Big Dog Billiards Champions Challenge

DAY 1: 9-BALL
Day one of the champions challenge held at Big Dog Billiards, Des Moines, IA on May 4-6, 2017 kicked off with 9-ball, race to 11, best of 3 sets. Earl jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but that was quickly erased with multiple packages from Shane. First set final score was 11-6 for Shane. The second set was very similar, with Shane playing very well, and cruising to another 11-6 win. Earl just couldn’t seem to get his break working in either set, or the sets may have been closer. Shane takes down day one easily, which made everyone think this challenge match was going to be a route.
DAY 2: 10-BALL
Day 2 of the champions challenge was 10-ball, which no one thought earl had a chance in. the day began with Shane jumping out to the early lead in the first set. But just when we thought it was going to be a repeat of day 1, earl began to find his groove. Set one ended up going to the hill, with Shane prevailing 9-8 in a thriller. Set 2 saw Shane jump out to a 3-1 lead. But the match would take a decisive turn in earl’s favor. he found a break that worked consistently, and showed us the earl of days past with his play. He worked through rack after rack with ease. Earl went on to win set 2 9-3. Earl kept his momentum going in set 3, getting out on some unbelievably tough racks. Earl’s safety play was spot on as well, locking Shane up several times. Between his pure shooting and tremendous safety play, earl went on to take the third set 9-3 yet again. The crowd was left is awe of what earl had just accomplished against the USA’s top player. Earl showed all of us that he’s still a force to be reckoned with.

DAY 3: STRAIGHT POOL (14:1)
Day 3 started off with a challenge match of a different kind between these great champions. They went out to one of our top local golf courses and played a round, with a small wager per hole. If any of you don’t know, earl can still play some golf, as Shane found out. Earl ended up winning by 7 strokes, shooting a 74 on a tough course. After a tough morning of golf, Shane set out to beat earl at 14:1. Many people had Earl as the day 3 favorite. But, we all know how strong Shane plays on a bigfoot table, no matter what the game. This was to be the decider of the champions challenge. Shane comes out of the gate firing, with a 50 ball run. Earl stayed patient, just waiting for his opportunity to get back in the match. Once at the table, earl began what was to be the high run of the match, with 80. He never looked back. with great determination, earl put on a clinic of how to play the great game of straight pool. IT just wasn’t Shane’s day, and Earl finished the match with a 200134 win. included the elimination of Stanley, and more recent victories over Cody Wright 8-4 and Robin Barbour 8-3. Guernsey’s hopes for a re-match against Gregory fell short by a single match, spoiled by Barbour, who’d defeated Gregory 7-2 in the 9/12 matches. Ng drew Mike Nagaki, who’d just eliminated Brandon Thrasher and Albert Nieto, both 7-4. Guernsey, apparently on something of a mission, shut out Dement, as Ng downed Nagaki 8-4. In a straight-up race to 8, Guernsey defeated Ng 8-4 in the quarterfinals, and in another straight-up race to 8, gave up only a single rack to Bayda in the semifinals. Whitehead managed to slow Guernsey down a bit in the opening set of the true double elimination final, though not by enough, as Guernsey took that opening set 8-5. Whitehead dominated the deciding set, allowing Guernsey only a single rack on his way to claiming the event title. Tour Director Melinda Bailey thanked the ownership and staff of JR Pockets, as well as sponsors Michael Hoang of OMEGA Billiards Supply, FargoRate.com and OB Cues. The next stop on the Omega Billiards Tour, scheduled for May 27-28, will be a $1,700-added event, hosted by Puckett’s in Fort Worth, TX.
l-r Roman Bayda, Justin Whitehead, and Paul Guernsey from: Melinda Bailey A frequent competitor over the years in the annual US Bar Table Championships, Oklahoma’s Justin Whitehead brought his small-table skills to the fourth stop on the Omega Billiards Tour on the weekend of April 29-30, 2017. Played on 8-foot tables, the $1,700-added event drew 95 entrants to JR Pockets in Denton, TX. Whitehead came within a single match of going undefeated in this most recent event. The single loss came in the opening set of a true double elimination final at the hands of Paul Guernsey, who, following a defeat at the hands of Donnie Gregory in the opening round, won 11 matches on the loss side to challenge Whitehead in the finals. Whitehead came back from the first set loss to give up only a single game in the second set and claim the event title. Whitehead’s journey to the winners’ circle was almost re-routed in the second round, when U.S. Open Champion Jeremy Jones battled him to double-hill. Whitehead prevailed, though, and arrived at a winners’ side semifinal against Chuck Dement, having given up, on average, only 3.5 racks per match (the figure would have been less than 2, had it not been for Jones chalking up eight against him). Roman Bayda, in the meantime, who, like Whitehead, had been challenged in a double hill match in the second round by the tour’s ranking leader, Rick Stanley, advanced for a winners’ side semifinal match against Crispian Ng. As is often the case, the challenges increased for Whitehead as the winners’ side matches narrowed. He downed Dement 8-5, as Bayda was busy sending Ng to the loss side by the same score. Whitehead faced his second double-hill challenge, battling Bayda for the hot seat . He won it and waited on Guernsey. Moving to the loss side, it was Dement who had the misfortune of picking up Guernsey, who was eight matches in to his 11-match, loss-side streak, which had

DEVELOP ROUTINES TO PLAY YOUR BEST Playing pool is a game that requires finesse, as there are countless times at the table where it is essential to have your mind and body working in perfect synchrony so that you can make that difficult cut, bank, or combination shot. In order to achieve the needed confidence and muscle-memory that good pool playing requires, it is imperative that you develop unique, personalized routines that help you prepare for battle. As humans, we are creatures of habit and perform our best when we feel comfortable in our surroundings. When we experience new situations in life, we run the risk of overreacting and allowing our nervous system to create a high level of anxiety to help ward off the stress. Unfortunately, while we are actively focusing to minimize nerves, we often get “out of sorts” and away from the rituals we usually do that allow us to play our best. For example, if you are fixated on looking at the bracket for the tournament, you might forget about the importance of taking a few minutes to yourself to breathe, use imagery to see success, and review your personal goals before putting together your stick. The good news is that we can ward off much of the negative anxiety we experience in life by developing routines that help us feel comfortable. In essence, the better we feel in our surroundings, the better the chances we will play our best pool. Some ideas to consider when developing your routines include: • • •

Be prepared. The night before a big tournament be sure to take care of all the small details, including preparing your cue, getting enough rest, and plotting out directions to the tournament so that you’ll have enough time to get there without being rushed. Develop a mental pre-game mindset. Don’t leave things to chance, but instead make sure you know the basics when it comes to imagery, cue words, self-talk, and bounce-back tips. Go through a structured pre-game practice routine. The more you are in control, the less stress you will experience. What this means is that having a specific preshooting routine will help you feel comfortable in your surroundings and leave you less time to look around and become nervous noticing other ringers signing up for the tournament. Walk through resiliency strategies. While we never want to think we’ll ever miss another shot, the reality is that we will (in fact, we’ll miss lots of them in our lifetime!). The key is to think ahead of time how you will respond and regroup the first time you miss a shot that you shouldn’t, thereby preventing “mental meltdowns” that result in you missing more than a shot (in most cases that kills it for the entire tournament). By having a comfortable routine that allows you to step away, breathe, and normalize the situation you will be far more likely to make the next shot and start a new run, compared to allowing the emotions of the situation take you away from your game.
A little preparation can go a long, long way when it comes to developing the confidence needed to maximize your pool playing. Take note of the things that make you comfortable and confident, and look for ways to replicate those behaviors as often as possible.

We play one of the most precise games in the world. In pool, missing your aim angle by one or two degrees is sometimes enough to make you miss the shot. Missing position by a fraction of an inch can sometimes cost us a game. There is always a higher level of precision available. You can pocket a ball, but a better player can pocket that ball in a specific portion of the pocket. You can get position for your next shot, but a better player can get closer position or a better angle. You have pretty good speed control, but guess what – somebody else has better, more precise speed control. So, one way to get better, no matter what your current level, is to find ways to become more precise. The following are nine physical things to check or try to move toward more precision: 1. Flatter cue – Sidespin makes the cueball curve. The more elevated the butt of your cue, and the more sidespin, the more curve. This is fine if you’re planning on it, but devastating if you’re not. Lots of good players know better, but don’t realize they could elevate less. Get your stick down to a finger thickness above the rail whenever possible. 2. Shorter bridge – Think of your bridge as a fulcrum (a pivot point). Any side-to-side wobble error you might have in the back of your stroke shows up in side-to-side tip movement at the cueball. The further that pivot point is from the cueball, the more error shows up at impact. The pros get away with their long bridges because they have very straight, very grooved strokes. Sink about a million balls, and your stroke will be that straight too. Meanwhile, trade off some of that 16” bridge for some accuracy. 3. Snug bridge – Sure, you have a good, versatile closed loop bridge. But is it absolutely solid? Your bridge should be a rock. Once you are in position, it should have no motion and there should be no way for the stick to slop around in the bridge. You can make bridge improvements your whole pool career. Shake it a little, snug it in different ways, make it broad & stable, change your wrist angle a degree or two, put more pressure on it. 4. Come to a full stop at the cueball – Before you take your shot, come to a full stop at the front of your stroke and check your

contact point on the cueball. Are you going to hit it precisely where you intended? You can see this much more clearly when you stop. Adjust your bridge to make micro-corrections to the tip placement. Aim with tip close to cueball – When you bring your tip near the cueball, make sure you are actually bringing the tip close to the ball. If you are three inches from the cueball, your judgment about where the tip is actually going to hit the ball is suspect. Since your swing is an arc (like a pendulum), the tip is not going to move forward in a straight line. The closer you bring your tip, the more likely you will hit where you think you’ll hit. Test this by bringing the tip to a stop and then slowly pushing the stick forward until you touch the cueball. You might be astonished at how far away you were. Try for under an inch. Short stroke – Long, swoopy strokes may be beautiful, but they are not easy to control. Sometimes it pays to take a very short hit stroke. If it’s a difficult, highpressure shot where speed is not a big concern, you might try the short stroke. It’s harder to go off your aim line when the stroke is only a few inches. Make the ball. More athletic stance – Your stance should be unwavering. Once you are in position, there should be zero motion in your stance. Many players are moving a little, and are not aware of it. Try taking a more athletic stance. More distance between your feet. No locked knee joints. No squatting. Reasonably balanced weight distribution side-to-side and front-to-back. Feel like a stable tripod. Eyeglasses – Yes, there is a good thing about eyeglasses. You can use the top of the frame or lenses to see when your eyes are off level. If your eyes are tilted, it’s very hard to aim accurately. You may be surprised to see how much your head tilt varies. Tip shape – Your tip shape (how curved is it) determines how much spin you get for how far the shaft is displaced from the center of the cueball. A dime radius tip (same curve as a dime and more sharply curved than a nickel) gives more spin with a given offset, but requires far more precision from the player to get consistent spin. It also takes more frequent maintenance to keep that shape. Use a nickel radius unless you are a very advanced player.

NO MASSE’ SHOTS ALLOWED This month shot is harder than it looks and tests your ability in shooting straight and hit the Cue Ball exactly where you intend. Let’s start by setting it up: place the Cue Ball anywhere inside the square X area. However, I recommend using the position suggested in my diagram. Freeze the 1-ball (the Yellow Ball) to the CB making sure their line of center aims at the 3-Ball (the Red one) as for pocketing it in pocket F.
STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
Prior to that, place the 3-Ball at the 1st diamond from pocket E and at about ½ ball from the rail. Another ball (the Green Ball) needs to lay in front of side pocket E at about 1-ball distance from the rail.

The 10-Ball is placed by corner pocket D and you can always freeze an extra ball (the Pink one) to it to allow yourself a bigger margin of error. The CB-1 line of centers should not only aim for pocketing the 3-Ball but also to have the 1-Ball hit the right half of the Green Ball. When I was growing up and learning the game, most poolrooms did not allow masse shots. Had I known this shot, I could have had an extra chance to win a 9- or 10-Ball game. If you apply a precise hit without any unwanted English, the CB and the 1-Ball will travel forward together until the latter will contact the Green Ball and sink into pocket E. The Green Ball will obviously move out of the way while the CB, still rich with backspin, will still slide forward. Therefore, once the CB hits the red 3-Ball, hopefully making it into pocket D, will draw back and pocket the 10-ball. It helps to remind that it is legal to shoot into an object ball which is frozen to the Cue Ball, which makes this shot a “fancy” one rather than a “tricky” one!

Here is a draw drill from Willie Mosconi’s book “Winning Pocket Billiards.” It will teach you precise control of the distance and angle you get with soft draw off a near-by object ball. This is especially useful for picking apart clusters of balls and for playing some safes where you need to draw over to an exact spot to hide the cue ball. It is one of the first drills I practiced and I still find it useful to test how the cloth and cue ball work on an unfamiliar table. Let’s start with the easy version first. Put three balls near the side pocket as shown in the diagram. You begin with cue ball in hand. You must pocket the balls in order in the side pocket and the cue ball is not allowed to touch a cushion or any second ball on any shot. The successive positions are shown for a good clearance of the three balls. Here are some suggestions if you have trouble starting up on this drill. First, you need to strive for the perfect angle on the next ball with each ball you pocket. You need a little angle so you can move the cue ball sideways for the next ball, but not so much angle you can’t stop the cue ball from going too far sideways. I find that leaving the cue ball and object ball pointed straight at the pocket point P is ideal. This gives you a visible position target. Second, staying close to the balls is much better than trying to play the shot from the middle of the table. When you are that far back it’s hard to keep the required draw on the cue ball with a soft shot and a firm shot is likely to take you too far down the table. Third is that you need to become an expert at cheating the pocket. Most of the time when playing you want to send the ball to the center of the pocket so that you have margin for error to both the left and right. These shots are so short that you can give up some pocketing precision to make maneuvering the cue ball easier. If you get perfectly straight on a ball, just put it in the left side of the pocket so you can move on to the next ball. But be careful! You still need to put the object ball in the right part of the pocket or the speed of the cue ball to the right will be off. Lastly, you need to learn how side spin can help you achieve position with this kind of shot. Usually side spin is used only on the cushions, but here side spin helps with either creating or killing the cut angle. For example, if you had too much angle on the 1 ball, right English would let you hit the object ball much fuller and still get it to go to the pocket. This technique works best if the cue ball is close to the object ball, so don’t expect it to help much if the cue ball is in the middle of the table. If you get on the wrong side of the object ball it’s possible to use that same right English to bring you to the right but you need to
elevate the cue stick to about 30 degrees so you are playing a soft swerve shot. Similarly elevated left English can hold the cue ball if you have too much cut angle. For these shots, seek out a player who can demonstrate them if you don’t get them right away -- this is an advanced technique. Three balls should be easy. If you can do five sets in a row, move on to four balls. When you do five in a row with four add another ball and so on. I’ve labeled the group of seven as “medium” because if you really master soft draw you should be able to get to 10. Besides having to do more consecutive shots the shots become harder as the balls are placed farther from the pocket so they can all fit. It’s up to you to figure out how close to the pocket and each other is optimum for the starting positions.

Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.
Recently one of my students asked, “How can I erase the memory of a missed shot and not let it create selfdoubt for the rest of my match? Whenever I play a bad match I immediately start to think about how much that’s affected my chances of winning that particular tournament. Negative thoughts start to creep in…it’s hard to rebound from a poor performance.” As a coach, I usually tell my students that thoughts are just thoughts and to treat them as such. When your brain produces negativity, a single thought doesn’t have the power to become an emotion that will affect your overall performance. However, the more time you devote to that particular thought, the more you empower it to change your overall mood. Negative thoughts generally lead to performance anxiety, which can dramatically decrease your overall level of play. Below you will find 4 ways to eliminate negative thoughts you are likely to encounter after missing a ball or making a costly position error. 1. Respond to the challenge: Professional players tend to respond to the challenge after a poor performance. On the other hand, losers react. It is important to become aware of your feelings and not let them overpower you. If you miss an easy shot, you can expect a negative thought to enter your head. This is actually

very normal. Good pool players pay attention to their negative thoughts, and give themselves time to respond, instead of just reacting. 2. Keep your thoughts in the present moment: Many students have found that trying to clear their mind and focus on their breathing can help. Other options include concentrating on your preshot routine or focusing on one of your 5 senses (because your current senses only exist in the present). Good players understand that negativity only exists from memories of past performances or the fear of future ones. If you embed yourself into the present, then you will be more likely to exhibit a positive attitude throughout your match. 3. Display good body language: There’s definitely a relationship between good posture and mood. If you continually frown and put yourself in a hunched over position while you are sitting in the chair, you will eventually start to embrace negative thoughts. Conversely, if you sit with your shoulders back and smile, you’ll feel more confident. When you think you are a slump, notice your body language and correct it as the need arises. 4. Start over: • Replace negative thoughts with something positive. Focus on something completely unrelated to pool, like your favorite sport or restaurant. • If you feel uncomfortable while you are down on the shot, get up and restart your pre-shot routine. • Focus on one stroke thought (for example, you might focus on putting a really good pause into every backswing). Try these mental game techniques and I believe you find something that will help you rebound from a poor match performance! Another thing to remember is that your first match does not have to set the tone for the entire tournament. Many great tournament performances have started with a loss. Work on rebounding and stick to your mental plan throughout the tournament.

Guimond and Espinosa Capitalize It was nearly an all-Austin shoot-out in both divisions, as local talent, Kevin Guimond, took charge of the 45-player, open 9-ball division, going undefeated to win his first title on the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. Guimond slid by Austin’s Jimmy Krone, 7-6, in the first set of the true, double elimination final, claiming his first tour victory. In the 52-player, amateur 9-ball division, hometown favorite, Justin Espinosa, faced off with newcomer, Sam Devita, claiming the first set, 7-0, and his second amateur division title. On May 6th-7th, 2017, Skinny Bob’s Billiards in Round Rock, Texas, along with tour title sponsor Poison by Predator Cues and sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, and Realtor Jimmy Jenkins, facilitated another successful event for the players of the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. The tour would like to thank room owners John and Sue Cielo for their continued support of the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour, now eight years running.
Espinosa, 5-4, Sidari, 5-0. As the one-loss side was winding down, the hot seat match was underway, with Kevin Guidmond taking a tremendous lead over Krone, and closing the set out, 7-1. Wright headed into his eighth match on the one-loss, and was struck down by Devita, 5-2, who in turn, was eliminated by Krone, 5-3. Krone earned himself an opportunity to avenge his hot seat defeat, and Guimond was ready. Guimond came out swinging, and Krone answered back, game for game. In the end, Guimond pulled ahead, ending the first set, 7-6, to win his first Poison Lone Star Tour title! In the amateur division, Justin Espinosa logged wins over Ray Navarro, Monk Jiminez, 5-0, Daniel Perez, 5-1, and Mark Wilson, 5-2, while Jim Miller ousted Cliff Johnson, Sam Lockley, 5-0, Paul Jobe, 5-4, and John Wright, 5-4. Sam Devita made his way with wins over Elijah Hughes, Gerald Holland, 5-4, Pat Castro, 5-4, and Brian Rosenbaum, 5-0,
The open and amateur 9-ball division action kicked-off Saturday afternoon, and brought back the final 16 from each division, with modified races, on Sunday. In the open 9-ball division, Kevin Guimond was on his way, with wins over David Henson, 7-4, Matt Wong, 7-2, and John Eagle, 7-4, while Houston’s Masahiro Nakahara ousted John Hedgepath, 7-3, Paul Jobe, 7-3, Brian Rosenbaum, 7-6, and Josh Dordek, 7-2. Jimmy Krone took down Pat Castro, 7-3, John Wright, 7-3, Ray Navarro, 7-3, and Jason Harkrider, while Phil Sidari bested Ed Ambros, 7-5, Rex Cour, 7-2, and Dennis Carlson, 7-6. As the final four took shape, on the west side, Wright was on fire, eliminating Hughes, 7-0, Jim Miller, 7-6, Wong, 7-6, Casey Crews, 5-2, and Jason Harkrider, 5-0, reaching the final four on the one-loss side. Rosenbaum ended Escobedo, 7-6, followed by Dennis Carlson, 5-0, while Justin Espinosa took out Pat Castro, 7-1, Sam Lockley, 5-0, and Josh Dordek, 5-2. Sam Devita eliminated Kim Pierce, Daniel Perez, 5-4, and John Eagle, 5-3. It was down to the final eight. On the winners’ side, Guimond made quick work of Nakahara, 7-1, and Krone overwhelmed Sidari, 7-3. West side action witnessed Wright defeat Rosenbaum, 5-1, and Nakahara, 5-3, earning his seventh straight match win, while Devita took down

Rounding out the final four on the one-loss side, Nakahara was on a role, eliminating Johnny Cope, 5-3, Jobe, 5-1, and Smith, 5-0. Rosenbaum eliminated Perez, 5-4, and Pat Castro ended Wilson, 5-2. Sage Serda made a stand, eliminating Santiago Garza, 5-3, Rehm, 5-4, and Wright, 5-4. On the winners’ side, it was Dordek over Devita, 5-2, and Espinosa over Miller, 5-3. On the west side, Nakahara secured his fifth, consecutive match, besting Miller, 5-1, as Devita overtook Serta, by the same score. In hot seat match, Dordek took a back seat to Espinosa, 5-2, while Devita ended Nakahara’s run, also by the same score. Devita went on to eliminate Dordek, to meet Espinosa in the finals. The Austin favorite wasted little time, overcoming Devita in the first set, 7-0, acquiring his second, Poison Lone Star Tour title! Watson, who joined the tour in November 2016, fell short in her first outing, finishing 9th, but made up for it in only her second start on tour. She secured the hot seat match, taking down the tour’s current #1 ranked player, Gail Eaton, 7-6. In the finals, she defeated #2 ranked, Austin’s Jennifer Yo, 7-4, notching her belt with a first-time, Gulf Coast Tour victory. Teenage phenom, Lynch, suffered a first-round loss at the hands of Loretta Lindgren, and made her bid on the one-loss side with wins over Diana Cardona, 5-3, and Marilina Nieves, 5-1, but was sent home by Hardin, 5-3. Carter secured west-side wins over Pinkston, 5-3, Rebecca Arcangeli, 5-4, and Keithley, 5-1, before falling to Hardin, 5-2. The Gulf Coast Tour welcomes its newest member, Cindy Barthel, who also achieved her highest tournament finish to date (5th-6th), at this event. Jennifer Dooley and Megan Hardin booked their highest finishes as well, 4th and 5th-6th, respectively. Congratulations to all those who reached a milestone at this event. The Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour is open to players of all ages and skill levels, however, the top 32 WPBA Exempt Professionals are not permitted to participate. The tantalizing allure of many events in which to play throughout a week of pool camaraderie and great dates convenient to most independent leagues at the end of their seasonal league play fueled an 8% jump in entries at the 13th edition of the Omega Billiards ACS National Championships, produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS), May 13-20, 2017 and held at the Tropicana Las Vegas. The ACS added $40,500 to the total prize fund. Action began with 9-ball and 8-ball Singles and Scotch Doubles play, as Frank DeCastecker (Moline, IL) outpaced the Men’s 9-Ball Singles field in this handicapped format to march undefeated to the title match – outdueling his final’s higher-rated opponent Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) 7-8 for the crown. On the Women’s 9-Ball Singles side, Connie Eddins (Portsmouth, VA) claimed the hot seat but could not take advantage of the two-game spot/set against the powerful game of Gail Eaton (Bourne, TX), as Gail grabbed the laurels 7-4/7-1. In the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles undefeated David Martinez (San Antonio, TX) made short work of Peter Bidne (Crystal, MN) 4-1 in the finals, while Lisa Bailey (San Antonio, TX) absconded with a two-set finals win over Patty Sangster (Hamilton, ON) 4-2/4-1 in the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles division. Dennis Orcollo Congratulations to Robocop Dennis Orcollo for winning the Buffalo’s Billiards Pro Classic Professional One Pocket May 24-28, 2017 in Jefferson, LA! Dennis went undefeated in this 16-man tournament $2k entry field which held some of the most notable names in the game today. Dennis faced Chip Compton in this true double-elimination final and played amazingly to capture the title with a 5-1 victory. Excellent 2nd place finish for Chip Compton, played some incredible pool. During his journey, he defeated Corey Deuel, young gun Sky Woodward and Josh the Beast Roberts to get into the Hotseat match. He faced Dennis in the hotseat match, but it seemed Dennis was playing some spectacular pool and ended up winning the match with a 5-2 score. Chip now having been sent west, had to face the Lion Alex Pagulayan for a chance to get back to Dennis. Alex had just defeated the Magician Efren Reyes in a hill hill barn burner just before this to get there. The match between Alex and Chip went back and forth, swapping game for game. Toward the end, we were looking at a hill hill thriller match. Both players seemed to be struggling a bit to close out the final game. In the end, Chip won the battle after running 10 and out to win the match. It was a very exciting match to watch and a well-earned 3rd place finish for Alex Pagulayan. Mr. Efren Reyes earned a notable and hard fought 4th place finish in this stellar field of players, Great job everyone!

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (May 17, 2017) —Thousands of APA members made their way to the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino to compete for nearly $700,000 in cash and prizes at the APA Poolplayer Championships. The Poolplayer Championships consisted of both the 8-Ball Classic and 9-Ball Shootout, as well as the 8-Ball and 9-Ball Doubles Championships and the Wheelchair Championship. The final round of the 9-Ball Shootout featured three championship matches, one for each Skill Level Tier, with two shooters in each tier competing for $10,000 in cash and prizes. In the Green Tier, Michelle Templeton of Carbondale, IL., defeated Robin Hicks of Terry, MS. In the White Tier, Rene’ Maurice of Sudbury, Ont., defeated Mark Lyons of Central Islip, NY In the Black Tier, John Pasquarella of San Diego, CA., defeated Matthew Walling of Ruffin, SC. Mary Nicholas of Woodstock, AL., received the Sportsmanship Award in the 9-Ball Shootout. Each of the three Champions received a prize package worth $10,000.
