How did the workshop affect you as a person? How did it affect your art?

My eyes were opened more. I loved the work I did with them, the things they pushed me to do and the ideas I got after. I felt even more inspired, if that was even possible. My passion was relit, I was bursting with more ideas and thoughts...

I was in bliss. It taught me more about lighting and the importance of detail and conceptual work. I’ve been practising more with those.

I’ve always done some conceptual but I’ve focused a lot on Fashion photography--this gave me my love for fine art back.

Sarah, Joel and Shane were wonderful. They were patient and willing to share their skills and teach us what they know. I love them and miss them already. They pushed me to join flickr! Yay! Quiescent Magazine

J U S T I N KU D E R Which workshop did you attend?

I attended the one in Dallas, TX Why did you want to go?

I really wanted to be able to meet my photography idle (Joel Robison) and learn from him mostly, but i knew that Shane and Sarah were pretty amazing too! I was actually lucky enough to be the kid that they flew out to Dallas to meet and stay with them for a few days! I live in southern Illinois and I couldn’t have been able to go if they wouldn’t have been kind enough to send me down there. Now I’m not only grateful of the experience but it’s nice that I can say that they were once my role models/idles and now they are friends of mine!

How did the workshop affect you as a person?

The workshop affected me in so many different ways. I learned from my idles. I even was lucky enough to play laser tag and putt-putt golf with them (which I lost at) They were there every second of the day and still are today to help me with whatever I need. Whether it be editing, planning an idea, or just to talk! Definitely an experience I will never forget!

How did it affect your art?

The workshop helped me grow immensely as a photographer. Joel is always sending me positive thoughts such as, “ I’ve already seen such huge growth in you and your work in the last few months so I know that you’ll be pushing yourself even further now.” it always helps to hear such kind words from someone you look up to I just really can’t ever thank them enough for giving me such a great opportunity Thank Joel, Sarah, and Shane <3 love you guys!

K AT E LY N O L I V E R I attended the Los Angeles Wild Ones workshop.. I wanted to go because I have followed Sarah, Shane and Joel for a long time. They each inspire me in their own way and I feel that I can relate to them all on one level or another. They’ve unknowingly led me along my journey in photography, and I’ve grown right beside them. Seeing them live their lives to the fullest and experiencing some of the most amazing things made me want to attend; I have always wanted to live a life like that, and I guess I felt that if I could just meet them, maybe I’d be able to do it myself. I wasn’t wrong. Meeting Wild Ones really solidified my decision to step outside of my comfort zone. As cheesy as it sounds, between photography and watching them do the same, they saved me.

As a person, I can say that the workshop changed me and helped me grow. I struggled with a lot of personal things, from my college choices to being afraid to travel..

I was encouraged to do what I want to do with my life, not what other people expect of me, and I’m starting by switching schools and traveling the entire west coast. It’s a small step for some but a huge step for me, a person who struggled with agoraphobia and anxiety. My art has changed, too, in that I think a lot more when I’m editing- I don’t rush through my edits. I think things out and I attempt to tell a story- I remember the little details and I more often than not, when struggling, resort to “what would Shane/Joel/Sarah do?”

For me, meeting the Wild Ones was sort of like coming home. I ditched a family reunion that day to meet them and I was promised much laughter and awkward family photos.. both of which I got. They are open, warm and friendly people, and if anybody has the opportunity to meet them in their lifetimes I highly recommend it. You will never feel more comfortable than you do when the three of them are making jokes at one another’s expense, or recounting tales of their journey, or giving you inspiration you didn’t know you needed.

RILEY MEDCALF Which workshop did you attend?

The Portland workshop.

Why did you want to go?

Sarah was the first person I found doing conceptual photography and I fell completely in love with it. Through flickr, I discovered numerous other photographers who were just absolutely amazing. When I learned about the workshops I knew I had to get to one; I wanted to be able to meet and learn from Sarah, Joel, and Shane. The three of them are so fantastic at what they do and they’re huge inspirations in my life.

How did the workshop affect you as a person?

It helped me become braver about going after what I want in life; I realized I don’t need to be so worried about whether or not I’m on the right path for the future. If I want to do photography or travel or anything really I can make that happen.

How did it affect your art?

I used to have a really hard time coming up with something new, but I have so many more ideas now! It was so helpful to learn the different ways everyone conceptualizes, and it’s helped me learn to slow down and plan things out more so that the outcome is as close as possible to what I’ve imagined.

S A N D R A AYA L A I attended the Nyc workshop at Central Park.

I wanted to attend the workshop because I have been following them since their very humble beginnings :) I really related more to Joel because I have a son who suffered through a horrible experience with bullying and when Joel wrote his blog on bullying, I was even more determined to fight for my son. So that he can grow up to overcome and become a wonderful soul, such as Joel.

His kind words and overall kindness is why this world still has some good in it among all of the dark stuff we go through as humans.

I remember waking that day and thinking that I was about to meet 3 amazing people and hopefully learn from them and I just felt honored that they had gone through changes to share a bit of their time with myself and the other workshop members. You have to be a selfless person, to leave your job and hit the road in order to share your gift with others.

My art is always positively affected when I browse through their portfolios, it was just a plus that they were right in front of me...I’m inspired and pushed to create beautiful pieces that speak to a person because of people like Sarah, Joel and Shane...

I will be attending any future Wild Ones workshops if they continue to do them...not only to learn but to just be in the presence of goodness :)

DIANE LOEGERING I attended the workshop in DC located at Fort Hunt Park. The reason why I wanted to attend a workshop hosted the Wild Ones was because they happen to be a big inspiration to me as well as I’m intrigued by conceptual art and I wanted to get some insight on how they went about planning and editing their work.

As a person, I think the workshop affected my by giving me the opportunity to meet such wonderful people I never thought I could I ever meet. Being around different photographers and seeing how they go about getting their “perfect shot” showed me that each person has their technique on how to get their finish product. By going to the workshop, I think it affected my work by how I plan a photo shoot. Normally I just take photos spontaneously depending on the location I happen to be in or pass by as well as the mood I’m in at that moment. Now, if I have ideas, I write and draw them in a notebook so I can always go back to it and add on some ideas as the day goes by. So far it seems to be working, and I think it’s effective because if at that given moment

I don’t want to shoot that particular concept, I can always go back to it.

I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to meet such amazing people like Shane, Sarah and Marley. They were all really nice and friendly to be around. They’re wonderful people, with interesting stories on how they happen to come across photography in their lives. In each of their stories, I had some connections on how I fell in love with photography and always want to keep it in my life. I had fun at the workshop and met some spectacular people that I hope to call friends. Hopefully in the near future I’d be able to attend another workshop and see them again, including Joel.

J O S H UA C L O U D I attended the LA workshop. I wanted go because I had always wanted to go to a workshop but they always seemed to cost so much but this one was very reasonably priced and some of biggest inspiration were the instructors. I mean, how much better could it have gotten!

The Workshop really helped me grow as a person, I’m terribly shy when meeting new people and my mom (who was so amazingly kind to drive me up to LA) had to practically kick me out of the car once we arrived because I was so nervous. But once I got the chance to actually talk to all the other photographers including Sarah, Joel, and Shane, I started to open up and got to know some of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The experiences really taught me to put my self out there more often and even though I will most likely be incredibly anxious at first, it’ll pay off in the end. The workshop also helped immensely with my art. I learned how to really visualize and conceptualize a piece, and that taking my time in each step of the process will pay off in the end. Since my time with the Wildones my concepts seem to be growing continuously stronger.

The workshop was truly one of the greatest days of my life. It opened doors that I would never have imagined possible a year ago. Joel, Sarah, and Shane made me feel so welcomed when I arrived at the workshop and I am truly humbled to be able to call all of the magnificent people I met there my friends. I have found a community that where I truly feel accepted within the Wildones and hope to attend their workshops for years and years to come.
