BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL ROYAL ASCOT REVIEW Sires Frankel and Dark Angel each supplied three winners at Royal Ascot this year, but Frankel took the leading sire title at the meeting on countback as he also fielded two runners-up and a third. The Banstead Manor Stud behemoth’s most impressive scorer was Mohaafeth, who travelled smoothly and shot clear to win the Hampton Court Stakes by clear water, with the classy pair Roman Empire and Secret Protector filling the places. Mohaafeth was bred by Philippa Cooper out of her Listed-winning Sea The Stars mare French Dressing, so his pedigree combines the two outstanding European colts of recent times. Cooper seems to have found the key to producing smart horses from Frankel, as she is also responsible for this season’s Dante Stakes winner and Derby third Hurricane Lane. Frankel’s other two scorers at this year’s royal meeting were bred along similar lines. Juan Elcano, who bounced back to form in the Wolferton Stakes after wind surgery, is out of Whatami, a daughter of Daylami, while Amtiyaz, a determined winner of the Copper Horse Stakes, is out of Rose Of Miracles, a daughter of Daylami’s half-brother Dalakhani. The matings double up on Miswaki through his wonderful blue-hen daughters Urban Sea (dam of Frankel’s sire Galileo) and Daltawa (dam of Daylami and Dalakhani). It would be no surprise to see breeders pair Frankel with more Daylami mares in particular, as the cross has produced St Leger hero Logician, Ribblesdale Stakes winner Frankly Darling, Listed scorers Collide and Juan Elcano as well as short-lived 93-rated novice stakes winner Invictus Spirit from just six runners on the Racing Post database. Dark Angel’s trio of winners at Royal Ascot included a Group 2 double courtesy of

by the Newmarket operation out of Angel Vision, a dual-winning daughter of Oasis Dream and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf victress Islington bought for 600,000gns when Ballymacoll

Stud dispersed its stock at the Tattersalls December Mares’ Sale of 2017. Islington’s paddocks career has been an unusual one, in that her first 11 offspring were all fillies; and although she was

an outstanding dual champion herself and has produced seven winners, not one has achieved any kind of black type. Berkshire Shadow shows that great racemares such as Islington often prove to be

excellent ‘dams of dams’ even if they don’t produce any stars of their own. Dark Angel, such a consistent source of fast and precocious winners, can take credit for sharpening up the pedigree too.

No qualms with decision to exclude geldings from Commonwealth field

WARM welcome to our Royal Ascot review supplement, the first of its kind and hopefully an enjoyable and fresh reflection on a fabulous five days last week. Martin Stevens and Nancy Sexton take a look at the breeders, broodmares and sires for whom the meeting was particularly kind, while Steve Moran from our sister title ANZ Bloodstock News assesses the action from an Antipodean perspective. No fewer than 28 different sires were responsible for the winners of the 35 races, a pleasingly high number, with no stallion boasting more than three winners, a total Frankel and Dark Angel managed. Mayson was one of three sires who

had a couple of winners, in his case two of the big sprints, the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, thanks to Oxted, and the Wokingham Handicap, via Rohaan. Rohaan would surely have gone close in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, having beaten the first-past-the-post in that race, Dragon Symbol, by a nose the time before, but as a gelding was not eligible. I would echo colleague Scott Burton’s words the day after the meeting on racingpost.com, where under the headline ‘No issues with Commonwealth conditions’, he resisted the temptation to bandwagon jump and expressed no concern that Rohaan had been unable to run. Geldings were allowed to compete

over the first five years of the contest’s existence while it became established, but notably only two of the 71 runners from 2015 to 2019 were geldings, with Limato doing best in the inaugural edition when second. It was never the intention that the race be open to geldings beyond the short term. Indeed, whether they should be allowed to compete is just not a debate worth having – it’s academic given that geldings being ineligible for age-restricted Group 1s is a fundamental European Pattern Committee ground rule, in place for the betterment of the breed. The 2,000 Guineas, Derby, St James’s Palace, St Leger, Middle Park, Dewhurst and Vertem Futurity are not open to geldings either; as well as obviously ruling out a

stallion career, being unable to participate in such races is simply one of the things connections of all colts have to consider before deciding on a gelding operation. Rohaan has turned out to be a far better racehorse than would have been anticipated when he was

gelded before making his debut as a two-year-old last autumn. But then, had he not been gelded, would he have become the high-class sprinter he is? As much as I like Rohaan, and his trainer David Evans, ditching a tenet of the sport, or turning a blind eye in the case of the Commonwealth Cup, is not the way forward. Good luck to Rohaan in any of the July Cup, Sprint Cup and British Champions Sprint, all of which he can run in. and broodmare sires whose progeny lit up last week’s extravaganza

Banstead Manor Stud colossus Frankel, with three winners, took leading sire honours at the meeting on countback

Cheveley Park Stud featured as the owner of Indie Angel, having bought the filly for 600,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale – making her the sire’s most expensive lot of that age. Bred by Ringfort Stud and Paul Hancock out of the Listed-winning Sir Percy mare Indigo Lady, Indie Angel is typical of her sire’s progeny in that she takes her racing so well. She ran three times at two and eight times at three when she graduated from handicaps to Group company, and she has now been out three times at four. Dark Angel’s third winner at Royal Ascot was one of the most impressive handicap scorers of the week. Real World, who stormed home to take the Royal Hunt Cup by nearly five lengths, illustrates how Godolphin has sent his sire some top mares since buying into him in 2015. He is out of Nafura, a dual-winning Dubawi half-sister to Group 1-winning milers Dubai Destination and Librettist, as well as the classy

pair Revolutionist and Secret Number. Dark Angel was not done there, as his son Art Power almost ran away with the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on the Saturday, making most and being caught only close home to finish third. He is out of the dual Listed-winning mare Evening Time. It pays a high compliment to the versatility of Yeomanstown Stud’s magnificent sire that his four Royal Ascot stars are out of mares from a wide range of sire-lines. Berkshire Shadow’s damsire is Oasis Dream; Indie Angel’s is Sir Percy; Real World’s is Dubawi and Art Power’s is Keltos. Three sires recorded two winners at the royal meeting, including Dubawi and his exciting son Night Of Thunder. Dubawi was on the mark with Creative Force in the Jersey Stakes and Kemari in the Queen’s Vase. Sadly, for Flat and National Hunt breeders respectively, both are geldings and so won’t be able to reproduce their talent. At least Naval Crown, fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and runner-up in the Jersey Stakes to give Dubawi a one-two in the race, is still entire. He was one of a pair of seconds for the sire at the meeting, along with Samoot in the Sandringham Handicap. The reason breeders are looking at sons of Dubawi as stallion prospects with renewed enthusiasm is his rapid rise as a sire of sires in recent seasons, thanks in large part to Night Of Thunder. At Royal Ascot last year, when Night Of Thunder had only juveniles and three-year-olds to represent him, he fielded a winner and four place-getters. He shone again 12 months later, with a double courtesy of his daughters Lola Showgirl and Highfield Princess in the Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace handicaps. Highfield Princess is a half-sister to July Stakes winner Cardsharp out of Pure Illusion, by Danehill, while Lola Showgirl is out of Exempt, by Danehill’s son Exceed And Excel. The admirably tough Keep Busy, a close fifth in the King’s Stand Stakes, is by Night Of Thunder out of Look Busy, a mare by

another Danehill stallion in Danetime. As Copper Horse Handicap third Global Storm showed, though, Night Of Thunder is far from dependent on any particular nick. He is out of Travel, a multiple-winning daughter of Street Cry and a half-sister to ill-fated Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles. Nor is Night Of Thunder the only one flying the flag for Dubawi as a sire of sires at present. Another promising son, New Bay, posted a first-crop Royal Ascot winner with the progressive Perotto in the Britannia Handicap, while the late Poet’s Voice made his presence felt through Duke of Edinburgh Handicap third Zabeel Champion. The other sire who delivered two winners at Royal Ascot this year is perhaps the one who deserves most credit. Mayson stands at Cheveley Park Stud at only £4,000 this year, and his highest ever covering fee was his opening mark of £8,000, but he delivered King’s Stand Stakes hero Oxted and the remarkable Wokingham Handicap scorer Rohaan. For good measure, he also appeared as damsire of Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap winner Significantly, and he can probably claim plenty of the credit for the talent possessed by the colt, who is by the underwhelming Garswood. Mayson must rank as one of the best-value sires at stud at present, not least as he has also provided this season’s Cork Listed winner Laugh A Minute and Temple Stakes runner-up Ainsdale, but potential shoppers at the breeding-stock sales might do well to keep an eye on his burgeoning record as a broodmare sire. Mayson’s oldest daughters are only seven years old, and he has been represented by only five runners as maternal grandsire, but they include Significantly, Tom Dascombe’s dual-winning two-year-old filly Devious Angel and Aint Misbehaving, a juvenile colt who has won and run second on his sole two starts for Florian Guyader in France. Among the other budget-bracket sires who notched a winner at Royal Ascot last week were Awtaad

(stands at Derrinstown Stud at €10,000), whose daughter Create Belief hosed up in the Sandringham Handicap; Bobby’s Kitten (Lanwades Stud, £7,000), whose daughter Sandrine remained unbeaten in two starts in the Albany Stakes; and Havana Gold (Tweenhills, £7,500), whose son Chipotle struck in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Cable Bay, who is looking increasingly attractive at his fee of £8,000 at Highclere Stud, deserves special mention as the source of demoted Commonwealth Cup first-past-the-post Dragon Symbol and King’s Lynn, who looked unlucky when denied a

clear run in the King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday and who atoned when a solid third in the Wokingham on Saturday. The sire had also been on the mark with Listed Scurry Stakes scorer Atalis Bay on the Saturday before the royal meeting started, while his Temple Stakes-winning daughter Liberty Beach was a fair sixth in the King’s Stand. Kodi Bear is another good-value up-and-comer who deserves singling out for praise. Rathbarry Stud’s son of Kodiac landed just outside the bullseye with second-crop son Go Bears Go beaten a head into second in the Norfolk Stakes and first-crop daughter

Measure Of Magic running third in the Commonwealth Cup. Those results continue a fine sophomore season for the sire, which included Mystery Angel’s Pretty Polly Stakes success and Oaks second, and it is no surprise that he has been heavily oversubscribed at a fee of just €6,000 this breeding season. Galileo was the leading money-earner among the sires at the meeting, thanks to Love’s victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and placed efforts by Roman Empire, Wordsworth and Armory. That haul will help the Continues page 4

Coolmore colossus in his pursuit of a 13th British and Irish sires’ championship. He needs it, as he is currently at the top of the table but by a margin of only around £100,000 over his son Frankel, who had his three Royal Ascot winners and Derby first and third Adayar and Hurricane Lane to help swell his purse.

First-Season Sires Royal Ascot takes place less than three months into the Flat season and yet breeders are already fixated on first-season sire performance at the meeting. The freshman who would have impressed them most, and has been doing so all season, was Ardad. The Overbury Stud flagbearer, an easy winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes five years ago, supplied Norfolk Stakes scorer Perfect Power and Coventry Stakes third Vintage Clarets. Perfect Power was, just like his sire, bred by Tally-Ho Stud and sold to Blandford Bloodstock at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale for a six-figure sum. Out of the smart Frozen Power mare Sagely, he is a good advert for the power of breeze-up sales to showcase lots on the basis of their athletic abilities rather than pedigree alone, as he went

from a 16,000gns vendor buyback as a yearling to a £110,000 two-year-old. The Martin Broughton-bred Vintage Clarets, a stablemate of Perfect Power in Richard Fahey’s Musley Bank yard, was a much cheaper proposition as he was snapped up by the trainer for just £20,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. Ardad is certainly the talk of

the first-season sire ranks and deservedly so, as he has delivered 12 winners from 29 runners for a cracking strike-rate of 42 per cent as we went to press. One note of caution is that this early part of the season was always going to be the sire’s time to shine, as a precocious talent with a sharp and speedy page, and it will be interesting to see if he can

maintain momentum through to the end of the season. The other freshman sire to put a winner on the board at Royal Ascot was another previous winner at the meeting in Profitable. The 2016 King’s Stand Stakes hero, who has been well supported at Kildangan Stud, is the source of Queen Mary Stakes scorer Quick Suzy. Bred by Oghill House Stud and Jasleen out of the winning Marju mare Snooze, Quick Suzy was bought as a yearling for just €20,000 by the Dunphy family, famed for breeding and racing the numerous ‘Droopys’ champion greyhounds, and raced by them before she was sold to the US-based Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. Quick Suzy beat into second another daughter of a first-season sire in the Queen Mary, with Wesley Ward’s Twilight Gleaming finishing a length and a quarter adrift. The runner-up is by Irish National Stud resident National Defense, who like Profitable is a son of Invincible Spirit but has far fewer offspring to represent him than his paternal half-brother. Tally-Ho Stud’s freshman pair Cotai Glory and Galileo Gold also emerged from the royal meeting with credit. Cotai Glory achieved the impressive feat of fielding two runners-up from just two delegates – Eldrickjones, who finished hot on the heels of Berkshire Shadow in the Coventry Stakes, and Dig Two, who gave best only to Chipotle in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Neither colt cost the earth. Eldrickjones was a £10,000 yearling purchase by Anthony Ross resold by

Johnstown Stud to Nick Bradley Racing and Roger Fell for £26,000 at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale, while Dig Two was pinhooked by Ihor Andray Bloodstock for €13,000 as a foal and resold by Tally-Ho Stud to SackvilleDonald for £28,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. It was a big week for Cotai Glory, as just days after Royal Ascot he registered a first stakes winner when son Atomic Force sauntered to a five-length victory in the Prix du Bois at Chantilly. He is another bargain, having been bought by Tim Bourke from his breeder David Barry for €12,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale and resold by Railstown Stud to Stephen Hillen and Kevin Ryan for £22,000 at the Goffs Sportsman’s Yearling Sale. Galileo Gold, meanwhile, had three runners at Royal Ascot and made the most out of scant representation. His Woodcote Stakes-winning daughter Oscula was a fine third behind Sandrine in the Albany Stakes, while National Stakes-winning son Ebro River ran a cracker in fifth behind Berkshire Shadow in the Coventry Stakes, after travelling strongly on the unfavoured centre of the track. Oscula was a mere 4,000gns yearling purchase by Michael Aguiar from his breeder Padraig Williams, while Ebro River was bred by Tally-Ho Stud and sold by the operation to Charlie Gordon-Watson and Al Shaqab Racing for 75,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. It is notable how, time and time again, Tally-Ho Stud plays a role in the leading performers by its own Dig Two, who finished runner-up in the Windsor Castle Stakes, is by freshman sire Cotai Glory

We have become accustomed to daughters of damsire extraordinaire Pivotal producing winners on the biggest stage, and they were once again on the mark with three at this year’s royal meeting. More surprising, perhaps, is that the tally was matched by daughters of Rathbarry Stud stalwart Acclamation, who is six years younger than Pivotal and has been less heralded in this field to date. Chesham Stakes winner Point Lonsdale is by Australia out of Acclamation’s daughter Sweepstake, and just two races later his full-brother Broome ran second to Wonderful Tonight in the Hardwicke Stakes. Acclamation’s other two winning maternal grandchildren last week were Perotto (by New Bay out of Tschierschen) in the Britannia Handicap and Rohaan (by Mayson out of Vive Les Rouges) in the Wokingham. Most sires who start off as inexpensive sources of speed but become elite names who cover blue-chip mares, like Acclamation and Pivotal, take a little time to fire as a broodmare sire, as more and more of their better-bred daughters retire to paddocks. In that context it is interesting to note that both Sweepstake and Vive Les Rouges are members of Acclamation’s very first crop, the former a Listed winner and the latter a Listed runner-up in the sire’s champion freshman season in 2007. Acclamation is also damsire of the high-class trio Eqtidaar (Invincible Spirit), Massaat (Teofilo) and Mujbar (Muhaarar), out of Shadwell’s ace broodmare Madany, as well as Poule d’Essai des Poulains third San Donato (Lope De Vega), Grade 2-winning miler True Valour (Kodiac) and Listed-winning sprinters Raucous (Dream Ahead) and Royal Commando (No Nay Never). As all those sires’ names in brackets demonstrate, Acclamation mares have proved effective with a wide range of sire-lines. He can be relied upon to inject a good dose of speed and class into a mating. Similar comments have long applied to Pivotal mares, and that was in evidence at this year’s royal meeting through Prince of Wales’s Stakes heroine Love (Galileo), Queen’s Vase winner Kemari (Dubawi) and Albany Stakes scorer Sandrine (Bobby’s Kitten). Hello You (Invincible Spirit) made it a one-two for maternal granddaughters of Pivotal in the Albany.

Racing Post Thursday, June 24, 2021

Of course, no breeder will need reminding that Pivotal is a decent broodmare sire with the Cheveley Park Stud breed-shaper having been represented in this department by – deep breath! – Advertise, Cracksman, Defoe, Fairyland, Golden Horde, Harbour Law, Hermosa, Hydrangea, Mabs Cross, Magical, Main Sequence, Mayson, Olmedo, One Master, Precieuse, Rhododendron, Veracious, Winsili and many more. Nor will it be news that daughters of the following sires who were on the mark as damsire of two winners at Royal Ascot last week are a precious commodity: Danehill Dancer (Loving Dream and Subjectivist), Oasis Dream (Berkshire Shadow and Quickthorn) and Galileo (Foxes Tales and Stratum). But there were two more slightly surprising names who doubled up as winning broodmare sires at the meeting, in Choisir and Makfi. Oxted (Mayson), out of the highly rated four-time winner Charlotte Rosina, emulated his maternal grandsire Choisir by landing the King’s Stand Stakes, while Creative Force (Dubawi) was the second Royal Ascot winner produced by Choose Me, a Listed-winning daughter of Choisir, after 2016 Sandringham Handicap winner Persuasive (Dark Angel). Choose Me has actually had four offspring run with credit at the meeting, as Amazour (Azamour) was sixth in the Britannia Handicap in 2015 and Tisbutadream (Dream Ahead) ran ninth in the 2017 Sandringham. This is far from the first time that Choisir has covered himself in glory as a damsire at the royal meeting, as his daughters also produced Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner My Dream Boat (Lord Shanakill) and Coronation Stakes winner Winter (Galileo) – who is out of Wokingham winner Laddies Poker Too. No doubt about it, Choisir just seems to put a healthy dose of power and speed into a pedigree. Makfi, initially

considered a flop as a sire in Europe even in spite of his first crop yielding a Classic winner in Make Believe, has enjoyed something of a resurrection in popularity in recent seasons thanks to Make Believe siring the Prix du Jockey Club victor and globetrotting Group 1 winner Mishriff among his own debut runners. His daughters are also showing him in a better light, which should perhaps come as no surprise as he was well-bred himself and covered plenty of good mares in his early years at stud. The son of Dubawi was on the mark as damsire at Royal Ascot 12 months ago, thanks to Tactical (Toronado) in the Windsor Castle Stakes, and this year he doubled that tally thanks to another Windsor Castle winner in Chipotle (Havana Gold) and runaway Sandringham Handicap scorer Create Belief (Awtaad). If it’s a real under-the-radar broodmare sire you want, based on results from last week’s royal meeting, how about Frozen Power? The German 2,000 Guineas winner might not have been missed by many when he left Ireland for Italy after siring four crops at Ballyhane Stud, but two of his daughters conceived during that short spell in County Carlow came up with Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power (Ardad) and Windsor Castle Stakes runner-up Dig Two (Cotai Glory). Other Frozen Power mares have produced Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf sixth and Grade 3-placed three-year-old Croughavouke (Dandy Man) plus multiple winners Forbidden Secret and Island Storm, by the bargain basement sires Pearl Secret and Anjaal respectively. Frozen Power is another who at least brings some regal blood to a mating, as an Oasis Dream half-brother to Finsceal Beo, and while no one is suggesting his daughters are going to provide a shortcut to breeding success, the few that come up for auction these days should at least be inexpensive.

Croom House on to winner with blue hen Sweepstake Martin Stevens on the broodmares and breeders who were successful at this year’s royal meeting Broodmares CROOM HOUSE STUD’S talented producer Sweepstake claims leading broodmare honours at Royal Ascot, with her two-year-old son Point Lonsdale running out a convincing winner of the Chesham Stakes and that colt’s five-year-old brother Broome finishing second to Wonderful Tonight in the Hardwicke Stakes just over an hour later. It’s been a case of ‘opposites attract’ for Sweepstake as she is a speedily bred daughter of Acclamation who showed plenty of dash to win the Listed National Stakes early in her two-year-old season, but the sire of her two best offspring, Point Lonsdale and Broome, is the later-maturing, regally bred dual Derby winner Australia. Sweepstake has a Lope De Vega yearling filly heading to the sales this autumn and a Frankel colt foal at foot. She is not in foal this season. SF Bloodstock’s consistent broodmare Black Dahlia did not quite manage a winner last week but she has achieved the remarkable feat of producing three top-two finishers with three different horses at the last two royal meetings. Lope Y Fernandez, her four-year-old colt by Lope De Vega, finished second to Palace Pier in the Queen Anne Stakes on the opening day and his three-year-old brother Liffey River found only Perotto too good in the

Britannia Stakes on Thursday after suffering a troubled passage. The place double came after the mare’s third foal Dark Vision, by Dream Ahead, won the Royal Hunt Cup in good fashion in 2020. Black Dahlia, a daughter of Dansili who ran 42 times to win five races and finish second in Listed company, was bought by SF Bloodstock to support its stallion investments in Europe. She has a yearling filly by Lope De Vega and a filly foal by Wootton Bassett, and she is in foal to Hello Youmzain. Perotto, meanwhile, continued his family’s remarkable run of success at Royal Ascot, driven largely by Fulke and Gaie Johnson Houghton. His third dam Shall We Run was a half-sister to Queen Mary Stakes winner Dead Certain and to Pounelta, who in turn produced Jersey Stakes scorer Lots Of Magic. Shall We Run produced Runway Dancer, the dam of Diamond Jubilee Stakes third Astaire, and Roo, the Listed-placed great-granddam of Queen Anne Stakes hero Accidental Agent. Mohaather, a grandson of Roo, could have finished better than seventh in last year’s Queen Anne but found no luck in running. Perotto is the first foal out of Tschierschen, a Bath maiden winner. The dam has a two-year-old gelding by Mohaather’s sire Showcasing in training with Marcus Tregoning, and a Zoustar yearling filly. She was due to foal to Camelot this year.

Poetic Flare strikes for trainer Jim Bolger, also the star colt’s owner and breeder, in the St James’s Palace Stakes

breeding story of the season. The St James’s Palace Stakes hero is by Dawn Approach, a stallion he bred, owned and trained to champion two-year-old honours and Classic success, while Dawn Approach’s sire New Approach and New Approach’s dam Park Express were also sent out by the virtuoso horseman to win Group 1 races. Bolger also bred and trained Poetic Flare’s dam Maria Lee, maternal granddam Elida and her mother Saviour. Elida is a half-sister to Speirbhean, the Listed-winning dam of the trainer’s unbeaten champion two-year-old Teofilo. Kirsten Rausing has had a similarly long-standing attachment to the pedigree of her Albany Stakes winner Sandrine, a daughter of second-season sire Bobby’s Kitten who stands at the owner-breeder’s Lanwades Stud. Sandrine’s dam is Seychelloise, a multiple winner by Pivotal out of Prix d’Arenberg scorer Starlit Sands. Sushila, a daughter of Petingo who is the maternal granddam of Starlit Sands, was bought by Rausing at the Goffs Irish National Yearling Sale of 1976 and played an important part in the establishment of Lanwades Stud, as she produced King George victor Petoski from the first crop of the operation’s foundation stallion Niniski. Mascalls Stud produced one of the most admirable winners of the week, Gold Cup star Subjectivist. The son of Teofilo is out of the breeder’s fantastic broodmare Reckoning, a Listed-placed daughter of Danehill Dancer who has also produced this season’s Jockey Club Stakes and Further Flight Stakes winner Sir Ron Priestley (far from disgraced in seventh in the Hardwicke on Saturday) and last year’s Rockfel Stakes third Alba Rose. Plaudits at this year’s royal meeting also go to Cheveley Park Stud, which bred a brace of winners in Berkshire Shadow and Significantly, and Tally-Ho Stud, which matched that feat with Campanelle and Perfect Power. Kudos also to the China Horse Club, breeders of Perotto and Wolferton Stakes runner-up Patrick Sarsfield; Owenstown Stud, on the mark with Creative Force and Diamond Jubilee third Art Power; and Whitsbury Manor Stud, responsible for Commonwealth Cup demoted-to-second Dragon Symbol and Norfolk Stakes third Project Dante. The Royal Studs also had a good run of it, thanks to the Queen’s homebreds Reach For The Moon, runner-up in the Chesham Stakes, and King’s Lynn, a close third in the Wokingham on Saturday.

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL ROYAL ASCOT REVIEW

No halting this bandwagon as star sons shine A

S SOON as there was any inkling of the potential of Invincible Spirit as a sire of sires, stallion masters wasted no time in jumping on the bandwagon. The notion that the Irish National Stud veteran could have an important role to play through his sons proved spot-on. Many have been highly successful, among them Kingman and top Australian sire I Am Invincible. Even those who have fallen to the colder side of fashion remain in the news, one example

INVINCIBLE SPIRIT CLAN Nancy Sexton on the legacy of the veteran Irish National Stud stallion as his sons and now daughters are coming to the fore being Lawman, who sired Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous out of his tenth crop. That trend was further underlined at Royal Ascot last week, a meeting at which Invincible Spirit was showcased in a rather good light.

From the meeting’s opener, in which Kingman’s Palace Pier captured the Queen Anne Stakes, to the final day, when the former 55-rated Mayson gelding Rohaan continued his remarkable progression for David Evans with victory in the Wokingham Handicap,

Invincible Spirit was never far from the action. Three of his sons – Kingman, Mayson and Profitable – sired Group winners, while Cable Bay, National Defense and Shalaa were represented by top-three finishers. The highlight was undoubtedly the opening-day Group 1 double secured by Palace Pier and Oxted, a son of Cheveley Park Stud’s Mayson, in the Queen Anne and King’s Stand Stakes. Then on Friday, Dragon Symbol added further to the collection by finishing first past the post in the Commonwealth Cup. The colt is one of 16 stakes performers from the first three crops of Highclere Stud’s Cable Bay. Of particular significance going forward, however, was the outcome to the Queen Mary Stakes, won by the Profitable filly Quick Suzy over the American raider Twilight Gleaming to ensure a one-two finish for Invincible Spirit granddaughters. An excellent sprinter for Clive Cox who struck at Royal Ascot himself in the King’s Stand Stakes, Profitable has been popular throughout his stud career at Kildangan Stud and a strong proposition commercially – a powerful horse, his first yearlings looked the part at last year’s sales, as an average of over 40,000gns attests. That, in turn, will always lead to an element of hype, but with a Queen Mary Stakes winner now on his record alongside several promising other types, notably the dual scorer Thunder Love and debut winners Ammolite and Zebelle, that pressure has been alleviated to some extent. Similarly, Twilight Gleaming’s performance marked an important moment for her sire, National Defense, particularly so given that the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner has only 29 first-crop two-year-olds on the ground. At £75,000, Twilight

Palace Pier (right), by Kingman, saunters to victory in the Queen Anne Stakes; (above) the multiple Group 1 winner’s grandsire Invincible Spirit, at the Irish National Stud with groom Michael ‘Daffer’ Kelly

Gleaming was also the most expensive of his 20 yearlings to pass through the ring by the sire last year. However, arguably taking centre stage as the sire of two winners and damsire of another was Mayson. At a fee of £4,000, July Cup winner Mayson is very much a friend of the smaller breeder. He was a reliable and tough sprinter during the course of an 18-race career for Richard Fahey and it is those attributes, namely speed, soundness and durability, that often underpin his stock. Oxted, bred by Homecroft Wealth Racing out of the useful sprinter Charlotte Rosina, is his leading performer in six crops of racing age, but don’t bet against Rohaan making a successful leap into Group 1 company sooner rather than later. The pair are two of nine stakes winners sired by Mayson in five crops that average out at 83 foals. Several have been effective at two, notably Global Applause (won National Stakes), Dance Diva (won Empress Stakes) and Maystar (won Prix Moonlight Cloud at three), to complement an older Group winner such as Oxted (left). There is the perception that

Mayson is a soft-ground sire, triggered no doubt by his easy win on bottomless ground in the 2012 July Cup. However, more than 50 per cent of his runners have won when faced with good or good to firm ground in Britain and Ireland, and, in a show of versatility, it was riding good to firm for Oxted’s King’s Stand Stakes victory and soft for Rohaan’s Wokingham success. “Richard Fahey has always said that his stock go on different types of ground,” says Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park Stud. “Like himself, they’re genuine and tough individuals. They’re versatile and, in that, I think there’s a bit of his damsire Pivotal coming through.” Mayson’s popularity has waned in recent years – he has 34 two-year-olds on the ground and covered 61 mares last year – but in the fast-moving world of bloodstock fashion, he isn’t alone in that trend, especially as a lower-priced middle-aged stallion. However, he covered more than 70 mares this year and, given his current vein of form, is no doubt back on the radar of several breeders. “He’s a little superstar really,” says Richardson. “These types of stallions keep the smaller breeder in business. He gets a winner most days but has also proven that he can get a top-class horse. The number of stallions standing in England is not what it was ten years ago and it’s important to have a horse like this who British breeders can use.”

QUICK SUZ

CAMPANELLE

ROHAAN

A month to remember... In June Frankel sired Epsom Derby winner Adayar, Australian 2YO Gr.1 winner Converge and was leading sire at Royal Ascot for the second time. #withoutequal

The success of Mayson, described by Richardson as “very enthusiastic about life and a gentleman to be around”, capped an excellent week for Cheveley Park Stud, which was also on the scoresheet as the owners of Indie Angel, successful in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, and breeders of Berkshire Shadow and Significantly, successful in the Coventry Stakes and Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes. Significantly is a son of Garswood, who holds an entry in the Tattersalls July Sale following a stint in France, out

of the Mayson mare Rosebride. Mayson’s eldest daughters are still only seven yet his record as a damsire also includes the useful two-year-olds Devious Angel and Aint Misbehaving, both of whom are by Cotai Glory. It’s an encouraging start (in a department that Invincible Spirit has yet to truly excel in) and one that promises to add another dimension to this likeable stallion. There are currently nine stakes-producing sons of Invincible Spirit at stud in Europe. In addition to the well-established names,

several of the younger horses are also showing promise, including Territories, operating at a winners-to-runners strike-rate just shy of 40 per cent, and Shalaa, the sire of Irish 1,000 Guineas third No Speak Alexander. All of which should be music to the ears of those studs in charge of the latest sons coming through. It’s a powerful group given it includes Magna Grecia, Eqtidaar, Invincible Army and Inns Of Court, all of whom have been well supported by breeders.

BLUE HEN RAFHA’S REMARKABLE LEGACY . . . THE royal meeting also provided further affirmation of the increasingly important role that Rafha has to play within the breed. Through her place as the dam of both Invincible Spirit and Kodiac, Prince Faisal’s Prix de Diane winner Rafha sits in the background of six of the week’s winners and 18 of the top-three finishers. As outlined, it was something of a landmark meeting for the Invincible Spirit tribe. However, within a relatively short space of time, Kodiac’s importance has extended beyond his own reputation as a high-profile source of speed and into the powerful territory of successful sire of sires. That newfound status was well on show last week as two of Kodiac’s sons, Ardad and Kodi Bear, sired the Norfolk Stakes one-two,

Perfect Power and Go Bears Go. For Overbury Stud’s Ardad, the success of Perfect Power accentuated the fast start he has made with his first crop. As a Windsor Castle Stakes winner and expensive breezer, Ardad was expected to throw sharp types. And sharp they are, yet trainers also speak of a genuine and determined attitude, an aspect that tends to be typical of the Kodiac line. Ardad, who like Perfect Power was bred by Tally-Ho Stud, is the fourth son of Kodiac to sire a stakes winner – only five of them have runners – and the second to sire the winner of the Norfolk after Ballyhane Stud’s Prince Of Lir, successful last year courtesy of The Lir Jet. Ardad’s haul also included Coventry Stakes third Vintage Clarets, while Kodi Bear was

also represented by the Commonwealth Cup third Measure Of Magic alongside Go Bears Go. Rathbarry Stud’s Kodi Bear is a stallion who has impressed this season, with the Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel and the fast French two-year-old Diablotine also helping push him to within the top four European second-crop sires. As for Kodiac, he made his presence felt thanks to the Commonwealth Cup winner Campanelle. Another bred by Tally-Ho Stud, her duel with the first-past-the-post Dragon Symbol encapsulated Rafha’s growing influence, that colt being a son of Cable Bay and therefore a grandson of Invincible Spirit. For a filly who was described by her trainer Sir Henry Cecil as being “knee high to a bumble bee”, that’s quite a legacy.

Steve Moran, from our sister publication ANZ Bloodstock News, with an Antipodean take on the events of last week

Rebellions and late-night fare

HE irony of watching Rebellion, the series about the 1916 Irish Easter Rising, was not lost on me as I tried to fill in time before watching the final day of Royal Ascot from the other side of the world. It’s a challenge to see through the five-day (night) meeting on television with the opening race at 11.30pm.

The Queen duly arrived and her attendance prompted, again ironically, a rebellion of sorts with climate-change activists, tagged Extinction Rebellion, causing a brief furore. Back in 1916, the British military was much slower to respond, with the races to ‘blame’. It’s been claimed, often, that the British were slow to react because most of their army officers were at

The news of the rising eventually reached Fairyhouse, where 25,000 people had reportedly gathered. The soldiers commandeered all available transport, leaving patrons stranded and – apparently – the National winner All Sorts to walk home to County Westmeath, about 100 kilometres away. Perhaps I digress too much into the past but it is the history and tradition which is really key to the mystique of Royal Ascot, and historical curiosities never fail to amuse. The final day opened, would you believe, with the Irish denying Her Majesty the Chesham Stakes as Point Lonsdale, for Ryan Moore

Racing Post Thursday, June 24, 2021

Subjectivist (far left) lands the meeting’s signature race, the Gold Cup, last Thursday

and Aidan O’Brien, overhauled Reach For The Moon. Half an hour later, it ticked over to June 20 in this hemisphere, which was the date – in 1977 – when Sheikh Mohammed won his first race in Britain with the subsequent Molecomb Stakes winner Hatta. The sheikh’s Godolphin operation, on cue, landed the quinella in the Jersey Stakes with Creative Force and Naval Crown. It was that same year, 1977, that Sir Michael Stoute (right) scored his first Royal Ascot win in the Jersey. He claimed his 82nd on Saturday when Dream Of Dreams won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. For all that, the highlight of the final night was the third straight

win of the David Evans-trained Rohaan, who took the Wokingham Handicap despite carrying equal top-weight as a three-year-old and becoming the first of that age to win since 1987. A gelding, like earlier winner Creative Force, he contested this race as he was ineligible to run in Friday’s Commonwealth Cup – worth three times as much – as he is a gelding. Rohaan had previously beaten the Commonwealth Cup ‘winner’ Dragon Symbol, who was first past the post but demoted behind Campanelle after interference. Having a Group 1 taken from him in the stewards’ room – a massive penalty for all concerned given his

stallion potential – was one of the week’s big talking points. Earlier in the week, the controversy centred on Stunning Beauty when she was declared a runner after jumping from the gates, effectively blindfolded with her hood not removed. This would not have been the case in countries such as Hong Kong and Australia which are now part of the Royal Ascot World Pool. The protocols governing this situation will now surely change in line with other jurisdictions, as partnership in the World Pool has already driven at least one change – the addition of an extra race on each day’s programme.

‘History and tradition is key to the mystique of Royal Ascot’

Assessing the future prospects of the week’s better performers will obviously be complicated by the soggy ground on Thursday and Friday, and the tacky surface on Saturday. The two-year-old races hold most interest for me. Berkshire Shadow was very good in winning the Coventry but Eldrickjones, Masseto, who wants further, Ebro River and Dhabab, who was unlucky, also ran with merit and should prove well above average. Chipotle won the Windsor Castle on day two in a faster time than Quick Suzy in the Queen Mary. Chipotle is unbeaten in three starts on good ground and

his acceleration from the back was impressive on the, to that point, non-preferred far side. Dig Two was sound in beating the nearside division. Perfect Power claimed the Norfolk in a race where the first five home had won their previous starts. The runner-up Go Bears Go and fourth-placed Cadamosto took the eye as they spaced the farside runners. Point Lonsdale rallied late to score narrowly in what proved to be a good Chesham. The form is solid around the three horses who were well beaten into third, fourth and fifth. Subscribe to ANZ’s daily newsletter for free at anzbloodstocknews.com
