Saez downs Gray
in finals of 1st Texas Tornado Open
by: Skip Maloney - AzBilliards.com Staff MCALLEN, TX Robb Saez and Joey Gray stepped into the finals of the 1st Annual Texas Tornado Open on the weekend of May 10-11 with some history between them. Back in April, they'd squared off in what amounted to a $5,000, race-to-21 quarterfinal match at the 1st Annual Smokin' Aces Bar Box Tournament in Poplar Bluff, MO, won by Saez. Three years ago, they met in the finals of both the 38th Annual Texas Open and a stop on the Midwest 9-Ball Tour, both won by Saez, who pocketed just over two grand, total, more than Gray in those two meetings. The payout difference in the finals of the $10,000-added Texas Tornado tournament that drew 80 entrants to Easy Eight Billiards and Sports Bar in McAllen, TX was $1,480, and once again, Saez came out on top, completing an undefeated run to claim the first of what Texas Tornado Vivian Villareal hopes will become a twiceyearly event. "We're testing the waters," she said in the days just prior to start of the tournament, "If it's successful, we might try to do it twice a year."

First Annual “Texas Tornado Open 2014 (l to r) 2nd Joey Gray, 3rd C J Wiley, 1st Robb Saez Villareal, in addition to overseeing her first tournament, assisted by tour director Tito Fernandez, found time to compete in the Open, where she finished in the tie for 13th place, and a short field (seven entrants) Ladies Tournament, which she won, defeating Erin Lacy in the finals. If success is measured by participant response, it looks as though this first Texas Tornado Tournament won't be the last. "Players, room owners and sponsors were very happy," said Fernandez, who was flying solo on this one, after something of an apprenticeship under Lewis Jones, tour director of the Fast Eddie's Tour. "There were some glitches," he admitted, "but overall, things ran smoothly." Winner Robb Saez agreed, noting that while there were a few "quirks to fix," match scheduling worked well and didn't fall behind anywhere. He was also pleased with the tournament officials' decision to maintain the promised $10,000-added, which was to have been applied to a full 128-player field. "They added the $10,000, in spite of not having the expected 128," said Saez. "Nobody does that. These people were short over 40 people and they added the $10,000, anyway. That's pretty awesome." According to Fernandez, plans for next year
www.RackemMag.com
include doubling that $10K-added and again, looking to guarantee that amount. The entry list for this first-ever Texas Tornado Open contained a long list of usual suspects, from the big backyard of Texas (Villareal, Charlie Bryant, Sylver Ochoa) to the tables of the Midwest (Shane McMinn, John Gabriel, and of course, runner-up Gray). Saez and Gray met up first in a winners' side semifinal, while C.J. Wiley and Scott Kitto met in the other one. Saez took his first of two over Gray 7-5, and in the hot seat match, faced Wiley, who'd given up only a single rack to Kitto. Saez defeated Wiley 7-3, and waited on the return of Gray. Gray had moved over and could not have been too pleased to draw Charlie Bryant right away. Bryant had defeated Sylver Ochoa 7-5 and John Gabriel 7-3 to reach Gray. Kitto, in the meantime, had his own problems, having drawn Shane McMinn, who'd defeated Rudy Sanchez 7-5 and shut out Nino Salazar, who was returning to competition after about 20 years away. McMinn eliminated Kitto 7-4, while Gray was doing likewise to the Hillbilly 7-5. Gray went on to defeat McMinn 7-3 in the

quarterfinals, and by the same score, downed C.J. Wiley in the semifinals, setting up a familiar match for Gray; one destined to have familiar results. As he had done back in April at the Smokin' Aces Bar Box tournament, Gray took an early lead over Saez. He was ahead in that tournament quarterfinal 17-11, racing to 21, before Saez caught a gear and won 10 of the next 12. "He had me 5-1, racing to seven, in this one," said Saez, "and I beat him six in a row. He made a couple of unforced errors and I took advantage." Villareal went undefeated through the short field of seven entrants, onhand for the $1,000-added Ladies event. Everyone who played went home with a payout. Villareal defeated Sophie Lopez in the battle for the hot seat 7-3. Lopez moved over to a semifinal match against Erin Lacey, who'd just eliminated Rhea Brooks 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Lacey downed Lopez by the same score in the semifinals, for a shot at the Texas Tornado. Lacey put up a fight, forcing a case game, but Villareal prevailed to enshrine her own name in what will be the annals of her own namesake tournament. Tour director Tito Fernandez thanked the ownership and staff at Easy Eight Billiards and Sports Bar for their hospitality, as well as sponsors Palenque Grill, Boggus Ford, Hampton Inn & Suites, Big Rio Grande Construction, Lopez Tires and Wheels, Texas Boiler Room, Villa Del Mar Restaurant, Careers Institute, Smiles Studio, Max Muscle Sports Nutrition, Voggo Business Consulting, Palenque Chicken, Taco Palenque, Mambo Seafood, Bellissima La Revista, G-Cues Billiard and Dart Supply, Mega Doctor News, FNT Horses & Carriages, LLC, Ozone Billiards and Texas Border Business.

Crispian Ng Captures His Omega First Billiards Tour Stop of 2014 1 2 3 4 5/6 7/8 9-12 13-16 17-24 10 page
June 2014
On the weekend of April 26-27, Crispian Ng claimed the top prize at the third stop of the 2014 Omega Billiards Tour at JR Pockets in Denton, TX. Crispian captured that first place spot by winning undefeated through a tough field of 80 players! Over $11,500 was given out in monies and prizes that weekend! (Tourney payouts + prizes + player’s auction.) After a bye, Crispian defeated Jeff Franklin 7-4, Lonnie Rozelle hill-hill, and teammate Juan Para 7-4. On Sunday, Crispian then had another tough match with last year’s Tour Champion, Tony Sulsar. Crispian prevailed hill-hill which set him up against the always-tough Steve Raynes. Crispian prevailed again (7-4) and that led him to the hotseat with newcomer Ricky Jaramillo. Ricky and Crispian both played great and it showed with their hill-hill score (7-6) and Crispian taking the win to wait to see who he would play in the finals. Tony Sulsar was making a tear on the one-loss side like he always can do, with wins over Greg Sandifer 8-4, Robbie Smith 8-5, Chuck Dement 8-4, and another 8-4 score with Barry Emerson. Robbie Smith and Robin Barbour would finish their highest yet with a 7th/8th finish. Chuck Dement also claimed his highest finish with a great 5th place, along with Steve Raynes (new points leader). 4th place went to Barry Emerson, who always finishes high and is tough to beat. Newcomer Ricky Jaramillo fought hard against Tony Sulsar in the semifinals but Tony came on top 8-5 for a rematch with Crispian. Ricky placed an impressive 3rd. The finals were a great display of talent! Great shot making under the pressure to win was noted by many of the players and friends who stayed to watch. In the end, Crispian would nail a tough 9-ball combo to seal his win 7-5 to capture his FIRST Omega Tour stop!! Crispian earned $925 for 1st place and tony took home $530. Congratulations to ALL of the players for their fine play and great finishes! This event was the Omega Billiards Tour’s third stop with $1,500 added with 80 players!! The Predator Player Tracker is back on and the top three players at the end of the year will win a plethora of great Predator Prizes! Four more stops to see who gets all the Predator products! Currently Steve Raynes is in first, Jersey Jack Lynch is second and Tony Sulsar in the third place ranking. Further, fourth through eighth places at the end of the year rankings will each receive a free entry into the 2015 BCAPL Nationals! A HUGE thank you goes out to Predator Cues, Poison Break Cues, BCAPL/ CSI, and Lucasi and Players Cues. We would also like to give a big thanks to our additional sponsors, OB Cues, Irving Ink and Thread, Pro Billiard Service, Wallace Custom Cues, AZBilliards.com, and BilliardsPress.com. The 2014 Omega Billiards Tour calendar is already set with 4 more stops and a Season Finale. The fourth stop will be held at Rusty’s Billiards in Fort Worth, Texas June 14-15, 2014! Each stop is limited to 80 players (an increase from 64) and the monies guaranteed added has increased to $1,500 for each stop!! Pool is alive and thriving in Texas!! On The Road with ... C J Wiley http://www.cjwiley.com Back in the early 80s, “Omaha John” and I were touring around on a road trip and ended up in a small bar in South Carolina. The owner of the bar was a BIG gambler and would take the 5 and the break from anyone playing on the bar table with the Big Cue Ball. We had been going through a tough time and I was “breaking even” with everyone. Usually I would get ahead, then start “letting up,” they would come back, “get even” and quit. This was getting annoying and I was beginning to question if I had enough “heart,” to be a champion player. This was a big thing in the gambling days, if you have the heart to close someone out. To put them away. And it was happening again, I had got up over 2k for $200 a game and now we raised it to $300. a game and the guy beat me 7 IN A ROW and we were just $100. winner. Omaha John came up to me and said “if you’re ever going to be a great road player you better do it now. I’m not out here “for my health,” I have a wife and kid at home and I have to win, breaking even is for

I’ll always remember that lesson... “suckers!” He was serious, so, standing my cue against a near by stool, I stopped playing and went to the bathroom - it was “now or never,” I thought, looking in the mirror, starring straight into my own eyes - “do you really want to be a pool player, do you really have what it takes?” I hesitated slightly, waiting for the answer to come from my “Inner Self ”..... not the answer I wanted to hear, I HAD to know the truth....I needed to know and my life would change from that moment. Finally the answer had come - I knew in my “heart of hearts” that the moment had arrived. “The Moment of Truth,” I couldn’t be a sucker, “stuck” at my current level, struggling to break even and making up excuses. There was only one choice - to become a winner and break out of that “victim level” and do whatever it would take to learn the Truth about pool and what it takes to be the best. I made that decision right then because I had to. And it’s a decision that continues because life’s much more

about the “journey,” than the “destination.” Life is the best teacher, and at that moment my life was the game and for an instant they melded into One... The Game is the Teacher! Often times we are held back because we don’t need to win, we don’t have to get better. I didn’t have the luxury that day and I thank Omaha John for putting me in a situation where I had to be honest with myself. No one else matters when you’re trying to get to the “next level,”{in life} it’s all about ourselves.... it’s about looking ourselves in the mirror and “real eyesing” that the answer we’ve been searching for is not outside, it’s inside ourselves. I went back out there and was like an entirely different person. John had been telling me to stop spinning my ball and playing low percentage shots....so I did. Others had made comments about my game that I had ignored because of my ego, so I incorporated those suggestions too - my perception had changed, the Game had given me a vital spiritual experience.
his energy. I didn’t care what it took I made myself shoot the correct shot, in the right way and forgot forever my childish reasons for not playing the Game correctly. To be a Champion at anything we must keep doing “the next right thing,” whether we like it or not. Looking back I can’t help but think the chains of mediocrity had been broken, and I had started to become a player. From that moment on I had a “6th Sense” about pool and knew what I HAD to practice to improve and what I needed to ignore. “The chain breaks at it’s weakest link” and that became the motto of my practice routines. I’ll always remember that lesson Omaha John Shuput and the Game taught me in that bar in South Carolina.... and the mirror that reflected what I needed to have “eyes that could see my self ”. ‘The Game is the Inner Teacher’ www.cjwiley.com Next Month: Catalyst of a great stroke

Throw – friend or foe? While throw is the likely culprit in most misses by amateurs, it also makes a lot of shots and position plays possible. Friend and foe. This article assumes you have a basic understanding of throw. You should be clear that it’s a friction effect between colliding balls. It causes object balls to leave the moment of impact on a slightly different track than would be expected by those who assume “ghostball” is the full truth of ball behavior. You should understand there are two flavors of throw – collision-induced and spin-induced – and have a pretty good grasp of how it all works. To the extent you’re clear on how it works, you can make appropriate aim adjustments to compensate for the throw effects. You can also take advantage of the effects to accomplish shots and position results in a variety of ways. The problem? The rules of throw are science. Putting it all together successfully at the table is art. It’s the wellimagined execution of your personal dance with all the elements of the shot. It’s creative and personal. And there’s the rub (pun intended). When we are making adjustments for throw in order to sink a ball, there is much to consider. If we don’t properly consider all the factors, there’s a good chance of missing the shot. Throw as foe. Great players, especially in games like straight pool, take every opportunity to “take the throw out of the shot.” What does that mean? Shot-making is much easier when throw is reduced or eliminated. The object ball path is much more precisely predictable. This means fewer misses. Less risk. Fewer bad surprises. Taking the throw out of a shot means eliminating or reducing the friction effects. The object ball goes where it would go based on the ghostball principle – down the line of centers of the cueball and object ball at impact. No guessing. So let’s look at a few ways to git’r done. • Clean the balls: The cleaner, shinier, and slipperier the balls are, the less friction between them. Some top straight pool players wax their ball set prior to trying for high runs. Less friction, less throw, more accuracy and consistency. Polish your ball set and reduce throw. • Clean your cueball: Every time you get the opportunity to touch the cueball (new game, scratch, ball-in-hand, etc.), give it a wipe. You’ll see chalkmarks on the ball. If one of those chalkmarks happens to become the contact point when the cueball smacks
www.RackemMag.com
another ball, the friction between the balls increases dramatically. The cueball tries to climb the object ball and throw undercuts the ball. An ugly miss. Clean your ball. • Roll your cueball: This is the biggest tip, for several reasons. Foremost is the fact that a rolling cue ball throws less (collision-induced throw) than a skidding ball and is easier to control. Also worth knowing is that a backspinning ball actually throws the object ball even less than roll, but backspin is much harder to control. Skid (stun) throws the most. And consider the fact that a rolling ball does not curve. The sooner your cueball is in full natural roll, the straighter it’s going. Draw and stun are both skidding shots, meaning that if you hit anything but dead perfect on the vertical axis of the cueball, your ball can curve. Roll your ball. • Gearing english: So-called “gearing english” is the perfect amount of outside english to effectively cancel out the effects of collision-induced throw. In other words, we’re using spin-induced throw to neutralize the collision-induced throw. Very difficult to be accurate, but the concept is certainly valid and useful. The more general point here is that a little outside english can help in some cases. When the CB and OB are fairly close together, squirt and swerve become negligible, and this type of shot is quite reasonable. Know your skills. • Bias your tip: Some players try to set up their shots with their tip a hair to one side or the other of the vertical axis. Their reasoning is that they want to know, if they err, which side it will be. A little bit of “helping english” (outside) can take some of the throw out of the shot. • Speed: It’s a tradeoff. The softer you shoot, the more throw. The harder you shoot, the smaller the pocket becomes and the farther the cueball travels. It’s your call. • Cheat the pocket: This is a different way of taking the throw out. Aim to cut the ball toward the far side of the pocket, rather than the center. In other words, over-cut a little. This doesn’t reduce throw, but it is a way to allow for it. Throw out the throw when you can. Make more shots. Run more balls. Truth is stranger than friction.

TABLE TALK
BY: MICHAEL K GLASS
American Rotation
What Is It, and Why Should You Play?
Michael K Glass
Michael Glass has been teaching pool for close to 10 years. He is a Recognized PBIA Billiards Instructor, taught by none other than Bob Jewett of the San Francisco Billiard Academy. Michael has been playing pool almost all of his life (except when he was in the Navy — it’s hard to install a pool table on a rocking ship!). He managed to stay away from the hustler life; he doesn’t believe in being dishonest in order to win money. He will, however, occasionally play for a beer or two at the local watering hole. Michael teaches all levels of pool players, from beginner to pro, and works on all aspects of the game, from fundamentals, to pattern play, to trick shots. He can be found playing in his home town of San Ramon, CA at Crown Billiards. Visit his website at mikekglass.com for pool tips or to schedule a lesson!

American Rotation is a fresh take on a traditional game, created by Joe Tucker. The rules are simple: Strike the lowest ball on the table first, pocketing any called ball. Collect points through each rack, and the first person to reach the agreed upon goal (140 is the current American Billiard Club standard) is the winner. Balls 1 through 10 are worth a point each, and the 11 through 15 are worth two. There are 20 points available per rack. I asked Joe why he created this game. He told me that Filipino players are some of the best players in the world, and most of them cut their teeth on 15-ball rotation, a very difficult game in its own right. Joe wanted to introduce America to the game to help us catch up and “get us back on track.” Joe wanted to create a new billiards tour in which players from around the country could compete in a challenging game without all of the politics and in-fighting that seems to be prevalent today. He spent a couple of years testing and perfecting, and has finally unleashed the tour upon us. The American Billiard Club is now in its third season, and seems to be gaining momentum! Let’s look at what makes this tour different, and why you should consider joining! The rules were modified in ways to promote fairness, reduce the luck factor significantly, and reward good play. Rule: Breaker gets ball in hand after the break, no matter what happens: The break can be a big factor in many games, and the outcome of the rack can often depend on where the cue ball ends up on the table. By allowing ball-in-hand, the breaker can focus on getting a good spread of the rack to start her run. To make this rule fair, players lag for the first break, and alternate breaks for the rest of the game. Rule: Call your shot (ball and pocket), call your safeties: How many times has your opponent missed a shot, but ended up lucking out and leaving you with a difficult to impossible shot? This rule eliminates this possibility by allowing you to give the shot back to him. If he calls a safety, but a ball is pocketed, you can
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
make him shoot the next shot. If you choose to shoot, then the points for the pocketed ball(s) belong to you! This rule eliminates two-way shots (“if I miss, he’ll have trouble making the next shot”), which some may see as a bad thing. Joe’s thinking on this was to design American Rotation to reward good shot- and decision-making, and put more pressure on the shooter. Rule: 1 point for balls 1-10, 2 points for balls 11-15: Pressure, pressure, pressure! Joe tested making all balls 1 point, as well as 2 points for 1-5 instead. He discovered that making the last 5 balls 2 points each put more pressure on the players to focus on finishing their runs. Give up the last 5 balls, and you might end up with a 10-10 tie instead of a 20-0 lead! Rule: Jumps are allowed only with your playing cue: Let’s face it: Jumping is cool. But with today’s specialized cues, it has become less of a challenge, and has made safety play much more difficult. Joe wanted to reward good safety play, as well as teach Americans to kick better. How many amazing 3-rail kick shots have you seen Efren Reyes pull off? Joe wants us to practice and learn this. The game was introduced to help make Americans more competitive. Imagine this: You have become proficient at 10-ball, and can run a rack almost 50% of the time. You then sign up for a tournament to play 6-ball. How many racks do you think you’ll run now? Joe’s theory is that that is how many Filipino players, who grew up playing Rotation, feel about coming to America to play 9-ball! Joe also had this say: An added bonus of AR is that players appear to get along better with each other. They are focused more on the table and their opportunities, and are spending less time worried about the luck of the break and the luck of their opponent’s misses, which are now received with a smile and “Shoot again”. Here’s what I want you to do: Go to www. americanbilliardclub.com and check out what they have to say. (continued on page 31)

In my last two columns I outlined one of the best drills for learning to play position. With two spots on the table (A and B), you figure out how to pocket a ball on the first spot (A) and take the cue ball to the second spot (B) with the cue ball placed to make the shot easy. The first level of the drill is to use no cushions, so for positions A and B1 the easiest choice for me is to play the ball into pocket C and draw the cue ball straight to B1. You may find it easier to place the cue ball for a shot into pocket E and use a slight angle and center ball to “stun” over to B1. In any case, you should try as many pockets as possible to get from A to B1 without a cushion. The particular choice of A as the first point will give you lots of long shots. The next level is to use one cushion to get from A to B. For B1, you could just roll the ball into pocket C and come off the cushion at E with the appropriate placement of the cue ball (not shown -- work it out for yourself ). How many different pocket and cushion pairs are workable? Try each of the paths a few times to get a feel for where the cue ball needs to be and the spin to use, if any. A final part of the drill is to use two or more cushions to get the position. In general it’s better not to use a lot of rails to position the cue ball but sometimes either the layout of the table or the place the cue ball ended up forces more cushion contacts and you need to be ready for them. One twocushion path from A to B1 is shown. Can you find at least one more that would be a reasonable path if simpler paths were blocked by other balls? When working with two or more cushions on this drill, you should be thinking about two main aspects: what angle and spin makes the path easiest, and what is the whole range of possible locations that can be made to work for a particular path. For the “short” path shown from A to B1, the cue ball can be anywhere from about X to Y and the cue ball can be adjusted with draw into the right line. The position I prefer and would probably take with ball in hand is near X where the cue ball can be hit more softly due to the larger cut angle. That would be a poor choice to try to place the cue ball from the previous shot because if you leave the cue ball just a few inches northwest of the location shown you have safed yourself. Also, if you leave the cue ball half way between X and Y the shot is very difficult to reach for a right-handed player. A less dangerous position is the longer shot shown where the cue ball can be reached from the end of the table. If you leave the cue ball anywhere within a foot left or right of that position, the shot is not much harder. Work out the whole range of cue ball positions that will work for you to get the short path shown.
www.RackemMag.com
When a ball is near the pocket, such as at A, multi-rail position is easier as you can adjust the side spin to get different angles without much fear of missing. Can you also get to B2 as shown from both cue ball positions shown? Can you change the side spin to get the full range of angles off the second cushion for other B positions between B1 and B2? Mostly that should be done with just left or right side spin and a rolling cue ball. Remember that the main point of the multi-rail part of the drill is to get a feeling for the easy paths off cushion and learning the natural paths for the cue ball.

THE SKY IS NO LIMIT
This month I thought I would do something different. In the month’s past I have shared my views and opinions. This month I want to do something different. I was on AZBilliard forum and came across this letter from Mike Dechaine. Of late he has been playing some very great pool as he is on the cover of the June Issue of Stroke Pool Magazine. When the Mosconi Team was announced my first thoughts were, where was Mike Dechaine? Below you will find his thoughts. A Letter from Mike Dechaine - 05-28-2014, 09:28 PM I thought it best to let a little time pass from when Mark Wilson announced his picks for the players he’ll consider to be on this year’s Mosconi Cup team. To say my not making his list stung would be one of the biggest understatements ever. There has been a lot of speculation as to why I was excluded but I think at this point, those reasons matter much less than the fact that I didn’t make it on. I have always been a player who wears his emotions on his sleeve for all to see. I am a fierce competitor and I feel like I have a real chance to win in
every match I play. I know that I can be hard on myself, and others, during the heat of competition. I’m 26 years old. Everyone has to face disappointments in their lives and I’m no different. I am learning, however, that how we respond to adversity can help define who we are. I’m working on better ways to channel my emotions toward the positive. My plan going forward will be to stay positive while I keep trying to play the best pool of my life. A big thank you to all who have supported me and to those who might not have, to them I say please keep an eye on me and maybe I will earn your support, as well. I promise I will try hard. I also want to thank Snookers, RI and OB cues, thank you guys for giving me a chance. And the other biggest understatement ever: I love pool! Sincerely, Mike Dechaine

2014
It was a beautiful spring day in Lexington, Kentucky. The 2013-14 Bluegrass BCA Pool League season was in full swing and my team was in the middle of playing an 8-Ball match at Silver Cue Billiards. My teammates Dean Lawson, Kenny Tran, Doug Pulliam and Phillip Jones were all in attendance to help our team maintain a first place ranking. I was 4-0 on the evening when team captain, Phillip Jones, called me to the table to compete in what was scheduled to be my final game. My opponent was Charles Hackworth, a very strong local player, capable of running out from almost any position. I knew it was going to be a tough game and I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes if I wanted to leave Lexington with a perfect 5-0 record.
As I broke the balls, it appeared that I was going to have an easy run-out. I calmly began plucking solid balls from the table. However, my run-out went awry as I attempted to play position on my last solid ball. I was slightly hooked behind the side of my opponents 14 and since the 8 was tied up on the opposite end of the table I knew I was in some serious trouble. At first, I thought about trying to jump or masse around the 14 but with the 8 being tied up there was no reward in pocketing the ball. I knew I had to do something creative. The only way for me to win the game would be to play safe and hope for a miracle. My only chance would be to return to the table with a clear shot on the 6 with
www.RackemMag.com
an opportunity to break out the 8. The problem was how do you play safe? My opponent had 7 stripes on the table and I had one solid ball. Clearing off all of your balls without running out is usually fatal, especially when pitted against someone as skilled as Hackworth. As I surveyed the situation, I knew it was going to be a difficult undertaking. My only clear option was to shoot the 6 at a slow speed crossing it in front of the cue ball (leaving it in the position of the green arrow) hoping to block Hackworth from directly contacting any of his balls. This option game me a realistic chance to return to the table with a decent shot. The key is to cut the 6 slightly to the left with the correct speed (leaving the cue ball in the position of the black arrow). If the shot was struck either too hard or too soft then I would leave Charles with an easy shot which would most likely cost me the game. I am happy to say that I executed the shot perfectly. After executing the shot one of my teammates said, “Anthony, you really doublecrossed ‘em on that shot.” I had Charles blocked from hitting any of his balls directly. When he returned to the table, he kicked at one of his stripes leaving me with a long straight in shot on the 6. This time my shot on the 6 allowed me to draw my cue ball straight back and possibly break out the 8. Once again I stepped up to the table and executed the shot perfectly. The cue ball drew all the way back to the
end rail then rebounded into the 12. I was left with an easy straight in shot for the win. Charles then approached the table and politely conceded the game. As I walked away, I knew I was very fortunate. I had captured victory from almost certain defeat. Thoroughly weighing your options effectively can be a powerful ally. Sometimes it may seem like you don’t have a chance to win. However, great players are masters at creating something from nothing. So the next time you are at the table in what appears to be a no win scenario, don’t be double-crossed look for ways to be creative. Sometimes you have to manipulate the table to turn a losing proposition into a fighting chance to win.

Torres ! o w T e Tak BOGIES BILLIARDS HOUSTON, TX May 17-18, 2014 Once again, junior player Joey Torres wowed the crowds as he breezed to his second, consecutive victory in the amateur division of this past weekend’s Lone Star Billiards tour event. Torres topped a field of 47 including tour newcomer Masahiro “Hiro” Nakahara in the final, 7-5. On his way to victory, Torres annihilated Jack Cavalier, 7-0, Bill Fain, 7-1, and Sonny Bosshamer, 7-1, before meeting Hiro for the hot seat. Nakahara took down Chuck Adams, 7-5, Scott Mackenzie, 7-2, and tour veteran Erik Renteria, 7-4, for a shot at winning his first Lone Star tour title. Action on the one loss side saw Brian Rosenbaum eliminate Kenny Lucio, and it was Kevin Nguyen over Scott Mackenzie, by the same score, 5-2. Austin player Cielo Velasquez who took an early hit from Bosshamer, was ousted by Jonathan Poon who secured 6 consecutive wins after suffering a second round loss to Rich Rodriguez. Bosshamer went on to beat Nguyen, 5-2, while Poon fell to Renteria, 5-4. Hot seat action saw a composed Torres pull ahead of Nakahara for a 7-5 win, while Renteria stream rolled Bosshamer, 5-1. Nakahara pushed through Renteria, 5-3, to meet up, once again, with Torres. These two young guns displayed incredible calm and focus, but Hiro couldn’t make it happen. Torres overcame Hiro in the final set, 7-5. The open division boiled down to Chase Rudder and Rafael Martinez, locking horns for the cat bird’s seat. Rudder’s victims included Curt Bovenzi, 9-3, Rich Rodriguez, 9-4, and Hiro Nakahara, 9-5. Martinez showed no mercy as he dealt blows to Rich Droste, 9-4, Sonny Bosshamer, 9-3, and Cielo Velasquez, 9-4. On the one loss side, Joey Torres overcame Mike Evans, 7-2, while Kevin Nguyen slipped by Bovenzi, 7-6. Nakahara bested Nguyen, 7-2, and Velasquez eliminated Torres, 7-6. Nakahara forged on, slipping by Velasquez, 7-6, while Rudder captured the hot seat over Martinez, 9-6. Martinez made quick work of Nakahara, 7-2, but fell to Rudder in the final.

Pierce Wins
on Gulf Coast Tour Austin’s own Kim Pierce, aka “Texas Heat”, crushed the competition at the May 18, 2014, Gulf Coast Tour 9-ball event held at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. Pierce faced some of the toughest regional competitors Texas has to offer, surging to a final victory over hot seat winner, Killeen’s own Kimmy Nguyen, 7-4. First round action saw Pierce defeat Sara Bork, 7-3, followed by Belinda Lee, 7-1, and Nayla Hoak, 7-2, as Nguyen powered through the lower half of the winners’ bracket with wins over Bonnie Eddlemen-Mason and Michelle Yim. After an early round loss to Natalie Mans, Loretta Lindgren fought back, positioning herself for a shot at third place. Lindgren overpowered Diana Cardona, 7-3, and Eddlemen-Mason, 7-1, to meet Lee. Working on a comeback herself, Lee secured four consecutive one loss side matches including wins over Mans and Yim. Lee eliminated Lindgren, fighting
for a chance to defend her March victory on the Gulf Coast Tour. Back on the east side, Nguyen was on a mission, battling hard to secure the hot seat over Pierce. In a grueling, emotional set, Nguyen pulled through brilliantly, 7-6. Pierce overcame Lee, reaching Nguyen once again, this time for the final match. As the first set commenced, Pierce was on track and far from finished. Nguyen unwillingly relinquished her hold, suffering her first loss to Pierce, 7-5. In overtime, Nguyen failed to regroup, losing the final set to Pierce, 7-4. The Women’s Gulf Coast Regional Tour would like to thank its sponsors, Delta-13 Rack, www.delta-13.com, APA of North Harris County, www.facebook.com/ apanorthharriscounty, as well as Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar for hosting another first class event. The next women’s Gulf Coast Tour event will be held Sunday, July 6th, at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas.

WOMEN OF GRAND PRAIRIE (TX)
The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its National Championships at the Las Vegas Tropicana, May 10-16. With a new title sponsor – Universal Cues – the ACS enjoyed a significant increase in the number of pool leagues sanctioning with the member-governed association in the 2013-2014 league year, resulting in a 20% jump in participants at the Nationals! With the jump in attendees, ideal dates in mid-May and the attractive location, many participants observed that these Championships will continue to grow significantly in 2015 and beyond! Singles action began at the first of the week with handicapped 9-ball. Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) recovered the Men’s 9-Ball Singles title he last won in 2012 by taking the hot seat from Richard Andrada (Denver, CO) – National Master Dustin racing to “10” and “Open” Richard racing to “7.” Andrada recovered to claim a finals spot against Gunia, and Andrada took the first set; but Gunia claimed the deciding set for the honors. On the distaff side Women’s 9-Ball Singles, “Open-status” Jacki Duggan (Virginia Beach, VA) – racing to 5 – took the undefeated route to the finals, completing her march with a win over Melinda Bailey (Fort Worth, TX) – racing to 6. But “Advanced-status” Bailey recovered to eliminate “National Master” Jessica Frideres [7], and then double-dipped Jacki Duggan in two sets for her first national title [and the first national title of the week gathered up by a member of the “Women of Grand Prairie [TX]” league]. In the 8-Ball Singles – with players of separate skill sets competing in “Standard”, “Open” and “Advanced” divisions – Tony

STAND OUT at ACS Nationals
Sulsar (Bells, TX) recovered from an A-side finals loss to Walter Glass (Las Vegas, NV) to oust Shane Manaole (Converse, TX) at 3rd place in the Men’s Advanced 8-Ball Singles. Sulsar then wore down Glass over two sets to take the title from one of the country’s legendary bar table stars! In the Women’s Advanced 8-Ball Singles, Bernie Store (Phoenix, AZ) recovered from an earlier-round loss to take on multi-time national champion Jessica Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) in the finals. Store won the first set over Frideres, but upending Jessica in two straight sets proved too difficult, and Jessica Frideres added the 2014 crown to her ever-expanding national title resume! In the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles, Geno Galarneau (Medicine Hat, IL) eclipsed Steven Benegas (Joliet, IL) in the A-side semifinals, but Benegas regained his momentum on the B-side to claim that side of the bracket and gain another shot at Galarneau in the tourney finals. Geno Galarneau remained undefeated, taking the first set over Benegas for the crown! The Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles finals featured once-defeated Gina Quinones (Las Vegas, NV) versus undefeated Kassandra Bein (Virginia Beach, VA). While Bein controlled the hot seat, Quinones had lost her secondround match and then won eight straight matches on the B-side to gain her chance for the title. However, Kassandra Bein took no prisoners in the finals to take down honors in the first set over Quinones. Two Canadiens highlighted the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles finals: undefeated Tim Pidborochynski (Edmonton, AB) versus Rob Wright (Surrey, BC). While Pidborochynski held the hot seat, Wright drew a bye in the first round, lost his second-round match and reeled off ten straight

victories to gain his finals seat. But Wright’s string came to an end in the first set, as Tim Pidborochynski claimed the title! The Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles action was more straightforward, as eventual winner Jamie Cork (Inver Grove Heights, MN) outpointed Deidre Ludwick (York, PA) in the A-side finals, and Cork repeated her victory over Ludwick in the first set of the tourney finals to gain her first-ever national championship! In the senior-aged 8-ball singles divisions, Seum Kantaluky (Grafton, VA) took down Brian Trudel (Calgary, AB) in the first set of the finals for the Men’s Senior (55+) 8-Ball Singles crown; once-defeated Linda Asleson (Billings, MT) improved on her 2013 runnerup finish to outduel three-time champ, undefeated Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA), in two sets of the tourney finals to take the Women’s Senior (50+) 8-Ball Singles; and Randy Goettlicher (Carrollton, TX) won seven consecutive sets on the one-loss side of the bracket before being outgunned in the deciding set of the tourney finals by undefeated Terry Downey (Las Vegas, NV), who gained the Super Senior (65+) Singles 8-Ball Singles title! The two Scotch Doubles 8-Ball divisions showcased perhaps the most dominant amateur scotch doubles team in the country, with defending champions Dustin Gunia and Jessica Frideres (NE/IA) again capturing the Advanced 8-Ball Scotch Doubles division with a comfortable one-set win over Jacki & Bill Duggan (VA); and the team of Yvette Villarreal/ Gilbert Martinez (TX) recovering from an earlier round loss to the undefeated pair of Heidi & Jerry French (AZ) to take the Open 8-Ball Scotch Doubles category in a two-set finals!

With the ACS schedule in the latter portion of the week allowing non-conflicting accommodation of entry into both 9-ball and 8-ball team competitions, there was still plenty of competition to keep every player involved – especially those out of the money who automatically qualified for free second-chance team divisions! In the Men’s Advanced 8-Ball Team division, defending champion Dick’s Pick (NV) fell to their local league rival Whoa Bundy (NV) [Ray Skenandore, Brad Huffman, Al Lawrence, Jason Kane, Jim Carmona and Frank Tran] in the finals of the triple-elimination bracket! The Women’s Advanced 8-Ball Team division showcased 2013 Women’s Open Team runner-ups After Eight (FL) [Janet Smith, Flori Lehart, Michelle Jarrell and Jamie Toennies] successfully moving up a grade to take down Virginia’s’s Newtowne Inn in the deciding set of the triple-elimination format for the top honors. The Men’s Open 8-Ball Team competition went to a finals deciding set with Magic Moments (BC) [Werner Ostwald, Clay Gloslee, Jim Brown, Rob Horton and Ron Douglas] clipping Virgus Cues (TX) in the title match. The Women’s Open 8-Ball Team champions heralded from the Women of Grand Prairie League (TX) - with All Mixed Up (TX) [Melinda Bailey, Courtney Evans, Janet Ybarra and Nina Stillwell] surviving a deciding set over The Four Divas (TX) for the title. Big Cowa (MN) [Sean Hendrickson, Pete Bidne, Pat Baxter, Scott Johnson, Ryan Peterson and Jason Standley] needed two sets in the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Team division final’s clash to make 8 Ball Rollin’ (NV) the bride’s maid. In the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Team division, the Women of Grand Prairie League in Texas claimed another title when Twisted Sisters (TX) [Teri Bridwell, Linda Reagan, Deborah Lopez, Christina Marks and Kerry Gallego] claimed two sets in the finals to overcome undefeated Shut Up ‘N Shoot (MN) for the crown. The 3-person 9-ball team divisions featured some of the top 8-ball team placers as well. Undefeated Whoa Bundy (NV) [Ray Skenandore, Jason Kane and Jim

Carmona] needed two sets in the finals to turn back a pesky Gotta Have It (NE) team for the Men’s Advanced 9-Ball Team title. The Women of Grand Prairie League in Texas took home some more national laurels in the Women’s Open 9-Ball Team field as All Mixed Up (TX) [Melinda Bailey, Courtney Evans, Janet Ybarra and Nina Stillwell] remained undefeated, including a one-set finals win over Newtowne 1 (VA). In the Men’s Open 9-Ball Team category, P-Noize (VA) [Nilbert Lim, Reymart Lim and Reyjen Carmona] lost its third match in the A-side and then reeled off nine consecutive sets to capture this title over Griffith Billiards (IN)! In the 10th Annual ACS National Artistic Pool Championships, Dustin Gunia of Omaha, NE added his third national title of the week, outpointing a packed field of entries. ACS would like to especially thank our title sponsor – Universal Cues, as well as Gary Benson and his tournament direction staff at High Country Promotions, as well as the exhibiting vendors and the host site – the Tropicana Las Vegas! Press Release GoPlayPool Announces New Features on Mobile App Aliso Viejo, CA— 5/16/14 — Today, GoPlayPool announced that they have launched new sections in their free mobile application. The new sections will include an improved directory of pool halls in the United States. The directory has been upgraded with new features like a more user-friendly search capability, more organized maps and more. Now, users can click on the “Nearby Tab” and the GPS in their mobile device will show them the pool halls in their location automatically. Also, within directory pages, GoPlayPool Member rooms will be listed in a “Featured Rooms” section in their respective states. Other segments which have been added are an instructional and information section called “GoPlayPool 101”. In this section, users can find a wide range of information including over 300 instructional videos and over 100 illustrated and descriptive drills. There are also hundreds of hours of information compiled from difference sources covering almost every aspect of pool that one could think of. GoPlayPool has also introduced segments like a “Did You Know” section with fun and interesting facts in the world of pool and billiards, stories about players and events throughout history and much more. GoPlayPool owner Mary Ann Starkey says, “We are so excited about introducing these new features and the improvements we’ve made in certain sections of the app. It’s a continuous process to keep our users engaged and coming back for more, and we’re very pleased to have the opportunity to give our users something new and exciting like this. There is so much information contained in these new sections, you could literally spend thousands of hours reading, learning and implementing this information into your own pool game. I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks once they’ve had a chance to browse through all of the new content on the app.” GoPlayPool would like to thank the talented and dedicated people who contributed their knowledge and work to this segment. Mary Ann says, “It was a group effort which included Mr. Allan Sand of Billiard Gods, Mr. Bert Kinister, “Dr. Dave” Alciatore at Billiard University, Mr. Max Eberle, and last but certainly

not least, Mr. Philip Capelle. We, at GoPlayPool are excited and honored to have them be a part of the GoPlayPool family, and have their hard work and information featured on the GoPlayPool App.” The GoPlayPool App is a free mobile application for Android and iOS platforms. It is a pool hall finder for the United States. The app helps players find locations to play pool and offers pool hall and bar owners an affordable way to advertise their establishments and promote pool tournaments and events that they have in their rooms. GoPlayPool App Member rooms receive great incentives when they sign up, including a free 30 day trial and product offers from companies like Kamui and other participating businesses. For pool halls or bars interested in advertising their establishment on the GoPlayPool App, they can sign up at www. goplaypool.com/pool-rooms. The GoPlayPool App team is constantly looking for ways to improve their product, and encourages its users to contact them with suggestions or input. You can reach GoPlayPool by visiting their website, social media pages or by email at info@goplaypool.com.
TABLE TALK (continued from page 13)
Download the rules, and get your friends to play a few games. If you like it, consider joining the tour at your local room (you only need 8 players). The fees are nominal, and all of the money paid into it is given back to the players. I am not being paid to endorse this tour. I am playing in it myself, at Crown Billiards out of San Ramon, CA. I look forward to making it to the Nationals, and hope to see many of you there! Joe Tucker is not looking to make money on this, either. He wants to create a new tour that is self-sustaining, makes it financially easier on travelling players, and focuses more on developing skill and having fun. They are looking to qualify 32 players, from 32 regions (1 out of every 16 players) to send to Nationals. Every player qualified for Nationals automatically gets $1000. One last note from Joe: With the tremendous help and backing of Mark Griffin of CSI and Don Owen of OB Cues, American Billiard Club was born out of love for the game and an effort to make competing on a national level financially viable. We lose many high level players that are forced to choose between leading a sensible and responsible lifestyle or pursue their passion for pocket billiards; ABC offers them the opportunity to stay in the game while leading a responsible life. Many players have been complaining about the lack of a legitimate tour that isn’t trying to pull the dreams of riches from the players’ pockets. Here is your chance, players, to make something good happen. As Joe himself says: Put up or shut up! For more information and rules about the American Billiard Club and American Rotation, and to find out how to bring the American Billiard Club Tour to your pool room, visit http://www.americanbilliardclub.com. I will attempt to answer any questions you may have as well. You can reach me at pool@mikekglass.com, or Joe Tucker at jttenball@gmail.com.

Press Release Diamond, Simonis and Aramith Sponsor BEF What’s a national pool tournament without the best equipment? The Billiard Education Foundation’s Junior National 9-Ball Championships, being held in conjunction with this year’s BCA Summit in Louisville, KY, will benefit from three long-time supporters of junior billiards: Diamond (tables), Simonis (cloth) and Aramith (balls). Diamond Billiard Products, conveniently located near Louisville, will provide 16 competition tables and related equipment for the four day national championship divisions. Balls will be provided by Aramith and cloth by Simonis, who has for years been a supporting sponsor of the Billiard Education Foundation. “We continue to be grateful to these industry sponsors, without whom the
Junior National Championships would not be able to continue to encourage student athletes and qualify our best youth competitors for the annual World Championships,” said BEF executive director, Samm Diep. Contact the BEF for more information on becoming a sponsor of this prestigious event or other junior billiard programs. The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) was formed in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity committed to promoting a lifelong love of pool and building the next generation of players through youth programs and academic scholarships. Visit billiardeducation.org or call (303) 926-1039 to learn more about junior billiard programs in your area.
