BOB OGBURN ROARS
THROUGH SUPER SENIORS ONE POCKET!!! Article by Mary Kenniston
Bob Ogburn Seventeen players arrived at Bogie’s Billiards & Sports Bar in Houston, TX October 28-30, 2016 from all over the country – and all over 70 years of age – to compete in the 2nd Annual Super Seniors One Pocket Championship. Returning players included defending champ, John Henderson, Seniors One Pocket champ Billy Incardona, and last year’s finalist and Houston favorite, James Christopher. They were in addition to “LS John” Nevin, Jeff Sparks, John Rizzo, Maurice LeBlanc, “Fast Eddie” Friedman, Reggie Barksdale, Casey Killian. They were joined by newcomers Phil Martin, Bob McFarren, Don Steele, Bob Valliere, “Big Bob” Ogburn, “Toupee Jay” Helfert and last year’s third place finisher, John Smith. The players meeting, player auction and draw were done Thursday evening and play started at 11 am on Friday. Everyone drew byes with the exception of two unlucky players – Reggie Barksdale and Jeff Sparks. The premier match of the day was between James Christopher and Billy Incardona. It came down to the case game – case ball with Billy taking the win 4-3. Another well-played match was between John Henderson and Pennsylvania’s Don Steele – 81 years young! Don played lights out – his shot execution was topnotch. It was hard to believe this veteran player

just started playing one pocket a year and a half ago! He gave his opponent all he could handle but John managed to eke out a 4-3 win. At the end of the first day, the field had been whittled down to twelve – four on the winner’s side and eight on the loser’s. Saturday’s matches again began at 11 am. Billy Incardona was like a hot knife through butter as he defeated Bob Ogburn 4-0 – in less than an hour! John Henderson’s match-up with John Smith was a lot closer than the score indicated even though John also won 4-0. West side action saw Steele defeat Sparks 3-1 leaving him in 7-8th place while James Christopher defeated LS Bob with Billy Incardona John 3-2 after being down 2-0. Next round saw Ogburn defeatSteele 3-1 while Christopher defeated Smith 3-0. When the smoke cleared on Saturday night, they were down to four players – Billy Incardona and John Henderson were undefeated with James Christopher and Bob Ogburn on the one-loss side. These four players were the pre-tournament favorites and they didn’t disappoint. It would be a tough final day. The remaining players returned at noon with James and Bob starting the day. The match was neck and neck but Bob prevailed 3-2 – leaving a disappointed James in fourth place. John was itching for a rematch with Billy but Bob was having none of it as he was wanting a rematch of his own after being shellacked by Billy the previous day. Bob took John down 4-0 leaving the defending champ having to settle for a very respectable third place finish. After a short break while everyone jockeyed for seats, the final match began. It was everything all of us had hoped for – an exceptional display of their knowledge and moves of the game in addition to their precision cue ball control and shot-making abilities. Their excellent play left no doubt that these two veterans could still dab it and made those of us who didn’t see these two in their primes sure wish we had. Bob took the first set 4-3 requiring a second set. As both players had a loss now, the second set was
OnTheBreakNews.com
to be first to three games but by mutual agreement, it was shortened to two. The second set was short as Bob won the first two games and the title. Congratulations to Black Bart for becoming the 2016 Super Seniors One Pocket Champion! Wellplayed, sir! It was a real treat to watch you play! I know Billy was disappointed to come so close – especially after a bad back kept him from possibly winning last year. He sure played great! Good tournament, my friend! And thank you to all who competed in this event! It wouldn’t be the success it is without you! You guys are the best! Bill (“Kentucky”) Meyers’ California Streaming did a great job of allowing those who couldn’t make it to watch the action. Zach (“Goldy”) Goldsmith gave us sound and the opportunity for some excellent commentary. They even let down their guard and let me sit in for a while to tell some lies! These senior one pocket events wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation of Jeff Sparks, Bogie’s owner David Richardson, Manager John Rizzo and Tournament Director Bill Fuller and, of course, the staff. Everyone of these people took such good care of the players and us fans – from feeding us on Saturday afternoon to John keeping the jukebox humming with “our” kind of music – classic country and classic rock! Doesn’t get much better than this! This is my third trip to Houston to see my boys and all my old and new friends – cuemaker Leonard & Suzanne Bludworth, Linda Martin, Samm Christopher, Disco Dave, Robert Newkirk, Bille Miller, Earl Higgins…I know I forgot some people but you know who you are! And a huge thanks to my old friend and “Sis,” Ming Ng and her man, Brent Thomas for having me at their beautiful home. I wouldn’t be able to come if it weren’t for them! I took some pictures and most of them came out terrible. That’s my next mission: learn how to take a decent photo with my new smart phone! LOL Photos can be seen in my album ‘16 Super Seniors One Pocket Championship - Houston, TX.

The 2016 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship took place October 21st – 23rd in Oklahoma City at the upscale billiard room Jamaica Joe’s. This prestigious event showcased top professionals and online viral video sensations like Florian “Venom” Kohler from France (now residing in Las Vegas), world famous “trick shot” artist Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey, and William “The Gentleman” DeYonker, ESPN competitor and magnetic Artistic Pool playing artist, along with numerous other WPA worldranked players. The Artistic Pool competition kicked off on the first day in grand fashion. In the evening a very entertaining speed pool competition was held with local players as well as artistic pro players participating. This latter challenge was done as a charity event for 10 Strong (mothers with children with cancer in Oklahoma City) and raised over $1100. William DeYonker did an outstanding job during the Artistic Pool competition with an all-time record-breaking preliminary score of 296 points out of 320 possible. Florian Kohler beat the old record as well with 280 points. The playoff rounds presented the top eight scoring players from the preliminary rounds in a head-to-head

match play format. Semi-final results revealed William over Jason “The Michigan Kid” Lynch (61-44) and Abram “Too Tall” Diaz over Florian (54-47). William achieved first place honors by defeating Abram (69-40) in the finals. Abram finished second, Florian third, and Jason fourth. The Sportsmanship Recipient Award was presented to Iana “Venomette” Kohler by a vote of the players, and Andrew “The Enigma” Sozio won the Rising Star Recipient Award. William DeYonker won 3 disciplines – Trick/Fancy, Stroke, and Masse; Jamie “The Bayou Bullet” Moody won 2 disciplines – Special Arts and Follow; Florian Kohler won 2 disciplines – Draw and Jump; Mark “Dr. Popper” Dimick won the Bank/Kick discipline! The WPA Artistic Pool Division (WPA APD) would like to thank Delta racks for donating one of their high quality racks for the speed pool champion and McDermott Cues for their donation of a beautiful cue and case, which was raffled off. In addition, a special thanks to the major sponsors: Jamaica Joe’s; the WPPA; and the WPA for their official World event sanctioning / recognition for Artistic Pool (15th WC) and a provision by them of Olympic-style medals for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place finishers. On Saturday evening the “artistic” players gave an entertaining show to all in attendance with some of their favorite shots and an awesome concluding pool table skit by consummate “trick shot” inventor and performer Rick “The Barber” Hawkinson. The WPA APD would like to remind the players and fans of our sport that we will be holding the next WPA World Artistic Pool Championship in China in January 2017. If anyone wants to play in that event or knows someone that is interested in competing, please contact WPA APD president Mark Dimick at dimickmark@aol.com. The WPA APD would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Jamaica Joe’s, Jessica Finch Massey, and KC Massey, for their valued support of Artistic Pool with another great event.

Pool players frequently mention that magical state - “The Zone” - when they refer to a great performance at the table. “He was deep in The Zone, man.” “He was unconscious.” “It was just him and the balls.” We all talk about it as if we know what it is, but when we try to explain it to someone, we run out of words pretty quickly. We’re not going to nail it down fully here, but we’ll characterize it and try to identify possible triggers to help us get there. One of the problems in describing The Zone is the idea that it’s purely a “mental thing.” I say not quite. It’s a mindbody state. One of the primary characteristics of being in The Zone is that it is a time when mind & body are integrated and are performing together without conflict, i.e., in harmony. “Getting it together.” This is an ideal state for playing pool. We want our brains and our bodies both to contribute their best performances. Meanwhile, we also want to keep emotion, doubt, and distraction out of our game. Some players feel Focused Concentration is the key, the trigger that launches them into The Zone. Well, how do you “do” Focused Concentration? If you’re “doing” it, and you realize it, you’ve broken your concentration - you’re not there any more. I’d say concentration is both a symptom and a cause. It’s like smiling and feeling good. If you feel good, you smile. If you smile, you feel good. In that sense, if you can somehow focus and concentrate fully, you may fall into The Zone. By the same token, if you’re in The Zone, you’ll find you are fully focused and concentrated. People say pool is a mental game. So what about thinking? Well, yes, we have thoughts in The Zone, but they are not the “monkey chatter” thoughts that typically run through our heads all day long. They are not about worry, failure, what’s going on outside of the table space, and so on. They are not self-conscious or introspective, but rather they are much closer to pure “joyous function,” by which I mean it’s just you and the balls, and they are pretty much already in the pockets, but you’re not patting yourself on the back about it. Your success is due both to doing the right things well and to not interfering with that. Our culture is very goal-oriented, but zoning is a process thing. Teaching martial arts students to take smooth, safe falls, we talk about how a coin rolls along at its perfect speed, each part of the edge making full contact with the ground. No rush, no getting ahead of itself.
Rack’em
OnTheBreakNews.com
Playing pool in the zone, there is no hurry. Even though you might know the rack is gone, the joyous function, the reason we do this, is to fully live each moment of every shot. The one-ball is as beautiful as the nine-ball. Feeling the cloth slide against your fingertips as you set up is as excruciatingly fine as the roll of a ball. You can’t readily will yourself into The Zone. I try to remember my triggers. Just like having a pre-shot routine, you can have a pre-zone routine that might help you get there. You still have to remember to do it, and get out of the way so it can happen. It’s more of a “giving up” than a “making it happen.” Musicians talk about “sinking into the instrument.” This is the experience we’re seeking. When we merge with our instrument - the cue - we’re in The Zone. Contradictory concepts like “soft focus” and “relaxed concentration” make sense in The Zone, whereas in our everyday state, these ideas seem paradoxical. Try softening your eyes and allowing the balls or the pockets to become bigger. Concentrate without clenching anything up. Find anything about your body or your mental state that seems for you to be a symptom of being in The Zone. Your personal Pre-Zone Routine should feature that symptom. Maybe it’s one of the things mentioned above. Maybe it’s a quality of your breathing. Maybe it’s a certain rhythm of movement. Maybe it’s how your eyes feel. Find something and use it to get you to The Zone. Unfortunately for most of us, we can’t make it last. It’s a few seconds to a few minutes at a time. Maybe we can stay in the “region” for a longer time, though, and get back in on some shots or innings. If everything clicks, it might go a little longer, but awareness of time is another one of those things that knocks you out of The Zone. Jack Nicklaus is in The Zone as he approaches, sets up, and executes his shot, but he’s probably only in the region as he walks to the next shot. Become aware that you’re in The Zone and it’s over. Congratulate yourself on what you just did, and you’re out. You can’t maintain it. As you develop the skills and experience to a) play well enough to get into The Zone and b) trust it and let it be, you’ll tend to get more Zone-time. The present moment is all there is. Dwell upon a past shot or worry about a future shot and you’re out. As Obiwan Mosconi would say (if there were such a person), “Present shot, only shot.”

A FANCY FORCE-FOLLOW STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
This dated trick shot belongs to the category I prefer: the useful trick shots. It came in handy during quite a few games of 9- and 10-ball where I had a ball hanging by a pocket and the lowest numbered ball close to a rail. It made it so easy to pocket the hanging ball that it gave me very good odds to keep shooting. As shown, the 2-ball is in the middle of the short rail and frozen to it. We can’t cut it in the corner because an opponent’s ball is blocking that pocket. But if we have the right approach angle which is quite wide and marked by the two green solid lines, we can try to hit the 2-ball full using a lot of top spin on the Cue Ball. We can either use a 12 o’clock and 2 tips of English or an 11:30 and even a 12:30 hit, depending on the table. The second solution will work better if the table plays short. The stroke will need to be a speed 3.5 - 4. The CB will hug the rail, after hitting the 2-ball and pocket the 6-ball in the corner, while the 2 ball gets either repositioned in zone “1” or it may even end up in the same corner pocket after travelling 4 rails. If you want to show off this shot to your friends, you will need to pocket both balls at once. Thus, pick a 12 o’clock hit on the CB and change only one variable: the CB position. If the 2-ball comes long, move the CB a little to the left; vice versa if the 2-ball comes short.

MUM’S THE WORD

December 2016
Recently in an on-line discussion someone asked for a game that could be played on fairly equal terms between players of very different skill levels. There were some suggestions of short races and huge spots but those don’t really solve the problem. One game that gives C players a pretty good chance to beat the pros is Mum Pool. It’s an interesting novelty game that should be good for some laughs if everyone takes it in the right spirit. I first heard of Mum Pool fifty years ago at the Student Union where I learned to play. The rules were published in 1961 in a newsletter for pool room proprietors called “Chalk Up!” that was produced by the A.E. Schmidt Company of St. Louis. It was the first in a series of off-beat games intended to promote more play. We had a lot of fun with it. Here are the rules: Mum Pool is a game for several players -- four or more is good. Draw for shooting order. Each player takes only one shot when it is his turn. The rules: 1. Rack any nine balls in a diamond shape -- the numbers make no difference during the game. 2. A player who commits any foul or violates any of the following special rules is out of the game. The goal is to be the last player left. 3. The breaker prior to breaking must tap the table with his cue and say “Mum.” After that all of the following rules apply to all players left in the game. 4. The shooter is subject to all ball fouls, just as if you were playing eight or nine ball, but no particular ball has to be hit first. Touching an object ball is a foul, as are the usual: scratching, ball onto the floor, no cushion after contact, etc. The following are special fouls that come into force starting with the break: 5. Breaking without saying “Mum.” 6. Chalking. 7. Talking -- this includes grunting and groaning. 8. Resting the cue on the floor. 9. Sitting down. 10. Interfering with the shooter. 11. Using the mechanical bridge. 12. Shooting out of turn or taking more than one shot on your turn. 13. Shooting with either foot off the floor -- both must be on the floor. 14. Pocketing the last object ball on the table. (If the last ball is pocketed, it spots on the foot spot or the head spot if blocked.) There are several new skills that you will need. Simple sign language is useful -- He’s out! -- but everyone pointing at the person who just forgot not to chalk will probably be clear enough. We all quickly learned to rest our cues on the tops of our feet. The no bridge rule combined with both feet on the floor makes the upper shot in the diagram an effective safety -you may want to learn a little one-handed
Rack’em

technique. The lower shot is also a big problem for the shooter if that is the last object ball sitting in the pocket. If you sink the ball, you’re out, but you also have to get a hit and a cushion. Learn to shoot softer than you ever have before. When we played, the eliminated players would try to encourage fouls by the players still in the game, such as by talking or chalking. The original rules specified that you played until the first player was eliminated so there was only one loser. If that’s how you play, I guess he could buy the next round. We played that the single winner got the pot. Good luck and may the quietest player win. (Five years of the newsletter mentioned above was published as a booklet. It is available on the used book market: “The First 5 Years of Chalk Up!”. It includes a bunch of other games and promotions.)

SIMPLICITY: THE ULTIMATE SOPHISTICATION Applying the correct fundamentals is a critical part of any pool player’s game. However, learning effective strategy is just as important to maintain a high-level of consistency. The primary reason professional players are more successful than intermediate players is because they are much more efficient at managing the game. Simply put, pro players are much better at capitalizing on the weakness areas of their opponents.
Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.
One strategy pros use is called “knitting.” You might be asking yourself “What is knitting?” and “How can it help me play a better game of pool?” The term “knitting” should not be confused with the billiards term “nit,” which is a player or gambler who refuses to bet or wager on a relatively evenly matched game. “Knitting” on the other hand, is doing something simple during a complex game situation. The first thing a player should do is start with then end in mind and try to figure out what their opponent will like the least. Players need to understand that usually this will involve shooting a shot that is fairly simple to execute. Remember to never look for something difficult to do during a high-pressure situation. Many times, shooting the most difficult shot will get you beat. When weighing your options, try to think about the best place to leave your opponent. In 9-ball, many times it will become impossible to snooker your opponent from the contacting the lowest numbered ball on the table. One thing to think about is leaving plenty of green between cue ball and object ball. Another powerful tool is leaving the object ball sitting near either of the two end rails. You might ask, “Why is the end cushion a problem?” The answer lies with the fact that balls positioned in this location are often difficult to pocket. Several years ago I was playing in the finals of the Billiard Café 9-Ball Championship in Lancaster, Kentucky. I was left with a difficult off angle bank shot. However, instead of shooting the difficult shot I decided to play a simple safety (as shown in Figure 1). The safety won the tournament. It was the best shot, because I could execute it a higher percentage of the time. The key to executing the shot is to strike about 1/8 of the right side of the object ball with lots
OnTheBreakNews.com
of right spin. You will want to practice the shot until you become proficient at leaving the object ball on the middle of the end rail. The right spin will aid you at leaving the cue ball on the opposite end of the table. Once you practice shooting the shot with correct speed you will become very proficient in executing it. In fact, it will become almost automatic.
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
Figure 1 - Courtesy of Wei Chao You will also want to note that you can execute the shot from a snookered position (Figure 2). The shot below is a little more difficult to execute but can be mastered after shooting it a few times. The key to this shot is to kick to the bottom rail first with lots of left spin. Again, striking about 1/8 of the object ball using the correct speed. Remember to use lots of sidespin. This will serve to aid you in repositioning the cue ball on the opposite end of the table.
Figure 2 - Courtesy of Wei Chao So the next time you are faced with a difficult shot remember to look for something simple. “Knitting” may be the answer! Many times the difference between winning and losing may be buying yourself another trip to the table. It’s important to weigh all of your options and to always give yourself the best opportunity to win. Any time you can gain even a one or two percent advantage, it is important to exercise that option. Even small percentages add up over the course of time.

WHITE DIAMOND
BILLY THORPE
—Article by Mary Kenniston One of the few tournaments that is on any pool player’s favorites list is the semi-annual $100K Super 9-Ball Extravaganza held at White Diamond Billiards in Lafayette, LA on November 19-20, 2016. Played on Valley seven footers, the format was race to seven, alternate break and rack your own. Hundreds of people showed up this weekend to take their shot at one of the biggest paydays in bar box pool or to sweat the action plus enjoy great food!!! The event kicked off on Friday with a minitournament with 78 players. Cliff Joyner defeated Alex Olinger to take the cheese. He received $780 for first while Alex cashed $390. Chip Compton placed third and received $234 while Josh Roberts got $156 for fourth place. Not too shabby for a $20 entry fee! The main event kicked off with The Chris Miller Show. There was plenty of action as folks bid on each player – the first Calcutta totaled $75,680! There were no lucky byes this time! The field was full at 128 players and the battles began – races to 7, alternate breaks, rack your own. Players duked it out until they were down to 32 players and then there was a second Calcutta. New bids totaled $13,680 to be paid to the top four finishers. Finally, it was down to eight players on the winner’s side – sixteen on the west side. Billy Thorpe defeated Robb Saez 7-3, Chase Rudder lost to Shane McMinn by the same score, Daniel McKenney blistered last weekend’s Taom Tour Memphis finalist, Alex Olinger, 7-2 and Robley Fontenot couldn’t keep Danny Smith from advancing 7-4. Hot seat match saw Billy take dead aim at Daniel – final score 7-2. Daniel went west while Billy cooled his heels waiting for an opponent. Meanwhile, on the west side, Robley Fontenot, Chris Miller, Sean King and Alex Olinger finished

9-12th and each received $107 in prize money plus $1324 in Calcutta cash – totaling $1431. Manny Chau and Chase Rudder finished 7-8th – each cashed $214 in prize money and $2649 from the Calcutta for a total of $2863. Robb Saez and Jamie Baracks finished 5-6th and received $367 in prize money with an additional $4541 Calcutta cash – total $4908. Danny Smith defeated Shane McMinn in a hard fought match 7-5 leaving Shane in fourth place. He received $551 in prize money plus $6811 from the first Calcutta and $1675 from the second one - $9307 total. The one loss side final was a battle of the Daniels – Danny took on the waiting Daniel McKenney. The match was neck and neck until 4-4 when McKenney pulled ahead and never looked back - final score 7-4 – leaving Smith with a very respectable third place finish. Danny received $796 in tournament cash plus an additional $9838 and $2234 for the first and second Calcuttas for a total of $12,868. It was a long time coming but the title match was finally ready to start. Since this was true double elimination, McKenney had to defeat Billy Thorpe twice to take the title. Second place prize money was $1040 plus $12,866 for the first Calcutta and $3490 for the second totaling $17,396. The winner would receive $2142 with an additional $26,488 from the first Calcutta with $6561 for the second totaling $35,191 – a difference of almost eighteen big ones!!! Wow!!! Now, that was some serious action!!! Daniel won the lag and drew first blood, forcing Billy to play catch-up. Daniel pulled ahead 4-1, 5-2, 6-3 and then Billy caught up to tie it at 6-6! However, it was now Daniel’s break and he closed the first set out with a 2-9 combination. The final set started out the same way as the first – with Daniel breaking. His failure to get out allowed Billy to rocket out to a 3-0 lead. However,
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
Daniel was having none of it as he rallied to tie the match 4-4 – and his break! He broke the balls and the nine hung in the pocket. Daniel played the carom and followed the nine into the pocket! Instead of 5-4 Daniel, it became 5-4 Billy and now it was his break! Again, the nine headed for the same corner pocket and hung. Billy pocketed two tough shots and played a great carom on the nine putting him on the hill 6-4. Daniel won the next game making it 6-5. Now, it was Billy’s break for the cheese. A nudge by the cue ball turned a cosmo into a tough run out, but run out he did to claim the title! Congratulations to Billy Thorpe for taking the title and a whopping amount of cash! Daniel McKenney played a great event and took home a good-sized chunk himself! Way to go, guys! PoolActionTV.com would like to thank Chris and Ashley Miller and their entire staff of White Diamond Billiards for their great hospitality. They always go all out to make everyone feel welcome. We’d also like to thank our sponsors – Emerald Billiards of New Iberia, LA, Hanshew Custom Cues, GoPlayPool.com, Lomax Custom Cues, EnviroAssessments.com, Durbin Custom Cues, Simonis, Aramith, Gem Cues, JB Cases, Kamui, Rick’s Gun & Pawn, It’s George cases and Club Billiards of Wichita, KS – and, of course, our fans! There were 59 players entered into the Diamond Duel at Sharky’s Billiards on November 6, 2016. Players from all around the area converged on Davenport, Iowa to play some 8-Ball and there were many nail biting endings to numerous matches during the event. Thank you to all of the players for making the trek and playing, and the players supporting crew members for hanging out and sweating the matches in another great event.

WITH ALL 28 qualifying events now complete, the team to represent the United States of America at the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup is now finalized and there is one change from the team that represented the US at the Tropicana last December. The annual transatlantic showdown takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London December 6-9, 2016.
2016 Mosconi Cup: American Five Set for London Showdown become the definition of hard work. He brings tremendous Mosconi Cup experience and just as important the “hang loose” attitude when facing adversity which will assist the less experienced players. He was just inducted into the Hall of Fame which indicates his standing in the sport.
“Justin Bergman is the final pick and his physical stature belies the immense dimension of his pool abilities. Justin is a no-nonsense player who does not flinch during the many hard fought battles certain to occur. Confident and very polished despite being young plus this being his third Mosconi Cup, he will be looked upon as a solid presence within the middle of a very skilled line-up. Last year he was number one statistically for a Team USA and this year we anticipate a similar performance.”
Topping the rankings once again, and by some margin, is Shane Van Boening who will be making his tenth appearance in American colors. He will be joined by Mike Dechaine and Skyler Woodward who came second and third on the ranking respectively. The two wildcards are the highly experienced Rodney Morris who, lik like Van Boening will be making his tenth appearance, and Justin Bergman who comes into the side for the third time.
Tickets for the Mosconi Cup are available from matchroompool.com.
American captain Mark Wilson said, “This year we had the strongest effort to date for making the travel squad to London. That very fact speaks to the value of the points ranking tournament system, which in turn, is stimulating progress towards the U.S. return to the once proud stature in billiards played internationally. “The final decisions regarding captain’s pick player selection were once again very difficult and intensified by the year long race for points. Certainly weight is given to composite point totals and then that is balanced with current form from the final tournaments. “Shane Van Boening is the team’s No.1 and the finest player in the world. Dynamic and powerful, he has never played better nor has he been better

prepared for this year’s Mosconi Cup and leading Team USA to triumph. “Skyler Woodward is young, daring, and full of confidence. Last year he held his own by performing to his best and that experience bodes well for another standout performance in London.
2016 MOSCONI CUP is sponsored by Rasson Billiards who supply the Official Table. The cloth is supplied by Iwan Simonis and the Official Balls are Super Aramith by Saluc. Predator is the Official Cue of the event and Ultimate Team Gear provide all Mosconi Cup apparel. Final Ranking after 28 events
“Mike Dechaine has finished the year in great form and has distinguished himself with multiple victories over international top talent. Power-breaking and terrific shot-making distinguish Mike as someone that can create his own offense without help from the opponent. “Rodney Morris has regained his peak abilities and
