Why the June 2016 Issue was not printed After the May Issue was completed and sent out. My beautiful wife Mary had to have Breast Cancer Surgery. All went well with the surgery so we thought. Three weeks later we were to find out that there was an infection in the breast so a second surgery had to be performer to irrigate or remove the infection. It doesn’t end there. On the first of June we were returning home from an appointment and while entering our residence, Mary collapsed and fell to the floor. We would later find out that the broken femur was caused by the Breast Cancer that had gone to the Lymph Nodes and had gone to her femur and that caused the break. The doctors didn’t operate for 6 days because of the labs. The good news is Mary is in rehab and will be coming home by the second week of July. She is improving daily and taking medicines for the cancer and to keep her labs right. The July issue is results from May and June. The August issue will be out on time and everything will return to the schedule we have previously done. If you want to find out more about what happened please go to my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DonAkerlow We would like to thank everyone who sent their wishes, prayers and comments through this extreme difficult time that our family is going through. We are living one day at a time with hope for tomorrow. Mary has been strong and resilent through all of this. She has a positive attitude and like I have said to her many times, Don’t let the Bastard win! God Bless You

Andy Jethwa
Jim Bishop went undefeated at the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour event, held on May 14th-15th, 2016, decimating the 64-player amateur 9-ball division, besting Houston’s Pete Charles in the final round, 6-5. Currently stationed in Houston for work, Bishop hales from Mobile, Alabama, and although he’s played in previous Lone Star events, he has never actually won an event, until now. Former tour champion, Andy Jethwa, overcame APA Nationals Champion, Ernesto Bayaua, in the final, 7-6, earning Jethwa his second, consecutive open division win this year.
The event was hosted by Ariana’s in Houston, Texas, and along with tour sponsors Poison by Predator Cues (poisonbilliards.com), Delta-13 Rack (delta-13.com), Ozone Billiards (ozonebilliards. com), and the APA of North Harris County (facebook. com/apanorthharriscounty), facilitated a very successful event. Ariana’s catered to 74 Poison Lone Star Tour players (along with 31 Gulf Coast Tour women) adding a generous $1,000 to the prize fund, offering free play on all their bar tables, and providing free food the entire event. The tour would like to thank Ariana’s owners, Minh and Bill Hammond, and their entire staff, for their gracious hospitality, and years of continued support!
With 105 players in the building and only 12 bar tables, action was slow moving on Saturday, and races were modified on Sunday in order for the event to conclude at a reasonable hour. In the Ernesto Bayaua amateur 9-ball division, Jim Bishop put on a solid performance, taking down a list of event hopefuls on his way to the hot seat, including Ryan Garcia, Josh White, Rocky Skuca, 6-2, and Johnny Griffin, 6-2. Junior player, Jacob Watson, bested Curt Bovenzi, 6-4, and Kenneth Price, 6-1, to meet Bishop in the final four on the winners’ side. Pete Charles was on a roll, logging wins over Mike Singleton, Jose Gonzales, 7-1, Danny Roland, 6-3, and Brock Temel, 6-4. In similar form, Mark Wanner made his way to the final four, ousting Chase Wheeler, David Leal, 7-6, Tommy Aramburo, 6-1, and

Brandon Bilbo, 6-5. As the final four shaped up on the winners’ side, players were making their way through the one-loss side. After losing his first match to Laredo’s Martin Ramos, Ray Reeves won an incredible 6 consecutive matches, including victories over Bruce Solf, 5-0, Adam Cooper, 4-1, Charlie Jenkins, 4-2, and Kenneth Price, 4-3. Reeves was stopped short by Johnny Griffin, 4-2. After a third round loss to Bishop, Rocky Scuka won four in a row, eliminating Chuck Adams, Bryan Tilley, 4-1, Brandon Bilbo, 4-2, and Lester Foy, 4-1.
Jim Bishop
Back on the east side, Charles overcame Wanner, 6-3, while Bishop sent Watson west, 6-1. It was a harrowing battle for the hot seat, as Bishop narrowly escaped Charles, 6-5. On the west side, Griffin defeated Wanner, 4-1, while Skuca ended Watson, 4-3. Griffin eliminated Skuca, 4-1, but was ousted by Charles, 4-3. And with that win, Charles earned himself a shot at redemption. As the rematch between Bishop and Charles commenced, it appeared to be a similar “tug-of-war” session, as each took turns executing strategic safeties and cinching any open tables. Once again,
on Poison Lone Star Tour
Bishop came out ahead, denying Charles, 6-5. Congratulations to Jim Bishop, who went undefeated to secure his first-ever, Poison Lone Star Tour victory!
In the 60-player open 9-ball division, Andy Jethwa was on a quest to conquer. His path of destruction included wins over Jim Bishop, Kris Modisette, 9-6, Martin Ramos, 7-2, and Mark Wanner, 7-1. Johnny Griffin plowed through Will Felder, Mark Cardenas, Alex Cardenas, 7-2, and Chris Thompson, 7-2, to meet Jethwa in the final four winners’ side. Ernesto Bayaua took the bull by the horns, defeating Lester Foy, 7-5, Chuck Adams, 7-4, and Brock Temel, 7-2. After recovering from serious health issues, Mike Singleton rejoined the tour and was back on track, besting Kenneth Price, Rene Rodriguez, 9-3, Jacob Watson, 7-3, and Tony Benestante. As the final four on the winners’ side rounded out, Watson rolled on the west side eliminating M. Cardenas, 5-4, Wanner, 5-4, and Guzik, 5-2. After a second round loss to Brock Temel, 9-7, Chase Wheeler won 6 consecutive matches, racking up wins over Adeana Sanchez, 5-0, Brandon Bilbo, 5-4, Martin Ramos, 5-3, Ryan Garcia, 5-2, Tony Benestante, 5-4, and Dalton Riley, 5-4. On the east side, it was Bayaua over Singleton, and Jethwa over Griffin, 7-6. With numerous open division titles to their credit, Bayaua and Jethwa fought equally hard for the hot seat, with Jethwa finishing ahead, 7-6. On the one-loss side, Griffin met and defeated Wheeler, 5-1, and Bayaua eliminated Watson, 5-2. Bayaua went on to eliminate Griffin, 5-2, and Singleton, 5-1, for a Jethwa reckoning. Once again, the two faced-off, exhibiting extreme collection and focus. As the champions traded games, in the end, the result remained the same. Jethwa defeated Bayaua, 7-6, securing his second, consecutive tour victory of the 2016 season! The Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour would like to officially welcome all the new players who attended this event. The next PLSBT event will be held June 11th-12th at Bogies Billiards located at 3040 FM 1960 E., Houston, Texas 77073. Let’s take a close look at how we line up our body with the shot. There are a number of very simple body alignments that can make it easier to shoot straight. If you’ve been playing a long time and are pretty good, you’re probably already doing most of them. This is worth a close look. If you’re off somewhere, making the change should make a difference for you. Look at any shot. As you stand behind the cueball, you can see “the line of the shot.” That’s the line the cueball must travel to hit the object ball or rail (or other target) precisely where you intend. How we choose that exact line is related to what we want to accomplish, our current ability level, and the various aiming adjustments we make to compensate for throw, english, squirt, etc. Choosing that line is not the issue here. The issue at hand is “What’s the best (simplest, most comfortable, most effective, most consistent, easy to remember, easy to check) way to arrange our body around the stick to produce a good, straight stroke and send the cueball down the line of the shot?” Our job as pool players is to produce a consistent, straight, fluid stroke that moves the cueball down the shot line at the right speed and with the right spin. What I’d like you to think about is making good use of your skeleton. We can simplify our job if we align our skeleton well. The better we align our skeleton, the less we have to rely on muscle and various swoops and on-the-fly stroke/aim adjustments. The point I want to drive home is that if we line up well, it’s way easier to hit what we’re aiming at, and to do it consistently and effortlessly. OK. We know where the line of the shot is. Now, imagine there is a vertical plane (a wall) running through that line. There are a bunch of body parts we’re going to align with that plane: • Bridge – This is obvious, but make sure your bridge is planted precisely, and is not pulling to one side or the other. • Grip – Again, obvious. Make sure your grip is as light as possible. The tighter you grip, the more you’ll tend to pull the stick off line during the stroke. • Stroke Arm – This is a big one. Your entire arm – forearm, elbow, upper arm, and shoulder should
Rackem
OnTheBreakNews.com
be in the vertical plane. Watch out for wrists curled in or out, elbow tucked in or flying out on the hit stroke. Have someone check you out from front and back. You might be off vertical a little, and not be able to see it or feel it yourself. • Aiming Eye – Obviously, you want to be able to see directly down the line of the shot. Don’t worry about which eye is dominant – just make sure you feel you are seeing straight down the line. Check to make sure your eyes are level. Many players (especially older ones) bend lower than their flexibility allows, so their head tilts a bit. • Chin – Try to get your chin directly over the stick. How can you get your eye and your chin over the stick, and keep your eyes level? Try turning your face (just a little) toward the appropriate side. Check yourself by lowering your chin to the stick once in a while. • Back Foot – The stick should generally run over the top of your back foot. If you find you can’t do that, or can’t get your eye over the cue, your foot placement might be the culprit. With your back foot angled forward a little, try moving the front foot forward a foot or so and out to the side a foot or so from where the back foot is. This will put you in a pretty neutral position. Adjust from there until you can see down the cue, and you feel balanced and comfortable. These are guidelines. Since everyone’s body is different, not everyone will find that all of these alignments are workable. Very tall, very short, and very heavy players usually need some adjustments. A good instructor can help with the adjustments. This approach is intended to get most players arranged into an alignment that makes it easier to see down the line and send the cueball down the line. These alignments can help you stroke more consistently and with less interference from muscle and from limbs that naturally want to move in some direction other than straight. As with any change in your fundamentals, you may experience a decline in your game for a while, but if the change is a good one and you stick with it, you’ll come back stronger. Let’s get straight – and get better.

THE GREAT ESCAPE 2
STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I personally like this shot a lot and like most of the shots I prefer, it can come in handy in regular pool games. If we master how to approach the tips of the pockets, a new world of solutions will open up for us. Place the Cue Ball frozen to the long-rail jaw of the corner pocket, just like shown in the diagram. Surround it with 5-6 Obstacle Balls placed in a circle that roughly joins the 2 closest diamonds to that pocket. Place your Object Ball (the Yellow Ball in the diagram) by the opposite corner pocket. On a 9-foot table with regular size pockets as well as on 7-foot Diamond tables, you can use your regular, full length cue for this shot. On most 7-foot tables or on 9-foot tables with shimmed pockets, you may need to use your jump cue. A sharp aim is the major requirement to successfully and precisely jump out of this tough situation and pocket the OB at the same time. As you will notice, this time I used the lower diagram not only to show you where to hit the CB but also how to aim into the tip of the pocket. In this shot you need to have the tip of the opposite jaw at exactly 1/3 of the CB’s diameter. Then jack up your cue by 25⁰ circa and use a 2 o’clock and 2 tips of English on the CB, with a 2.5 speed stroke. I recommend using a close bridge for more control and accuracy and, most importantly, just poking the CB with a quick snap of your wrist, as you don’t really have any room to follow-through. The CB should jump off the tip of the pocket, over the Obstacle Balls and hit the first rail just above the side pocket in order to hit two more rails and pocket the OB in the corner. By using the same principle and slightly adjusting our aim, we can send the CB just about anywhere on the table. So start practicing right away to impress your friends and beat your opponents.

At the start of a first lesson with a new student, the first thing I do is size up their basic ability and look for obvious problems. You might think I could just ask them, but pool players for the most part seem unable to see their own weaknesses. In that regard, they’re pretty much like all people. Anyway, a recent student was doing fairly well with the preliminary shots until we got to the follow shot in the diagram. The goal is to pocket the 1 ball and follow down to the end rail, leaving the cue ball within a diamond of the cushion. When I watched from pocket P with my head just above the pocket, everything looked pretty good: straight cue movement, head over the shot and still, and a nice even swing, very little body movement. But the student was having a real hard time getting the cue ball down to the cushion. Even with a firm stroke the cue ball would sometimes drift forward only a foot or two. This lack of cue ball action with good stick speed can only happen on this shot if the tip is not hitting the cue ball high enough. To see how high the student was hitting the ball, I moved to S to see the height of the tip on the cue ball. The problem was visible immediately -- more accurately, I couldn’t see where the student was going to hit the ball and neither could he. When the student was done with his warm-up strokes and about to take the final back stroke and power stroke, he stopped the cue at the point shown in the diagram, back from the ball maybe three or four inches. In fact the warm-ups never got any closer than that. From that far back, the spot the tip is going to hit on the cue ball is just guess work. In order to achieve accuracy in position play, you need to control within the thickness of a dime where the tip hits the ball because that is going to determine how much spin you put on the cue ball. The easy way to see where the tip will hit the ball is to bring the tip up to the ball at the end of your warm-ups and stop it within a quarter-inch of the ball. Then if you bring the stick straight back and straight through on the power stroke the tip ends where it began and you have excellent control over your spin. A second benefit is that the final stroke is a lot more like your warm-up strokes if you don’t have to add an extra three inches to the motion. Here’s a practice for you. See if you can shoot the shot as shown and follow to within six inches of the end rail five times in a row. Notice that the cue ball is a little less than a diamond from the object ball. Try the draw shot as well to leave the cue ball within

a diamond of the other end rail. If you have trouble with consistency on these shots, you may have an approach problem. Have a friend stand at S and tell you when you are in “ready” position how many quarter inches (or tip thicknesses) the tip is from the cue ball. Work to get that down to no more than a half-inch of clearance. If you have no friends handy, and your depth perception is lacking as well, get a small mirror and stand it on it’s side at M to let you see from the side while you’re in position. I found a small mirror with a protective plastic rim in the cosmetics department that is perfect for the job. When it comes to accurate English, you want to be close to your work.

TOURNAMENT PREPARATION Good preparation is about having a consistent warm-up routine for your body and mind before match play. Be sure to follow the steps below to prepare yourself for success:
1.

Fuel for Battle: The first thing that you need to consider is eating a healthy meal. You also need to drink plenty of water—it has been proven that being dehydrated lowers your ability to perform well, and if you’re thirsty, it’s time to give your body what it’s asking for. It is also important to eat the right amount of food. You don’t want to be hungry, but you don’t want to be too full either. You should eat foods that are healthy for you. Snacks like apples, bananas, or nuts will help maintain positive energy levels. 2. Warm-Up Mentally: As you are driving to the poolroom, play through a match in your mind and imagine running out. Don’t start thinking about the score; just imagine what it feels like to play a positive game of pool where you put a good stroke on each and every shot. The idea is to “ingrain” positive images into your subconscious, which will give you a better chance of making those images into a reality when you play. 3. Follow a Consistent Routine: Watch any of the top professionals and their pre-match routines. They always prepare for success and you need to as well. I strongly recommend following the same plan over and over. If it takes you fifteen minutes to warm up, be sure to get to the table early so that you can get yourself in stroke. 4. Warm-Up with Easy Shots: Simple shots struck with a medium speed are a great way to start coordinating both your physical and mental abilities. Always remember to visualize what you plan to do and try to start developing a feel for your surroundings. One of your primary goals during warm-up should be to develop positive feelings. 5. Develop a “Feel” for the Table: As you warm up with simple shots, try to play as many different shots as you can from a variety of cut angles. This will help you develop positive feelings as you start to get your creative
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
juices flowing. This will also help you get familiar with the speed of the table. 6. No Mechanical Thoughts: Resist your temptation to start thinking about stroke mechanics. You need to start playing, and that involves visualizing shots and trusting in your stroke. Honestly, there’s no correlation between your warm-up and how you are going to finish. 7. other thing that you need to do is practice the pre-shot routine that you’ll be using before each and every shot. This sets a solid foundation for a high-quality performance and is the only thing you can completely control while you are at the table. A good pre-shot routine also gives you something to focus on other than external distractions. 8. Have a Positive Attitude: This component requires for you to have fun and enjoy yourself. Tell yourself that you’re going to love playing no matter how well you play. After all, pool isn’t your profession. If you don’t have to win in order to pay your bills, there really shouldn’t be any pressure on how you perform. 9. No Expectations: No matter how well you might have been playing, you must understand that sometimes it’s just not meant to be. The balls are loyal to no one and sometimes they just won’t let you win. 10. Focus on the Process: The fact that you have no idea what’s going to happen during your next match is actually pretty exciting. The only real thing within your control is the process of putting a good stroke on the cue ball time after time. Following your pre-shot routine should be one of your primary goals for match play. Following a strict process will distract you from things that could negatively impact your performance.

Karen Corr Turns Heads Again as She Enters and Wins Yet Another JPNEWT Tour Stop!
l-r: Karen Corr, Melissa Jenkins, Meredith Lynch, Kia Sidbury, Sharon O’Hanlon, Sueyen Rhee, Linda Shea
Once again, heads turned as Karen Corr showed up for the fourth tour stop of the J.Pechauer NorthEast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT). Triple Nines was the setting with the owner, Stan, allowing the ladies to virtually take over his room for more than twelve hours on Saturday, June 11th, and most of the day Sunday, June 12th. Twenty-three players entered to test their skills, in the $1,000 added event ($500 from Coins of the Realm, and $500 from Triple Nines). It was luck of the draw that newcomer Dina DiGregorio, playing only her second event, was paired up against Karen Corr for their first match. Losing to Corr, Dina took it in stride, and eked out a hill/hill victory over her next opponent, Kathy Friend, on the B-side, only to lose to Teri Thomas, after a long and arduous safety battle. Karen blasted through the field, and gave up only five racks in her first three matches--Dina (7-0), Judie Wilson (7-2), and Sueyen Rhee (7-3); until she was paired up with tour director Linda Shea, who managed five racks of her own, before she too was sent to the B-side. On the other half of the A bracket, Kia Sidbury was soundly defeating all comers, including Gina Hartman (7-3), Brit Rapp (7-2), and Nicole Fleming (7-4), when she got stalled in a hill/hill match with Sharon O’Hanlon. Kia squeaked out a win against Sharon, to face Karen on Sunday, where she scored one game, before Karen took the hot seat. Meanwhile, Sueyen Rhee, having been defeated by Karen in the third round, narrowly defeated Heather Platter in a hill/hill match, and continued her climb back in the next four matches, with wins against Melissa Jenkins (7-2), Sharon O’Hanlon (7-2), Linda Shea (7-4), and Kia Sidbury (7-4), to face Karen Corr in the finals.

Linda Shea got three respectable wins, and Sharon O’Hanlon racked up two wins, before facing Sueyen Rhee on the B-side. Sharon succumbed to Sueyen first (7-2), and neither Linda, nor Kia Sidbury, were able to shake Sueyen out of her bid to face Karen again, both scoring four games each against her. It was no surprise that Karen dominated with a 7-3 victory over Sueyen, going undefeated again. As many of the ladies of JPNEWT will tell you, you always learn from playing Karen Corr, and all are hoping to learn enough to beat her. Thanks to Stan Nasiatka and Triple Nines Bar & Billiards for hosting this event! Thanks to all of our tour sponsors: J.Pechauer Custom Cues, Coins of the Realm, Britanya Rapp, and Ozone Billiards! It was another fiery start for Houston’s Ricki Casper who took the 31-player field by storm at the third Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour 9-ball event of 2016. Casper constructed a wave of destruction, taking down formidable WPBA Player Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce in the final, and going undefeated to win her second tour event of the season. The event was hosted by Ariana’s in Houston, Texas, and along with tour sponsors Delta-13 Rack www. delta-13.com, and the APA of North Harris County www.facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty, facilitated a very successful event. Ariana’s catered to 31 Gulf Coast Tour players, offering free play on all bar tables, and providing free food for the entire event. Back on the east side, Pierce defeated Roles, and it was Casper over Garland, 5-4. Casper went on to defeat Pierce for the hot seat, 5-4. On west side, Garland ousted Mundie, and Roles eliminated Payne, 4-1. Garland ended Roles, 4-2, but fell to Pierce, 4-1. With that victory, Pierce earned another shot at Casper, and the title. Gail Eaton Gail Eaton, aka “Virginia Slim”, took the Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour by storm during its WPBA 40th Anniversary Event held on June 11th, 2016. Eaton went undefeated, taking on the formidable Natalie Rocha in the finals, and claiming her first victory this season, 7-5. The Gulf Coast Tour hosted its fourth event of the year at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas, thanks to room owners David and Shannon Richardson, and tour sponsors Delta-13 Rack www. delta13.com, and the APA of North Harris County www.facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty. Some of the most talented women in semi-professional pool competed in this one-day event, on (8) 9’ Brunswick Gold Crown professional tables with Simonis Cloth, vying for a place in the Gulf Coast Tour winners’ circle. On the battle field, 2013 Gulf Coast Tour Champion, Gail Eaton, fought her way undefeated, through a distinguished field of talent. The road to the final four winners’ side saw Eaton claim wins over Mercedes Vasquez, 7-1, and Liz Yorek, 7-2, while Ricki Casper ousted Karen Reilly, Teresa Garland, 7-2, and Natalie Mans, 7-3. Kim Pierce, otherwise known as “Texas Heat”, turned up the flames with wins over Tam Trinh, 7-1, and Tangela Hunt, 7-0, while Natalie Rocha defeated Joyce Davis, 7-3, and Terry Petrosino, 7-2. On the one loss side, after losing her second match to Pierce, Trinh eliminated Reilly, 5-2, Tiffany Mundie, 5-2, Yorek, 5-3, and Mans, 5-3. Eaton, and looking for her second win on the Gulf Coast Tour. The finals pitted a former tour champion looking for her first win of the season, and a former event winner, in search of her second, career win. This match-up promised to be nothing short of intense. The final set commenced, as both players exhibited collection and focus, fighting equally hard for the win. When the smoke cleared, it was Eaton who pulled ahead to secure the match, 7-5. Congratulations to Gail Eaton on her first win of the season! In honor of the WPBA’s 40th Anniversary, 25-year WPBA veteran, Gail Eaton, gave a short, heart-felt speech during the players’ meeting about what it has meant to her to be a WPBA Player and Board Member, throughout the years. “It’s good to see people bringing friends, and keep supporting the events, and that feeds back in to the WPBA, and the more the organization can do for you” – Gail Eaton.

The Jennifer’s vs. Tara but Firecracker Freight Train Just Keeps on Rolling
Top 3 Finishers: (from left to right) Tara Williams, Jennifer Kraber, and Jennifer Yo On the weekend of May 18-19, 2016, OB Cues Ladies Tour made it to one of their favorite stops on the yearly tour calendar at Click’s Billiards in San Antonio. General Manager Miranda Dalka and her exceptional staff extended their awesome hospitality and services the entire two-day weekend. They were superb hosts to 35 players and a large group of fans, friends, and family members who came out to join in the weekend festivities. A strong contingent of players from all over Texas came to try their luck and brought out their best pool playing skills as all were vying for the $800 first place prize money. A big, big thank you to Click’s Billiards and Miranda for supporting the tour and we will most certainly be back next year. Also first and foremost a big high five and utmost thanks to our title sponsor OB Cues. OB Cues, our main sponsor since 2008, is one of the leading pool cues and shafts manufacturers in the world. They have a plethora of quality and intrinsically crafted products to complement your pool playing arsenal. Be sure to check them out at obcues.com---you won’t regret it! They are also made in the USA, in Plano, TX to be specific. Thank you OB Cues! To precede with the tournament updates, by day’s end on Saturday, the final eight ladies would continue their winning ways in the Main Event competition on Sunday. The final four in the winner’s bracket pitted the three Jennifer’s in the tournament, against the lone stand-out, Tara. Facing each other early Sunday was Jennifer Pavlovick (Grand Prairie) vs Tara Williams (Ft. Worth) and Jennifer Kraber (Austin) vs. Jennifer Yo (also of Austin). The four ladies returning on the one loss side were Terry Petrosino (Spring) vs. Kim Pierce (Austin) and Orietta Strickland (Dallas) vs. Natalie Mans (League City). 7th-8th finishers were Kim Pierce and Orietta Strickland. 5th-6th places went to Jennifer Pavlovick and Natalie Mans. 4th place winner was Terry Petrosino and 3rd place winner Jennifer Yo. Jennifer Pavlovick has had a couple of high finishes this year already and we hope to see her continued winning ways in more OB stops throughout this year. Good shooting Jennifer—keep up the great work! Tara Williams made her way through Saturday with wins over Barbara Wisdom (74), Corina Campbell (7-3), and Krystal West (7-0). On Sunday, she continued her undefeated run and to earn a spot at the hot seat with another win over Jennifer Pavlovick (7-0). On the other side of the winner’s bracket, Jennifer Yo was making her way through her Saturday matches, posting wins over some tough opponents. She had wins over Frances Marron (7-1), Michelle Cortez (7-6), and Kim Pierce (7-5). On Sunday morning, she continued her run besting Jennifer Kraber (7-6)

for her spot in the hot seat match. In the hot seat match, Tara jumped to a quick lead and didn’t look back, winning her spot in the finals against Jennifer Yo (7-3). For the 3rd place match, we knew Jennifer would be the victor but we didn’t know which one. Jennifer Kraber didn’t allow Jennifer Yo to keep as close as she had in the winner’s side match and defeated Jennifer Yo (7-3). This would then allow Tara the opportunity to challenge all of the Jennifer’s on Sunday. Big congratulations to Jennifer Yo for this being her highest finish to date in any OB stop. Jennifer was the 2015 OB Cues Ladies Tour Best Sportswoman recipient and we know that she is truly an asset to the tour and we wish her well in continued success in future OB events. In the finals, in the true double elimination format, Jennifer Kraber would need to beat Tara twice in order to win the event. Both players started out the match strong, but Tara prevailed to win her third tournament of the year. Congratulations to both ladies for a great event! With this third win in 2016 and the last two wins of 2015 for Tara, she broke her own consecutive win record with five wins in a row. Congratulations for an awesome accomplishment Tara! Keep on keepin’ on! Special recognition and thanks to OB Cues our main tournament sponsor. Cam Salim Gaisar Captures Omega Billiards Tour Title at Fox and Hound
To
3rd Nick Evans,
2nd Tony Sular,
On the weekend of June 4-5, the Omega Billiards Tour was hosted by Fox and Hound in Dallas, Texas. The staff and owners treated the players well with great service and an amazing atmosphere, and we very much appreciate each and every one of them! We were able to extend the field to 81 players for this fifth stop of the 2016 season with guaranteed $1,500-added. Cam Salim from Germany (but visiting the States) made his way to the hot seat match with wins over Bradley Fleming 7-0, Mike Nagaki 7-4, Andy Kiesling 8-3, Tony Loper 8-2, Shane Minihan 8-4 and Robert Clark 8-6. Tony Sulsar was also on a tear and defeated Donnie Gregory 8-6, Tony Matthew 8-5, Trent Stith 8-3, Joey Barnes 8-7, and Paul Guernsey 8-5 to meet up with Cam in the hot seat. That match was a thriller and went hill-hill with Cam coming out on top. Tony then made his way past youngster Nick Evans 8-5 to get a rematch with Cam in the finals. Congrats to Nick for a great 3rd place showing! The fans were not disappointed watching the finals! The first set was a great match that went hill-hill with Tony forcing a second set. In the next set of this true double elimination finals, Cam got on the hill first in this race to 8. Tony got to 6 and needed one more game for another hill-hill match. During this game, Tony fouled, but only he saw it. He gave up ball-in-hand and Cam ran out for the win. Very admirable for Tony to give up the foul only he saw, as he knew that could lead to the loss of the tournament. Congrats to Tony for his ethics and 2nd place finish, and to Cam for his 1st place win. 4th place was filled by Anthony Shea, 5th/6th places were filled by Paul Guernsey and Robert Clark, and 7th/8th places were filled by CJ Wiley and Jordan Gartenberg.

MIDWEST BILLIARDS & CUE EXPO ROARING SUCCESS!!! Big Dog Billiards in Des Moines, IA hosted their annual extravaganza and, as usual, it was a huge success. In addition to the Cue Expo, there were four events ñ the One Pocket Championship, the Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge, Open 9-Ball and a Banks Ring Game. For one pocket aficionados, the star-studded lineup couldn’t get much better. A very tough field of fourteen arrived and ready to rumble. After losing his first match 5-0 to Josh Roberts - last year’s runner-up & 2014 champ - Alex Pagulyan tore up the west side of the chart. After eliminating last year’s champ, Scott Frost, he proceeded to eject Jesse Bowman, Corey Deuel, Shane Van Boening, Jeremy Jones and Francisco Bustamante to reach the final.

Special thanks to Jeremy Jones and Scott Frost for their commentary during the pro tournaments! We hope all of the viewers at home enjoyed the show! Eric Gardner, graphics designer, is the best in the business! He designed all the many magnificent versions of the flyers, posters, banners, business cards and teaser graphics for the Midwest Billiards and Cue Expo! If you ever need graphics produced, Eric Gardner is man for the job! Thank you Eric, for a job well done! We have already begun the planning process for next year’s 2017 Midwest Billiards & Cue Expo, which will be even bigger and better than this year’s stellar event. We hope to see everyone here again next year! Thanks again everyone! James Landrum, Randy Hanson, and Jon Brown, Big Dog Billiards
While Alex was fighting to stay alive, Dennis Orcollo arrived at the final match unscathed after defeating Scott Frost, Josh Roberts, Shane Van Boening & Francisco Bustamante. Since this event was true double elimination, he would have to be beaten twice. Dennis won the lag and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the final race to 5. It looked like it might be the end of the road for Alex. He had been battling back problems throughout the entire event but he hadn’t come all the way through the loser’s bracket to go down like this… Roaring back, the Lion dug deep and staged a comeback. Fans were treated to some top notch one pocket as both displayed the skills that had propelled them through the stellar field. When the smoke cleared, Alex prevailed 5-3 - forcing a second set. Apparently, neither one wanted to take even a short break as they immediately lagged for the break. This time, however, it was all Alex taking Dennis down with a 5-0 win for the title. Saturday night was for the bank fans. A field of eight competed in the Banks Ring Game. After several hours, Sky Woodward and Jeremy Jones were the last two standing. Sky was almost down to the felt when he came back to win. Fourteen players competed in the single elimination Bigfoot event on the ten-foot Diamond. Again, Alex and Dennis emerged in the final four as each was to play a couple of newcomers. It looked like it might be a rematch of the one pocket final! Dennis defeated Sharik Sayed to advance to the finals but Alex was forced to withdraw from the event citing back problems. His opponent, Cam Salim, advanced to the finals. Playing perfectly, Cam jumped out to an early lead. An uncharacteristic miss let Dennis back in the match and soon it was a horse race. Dennis pulled ahead at the end of the match and on the hill at 10-8, he hung the combination on the final 10-ball! Cam leapt out of his seat and pocketed the carom. However, a Cinderella story was not to be as Dennis closed out the match at 11-9. There were 197 players in the bar table event. Robb Saez emerged undefeated and faced Sharik Sayed in the finals. Sharik won the first set forcing a second but this time, Robb prevailed. Congratulations to Alex, Dennis, Sky & Robb for becoming the 2016 Big Dog champions! Many thanks to Jim Landrum and Randy Hanson, owners of Big Dog Billiards, for hosting such a great event. It wouldn’t have been possible without the sponsors - Pat Diveney of Diveney Cues, Evan Clarke of Segen Cues, Dave Jacoby of Jacoby Cues, Ivan Lee of Iwan Simonis/Aramith, Greg Sullivan of Diamond Billiard Products, C. L. Bailey, Big D’s Cafe, PoolPlayerMatchups.com, Johnny Miller, Viking Cues, McDermott Cues, Neutec Lighting, Kamui’s John Bertone, Rawhide and GoPlayPool.com. Thanks to all - it couldn’t have been done without you!!! Thanks also to all the viewers for tuning in! We will see you next month for the Duel in The Desert with Efren Reyes vs Scott Frost - July 11-14th at the Del Sol Casino in Tucson, AZ.

Champs to BEF Nationals ILLINOIS
Success at Inaugural Illinois Junior State 10-Ball Championships Story by David Carr. Photos Courtesy of Roger Garnsey
On April 2-3, 44 youth billiard student-athletes representing Illinois, Missouri and Iowa made their appearance at Starship Billiards in Decatur, IL for a fun-filled weekend of pool at the first ever Illinois Junior State 10-Ball Championships. In the 14 and Under Girls, Sarah Tate finished in 1st place and received a paid entry to the Nationals, a trophy and a new cue. Christian Kogel won a paid entry and a 2nd place trophy. The 18 and Under Girls division saw Serena Black go undefeated all day to beat Katelin Ballou in a spirited finals match. Katlin Schilling, who had two “nail-biter” hill/hill matches against the eventual 1st and 2nd place winners, finished 3rd and Megan Thomas was 4th. Both Serena and Katlin Schilling had previously earned paid entries, so a paid entry went to Katelin Ballou and Megan Thomas also received the paid entry to the Nationals. In the 14 and Under Boys, Koty Lovell finished a very strong day’s performance with a win over Keith McKuin to secure a paid entry to the Nationals, a 1st place trophy and new cue. By virtue of Keith McKuin’s prior qualification, the paid entry was awarded to 3rd place finisher, Joey Tate. In a most fitting scene to end the evening, the 18 and Under Boys division went to a double hill conclusion that saw Timmy Bly outlast Brandon Grimes. Timmy certainly earned his paid entry, 1st place trophy and new cue as did Brandon for his 2nd place trophy and paid National entry in what was arguably the most exciting match of a long tournament day.

Special thanks are due to the 2 primary sponsors, Starship Billiards and Kim Jones, Central Illinois APA Leagues as well as a large number of folks who volunteered their time and experience. Among them were Jerry Brown who served as Tournament Director, Tom Fankhauser, a nationally qualified referee who was the Chief Referee, Leslie and Mike Adams, Terry Beer, Heather Hunter, Bill Pickerill, also a super pool enthusiast locally who has been instrumental in all things billiard, especially those youth-related ones, a number of junior players and others. A special thanks also to Roger Garnsey, who shared freely of his time and advice throughout the event. Iwan Simonis & Aramith Continue Support for Atlantic Challenge Cup
Organizers of the Atlantic Challenge Cup today announced Iwan Simonis and Aramith (Saluc) will extend their support of the Atlantic Challenge Cup in 2016 by continuing to be the official cloth and ball of the event, taking place July 8-11, 2016 in Schaumburg, Illinois (just outside Chicago). Simonis 860® and Aramith® Tournament™ TV Pro-Cup Pool Ball Sets will be used during the event. “Simonis and Aramith have a long history of supporting play at every level of skill and in all parts of the world,” said Billiard Congress of America Chief Executive Officer Rob Johnson. “As supporters of this initiative from day one, Simonis and Aramith have allowed this event to move from a concept to the staging our second event - this time on the North American continent.” “We were on board from the inception of this forward-thinking initiative,” said Iwan Simonis and Aramith North American President Ivan Lee. “This platform allows for juniors to compete at the highest level of play on an international stage. It has become an opportunity for the entire industry to come together to cooperate on an event that encourages and rewards junior players for their dedication and commitment to excellence. Viewers of this event, either live or on the live internet stream, will witness top quality play and tremendous professionalism. I want to recognize all the efforts by the players, coaches, event supporters and organizers in making the Atlantic Challenge Cup a reality.” Now in its second year, the Atlantic Challenge Cup features the best youth players from Europe and America in a Mosconi Cup style event. Six players on each team, four boys and two girls, battle it out on an annual basis to see who has bragging rights across the Atlantic. The event is the result of a joint venture between the Billiard Congress of America and the European Pocket Billiard Federation. A new website solely dedicated to the Atlantic Challenge Cup will be launched in the near future.

Don’t Wait Too Long!
With four months to go, you would think that you have plenty of time to make arrangements for this year’s U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. Well, don’t think that way! Last year, the tournament field was filled at 128 with a long waiting list. Last year, the choice seating was sold out. Last year, on some days, the hotel room reservations were completely booked. Does that tell you anything? This year’s event, in honor of the late Barry Behrman, may be the best U.S. Open ever. Barry gave the reins to Pat Fleming of Accu-Stats and his job will be to live up to Barry Behrman’s dream. Last year, 128 players competed, many from around the world. Because of a long waiting list, the field has been increased to 160 players. The $75,000 in added money qualifies it as a “Tier 2” event sanctioned by the WPA. Over $200,000 in prize money is at stake with $50,000 going to the winner while paying down to 48th place which will pay $2,000. From October 16-22, 2016, The Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel will be bending over backwards to accommodate us. They loved the U.S. Open and want us back for years to come. This wonderful host site is offering us extremely low room rates, especially for being in the heart of Norfolk. The hotel staff, as well as the City of Norfolk, will do everything they can to make you feel welcome. For tickets to the annual BCA Hall of Fame Banquet at the Sheraton, call Mike Panozzo at 312-341-1110 ext 2004. Go to www.usopen9ballchampionships.com for key information with regards to player registration, VIP seating, and hotel reservations. If you have any concerns or questions, you only have to contact one person: Pat Fleming 973-838-7089 patscue@yahoo.com
Master Cue Maker, Mr. Paul Huebler (Huebler Cues), passed away shortly after 1p yesterday in Linn, Missouri. Paul’s passing comes just a few days after our Annual World Championships and just a week before our Annual Int’l Junior Championships. Paul was such a huge part of these two events for many years and was adored and admired by every VNEA player who was lucky enough to make his acquaintance. Paul was 89 years old. Services were June 13th at 10a held at the St. George Catholic Church at 613 MainStreet in Linn, Missouri 65061. No known Memorials have been established. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Terry Bajorek at 501.454.9283. E-mail: poolcrazy61@yahoo.com.
