Dubawi’s New Zealand connection The second interesting fact regarding Dubawi is that in 1977, New Zealander James Sarten (of “Belle” family fame) imported a mare named Pantoufle, a daughter of Panaslipper (Solar Slipper). She was 13 at the time, had had eight foals in England and arrived in New Zealand carrying a foal by Northfields (Northern Dancer). What Sarten was not to know was that the great Dubawi would be a direct descendant of Pantoufle. Her 1970 daughter Sunbittern (Sea Hawk II) produced Italian Group 1 winner High Hawk (Shirley Heights), the dam of triple Group 1 winner and leading sire In The Wings (Sadler’s Wells). Another of Sunbittern’s daughters, High Tern (High Line), would foal the 1998 Epsom Derby winner High-Rise (High Estate). High Tern also produced Jawaher (Dancing Brave), the granddam of Dubawi.

A Glimpse Into The Future

ARMED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THE READY TO RUN SALE THERE IS EVERY REASON TO THINK THAT THE UPCOMING YEARLING SALES WILL DO JUST FINE WITHOUT THE PHYSICAL PRESENCE OF OFF-SHORE BUYERS The sale was a fantastic success and underlined how resilient the industry is even when presented with major hurdles. On that basis, New Zealand Bloodstock have to believe that the annual yearling sales series will be very successful in 2021

Innovation plus technology “Transparency” became a key word, popularised at the 2020 Ready to Run Sale. Information about each lot was complete and detailed, which meant that buyers were able to confidently make purchases off-site using the new technologies available. The only difference between selling yearlings and twoyear-olds is the absence of breeze-up videos. A further part of the success formula initiated in November was the later daily start time of 1:00pm which allowed buyers in Australia and, more particularly, Asia to participate through live-streaming or via NZB’s digital portal. This innovation paid off in spades. Armed with the knowledge gained from the Ready to Run Sale there is every reason to think that the upcoming yearling sales will do just fine without the physical presence of off-shore buyers. Coronavirus created a need for thinking

Savabeel’s domination to continue There is no doubt that Waikato Stud’s Savabeel (Zabeel) will yet again underpin Book 1. Boxing Day at Ellerslie was further proof of his dominance when three of the four stakes races went his way. Two (Brando and Amarelinha) made big impressions with their maiden stakes success while Concert Hall and Supera quinellaed the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m). A Zabeel (Sir Tristram) classic indeed. The importation of Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) by Patrick Hogan (now Sir Patrick) in 1976 is still being strongly felt some 45 years on. Sir Tristram, his son Zabeel and grandson Savabeel have become giants of the New Zealand breeding industry. It is difficult to imagine what today’s sales catalogues would look like without them. Savabeel is now 19 and we can expect his relevance within the overall sales scene to continue for a few more years. Yet “what’s next?” applies to him also. Is there a son to continue the line? arraman Park Stud will be hoping that lightning can strike twice with Hellbent, touted as the potential heir apparent to his all-

conquering sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit). The William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner, successful in each season he raced from two to five, has a very similar profile, both physically and on paper, to his sire - the major difference is that he managed to tick the box of Group 1 winner. Hellbent, who had the largest contingent of all of the freshmen stallions at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, will have two yearlings across the Tasman.

COOLMORE STUD, NSW

outed by many as the potential heir to Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Merchant Navy boasts the pedigree and the form page to suggest he should have

every chance to fill his sire’s tremendous shoes. A breathtaking winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), flying home from a seemingly impossible position to defeat a field that included five Group 1 winners and many of the best threeyear-olds around, Merchant Navy then became a dual hemisphere performer by adding the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot. Out of the Group 1-placed Legally Bay (Snippets) and a sister to Coolmore Stud Stakes runnerup Jolie Bay, Merchant Navy boasts a similar pedigree profile to his sire. n a short racetrack career, Arrowfield Stud’s Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) - a $700,000 yearling who raced in the James Harron green and gold - was

able to win two pivotal races in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), while he also managed to finish runner-up in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) behind Catchy (Fastnet Rock). Add that to a pedigree which descends from the champion broodmare Summoned (Crowned Prince),

with

close

relatives

including

champion filly Melito (Redoute’s Choice) and Group 1 placegetter You’re So Good (Savabeel), and he shapes as a successful stallion prospect. Throw in that the family has produced stallions like Summoned’s sons Zeditave (The Judge) and Alannon (Noalcoholic) as well as the consistent Jet Spur (Flying Spur) and there are a number of ticks for Pariah. measure of Russian Revolution’s sheer speed is the fact that he became the first horse since the great Schillaci (Salieri) in 1992

to win both The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) and the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m), widely considered the fastest races in Sydney and Melbourne respectively. Russian Revolution achieved the feat across seasons, too, making him a Group 1 winner at three and four. Add in a victory in what is one of the leading stallion-making threeyear-old events, the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), and Russian Revolution has a lot of positives to his name, especially given that his wins in those races saw him defeat horses like Redzel (Snitzel), Astern (Medaglia d’Oro), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), She Will Reign (Manhattan Reign), English (Encosta De Lago) and Hellbent (I Am Invincible). While he may track back to a family filled with stamina, the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) is all speed and looks certain to produce precocious types. Russian Revolution has four yearlings in the catalogue. RACE RECORD

While Spieth was restricted to sprinting trips, never stretching out beyond 1400 metres, his three-quarter brother Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park) has been placed in four Group 1 races over the tough Randwick 1600 metres. His dam Stella Livia (Titus Livius) is also a half-sister to 2000-metre Group 1 winner and 2400-metre Group 1 runner-up Ransom O’War (Red Ransom), so his pedigree creates some intriguing questions for prospective buyers.
