WOMEN’S 9-BALL Shane Van Boening Shane VanBoening beat Johann Chua, a rising young star from the Philippines, to win the Super Billiards Expo for the sixth time in the last 10 years. His winning years: 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014,2017. In 2012, 2013, and 2014 his EXPO wins were followed by victories in the US 9-Ball Open. I am working on a compilation of my columns for Pool & Billiard, and I am happy to say that Van Boening is featured in four of them. LoreeJon Hasson, 51, has come out of retirement to win the Super Billiards Expo, beating New York City pro Jennifer Barretta in the finals.. LoreeJon began training hard 6 months ago and, in that time, has elevated her game to where she can compete with, and beat, the top pros in America. LoreeJon’s play is a testament to hard work, a championship attitude, and great fundamentals! I have long admired the way she plays – especially her shooting routine, position play, and the professional approach she takes with every shot. I am now working on my second 250 columns for P&B and I am thinking of doing one on her game. — Article by Philip Capelle on Facebook

The Psychology of Pool DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH

Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. You can learn more about Dr Stankovich and Mind of Steel by visiting drstankovich.com

DEVELOP CONFIDENCE FOR SUCCESS IN POOL! Confidence truly is king when it comes to athletic success. Confident pool players constantly look to dominate their opponents and “play to win,” while players lacking confidence consistently underachieve, choke, and play to “avoid losing.” When you are confident in your pool playing abilities, your mind and body become synchronized and you get into Flow (or as athletes refer to it, “the Zone”). Confident players don’t pay attention to things that don’t matter (the opponent, the fans, the last missed shot, etc), and instead channel their complete energy into the only thing that is important – the next shot. Confidence also impacts perception – for example, say you took 10 shots and made 5 and missed 5. A confident player will stay focused and positive, whereas a player with less confidence will get angry, frustrated, and inevitably miss more future shots. The good news is you control your self confidence! To begin with, make sure to have a positive attitude every time you pick up your cue. Positive emotions and attitudes have a tremendous impact on self-confidence! The great news is YOU control your emotions and attitude, so be sure to stay positive everyday. This game is tough enough without you being your own worst enemy!

MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Streaming in HD on any device 24/7/365

Dr. Chris Stankovich DRSTANKOVICH.CINEVEE.COM OnTheBreakNews.com

Some additional tips for building self-confidence are presented below: • Practice with a purpose. Work on mastering the basic skills until you can do them without thinking – to the point where they become automatic. More shots made = greater self-confidence • Make pool mastery a personal challenge. Is the glass half-full or half-empty? The perception you have is as individual as you are. Whenever you play pool you are going to make some shots and miss others – the real question is what will you focus on at the end of the day? If you are challenged to get better every day you will always look to build on the future by challenging yourself to get better every day! • Look to learn something new every day. By improving at the small details of pool (i.e. getting into pinpoint position), you will make more shots and improve your confidence level. • Laugh. Life is short enough, so you might as well enjoy as much of it as you can! Sometimes you have to just break down your stick, smile, and promise to make tomorrow a better day than today. Remember, it’s not the end of the world when you miss a shot (or lose a game), and the sun really will come up tomorrow! • Keep a journal of your success. If you think you will remember the last time you played great pool, think again. I’ll bet you can’t even remember what you had for lunch yesterday, much less that great tournament you played in 6 months ago! Trust me, if you want to feel good nothing beats a quick re-read of one of your best all-time games! Confidence is king, and you control your confidence level! Think like a champion and one day you may become one – good luck!

I would like to hear from you. If you have a question for me please submit to: information@drstankovich.com

SINKIN’ THE MONEY BALL

by Tom Simpson © July 2006 – All Rights Reserved – PoolClinics.com In most games, there is a moment when we face the gamewinning (or game-losing shot) – the “money ball”. In Eight Ball and Nine Ball, obviously it’s shooting the 8 or the 9. We’ve been there a thousand times, and it’s not always pretty.

May 2017

Because making this one shot matters so much, and because the ball just sits there waiting for us to decide we’re ready, we have opportunities to get ourselves in trouble. We think of the money shot as something different from the other shots, and the pressure begins to rise. We allow the pressure to influence how we approach the shot, how we feel about it, and how we shoot it. And guess what? We start to see it as a different shot. It doesn’t look like it would if it was just a “regular shot”. The pressure to make it, and the potential embarrassment if we don’t, distract us from the task at hand. We get tied up with issues of winning and losing, fear of missing an easy shot and looking like we succumbed to the pressure, self-consciousness because we feel the judging gaze of the railbirds. We desperately try to avoid choking – and of course that causes us to choke. This is a huge, multi-faceted problem, one we’re all too familiar with. We’ve all missed game-winning hangers. We all face the money ball challenge – hopefully frequently. Psychotherapy is expensive, takes too long, and will have our opponents poking fun at us (causing even more stress and pressure). So, what practical steps can we take to deal with those pesky money balls? Here are a few tips: 1. Don’t break your rhythm. We tend to shoot best with a particular cadence (a series of counts or beats that coincide with the various stages of our shooting routine). We also shoot with a certain tempo (how quickly or slowly our cadence runs). How everything works together for good timing and good results is our rhythm. It’s OK to slow your tempo for pressure shots, but don’t change the action sequence of your cadence. In other words, try to shoot the money ball just like any other ball. Play basic, easy position. Don’t hesitate, don’t give it special consideration, don’t do anything different.

Rack’em

OnTheBreakNews.com

2. No speed, no spin. OK, you’ve broken your rhythm and the anxiety is mounting. You still have to make the ball. On money ball shots, all you have to do is make the shot and not scratch. On every shot except the money ball shot, you have to control Angle, Speed, and Spin. This is why the game is difficult. But now, on the money ball, all you need to control is cut angle. Put all of your focus on cutting the ball, use no unnecessary spin, and shoot at your natural speed. Your natural speed is the speed your body shoots if you’re not thinking about speed; the speed you shoot with your eyes closed. 3. Cinch the shot. Now, you’re hoping your opponent doesn’t see your hand shaking. You’re so clenched up, you’ve lost any fluidity you once had. You don’t trust your stroke. OK, let’s just make the ball. To cinch the shot, take the shortest bridge you can (maybe 4” of stroking room). Put your tip very close to the cueball, so you can see exactly where you’re going to hit. Now take an insanely short stroke (maybe 2”) and sink that ball. You won’t have room to go off line, and with the short stroke, your opponent won’t be able to see you quaking. 4. Back away. You’re down on the shot, and your head is filled with chatter and doubt. You’re not confident. Something is telling you you’re likely to miss. STOP and back away. It’s less costly and embarrassing than missing. Take a lap of the table. Go wipe down your shaft. Take a couple of deep breaths. Whatever; let some time pass, and allow the adrenaline to drain out of your brain. Approach the shot, walking in on the shot line, from as far away as possible. As you approach, stay focused on the shot line. Settle softly down into the shot. It’s just you and the balls. 5. Own the shot. Run the shot in your imagination. To give yourself the best chance to make it, you have to want it. You have to expect it. You have to believe it. Don’t shoot if you’re not ready. Yeah, this is easier to say than to do. What can I tell you? Figure it out. If this game was easy, we wouldn’t be such fanatics about it.

THE “HALF MOON” SHOT This month I am going to momentarily step away from “useful trick shots” and show you one of the finest set-up shots ever. I had the honor of learning it directly from its creator, my friend and legendary pool champion, Yoshikazu Kimura. He called it “The Half Moon Shot”, obviously due to the shape of the displayed balls on the table. This shot is mainly based on “Tangent Lines”. A tangent line is the line that runs perpendicular to the “Line of Centers”. This latter one is the line we can draw between the centers of two frozen balls.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s start by laying down our cue right in the middle of the table, along the blue dotted line X. Then let’s place the 1-ball (the yellow one) at one ball distance to the right of our cue, along line Y. That is where it all starts from. Take the 2-ball (the blue one) and place it frozen to the 1-ball, making sure their tangent line aims for the side E-pocket. I drew the tangent lines as black dotted lines and the actual trajectory of the object balls as solid lines of the same color as their respective ball. Then take the 3-ball (the red one) and place it frozen to the 2-ball with their tangent aiming for the right F line point of corner pocket F. Place the 4-ball (the pink one) frozen to the 3-ball and with their tangent line aiming for the right point of corner pocket A. Lastly, place the 5-ball (the orange one) frozen to the 4-ball but this time with their line of centers aiming for the left point of corner pocket C, to allow for the “throw”. With the cue ball on the spot, using a 6 o’clock, half-a-tip, 2.5-speed stroke E (basically a stop-shot), hit the 1-ball full. Very likely you will pocket 5 balls in 5 different pockets in a very impressive way! Thank you, Mr. Kimura!

How good are you at clearing up clusters as part of your you to adjust the angle with side spin so you can hit a very runs? If you have room for improvement here are a couple wide range of spots on the rail and still get to the 7-8. A of quick exercises to help get you there. These are examples main disadvantage of that path is that your side spin has to from nine ball but the principles apply to all games. be right. In Shot 1 ignore the 1 ball for the time being. You have ball If you encounter a problem breaking out clusters in a match, in hand on the 2 ball and have to deal with the 3-4 cluster make a note of it and work on it later on the practice table. immediately. If you’re on the correct side of the 2 (as shown) The best exercises are based on shots you have trouble with it’s almost impossible to avoid moving the 3-4. The problem in competition. One last suggestion: Dealing with clusters is to get a shot on the 3 ball after you hit it. So that you like these requires more finesse than power. If you go at these can reset the position exactly several times, use donut paper like you’re killing snakes you’ll likely get snake bit. reinforcements or tap the balls into place. I think you will have the best result by landing nearly full on the 3 ball, but try the shot several times and see what works for you. I’ll guess that if you land on the 4 ball you will end up snookered on the 3 ball a lot B of the time. While you’re at it, find both the easiest angle to work with for the shot on the 2 ball and the range 1 of angles that you can make work even if they 2 require more care or precision. As a goal, try to run all three balls five out of ten tries. Next, add the 1 ball so that you have to play position on the 2 for the break-out. How often 4 3 Shot 1 can you do the 4-ball run starting with ball in A hand? Can you deal with cue ball positions on the 2 ball such as A (when you have run past the position you wanted)? Right follow may get you to B and then to the 3-4 but of course the landing on the 3 is much tougher to control. Shot 2 is a little more complicated. (Ignore the 5 to start with.) You have to come off a cushion to get to the 7-8 so now the shot will require the 5 correct amount of side spin as well as some draw. D F Find the ball-in-hand position that works best for you as well as the range of positions that you can make work. Now, add the 5 ball to the problem. You have ballin-hand on the 5. The first part is to play position off the 5 to get your favorite angle on the 6. You will probably find that it’s dangerous to play to 7 have the cue ball as close as in the diagram and 8 that you’re better off being about as far back as C even though that makes the shot harder. Try for a total of three successful runs of the 4 balls to get a feel for the sequence. Shot 2 A good alternative for the 5-6-7-8 problem is to use the 5 to break apart the 7-8 immediately with position on the 6 ball. There are two ways to do that. The first is to go straight from the 5 to the 7- 8 playing with follow into pocket F or draw into pocket D. The second way is to go off the 6 C end cushion at about C and approach the balls from below. A main advantage of using the REJ second path is that the cushion allows

our brain’s behavior if we use the right means of communication. Let me give you some examples: • That feeling you get when you hear your favorite song on the radio. • The use of certain colors in their marketing of a particular product can also trigger a mood. • A certain smell can also evoke a mood (a smoky pool room) or remind you of a previous success or failure. • Your past performance at a particular tournament can also make you feel more confident or fearful about that same event in the future. The key to confidence is for players develop an NLP plan. Instead of leaving these powerful mood changing triggers to chance, good players design a program for themselves. And studies have shown that this actually works!

Some days players can just walk up to the table and “feel it” and on other days they don’t. What if you could trigger confidence whenever you wanted it? If you have ever lacked confidence this article is for you. In pool, success is highly dependent on mental side of the game, what kind of “attitude” you display directly influences how you are going to perform. A positive outlook produces straighter strokes. This alone can explain fluctuations in a player’s ability to perform from match to match. So why do you feel more confident on some days than you do on others? The fact is that there are indeed “confidence triggers” which get you into a particular mindset or mood. Conversely, there are also certain negative triggers, which produce the opposite effect. Most triggers are unconscious (in other words you don’t know exactly what they are, but they do play a role in how you perform). In this article, I’d like to show you some ways that you can consciously “program” those triggers to produce a more confident mindset using a technique that is referred to as NLP. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help us “program”

The 5 Triggering Mechanisms: • Verbal (words or self-talk) • Visual (colors, symbols or images) • Auditory (sound) • Kinesthetic (touch) • Smell Players tend to all respond differently to each of the various triggers, so this is something you will have to experiment with. To be successful, you will want to associate a particular mood or feeling with one of the triggers above. Then you can use that trigger to help reproduce that same feeling/mood. The more that feeling/ experience is anchored, the more powerful the trigger will become. First, recall a time when you were successful at a tournament or during match play. Think about every detail as precisely as you can. See yourself walking confidently between each shot and try to remember how you felt when you were going through your pre-shot routine. Then “drop the anchor” when your memory of that feeling is strongest. You can also do this at any time during match play when you feel success. Examples of ways to drop the anchor include: • Describing the experience with a certain word e.g. “stroking” or “dead stroke” • Associating that word with a certain color or a symbol. • Using a sound to connect it to which you’ll be able to use at the table, like snapping your fingers or tapping your cue against the floor. With reinforcement, these anchors will get stronger and will help you trigger more confident feelings whenever the need arises. You can also incorporate them into your pre-shot routine this will definitely help you get in the mood to play your very best.

Torres & Charles Annihilate

J.C. TORRES J.C. Torres took the open 9-ball division by storm, going undefeated to win his first title on the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. Torres bested Brian Rosenbaum, 7-4, in the first set of the true, double elimination final, to claim his first-ever, tour victory. In the amateur 9-ball division, Pete Charles found himself face-to-face with J.C. Torres in the final match, who had the opportunity to do what only one player has accomplished in the 9-year history of the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour; win both divisions at the same event. Unfortunately for Torres, an undefeated Charles took the first set, 5-3, along with Torres’ chance to break the 9-year record. On April 1st-2nd, 2017, Bogies West in Houston, Texas, along with tour title sponsor Poison by Predator Cues (PoisonBilliards.com), and sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls (facebook@CyclopPoolBalls), Ozone Billiards (OzoneBilliards. com), APA of North Harris County (facebook@APANorthHarrisCounty), OutsvilleBilliards.com, and Realtor Jimmy Jenkins, facilitated another successful event for the players of the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. Open and amateur 9-ball division action kicked-off Saturday afternoon, and brought back the final 16 on Sunday. In the open 9-ball division, Eric Charlton was on his way with wins over Viet Do, 7-1, Justin Pena, 7-6, and Matt Cash, 7-0, while Pete Charles defeated John Newsome, 7-2, Bobby Perez, 7-5, and Justin Pena, 6-4. Steve Williams bested Brian Rosenbaum, 7-5, Jesus Sorto, 7-4, and Jerry Cook, 7-3, while J.C. Torres ousted Chuck Adams, 7-1, Aldo Rosso, 7-1, and Yogi

Salinas, 7-1. On the one loss side, Rosso was eliminated by Cash, and Rosenbaum blew past Justin Pena, 7-4. Final four winners’ side action witness Charlton defeat Charles, 7-4, while Torres overcome Williams, 7-5. The hot seat match was a hillhill thriller, with Torres capturing his first hot seat win in the open division, 7-6. On the west side, Williams eliminated Rosso, 7-4, and Rosenbaum ended Charles, 7-2. Rosenbaum went on to defeat Williams, 7-3, and Charlton, reaching his first open division final. Both Torres and Rosenbaum were vying for first-time wins, and following a grueling day of match play, both players were feeling the strain. They traded game for game, until Torres pulled ahead to close the set, 7-4, winning his first Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour division title! In the amateur division, Pete Charles logged wins over Erik Renteria, Shane Thompson, 5-2, and Yogi Salinas, 5-1, while Steve Williams ousted Chuck Adams, 5-0, Jimmy Jenkins, 5-1, and Jerry Cook, 5-2. Bobby Perez came on strong with wins over Kane Thompson, 5-1, Matt Cash, 5-3, and Bill Fuller, 5-4, while J.C. Torres defeated Thomas Madison, 5-3, David Taylor, 5-3, and Eric Charlton, 5-2. As the final four on the winners’ side took shape, the one-loss side was heating up. Reaching the final four on the one loss side, Charlton eliminated Chris Rocha, 5-4, while Justin Pena ended brother, Jacob Pena, 5-4, and Fuller, 5-2. Newcomer Jesus Sorto dominated Aldo Rosso, 5-2, but lost to Yogi Salinas 5-2. After losing to Fuller in the third round, 5-4, Rosenbaum found his rhythm, eliminating Viet Do, Matt Cash, 5-1, and Jerry Cook, 5-3. It was down to the final eight, and winners’ side final four action was underway. Charles took care of Williams, 5-2,

Poison Lone Star Tour PETE CHARLES while Torres dominated Perez, 5-0. Torres put up a tough fight for the hot seat, but was taken down by Charles, 5-3. Back on the west side, Pena eliminated Williams, 5-3, and Rosenbaum scored his fifth straight win over Perez, 5-3. Pena ended Rosenbaum’s run, 5-2, but fell to a determined Torres, 5-2. The final match was an all-too familiar scene for Torres, with Charles taking the lead following a couple of unforced errors. Charles closed out the final set, 5-3, clenching his second, Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour, amateur division victory. The tour would like to recognize its 2017 sponsors and venues: Poison by Predator Cues, Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, Outsville Billiards, and Realtor Jimmy Jenkins. This year, the tour welcomes back Texas venues Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar (Houston), Bogies West (Houston), Skinny Bob’s Billiards (Round Rock), and brand new venues, Fat Racks Sports Bar and Billiards (San Antonio), and CK Billiards (Dallas). Without the nearly 300 players who attend Poison Lone Star Tour events, annually, production of this tour would not be possible. The tour would like to thank each and every player for their participation, whether it’s one event, or every event year round. It is because of your patronage, that the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour celebrates its 9th birthday this year, serving players across Texas and in surrounding states. Following a short players’ meeting, action kicked off around noon, and Eaton made her way with wins over Teresa Garland, 7-5, and Tiffany Mundie, 7-4, while Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce ousted Joyce Davis, Terry “The Terrorizer” Petrosino, 7-3, and Natalie Rocha, 7-5. Petrosino, 5-3, amassing seven straight wins before meeting Eaton in the finals. In the final match, Petrosino hit the ground running, commanding a 6-4 lead, applying pressure, while Eaton maintained composure. At 6-4, a seemingly decent safety on the 7-ball turned into a long-rail bank for Eaton. The bank was executed successfully, and led to a shift in momentum that propelled Eaton to victory, by a score of 7-6. Kamui No Master 8-Ball Tournament

Chase Maurer

The Kamui No Master 8-Ball Tournament this weekend at Big Dog Billiards in Des Moines, IA turned out to be our best non master event to date! We filled the event with 128 players from all over the midwest, including players traveling to Des Moines from 6 different states. As usual, we saw a lot of new faces enter this event. It’s always great to meet first time participants! I think they will agree when I say, they’ll be back again for future events held here at Big Dog’s. The first day went very smooth, with 208 matches played on 21 7’ Diamond tables. Credit for this goes to the players, as they were great about being on time, and also reporting match results immediately. Vey much appreciated! We were able to get down to the final 32 at a very reasonable time, which allowed everyone to unwind from the long grind of day 1.

The 10th Annual Wyoming Open Pool Tournament held at the Platte Valley Community Center in Saratoga, WY on March 31-April 2, 2017 saw a maximum capacity field of strong shooters compete for nearly $45,000 in prize and calcutta money! The $10,000 added money event drew over 374 entries that filled the Masters 10-ball (32), Masters Saratoga (32), Masters 8-ball (32), Expert 8-ball (80), Classic 8-ball (80), Sportsman 8-ball (32), Women’s Only 8-ball (24), Hard Luck 9-ball (32) divisions and 30 youth in the juniors 8-ball event!! There were 40 more entries than the year before thanks in large part to the social media promoting by Charlie Williams and Dragon Promotions!! This tournament filled up 11 days after fliers were first posted and within 12 days after that there were 71 people on the waiting list! There was only supposed to be 64 players in both the Classic and Expert Divisions and 16 in the Women’s Only event but after seeing the overwhelming response and hearing the disappointment of many players that were only on the waiting list Tournament Promoter, EJ Glode, and Tournament Director, Monte Thayer, decided to add 8 tables to the mix at “the eleventh hour” that created 40 more available

(SBE) in Philadelphia, PA which didn’t allow several of the professional players who would’ve liked to have competed in both tournaments to do so because of sponsorship obligations. Monte Thayer explained that Allen Hopkins had to change his normal dates because of location availability, which generally falls two weeks earlier, to the same scheduled dates as the Wyoming Open and by the time this was discovered it was too late to change the Wyoming Open dates. When EJ Glode started this tournament 10 year ago never in his wildest dreams did he think that he would have to worry about scheduling conflicts with a professional tournament (SBE) in far away Philadelphia, PA!! Anyway, we have coordinated dates so that we do not fall on the same weekend as the SBE next year and we’re expecting many more professionals! With the expected increased attendance ideas and creativity are already being put to work to tackle the next problem of creating more space for lodging for players, family and spectators because, according to Tournament Promoter and Mayor of Saratoga, WY, EJ Glode, the town was Corey Deuel 1st in Masters 10-ball, Saratoga & 8-ball “booked out” for lodging this year! This year players and spectators, once again, spots to accommodate got treated to some world class pool playing performed by the professionals many of the late sign and other Masters and Expert players - the type of pool rarely seen in person ups who were only in the Rocky Mountain region including a free trick shot exhibition by world on the waiting list. champion Mike Now it’s time, once Massey! There were again, for this event several people who to grow and next year drove hundreds of this tournament will miles that didn’t become a four-day even play in the event with the Masters tournament but Division 10-ball just came to spend tournament starting time in Saratoga, on Thursday night WY and to enjoy and all other divisions the spectacular play starting early on and the camaraderie Friday morning. of the professionals According to who graciously took Tournament Director, pics and signed Monte Thayer, there autographs all is very little more weekend long. A space for tables in special thanks to this small town of On The Rail TV and Mike Massey, Eddie Vonderau 1st Jr PeeWees, Rodney Morris Lenny Marshall for LeAnn Dunlap 1st/Rebecca Thunstrom 2nd in Women’s 8-Ball 1,800 people so we can’t grow by tables taking this event from the beautiful small town of Saratoga, WY with only so we must to grow by days! Running 374 entries through both preliminary 1,800 residents across the globe with the live on-line streaming. Also, a very and finals brackets in just over two days creates a little too much congestion special thanks goes to the signature tournament sponsor Andy Billiard Cloth and since we’re planning on increasing all of the fields next year and most whose consistent great cloth was on every tournament table! Also, Rasson likely the added money then we have to increase by time. This year the Tables who last year donated a beautiful new 7’ pool table, Aramith Balls Wyoming Open dates conflicted with Allen Hopkins’ Super Billiard Expo who donated new top shelf pool balls for this tournament, and McDermott

WITH THREE more events played on the USA Mosconi Cup ranking, it’s that man again as Shane Van Boening once again tops the list after winning the Pro Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo. That’s brings the total of events played up to seven as the South Dakota Kid looks to make his 11thappearance in the event. Despite missing the World Pool Series events in New York for personal reasons, Dennis Hatch stays in the upper echelons as he looks to make his fifth appearance in the Mosconi Cup. This year it’s about finishing in the top ten once the 16th and final event has been played out in early September. That’s when USA skipper Johan Ruijsink will be making his picks from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance. There is a new West Coast event added to the roster and that is: June 23/25 – Pac-West Invitational – Portland, OR 9’ tables/maximum of 64 players/$10,000 added/Grade: One As bracket size is limited to 64, players should contact Carissa Biggs at carissabiggs@gmail.com asap. Due to a change in the format and scheduling of the World Pool Series events, players who gain points in both the main event and the secondary challenge event will have only the higher points out of two counting towards their ranking.

PRESS RELEASE

US Open 10-Ball and US Open 8-Ball Seeded by FargoRate

Henderson, NV April 11, 2017

The 2017 US Open 10-Ball and US Open 8-Ball Championships will be seeded based on players’ Fargo Ratings. The US Open 10Ball Championship will be held July 17-19 and the US Open 8-Ball Championship will be held July 29-31 at Griff’s, a beautiful new Las Vegas pool room owned by CSI founder Mark Griffin. The events will be played on 9-foot tables and will flank the 2017 BCAPL National Championships, July 19-29 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. The US Open 10-Ball is a World PoolBilliard Association ranking event; players will earn WPA points based on how they finish. Both events are part of the 2017 Mosconi Cup USA team points event series.

The top 16 of the 64 players will be equally distributed on the bracket by rating, with the top player in position no. 1, second in position no. 33, and so forth. The remaining 48 players will then be placed on the bracket randomly. This ensures a seeded player will not face another seeded player until at least the third round. Although players with 200 games or more in the FargoRate system have an established Fargo Rating, eligibility for seeding will be more stringent. Seeded players must have 300 or more games in the system and at least half of those must have been played in the past two years. The US Open 10-Ball and US Open 8-Ball Championships are both double elimination,

alternate breaks, played on 9-foot Diamond tables with pro-cut pockets and Simonis 860 Tour Blue cloth, using Cyclop Balls. There will be $10,000 guaranteed added to each event with the champion of each pocketing $15,000, based on full fields. The US Open 10-Ball and US Open 8-Ball Championships are being scheduled around the 2017 BCAPL National Championships, allowing players also to participate in the 9-Ball, 10-Ball and 8Ball Challenges. Those popular events, which are open to anyone, will take place at The Rio AllSuite Hotel & Casino. Register today at playcsipool.com/2017us-open-championships or call CSI at (702) 719- 7665.

PERFORMANCE

MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.

7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

3 Foundation Layers The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
