Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Points prove a great beginning for horses who reach National stage
O
N ONE day in the year racing can be sure of making the sporting headlines. Whatever happens, the Grand National always brings some great stories. Last year was something special with Rachael Blackmore riding Minella Times to a famous victory for JP McManus and Henry de Bromhead. In the background of that story, there was John Nallen, who saddled Minella Times for a maiden point-topoint at Belclare on April 9 2017. Exactly five years later he will be at Aintree on Saturday bidding to win the great race for the second time. Minella Times didn’t win that Belclare race. He fell when leading at the last, leaving a horse of Cormac Doyle’s to win, First Assignment. I’m always interested in seeing what happens to these promising horses we see as youngsters. First Assignment went to Ian Williams and turned into a good hurdler. He won three handicaps, including a valuable event at Cheltenham by nine lengths. On another occasion he was third to Paisley Park in a big handicap at Haydock. The placed horses from Belclare, Red River and Rough Night, also won races in Britain, and as well as Minella Times there was another very interesting horse in the race, the beaten favourite Passageway, who I rode to finish fourth for Pat Doyle. Passageway was by Stowaway. I rode him again at Loughrea the following autumn and got beaten a short head by a Colin Bowe runner. He looked very promising all the same. Not long after that, he joined Willie Mullins. He didn’t appear during the winter but Willie had him ready to run in a bumper at the Punchestown festival where he bolted up. Passageway’s future looked bright but he never ran again. That’s racing, I’m afraid. This was one of those cases when you wonder what might have been. The runner-up in that Punchestown bumper was City Island, who won the Ballymore Novices’ at the Cheltenham Festival the following March. And the third horse? Well, that was John Nallen’s Dromahane maiden winner Minella Indo, who won the Albert Bartlett at the same Cheltenham meeting and

Grade 1 novice hurdle at Naas. He’s an eight-year-old, the same age as four of the last six winners, Many Clouds, One For Arthur, Tiger Roll (first time) and Minella Times, and his trainer won the race with Numbersixvalverde. I’m very hopeful of a big run from him. You could make a good case for several other ex-pointers, including the recent JP McManus purchase Enjoy D’Allen, a Tinahely winner for Peter Flood, Escaria Ten, who won at Borris House for Liam Lennon, and Fiddlerontheroof who started off with Shirley Berry.

‘Blaklion won at Tinahely on his fourth start. On the track he’s won 11 races, the latest in December, just two days before his 13th birthday’
captured the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later. We can only guess what the future holds for the young horses we see running in point-to-points up and down the country every weekend. But we can be sure that some of them are going to be part of a big occasion at some stage in their careers. Look at the list of horses left in Saturday’s National. Out of the top 40 in the handicap, 19 started off in Irish point-topoints, almost 50 per cent. Minella Times tops the weights this time. At the bottom of the 40 is Blaklion, the 2018 RSA Chase winner still going strong almost nine years after Colin McKeever introduced him in a maiden at Durrow in May 2013. People sometimes wonder if we
ask too much of our youngsters. I don’t think so, because all the top handlers and a great many of the smaller ones too are experts in maintaining a difficult balance. Making sure their horses are mature enough to show themselves to good effect in advance of the sales without harming their long-term development. Blaklion won at Tinahely on his fourth point-to-point start. On the track he’s won 11 races, the latest at Haydock in December, just two days before his 13th birthday. You don’t get much more durable than that. In this year’s National, the horse I know best by a long way is Martin Brassil’s Thyestes Chase winner Longhouse Poet. I rode him to win a maiden at Boulta for Sam Curling and was also on board for his bumper win from the very talented Monkfish at Punchestown, for his maiden hurdle win at Navan, and when he was third to Envoi Allen in a
ITH any luck, we might see another boost for the pointto-point world on Saturday. Last week’s Scottish National seems a good omen. Like everyone on our circuit, I was delighted for Rob James, who rode Win My Wings to a brilliant win for Christian Williams. The Gold Well mare has come a long way since winning a mares’ maiden for Denis Moore at Lingstown in 2018. Looking back at the details of that Belclare maiden involving Minella Times got me thinking about whether we might have seen a similarly influential race at Lingstown last month. Walk In The Park gelding Barry The Butcher made a big impression in winning by ten lengths under Jack Hendrick for Cormac Doyle and the Monbeg partnership, and it was striking that the form was given a triple boost last weekend. Runner-up Croke Park, another son of Walk In The Park, won for Denis Murphy at Dromahane. Ballybeg Boss, who finished a distant third, was good enough to overturn a Colin Bowe-trained favourite at Castletown-Geoghegan. For good measure, Look To The West, who had weakened into fourth when falling at the last at Lingstown, ran out a ten-length winner of the mares’ maiden at Dromahane for Michael Murphy. She made all and Michael Sweeney got her into a really good rhythm in her jumping. Early days yet, but when those three horses walk around the ring at Aintree tomorrow, as supplementary entries to the Goffs UK sale, the prospective purchasers will be looking at horses with a future.

TALENT SPOTTER Jamie Sloan tells how a £450,000 deal created a lofty bar at the start of his career
I
T WAS a bit of a whirlwind start to my training career. I took over from Ian Ferguson in 2019 and my first runner was Gallyhill, who landed a four-year-old maiden at Kirkistown and then went on to top the Cheltenham sale when he was sold to Henrietta Knight for £450,000. I could have done with waiting a month to help me find my feet a bit more. When you have a success like that at the very start you set the expectations very high for yourself as you want to keep it there, and it was a bit of extra pressure to cope with. I had started riding racehorses in the summer holidays at Ian’s yard in Cullybackey when I was 12 and I caught the bug there, so it has all come full circle. Training was always what I wanted to do. I went to RACE [the Racing Academy and Centre of Education] and became a jockey, but that was just a stepping stone towards training.
‘A whirlwind start set expectations high. It was extra pressure’ I did my time riding out for Tracey Collins, Enda Bolger and a stint in France with Louisa and Philip Carberry, picking up different approaches to training along the way. Enda is a genius, I cannot stress that enough. Some things you would have been doing in his yard and you would be thinking to yourself, ‘Why are we even doing this?’ and then a week later it would all make sense. I was always dropping in and out of Ian’s in between and, when I returned from France, I came back to Ian and was working hard. He was wanting to hang it up, so he started to give me a lot more responsibility and led me into the role. It was a case of right time and right place. I’d learned a

lot from everyone and felt it was the time to step up. Every trainer approaches training differently and they have their own methods. There is no set rule for how you
should train a horse. I just picked up different things I liked from different yards and it seems to be working out. Of course, Ronnie Bartlett and Wilson Dennison have
been very supportive and it helps having two big owners like that in the yard. But these four-year-old maidens are so competitive; no matter how much money you spend, you still need to get the horses there right. I had Dusart here to run as a four-year-old for Ronnie, but he was just so big. He needed plenty of time so I told Ronnie I was going to put him out in the field – and it was the best thing we did. When we got him back we took him to schooling races at Navan, Kirkistown and Moira and had him ready to run but Covid struck and stopped point-to-points, so he went over to Nicky Henderson and won first time out over hurdles. We had him very streetwise for that and it was great to see him win that one.
I took Galvin to Cheltenham last year when he won the National Hunt Chase for Ronnie. We had broken him in as a young horse and he came back from Gordon’s every summer. It’s just a pity I didn’t have my track licence but I got to ride him out every day and it was a great experience. Covid has made things stopstart since I began training and then there were a couple of things I had to change this season as the horses just weren’t in form earlier on. It has turned a corner, though, and it was great to have Abbeyhill win by 13 lengths at Portrush for Wilson. I was expecting him to put up a performance like that. I had been very disappointed by his run at Kirkistown in the autumn, but in saying that, mine just weren’t right at the time and he was a weak horse who just needed time. I was glad he did it in the manner he did. I ran three five-year-olds at Portrush as it has been tough giving horses a run with all the cancelled fixtures up here and I have plenty left to run. There’s still room to grow, though. We’re always open to new owners and growth because it’s a numbers game and numbers get you winners.

Owners and trainers hoping for rain to stop match points MATCH races are unusual throughout the point-to-point season, which made last Sunday’s two matches at Rathcannon rare. In the five-year-old geldings’ maiden just two of 39 entries stood their ground, while the defection of Isaac Wonder before the open also reduced that race to two runners. Such small fields in youngerage maidens in particular will not have been welcome for commercially focused owners and trainers, with the fouryear-old maiden at Castletown-Geoghegan on the same day being contested by three horses from an entry of 33. The dry spell has played a significant part in field sizes, with point-to-pointing on the other side of the Irish Sea hit even harder on Sunday. There were five walk overs at five British fixtures, including the meeting at Cherrybrook, which featured two walkovers, three matches and 15 runners across the card’s seven races. Ahead of the busy Easter period, a wet forecast over the coming days would be very welcome to avoid any difficulties with small fields in Ireland.
Watch out for Shrewd Crossgales team
The retraining of racehorses
has been gaining greater prominence in recent years and last week Back It Up proved to be a shining example of the versatility of thoroughbreds. Ten days after he made his competitive debut in a fouryear-old maiden at Belclare when finishing a distant fourth behind for Benny Walsh, the four-year-old began his second career when contesting the thoroughbred event class as the Stepping Stones to Success competition at Wexford Equestr ian Centre on March 30 fe Jenny. under Walsh’s wife Jenny His adaptabilityy is a he testament to th husband-andwife team and the education their Crossgales stable provides to young horses, n also evident in he their results on th track and in the ssales ring. This season alone six of their runners have finished in the first three, generating profits on a number of value purchases relative to the sums being paid by others in the division. In recent days their Stormin Crossgales and Autumn Return were both among the winners for their new connections on
the racecourse, further highlighting the Crossgales team as a shrewd outfit to watch for the coming years.
Win My Wings soars from Lingstown to Ayr
Three consecutive weekends of Grand National action on the track in Scotland, England and Ireland began with an emphatic victory for point-topointing in the south-east with the outcome of last weekend’s Coral Scottish Grand National. Not only was Win My Wings e ridden expertly to her seven n-length victory by leading pointt o -p o i n t r i d e r R James (left), Rob but the Gold Well mare extolled the t talents of Denis Moore, with wh hom she began her pointing career at N Newtown Grange. The Wexford man saddled her to win a mares’ maiden at his local fixture at Lingstown in 2018 before she was sold for a mere £9,250. Moore may not have sent out a runner since the end of the 2018-19 season, however his silks were carried to success in the autumn by the Tom Byrnetrained Benefits Jeu.

Flood triumphs on familiar turf TEN years after landing the adjacent winners race as a jockey Peter Flood won it again as a trainer. The 2012 victory on Jack Monday was one of five Flood had as a jockey, and Sunday’s win with Beyond Redemption i n t h e O ’ D w y e r Ma s o n r y , Mullingar Agri, & Tullaghansleek Stud adjacent winners was his second in the race as a trainer. Georgie Benson guided the recent Portrush victor to beat last week’s Loughrea winner Cappajune Lady by threequarters of a length. The victory of the four-time w i n n i ng e ig ht- ye a r- o l d followed Flood’s 2019 success in the race with the Hugh Mulvihill-owned Star Wizard. Mulvihill, who was again fulfilling the role of clerk of the scales at the Westmeath venue, was represented in the INHSC & Tottenham Timber older geldings’ maiden by recent acquisition Knockiel Synge. However, the consistent eight-year-old again had to settle for third to the Barney O’Hare-bred Buzzard Trix. The lightly raced
eight-year-old, who was having his third outing, made amends for a costly mid-race departure when a well-backed favourite at Portrush in the autumn by defeating Toomebridge by four lengths for the father-and-son combination of Sean and Noel McParlan. In doing so, the Court Cave gelding repeated the feat of his brother Drumlee Castle, who also won an older maiden this season, when victorious at Portrush in October for Gary Dillon. Qu i n r i d e r Pau l O ’ Ne i l l ended a five-year wait for another victory between the flags when The Red Menace sprang a mild surprise in the Compas Stallions open. The eight-year-old had won five races under rules for Noel Meade before switching to the Ballinasloe yard of Shane Ryder, and this one-length defeat of Handy Headon marked his first success since making that move on his debut in the pointing fields. “We have a local meeting in Eyrecourt [Stowlin] in a month’s time, so it would be
nice to win there,” Ryder said. “He’ll stay point-to-pointing for the minute but we might go for a handicap chase in the summer if he shows that kind of enthusiasm.” Only three of 33 entries stood their ground for the Tattersalls NH four-year-old maiden, the result of which was a largely tactical affair as Ballybeg Boss and Amarillobymorning raced side-by-side throughout much of the final mile and a half. It was the experience of Ballybeg Boss that told as he produced the more assured leap at the final fence under Brian Dunleavy for a threelength victory. It completed a memorable 24 hours for his trainer Rob James, who had guided Win My Wings to an emphatic victory in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr the day before. “All he does is gallop and gallop,” Dunleavy said of his 11th victory of the season, which has moved him four wins clear of his rivals in the under-21 riders’ title race. “We quickened it up early as I wanted to turn it into a truly
run race, rather than letting it turn into a sprint. He did it well at the line.” The defeat of Amarillobymorning was a second visit to the runner-up spot for the Colin Bowe team, as Heaven Smart found Storminhome one and a half lengths too good in the Lynn Lodge Stud fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. Having finished a promising fifth on his debut at Ballyragget two weeks earlier when ridden

DONERAILE AT DROMAHANE SUNDAY
Teenage student O’Sullivan continues THE O’Sullivan family have long been synonymous with point-to-points at Dromahane, and 17-year-old Alan O’Sullivan had an afternoon to savour at the Mallow venue. The Leaving Cert student, younger brother of accomplished amateur Michael and son of Lovely Citizen’s Cheltenham Foxhunter winning rider William, partnered his first winner on his uncle Eugene O’Sullivan’s It Came To Pa s s i n t h e Fi t z g e ra l d Family novice riders’ open. The 12-year-old, who was ridden by his trainer’s daughter Maxine to win the 2020 Cheltenham Foxhunter, got into a lovely rhythm with his firsttime par tner on the w ellwatered conditions before he moved through to overtake long-time leader A Rated two out. It Came To Pass threw a fabulous leap at the final fence and then bounded clear to beat A Rated by ten lengths. “Alan is a good rider who works very hard and it’s great

that he won on It Came To Pass today,” O’Sullivan said. “It Came To Pass will continue pointing and be retired at the end of the season.” The Denis Murphy-owned and trained Croke Park went one better than when second to Barry The Butcher on his debut at Lingstown by landing the Goffs UK Aintree Sale fouryear-old geldings’ maiden under Harley Dunne. Croke Park travelled well as Helnwein and Isocrate cut out the running and, although sustaining interference from three out, the son of Walk In The Park moved through to challenge at the final fence. He is a close relation to Grand Annual Chase winner Oiseau De Nuit and was added to the sponsor ’s sale after racing at Aintree tomorrow. The Michael Murphy-trained Look To The West, who shaped well despite falling at the last fence when held in fourth spot on her debut in Croke Park’s Lingstown maiden, likewise booked her passage to the Merseyside boutique sale by galloping her rivals into submission in a truly run Tattersalls NH four-year-old mares’ maiden. The success also capped off a good weekend for the Gorey handler, who had saddled S a d i e’s P r i d e t o w i n ov e r hurdles at Wexford on Friday evening. Porter In The Park had been headed only on the run-in when denied a winning debut at Ballyarthur last month, however she swiftly made amends when coming out on top in the big-field Galileo Chrome mares’ maiden.

Having pulled up on his only previous outing at Tallow, the bay was another to benefit from front-running tactics and he was travelling best with a five-length advantage when his closest pursuer Quest With Speed fell two out. The s on of S ea Moon, a three-quarters brother to John Kiely’s Listed bumper placed mare Hi Stranger, then came home 16 lengths ahead of Sound And Fury. “He’s a horse who jumps and
travels. He’ll probably now be s o l d ,” Qu e a l l y s a i d o f t h e maternal grandson of Ebor Handicap winner Sesenta, who is owned by the Old Fools Partnership which includes breeder Michael Veale. O’Donovan doubled up on the Martin Fitzgerald-trained maiden Marriage Ring in the Dairygold mares’ winner-ofone. O w ne d and bre d by her handler’s father Joe Fitzgerald from Inch, the Dubai Destination mare was three lengths adrift of Mangan Sue when Patrick Doyle’s charge fell two out. Marriage Ring was then left clear to see off Presenting Ana. The old firm of Robert Tyner and Derek O’Connor combined to win the Hibernian Hotel & Buckley Bros older geldings’ maiden with newcomer Doubtcha Mossy Boy, named after owner Maurice Kelleher’s 14-year-old son Mossy. The six-year-old Doubtcha Mossy Boy led from two out to beat Theshoddytradesman by eight lengths.
Golden victory for Lyons and title-chasing Doyle SUSIE DOYLE moved a step closer in her quest for a first ladies’ title as she rode the first double of her career when Golden Bald won the Conack Construction older maiden. The six-year-old had offered a great deal of promise when finishing third at Comea in mid-February, and he stepped up from that by opening his account at just the third time of asking to defeat the much more experienced How’s Trix. The four-length victory for the Maresca Sorrento gelding supplied the Olympian Louise Ly o n s , w h o r e p r e s e n t e d Ireland in three-day evening at the 2008 games in Beijing, with her first victory in the pointing fields as a handler. “It’s great to get my first ever double,” Doyle said. “I’ve got great support throughout the season from a lot of handlers and I’m very grateful for it.” The 23-year-old rider had earlier teamed up with fellow Tipperary native Sam Curling when Some Are Lucky landed his tenth pointing victory in the Maurice Power Solicitors & Mount Coote Stud open. The 11-year-old, who had failed to make much of an impact on his first start over banks at Lingstown a month earlier, proved much too good for his only rival, as he returned 12 lengths clear of Ifeoinly to end a winless run for this prolific pointer stretching back to November 2020.

“He’s been an amazing horse for us over the last few s e a s o n s ,” t h e S k e h a n a g h stables operator said. “He might have another run in an open somewhere before heading on to Punchestown for a banks race.” The was one of two match races on the card which produced 30 runners across the six races, as Jack Burke also had to beat just one rival to claim the Rathmore Stud fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. The Sageburg gelding put his previous experience to good u s e a s h e b e at n e w c o m e r Iconic Flame by three and a half lengths. The victory continued a good recent run of fortunes for his We x f o rd h a n d l e r Ha r l e y Dunne, who has sent out two winners and four placed finishers from his last eight runners. The success of Jack Burke completed a double for Tomhaggard rider Tiernan Roche, as he had earlier teamed up with fellow Wexford man Mark Scallan to land the Goffs UK Aintree Sale fouryear-old auction maiden with Doyen Star. The €22,000 purchase had
plenty of supporters on hand to welcome him into the winner’s enclosure after he had beaten fellow newcomer Idefix De Ciergues by two and a half lengths. “This is a fabulous horse,” Jess Codd said of the Doyen gelding who he owns in partnership with his father and brother, both named Joe. “Everything has always come very easy to him since the day that we bought him out of the L a n d R o v e r s a l e . H e ’s a gentleman to do anything with at home too and will hopefully be sold now.” The Paul Leonard Construct i o n f o u r- y e a r- o l d ma re s’
maiden prize also went to County Wexford as the in-form Sean Doyle sent out his 13th winner of the season when Iorens made the best possible start to her racing career. Jamie Scallan had full confid e n c e i n t h e w e l l - b a cke d favourite and that belief was vindicated as she quickened clear after the last to beat Denis Murphy’s Passionate Pursuit by a widening five lengths. It was a much more dramatic conclusion to the Paddy McAuliffe Bookmaker, Tattersalls NH & Dunraven Arms five- and six-year-old mares’ maiden, as Milfordfourthree had looked to be in pole position to supply Limerick rider Ray Barron with his first victory in the pointing fields this season as they approached the final fence in the lead. However, the mare slithered on the landing and, although she somehow managed to regain her footing to stay in the race, she lost all chance of winning. That drama paved the way for Katie Dalie to come through to earn the spoils in the hands of Aaron Sinnott by beating the Belclare runner-up Super Dawn by three and a half lengths. Trained in Ballincollig by former rider Con McSweeney, the five-year-old could now contest a bumper at Easter.
