SUMMER YEARLINGS

FEATURING Arqana August, Go s UK Premier, BBAG and Tattersalls Somerville sales

SUMMER YEARLINGS FIRST-SEASON SIRES

LOADING the sales dates on to next month’s RP Bloodstock rota rammed home just what a busy period for the industry looms. Roll on a rest at Christmas.

Another year, another change of format for the Arqana August Select Sale, which last year was Saturday-Monday. This time we start tomorrow afternoon, and the threeday run concludes on Sunday evening, following the Prix Morny and Jean Romanet raceday across the road at the picturesque Deauville racecourse. Then follows a dark day, before the V2 sale on Tuesday.

Normandy, by the by, is thought likely to become a more popular holiday destination in future, given soaring temperatures further south in Spain, Italy and Greece. The mind boggles as to what that will mean for hotel prices and the like in Deauville.

But in the here and now we’re hopefully on the verge of another spectacular sale, with the catalogue listing 18 siblings to Group 1 winners, for example Haras de Saint Pair’s Kingman half-sister to Matron Stakes winner Pearls Galore.

A week after Arqana the roadshow heads north for the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, where among many potential ‘Donny rockets’, to use managing director Tim Kent’s phrase, is the No Nay Never colt out of an Invincible Spirit halfsister to Lillie Langtry, dam of Minding, Tuesday and Empress Josephine, offered by Glenvale Stud.

Next stop – and one ever more on the radar – is the BBAG auction in BadenBaden, while also featuring in the pages that follow is the Tattersalls Somerville Sale. Martin Stevens, Kitty Trice and Scott Burton are your guides.

Good luck to everyone with a stake in the yearling sales about to explode into life as summer becomes autumn, and rest assured the Racing Post will have every base covered online and in the newspaper.

From Arizona to Yafta:

Martin Stevens runs the rule over the stallions with their first yearlings up for sale

PINATUBO was the most expensive new recruit to the stallion ranks in 2021, retiring to Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket at £35,000 on the back of being unbeaten in six starts at two, including a dazzling nine-length demolition job in the National Stakes, and becoming the best juvenile on Racing Post Ratings since Celtic Swing. He also earned Group 1 laurels at three in the Prix Jean Prat, for all that he wasn’t nearly so dominant that season, and is by Shamardal from the stallion-making family of Invincible Spirit and Kodiac, so it is no surprise that his services didn’t come cheaply.

Pinatubo’s largest yearling drafts will be in the blue-chip sales in Britain and Ireland in the autumn, but the early bird might catch the worm with some well-bred lots available in the coming weeks.

The nine listed at the Arqana August Yearling Sale include WH Bloodstock’s half-brother to Group 3-winning sprinter Dubai Station (lot 24) and Haras de Montaigu’s closely related half-brother to recent Chantilly maiden scorer Mondrial (283).

Two Pinatubo yearlings at Goffs UK Premier are siblings to stakes winners – Longview

Stud’s half-brother to Al Raya (405) and Stratford Place Stud’s half-brother to Thammin (421) – while both lots by the sire at BBAG are siblings to German 1,000 Guineas scorers, namely Gestüt Fährhof’s half-sister to Habana (165) and Gestüt Brümmerhof’s half-brother to Novemba (63).

Pinatubo was one of an unprecedented three unbeaten juvenile Group 1 winners by Shamardal in 2019, along with Earthlight and Victor Ludorum. Earthlight, who took the Prix Morny and Middle

Park Stakes and was a neck second in the Prix de la Foret at three, was new to Kildangan Stud at a fee of €20,000 in 2021. The four by the sire available at Arqana include a halfbrother to Prix Jean Prat hero Intellogent (313) from Ecurie des Monceaux; the eight on offer in Doncaster include a colt out of Group 3 winner Split Trois (209) from Siskin Lodge; and the trio at Tattersalls Somerville include a filly out of Park Express Stakes third Achnaha (31) from Plantation Stud. Shamardal’s treble of

FIRST-CROP SIRES AT THE 2023 EARLY YEARLING SALES

Group 1-winning two-yearolds coincided with older son Blue Point – leading this year’s freshman table – winning both the King’s Stand Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, which predictably helped spark a run on his sons retiring to stud in 2021.

Shaman, a beautifully bred Group 2 winner and dual Group 1 runner-up over a mile who stands at Yeomanstown Stud, is represented by seven lots at Goffs UK Premier, including a colt out of the Group 3-winning Kodiac mare Bear Cheek (317) and filly out

of a Dark Angel sister to stakes performers Maggies Angel, San Andreas and Sistine Madonna (407), both offered by the O’Callaghan family’s operation themselves.

Waldpfad, an intriguingly rare high-class Germantrained sprinter by Shamardal from the brilliant family of Masked Marvel and Waldgeist, stands in his native country and has eight catalogued in Baden-Baden. His ownerbreeder Gestüt Brümmerhof showcases him with a halfsister to eight winners including Listed scorer North Mum, out of Preis der Diana second North Queen (177). This year’s cohort of European-based first-crop yearling sires includes a world champion in Ghaiyyath, a son of Dubawi and Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Nightime who bolted up in the Coronation Cup, Eclipse and Juddmonte International in 2020. He covered his first book of mares at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €30,000.

The talk of last year’s foal sales, he is another who will have more delegates at the autumn yearling auction fixtures. But he does have a few on offer in the coming weeks, including a half-sister to Prix La Force winner Chilean (176) consigned by La Motteraye to Arqana August and Gestüt Etzean’s half-sister to German champion two-year-old Sea Bay (74) and Gestüt Karlshof’s half-brother to Group 1-placed No Limit Credit (176) in Baden-Baden.

newest names on the roster

grabs this summer are Kameko, Persian King, Romanised and Sottsass.

Tweenhills-based 2,000 Guineas victor Kameko, by Kitten’s Joy, has nicely bred lots in most of the major summer sales, including a half-brother to classy Buckaroo (42) and filly out of Group 1-placed Know It All (258), both being sent by Monceaux to Arqana August; a half-sister to speedy filly Nymphadora (321) from Manister House Stud at Goffs UK; and a filly out of the smart Dubawi mare Dubara (112) being presented by the National Stud at Tattersalls Somerville.

Arqana August and V2 feature no shortage of choice of lots by Persian King, Haras d’Etreham’s son of Kingman whose three Group 1 wins at around a mile included the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Etreham’s half-brother to stakes scorers Sivoliere and Suphala, out of the Listedwinning Kingmambo mare Sefroua (56), and Haras des Capucines’ half-brother to Australian Group 2 winner King Of Leogrance (135) look the pick on paper.

Romanised, a son of Holy Roman Emperor who landed the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Prix Jacques le Marois, also stands in France, at Haras de Bouquetot, so across the Channel is the place to go for his yearlings too. The Channel Consignment’s half-sister to German Group 2 winner Boscaccio (158) at Arqana August takes the eye.

Sottsass stands at Coolmore in County Tipperary but because he is by Normandy sire sensation Siyouni and was trained in France, where he won the Prix du Jockey Club and Arc, he has a strong turnout at Arqana. The Fairway Consignment’s half-sister to Phoenix Stakes winner Sudirman and the talented pair Roman Empire and Star Of India (66) should make a good racehorse and has oodles of residual value.

Maiden yearling sires Circus Maximus, King Of Change, Mohaather, River Boyne and Without Parole all excelled over a mile.

Coolmore’s St James’s Palace Stakes, Prix du Moulin and Queen Anne Stakes victor Circus Maximus, immaculately well bred being by Galileo out of Duntle, has only one lot in the early sales –but that happens to be a halfbrother to Listed scorer Kimngrace (128) being sold by Jamie Railton at Tattersalls Somerville.

King Of Change, a precious son of Farhh who defeated a high-class field to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and stands at Starfield Stud, has five lots heading to Goffs UK

Premier. WH Bloodstock consign a particularly wellbred example, a half-brother to the precocious and pacey Mums Tipple (352).

Sussex Stakes hero Mohaather, a noted goodlooker by Showcasing who stands at Nunnery Stud, has just one lot at Arqana, but she is a half-sister to Group 2 winner San Huberto (53) from Etreham.

Among his ten in Doncaster are three siblings to stakes scorers – Barton Stud’s halfsister to Sir Boris (125), Boherguy Stud’s three-parts brother to Showout (173) and Bearstone Stud’s half-sister to Ventura Rebel (409) – while his four at Somerville include Hegarty Bloodstock’s halfsister to the smart Savaanah (6).

River Boyne, a son of Dandy Man who joined Tara Stud after taking the Frank E Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita, has sparse representation at the summer yearling sales, but one to watch out for is Tara’s own half-brother to Listed-placed Live On Stage out of a Manduro half-sister to Covert Love at Goffs UK (121).

Frankel’s St James’s Palace Stakes-winning son Without Parole, who stands at Newsells Park Stud, has a handful of lots in the early yearling sales.

Ringfort Stud’s colt out of a blueblooded daughter of ace broodmare sire Oasis Dream (243), one of four by the sire at Tattersalls Somerville, makes considerable appeal.

Of course, many of the summer yearling sales are all about sharp, speedy stock, and there are numerous new yearlings sires who should be able to supply those – the likes of Arizona, Far Above, Golden Horde, Hello Youmzain, Rumble Inthejungle, Sands Of Mali, Sergei Prokofiev, Threat, Van Beethoven and Wooded.

The pedigree pick of the early lots by Arizona, a Coventry Stakes winner by No Nay Never based at Castlehyde

Stud, is perhaps the half-sister to accomplished Scandinavian performer Stroxx Carlras (303) being presented by Rockview Stables at the Somerville sale.

The six by Starfield Studstationed Palace House Stakes winner Far Above at Goffs UK include a Tally-Ho Studoffered half-brother to Group 3 winner Ayaar and classy handicapper Dual Identity (231), and the three by the son of Farhh at Tattersalls next month include a Houghton Bloodstock-consigned filly out of the Listed-placed Mayson mare Clubbable (85).

Arqana V2 is the place to be for the widest choice of lots by Golden Horde, a Commonwealth Cup-winning son of Lethal Force who is based at Montfort et Preaux. Haras de Colleville’s colt out of Kendiss, a winning Kendargent full-sister to stakes winners Kendly and Surrey Mist (462), has one of the better pages.

Hello Youmzain, the wellbred son of Kodiac who won the Haydock Sprint Cup and Diamond Jubilee Stakes before retiring to Haras d’Etreham, has more than 30 lots due to sell in Deauville in the next few weeks.

Of particular interest on pedigree are Haras de Montaigu’s half-brother to Soffia (40), Haras de la Louviere’s half-brother to Witch Hunter (79), Ecurie des Monceaux’s half-brother to National Defense (138) and Haras de la Perelle’s halfbrother to Giofra (232).

Rumble Inthejungle, a Molecomb Stakes winner and Middle Park Stakes third by Bungle Inthejungle, hasn’t been strongly supported at Norman Court Stud but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t get fast and forward runners. Norman Court (107) and Llety Farms (267) send up colts by him with deep pages to Tattersalls Somerville.

Sands Of Mali, by Panis, won the Gimcrack Stakes at two and British Champions

Sprint at three before joining the roster at Ballyhane Stud. His eight lots in Doncaster include a filly out of smart sprinter Red Balloons from Ballyhane (134), a half-brother to Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner Laraaib from Knockatrina House Stud (163) and a filly out of Australian Group 2 scorer French Bid

from Raheendaw Farm (416).

Sergei Prokofiev, a strongly supported Group 3 winner by Scat Daddy who stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud, looks a likely candidate for leading freshman honours in 2024.

Harry Dutfield’s half-sister to this season’s dual juvenile winner Harvanna (256) and Manister House Stud’s half-

brother to high-class two-yearold Sam Maximus (364) stand out among the 15 in Doncaster, while Hegarty Bloodstock’s half-brother to three winners out of Group 2-placed Tongue Twista (14) and Norris Bloodstock’s colt out of Italian Group 3 scorer Buonasera (69) feature among the 17 listed at Tattersalls.

Wooded, Haras de Bouquetot’s Prix de l’Abbayewinning son of Wootton Bassett, has received a handy pedigree update on the eve of his first yearlings selling, with his brother Bucanero Fuerte taking the Phoenix Stakes. His largest draft is at Arqana V2, where his nine lots include a filly out of a winning Lawman mare from one of her consignor Haras de la Louviere’s finest families (345).

Finally, Haras de l’Hotellerie offers something of a novelty by a first-crop sire at Arqana August, in multiple US Grade 1 winner Maximum Security’s filly out of Idle Hour, a stakesplaced daughter of Malibu Moon and La Brea Stakes winner Downthedustyroad (246).

SUMMER YEARLINGS ARQANA

Ace Impact

3yo b c Cracksman - Absolutly Me (Anabaa Blue)

The outstanding son of Cracksman is one of the flagbearers for Arqana’s August Sale this year, having made what now looks the absolute bargain sum of €75,000 when selling to Jean-Claude Rouget from Etang in 2021.

From the first crop of Darley’s European and world champion, Ace Impact was unraced at two but has proved well worth waiting for, with five wins from as many starts in 2023.

His first black-type success came in the Listed Prix de Suresnes, a race Rouget has targeted with subsequent top performers such as Arc and Prix du Jockey Club hero Sottsass.

The Waltraut Spanner-bred Ace Impact took the step up to Classic level in his stride when showing a potent turn of foot in the Prix du Jockey Club to beat Big Rock, with Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Marhaba Ya Sanafi six lengths back in third and subsequent Grand Prix de Paris winner Feed The Flame in fourth. He followed up in Tuesday’s Prix Guillaume d’Ornano.

Ace Impact, one of five black-type winners from his sire’s debut crop, is the fifth foal out of the Anabaa Blue mare Absolutly Me, a debut winner at two and German Listed-placed at three and four.

The 14-year-old has produced three other winners, including the stakes-placed pair Alessandro (by Australia) and Apollo Flight (Rock Of Gibraltar).

Bucanero Fuerte

2yo b c Wootton Bassett - Frida La Blonde (Elusive City)

Frida La Blonde has been a wonderful producer for connections and her affinity with Wootton Bassett has yielded two Group 1 winners and a Group-placed performer.

Her first son by Coolmore’s brilliant sire was Beat La Bon, a four-time winner for Richard Hannon and second in the Sovereign Stakes.

Frida La Blonde’s next foal was Wooded, the winner of the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye for Al Shaqab Racing and Henri Graffard. Also a winner of the Group 3 Prix Texanita, Wooded has a big period ahead of him with his debut yearlings selling from his first book at Haras de Bouquetot.

The pair’s younger brother Bucanero Fuerto looks perhaps even more exciting, winning the Group 2 Railway Stakes on his third start after a maiden score at the Curragh in March and a second to another Wootton Bassett colt, River Tiber, in the Coventry at Royal Ascot.

Last weekend he struck at the top level in the Phoenix Stakes, pushing his family’s reputation to the forefront of everyone’s mind in Deauville – good news for Etreham, which consigns his Dubawi half-sister (lot 214) to the Arqana sale on Saturday.

Feed The Flame

3yo b c Kingman - Knyazhna

(Montjeu)

Feed The Flame joins Ace Impact in leading the French troops towards a tilt at Arc glory in October, and the Kingman colt showcased his credentials with an impressive triumph in the Prix du Jockey Club.

The colt, bred in partnership by Ecurie des Monceaux, Lordship Stud and Clear Light, cost €270,000 from Arqana’s flagship sale in 2021, when hammered down to Gerard Larrieu.

There is no knowing what his limits are over a mile and a half, and trainer Pascal Bary is adamant the trip and potential terrain of the Arc will suit him well.

An eighth individual Group 1 winner for his Banstead Manor Stud-based sire, Feed The Flame more than likely gets his stamina from his distaff side.

Dam Knyazhna is a Montjeu half-sister to Prix du Conseil de Paris second and Prix Niel third Migwar (by Sea The Stars) and out of an unraced Kingmambo sister to St Leger and Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Rule Of Law.

Ramatuelle

2yo ch f Justify - Raven’s Lady (Raven’s Pass) Justify’s ascent towards the sire summit has been helped in no small part by two of Europe’s leading juveniles in scintillating Superlative winner City Of Troy and this filly, who looks another outstanding performer for Christopher Head.

The two-year-old was a four-and-a-half-length winner on her debut at Chantilly in April and went down by only a head at Saint-Cloud next time.

She has proven faultless in two starts since, blowing away subsequent stakes winner Zorken in the Group 3 Prix du Bois, before a four-length romp in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin, a contest won last year by subsequent Prix Morny and Middle Park winner Blackbeard. French champion juvenile Unfortunately also won the Papin en route to victory in the Morny at Deauville.

The Prix Morny this Sunday is where Ramatuelle is heading, and it will take a real good one to beat her.

Bred by the increasingly well-known Yeguada Centurion out of the Groupwinning Raven’s Pass mare Raven’s Lady, Ramatuelle sold to Arthur Hoyeau for €100,000 last summer.

Sauterne

3yo b f Kingman - Salicorne (Aragorn)

A tough daughter of Kingman who has not been far away from adding a Group 1 to her name after a Listed success at Longchamp in April, Sauterne did not sell at the August Sale, failing to meet her reserve at €130,000 when offered by Haras de Montaigu.

Besides her obvious talent, the Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois-bred three-year-old hails from a family that has flourished in recent years.

She is out of the unraced Salicorne, a daughter of Aragorn and the stakeswinning Dashing Blade mare Soignee. That makes Salicorne a half-sister to the top-class Stacelita, whose CV featured wins in the Prix de Diane, Prix Vermeille and Prix Saint-Alary.

The Monsun-sired Stacelita is also, notably, the dam of Frankel’s first Group 1 and Classic winner, Japanese Oaks

Zagrey 4yo b c Zarak - Grey Anatomy (Slickly)

The high-class son of Zarak has provided Group 1 updates on his last two starts, finishing a fine third to the world’s best horse, Equinox, in the Sheema Classic at Meydan, and then second to Westover in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

A dual Listed winner as a three-year-old for trainer Yann Barberot and owners Ecurie Altima and Gerard AugustinNormand, the colt did not sell for €32,000 when presented at the August Sale in 2020 by Haras de Grandcamp.

One of 14 black-type winners for his exciting sire, Zagrey has progressed with age and racing in a similar fashion to Zarak – a winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud at four – and his last two efforts have seen him produce careerbest Racing Post Ratings. It is not hard to see him picking up a deserved Group win.

The colt is well-bred too, being a half-brother to Group 1 Criterium International third Graignes (by Zoffany) and the Listed-placed Dariyan filly Anatiya, and out of a dam from the family of the Juddmontebred Breeders’ Cup Juvenile second and Dewhurst third Eltish.

SUMMER YEARLINGS

Kitty Trice with her pick of 12 yearlings from the catalogue who could grab the limelight in Deauville

Lot 11

Bay filly Kingman - Pearl Banks (Pivotal)

Consigned by Haras de Saint Par

A half-sister to last season’s Matron Stakes winner Pearls Galore and a granddaughter of Haras de Saint Par’s foundation mare Pearly Shells, this filly strikes as an obvious early highlight.

The daughter of Kingman has immense residual value, particularly when the cross with Pivotal has produced the likes of last year’s Gimcrack Stakes winner Noble Style, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes runner-up Roseman and stakes winner Poetry from just a handful of runners.

A March-born individual, the filly is out of German Group winner Pearl Banks, the dam of three black-type winners from five runners to date. Among their number is Oasis Dream mare Pearly Steph, a stakes winner at three for Freddy Head and dam of last term’s dual Group 3 winner Eternal Pearl. That Frankel filly is set to return for Charlie Appleby this year and could well do more to enhance an already impressive page.

Pearl Banks is a half-sister to three stakes performers, including the 2021 Prix Greffulhe second Smile Makers.

Lot 77

B c Sea The Moon - Soho Rose (Hernando)

La Motteraye Consignment

La Motteraye Consignment’s colt by Lanwades Stud resident and Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon comes from a family with plenty of upside.

For starters, his three-parts sister, Sea La Rose, struck in last year’s Prix de Royallieu, while another sibling, Deauville Legend, made an encouraging return to action when fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes, his first run since finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup, before finding

Fillies by Frankel and Kingman among those who catch the eye

a red-hot King George too big an ask, though he didn’t help himself by pulling hard.

The last-named pair are by Sea The Stars, while the trio are all related to another Group performer in Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial second Dean Street Doll, by Oasis Dream.

Soho Rose, a sister to Group 2 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Hanami, was no slouch herself, winning three times for Alex Pantall, including a German Listed race.

There is plenty more class to delve into in the page, with Prix de Royallieu scorer and Prix Vermeille third The Juliet Rose another to feature under

second dam Russian Rose.

Lot 91

B f Frankel - Tacitly (Dubawi)

Ecurie des Monceaux

The Frankel - Dubawi nick has worked to potent effect through the likes of Adayar, Mostahdaf, Homeless Songs and Dream Castle, and this filly out of a winning daughter of Falmouth Stakes scorer Timepiece rates an exciting day-one offering.

Tacitly was a winner for Roger Charlton as a three-yearold in 2020 before selling to Horse France for 375,000gns at the following year’s Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

She is out of the high-class

Zamindar mare Timepiece, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Passage Of Time, the dam of Group winners Time Test and Tempus, as well as King Edward VII Stakes victor and St Leger fourth Father Time, both by Dansili.

The January-born filly hails from one of Juddmonte’s leading families and must rate an attractive long-term prospect, hopefully on the track as well as in the breeding shed, for potential buyers.

Lot 116 B f Wootton Bassett - Was (Galileo) Haras de Capucines Wootton Bassett’s ascent

towards the top of Europe’s sire rankings continues apace, helped by talent such as the Phoenix Stakes winner Bucanero Fuerte, unbeaten Coventry Stakes winner River Tiber and Derby runner-up King Of Steel, and the progeny of the former Haras d’Etreham sire are highly likely to be a major talking point as the sale gets under way.

Bought by Coolmore as a much-needed outcross for their Sadler’s Wells-line broodmares following nine seasons in Normandy, Wootton Bassett is well represented through the three days.

This filly catches the eye as a

King Of Steel: Derby runner-up is helping Wootton Bassett towards the top of Europe’s sire rankings

daughter of Galileo’s 2012 Oaks heroine Was, which makes her a half-sister to Balldoyle’s Weld Park Stakes winner and Irish 1,000 Guineas third Concert Hall, by Dubawi.

Was hails from the bluest of pedigrees as she is out of the stakes-placed winner Alluring Park, a daughter of Irish Champion Stakes winner, the prolific Park Express – making her a half-sister to champion juvenile and Derby hero New Approach, and himself winner of the Irish Champion.

Alluring Park is also related to Group winner and Champion Stakes second Dazzling Park, the granddam of Phoenix Stakes victor Alfred Nobel.

Lot 161

B f Lope De Vega - Birch Grove (Galileo)

Ecurie des Monceaux

A filly out of a stakes-winning Galileo sister to the dam of brilliant July and Commonwealth Cup hero Shaquille – what’s not to like?

Consigned by the sale’s perennial leading vendor Ecurie des Monceaux, this daughter of Lope De Vega is from a family filled with blacktype winners and performers, among them her dam as well as granddam Danehurst, winner of the Flying Five Stakes.

Cheveley Park Stakes winner Hooray features on the page too, as a granddaughter of Belle Et Deluree, herself the dam of black-type horses including the Cherry Hinton Stakes victress and 1,000 Guineas third Dazzle and German stakes scorer and Group 1-placed Baschar. With Shaquille looking the best sprinter around, and as a

SUMMER YEARLINGS ARQANA

three-year-old hopefully with plenty more to come, updates will likely keep coming. His exciting relative will not be short of suitors.

Lot 172

B c Kingman - Channel (Nathaniel)

La Motteraye Consignment

Nathaniel’s results at an early stage of his broodmare sire career suggests he is well on his way to making a sizeable impact in this sphere.

This colt is out of one of his best daughters, the 2019 Prix de Diane heroine Channel, whose first foal, a filly by Sea The Stars, sold to Larrieu Gerard for €400,000 at this sale last year.

Channel’s dam, the winning Love Magic, is by another brilliant broodmare sire in Dansili, while her now twoyear-old Frankel filly sold to Jessica Harrington at Goffs last year for €230,000. It can be assumed there are still updates to come from her immediate family.

Further down the page are the likes of Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance, Oaks heroine Alexandrova, German Group 1 winner Aspetar and Prudenzia, the prolific dam of Group 1 winners Magic Wand and Chicquita.

Lot 194

B c Wootton Bassett - Dream

The Blues (Oasis Dream)

La Motteraye Consignment

A colt with a stallion’s page, for this January-born individual is a half-brother to Coolmore’s leading second-season sire and Phoenix Stakes winner Sioux Nation.

The presence of Oasis Dream as damsire serves to underline just what a force Juddmonte’s stalwart is in this division, while Dream The Blues has produced three winners so far.

There is also Sioux Nation’s three-parts brother by No Nay Never, Alabama, who ran a decent race to be fifth in the Windsor Castle Stakes on his second start before going down by a neck in the Listed Tipperary Stakes last time. A victory is surely on its way for this likeable sort.

Under the second dam, Ballyogan Stakes winner Catch

The Blues, is the dual Group 3 scorer My Catch, multiple Italian stakes winner Royal Ashirah and Prix Morny third Vladimir.

Lot 214

B f Dubawi - Frida La Blonde (Elusive City)

Haras d’Etreham

Haras d’Etreham’s daughter of Dubawi arrives in Deauville as the subject of a Group 1

update courtesy of her Wootton Bassett half-brother Bucanero Fuerte.

The juvenile, a fine second in the Coventry to another son of Wootton Bassett in the unbeaten River Tiber, notched up a Group 2 win of his own in the Railway Stakes before tasting top-level success last weekend with an impressive strike in the Phoenix Stakes back at the Curragh.

The duo are out of the placed Elusive City mare Frida La Blonde, meaning they are either full- or half-siblings to Prix de l’Abbaye winner and Haras de Bouquetot sire Wooded, as well as the Groupplaced Beat Le Bon.

While Bucanero Fuerte was a relatively inexpensive yearling at €165,000 from this sale last year when selling to Robson Aguiar, it is a fair bet his year-younger half-sister will command a significantly higher price on day two of Arqana this time.

Lot 228

B f Blue Point - Golden Lilas (Galileo)

Haras du Cadran Blue Point. Darley’s son of Shamardal, has enjoyed a flying start to his stallion career, with Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, Rose Bowl Stakes scorer Action Point and runaway Pat Eddery Stakes

DISCOVER MORE AT ALSHAQABRACING.COM

winner Rosallion among the highlights from his evergrowing list of winners.

The Kildangan Stud resident is well represented at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, including on day three via this filly out of the very well-related Galileo mare Golden Lilas.

The unraced daughter of Coolmore’s late phenomenon is out of Danehill’s Prix du Moulin winner Grey Lilas, making her a sister to Prix de Diane, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Prix d’Ispahan heroine Golden Lilac, as well as Australian Group winner Grey Lion.

Haras du Cadran’s Marchborn filly has plenty of residual value for when her racing days are over, but in any case the exploits of her sire means she rates an exciting prospect for the track too.

Lot 244

B c Siyouni - Hourglass (Galileo)

Ecurie des Monceaux

Leading French sire Siyouni has long since established his credentials as an elite stallion, but the recent exploits of the exceptional Paddington as well as Irish 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes heroine Tahiyra have shone further light on him.

Ecurie des Monceaux sold one of the Aga Khan stallion’s best progeny in Sottsass at the sale in 2017, for what subsequently proved to be a bargain €340,000. Who knows whether this colt will follow suit, but the fact he is also bred on the powerful SiyouniGalileo nick will no doubt prove mightily attractive to many.

It is a cross that has not only produced Sottsass but fellow Classic winner and champion three-year-old St Mark’s Basilica.

This colt’s dam has already produced a winner in the

Justify gelding Just An Hour, and her pedigree stands out. She is out of Helsinki, making her a half-sister to top-class racehorse and sire Shamardal and Beresford Stakes winner Geoffrey Chaucer.

Helsinki is out of Irish Oaks winner Helen Street, making her a sister to Dubai World Cup winner and influential sire Street Cry.

Lot 267

B c Camelot - Lady Frankel (Frankel)

Gestut Ammerland

Gestut Ammerland’s renowned nursery is a byword for quality, having bred Lope De Vega and co-bred Waldgeist in recent years, and this Camelot colt looks an intriguing offering based on his page.

The son of Coolmore’s multiple Group 1-winning sire Camelot is the third foal out of Lady Frankel, who, as the name suggests, is by Frankel, though her distaff side is of as much interest.

A Group winner in the Prix de Lieurey at three for Andre Fabre, as well as a half-length third to Rhododendron in the Prix de l’Opera, Lady Frankel is out of the Group winner and Prix Marcel Boussac third Lady Vettori, making her a halfsister to Group 1 winner and sire Lope De Vega.

The nine-year-old is also related to Group scorer Bal De La Rose (by Cadeaux Genereux), the dam of German Group 1 winner Danceteria, and Listed winner Lord Of The Land, a Shamardal brother to Lope De Vega.

Lady Frankel’s second foal, a colt by the late Shamardal and therefore a close relation to Lope De Vega, sold to Godolphin for €1,600,000 at Arqana last year. It will be fascinating to see if this fellow can command a similar price.

Lot 308 B c Cracksman - Needleleaf (Observatory)

Haras d’Haspel

Cracksman’s first crop have included a Prix du Jockey Club winner in Ace Impact, as well as Deutsches Derby third and Listed winner Weracruz from five black-type winners overall, so the outstanding son of Frankel should remain a popular option for breeders wanting to get into the Frankel sireline.

Haras d’Haspel bought Needleleaf for 60,000gns from breeder Juddmonte’s draft at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale – and how the Observatory mare has rewarded them and made that price look a bargain.

A sister to Sprint Cup heroine African Rose, the dam of juvenile Group winner Fair Eva, and to French Group winner and Prix Marcel Boussac second Helleborine, the dam of Coventry Stakes scorer and Group-winning first-season sire Calyx, Needleleaf had the family background to succeed as a broodmare, and she has done just that.

Her son by Oasis Dream, Native Trail, had been a graduate of Arqana’s December Sale and Tattersalls Book 1 before selling to Godolphin for 210,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

He subsequently went on to win all four starts at two, including the Dewhurst and National Stakes, to be crowned 2021’s champion juvenile. He also landed Classic honours in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at three, while finishing second in the Newmarket equivalent to his ill-fated stablemate Coroebus, as well as a close-up third to Vadeni in the CoralEclipse.

HARAS DE L’HOTELLERIE

WHEN JeanPierre Garcon speaks of “a pretty exceptional year” on the track for graduates of the Haras de l’Hotellerie, there is no hint of exaggeration.

The family farm he and wife Isabelle founded in partnership with their son Guillaume just 12 years ago is now home to around 100 broodmares.

Ramatuelle has blazed a trail across the early two-year-old Group races in France and heads to the Sumbe Prix Morny this Sunday as the leading home hope.

Hotellerie also raised Jigme, a son of Motivator who dominated the three-year-old hurdles division at Auteuil this spring and has already been syndicated to stand at stud in France once his racing career is over.

Both were bred by Yeguada Centurion, as was Blue Rose Cen, who carries their increasingly familiar royal blue and white silks and, having knocked off the Prix Marcel Boussac last October, added a pair of Classics in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and the Prix de Diane, a treble

achieved previously by Allez France, Divine Proportions and Zarkava.

“For a breeder, days like those are the summit,” says Garcon snr. “It’s what you hope for every horse you breed, but there are not many that get there.

“They were great days and the owner, Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, shared every part of the experience with us.

Prix Morny hope Ramatuelle blazing red-hot trail for family operation

It is hugely satisfying for everyone involved to breed a horse like Blue Rose Cen.”

There is some irony that, as we sit on a porch looking out over a portion of the 250 hectares of Hotellerie, the news of an unlucky defeat for Blue Rose Cen in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood is less than an hour old.

Both men watched the race on their phones while out in

the paddocks, and you sense that, even had the result gone a different way, there would not have been rivers of champagne flowing back at the house.

Jean-Pierre spent 26 years managing at Haras de Montaigu, while Guillaume – in common with many of the new generation of Normandy breeders – left France to learn more about the

business around the world.

“I was an apprentice at Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard and I also spent some time at Ecurie des Monceaux between trips abroad,” says Guillaume, whose travels took in Ireland, Britain, the United States and Australia.

“I started off at Camas Park Stud and then Coolmore in Ireland, before going down to Coolmore Australia.

“Then I went to Indian Creek in the US, which was great. I finished up in Britain, where I did the whole sales circuit.”

He adds “It was all geared towards breeding and sales preparation and while I was in the US, I was already thinking about my next steps in France and perhaps setting up a small breeding operation.

“We found this place and it was a little bit too big for me on my own. My parents said, if that’s where you want to set up, we’ll share the adventure with you.

“There had never been horses on this land and we had to put a lot of structural work in initially; everything needed redoing from A to Z so that we could have it all just as we wanted.”

JEAN-PIERRE was particularly attracted to the opportunity to restart from scratch, rather than take on an existing stud.

“I won’t show you any photos because it was in a very sorry state!” he says.

“The thing I liked is that this had been a cattle station, so there had never been horses here before. That was important to me.

“The land must not be too bad because we bred a Group 1 winner very quickly.”

The horse in question was Mubtaahij, a son of Dubawi who the Garcons sold from their very first yearling draft at Arqana and who won the UAE Derby and Santa Anita’s Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes.

The legacy of her dam, Pennegale, is present among the select seven yearlings Hotellerie will send to Deauville this week.

Her daughter, the Intello

mare Private Success, is responsible for lot 26, a colt by Haras d’Etreham’s Persian King.

Of the choice of Dubawi, Guillaume says: “When you get a really good mare who has already proved herself, you shouldn’t hesitate to send them to the best stallions. We send around 50 mares to Britain and Ireland each year.

“This colt is stamped by his sire but is a nice size. Some people can be worried by Persian King because he is such an imposing physical.

“But crossed with quite a small, neat Intello mare, we’ve ended up with a very nice horse; well proportioned and with good balance.

“He’s a quality colt who carries plenty of his father in him. Pennegale produced Lily Of The Valley by Galileo, so we know it’s a cross that works well.”

While the Hotellerie name is rarely out of the news it seems, the team are also helped by a nice bit of timing; among the yearlings heading to Deauville they have fillies by two of the

hottest sires of the moment, as well as a third whose female line is also making a lot of headlines.

City Of Troy and the Yeguada Centurion-bred Ramatuelle – born here and sold by Garcon pere et fils to Arthur Hoyeau for €100,000 in August last year – have ensured that the three lots by US Triple Crown hero Justify will be among the busiest during inspections this week at Arqana.

Guillaume believes lot 242, a filly out of the Maclean’s Music mare Hollywood Glory and bred by Yeguada, will not disappoint.

“In terms of timing and the buzz around Justify, it couldn’t be better,” he says. “She is completely different to Ramatuelle physically. Ramatuelle is really made like a sprinter. This filly shares a similar character with Ramatuelle and the other Justifys that I’ve seen, in that they all have plenty of energy.

“They are always ready for action and on the lunging rein, they give a lot.

“She has a wonderful

shoulder, a good mind and she loves her work. She is a very attractive mover as well. It’s a pleasure to be associated with Justify, I like him a lot.”

There are rather more Siyounis in the catalogue but, with the exploits of Tahiyra and the Arqana brochure’s cover star, Paddington, fresh in the minds of buyers, there are hopes that lot 285, a daughter of the Le Havre mare Malevra, can at least match the exploits of her Wootton Bassett halfsister, who made €200,000 when sold to Klaravich Stables here last year.

“We bought the mare along with agent Frederic Sauque for a client who had been a long time in the trotting world and was launching his interest in thoroughbreds,” says Guillaume.

“He’s a fantastic client who has invested heavily; the mare was €430,000 at the sales carrying to Wootton Bassett. We sold the Wootton Bassett to the US last year and she is posting some nice times for her breezes.”

He adds of this filly: “She is a

wonderful Siyouni, very much stamped by the sire and the right size. While she might not be that precocious, she has an awful lot of class and is just what you are looking for in the daughters of Siyouni. She is very expressive and does everything well.

“And we have a super filly foal by Siyouni coming up behind her. Obviously we’ve sent Malevra to the right stallion, but I think she is also a top broodmare.”

PUJALS is responsible for a couple of exotic crosses among the draft, including a Zarak filly out of an allAmerican family (224), the only yearling by Maximum Security in the catalogue (246), and what Guillaume freely admits is a “very big” colt by No Nay Never out of the fine racemare La Berma (265), about whom he adds: “I’m not sure we’ve taken one as big to the sales.”

But the Yeguada Centurion trademark might be most

evident in lot 240, a daughter of Ten Sovereigns out of the Aga Khan-bred and -raced mare Haziyna, herself a halfsister to dual Derby hero Harzand.

Another of Haziyna’s siblings is Harasiya, the dam of Jockey Club and Jacques le Marois runner-up Big Rock, another of the flagbearers this season on the track for Pujals and trainer Christopher Head.

“The filly has a lot of class and I think she has quite a bit of Big Rock about her,” says Guillaume.

“She is well muscled and has a beautiful head, built for speed.

“I really like her and I’m also a big believer in Ten Sovereigns. They aren’t always the most precocious but I hope he will have a big autumn.

“People probably expected fireworks a little too soon but I think he could enjoy some success in the second half of the year.”

Pujals sold Haziyna at Arqana last December, at which time Big Rock was yet to break his maiden.

Guillaume is unapologetic and fully shares his client’s belief in moving on mares with little sentiment.

He says: “Personally, I can become disappointed in a mare quite quickly and you shouldn’t hesitate to turn over horses and to renew the stock.

“You can try different matings but if a mare hasn’t given you satisfaction by the second or third product, I wouldn’t persist.

“You never know, that mare could still produce a nice horse, but I think you have a better chance trying with another.”

Renewal seems to be a recurring theme at Haras de l’Hotellerie. What remains constant is the personalised, a la carte service the Garcon family gives to all the horses they present at the sales, virtually all of whom are bred and raised on this land, whether from their own stock or that of their clients.

That should ensure there are many more headlines to write, perhaps starting this week.

Al Dasim

3yo ch c Harry Angel - Dance Hall Girl (Dansili)

The half-brother to Flying Scotsman Stakes winner Tashweeq hails from champion sprinter Harry Angel’s first crop and has been a fine flagbearer alongside Prix Sigy scorer Marshman.

The Skymarc Farm-bred three-year-old had made £50,000 from Goffs UK when selling to owner Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah last August and initially went through two trainers in Clive Cox and Kevin Philippart de Foy before arriving at George Boughey’s Newmarket base.

Having landed a Windsor maiden on his second start for De Foy, scoring by an easy four lengths, he has progressed with time and experience, winning back-to-back Wolverhampton novice contests last autumn.

The colt made it five wins on the spin by going on to notch a hat-trick at Meydan this year, featuring a convincing Group 3 success, while he wasn’t disgraced when beaten just three lengths in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night.

Not seen since, he has a scopey frame to fill and can be expected to improve again.

– not a bad return for a £19,000 yearling two years ago.

One of four individual Group winners – among nine black-type winners – for Coolmore’s second-season sire and Phoenix Stakes winner Sioux Nation, the three-yearold has already achieved

plenty in 18 months of racing.

A three-time winner at two last season, Brave Emperor graduated from a Class 4 nursery at Wolverhampton in November to his first stakes success at Cagnes-sur-Mer in February and then on to victory in the Group 3 Dr Busch-Memorial at Krefeld in April. He was third at the same level at Bro Park and just this

month won the Prix Daphnis at Deauville, also Group 3.

Brave Emperor is a fine advert for breeders Caroline Hanly and Sean Ronan, as well as his dam, the maiden Holy Roman Emperor mare Roman Gal, a close relation to the black type-placed Madernia (by Holy Roman Emperor) and the Listed-winning Salouen (Canford Cliffs), a close second

Equality

5yo b g Equiano - Penny Drops (Invincible Spirit)

Equiano’s most prolific son

The Tin Man reeled off three Group 1 successes and while such a feat may be a bridge too far for Equality, Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds’ gelding is enjoying the best season of his career, with a near six-length score in a Windsor Class 2 handicap in June preceding a ready win in the Group 3 Coral Charge last month.

The five-year-old has proved

good value for his £50,000 price tag at the 2019 Premier Yearling Sale, when he sold to Kern/Lillingston Association from Highclere Stud.

The Charlie Hills-trained runner has won five times and placed on a further six occasions for prize-money of just over £135,000, while connections are obviously confident in his ability to progress further with entries in the Nunthorpe and Flying Five Stakes.

He was unplaced behind Highfield Princess at Goodwood this month, but can do better as the track

doesn’t seem to play to his strengths.

He is the second foal out of the Invincible Spirit mare Penny Drops, a winner over six furlongs on the all-weather for William Haggas and breeders the Middlebrooks, while she was also Listed-placed on five occasions.

Equality is one of four individual winners for the 12-year-old from five runners, the others including Badri, by Dark Angel and winner of a valuable handicap at Epsom on Derby day.

Fev Rover

5yo b m Gutaifan - Laurelita (High Chaparral)

Fev Rover’s consistency and durability was rewarded with a first victory at the top level when annexing the Beverly D Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday – in doing so she became the first Group/Grade 1 winner for her sire, the Haras des Faunes-based Gutaifan.

Five-year-old Fev Rover was bred by Manister House Stud and sold to Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock for just £20,000 at the Premier Yearling Sale in 2019.

She proved a star two-yearold for the Richard Fahey stable, winning the Listed Star Stakes and Group 3 Prix du Calvados, and trained on to finish third in the 1,000 Guineas and second in the Boomerang Mile at three.

After being runner-up in a Grade 2 at Woodbine for Mark Casse, she made 695,000gns to Tracy Farmer at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, and continued in the care of Casse. She has subsequently added three more Graded wins to her name, most notably last weekend, when she stormed three and a half lengths clear of her Beverly D rivals, taking her prize-money haul to not far off $1 million.

Jasour

2yo g c Havana Grey - Twilight

Thyme (Bahamian Bounty)

A first Group 2 winner for the red-hot Havana Grey, Jasour took the market by surprise when storming to a two-length win at 16-1 in Newmarket’s July Stakes. Unlucky not to win on his debut at Salisbury when

beaten a neck as he lost a shoe, he then got the job done by half a length at Nottingham the following month.

Bred by Wardley Bloodstock out of the unraced Twilight Thyme – a Bahamian Bounty half-sister to top-class sprinter and Cheveley Park Stud sire

Twilight Son – Jasour made £85,000 to Clive Cox at Doncaster 12 months ago.

Hailing from a top-notch sprint family, one that received another boost with recent July Cup second Run To Freedom –a Muhaarar half–brother to Twilight Thyme and Twilight Son – another Group score or two for Jasour would not go amiss for his future stallion prospects.

The juvenile looks a typically speedy and tough son of Havana Grey and it will be fascinating to see how far he can go.

Mammas Girl

3yo ch f Havana Grey - Mamma

Morton (Elnadim)

Another on the roll of honour of Whitsbury Manor’s Havana Grey, such is the secondseason sire’s outstanding run of form, and this Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale graduate also deserves a mention for her victory in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes this year.

Bred by Robert Cornelius out of the placed Elnadim mare Mamma Morton, a daughter of French 1,000 Guineas third Gharam, Mammas Girl is a half-sister to Rose Bowl winner and Richmond and Mill Reef Stakes second Master Of War.

She was a good buy at just £35,000 by Peter and Ross Doyle from WH Bloodstock.

She ran once at two, when landing a Newmarket novice, and her turn of foot in the Nell Gwyn was impressive.

She was given a chance at Group 1 level in the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes, and then was nearest at the finish when sixth, dropped back to six furlongs, in the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York last month.

That felt like something of a confidence booster, one which could set her up for a more productive second half of 2023.

Lot 11

Bay colt Siyouni - Lady

Darshaan (High Chaparral)

Consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud

With a pedigree steeped in high-class performers and by one of the sires of the moment, Lynn Lodge Stud’s colt has plenty of upside early on in the Doncaster sale.

He is out of a High Chaparral mare who was a winner on her second start at two and then placed third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes and second in the Fillies’ Mile, the latter behind Hibaayeb, the dam of Breeders’ Cup heroine Wuheida.

Lady Darshaan is the dam of two stakes winners in Beholding, a daughter of the late Le Havre, and Let’s Go, a gelding by Street Cry. The now 16-year-old is out of the winning Green Desert mare Diary, making her a half-sister to the Prix de l’Abbaye winner Total Gallery and a sister to stakes scorer Tempest Fugit.

Group 1 quality runs throughout the page as under the third dam, the Listedplaced Darshaan mare Darrery, is top-level winner Ambivalent, a daughter of Authorized who is the dam of Prix Vermeille winner Teona and Prix Hocquart winner Al Hilalee.

Lot 48

B c Wootton Bassett - Marsh Hawk (Invincible Spirit) Highclere Stud Wootton Bassett’s formidable first Irish-bred crop of yearlings take to the sales ring this year and this individual stands out for a number of reasons.

Consigned by Highclere

Stud, the March-born colt is out of Invincible Spirit’s Dick Poole Stakes second Marsh Hawk, making him a brother to last year’s high-class juvenile, the Flying Childers and Molecomb Stakes winner Trillium.

The duo are related to two further stakes performers in Mohawk King and American Kestrel, while Marsh Hawk is a half-sister to Queen Mary Stakes third Hairy Rocket, the dam of Futurity Stakes third The Acropolis.

Further down the black type-filled page is the late Queen’s Dante Stakes winner, Derby third and Prince of Wales’s Stakes second Carlton House, while Group winner and Prix Maurice de Gheest second Three Points also features.

Lot 102

Ch c StarspangledbannerPatience Alexander (Kodiac) Mountarmstrong Stud

A son of the ever-popular Starspangledbanner and out of Kodiac’s Marygate Stakes winner Patience Alexander, this colt exemplifies the type of

horse presented at the Premier Yearling Sale.

The February-born chestnut’s page is topped by his stakes-winning dam, who is out of the winning Sadler’s Wells mare Star Profile.

Another of Star Profile’s daughters is First Of Many, the dam of Listed winner and Group-placed Green Desert mare Many Colours, in turn the dam of 1,000 Guineas heroine Mother Earth and Italian Group scorer Night Colours.

And there could be plenty more to add to an already power-packed page as Mother Earth visited the mighty Frankel for her first date this year, while her Sioux Nation half-sister, Ocean Jewel, was an impressive winner of the Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown in June.

Now a Group winner, the €230,000 Goffs Orby graduate and Al Shira’aa Farms-owned three-year-old looks set for loftier targets in due course, including perhaps next month’s Group 1 Matron Stakes.

Lot

154 B f Oasis Dream - Rubia Bella (Bated Breath) Kilcarn Park

A valuable filly in both the short and longer term, given Oasis Dream’s undisputed brilliance as a broodmare sire, this Kilcarn Park offering on day one is out of the wellrelated Bated Breath mare Rubia Bella, an unraced sister to Group 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Space Traveller.

Clipper Logistics’ high-class performer has completed his first season at Ballyhane Stud, while there are likely updates to come with Rubia Bella’s dam, Sky Crystal, having a two-yearold filly by Cracksman as well as a Bated Breath yearling brother to Lot 154.

This filly is the six-year-old Rubia Bella’s first foal and there is plenty of depth to her page, with Prix Jean Prat victor Zelzal and Lancashire Oaks winner and Yorkshire Oaks third State Crystal featuring, alongside Australian Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Libran and May Hill Stakes victress Solar Crystal.

B c Havana Grey - Ski Slope (Three Valleys) Hillwood Stud

Havana Grey’s yearlings will surely be in massive demand courtesy of his brilliant results once again this year, and Hillwood Stud’s colt has plenty going for him based on his active page.

The bay is out of the winning Ski Slope, a Cheveley Parkbred daughter of Coventry Stakes winner and Dewhurst runner-up Three Valleys and Flying Five Stakes winner Danehurst, by Danehill.

That means Ski Slope is a half-sister to the unraced Galileo mare Magic, the dam of this season’s brilliant Commonwealth Cup and July Cup hero Shaquille.

Ski Slope is also immediately related to stakes winner Birch Grove, also by Galileo, as well as Pole Position, the dam of a stakes winner and Graded performer in Japan.

Under third dam Miswaki Belle is Prix Penelope winner Humouresque, another producer of stakes performers, as well as Hardwicke Stakes third Mighty and 2023 Naas Listed winner Cosmic Vega.

Lot 234

B c Sea The Stars - Tiger Eye (Frankel) Barton Stud

The reverse of the Sea The Stars - Frankel nick has already produced a top-level victor in last year’s Grand Prix de Paris winner Onesto, and

there is cause for hope that it will prove equally fruitful for the same partnership.

This Barton Stud-consigned colt is out of a mare who was a three-time winner and fourth in a Listed event from just seven starts for Qatar Racing and James Fanshawe. Already the dam of a winner in Mohatu, by Roaring Lion, Tiger Eye is a typically well-related daughter of Frankel.

The eight-year-old is out of the unraced Rainbow Quest mare Crystal Gaze, making her a half-sister to a trio of Group 2 winners in Spirit Quartz, Caspian Prince and Tuscan Gaze, as well as the unraced Contrary, the dam of Hong Kong champion stayer Irishcorrespondent.

Also on the page is German champion juvenile Winter Quarters, German Group 2 winner and sire Passing Glance, and Hong Kong Group winner and top level-placed Aspect.

Harry Angel has gone from strength to strength with his first three-year-olds this year and, as a sire who is more than able to get precocious juveniles, his stock will likely be in plenty of demand at Doncaster.

sister to champion two- and three-year-old filly Inspiral. That Frankel filly is undoubtedly Starscope’s best progeny, but the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes-placed Selkirk mare has also produced Celestran, a multiple winner and stakes-placed performer by Dansili.

The family has typically strong roots as under the fourth dam, Sweet Solera Stakes winner and Queen Mary second Mystic Goddess, is the Coral-Eclipse, Lockinge and Queen Anne winner Medicean, a late stalwart of the Cheveley Park stallion roster.

Lot 321

B f Kameko - Bewitchment

(Pivotal)

Manister House Stud

The first crop by Tweenhills’ 2,000 Guineas and Vertem Futurity hero Kameko will grace the yearling sales circuit this term, and it includes this half-sister to Nymphadora, who enhanced the page further with a second Listed success at her beloved York in mid-July. Offered by Manister House Stud, this filly is out of the placed Pivotal mare Bewitchment, a daughter of stakes winner Hypnotize and a half-sister to Cheveley Park and Lowther Stakes heroine Hooray

and black-type scorer Hypnotic. Another with a tip-top Cheveley Park family, Danehurst, the granddam of Shaquille, appears under the third dam via her daughter Miswaki Belle, while others include Cherry Hinton winner and 1,000 Guineas third Dazzle plus German stakes winner and Grosser Preis von Berlin third Baschar.

Lot 338 B c Dark Angel - Capulet

Monteque (Camacho)

Yeomanstown Stud

A brother to two black-type

performers, including Rockfel Stakes winner Juliet Capulet, this colt is one of a number by Yeomanstown Stud stalwart Dark Angel set to be offered in Doncaster.

Aside from being a brother to a Group-winning juvenile, the January-born colt has a page filled with high-class talent.

Second dam Family At War’s progeny take up half the catalogue page, with the Explodent mare’s talented daughter Flanders, the Listed winner and King’s Stand Stakes second, producing

SHAMAN

Sprint Cup winner G Force and Louvain, the dam of Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Flotilla, herself a half-sister to the dam of 2022 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Mangoustine, by Dark Angel.

Family At War was also the dam of the once-raced Land Army, a daughter of Desert Style who in turn produced July Cup and Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner Lethal Force, another by Dark Angel.

Lot 381

B f Kodiac - Dubai Rainbow (Tamayuz) Tally-Ho Stud Tally-Ho needs no introduction and the O’Callaghan family’s County Westmeath operation presents a filly by its flagship stallion and from a family with plenty of class.

The Kodiac filly is the first foal out of the winning Tamayuz mare Dubai Rainbow, a daughter of the Giant’s Causeway mare In Dubai.

That makes Dubai Rainbow a half-sister to Railway Stakes winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint second Go Bears Go, also top-level placed when third to Ebro River in the Phoenix Stakes.

The winning In Dubai is out of Ribblesdale Stakes winner and Oaks second Bahr, making her a half-sister to dual Group/ Grade 1 winner Nahrain, the dam of Godolphin’s top-class globetrotter and Japan-based sire Benbatl.

It is also the family of Group 3 winner and Starfield Stud sire Far Above, whose first yearlings sell this year.

Lot 405

B c Pinatubo - Fig Roll (Bahamian Bounty)

Longview Stud Pinatubo was retired to Dalham Hall Stud as the highest-rated son of Shamardal courtesy of his nine-length romp in the National Stakes at two – he was officially rated above Frankel at the same age and his mark of 128 was the best for a juvenile in Europe for 25 years. All of which will undoubtedly equal great

BUYERS, take note: the Flannery family’s Egmont Stud in County Cork has a remarkably good record of selling talented horses at the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale.

anticipation for his first crop of yearlings coming under the hammer this summer and autumn.

The three-time Group 1 winner received more than 300 high-class mares in his first two books and it seems safe to assume that quality will out as the yearling sales season progresses.

This colt is out of a juvenile stakes winner in Fig Roll, making him a half-brother to another fine juvenile in Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg winner Al Raya, by Siyouni.

Fig Roll is out of another juvenile stakes winner in Acclamation’s daughter Cake, also the dam of another speedy black-type performer in Tomily, while also on the page is Hong Kong Listed winner Classic Fountain and Hungerford Stakes third Brazos.

Lot 415 B c Aclaim - Freedom Spirit (Muhaarar)

Wood Hall Sales

This colt by Classic-winning sire and Group 1 winner Aclaim hails from a speedy family, being out of an unraced half-sister to champion sprinter Sole Power, whose impressive CV included two wins in both the King’s Stand and Nunthorpe Stakes, as well as strikes in the Al Quoz Sprint and Flying Five Stakes.

Consigned by Wood Hall Sales, the bay is the second foal out of Freedom Spirit, a daughter of Muhaarar. Her first, named Great Acclaim, is a brother to this yearling and has not yet raced for the Eve Johnson Houghton yard, though he has been given entries in sales races at Newmarket this month and in October.

The colt’s second dam, the unraced Distant View mare Demerger, has also produced the stakes-placed Sotka, by Dutch Art and the dam of two Group scorers in Prix Sigy winner Fas and Prix Bertrand de Tarragon victress Silva.

Fast Flow, the dam of Champagne Stakes winner and Dewhurst second Auction House, also features in the family, alongside Nunthorpe second Fine Edge.

What’s more, many of the lots it has sent through the ring at the South Yorkshire venue are the holy grail for trainers and owners, in that they are not only precocious but also durable, able to compete in big races long past their juvenile seasons.

For example Chiswick Bey, sold to Gill Richards for £90,000 in 2009, won the Brocklesby Stakes and finished third in the Premier Yearling Stakes at two, and retired at the age of ten with 11 victories and £110,000 in prize-money under his belt.

Then there was Lathom, who was sold to Highfield Farm for £39,000 in 2014 and won connections three times his purchase price when successful in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at two, and was still hoovering up handicaps at the age of six.

Brian The Snail is another case in point. Sold to Bobby O’Ryan for £50,000 in 2015, he was unbeaten in two starts at two, when he was bought by Godolphin, and later developed into a solid sprint handicapper. He won his tenth race at the age of nine this year, pushing his earnings further into six figures.

Edward Cornelius, Lucky Lucky Man and Hartswood are among the other Egmont Studconsigned Doncaster yearlings who won at two and kept on winning over multiple seasons.

The farm even took a future Group 1-winning juvenile to Doncaster a decade ago this year, as the Verglas colt it sold to Joseph Murphy for £32,000 won the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud by fourth lengths under the name Vert De Grece, before being sold to Hong Kong, where he competed as The Monarch.

The Egmont Stud draft in Doncaster this month therefore demanded close attention anyway but, as it happens, it also contains a colt with a highly important pedigree update.

Lot 64, consigned on behalf of his breeder Sandra Russell, is a Dandy Man half-brother to Excellent Truth, who already had lower-case black type for finishing second in the Prix Chloe and Prix Melisande, but graduated to upper-case when scoring in the Prix de Psyche at Deauville at the end of last month.

The colt, also a half-brother

‘We like to find early two-year-olds who keep going’

to Italian 1,000 Guineas third Memo De L’Alguer, actually has another significant upgrade to his page thanks to the summer meeting at Deauville, as his dam Moment Of Truth is a half-sister to Damask, the dam of narrowly beaten Prix Maurice de Gheest second Spycatcher.

“He belongs to a good friend of ours, Sandra Russell, who didn’t sell him as a foal, as he was just a bit overgrown, and sent him to us to prep instead,” says Mark Flannery, who runs Egmont Stud with sister Paula and wife Jess.

“We’ve had him for about the last two months, and he’s done really well. He’s a big, goodmoving horse with lots of size and scope, and a great mind on him; he’s just straightforward.

“Dandy Man is your typical solid Donny sire, he produces the goods on the track year after year, and it’s a great pedigree that goes back to Reprocolor.

“The update from his halfsister should help him big time, and it could get even better as she’s going for the Prix de l’Opera on Arc weekend.”

The son of Dandy Man is one of four yearlings being sent from Egmont Stud to Doncaster this year, along with two other colts by Far Above and Kodi Bear, and a filly by Invincible Spirit.

The Far Above colt (335) is out of the winning Kheleyf mare California Tee. His page features his fifth dam, which could lead you to believe his

pedigree is a little light, but scratch the surface and you’ll find that the dam received high ratings for winning decent sprint races in France at two and three, and that she is a half-sister to several more smart performers who didn’t quite get black type, including the 93-rated Tiger Jim.

“Yes, there are plenty of good winners in this pedigree,” says Flannery. “They probably didn’t get to the bottom of California Tee, but she was precocious and held in high regard.

“Far Above is an interesting sire prospect, as he was a very quick horse with a lot of ability, and his sire Farhh has done really well with limited numbers.

“I certainly like this colt by

A RICH HISTORY SUCCESS

him. He’s a grand horse with a good walk, and really simple to do anything with.”

The colt by Kodi Bear (391), whose yearlings of 2023 were bred in the warm glow of his encouraging results with his debut two-year-olds, is out of Emilandra, a Slade Power halfsister to the stakes-placed pair French Quebec and Perfect Madge.

“Kodi Bear’s done it the hard way, he’s shown he’s a tough and consistent sire with small numbers, and this is now his best bunch of yearlings, so we should hear more about him,” says Flannery. “This colt’s female family is incredibly prolific, there are multiple winners in every generation on the page.

“He’s a fine, big, strong,

good-looking horse who walks well and he has an excellent temperament too.”

The Invincible Spirit filly (162) is meanwhile out of the Oasis Dream mare Safeenah, a close relation to champion sprinter Muhaarar, and so is in possession of serious residual value.

“A lovely, sharp, quality filly who looks like she should be an early two-year-old, as she already has plenty of strength about her,” is Flannery’s verdict of the pinhook. “Her pedigree has a solid look all the way down.”

EGMONT STUD participates in just about every sector of bloodstock sales, so Flannery is uniquely positioned to comment on the health of the market.

Asked for his forecast for conditions at this season’s yearling sales, he says: “I’d be positive enough, trade has been good at all levels and in all areas so far this year.

“The breeze-ups were very strong, so there should be a good level of reinvestment from pinhookers again, although I dare say that trade will generally be as selective as it has been for the last few years. If your horse hits the target, you’ll do very well, but if not,

you might just struggle a bit.

“I see no reason to be pessimistic yet, anyway. There seems to be enough money around, so it should filter down to every level.”

Egmont Stud’s excellent track record for presenting proper racehorses in Doncaster should certainly appeal to the market, anyway. Regarding all those graduates who were sharp enough to shine at two but were no fly-by-nights and matured well too, Flannery says with a laugh: “We don’t deliberately do it!

“But maybe it says something about the sorts of horses we buy. We like to find those early two-year-olds, but we also want to make sure they have the physical and mental toughness to be able to keep going for the people who buy them.

“Straightforward horses that trainers love having around the place, who they can go to war with early but keep taking to the big Saturday races for years after: that’s what we’re looking to bring to the market and we’re proud to be associated with a good few of them.”

Moon a fantastic graduate from German sale

Fantastic Moon

3yo b c Sea The MoonFrangipani (Jukebox Jury)

Fantastic Moon is undeniably well bred, being by Deutsches Derby sensation Sea The Moon out of a winning halfsister to Group 3 scorer Fearless King from the family of Pattern winners Four Sins, Germane and Kilmah, and yet he was able to be bought from the draft of breeders

Stauffenberg Bloodstock for just €49,000.

He proved to be a fine bargain for buyers Liberty Racing, winning the Preis der Winterfavoriten at two and the Baden-Baden Derby Trial and Deutsches Derby this season at three. He was last seen finishing a more than respectable second to Nations Pride in Group 1 company at Munich, and is entered for the Irish Champion Stakes.

There are eight chances to buy a Sea The Moon in BadenBaden in a fortnight’s time, including a three-parts sister to Preis der Diana heroine

Miss Yoda from Gestüt Etzean (lot 174) and a closely related half-sister to SchwarzgoldRennen winner Meerjungfrau from Gestüt Görlsdorf (173).

Muskoka

3yo ch f Sea The Moon - Morning Mist (Peintre Celebre)

Muskoka completed the German Derby and Oaks double for Sea The Moon

when scoring in the Preis der Diana at Dusseldorf this month. She spearheaded a clean sweep of the places for the Lanwades Stud-based sire to boot, with Kassada and Sea

The Lady finishing second and third.

The Henk Grewe-trained filly, who also has a Group 3 and Listed score to her name, is out of Morning Mist, a

Finding big-race winners at BBAG is so easy it can even happen by accident – as Cologne owner Holger Renz found when he thought he’d stopped bidding on a son of Guiliani in 2020 only to have more inadvertent offers accepted by the auctioneer as he made hand gestures on a mobile phone call to a friend.

The colt Renz had knocked down to him at €38,000 was named Tunnes and became a half-brother to an Arc winner in the next year, when Torquator Tasso struck in Paris, and landed the Grosser Preis von Bayern by ten lengths himself in the season after that.

Fantastic Moon: winner of the German Derby at Hamburg

Lot

Brown colt Wootton BassettSecretina (Galileo)

Consigned by Gestüt

Brümmerhof

Wootton Bassett has been in flying form this season, with a high ratio of two-year-old winners including Group 1 and 2 scorers Bucanero Fuerte and River Tiber, and King Of Steel running second in the Derby. That has whetted the appetite for his first crop of yearlings conceived at a sixfigure fee at Coolmore, who include this half-brother to Listed-placed Santorini out of a Galileo half-sister to Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania.

Lot 44 B c Teofilo - Dyanamore (Mt Livermore)

Gestüt Karlshof

The Faust family’s Gestüt Karlshof are one of Germany’s best breeders, producing a good few stakes winners every year and building Sacarina into one of the most influential German broodmares of recent years. Their draft to BadenBaden contains this Teofilo full-brother to Group 1 heroine Donjah and two other stakes horses, out of a Listed-placed daughter of Mt Livermore.

Lot 46

B c Zarak - Eloge (Galileo)

Gestüt Röttgen

Zarak has been dazzling the industry with his high strikerates of winners and Pattern performers, led by Group 2 winners Purplepay and Straight and Group 1-placed Crown Princesse, La Parisienne, Times Square and Zagrey, and so his yearlings should be hot property. There are six to choose from at BBAG, including this fabulously well-bred halfbrother to three winners out of a daughter of Galileo and Preis der Diana victress Enora.

Here’s one that British and Irish pinhookers would be wise to check out: a filly by Mehmas, a prolific source of accomplished two-year-olds, sprinters and milers, out of a Listed-placed Iffraaj half-sister to black-type winner Princess Charm. Former classy juvenile Method and stakes-placed Shelton and Virgin Isla were also bred on the MehmasIffraaj cross.

Lot 55 B c Kingman - La Saldana (Fastnet Rock)

Lot 153 B c Camelot - Anna Katharina (Kallisto)

Gestüt Röttgen

The sole lot in Baden-Baden by triple Classic hero Camelot, from whom German breeders have produced elite winners Sammarco and Sunny Queen, is a half-brother to Listed scorer Ankunft out of the Group 3-winning Kallisto mare Anna Katharina. This is an inform family nurtured by leading breeders Gestüt Röttgen that yielded last year’s champions Ardakan and Assistent.

Lot 156

B f Sea The Stars - Beata (Silver Frost)

Stauffenberg Bloodstock

German breeders love Sea The Stars, unsurprisingly when he tends to impart abundant class and stamina, and supplied the brilliant Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon. There are four lots by him in the sale, including this half-sister to German champion and multiple Group winner Best Of Lips – whom the dam Beata, a half-sister to Prix de Diane heroine Bright Sky, managed to get from the underwhelming sire The Gurkha.

Lot 180

B f Too Darn Hot - Quaduna (Duke Of Marmalade)

Gestüt Fährhof

Too Darn Hot has made an encouraging start with his introductory two-year-olds, with plenty of exciting maiden and novice winners among

their number, and he has wellbred crops to follow. This filly by the dual champion son of Dubawi is a half-sister to last year’s leading German twoyear-old filly Quantanamera, and her first two dams Quaduna and Quelle Amore are both Group winners.

Lot 189

B c Frankel - Vagabonde (Acclamation)

Ronald Rauscher

The only lot by the incomparable Frankel in the catalogue is a colt out of Vagabonde, a dual winning

Acclamation half-sister to Group-winning twoyear-olds Kalahara (also by Frankel) and Sasparella, from the prestigious family of Intello, Mondialiste and Occupandiste. His full-sister sold here for €250,000 last year and has been named Comic Book and placed in training with Jessica Harrington for Yulong Investments.

Lot 196

B c Soldier Hollow - Achinora (Sleeping Indian)

Gestüt Auenquelle Soldier Hollow is a multiple

champion sire in Germany and has supplied Group 1 winners Dschingis Secret, Ivanhowe, Pastorius, Serienholde and Weltstar, but he should be on the radar of British and Irish buyers as his stock has considerable resale into the jumps sphere, where he has been represented by Arctic Fire and Saldier, and Australia, where Ivanhowe took the Doomben Cup. This colt by the son of In The Wings is a fullbrother to three winners including dual Group 3 scorer and German 1,000 Guineas runner-up Axana.

SUMMER YEARLINGS BBAG

FOCUS ON ADLERFLUG

ADLERFLUG was by the accomplished sire In The Wings and from one of his breeder Gestüt Schlenderhan’s best families, tracing back to the phenomenal blue hen mare Urban Sea’s granddam Anatevka.

The striking chestnut with four long white socks and big white blaze lived up to his impressive pedigree by winning the Deutsches Derby at three and DeutschlandPreis at four, each time by seven lengths, and he is widely recognised as the most important sire to have stood in Germany since the mighty Monsun.

He has supplied 28 blacktype winners and counting, including seven at the highest level, several of whom have shone beyond Germany’s borders: Torquator Tasso, who beat a stellar international field to land the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; In Swoop, who beat Torquator Tasso in the Deutsches Derby and was later a neck second to Sottsass in the Arc; Alenquer, who took the Tattersalls Gold Cup; and domestic stars Iquitos, Ito, Lacazar and Mendocino.

Surprisingly, however, Adlerflug’s path to greatness was a rocky one. It took him years to gain the respect of German breeders, and by the time they were convinced it was all too late. He succumbed to a heart attack early in the 2021 covering season, when his fee had been raised from €10,000 to €16,000, leaving a small last crop – six of whom will be offered at the BBAG Yearling Sale next month.

Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten, a leading figure in the German racing industry who has been celebrating a rare double having campaigned through his own syndicates or

partnerships both this year’s Deutsches Derby victor Fantastic Moon and Preis der Diana heroine Muskoka (who he also bred with ex-wife Antje), managed the career of Adlerflug in the latter half of the sire’s career, which he says got off to a shaky start.

“The problem was he was a small horse with a physique that wasn’t that impressive, and he was injured early in his last season racing, so he wasn’t deemed to be a top breeding prospect even though he had been an excellent racehorse,” he explains.

“So Schlenderhan decided not to stand him and instead syndicated him with other farms, including Gestüt Brümmerhof, Gestüt Bona and Gestüt Harzburg, which had a majority interest at around 60 per cent and stood him.

“But Harzburg was a very traditional farm in the middle of nowhere in northern Germany, with more National Hunt mares than Flat, and it wasn’t commercial or all that successful, so he didn’t get a lot of support in his early years at stud.

“It’s probably the biggest mistake in the long and glorious history of Schlenderhan, but you have to remember this was around the time that Georg von Ullmann had a lot of problems with the private bank he co-owned having collapsed, so it was hardly a good time to launch a sire. And at least they sold to a German stud, as he could have just as easily ended up standing in Hungary or Turkey.”

Gestüt Harzburg ran into its own difficulties around the middle of the last decade when the Lower Saxony state bank that leased the stud had to exit the business to pay off its loans. Amid the financial chaos Adlerflug, who had spent seven seasons there and was showing significant promise with his early crops, was re-syndicated with a value of €1 million.

A newly formed company led by Baumgarten took on the bank’s shares in the sire, and it was decided that he should return to his birthplace to continue his career. So in 2017 he took up residence in the stallion box at Schlenderhan once inhabited by Monsun.

“I’d seen him race at Hanover, when he won the Derby trial by five lengths, and from that point I’d been convinced he would make a good sire,” says Baumgarten. “I just loved that Schlenderhan line, going back to Anatevka, who has given us not just Galileo and Sea The Stars but the likes of King’s Best and Tertullian too.

“I created the syndicate that bought him and then managed him for all the shareholders, setting the fee, handling nominations and creating advertising and so on. I negotiated with Georg von Ullmann and his stud manager Gebhard Apelt to take the horse back to Schlenderhan, in the breeding heartlands, and I set about generating a little more excitement around him and getting him more mares.”

Stauffenberg Bloodstock

Lot 181

b c Adlerflug - River On The Hills (Sinndar) Haras d’Ombreville

The second foal out of a three-time winner and Listed fourth, who in turn is a Sinndar half-sister to US Grade 3 scorer Istan. The granddam Ronda took the scalps of Balisada and Cape Verdi when she won the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Lot 191 b f Adlerflug - Vintage Rum (Rock Of Gibraltar)

Gestüt Auenquelle

A half-sister to two winners, including this season’s Baden-Baden Derby Trial runner-up Vintage Moon, out of an unraced half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Soldier Hollow.

behind Adlerflug wouldn’t have been needed, considering he’d got major talents like Iquitos, Ito, Savoir Vivre, Swacadelic and Wunder by that point but, alas, breeding in Germany isn’t quite so straightforward.

“It’s tough to convince German breeders,” says Baumgarten. “They’re so conservative, they wait years before deciding to get behind a stallion. Gestüt Karlshof, who have bred so many good horses like Samum and Kamsin, never booked a mare into him, and Gestüt Fahrhof, another leading breeder in Germany, did so only twice.

“Even as recently as 2018 I found it tough to sell nominations to him for as little as €8,000. I worked night and day to find breeders who’d use him. It was after he’d had a quiet season, with only one Group winner, but it’s not as if he didn’t have Listed performers and lots of promising younger horses. The same happened with Monsun in his day. It’s a shame the German industry has to be like that.”

ADLERFLUG’S breakthrough came in 2020, when In Swoop and Torquator

Tasso dominated the Deutsches Derby, In Swoop ran second in the Arc and Alenquer emerged as a useful two-year-old in Britain. Noone was in any doubt whether he was worth using now. Around 100 mares were booked into the sire for the

2021 breeding season at his revised €16,000 fee, including visitors from Britain, Ireland and France, but he got to cover around only a fifth of the entire book before his untimely death at the age of 17.

“It was the craziest day of my life,” recalls Baumgarten of events that April. “It was very emotional for me, and still is now. Breeders finally realised he was a champion, but he decided it was his time to go. We found out in the postmortem that he’d had a small gap in one of the ventricles of his heart since birth, and noone had ever known.

“He was a superstar, up there with the best sires in the world, but he was never allowed to show it fully; he gave only a glimpse of what he could do. He had a similar percentage of Group 1 winners to runners as Galileo or Sea The Stars, so imagine if he had covered the sorts of numbers of mares they did.

“Germany has had only two sires who had the potential to get international Group 1 winners in the last 50 years, and that’s him and Monsun.”

Asked what he thinks was the key to Adlerflug’s outstanding success, Baumgarten says simply: “Pedigree.

“That old Schlenderhan blood is very special, it has produced so many brilliant horses down the years, and it can upgrade ordinary mares. It also allows the potential for inbreeding, as we saw with Torquator Tasso.

“And it isn’t all stamina, either. The big thing with

Adlerflug was that he got stayers with speed, and serious acceleration, which I think helped him be so successful in other countries too.”

Baumgarten is immensely proud of his association with the sire, and is philosophical about his early passing and his frustrating lack of interest from German breeders, but there is another bittersweet edge to this story, as he doesn’t have a mare by him to breed from.

“It’s such a shame,” he says.

“I had a half-sister to Muskoka called Morning Eagle who was going to be my Adlerflug broodmare, and I was very excited by her, but she broke a leg in a training accident last year and couldn’t be saved.

“I don’t own any of the yearlings in his final crop, either, although I have the twoyear-old half-brother to Muskoka who I have named Master Of Light, as he really is a Master Of Light!

“He’s a typical Adlerflug, with white legs and lots of energy, although he maybe has a little more substance than some. He’s in training with Henk Grewe. I don’t know how fast he is, but hopefully we can have some fun with him.

“Perhaps I’ll buy an Adlerflug filly this year, for the future. I’m not sure, we will see.”

Fortunately, four of the halfdozen lots who make up Adlerflug’s last draft at the BBAG Yearling Sale are female, so Baumgarten and other buyers keen to acquire a filly by the best German sire since Monsun have a little choice at least.

3yo b c Tasleet - Russian Punch (Archipenko)

Last year’s Coventry Stakes winner returned with a bang to Royal Ascot in June to win the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, defeating a high-class field that included wondermare Highfield Princess, Australian ace Coolangatta and 2022 Queen Mary winner Dramatised.

A first top-level winner for his sire, Shadwell’s Nunnery Stud resident Tasleet, the Archie Watsontrained colt, who runs for Victorious Racing, had sold for just 12,000gns at the 2021 Somerville Sale, with Harry Dunlop and Highflyer the shrewd buyers.

With entries in the Nunthorpe and Flying Five on the horizon, this likeable colt will be given more opportunities to add to his haul before long.

Anisette

3yo bb f Awtaad - Tutti Frutti (Teofilo)

Derrinstown Stud resident

Awtaad is enjoying a fine season courtesy of a first Group 1 winner in Anmaat, and the Irish 2,000 Guineas hero could well have another this year in the form of easy Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes winner Anisette.

The three-year-old was bred by the Morera Partnership out of the wellrelated, if non-winning, Teofilo mare Tutti Frutti.

Tutti Frutti was a homebred

FORM

of Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud, being out of Listed-winning Zafonic mare Soft Centre, a halfsister to Grade 3 winner and Ribblesdale third Dalvina, Listed winner French Dressing – dam of Hampton Court Stakes winner Mohaafeth –and stakes-placed Pretzel.

That makes Tutti Frutti a half-sister to Nassau Stakes winner Sultanina and to the Listed-placed Coconut Creme.

Tutti Frutti’s daughter was a 26,000gns purchase by Mark McStay’s Avenue Bloodstock in 2021, a couple of hours after Bradsell had gone through the Somerville Sale ring.

Relief Rally

2yo b f Kodiac - Kathoe (Fayruz)

A 58,000gns graduate from last year’s sale, when purchased by Highflyer from Knockatrina House Stud, this filly has already earnt back that sum and plenty more, a large chunk of that thanks to her flying victory in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury.

The Kodiac sister to Chipchase Stakes winner Koropick had been unlucky not to win the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot the time before, losing out in a head-bob with American raider Crimson Advocate. The pair pulled two lengths clear of the highly regarded Beautiful Diamond.

Relief Rally would be well fancied to win the Lowther Stakes at York next week.

A very well-bred daughter of Blue Point from Shadwell’s sensational family of Nashwan, Unfuwain, Lahudood and Aghareed – the dam of Baaeed as well as last month’s epic King George hero Hukum – Barton Stud’s filly seems to tick all the boxes for prospective buyers.

She is out of the Listedplaced Dubawi mare Dubai Fashion, a dual winner for Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin and a daughter of Premio Ribot winner Oriental Fashion, by Marju.

Dubai Fashion is a halfsister to four black-type winners or performers, including City of Auckland Cup winner St Jean and Athasi Stakes second Bulbul.

Under the third dam, the Listed-placed Wijdan – a sister to Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Sarayir – is American Graded winner and Diana Stakes second Makderah, while Hamdan Al Maktoum greats Nayef, Nashwan, Ghanaati and Lahudood all feature in the family history too.

Lot 116

B c Too Darn Hot - Eastern Belle (Champs Elysees) Hascombe and Valiant Stud Anthony Oppenheimer’s world renowned Hascombe and Valiant Stud had catalogued 18 yearling colts at the sales this year, including this Too Darn Hot half-brother to the classy Megallan.

Darley’s champion juvenile

and Sussex Stakes winner

Too Darn Hot hails from a formidable middle-distance family, and his first-crop juveniles were always likely to start flourishing from July onwards.

Chief among them is last weekend’s Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes winner Fallen Angel, while Darnation was a ten-length winner of her second start at Thirsk for Karl Burke – they are just two of their sire’s promising progeny to have appeared, with many more set to grace the track over the coming months.

Megallan, this one’s halfbrother by Kingman, was an impressive winner on his debut at two at Newmarket and second to subsequent Breeders’ Cup scorer Yibir. This colt hails from a deep Oppenheimer family, as Eastern Belle is a Champs Elysees half-sister to Derby and Arc hero Golden Horn. Coronation Stakes winner Rebecca Sharp features under the third dam alongside Cheshire Oaks victress Hidden Hope, dam of Ribblesdale Stakes scorer Frankly Darling and Galtres Stakes winner Our Obsession.

phenomenal Frankel has been given plenty of support by Newsells, who stand him, his owner-breeders the Gunthers and from outside, and is one of the more fascinating firstcrop yearling sires.

Boherguy Stud’s filly is out of the dual winner and Listed-placed performer Maid A Million, a daughter of Kyllachy and the unraced Cape Cross mare Poldhu.

Maid A Million, the dam of two winners to date, is a halfsister to Fred Darling winner and Rockfel Stakes second Dandhu, while Poldhu is a half-sister to Falmouth Stakes winner Rajeem.

Rajeem has been an equally high-class broodmare, producing multiple Groupwinning sprinter and Group 1-placed Invincible Army, now a first-season sire at Yeomanstown Stud, as well as his Invincible Spirit brother, the Listed winner and Groupplaced New York City.

Lot 276

B c Bated Breath - Ronaldsay (Kirkwall) Stowell Hill Stud Ronaldsay has proved as talented a broodmare as she was racehorse in her 24-start career – and her latest progeny to be offered for sale is Stowell Hill Stud’s colt by Bated Breath.

The Kirkwall mare is now 19 and has produced six winners from seven runners, most notably Jersey Stakes winner Gale Force Ten, a tough campaigner for Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore who was also second to stablemate Magician in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and a half-length third in the Middle Park the season before.

The page goes back to Moyglare Stud Stakes winner and European champion juvenile filly Bianca Nera, the granddam of European champion older horse Postponed and Premio Lydia Tesio winner God Given.

Lot 287

B c Tasleet - Serene Spirit (Dark Angel) Barton Stud High-class sprinter turned Nunnery Stud resident Tasleet has managed to come up trumps with King’s Stand and Coventry Stakes winner Bradsell, from relatively small books so far.

With that in mind, it is to be hoped further support is on its way, and his third crop of yearlings could prove popular.

Barton Stud’s colt is well related as his dam is a twiceraced Dark Angel half-sister to One For Bobby, who provided a useful Group-race update when landing the Grand Prix de Vichy in July. With trainer Hughie Morrison eyeing a potential trip to the EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine later this year, who knows, maybe a Grade 1 update could be on the page.

Serene Spirit and One For Bobby are out of the Listedwinning Invincible Spirit mare One Spirit, herself a daughter of Recite, a halfsister to the Sprint Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Diktat, sire of the topclass sprinter and stallion Dream Ahead.

Champion juvenile filly Park Appeal, the dam of Group 1 winner and champion sire Cape Cross, also appears on the page alongside leading stallion Iffraaj.

The biggest names in the FIRST-CROP SIRES business

EARTHLIGHT GH A I Y YATH

Shamardal’s undefeated Champion juvenile. He ran the fastest Middle Park ever – Oasis Dream is a previous record-holder – and is by the sire of top freshman Blue Point.

Horse of the Year, juvenile record breaker and the best by Dubawi. Dominant, relentless front-runner with the panache of his grandsire Dubai Millennium. His best win? Slamming Enable in the Eclipse.

PINAT UBO

Horse of the Year at two with a sire’s pedigree: by Shamardal from the family of Kodiac and Invincible Spirit. Timeform rated him 134 at two – the same as The Tetrarch, rated the best juvenile of the last century.
