Brickyard Classic Justin Bergman came from the loss side to double dip Ike Runnels in the finals of the 34th Brickyard Classic, otherwise known as the Midwest Bar Table Classic, held on the weekend of March 18-20. Run since 1981, and to the best of our knowledge, the second oldest major event in the sport (next to the US Open 9-Ball Championships), the Brickyard Classic did not celebrate 35 years, because they missed a year. The event drew 64 entrants to Brickyard Billiards in Indianapolis, IN. Bergman's path to the winners' circle, which, given his recent history, one might have assumed would go IKE RUNNELS, JUSTIN BERGMAN undefeated, ran into a speed bump in a winners' side semifinal against Alex Olinger, who sent him to the loss side 9-7. Olinger moved on to face Runnels in the hot seat match; Runnels, having sent Dennis Hatch over, 9-4. Runnels claimed the hot seat rather handily, defeating Olinger 9-1 and waited on Bergman's return. On the loss side, Bergman picked up Billy Thorpe, who'd gotten by Mark Hanson 7-2 and Roger Wall 7-4. Hatch drew Shane Winters, who'd defeated Jason Klatt 7-5 and eliminated Drake Niepotter 7-1. From the point at which Bergman and Hatch arrived on the loss side, every match, leading to the finals, was won by a 7-5 score. Bergman and Winters defeated Thorpe and Hatch, respectively, and advanced to the quarterfinals. Bergman then eliminated Winters, and in the re-match, wreaked his vengeance on Olinger in the semifinals. Bergman completed his title run in a double elimination final. He won the opening set 9-4 and gave up only a single rack in the second set, winning it 7-1.

LindgrenLands Second Gulf Coast Title Loretta Lindgren executed a come-frombehind victory in a 48 player field to secure the second stop on the WPBA sanctioned, Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour. Lindgren suffered an early loss to Belinda Lee, 5-3, and rebounded to meet hot seat winner, Yvonne Asher, in the finals. This was Asher’s debut in a Gulf Coast final, and a first-time, finals face-off for the pair. A seasoned Lindgren overcame Asher in overtime, 5-3, 5-1, to secure her second-ever, Gulf Coast Tour 9-ball title. On February 27, 2016, the Gulf Coast Tour converged on Bogies Billiards West, in Houston Texas, and thanks to room owner David Richardson, tour sponsors Delta-13 Rack and the APA of North Harris County, the Gulf Coast women couldn’t have been more pleased with the success of this event. Great competition and impressive player numbers have set the tone for this year’s Gulf Coast Tour. In full swing for 2016, the “Coast” kicked off an amazing first quarter, with a running total of 53 official WPBA Members, averaging 44 players per event. Tour director, Kimberly Newsome, commented about the growing popularity of the tour. “I expected the tour to grow, but never this big, this fast. The WPBA has expanded our territory to include Louisiana and Oklahoma, and we’re currently in search of venues to host events in those states. We anticipate holding multiple qualifiers for the 2017 WPBA Masters and sending an increased number of invitees to the 2017 WPBA Regional Tour Championships. It’s going to be a year for the record books.” The battlefield was explosive in this one-day, 9-ball extravaganza, as Lorna McEwan made her bid for the final four, with wins over Brandi Humber, D’Andrea McQuirter, Mercedes Vasquez, 5-4, and Toni Esteves, 5-4, while Robyn Petrosino powered through Kim Jenkins, 5-3, Ricki Casper, and Gail Eaton, 5-1. On her way as well, Yvonne Asher bested Angie Payne, 5-2, Natalie Rocha, 5-4, and Cindy Watson, 5-2, while Terry Petrosino (Robyn’s mother)

defeated Mindy Williams, Jennifer Dooley, 5-1, and Belinda Lee, 5-1. As the winners’ side was shaping up, the one loss side witnessed 2015 tour champion, Ricki Casper, eliminate Mindy Williams, Tam Trinh, and Cindy Watson, by the same score, 5-1. Angie Payne had an incredible run after suffering a second round loss at the hands of Asher, 5-2, eliminating Mary Reyes, 5-3, Kim Pierce, Mercedes Vasquez, Sara Bork, and Belinda Lee, to face-off with Casper. Lindgren also made her way through the east side with victories over Karen Hughes, 5-0, Jennifer Dooley, 5-3, and Toni Esteves, 5-2, while Natalie Rocha defeated Liz Yorek, 5-1, and Michelle Yim, 5-3, to meet Lindgren. Back on the east side, R. Petrosino ousted McEwan, 5-2, and Asher slid by T. Petrosino, 5-4, ending the possibility of a mother-daughter, hot seat duel. Asher defeated R. Petrosino for the hot seat, 5-2, and it was anyone’s guess who would power down the one loss road to meet Asher at the end. Back on the west side, Casper ended McEwan’s run, and Lindgren eliminated T. Petrosino, by the same score, 5-4. Lindgren shut out Casper, 5-0, and R. Petrosino, 5-1. Asher was patiently waiting in the wings, anticipating her first final and possible tour title, while Lindgren was searching for second. In the finals, Asher remained vigilant, but Lindgren came on strong, taking the first set, 5-3. With a little extra wind in her sail, Lindgren picked up the pace, ending Asher’s impressive run for the title, 5-1.

Hundreds of spectators watched the finals and many of the marque matchups as they played out during the tournament. Online over 40,000 viewers tuned in to watch the finals as well as the many hours of live

streamed coverage. The $1000 added Men’s Bud Lite WarmUp 8-ball tournament took place Thursday evening before main event. League players and those entered in Main event were welcome to play. 96 men entered the $25 entry, race to 3, Double elimination event. The short race can be a real equalizer with top players and was a lure to our local league players who hoped for the opportunity to play the best in the world. There was over $3200 in prize money up for grabs and, in the end, it was Dennis Orcollo taking 1st and $1000 followed by Oscar “Gentleman” Dominquez in 2nd place ($640), Jeffery Ignacio 3rd ($400), Ernesto Dominquez 4th ($260), Hunter Lombardo and Warren Kiamco 5th/6th ($160 each). The Women’s WarmUp tournament saw Bernie Store from Arizona run through the field of 18 women to take top spot ($370) followed by Janet Dunks from Montana 2nd ($180), Mary Coffman 3rd ($100) and Juanita Brown from Utah 4th ($50). The Calcutta went off well. Auctioning through both fields took some time but it was well worth it. There was a net $26,370 in the men’s and $4,460 in the women’s. Paul “Kez” Marquez was calling on bidders to buy horses. His enthusiasm propelled the bids. Runners Denise Pulido and Darcy Williams ran holes in the carpet bring in money. It was a fun and exciting event. Top Horses were Dennis Orcollo, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward. Top Calcutta prize was $10,230. Producing the Chinook Winds Open events take 100’s of hours. Cocoordinators/directors Andrew Monstis and Mike Jensen ran the event from start to finish. Bill Henderson and the WBCA team: Eileen Madden, Darcy Williams, Robbin Iredale (PR staff coordinator), Cathy Dunford (financial manager) and Pam Caraway (Podium manager) & all involved staff worked together to make this event successful. “It was about pool”. The acclaim came in from all fronts. It was very gratifying to hear the applause coming from both participants and spectators. Players new to the event said they had never seen such a distinguished event and are coming back to play at the next one in October. The event is growing nationally and world wide in stature with professionalism and popularity. The Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball in March had Mosconi Cup Points available to the pro’s as they vie for a spot on

Team USA. A huge gallery of spectators watched many excellent matches as the Tournament unfolded. People were able to watch Janet Dunks and Bernie Store and learn what great pool playing is about. The crowds were in awe of top players like Nicole Keeney, Liz Lovely, Kelly Isaac, Dennis Orcollo, Michael Dechaine, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward, Corey Deuel, Oscar and Ernesto Dominquez, Steve Knoll, Marc Vidal, Rodney Morris, Scott Frost, Hunter Lombardo, Rene Rendon, Shawn Wilkie, Jason Klatt, and Chris McDaniels. They were equally astonished by top local players Cindy Sliva, Kim Jones, Eddie Carrido, and Damian Pongpanik, to name but a few. Ask anybody. Stroking is better than poking. Now ask them why. “Um, uh, it looks better.” Yes, it certainly does look better, but let’s peer a little more deeply. This is a big deal. The jump from poking to stroking is huge. But if you’re ever going to be an excellent player, you’re gonna have to do it. A nice stroke is highly desirable. With it come better touch and speed control, and more consistent action. It feels good, and it looks good. So what are we talking about? We’ve all seen beautiful strokes, and knew they were beautiful somehow, even though they may look quite different from each other. We’ve heard comments like “he’s got mercury in his arm,” or “that’s a sweet stroke.” What are we seeing there? I think we’re seeing a silky, fluid, ultra-smooth swinging motion. It’s a motion that tells us that cue is pretty much directly connected to the player’s intent – his mental image of what he wants the ball to do. It’s a stroke that has been honed through hundreds or thousands of hours and is now smooth, simple, effortless, and accurate. Jerry Briesath says a stroke is “a beautiful throwing motion.” I like that image. What are some of the qualities of a stroke? The stick swings without effort, very smoothly, with no jerky transitions, no hitches, no muscle. It feels like you’re ever so smoothly throwing the stick through the ball. The right feeling is to feel like you’re accelerating through the ball. You’re releasing the stick, not pushing it or pulling it back. When you’re not ready to shoot – you’re not focused, you don’t like your plan, you’re not confident you’re aiming accurately – your stroke will suffer. A great stroke is without doubt. What characterizes a poke? Pokes are jerky. The stick looks like it’s being muscled around. Often, an overly tight grip will lead to pokes. If your hand is clenched, your forearm is also involved, along with some of your upper arm musculature. This “extra” muscle use interferes with the fluidity of the swing, making it look more like a jab. Where a stroke can be said to accelerate smoothly forward, a poke decelerates, actually slowing down on the way to the ball. A lag speed stroke might naturally yield a followthrough of about 4” or 5” past the cueball.

This is because the player doesn’t try to stop the stick. He throws it and commits. Meanwhile, a lag speed poke may follow through half-way into the cueball, or not at all. This is because the player is slowing the stick. Watch closely and see how players don’t follow through, or just follow a little. To do that, they had to be pulling back against the forward motion of the stick. Instead of just allowing the bicep to pull the stick forward in the swing, the tricep is working too. They’re fighting each other. It’s pretty hard to have the kind of touch and consistency you need as a player when you’re moving in two opposing directions at once. Here are a few things to try in your quest for a better stroke: • Check your follow-through. The idea is to allow the natural amount of follow-through for the speed of the stick. Poking comes from interfering with the simple, natural forward swing. Throw the stick and let it go as far as it goes. Don’t pull back. • No clenching. Any muscle tension you’re holding, especially in the shooting arm, interferes with the free flow of the stroke. Try to find your clenches and let them go. One way to do that is to clench a muscle hard and try to stroke. Let it go. Soften. Now, let it go some more. Keep stroking and observe what happens as you soften. • Increase touch. Most good players heft the butt of the cue as part of their pre-shot routine. They are trying to get the feel of the cue, connecting with its weight, shape, and texture. For most players, a light grip provides better touch, a better joining of cue and player. • Melt your triceps. On the hit stroke, try an image of the tricep giving up more and more completely as the stick moves forward through the swing. • No hitting. Pokers hit the cueball. They hit it and stop there. Strokers toss the stick confidently through the ball, like it’s not even there. They don’t hit the ball – they connect with it. • Trust your skills. Your body knows how to line up the shot and how hard to shoot. Throw the stick and trust it. You can’t really effectively steer or change speed during the hit stroke anyway. Don’t interfere with a beautiful thing.

How many times have you gone to the pool hall to practice, or bang the ball with your friends, only to feel a little blasé about the usual games? 8-ball just seems so... plain, and you’re just not feeling 9-ball. Straight pool? Boring! One-Pocket? Um… what part of “boring” didn’t you understand? It would sure be nice if there were some other games to play, wouldn’t it? Fear not, my friend! I’m here to help! Over the next few articles, I’m going to teach you some new games to play. Hopefully, these will help you out on those days when you want to play something a little more unconventional! This month’s game is Honolulu. Other names for this game are Banks, Kisses and Combos, or Indirect. It’s a very similar game to Banks. The object of the game of Honolulu is to be the first player to pocket 8 balls. A ball only counts if you make it in the pocket you call. And it only counts if you make it by any means, except straight in. That’s right – you can bank it, kick it, carom, or make a combo. As long as you call the ball and pocket, and it goes in any other way than straight into the pocket, you score a point and continue your turn at the table. The caveat here is that you cannot “kick” or “bank” off of the rail that’s connected to the pocket. So, a shot that goes into the corner after brushing the rail just before it goes in does NOT count – that’s considered a straight-in shot.

Called shots must even be made on the break. A common call is the head ball in the side pocket. If you do not pocket a called ball, 2 balls must hit a rail. Failure to do so is a foul. Fouls are standard: failure to hit a rail after striking a ball, scratching, and hitting the cue ball off of the table are all fouls. The penalty for fouling is the loss of a ball. If you have made balls, one ball is brought back to the table and is spotted on the foot spot. If you do not have any balls down, you will owe a ball. Honolulu is a fantastic game to practice some of your more unorthodox shots. It also teaches you to look at the table a little differently, and may open your eyes to new possibilities that you may not have considered in a standard game of 8-ball. If this game is a little too challenging for you, you might consider playing with 9 balls, instead of 15, and the first person to make 5 balls wins. Another variation is to take ball-in-hand for every shot, or at the beginning of each inning. Sounds like this would be easy, but believe me, it’s still challenging. This is also a good way to handicap your game if your opponent is a weaker player – they get ball in hand every time, and you do not. Killing the Cue Ball

When playing position, you often need to move the cue ball an uncomfortably long distance. Other times you will run into shots like in the diagram where you need to minimize how far the cue ball goes. Let’s work on some techniques that will help you “kill the rock”. In Shot 1, you have a fairly thin cut on the 6 ball and you want to stop the cue ball close to the cushion for the 7 ball. I suppose you could go up and down the table twice, but that is a pretty hard shot to control to get nearly straight on the 7. Instead, use draw to slow the cue ball down after it hits the 6. Most players know draw for its ability to make the cue ball come back after a nearly full hit. The effect on a thin hit is quite a bit different. At the cue ball leaves the 6 ball, the draw puts on the breaks and significantly slows down the ball, holding the travel of the cue ball to maybe a quarter as far as it would go with a simple rolling shot. In order for the shot to work well, you will need your very best draw, which means you will need to hit the cue ball as low as possible without miscuing. Chalk well and then inspect your tip. Did you leave any bare spots? When starting to practice this technique, it also helps for the cue ball to be quite close to the 6 ball so that not much draw is lost on the way to the 6 ball. Now you are going to find the range of cut angles where you can use the draw technique. Start your tries with an angle so wide (a very thin hit) that it seems impossible to stop the cue ball in time and still get the 6 ball to the pocket. Adjust your speed until the 6 ball just rolls over the brink of the pocket. If the cue ball goes too far even when it feels like you had your best draw on the cue ball, make the cut angle a little less severe and try again until you find the toughest angle where you can control the cue ball. If you make the cut angle easier still, you will need to dial back on the draw or it will make the cue ball curve into the 8 and 9. You should still be able to get position but it will eventually turn into a stun shot -- a shot where the cue ball contacts the object ball with close to zero spin. Shot 2 shows a possible result from Shot 1. You have some angle on the 7 ball and you have to keep the cue ball from bouncing off the cushion too far or you won’t have a shot on the 8 ball. Ideally, you would like to leave the cue ball almost touching the cushion. You will be working on this shot for a while, so let’s make it easy to set up. The 7 is exactly one ball diameter off the cushion and even with the first diamond, as shown. Your job here is to find out how far from the cushion you can put the cue ball and still make

the 7 and leave the cue ball close to the cushion -- say within a chalk space. Exactly which combination of speed, side spin and draw/ follow works best here depends on the table conditions, so you will have to experiment. My suggestion is to first try right English on the equator of the cue ball and to shoot no harder than needed to make the 7 ball. Of course it will help to cheat the pocket, and with a short shot like this you should be able to send the 7 to the right side of the pocket without much risk of missing. Once you have a set of spins and speed that works well, try starting the cue ball out farther and farther until you can’t kill the rock well enough to have a shot.

“Harness the Power from Within” When asked the question, nearly all pool players stated that “Nerves” were the most common reason that they miss important shots during match play. Most believe they need to shoot every tournament ball as if it were practice. They believe if they could play like they practice, their performance level would escalate. That precept couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, people perceive a case of the “nerves” as something 100 percent negative. Even good players fail to recognize that it is possible to harness all of that energy and transform it into a powerful force that can propel your game forward. Some players fear poor performance in front of others, or not being able to play to the level that they expect during crucial end game situations. People get nervous for all sorts of reasons but usually it is linked to the fact that they want to win. Players need to take a hard look at the feelings they have about themselves so they can better understand that being nervous is actually just a negative way of saying something that is quite positive. Being nervous simply means that you are contentious about how you want to be perceived when you perform in front of others. “Nerves” are viewed as being bad because we associate them with fears or doubts that are related to how we may or may not perform. What we have to do is start associating our “nervousness” with something positive. Like it or not, you will never get rid of the “nerves.” You just have to learn how to handle them during key situations. In fact, pro pool players actually welcome “nerves” because it helps put them in the “zone.” Essentially, it helps them focus all of their attention and channel their excess energy into doing all the right things that need to be done. Most players don’t even

know what they are capable of. They have never even tried to convert excess negative energy into something positive. One thing is for sure: If you never leave your comfort zone, you will never be able to figure out how great of a player you could become. Being nervous just means that you are in uncharted waters and are uncomfortable because you are unsure of what might happen. If this seems all too familiar to you, then you should try to focus all of your energy back into your game. Just try to view each match as an opportunity to play your best. Always try to be as prepared as you can for each shot. This will also help make you more confident and will help you to replace negative thoughts and emotions with positive ones. In fact, nervous energy can actually help you reach a state of awareness significantly higher than exhibited during practice. That is where a good pre-shot routine comes in. There is nothing better than a good preshot routine to help you focus all of your energy into something positive. A well thought out pre-shot routine also gives you an outlet for all of your excess energy. Focusing on the process will help you to play in the present rather dwelling on the past. Once you start to incorporate a positive approach into your pre-shot process, your game will improve by leaps and bounds. Remember, it is also important to focus on breathing properly; it will help you to relax. Concentrate on all of the good things that could happen to you and forget any negative experiences from the past. Once you develop a good “feel” for the game, you can stop thinking about stroke mechanics. This in itself is something positive, simply because most of us are taught that we play poorly because we have some sort of mechanical problem. In reality, our poor performance may be related to the fact that we are becoming tense and letting nervous energy get the best of us. In the future, try to think about “nerves” as something that will give you body the extra energy needed to perform well. Don’t tense up; just try to relax! Learn to harness your inner power and use it in both a positive and productive way.

A GREAT ESCAPE

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I was introduced to this great shot by my good friend and toughest opponent, Mike Massey. We were playing against each other in the then very successful ESPN Trick Shot Magic and he pulled this shot off scoring a beautiful point. Being 7-8 inches shorter than Mike did not help me as I had a hard time leaning over as much as the shot required so I could not adjust within the allotted two tries and lost a precious point. It goes without saying that the first thing I did as I got back home was to practice this shot which still is a pretty challenging one but definitely makeable within 2-3 tries. As shown in the diagram, place your Cue Ball frozen to the long rail at 1.5 diamond distance from the top left corner pocket. Then start placing all the obstacle balls around it: two balls frozen to it and perpendicular to the long rail; one ball frozen to the long rail at half diamond from the corner pocket; one ball one inch away from the long rail and at the second diamond. Lastly place three more balls frozen to each other and to the short rail at 1.5 diamonds from the same upper left corner pocket and the Object Ball by the lower left corner pocket. This is not the most comfortable shot as you will need to place your elevated bridge hand between the Cue Ball and the Obstacle Ball (the brown ball). Then you’ll need to raise your right leg and rest it on top of the table for a good reach. As you see, you will need to aim into the long rail, almost at the first diamond so you can either bring your forearm out and parallel to the table’s surface, if you want to use a regular grip, or you can keep your forearm closer to your body if you want to use the European style inverted grip, the one I use for all my masse shots. Elevate your cue by 45-50⁰ and hit the CB at 10:30 with 2.5 tips of English. We need a lot of spin on our CB as we want it to draw a curve once it comes off the rail and still hold some spin when it bounces off the second rail so it can slightly curve around the two object balls (the black and the blue ones). Hit the CB firmly with a 2.5-3 stroke. That should be enough to clear the 2 obstacle balls next to it and make your OB (the yellow one) in the bottom left corner pocket. A clean CB and a new cloth make this shot a little easier and if you don’t want to dirty the cloth or, even worse, to damage it, you may want to use my Cloth Shield (US Patent Pending). Open 9-Ball AzBilliards.com Mar 1, 2016 SHREVEPORT, LA Dennis Orcollo battled Johnny Archer twice to win the late February edition of the Sidepocket's Open 9-Ball tournament (held three times a year, at the end of February, October and June). In a pair of equally intriguing matchups, Archer and Orcollo both got by Skyler Woodward, which set up their initial hot seat match and the finals. The $2,000-added event drew 126 entrants to Sidepocket Billiards in Shreveport, LA. In the two winners' side semifinals, Orcollo got into the hot seat match by defeating Woodward 7-5, as Archer was busy downing Ryan Lane, double hill. In their first of two, Orcollo sent Archer to the semifinals 7-4 and sat in the hot seat, awaiting his return. On the loss side, Woodward picked up Roberto Gomez, who'd gotten by Jeff Sorrell 7-4, and Joey Barnes 7-3. Lane drew Warren Kiamco, who'd eliminated Karl McClendon and Gary Abood, both 7-3. Woodward advanced to the quarterfinals 7-4 over Gomez and was joined by Kiamco, who'd ended Lane's weekend 7-3. It was time for three straight marquee matchups, beginning with Woodward and Kiamco in the quarterfinals. Woodward prevailed 7-4 to draw Archer in the semifinals. Archer eliminated him 7-3 to earn a second shot at Orcollo. In a nail-biter, back and forth match, Orcollo eventually pulled out in front and claimed the event title in a single set, 7-5, over Archer.

Jacob Triplett, of Tulsa, won the 28-player 8-Ball tournament at Back Alley Billiards in McAlester, Okla., on Sat. Jan. 30. Triplett took the championship title without losing a single match. He won his first match against Jason Chappell 5-1, then won 5-2 in his second and third matches against Chris McCreary and Stan Lane. He then beat Clay Dorrell 5-3 and won his hot seat match against Todd Barrier 5-2. He played Dorrell again in the finals and won 5-2. Triplett won $285 in tournament winnings and $380 in Calcutta money. Dorrell won $185 for 2nd in the tournament and $270 in Calcutta money. Barrier won $120 for 3rd in the tournament and $200 in Calcutta money. Stan Lane got 4th in the tournament and won $80 and $150 Calcutta. Charles & Jethwa Tour newcomer Peter Charles was the big story at the first official Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour Spring 9-Ball Event, held on February 27-28, 2016, at Bogies Billiards West in Houston, TX. This event drew a staggering 73 entries in the amateur 9-ball division, and 53 in the open 9-ball division. After losing in the fourth round to J.C. Torres, 7-6, Pete Charles went on to decimate the amateur division, besting Anthony Gepayo in the finals, 7-3, 5-1, to capture his first amateur 9-ball division title. Former tour champion, Andy Jethwa, went undefeated in the open 9-ball division, overcoming Blaine Barcus in the final match, 9-8, adding yet another title to his Poison Lone Star Tour resume. Bogies Billiards West, along with tour sponsors www.OzoneBilliards.com, Delta-13 Rack www.Delta-13.com, and the APA of North Harris County www. facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty, aided the tour in facilitating another successful event, with a 126 player turnout, and providing an additional $1,500 for the prize fund. On the winners’ side of the amateur 9-ball division, newcomer Eduardo Hernandez made his bid for the final four with wins over Fernando Lopez, Chuck Adams, 7-6, Michael Pickering, and Tyler Partin, 7-3, while Dickinson’s Josh White ousted Charlie Jenkins, 7-2, Matt Peters, 7-0, Masahiro “Hiro” Nakahara, 7-6, and Viet Do, 7-3. Anthony Gepayo took down J.J. Manley, Barry Titus, 7-6, David Massie, 7-0, Jacob Watson, 7-2, and Will Felder, 7-6, while J.C. Torres logged wins over Marty Walker, Daniel Wise, 7-2, Lester Foy, Pete Charles, 7-6, and David Leal, 7-3. White shut down Hernandez, 7-6, and Torres fell to Gepayo, 7-3. While the winners’ side was playing out, the one loss side was heating up. After losing his first match to Kevin Nguyen, Bobby Perez won 6 consecutive matches, including wins over Chris Collette, 5-2, and Jesse Langston, 5-3. Notching his belt once more with a victory over Jacob Watson , Perez advanced to the final 12, along with Pete Charles who defeated Joshua Pangilinan, 5-2, Abel Lara who ousted Michael Pickering by the same score, and Nakahara who ended Nguyen’s run, 5-3. It was Perez over Partin, Charles defeating Do, 5-3, Lara ousting Felder, 5-4, and Nakahara over Leal, 5-4, to round out the final four survivors on the one loss side. Back on the east side, White

Charles was on a role and on his way to the finals as he made quick work of Hernandez and White, by the same score, 5-2. After two days of grueling play, Gepayo and Charles faced off in Sunday’s finals. Charles maintained his consistent play, and although Gepayo put up a good fight, he succumbed to Charles two sets, 7-3, 5-1. In the open 9-ball division, resident player and former tour champion Andy Jethwa began his quest for the hot seat, defeating Jesse Langston, J.C. Torres, 9-3, and Phillip Tieu, 9-4. Bobby Perez played his way out, with wins over Charlie Jenkins, Blaine Barcus, Chuck Adams, 9-4, and Chase Wheeler, 9-2. True to form, Jethwa defeated Rudder for the hot seat, 9-3. On the one loss side, Tieu won 4 straight matches, including victories over Aldo Rosso, 7-5, Michael Pickering, 7-4, and Tom Welch, 7-1. Nguyen took down 6 consecutive matches, eliminating David Leal, 7-6, Jesse Langston, 7-1, and Anthony Gepayo, 7-5. Nakahara was blazing his own trail on the west side, with wins over Steve Williams, 7-4, J.C. Torres, 7-3, and Mike Wheeler, 7-8. Perhaps the biggest comeback on the one loss side came from Barcus, who won an impressive 5 consecutive matches to meet Nakahara in the final four on the one loss side. Tieu eliminated Nguyen, 7-5, but fell to Perez, 7-2, while Barcus took down Nakahara, and Bosshamer, 7-5. Barcus went on to defeat Perez and Rudder, by the same score, 7-2, amassing 9 consecutive match wins to meet Jethwa in the finals. The first set was a real crowd-pleaser, as Jethwa and Barcus took it to the hill. Jethwa’s intense focus and determination served him well, as he secured the final game, and became the first open 9-ball title holder on the new Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. Stevie Collins Snags Title On the weekend of February 20-21, the Omega Billiards Tour was hosted by The Billiard Den in Richardson, Texas. The staff and owners treated the players well with great service and an amazing atmosphere, and we very much appreciate each and every one of them! We were able to extend the field to 88 players for this second stop of the 2016 season. And it was tough to predict who would come out on top with all the talent in the field. Always a top contender, Crispian Ng, had a great tournament with tough matches over Chase LaFerney 7-5, teammate Robin Barbour 7-5, Alberto Nieto 7-4, Jim Colling 7-5 and best friend David Josephson 7-5. Stevie Collins was fighting through the bottom half of the bracket with wins over Kyle Rowland 7-0, Chris Smith hill-hill, George Merchan 7-2, Ian Perez 7-1, and Anthony Schaeffer 7-2 before finding Crispian in the hotseat. Crispian would win another close one in the hotseat match over Stevie by a score of 7-5. Gerardo Perez would place his highest finish with an impressive 3rd place! He lost his second match hillhill then won TEN matches in a row to meet up the Stevie Collins in the Semi-Final match. Stevie would win 7-3 to find a spot in the finals, but a HUGE congrats to Gerardo for his fine play all weekend. Denny Sneed placed high again in the Omega with a 4th place finish, with David Josephson and Anthony Schaeffer both placed their highest finish with 5th/6th places out of 88 players. Special shout out to George Merchan for placing 7th/8th (his highest finish to date) and to Ian Perez for his 9th place finish in his first Omega Tour event. The finals were a tough, tough battle between Stevie Collins and Crispian Ng. Crispian is a BCAPL Nationals 9-Ball Champion and Stevie Collins is also a top player (and this was his home pool room). Both players wanted the win badly and it showed. First set went a thrilling hillhill with Stevie never giving up, forcing a second set. Then the second set went hill-hill again! Stevie continued his great play and ran out 7 balls to win the game, the match, the finals, and the tournament! His first Omega Billiards Tour win! Congratulations also to Crispian for

fighting hard all weekend for his second place finish. He’s always hard on himself, but he played so good all weekend and deserves lots of kudos as well. OB Cues Ladies 9-Ball Tour held their first tour stop of 2016 on the weekend of February 6th – 7th at Rusty’s Billiards in Arlington, Texas. Sixty-one players, both old and new, were represented from across Texas and even from Florida, to set record attendance for the inaugural 2016 stop. The owner and manager, Jeff Pitts and Tim Gildon and the entire bar and wait staff did a wonderful job taking care of all the ladies! Special thanks to our title sponsor OB Cues for providing us awesome products to Rusty’s so they could once again host the amazing $2000 added monies event. Also a big thank you to our tour sponsor MzTam.com for providing re-useable travel bags for all of our players! Tam you have mad pool skills and creative, classy finesse off the table as well. This 1st stop of the year saw many new firsts

TARA Williams Wins Season Opener for the tour. OB Cues Ladies 9-ball tour is now sanctioned under the newly formed nationwide pool tour NAPT. Currently, the NAPT is comprised of established regional tours with an estimated 400 female players nationwide. NAPT plans to offer more opportunities for all players at all levels throughout North America. For more information, be sure to visit www.playnapt.com for information on their new and exciting adventures in the pool/billiards arena. There were also several firsts amongst the players. Namely a couple of players from Longview, Texas scored in the money for playing in their 1st event ever----a feat rarely accomplished first time out. LeAnne Barham finished 13th-16th as well as Teresa Urban who finished 9th-12th. Teresa had an extra special event wherein her name was drawn for the player’s 10-Ball break and run pot of $321 and she pocketed 2 balls on the break where she took her $64 dollars and was satisfied with that extra score. These ladies, as well as other East Texas contingents, represented their area very well and hope to see them at future OBCLT events. Also Emily Sumrall of Arlington, playing in her 1st time OBCLT tour stop, finished 9th-12th and had an superb tournament weekend. Emily has always been a strong competitor and shooter. We hope, too, that she will continuing her winning ways at more stops. With 61 players in full force, it was anybody’s guess who would fare the best and be the final 16 returning on Sunday morning. The final eight in the winner’s bracket were Jennifer Pavlovick vs. Orietta Strickland, Alicia Stanley vs. Tara Williams, Corina Campbell vs. Emily Sumrall, and Teresa Urban vs. Terry Petrosino. The eight ladies returning on the one loss side were Jeannie Kim vs. Jennifer Kraber, Monica Anderson vs. Jeannie Seaver, Natalie Mans vs. LeAnne Barham, and Tracie Voelkering vs. Chris Fields. Eliminated first round Sunday morning at the 13th-16th positions were Jeannie Kim of Carrollton, LeAnne Barham of Longview, Tracie Voelkering of Fort Worth, and Monica Anderson of Dallas. Following in the 9th-12th positions were Emily Sumrall of Arlington, Teresa Urban of Longview, Natalie Mans

of Houston, and Chris Fields of Weatherford. The 7/8th positions went to Jennifer Pavlovick of Irving and Jeannie Seaver of Rockledge, FL while the 5/6th positions were filled by Jennifer Kraber of Austin and Corina Campbell of Dallas. Alicia Stanley of Aubrey, in her first stop since 2010, showed exceptional tables skills to take the fourth place spot. In the winner’s side, Tara Williams battled her way through Saturday with some close wins over Jeannie Seaver (7-6), Natalie Mans (7-6), and Jennifer Yo (7-4). On the other side of the winner’s bracket, Terry Petrosino was making her way through her Saturday matches with her steadily consistent play. She posted wins over Snowy Belt (7-0), Robyn Petrosino (7-3), and Marilina Nieves (7-3). In the hot seat match, both players struggled to find their groove, making some uncharacteristic mistakes. Tara ended up taking the match 7-3 and waited to see who would be coming through the one-loss side to meet her in the finals. For the 3rd place match, Orietta was on fire all the while pocketing balls and getting out from almost everywhere she shot from. She made quick work of the match against Terry Petrosino of Spring, winning with a final score of 7-1. Congratulations to Terry for another great tournament! In the finals, Orietta would need to beat Tara twice to claim the first place spot and the $750 in prize money. Both players put on a spectacular show of skill and determination, filling the match with run-outs and strategic safeties. Neither player could gather a lead, trading games back and forth the whole match. It came down to a hill-hill match with Tara on final break. She made a ball and had a shot on the one-ball, but difficult shape to get on the next ball. She overshot the one-ball, leaving a tough 3-9 combination, which she pocketed, not giving Orietta a chance to get to the table in the final game. Congratulations to both ladies for an exciting finals match and great tournament finish! With this sixteenth tour stop win, Tara Williams ties the OB Ladies Tour record for most wins by a single player. Lisa Marr is the only other player in tour history to hold sixteen tour stop wins.

2016 Wisconsin Junior State 9-Ball Champs Story by Ben Zeman, WI APA League Operator / Photos by Rob Brumm, Shoot to Thrill March 3, 2016 (Denver, CO): It was a great day for youth billiards as Jacoby Custom Cues played host to the 2016 Junior 9 Ball State Championship, January 31st in Nekoosa Wisconsin. 36 young players ranging from age of 5 to 18 participated in the festivities. The format was BCA 9 ball for the 10-14 and 15-18 age divisions. The 9 and under division played a game called Spider Ball 7. This is a game where the balls numbered 1 through 6 are placed about 6 inches out of each pocket and the 7 ball is placed on the spot. The players run the table in order just like in 9 ball, and ball in hand rules apply. After the tournament started to wind down a free Adult/ Child Scotch Doubles tournament was offered to anyone who wanted to participate. “Rack Em” wins the Thursday 8-Ball league at Back Alley Billiards

“Rack Em” was named league champions of the Thursday Fall/Winter 8-Ball League hosted by Back Alley Billiards in McAlester, Okla. Team members include Trenton Bolding, Pete Manschreck, Robert Webb, Ryan Holmes, Shan Weiher, Lee Riddle and Mike Harnage. The team won 226 games of 350 played and got $415 for their first-place finish. Robert Webb won the Legaue Most Valuable Player award. He won 50 games of 60 played in the league session. He had 5 undefeated matches, an errorless run-out and three break-and-runs. Ryan Holmes finished the season with the highest winning percentage – 86.6%. Marie Berryhill won the award for Top Lady shooter. She won 30 of 70 games played. Trenton Bolding won an award for most 8-Ball-Breaks and Robert Webb won an award for most undefeated matches. Marlan Isbell won an award for Most RunOuts. Isbell had two errorless run-outs and six breakand-runs. Back Alley Billiards hosts numerous leagues and tournaments all year long.
