MORRA & CASPER TAKE TEXAS OPEN!!!
For several years now, Round Rock, TX has been the Labor Day Weekend destination of choice for pool players near and far. At this year’s Texas Open, hosted by Skinny Bob’s Billiards, players and fans were treated to four different events plus an opening night 9 ball mini-tournament. When the smoke cleared in the mini, it was the father-son duo of Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez who split the cash. Next up was the 9 Ball Ring Game. Thirtytwo players entered the fray with Chip Compton and Edgie Geronimo being the last two standing. They duked it out with Chip taking down the $1140 first place money. Eighteen teams were entered in this year’s Jack n’ Jill Scotch Doubles event. The final match saw James Davis Sr and Jennifer Kraber defeat Jay and Belinda Calhoun 7-2 to take this year’s title and $1820 cash prize. The Women’s Division had a 32 player field. After many matches, Belinda Calhoun and Ricki Casper battled for the hot seat. Neck and neck all the way, Ricki emerged the victor 7-6 and claimed her spot in the finals. Belinda was sent to the west side to await John Morra the victor of the Helen Hayes-Chris Fields match. Leaving Helen in fourth place, Chris survived to play Belinda for the other berth in the finals. This time it was all Chris as she defeated Belinda 7-1 to claim the spot. Advancing to the finals, Ricki defeated Chris 7-5 to pick up $2080 in cash and becoming this year’s Women’s Texas Open Champ! The Open Division had a full 128 player field. The field was whittled down to 32 players when a second auction and redraw were held. Canadian champ John Morra and defending champ Sky Woodward were the finalists for the hot seat match. John led for most of the match until Sky closed it out 9-5 and again, claiming his spot in the finals. John went west to await the outcome of the Manny Chau-Brandon Shuff match. Brandon squeaked out a victory leaving Manny with a very respectable fourth place finish. John, living up to his nickname, Mr. Smooth, played solid pool and defeated Brandon – forcing him to settle for a third place finish. Since the Texas Open is true double elimination, John would have to defeat Sky twice to win the tournament. The first set was all John as he played

nearly perfectly and led 7-0. Finally, Sky slid a bead over to his side and then it was all Sky as the match progressed to 7-4 when the players took a break. The following game was taken by John – putting him on the hill. Sky won the next but scratched on the break, leaving John with a fairly simple runout & forcing a second set. Final score - 9-5. The second set began with each player notching wins until the middle of the match. After a pair of uncharacteristic errors by Sky, John pulled away until he reached the hill 8-5. Needing one game to win the tournament, he made a ball on the break and methodically ran the balls to claim his first Texas Open title and $20,600 cash! Congratulations to John Morra and Ricki Casper for becoming the 2016 Texas Open Champs! Great tournament, Sky & Chris! Proving too much for Herring this day and time, Al-Howri took him out in the first set, 4-0, to win his first-ever, Poison Lone Star Tour amateur title.
Action on the one loss witnessed Massingill defeat Stewart, 4-2, and Al-Howri eliminate Watson, 4-3. Henson made quick work of Massingill, 4-1, but fell to Al-Howri 4-2. Al-Howri went on to eliminate Davis, Sr., 4-3, for a total of 5 straight, match wins to meet Bayaua in the final. Bayaua ended Al-Howri’s winning streak, taking the first and final set, 5-4, earning his second Poison Lone Star Tour tournament win of 2016.

Eaton Posts 2nd Win on Gulf Coast Tour

Gail Eaton came out firing at the Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour Texas Open Warm-Up ladies’ 9-ball event held at Skinny Bob’s Billiards in Round Rock, Texas. Eaton fought her way through a talented field of 29 women, overcoming local favorite Jennifer Kraber in the first and final set, 5-2, to capture her second, consecutive, Gulf Coast Tour tournament title.
Mundie, 4-1, and Kraber took down Vasquez, her fifth victim, 4-1. Back on the east side, Eaton narrowly escaped Casper for the hot seat win, 5-4. Kraber went on to defeat Trinh, 4-1, and Casper, 4-2, which marked an astounding seven, consecutive match wins, to meet Eaton in the final. The former WPBA Pro came out firing against the Austin contender, ending her impressive run in the first set, 5-2.
On August 28th, 2016, Skinny Bob’s Billiards (skinnybobs.com), along with tour sponsors Delta-13 Rack (delta-13.com), APA of North Harris County (facebook. com/apanorthharriscounty), Cyclop Billiard Balls, and host hotel Candlewood Suites in Round Rock (CandlewoodSuites.com) facilitated another successful event for the ladies, who competed for over $1,000 in prize money, in a one-day competition.
In an effort to better accommodate the large number of players competing in the Texas Open Warm Up 9-Ball Event at Skinny Bob’s, beginning in 2017, the Gulf Coast event will be staged at “Skinny Bob’s II”, a smoke-free pool room, adjoining the main room, which houses eight new Diamond bar tables. “This event has presented some challenges over the years, and I’m confident that utilizing this additional space will provide a smoother tournament experience for all of the players,” says Tour Director, Kim Newsome.
It was the sixth stop on this year’s WPBA sanctioned Gulf Coast Tour and the players came out in full force, including hometown talent Tam Trinh, Jennifer WPBA Vice President and 2016 BCA Hall of Fame inductee, Belinda Calhoun, Kraber, Kim Sanders, Veronica “Pistol Perez” Perez, and Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce, attended the event, in advance of participating in the 43rd Annual Texas Open. The along with San Antonio’s Gail Eaton, Lufkin’s Toni Esteves, numerous Houston Gulf Coast Tour would like to congratulate this decorated, professional player on contingents, and the newest and youngest member of the tour, 13-year old Ariana her upcoming Hall of Fame induction, and thank her for close to 30 years of service Lynch of San Antonio. In Memory Of ....
Tom Simpson 1951 - 2016 by: Mark Finkelstein One Saturday morning about a month ago I got a call from Candace Coffin, Tom Simpson’s wife, telling me that Tom had died the night before. He was on the way to the hospital and had a heart attack. His passing was sudden and a shock to me. That is the last thing I could ever imagine. I have been working with Tom for about 10 years and have done close to 100 seminars with him over the years. During that time I have come to understand the passion and love for the game that Tom exuded. Tom was a true pioneer and role model for players and instructors alike. Tom encouraged me to write about pool and was instrumental in exposing me to the bigger pool world. Tom had that quiet ability to motivate me to always be looking for ways to do better. I only know pieces about Tom’s life before he became a full time Instructor, but I have been with him enough years doing the Intensive seminars to understand the great passion and dedication he had to helping pool players improve and bringing more qualified instructors into the industry. Tom had an exceptional ability to look at a player’s stance and figure out a more efficient way for the player to stand. He was also a marketing genius! Puns, turns of phrases, and article titles delighted me over the years. Just look at the chapters of his book “Beat People with a Stick” to get chuckle after chuckle over his use of words. I am also honored to be considered a friend of Tom’s. He was a loyal, dedicated and exceptional man that I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from over the years.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
3 Useful Solutions (1 of 3) We are playing a game of 8-Ball and we are down to the last ball, the black 8. The side pocket is blocked by one opponent’s ball and we can’t bank the 8 because of the opponent’s Green Ball. If the Green Ball is placed in a spot which makes it possible for us to have our Cue Ball carom off the 8-Ball and swipe the Green Ball away, then try to use this simple solution: Aim the 8-Ball 3/4 to the right using a 2-tip left English at 9 o’clock on the Cue Ball and a 3-speed stroke. The 8-Ball will pick up the opposite English and start zigzagging, while the Cue Ball pushes itself and the Green Ball out of the 8-Ball’s path. Finally the 8-Ball, after hitting three rails will sink in the opposite side pocket. 3 Useful Solutions (2 of 3)
In this diagram instead, the Green Ball is placed where we can’t remove it with our Cue Ball. Try to hit the 8-Ball almost full, just a hair to the left, using a very smooth follow through and a 6 o’clock, 2.5 tips of draw and a 2-speed stroke on the Cue Ball. The Cue Ball will draw back pretty much in a straight line and the 8-Ball, after bouncing off the long rail, will likely collide with the Cue Ball approximately at point X on the table and its trajectory, with a little luck, will be diverted towards the side pocket. A not-too-easy time shot.

3 Useful Solutions (3 of 3) This last solution is definitely the fanciest and most effective as the position of the blocking Green Ball does not matter much. We want to have the 8-Ball jump over the blocking ball. In order to do so, elevate your cue about 25⁰ and hit the Cue Ball half a tip above center. Use a 2-speed stroke and a little wrist action. Aim the 8-Ball as if you were banking it into the side pocket. Keep in mind that if the CB and the 8-Ball are closer than the ideal 8”-12”, you will need to elevate your cue a little more and hit the CB a tad higher. According to the position of the blocking ball, with some practice we can even try to make the 8-Ball “on the fly”!

The other day at the pool hall I noticed a young player practicing kick shots. He was shooting like it was a game of 9 ball, but every shot was a kick. He seemed to be having fun and I’m sure he was learning how to use the cushions. Here is my take on how to do this practice and even play it as a game, which I’ll call Kick It. Here are the rules for the two-person game: Rack for 9 ball and do a normal break to get the game started. If you make a ball, spot it back up and continue shooting. On each subsequent shot, you must contact a cushion before you hit the lowest object ball -- hitting the lowest ball directly is a foul as is any usual foul at nine ball like not getting a cushion after ball contact. If you make a good hit and don’t foul, you get to shoot again. If you make a ball as part of a good kick, you get one point and the ball stays down. If you make a ball on a foul, it spots back up. If you foul, your opponent begins with ball in hand anywhere, but of course he has to shoot a kick shot. You can either play for cumulative points over several racks (maybe first to 20) or first to five points wins the rack. In the diagram is a typical situation right after the break. This is a fairly easy shot in that the 1 ball is directly along the path for kicking the cue ball to the side pocket A, which most players are familiar with. Shown in the diagram are some details from the standard mirror system of aiming kick shots. The black ball is the mirrored target for the 1 ball. In theory, if you shoot straight at the black target, you will hit the one ball full. The target is even with the 1 ball (north/south) and as far from the rail groove as the 1 ball is. (The rail groove is the worn line you can see on old cloth that is half a ball from the nose of the cushion.) This mirror system is used by some pros and I’ve seen them measuring out the target using theshaft of their cue stick as a ruler. The system is useful enough that I think it merits its own practice session. Make a circular ball-sized target out of paper to put on the cushion and mark the cue ball and object ball positions, and see how well the shot works for you with various speeds. The most common problem is putting unintended side spin on the cue ball which can ruin the mirror reflection. Also, faster shots will tend to go more perpendicular off the cushion (called “shorter”). Of course if the 1 ball was a little up or down the table, you would need to aim not to hit it full but to cut it a little. For example, if you’re kicking the 5 ball to pocket G, you need to hit somewhat towards the bottom of the ball as a full hit off the right side cushion will send it into the bottom rail. One of the easiest shots in this game, and a shot that is very useful otherwise, is the short kick to the 2 ball from the cue ball position shown -- hit the cushion near B to pocket the C. It turns out that the normal mirror system usually doesn’t work well for this shot because the cue ball tends to bend back towards the cushion a little when shot softly. If you made a target for the 1 ball shot, you can also use it here -- experiment to find out where it needs to be for a soft shot at the 2 ball.

As you get better at this game you will start to see position possibilities because you get to play again after a good kick. For a shot like the 3 ball from the cue ball position shown, you can do something like a short kick off of D to move the 3 ball down to E. The cue ball will still be near the 6 ball so you will have a kick off the cushion at F to make the 3 in pocket G. Or at least that’s the plan. When you make the initial short kick, you have to be careful to get a cushion. The easiest way to do that without sending the 3 ball farther than you want is to get the cue ball back to the side cushion by hitting the 3 slightly on the rail side. DEVELOPING A POWERFUL PRE-SHOT ROUTINE
Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.
Next time you’re at a pro tournament, be sure to check out what top players do before each shot. A good pre-shot routine is an essential part of the game. It enables us to put ourselves into “Dead Stroke” on demand and focus all of our energy into the present moment. This month we will look at many steps you may want to incorporate into your pre-shot routine. 1. Free your Mind from Negative Thoughts or Expectations: Before you get down to shoot, you should exhibit a positive attitude. You’ll be free of negativity by not thinking about the score, how you are playing, how well your opponent is playing, or the soundness of your stroke mechanics. 2. Make Quality Decisions: Take your time and make sure that you pick out the right shot. Always think at least three balls ahead. You will also need to determine the correct amount of speed and spin needed to execute the shot properly. Remember to make all of your conscious decisions from a standing position with chalk in hand. 3. Align: This is the fundamental that requires the most maintenance and you need to make sure you’re perfectly aligned to the shot at hand. You should aim from a standing position then lock your eyes in on the contact point of the object ball as you settle into your stance and sweep your cue onto the shot line. 4. Practice Strokes: Next, take several slow warm-up strokes to ensure everything is correct. This is your second aiming checkpoint to ensure accuracy. If anything does not look right at any time, you should get up and start the entire process again. 5. Set: The first part of your “Stroke” is called “Set” and is

your third aiming checkpoint. This is where you stop your cue tip around 1/8 of an inch away from the cue ball and take one final look. You should note that it takes the human eye two to three seconds to focus on a target from a still position. Therefore, it is imperative that you come to a COMPLETE STOP to zero in on your target. You will want to note that your eyes will move back and forth, but should be focusing on the cue ball at the end of the “Set” position. During practice, you should remain completely still and say, “1…2…3…” 6. Pause: The next thing you should do is move into what many instructors refer to as “Pause.” This is where you will slowly pull back your cue and stop at the end of your backswing. When making the transition from “Set” to “Pause,” your eyes should move from the cue ball to the point of contact on the object ball. A good pause helps remove a jerky forward swing and should help you maintain accuracy. As you practice the “Pause,” you will want to pull your cue back and say “1…2...” (second stop). 7. Finish: The third part the process is commonly referred to as “Finish.” During “Finish,” you should smoothly accelerate your cue and follow through the cue ball. Always remember to keep your eyes on the object ball during this phase. 8. Freeze: The fourth and final part of the stroke is called “Freeze.” During “Freeze,” it’s important to keep your body, head, and cue still. This is the evaluative part of the process. It is here that if the shot is missed, you should try to diagnose what went wrong. As you practice “Freeze,” you should remain completely still and say “1…2…3…4…” Furthermore, most good instructors teach players that their timing in an actual game will be roughly half of the duration of what it was during practice. In other words, during a real game, your “Set” will last around 1.5 seconds, your “Pause” will be around 1 second, and your “Freeze” will last approximately two seconds. Personally, I like to emphasize “Set,” and I don’t teach my students to cut it in half. I want their eyes to have plenty of time to focus on the target. You should continually work to improve your ability to focus specifically on each step. Once you master the process, you will develop a much stronger mental game. In the words of the late Larry Liscotti, “You will make more money and less friends.”

By Mary Kenniston Legends Billiards of League City, TX was the destination. 138 players in two divisions competed on the nine footers to see who would be this year’s Houston 9-Ball Open champions. Thirty women entered the Ladies Division JEREMY JONES trying for a piece of the $1,900 purse plus $1,460 in Calcutta action. Playing down to the semi-final match were wellknown Texas players Jennifer Kraber and Amanda Lampert. Jennifer won the match 5-2 and Amanda went west to await the results of the Natalie Rocha-Kim Pierce match. Natalie defeated Kim leaving her in fourth place with $190 in prize money plus another $145 in Calcutta cash. Natalie was unstoppable as she defeated Amanda to move into the finals. Amanda received $285 in prize money and $220 in Calcutta cash for third place. Natalie was on a tear but Jennifer was having none of it as she defeated her 7-4. Natalie cashed $385 prize money plus $365 Calcutta for her second place finish. As the 2016 Houston Open champ, Jennifer received $570 plus $510 from the Calcutta for her efforts. The Open Division drew 108 players fighting for a piece of the $16,630 purse plus another $13,690 from the player auction. When the music stopped, it was last year’s Houston Open champ Jeremy Jones and Cesar Garcia Jr in the hot seat. Looking to repeat, JJ made quick work of Cesar 7-2. Meanwhile, Kevin Cheng and former Houston Open champ, Charlie Bryant, were duking it out. Hillbilly prevailed 7-4 and moved on to play Cesar for the other berth in the finals. Taking fourth place, Kevin received $1,170 in prize money plus $1,230 Calcutta. After defeating Cesar and leaving him in third place, Charlie moved on to the finals. New Town, ND was ground zero for pool this week as players converged on the Four Bears Casino and Lodge for their 25th Annual Eight Ball Classic. This popular event was kicked off with a $2000 added Men’s and a $500 added Women’s 9 Ball Mini-Tournament. Eighty men and seventeen women put up their entries to try for their piece of the cash. A total of $6000 was up for grabs as Dennis Orcollo claimed $1600 for first place, Oscar Dominguez received $1100 for second and Jamie Pluta got $800 for third place. Melissa Little claimed first and $600, Toni Sakamoto got $400 for second and Caela Henley-Huddleston took home $200 for third place. The women’s division of the Eight Ball Classic started with 50 players. When the smoke cleared, it was Caela Henley-Huddleston and Nicole Keeney fighting it out for the hot seat. Nicole prevailed

and sent Caela west to await the results of the Jessica Moxon Toni Sakamoto match. Jessica took down Toni leaving her in fourth place with a $900 payout. Nicole Keeney is no stranger to final match action and she defeated Jessica for the title and the first place prize money of $3500 plus a Calcutta payout of $1825. Jessica received $2000 in prize money and $1095 Calcutta cash for her runner-up finish. The Men’s 8 Ball Classic started with a star-studded field of 163 players. By this evening, the field had been whittled down to four superstars. Shane Van Boening defeated John Morra, leaving him in fourth place and a $2800 payday plus $3924 from the Calcutta. Shane found Sky Woodward waiting for him after a defeat in the hot seat match against Roberto Gomez. Sky was a man on a mission as he defeated the always tough SVB leaving him with a third place consolation prize of $3300 plus $7412 Calcutta money.

$1.2 MILLION+ AWARDED AT LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (Sept. 9, 2016) — The American Poolplayers Association (APA) sure knows how to throw a party. And the party was in full effect in early August for the recently rebranded APA World Pool Championships. Record attendance? Check. The most recognizable stars in the sport of pool? Check. Live streaming of all five event finals? Check. Epic pool party? Check – times two! Throw in more than $1.2 million in cash, front row viewing of an iconic casino implosion and 10 days of non-stop pool playing action, and it all adds up to a party unlike any other. For thousands of die-hard APA members, it was paradise. For APA’s staff and officials, it was business as usual, helping to make memories of a lifetime for their members. This year’s version of the world’s largest pool tournament saw more than 12,000 players from 48 states and three countries competing on nearly 320 tables. APA members rubbed elbows with billiard celebrities like “The Black Widow” Jeanette Lee, “The Striking Viking” Ewa Laurance, Florian “Venom” Kohler, “Dr. Cue” Tom Rossman and instructor Lee Brett. In the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 16, many of those in attendance took in the opportunity to see the Riviera Hotel & Casino come tumbling down in a rare Vegas implosion. After 23 years of hosting APA tournaments at the now extinct “Riv,” the timing couldn’t have been more appropriate. In the end though it was pool tournament action they came for, and it was pool tournament action they received.

After winning their divisions in weekly APA 8-Ball and 9-Ball League play and then placing in Local Team Championships throughout the United States, Canada and Japan, teams consisting of five to eight players, qualified to compete in the 2016 APA World Championships. In the 716-team 8-Ball World Championship, Believe the Hype of Evansville, Ind., defeated Make It Work of Harahan, La., to take home $25,000 in cash and the championship title. As Runners-Up, Make It Work received $15,000 in prize money. Teams in the 8-Ball Championship squared-off in a modified singleelimination format that ensured each team played at least twice before elimination. All 8-Ball Division teams automatically received $350 in national qualifier money, and the top 8 teams won at least $5,000. The 8-Ball Division began play on Aug. 15 and concluded on Aug. 20. In the 476-team 9-Ball World Championship, it was Big Tyme Misfits of Spring, Texas, defeating Bruce Monnier of Port Charlotte, Fla., in the finals. Big Tyme Misfits took home $15,000 in 1st Place prize money. As Runners-Up, Bruce Monnier received $7,000 in cash. The 9-Ball Championship was held Aug. 11-15, with teams competing in a modified single-elimination format that ensured each team played at least twice before elimination. All national qualifiers received a minimum of $350, with the top 8 teams winning at least $2,000. In the Jack & Jill Doubles Championship, it was Smokin’ Ace of Kansas City, Mo., winning $3,500 in the finals with a victory over Plan B of Whitby, Ont. In the finals of the Ladies 8-Ball Championship, it was KQ 2.0 of Stratford, Conn., defeating Miss Qs 607 of Oak Forest, Ill., to win $10,000 in 1st Place prize money. As Runners-Up, Miss Qs 607 received $5,000 in cash. In addition, the APA conducted nearly round-the-clock MiniMania tournaments, which took place daily and were open to all APA members. The MiniMania tournaments offered multiple formats with 100% prize money payback that awarded nearly $260,000. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, with leagues throughout the United States, Canada and Japan. JOSH ROBERTS, ALEX PAGULAYAN By Mary Kenniston This weekend, bar box players from all over headed to Dave Cole’s Carom Room in Beloit, WI for the Fall Classic Ten Ball Championship. In addition to the main event, there was also a sixteen player $500 entry mini tournament plus Calcutta. The last two players standing were Larry Nevel and Johnathan Pinegar. Larry defeated Hennessee in the final match 7-1 to take $5,200 first prize money plus $3,000 from the Calcutta. Hennessee received $2,800 for his efforts plus another $1,650 in Calcutta cash. The main event drew 96 players vying for a total purse of $22,900 plus another $45,010 from the player auction. After playing all weekend, the field was whittled down to four players. Hot seat action featured veteran Alex Pagulayan & young gun Sky Woodward. It was a close match but Alex sent Sky packing with a score of 9-7. Sky cooled his heels waiting for the result of the Josh RobertsRoberto Gomez match. Losing 9-6, Roberto had to settle for fourth with $1,750 in prize money plus $3,950 in Calcutta cash to ease his pain. Josh & Sky teed it up and it looked like Sky was heading back to the finals. However, Josh was having
none of it as he made a huge comeback to defeat Sky 9-7. Hopefully, $2,850 in prize money plus $6,330 calcutta cash made third place finisher Sky feel a little better. The finals was all Alex as he put on a clinic to defeat Josh 9-2. Josh cashed $4,600 in prize money plus an additional $10,250 for a great runner-up finish. The newly minted Carom Room 10 Ball champ, Alex, received $7,500 in prize money plus a whopping $16,600 in Calcutta cash. Pretty sweet for a weekend’s work!!! Congratulations to all!!! Allison Fisher 6 Time Winner!
“I am finally back,” said an excited Allison Fisher moments after capturing her sixth International Tournament of Champions title. Allison now leads Ga Young Kim who holds five Tournament of Champion titles. The thrill of victory was all the greater since it had been several years since she won her last Tournament of Champion title. The spirited $15,000 winner-take-all event was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, September 21. Fisher, the 2016 Masters Champion, defeated Kelly Fisher in the final match and was crowned the new Woman’s “Champion of Champions.” The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped for broadcast by ESPN beginning Sunday, December 11 at 1:00 pm EST on ESPN2. “We may look cool out there, but the pressure is overwhelming,” said Allison. “I knew I had to play well from the start being matched first against Ga Young, and then to meet Kelly in the finals I couldn’t let up.” Kelly Fisher started out strong in both sets of the Final with a 2-0 lead, only to see Allison come back in each set and win 4-2, 4-2 for the Championship trophy and the winner’s take all check. The 2016 event was the 19th Annual International Tournament of Champions. Bill Talerico, Executive Vice President of Sports & Entertainment for Trump Taj Mahal, was delighted with the play and the crowd of pool fans. “We were extremely pleased with this event,” he said. “This is the last event to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal, and it was first class all the way. I wish we could hold this event next year. It was great for Atlantic City.”

25th Int’l Challenge of Champions “I watched this Tournament as a young boy and to now win it is amazing” said an elated Jayson Shaw moments after capturing the 2016 International Challenge of Champions title. The pressure packed $25,000 winner-take-all event was held at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 20. Shaw, from Scotland, defeated Shane van Boening of the United States in “sudden death” in the final match and was crowned the new “Champion of Champions.” The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped by ESPN for telecast beginning Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 EST “You have to play your best the entire tournament,” said Shaw “There’s no margin for error. I won the lag to break in Sudden Death and I knew if I missed one shot I would lose $25,000! That is pressure.” Shaw played Kevin Cheng of Taiwan in the first Semifinal match. Cheng was off his game and Shaw played flawlessly winning both races to 5 handily 5-0 and 5-3. In the Finals, battling back and forth Shaw won the first set 5-4 and Van Boening took the second set 5-1. The momentum appeared to be with van Boening, but in the one game sudden death Shaw won the lag, ran the table, and emerged the winner. The crowd gave Shaw a standing ovation when he won the final match. He raised his arms in victory and then accepted the highest single purse in international winner-takeall tournaments. The trophy and the check were presented by Gregg Hovey of Billiards International. The 2016 event was the 25th annual International Challenge of Champions and the very last event to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, set to close on October 10, 2016.
