Amanda Lampert Wins Jamaica Joe’s OB Cues Ladies Tour Stop #2

OB Cues Ladies Tour Stop #2 was held at Jamaica Joe’s, Midwest City, OK, March 9th/10thweekend. Jamaica Joe’s, a regular host site for the OB Cues Ladies Tour hosted 29 ladies who ventured from Texas (Houston, DFW, Austin, and Sherman) and the local Oklahoma vicinity. Jess Massey and her crew were fabulous as always and we do have to say that the renovations are truly magnificent and top notch. We are so excited about always being at Jamaica Joe’s that we will return for another tour stop visit the weekend of September 21st/22nd, 2013 and hope to see more lady Oklahoma players step up to the challenge of taking on the Texas ladies. There was some tough action all weekend long and many closely contested matches. With the tournament being a 2-day event, the top 8 returned for battle on Sunday to see who would grab the $550 1stplace prize money. In the winners bracket was local Oklahoma player, Sherri Foley vs. Orietta Strickland and teammates Tracie Voelkering vs. Melinda Bailey. On the one-loss side it was 2012 OBCLT Champion Kim Pierce vs. Amanda Lampert and Liz Mitchel vs. Angie Payne. The hot seat match was played by Sherri and Melinda with Melinda securing her spot in the finals.

Finishing 7th/8thwas Kim Pierce and Liz Mitchel; 5th/6thTracie Voelkering and Orietta Strickland and 4thplace was Angie Payne, which is Angie’s highest finish ever since playing on the tour. Congratulations to all the ladies for some awesome shooting. Amanda, a true champion both on and off the pool table, brings excitement with her game wherever she goes. With her seemingly flawless pool shooting playing skills and a heart of gold to match, you can never count her out. She lost her 2ndmatch ofthe tournament to Sherri Foley, but was able to get her redemption by defeating Sherri 7-2. Sherri finished in 3rd place for a great event. Good job Sherri! Amanda had won 5 previous matches to get to the finals and she would need to win the next two to get her 2ndback to back tour win. The matchup was a repeat of what happened at OB Cues Ladies Tour Stop #1 wherein Amanda and Melinda were in the finals and Amanda double-dipped Melinda for tour stop #1 win. This time Amanda, once again double-dippedMelinda 7-1, 7-5 for her second and back-to-back tour stop win. Both ladies played superb. Congratulations for a fantastic finish.

BY SKIP MALONEY - AZBILLIARDS.COM

Deuel and Lee Corey Deuel stopped a seven-match, loss-side streak by Hui Chan Lu to win the Men’s event, while Jeannette Lee, a little later, had to get by Nicole Keeney twice, and in the process, lend new meaning to the term “playing lights out” on her way to the championship. Both were winners in the 22nd Annual Four Bears Classic, a $16,500-added (total) pair of 8-ball tournaments for Men and the Ladies from April 18-21 at the Four Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, ND. The long weekend actually began on Wednesday, April 17, when pro player Melissa Little sponsored a pool clinic for a local Boys/Girls club, at which 50 youngsters were given a pool cue and case by the Four Bears Casino Lodge. On Thursday night, events got officially under way with a $2,000-added, 9-ball tournament that was won by Joey Gray. The main event Men’s and Ladies 8-ball tournaments, which began on Friday night, drew 164 and 55 entrants, respectively. Both were triple elimination tournaments, at which competitors on both sides of the bracket, were re-drawn and set up for a new double elimination tournament. The men re-drew when the field had narrowed down to 16 on each side of the bracket. The women did so with eight on each side of the bracket. Advancing among the winners’ side final four in the men’s event were Shane Van Boening, Bart Good, Mark Haddad (who finished second in last year’s tournament, won by Jesse Engel) and Deuel. Van Boening and Deuel advanced to the hot seat match with identical 6-1 victories over Good and Haddad, respectively. Deuel battled Van Boening for the hot seat and came out on top 6-3. Van Boening would not make it back for a second chance against Deuel. Instead, Deuel would be challenged by Hui Chan Lu, who’d been sent west by Good, and embarked on the seven-match, loss-side streak that put him into the finals. The streak included victories over Shane Manolo and the Thursday night, 9-Ball winner, Joey Gray, which set Chan up to face Haddad. Good drew Stan Tourangeau, who’d eliminated Chip Compton andDanny Olson. Lu and Tourangeau met in the quarterfinals once Lu had downed Haddad 6-2 and Tourangeau bested Good 6-3. Lu chalked up his sixth straight with a double hill win over Tourangeau and then finished Van Boening’s weekend with a 6-3 win in the semifinals. Deuel, though, stopped Lu’s bid for the title with a 6-3 win. Had it not been for Jeanette Lee, the finals of the Ladies event might have been a carbon copy of last year’s finals, in which Melissa Little and Nicole Keeney battled. This year, with Lee in the hot seat, Little and Keeney squared off in the semifinals. Lee had defeated Keeney in the battle for the hot seat 5-3, once Lee had sent Sam Matuska west and Keeney had defeated Lisa McNab.

l e u e D y e r o C 6 Rackem Magazine - November 2012

Little, having been sent to the loss side by Lee when they were among the final eight winners, had defeated Rachel Nadue and Joanne Jacobs to pick up McNab. Matuska drew Joelle Bearstall, who’d gotten by Rene Benton and Julie Brunelle. Little and Mutuska advanced to the quarterfinals, where Little prevailed 6-1, setting up last year’s final scenario in this year’s semifinals. The result was the same, almost to the score. Keeney had downed Little 5-3 in last year’s finals and ended her Four Bears Classic bid this year 5-2 in the semifinals. About midway through the final match between Lee and Keeney, the lights went out. Emergency lighting stopped the scene from being a visual blackout (The Big Truck Show kept broadcasting), but the conditions stopped play. When play resumed about half an hour later, Lee ended Keeney’s bid to win the Classic for the second year in a row with a 5-2 victory.

UNDEFEATED In the no-scores-kept Thursday night 9-ball tournament, Joey Gray was in the hot seat, having sent Chip Compton to the semifinals. Compton moved over to face the man he’d sent to the loss side from among the winners’ side final four, Warren Kiamco. Kiamco had just defeated Jeanette Lee in the quarterfinals, and wreaked his vengeance on Compton, setting up the final against Gray. Gray prevailed 6-4 to take the title. Tour director Ray Poitra thanked the staff and crew at the Four Bears Casino & Lodge, including general manager Pat Packineau, Spencer Wilkinson, and Scott Wilson, as well as Trustland, Inc, PoolActionTV (The Big Truck show, which streamed matches throughout the weekend), and us here at AZBilliards. THE INTERVIEW: Viper: Where were you born? Lu: Hsinchu, Tawain Viper: Do you have a girlfriend? Lu: No, I am basically married to pool Viper: Do you have siblings? Lu: I am the oldest of five children and none of them play pool Viper: What do your parents think of your pool career? Lu: My parents have always encouraged to me to be the best that I can be. Viper: As far as a Taiwanese player, who did you look up to? Lu: Ching-Shun Yang, he is a couple of years older than me and he was the number 1 ranked player in the world. His mental game is superior; nothing can bring him out of his game and that is what I admire that about him most. Viper: In your opinion, what parts of the world produce the best players? Lu: Taiwan and the Philippines Why: Lu: Not because of talent rather I think it’s because of the equipment. Over in Asia it’s very humid and most pool halls over there have extremely tight tables. So when the big names come over to the US it seems a little easier Viper: Who’s your favorite female pool player? Lu: Alison Fisher, because she is so consistent and a very nice person Viper: Where and when did you first start playing pool? Lu: I was 13 years old, and visited a bookshop that housed a pool table and I was intrigued by the game so I started playing. Viper: What are your biggest accomplishments in the sport of billiards so far in your young career? Lu: In 1998 I won my first WPA world junior 9-ball

championships Viper: Do you currently have any sponsors? Lu: No and I am looking for sponsorships for here in the USA. Later in the spring I plan on coming back and playing in more US events including the US Open. Viper: Did you ever play in a pool league? Lu: NO, they do not exist in Taiwan Viper: Are you good at any other sports? Lu: I started playing baseball in elementary school and got really good at it. Viper: Describe yourself in three words? Lu: Quiet, dedicated and determined Viper: If you had to live your life over again, what would one thing you change about yourself and/or your pool career? (Viper continued on page 30)

Get ready to lock and load and have some fun When you first started out in pocket billiards you were an all offensive player. You went for everything. When you approached the table your purpose was to win. If you go for the win twenty times you will win many games. In fact, the more you go for a win the more you will win. You cannot win a game by playing safe. How about those run and gun shooters?

The Monk

Tim Miller

They have more fun than the conservative player. But you have to know when to go for it. I won’t go for a low percentage bank shot. That is one chance to win and it is a slim one. When I am faced with no shot, I will look at how many balls can I get moving with this one shot? If I can send my object ball into a clump and get some balls rolling, I am tempted to do that. In a very serious match in Wisconsin I ran seven racks of nine ball in a row. On three of those runs I sent balls crashing into other balls just to keep my run going. In other words, I used the “Poke and Hope” style. It was fun and I kept my turn at the table for seven racks. If you develop an aggressive style people will begin to fear you. I won a race to five on all short racks. That is enough to drive an opponent into retirement. He would not shake my hand after the match. When you send an object ball into a cluster you should use force follow (over spin). This puts back spin on the object ball and with the back spin you send the other balls a further distance. Plus the cue ball is turned into a missile as it careens forward in an uncontrolled manner. This type of shooting makes a pure shooter sick. Make sure you have a dumbfounded look on your face when balls drop into the pockets. You are welcome to mutter “how did that happen” as you proceed to run out for the win. Be creative. I had a very makeable four ball in the corner pocket. The nine was on the other end of the table near the rail as a big ball. In other words, it was a thumb width off the rail. I saw that I could bank the four into the rail just before the nine and I’d make the nine. I also saw that I could hide the cue ball behind the seven and separate it from the four ball. This was a chance to win that many players never see. I banked the four, almost made the nine, hung it in the pocket and left him no way to even hit the four ball. So with ball in hand I finished what I started. Most importantly, enjoy the game. Put the fun back into it. In your next tournament play a run and gun type of offense. Lock and load when you go to the table. Smile when balls drop in. I faced a two ball that was in a cluster. All I could see was the edge of the ball so I was looking at an easy safe. I chose to kick the two ball hard. This meant that five balls were going to be sent on their way and two of them dropped in the pocket with one of them being the nine ball. Cock that cue and blast your way to the finals. May all the rolls go your way.

Bob Jewett

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com San Francisco Billiard Academy is a BCA Certified Master Academy.

Double Follow Shots When I was first learning pool, the book I learned from was Willie Mosconi’s “Winning Pocket Billiards.” In the back of the book are some trick shots including some rather remarkable stroke shots that Willie wowed audiences with during his many exhibitions. I didn’t realize that such shots might not be intended for beginners, so I went ahead and learned them even before I could run a rack. Here are two shots that are both amazing (to players who don’t know much about the game) and useful. They are also not that hard to shoot if you’re willing to spin the cue ball and hit it a little harder than the typical shot. I call them “double follow” because they follow to the rail and then they follow back to the same rail.

Plan B for this shot is from Mosconi’s book. If you hit the 4 a little thinner and with no English or a little left English, a little harder, and maybe a little more follow, you can loop the cue ball around the 5-6 and go for the 9 immediately. This is an excellent shot to convince your opponent that either you’re crazy or much better than he thought or both, so it’s really a psychological play. It’s also fun. If you hope to improve your game, you need to increase your comfort zone and learn to make shots you don’t yet enjoy playing. Spending a few minutes with these shots will help do that.

Even as a beginner, I liked to play Shot 1. At nine ball you could play the simple stop shot bank on the 1 ball but that would leave a very tough cut on the 2. If you’re not playing a run-out player, why not try to get shape? Even if you are playing a good player, a safety battle is as likely to leave him with the first good run-out possibility as you. To make the bank reasonable here, the 1 ball needs to be a little off the cushion to avoid the kiss and at an angle where you need to hit slightly on the right side of the 1. Just slightly. Left follow will take the cue ball to the left (from the shooter’s viewpoint) and the follow after the cushion contact will take the cue ball back towards the rail. You might even get a second cushion on the way to shape on the 2. When practicing the shot, first work to get the right action on the cue ball, then worry about mak-ing the bank. You will soon learn the positions that work for both the bank and double follow. Shot 2 comes up far more often. You have an almosthanger that’s by the pocket but with a little angle and you want to leave the cue ball on the cushion for an easy 5-9 combo to win the game. Trying a stop shot either misses the shot or slides too far to the side. You could try a slow roller and pray for a table and a round cue ball. A surer way is to play a double follow with inside (right) English on the cue ball. The English will keep the cue ball from going too far towards the 5 and 6. The long distance between the cue ball and the 4 is actually helpful because the

10 Rackem Magazine - May 2013

Bob Jewett

table will put follow on the cue ball over that distance so as long as you start the cue ball with some follow, it will have plenty by the time it gets to the 4.

CHALK TALK Sponsored by: Master Chalk

Getting Instruction THE SKY IS NO LIMIT I wonder why pool players go against the grain most every time? BY: DON AKERLOW

They don’t get help. If you were studying the martial arts you’d have a sensei, you would have someone teaching you the craft. If you played golf, you would have somebody help you with your swing, with your approach shot, your putting, at least to help you become better than what you are. If you’ve played any sports you know you have a coach. He teaches you, he shows you, makes you practice and do drills that will help you in the long run. Not so with the average pool player, not so with most pool players. It seems to be, in my opinion, an ego thing. For some reason, if we ask for help or go to a billiard school, to have lessons, somehow, we are admitting that we don’t know enough about the game. We’re not good enough, or even worse because somebody is better than us, and God only knows that nobody can be better than we are. This phenomenon seems to stretch across all classes of pool players, whether it’s average barroom pokers or top players. They will practice the drills at times, not the shots that they have a hard time doing or to remember the English and how it takes and where it goes, but they don’t get instructions, and I’m talking about most. There are exceptions of course and those players are to be applauded.

80-90% of how good you shoot. Experience they say is the best teacher. This is true but in order to have quality experience you must practice. In order to practice you must have someone show you or tell you what you are doing incorrectly. Old habits are hard to break, whether it’s with your swing, whether it’s with your stance, whether it’s your mental game or whether it’s how you approach the table, what your routine is, whether it’s the way you stroke your cue, or whether it’s how you hit, whether you stand up. There are numerous things that can go wrong in your game. We’ve all experienced those, so practice, with a qualified instructor or drills. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a start and in my opinion you may need to use more than one instructor. Instructors are human beings and some have strengths in one area or another. You may find that going to another instructor will help you in your game even more. Let me know .... Email pool@onthebreaknews.com .... Subject: Chalk Talk

In my opinion, in order for your game to get better you have to find someone, first that you trust, someone that has accomplished winning, whether its in a local tournament, regional or national. Someone who has been there, done that, been in pressure situations, in the finals. Being able to know the mental game is

Martinez, and Shane Van Boening. Other notable names were Marc Vidal of Spain and Mark Tadd of Utah. All the favorites made it to the final 16 bracket. In the re-draw, Martinez defeated Hundal while Vidal made an upset over Charlie Williams 7-5. Van Boening defeated Moore, Martinez 6-5, and another hill hill thriller over Rodney Morris 6-5. Hundal then shutout Stevie 7-0 while Williams bounced back with 2 more wins to make the final 8. The final day saw Rafael Martinez defeat Williams 7-4 while Morris won over Hundal. Morris then went on to win a tough 7-5 match over Martinez after being down 4-0. He then went on to eliminate Vidal 7-5 who finished 3rd. Notable finishes by non-pro players included 5th place by Ricardo Martinez (unrelated to Rafael), and Bruce Wilson who got 7th. The finals pitted two red hot players in Morris vs Van Boening. Both players went #2 and #1 respectively in the player auction. The match went extremely fast. Morris had beaten Van Boening in the past 5 other tournament. But Van Boening’s break seemed unstoppable, and Morris scraatched the final break giving the match to Shane 7-5. “Bar Box 8-Ball is my all time favorite game,” said Shane. The Wyoming Open also had a second chance Hard Luck 9-Ball event for the players knocked out early.

Qualifies Four Players April 15, 2013 (Englewood, CO): On March 31, the 6th Annual Wyoming Open 8-Ball tournament in Saratoga added two juniors divisions to its event, qualifying four young players to the 2013 BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships. Of the 22 participants who arrived on Easter Sunday, Nebraska brothers Seth and Sheign Krafczik both went undefeated through their respective divisions, earning their spots into Nationals. Also joining them was 10-year-old Kelly Glode, daughter of tournament director/promoter E.J. Glode. This year’s masters division drew many of the top professional players including Shane Van Boening, Stevie Moore, Charlie Williams, Rodney Morris, Raj Hundal, and more. In between matches, Charlie and Rodney showed their support for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) by taking challenge matches to help raise money for the organization. In total, E.J. added $500 to the juniors’ event, between entries into nationals and academic scholarships. Through everyone’s support, the BEF was able to raise over $1,600 for the foundation, “We’re very happy with the turnout and plan to make the juniors’ addition an annual part of our event,” said E.J.

RALLY IN EDISON

TAP – RALLY IN EDISON 2013 – Edison, NJ TAP, LLC has another successful history making event ! Little River, SC, April 18th, 2013 There was electricity in the air, as thousands of eyes were set on watching and playing yet another legendary Dream Team/Singles Rally at Edison event at the NJ Expo Center and for good reason. Players created Dream Team Rosters of TAP players from

all over the USA and Canada. The competition was stiff and it wasn’t black and white who the winners would be in either the 8 ball dream team, 9 ball dream team or 8 ball singles events. Registration started on Wednesday April 3rd in conjunction with the Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo. TAP event staff welcomed players and licensees and provided their badges, programs and information. Registration continued through the 4th, while the TAP National meeting for Licensees and TAP Corporate took place at the Sheraton Edison. On the evening of the 4th, the 8 Ball Singles competition started on 90 Diamond Tables. Players of all skill levels played in the double elimination brackets and continued each evening throughout the weeks’ event. 8 and 9 Ball Dream Team competitions started the morning of the 5th running on high voltage as 180 dream teams played round robin then out to single elimination until its completion on the 7th. Livestreaming by Onsite Pool Network provided a new kind of exposure to a TAP event, that was not provided before. Players at the event and throughout the world could watch the matches in 8, 9 and Singles competition on two tables throughout the extended weekend. Commentating, scores, interviews and information were provided in High Definition and speeds of all types to accommodate different cellphones, tablets and Singles 7 - 8 Ball Champio n laptops. Brandon Ashcraft, MI McDermott Handcrafted Cues, TAP’s Cue Sponsor,

Sharkin U Apparel once again provided sales of their popular demand apparel line and provided gift packages to each of the singles event winners. TAP Apparel showcased their new line of apparel, event shirts and the TAP Online store as well as their new full line of customized products they can do for TAP Players and their Licensees. As a vendor, the TAP Sales and information booth had a busy 4 days as well, at this year’s Super Billiard Expo and TAP’s Rally event. The people that stopped by to ask about Singles 5 - 8 Ball Champio n bringing TAP into their area Paul Caivano, NJ seemed to be charged up, serious and interested even more than in the past years, which has been greatly successful. People spoke of being tired of their league that they are now in and feel TAP is the better choice for them and their players. At this time, one contract in New England has been signed and another in New York is expected shortly. Many of the people gathered information and advertising to take back and talk to their players to see how much interest is there before they committed but more new licensees are expected in the coming months. Most, if not all, were very optimistic that players in their area want a change. With events like the Rally Dream Team events, TAP hosting our nationals by traveling to all parts of the United States plus the overall TAP format, Pool-Net software and other features of what TAP offers their members it seems to be just what they are looking for in a league. So the Event and the Competition throughout the event was impressive. Several “on the hill” matches were played by pion Singles 2/3 - 8 Ball Cham all. TABLE TALK Live Streaming

BY: DON AKERLOW

Personally I think live streaming is the best thing to happen to pool since “The Color of Money”. We are still in the infancy of live streaming. The first time I saw it on my computer was in the summer of 2007. I was amazed. I was sitting in my house, in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, in Montana and I was watching two players in Olathe, Kansas playing pool for thousands of dollars. How cool could this be? It was almost like watching a movie. The commentary was more in the lines of people talking in a pool hall than a movie script but that was fine. I grew up in a pool hall. I’m not here critiquing that quality. I am mystified by the lack of viewership. As the summer of 2013 approaches, its been six years. The commentary has come from entertaining to professional and that’s a good thing. The quality of the stream for some has become excellent. Yet the number of viewers are still down. If you use percentages you may be up 10% or 20% and maybe more. When you start with only a few hundred viewers to possibly one to two thousand that seems great if you are live streaming. I have. I have gotten as low as and as high as these numbers. I’m not speaking of the live streamers in any negative way. We have worked for nothing or next to it. Sometimes the only payment is a handshake and thank you or someone saying, “This is really cool, man!” We try to get sponsors, advertisers or logos on the live stream. Commercials inside the live stream and it is a rough road to travel. There’s the travel to, the set up, making sure the internet has enough upload speed, test the audio, check your cameras and no matter how many times you do this something can always go wrong. So before you start your show you cross your fingers. Then there is the countless number of hours, usually 12+ per day that you are on the air. Kudos to all the live streamers. Clearly its not all about the money. To me it was always about the numbers. We do not get the numbers even the pros. Shows on cable have been cancelled because they only have a viewership of 150,000. Imagine any live streamer getting that kind of numbers! On our Ustream page we show a viewership of over one million but the numbers don’t match up. The statistical analysis that is offered by Ustream doesn’t match the viewership numbers displayed on the home page they are putting out. Imagine if you will a live streamer, any live streamer, taking the total number of viewers that you would get from a weekend of live streaming, anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 and that would be what you would see at any given time watching the live streaming! Whether it would be a league national championship, the U. S. Open or any $5,000 added pool tournament. Where are the viewers? If you are reading this and you have never seen a live streaming, go to Ustream.tv, search words, “billiards, pool” and find two or three live streamings and make it your favorite. And don’t forget to watch the challenge matches too. There are some pay for view matches that are excellent. We have to get the numbers up if this is to grow. Watch - just watch. It may not be ESPN but take the time to watch. We welcome your comments. pool@onthebreaknews.com Subject line: Table Talk

Thomas and Lee Capture LSBT Titles

On April 20th-21st, 2013, Houston player Brent Thomas fought his way through a treacherous field of 41 top contenders in order to capture his first Lone Star Open 9-Ball division title at Bogies Billiards & Sports Bar. In town for upcoming nuptials, Swiss pro Marco Tsudi, along with cohorts Patrick Werren, Oliver Heeb, and Jonny Stojanovic, amplified an already intense field. Thomas’ impressive run yielded 6 consecutive wins with exceptional victories over Tschudi, 9-7, and Joey Torres, 9-6. Euro Tour player Patrick Werren made his play for the hot seat as well, with wins over Bob Guzik, 9-8, and Blaine Barcus, 9-8. After a 9-2 loss at the hands of Blaine Barcus, Killeen’s Eric Brown tore through the one-loss side eliminating Brian Rosenbaum, 7-3, Victoria’s Durango Duran, 7-6, Torres, 7-6, and Tsudi, 7-6. On the east side, Thomas and Werren teed off for the hot seat. A seasoned Thomas continued his steady stream of play which proved too much for the 19 year-old, Swiss phenom. Thomas secured the hot seat, 9-3, and Brown made quick work of Werren on the one-loss side, 7-1. Thomas found a more than formidable counterpart in Brown. As Thomas struggled with a few unforced errors, Brown’ momentum increased, as he drove it home, 9-5. In the second set, Thomas found his footing and came out firing, taking an early 5-2 lead. Brown continued to lose contention, as his answers came all too late. A confident Thomas pulled out of sight to end the match, 7-4. Danny Lee took the 56 player Amateur 9-Ball division by storm with wins over Eric Hsu, 7-4, Daniel Johnson, 7-3, and Raul Escobedo, 7-3. Eric Brown, the Open division runner-up, showed true resolve and stamina as he blazed a trail through Mark Fusina, 7-4, Lance Sullivan, 7-5, and finally Victor Rojas, 7-6, to reach Lee and his second hot seat match. In the wake of their destruction, it was Sullivan who emerged on the west side, winning 4 consecutive matches to face Victoria’s Alex Cardenas who won an astounding 6 consecutive matches after a 3rd round loss to Joey Torres. Cardenas would make Sullivan his 6th and final victim by a score of 5-3. On the east side, Brown lost the hot seat to Lee and in turn, eliminated Cardenas. Brown played a spectacular first match, becoming the first person to defeat Lee in the event, 7-4. Lee came back to win the second set and his first Lone Star Amateur title. Teresa Garland took home “Top Lady” in the Open division and split the same award with DANNY LEE Angela Martinez in the Amateur division. Junior players Joey Bourgeois, Jr. from Pasadena, Texas and Joey Torres of Houston, Texas cashed in the top 12 and also split the “Top Junior” award. Bogies Billiards & Sports Bar in Houston, Texas hosted another fine event, with 61 players in attendance and $1,000 added. Sponsors for this event included the Official Cue, Poison by Predator www.poisonbilliards.com, the Official Rack, Delta-13 Rack www.delta-13.com, and the APA Leagues of North Harris County. The next event will be at Houston’s Sports Bar in Houston, Texas on May 4th-5th.

Lucky

BY: ANDREW MONSTIS

Lucky About Life: PART 3 I drove back from Kansas to Lucky’s Ranch. The drive was long so we started a conversation about life. We in a deep conversation covered what seemed to be a scratch on the surface. I said “Life travels across vast knowledge. What we pick up along the way is based on what we previously know and want to know or believe, which makes it limited to our own sphere of the world. In today’s world, everyone seems to know everything, so they say how can one not be informed. We all want to feel that we know it all and our opinion is upmost, Most of that is an illusion”……..

fun. Most of my discovery was that Lucky was so knowledgeable. I had 8 years of College and Lucky never went to college and knew so much. He spent time reading and consciously teaching himself and not relying on just beliefs that everyone one else might have. He had so much more substance that playing pool and reading people. The world of pool has changed the romantic era of pool should never be forgotten because as knowledge is our predecessors made pool better through each year. Pool would not have the identity without champions like Ralph Greenleaf, Willie Hoppe Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras, Mike Sigel’s and Efren Reyes’s. Or the Hustlers Minnesota Fats, Ronnie Allen, Cornbread Red.

Lucky had so much more substance than playing pool and reading people.

Lucky believes “that there are two ways to look at how the world develops: the first is through the progress of history and human civilization, and the second is through the progress of knowledge and human understanding”…… Knowledge moves when intake of information is greater than any previous generation? We are bombarded with words and ideas, pictures and concepts. The classic example is that we once believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Everyone was told that. The religious thought kept knowledge from progressing. This notion has rarely publicly questioned for centuries. Eventually one becomes compels to ask the question: why? Most of us do this in everyday life. And I am no different.

It was a game of nobles now everyone play at it. The word “pool” means a collective bet, or ante. Many non-billiard games, such as poker, involve a pool but it was to pocket billiards that the name became attached. The term “poolroom” now means a place where pool is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Pool tables were installed so patrons could pass time between races. The two became connected in the public mind, but the unsavory connotation of “poolroom” came from the betting that took place there, not from billiards.

We spent time establishing what we did know or thought we knew. This whole conversation was

Get a Grip We Salute You!

BY: SHARI ROSS

It seems I have hit some nerves but at least people are finally taking note of what I am saying. I want to make it very clear I am pointing out problems and possible solutions to these problems so we may elevate our sport not calling out individuals for public crucifixion. So to change it up a little I would like to use this month to recognize and thank the people who keep pool alive. Whether it be volunteering at an event, hosting one, running a league or streaming tournaments, without these people we are extinct. Last month I made reference to our regional BCA event as an area that needs some tending to, the key word being some. This is also a place where many people give up time everyday to set up and put on these events, most of which wear several hats. If you haven’t been to the website, www.westernbca. org, you many not know how many people it takes to put on these events and that they are always in need of more bodies. From the president all the way down to the raffle girls everyone is a volunteer, except for the refs. I’m pretty sure you can figure out that this doesn’t come together over night, when I said

everyday I meant exactly that. They do this not for the glory, but for a true love of the game. These are generally thankless jobs so please let me say thank you. This of course doesn’t just apply to the BCA but to any league or tour, amateur or professional.

Then we have our league operators and division managers, the nuts and bolts of the leagues, without them we can’t qualify to play in regional or national events. Sometimes it seems we take them for granted or maybe just don’t understand what all they do. Someone has to set up the places we play and what night, make the schedule, print score sheets, record and submit scores, take entries and confirm eligibility for tournaments, and be up to date on rules and regs. to keep their players informed, and that is just the tip of their iceberg. I would like to thank all of them individually but as I don’t have all their names I guess a general thanks will have to do. However I would like to say a personal thank you to my operators and manager for all they do, Ford, Chris, Rose and Elaine you guys rock! If you haven’t said it to yours now

is as good a time as any. So many people give their time for little or no money so we can play and compete and we need to start being aware of and grateful for what they do. Hopefully in the near future we can change the standing of billiards so we may better pay and hire those qualified, maybe even get the players more involved too. For one last time let me say thank you for all you do. Do stand, take a bow and pat yourselves on the back, if you don’t have someone to do, cause you deserve at least that. I would like to thank those of you who have replied with your thoughts and opinions on last months issue and look forward to hearing from more of you. Do you have a topic you would like to see covered? Please submit those as well as replies. I am interested in the good the bad and some of the ugly, as long as no one gets hurt. If you expect better then give your best!

Lu: I really liked Rodney Morris, when I was a kid I got to watch him in action and he was unbeatable in Taiwan. Viper: How do you prepare for events? Lu: I listen to my music on my iPod and practice for a few hours per day. I work on my break and play the ghost. I like to listen to American hip-hop music – Lady Ga Ga Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given? Lu: The National Coach for the Taiwanese team told me once growing up to not ever worry about the score and try to stay relaxed as much as possible.

Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool? Lu: I love everything about competing especially when I am winning. Viper: If you could say one thing to a young up-coming player what would it be? Lu: Make sure you have enough time to practice and analyze your game so you can learn your mistakes. Don’t make the same mistake twice. Try your best not to focus your attention on winning and losing. Viper: What’s your Favorite game? Lu: 10-ball because it’s so much more challenging then 9-ball. A special “Thank-you” to Lu Hui Chan for taking time out of his travelling schedule to participate in my Ask the Viper. Till next month you can find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wpbaviper

Sharky’s Billiards

Chad Vilmont The 2012-2013 Pure X Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – produced its twenty-third stop of the Tour year at Sharky’s Billiards in Davenport, IA, Saturday, March 23. The $500-added 8-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 36 players. Jesse Bowman (E. Moline, IL) [rated a “7” on a regional handicapping system used} was on his usual fine form on this day, as he marched undefeated to the hot seat, topped off with a semifinals win over Colin Brandt [4] (Rock Island, IL) 7-2 and a finals victory over Chad Vilmont [7] (Clinton, IA) 7-4. Also in the semis, Vilmont had clipped Ronnie Martin [6] (E. Moline, IL) 7-5. On the B-side, Larry Newell [5] (Clinton, IA) and Anthony Garcia [6] (Cedar Rapids, IA) eliminated Justin Moris [5] (Dubuque, IA) 5-3 and Scott Hargens [6] (Cedar Rapids, IA) 6-5 respectively at 7th place. In the next round, both Newell and Garcia placed 5th by being on the wrong side of scores with Colin Brandt [4] 1-4 and Ronnie Martin [6] 4-6 respectively. Ronnie Martin then relegated Colin Brandt to 4th place by a 6-3 margin. In the B-side finals, Martin fell short on the hill to Chad Vilmont 5-7. Vilmont then succeeded in double-dipping Jesse Bowman in the tourney finals to claim the title! Ronnie Martin was the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 8-Ball singles entry into the 2013 Pure X ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas.

The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Pure X Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Pure X All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2012/2013 All American Tour by contacting the ACS. For information contact the ACS at info@americancuesports.org.
