Alex Calderone Claims Inaugural Topwater Memorial One Pocket Event Alex Calderone certainly had his work cut out for him at the first annual one pocket event to commemorate the life and times of fallen pool player, Jerald “Topwater” Jackson, held at Bogies Billiards in Houston, Texas, July 1st-3rd, 2016. From the one loss side, Calderone came back to battle Jeremy Jones in the final, securing both sets, 3-1, 3-2. Trickshot Champion Mike Massey, Scotland’s Scott Proud, Manny Chau, and Sylver Ochoa, among others, competed in the event, which boasted a $7,000 prize fund, and three days of action-packed live streaming.

From start to finish, the intense one pocket action had event-goers on the edge of their seats. In a race to 3, where virtually anything is possible, players tightened up their games which made for long sets and high anxiety. Seasoned players like Jeremy Jones are all too familiar with this kind of pressure, and took it in stride. Jones began his quest with wins over Sylver Ochoa, 3-1, and Robert Clark, 3-0, while Alex Calderone overcame James Davis, Jr., Ernesto Bayaua, 3-0, and Manny Chau, 3-1. Houston’s own Chase Rudder made an impressive trek, with wins over Gerardo Perez, 3-1, Adam Cooper, 3-0, and Fort Worth’s Clint Mayo, 3-2, while Scott Proud bested Phil Martin, David Richardson, 3-0, and Ray Lopez, 3-1. On the one loss side, coming off a recent Lone Star Billiards Tour win, Jeff Chauncey eliminated Dennis Perry, 3-0, Dallas’ Roman Bayda, 3-2, and Manny Chau, 3-1. Austin’s James Davis, Jr. eliminated Cooper, 3-2, Dustin Taylor, 3-1, but fell to Robert Clark. Ernesto Bayaua was upset by Ray Lopez, 3-1, while Ochoa took down Scott McKenzie, Mike Massey, 3-0, and Clint Mayo, 3-0. Back on the east side, Calderone commanded a 2-0 lead over Jones, but following a couple of unforced errors, Jones came back to win the set, 3-2. Rudder and Proud fought equally hard, going double hill, but it was Rudder who pulled ahead to win, 3-2. Jones defeated Rudder for the hot seat, 3-1. On the west side, Clark ended Chauncey’s run, 3-2, while Lopez upset Ochoa, 3-2. In turn, Clark was eliminated by Proud, 3-0, and Lopez was ousted by Calderone, 3-1. Calderone went on to defeat Proud, 3-1, and Rudder, 3-0, earning himself a rematch with Jones in the final.

Alex Calderone Photo by Bobby Garcia Photography

In the first set, Calderone came on strong, handing Jones his first loss of the tournament, 3-1. In the second set, both players fought for every safety, and every shot. Tied at 2-2, a missed seven ball caused Jones to lose control of the table, costing him the game, and the set. Congratulations to Alex Calderone who made an incredible come back to win this inaugural event! Jeremy and Priscilla Jackson, along with many friends, attended the memorial event in honor of their father, who was a big part Houston’s pool community for more than 30 years. Jackson was well known for his big gamble, never-say-die attitude, and his insatiable thirst for action. One pocket was his favorite game. Jackson’s heart gave out on October 30th, 2014. He was 53. Credits for this event include David and Shannon Richardson, owners of Bogies Billiards who graciously added $2,000 to the prize fund, OnSitePool.com (live streaming), Bobby Garcia Photography, David Kurjan (onepocket.org), Walter Kelly Cue Repair, and Mike Massey who performed a few trick shots for the crowd. VAN BOENING Claims 2nd US 10-Ball Championship TITLE Shane Van Boening of South Dakota did what he did best Thursday at the US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino — break with consistency; pocket balls with deadly accuracy; and place the cue ball with precision. And so Van Boening was able to pocket a second US Open 10-Ball Championship, and the $10,000 prize that accompanied a silver cup.

first US Open 10-Ball Championship in 2011, also has four US Open 9-Ball Championship titles; a US Open One Pocket title and a US Open 8-Ball Championship title, which he hopes to replicate this weekend. The US Open 8-Ball Championship starts Saturday at 10 a.m. “I’ll always support (Mark Griffin’s) events and play in them,” Van Boening said. “He’s done so much for me.”

The 52-player field started play Wednesday, July 23 and wrapped up Friday, July 25 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino Pavilion. The tournament is played with Cyclop balls on 7-foot Diamond tables covered with Simonis Cloth. The US Open 10-Ball format is race to ten, double elimination and the US Open 8-Ball format is race to eight, double elimination.

Van Boening’s tournament started strong, with wins over Chad Sholders, 10-4; Tommy Tokoph, 10-7; Georgi Georgiev, 10-5; Amar Kang, 10-6, and Sky Woodward, 10-5, before being bested by runner-up Rodney Morris in the hot seat match, 10-7. Morris forced Van Boening to the loser’s side of the bracket where he beat Canadian John Morra 10-6, to ensure himself a spot in the finals and another shot at Morris.

The 2016 US Open 8-Ball & 10-Ball Championships are being held in conjunction with the 40th BCAPL National Championships, July 20-30 at The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The event features more than 5,000 amateur players representing 47 states, nine Canadian provinces and 11 countries, competing in approximately 40 divisions, on 300 Diamond pool tables. The annual tournament also includes about 50 exhibitors. The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino is the official host venue. Other sponsors include Viking, Kamui, Omega Billiards, Cyclop, Diamond, Simonis, and Predator.

Morris’ path to the hot seat included wins over Mitch Ellerman, Brandon Shuff, Vilmos Foldes, Jason Klatt and Morra.

Several challenge matches are also scheduled, including the Pick Your Poison Challenge, which has Hohmann facing Van Boening, in a race to 21, 8-ball; the Tiger Challenge, where legend Francisco Bustamante will take on Rodney ‘The Rocket’ Morris in a race to 21 in 10-ball; and the OB Challenge, which features Justin Bergman of Fairview Heights, Il. against Corey Deuel of San Leandro, Calif.

The finals match remained close until the score was tied at eight games each, when Van Boening broke and ran the rack to move ahead in the single race-to-13 final match. Van Boening capitalized when Morris made mistakes and played solidly to capture every game until he pocketed the final 10 ball and the championship title.

The final standings and payouts in the tournament were: 1. Shane Van Boening, 2. Rodney Morris, 3. John Morra, 4. Sky Woodward, 5/6 Oscar Dominguez, Rodrigo Geronimo, 7/8 John Schmidt, Amar Kang, 9/12 Jason Klatt, Taylor Anderson, Jesse Bowman, and Billy Thorpe,

This 2016 US Open 8-Ball Championships became a Dakotas Duel Monday when Shane Van Boening, ‘The South Dakota Kid’ met Rory Hendrickson, of Fargo, N.D., in the finals of the prestigious tournament. The men have known each other for years, and the mutual respect was apparent as the match got underway with a handshake and smiles before the lag. Then things got serious on the table as Van Boening and Hendrickson, the house professional at Fargo Billiards, went to work. Van Boening is undisputedly one of the best players in the U.S. and, therefore, expected to grind through a tough field to make it to the finals of a tournament. But after losing in the first round, 7-9, to Taylor Anderson, Van Boening had to take the long road to the finals. He posted wins over: Steve Register, 9-2; Kyle Pepin, 9-1; Greg Harada Jr., 9-4; Chris McDaniel, 9-5; Shane McMinn, 9-5; Thorsten Hohmann, 9-6; Francisco Bustamante, 9-8; Amar Kang, 9-8; Josh Roberts, 9-6; and Jesse Bowman, 9-4. Hendrickson, on the other hand, was a long shot to make it into the final’s arena of the 63-player field. In his path through the right side of the bracket, Hendrickson, beat: Kelli Chuberko, 9-4; Hunter

As we become better players, our habits deepen. We rely on those habits to help us do the same sequences of little things throughout our pre-shot and shooting routines, time after time. Once our physical habits are solidly in place, we can put our focus on strategy and winning. Well, maybe for a while…

Pros in every sport continuously return to their fundamentals. Many of our troubles seem to arise from the gradual decay of our fundamentals. Whatever our old habits were, they tend to return. We often make little adjustments to our form, our equipment, or our routines, and we forget to consider how each change relates to the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish. Further, we don’t always remember to notice whether the changes we made are actually helping. This came home to me recently when I made an equipment change and failed to notice the effects. I changed my contact lenses, optimizing them a bit more for distance, since I was hitting golf balls further than I could see (unfortunately, not because I’m a great golfer). Five or six weeks went by, and my pool game was way off. I hadn’t had a slump this long in many years. Then one day, I was hitting a pool shot and realized I was not seeing the balls clearly. I had been seeing them poorly ever since I changed the contacts, but I just hadn’t consciously noticed. I went back and got contacts optimized for pool distances, and immediately got my game back.

have to make an effort. For example, to determine how close to straight-in a shot is, we have to put our body on the line through the balls, move our head side to side a little to get a 3D perspective, and perhaps bend down to get closer to the table surface. It takes more than a glance. If we get lazy and line up without making the necessary and appropriate effort, we may have time to consider the error of our ways while we’re in the chair hoping to get back to the table. Think about when you’re in the zone, playing your best. How are you seeing? What are you seeing? I’ll bet you’re using your eyes quite well, making the effort, bothering to focus, clearly and consciously seeing what you’re seeing. The difference is that when you’re in the zone, it doesn’t seem like effort. You’re totally focused and you simply do the right things. You’re fully in the moment, seeing, feeling, doing. On the other hand, I’m wagering that most of the time, most of us are not even fully focusing our eyes when we’re down on a shot. As we get older, it can take a couple of seconds to fully focus on the cueball and a couple more seconds to then bring the object ball into full focus. Even worse, I believe a good percentage of players “black out” during their hit stroke. They aren’t focused on the vital physical aspects of their game. Instead, they’re focused internally, on distractions such as fear of missing, self-consciousness, trying to look good, and so on.

The moral of the story is that we really do have to check ourselves out, especially when we’re in a slump. Something has changed somewhere, and change is not automatically for the better. In my case, and I suspect, for many of us, we’re often not seeing what we’re looking at. We’re running on habit and not bothering to really focus hard on what we’re doing.

What are you actually seeing during the hit moment? What are you aware of? Take some shots and see what you’re seeing. To be focused enough to consciously see during the hit, you have to be focused before the hit. And that’s what we’re really after.

Let’s talk about how we use our vision in pool. We rely on our eyesight to judge distances, spatial relationships, gaps, angles, and alignments. For most of these tasks, we

Getting out of whack might be a gradual process, but recovering from it doesn’t have to be. Put forth more effort. Focus. Give yourself a better chance. Lazy loses.

OVER AND UNDER

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

The “Over and Under” shot is pretty dated and you all may think it is a mere “crowdpleaser”. The truth of the matter is that the principle this shot is based on is extremely useful in all cue games as it may help you score a point or find position. It comes up with certain frequency especially playing rotation games such as 9- and 10-Ball, 3-cushion billiards and, of course, it becomes of vital importance to be able to execute it for artistic pool and billiards players. This is the most popular version which we dress up by laying a bridge across the table at the first diamonds from the short rail, as shown in the diagram. We can also use a regular cue and place a couple of chalk cubes under its ferrule. The bridge’s head leaning on the right long rail offers enough clearance for a ball to pass under it. Place your Object Ball (in this case the Yellow Ball) with its front edge even with the cue/ bridge and about two balls away from the long rail. Then place your CB at about one-ball distance from the short rail so that the line of centers between the OB and the CB (the blue dotted line) aims slightly to the right of the right tip of pocket A. Place the second OB (the Red Ball) hanging by pocket B. While you aim the Yellow Ball to make it into pocket A, elevate your cue by 20⁰-25⁰. I use an elevated close bridge meaning that the palm of my bridge hand is off the rail which I touch only with my middle, ring and pinkie fingers while my thumb and index finger loop around the shaft. Hit the CB with a 2-tip, 6 o’clock and speed-3 stroke. Don’t hold back or poke the CB. Just follow through knowing that the tip of your cue will slide on the cloth without damaging it due to the moderate elevation of the cue. The CB will take off slightly but enough to be propped up by the Yellow Ball which will become its “ramp ball”. While the yellow OB travels towards pocket A, the CB jumps over the hurdle, lands several inches past it and then the back spin grabs and drives the CB backwards, under the bridge to make the red OB A into pocket B. The principle this shot teaches is the “delayed draw”. When we learn how to make the CB jump slightly after hitting an OB by using bottom English on it, we can drive it forward up to 10-12 inches before it actually puts in the rear gear likely curving around a ball which might be in the way for scoring a point or for finding good position for the next shot. To be absolutely sure not to damage the cloth while practicing this shot, consider my patented “CLOTH SHIELDS” advertised in this fine magazine.

Side Pocket Specials

Bob Jewett

Bob Jewett

Recently there was a challenge match between Darren Appleton and Earl Strickland at 10 ball. The corner pockets on the special table were extra-tough at 4 1/4 inches but the side pockets were super-tough. There were no side pockets; it was a four-pocket table. Evidently that made the table a little too tough. In the 104 games of the match there was only one break-and-run, which was posted by Appleton.

off the 8 and into pocket X. Instead you end up at E. With a double-bank of the 7 to pocket Y you try to leave a straight-in on the 8 ball to the corner Z and a safe if you miss. You make the 7 but leave just a little too much angle on the 8 to avoid the scratch. Your final trick is to shoot very softly at the 8 and roll the cue ball against the facing of pocket X to get the safety and the corner hook.

I like side pockets and not just because they make it easier for me to run a few balls. There are lots of little tricks they make possible and if you know what to do in the tricky situations you have an advantage. Here is a rack of nine ball that uses several of them.

Do you know some other interesting little techniques like these? Send them to my email (jewett@sfbiliards.com) and we’ll share them with the other readers.

Unfortunately, you mis-aim and don’t hit the 3 at all, leaving the cue ball at B. Fortunately there is a bank shot available -- the 3 can be made on a one-rail bank to pocket X. The shot looks like a sure double kiss, but a trick gets you out of the kiss. If you hit the 3 halffull on the right side it drives into the cushion right by the side pocket opening. There it encounters the stiff facing of the pocket which is a thin layer of hard rubber that takes the punishment when a ball hits the pockethard. That facing can straighten the bank out and it amazingly goes straight in the other side. This “impossible” bank works only for a small range of positions of the 3 ball, so you are going to have to experiment with that. On some tables the cue ball may need to be a little closer to the center of the table to avoid the kiss -- that depends on how hard the facing is and how soft the cushion rubber. Try it and see. You get the 3 bank and the 4 in and you leave the cue ball at C. The 5 ball is frozen to the corner of the pocket just far enough away from the pocket that it looks impossible. It’s actually easy. Just ignore the corner and shoot straight at the ball from C and draw straight back for the 6 ball. The corner compresses some and lets the ball pass for a hard stroke. From the 6 you hope to leave the cue ball at D to play the 7 on another kiss shot

14

August 2016

Your opponent has broken dry and leaves an impossible-looking runout. The first problem is the 3 ball by the side pocket. It’s edge is just slightly sticking into the pocket opening and it’s frozen to the cushion. The first technique to try is to move it with the 2 ball. You play the 1 and leave the cue ball at A which is just about perfect to play the 2 off the 3 and into the side. You have to hit the 3 thin enough you don’t get a double kiss but thick enough to move it into a makeable position.

UNWANTED VARIABLES Pool is a complex game to master because the technical aspects of the game are not simple to execute subconsciously. However, the more you can reduce the variables, the simpler the game of pool becomes, and the easier it is to play the game with a positive attitude. In fact, most beginners try to figure out things on their own. Some are too proud to seek help and it’s that kind of spirit that often leaves them playing pool at the same “speed” for many years. There are some things players can control and some things they cannot. This month let’s examine the variables we can control.

Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

STRATEGY is the art of playing a game within your limitations. Generally speaking, pool players are limited by both their physical and technical abilities. During a game, you have to be realistic about your playing ability. You should know what you can and can’t do. Everyone has a unique set of talents and being able to manage those talents is an important part of the game. However, sometimes our ego gets in the way. It’s that little voice that tells you that you can play like Earl Strickland even though you really can’t. You know—the same voice that tells us that we would look really cool cutting the nine ball backward into the corner pocket rather than playing a simple safe. Great players know that if they try to run out before the time is right, the game usually ends

www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews

in disaster. Be realistic with what you can actually do and as Dirty Harry would say, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” HEALTH is also very important and this aspect requires us to exercise regularly. It also requires us to eat healthy foods and follow a strict diet. Being in good physical condition is an important part of performing well. It helps us to remain positive and gives us that extra edge we need to repeat a quality pool stroke over and over again, especially near the end of the tournament when most players are getting physically tired. Today, the best players in the world are “athletes.” They understand the importance of being in shape. It wasn’t that way fifteen years ago, but today you generally have two options: get in shape or suffer the consequences. MENTAL GAME is another variable that we can control. It is a known fact that having a positive attitude affects the chemistry in our brain and allows us to think and perform on a higher level. In order for us to do that, players should consider “reprogramming” their mind so it can better optimize their physical abilities. Three ways to reprogram your mind include the use of hypnosis, positive affirmations, and subliminal messaging. HYPNOSIS is the use of hypnotherapy by a licensed potential. It is a form of mental training for the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy can enhance your performance on the pool table by transforming negative thoughts into positive ones. Hypnotic suggestion often has a positive effect on the way players think and perform during high-level competition. Positive affirmations work to reprogram our route guidance system, which significantly affects our performance on the pool table. The idea here is that your brain is going to talk to you, so you might as well train it to talk to you in a positive way. You can practice positive self-talk by making up a list of things you want to believe about yourself (see the appendix for an example). Once the list is made, you can train yourself by repeating (out loud) each of the statements on a daily basis. Pool is a mentally draining game that can change your attitude from one ball to the next. How you react will ultimately affect your performance. In the words of Thomas Paine, “The real man smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection.” Yes, pool is an emotional roller coaster, but a positive attitude will allow you to remain optimistic even in the face of adversity.

First Timers Capture

Big day yesterday watching Taylor and Tristan Hansen (Mankato, MN) play doubles together for the very first time - and in the top-rated adult division at the BCAPL National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. There were 12 pairs competing for the title. The Hansen’s took the long way while the Lea’s took the direct route going undefeated into the final. Taylor and Tristan had a 1st round bye, then lost their 1st match to send them to the loser’s side. They dug deep and worked together to win their next 5 matches to get back to the championship where they met Bob and Betty Lea (Conyers, GA). Taylor and Tristan then won the 1st match of the championship final 5-1 and the second match 4-3 to pull off the double-dip to win the $1600 prize and become the 2016 BCAPL Platinum Scotch Doubles Champions! Way to challenge yourselves, stay positive, and always remember we are very proud of you both! After the awards ceremony this morning, Taylor and Tristan were asked to play Pro Alex Pagulayan in an exhibition match race to 3 on the pay-per-view stream. What a fun and great experience, with lots of laughs shared by all! The kids ended up winning 3-2. . .with help from Alex’s decision to try the 3 rail kick that he missed, allowing the kids to run out for the win. Thank you Alex for the opportunity and meaningful compliments you expressed to both of them.

Taylor Hansen Rolls on at Women’s NCPT Stop (IL), Vanessa Hood (IL), Paula Goulden (KS), Shiela Belcher (KS), Amy Latzko (IL), M. Renee Young (KS), Priya Nataraj (WI), and Connie O’Heron (WI). North Central Pool Tour is a Women’s Division II regional tour (Wisconsin, Iowa, Norther Illinois) sanctioned through North American Pool Tour (NAPT). NCPT is in its first year as a regional tour and with the help of many sponsors, supporters and players, has already experienced much success.

The Women’s North Central Pool Tour (NCPT) Stop #4, NAPT qualifier 9-Ball on the 9ft. Diamonds tournament concluded early Sunday morning, July 10, at Big Dog Billiards. We thank Patrick Diveney of Diveney Custom Cues for his fantastic contribution to this Women’s Tournament, and John P. Fields and Evan Clarke for their support of the NCPT and NAPT! Special thanks to Kelly Birmingham Nickl and her husband Tim for running a great pool tournament and promoting and supporting women’s billiards through the North Central Pool Tour! Congratulations to Taylor Hansen on a strong finish vs Jacqui Schroeder to capture the title of Champion! Taylor played straight through the tournament on the winner’s side, demonstrating her resolve to become a great pool champion! At 17 years of age, Taylor is a remarkable young woman with awesome skill and top-notch talent! Top two finishers also earned an invitation and PAID ENTRY ($275 each) to the upcoming North American Pool Tour’s Stop #2 to be held on August 18-21st at Shooters Bar & Billiards, Grayslake, IL compliments of Evan Clarke of SEGEN CUES, Delafield, WI. Both Finishing in second place, Jacqui Schroeder (IL) secured - for the second time - a valuable qualifier spot. She won NCPT’s qualifier last April and represented the NCPT in NAPT’s first stop June 2-5 at Sky Billiards, Herndon, VA. We wish them the best of the best of luck in the NAPT tournament! Third prize was earned by NCPT first-timer, Julia Gabriel (IL) who was only beat by the top two finishers.

Connie O’Heron (WI) was very pleased with her hard-earned fourth place finish. A long-time player from Wisconsin, O’Heron has been a champion in one way or another for more than 40 years, but has understandably struggled since her stage four ovarian cancer diagnosis several years ago. In spite of her illness and many hard days, pool gives her happiness and strength as she plays somewhere almost every weekend. O’Heron is also a regular player on the Midwest Ladies Pool Tour, another regional tour sanctioned through NAPT. She played hard and never let on how tired she was, keeping a wide smile all day. Connie is a true inspiration to all of us and we are incredibly proud and happy for her success. More than half the field (9) on Saturday were brand new players to the North Central Pool Tour, some from as far away as Wichita, KS. We congratulate all seventeen women from five Midwestern States who participated in this $2000 added tournament sponsored by Big Dog Billiards and Patrick Diveney of Diveney Custom Cues. Participants included Kelly Birmingham Nickl (WI), Jen Rolling (IA), Taylor Hansen (MN), Beth Fondell (MN), Faith Eichmann (IA), Laura Semko (IL), Paula Sparks (IA), Laura Bendikas (IL), Julia Gabriel (IL), Jacqui Schroeder

Kelly Birmingham Nickl, NCPT Director, says, “The NCPT has created quite a buzz in this region. We are incredibly proud of the ladies on this tour. They play with tremendous heart and utmost respect. It’s a tough field, but we have seen that anyone can win on any day. I’m honored to help bring attention and opportunity to these hard-working, deserving women. We couldn’t run this tour without the wonderful support from sponsors and supporters such as Evan Clarke of Segen Cues, Pat Diveney of Diveney Cues, Bill Barnes of Shooter’s Bar & Billiards, Grayslake, IL, James Landrum and Randy Hanson of Big Dog Billiards, Des Moines, IA, and Tom Lubus of Tom’s Foolery, West Allis, WI. They have all donated merchandise and/or funds to give these ladies the opportunities they have worked so hard for and we are sincerely grateful for their support.” The next two scheduled stops for NCPT are August 27, 2016 at Deep Pockets Billiards, Moline, IL and September 17, 2016 at the brand new, The Rock Sports Bar, Sun Prairie, WI. Crispian Ng Nabs Omega Billiard’s 6th Tour Stop at Pucketts

On the weekend of July 9-10, the Omega Billiards Tour was hosted by Pucketts in Fort Worth, Texas. The staff and owners treated the players well with great service and an amazing atmosphere. The tables were re-felted in preparation and the players really appreciated the care. We were able to extend the field to 83 players for this sixth stop of the 2016 season with guaranteed $1,500-added!

Cues, and BCAPL/CSI. We would also like to give a big thanks to our additional sponsors, Irving Ink and Thread, AZBilliards.com, Pool School, and BilliardsPress.com. Norman Small started out with a bye and then defeated Anthony Schaeffer 7-4, David Franklin 7-0, Paul Sifuentes 7-5, Omar Bengochea 7-6, and Mike Voelkering hill-hill to earn a spot to play for the hot seat. Crispian Ng was also on a tear and defeated Eric Hsu 7-6, Clint Mayo 7-1, Mike Rountree 7-5, Roman Bayda 7-4, Chris Smith 7-4, and Alberto Nieto 7-3 before meeting up with Norman. Norman and Crispian were fighting hard in that match for the hot seat and, when tied at 4-4, Crispian pulled away and won 7-4 for a guaranteed spot in the finals.

Tournament Director Melinda Bailey would like to thank Pucketts owners and staff for their awesome hospitality all weekend! She would also like to thank her fabulous team: Heather Farr and Ginger Abadilla. A big thank you also goes out to Michael Hoang, main sponsor of the Tour and owner of Omega Billiards Supply in Hurst, TX. After Chris (Woody) Smith lost to Crispian earlier, he then went on to defeat Jake Hulsey 7-1, CJ Wiley 7-3, Mike Voelkering 7-4, and Alberto Nieto 7-2. Woody then met up with Norman Small in the semi-finals and it was a great hill-hill thriller! Norman would come out on top and find himself in the finals! Woody would finish his highest finish to date (3rd) and played great all weekend!

The next stop will be held August 6-7 at Wizards in Richardson, Texas. $1,500 added and already full with 100 players. We have ten stops total in 2016. Pool is alive and thriving in Texas! Check out the website for more details: omegabilliardstour.com/

The finals were another great match for the fans and it would be yet another hill-hill nail biter! It was Crispian’s break and he made a ball on the break and then ran out the hill-hill case game and captured his first Omega title for 2016! Big congrats to Crispian going undefeated! Norman would have his highest finish yet with 2nd place and we’ll see him soon back in the finals. Congrats to both Norman and Woody for their fantastic finishes! 4th place was filled by Alberto Nieto, 5th/6th places were filled by Roman Bayda and Mike Voelkering, and 7th/8th places were filled by CJ Wiley and Omar Bengochea. Congrats to ALL the players and fans and sponsors for another great event! A HUGE thank you goes out to our sponsors Omega Billiards Supply, OB

28th Annual BEF Junior Nationals

A Year of Records, Repeats and Remembrance Photos Courtesy of JP Parmentier & Billiard Education Foundation, Story by Earl Munson

July 20, 2016 (Denver, CO): On July 13th - 16th, 2016 the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) proudly held its 28th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships with its largest field of juniors in history. The record breaking event was held at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center just outside of the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. For the third year in a row top junior from each state made their yearly journey to this year’s most prestigious of all U.S. junior tournaments in which the venue was hosted alongside the 2016 Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Billiard & Home Leisure Expo. This year’s field boasted 193 players from 39 qualifying events in 28 different states. The four participating divisions included 18 & Under Boys (18UB), 18 & Under Girls (18UG), 14 & Under Boys (14UB) and 14 & Under Girls (14UG). This event is the only opportunity for U.S. billiard student-athletes to qualify to compete at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships, as well as for Team USA at the annual Atlantic Challenge Cup (ACC). This year’s junior nationals kicked off with its highly anticipated annual AdultYouth Scotch Doubles tournament directed by Mel and Tammy Jo Leonard the night before on Tuesday, July 12th. This year drew a record-breaking 93 teams participating. This doubles event gives the parents and adults the chance to

of preliminary double elimination brackets qualifying to a seeded single elimination finals bracket. The four divisions 18UB, 14UB, 18UG, and 14UG played on 128, 64, 32 and 32 double elimination brackets respectively. From these brackets the top 25% qualified from each division to single elimination brackets in which the winners were seeded and the one-loss side was blind drawn. Changes were also made to shorter races which were reviewed and determined by

Tournament Director Earl Munson, “After our evaluations, longer races may be expected at next year’s 2017 BEF Junior Nationals based on table availability and participating player fields.” Another change to this year’s Junior Nationals was the banquet night which was held on the third night of the tournament, Friday July 15th instead of the traditional first night. This welcomed improvement was a big hit as the banquet hall was a buzz of excitement as players, family members, pros, sponsors, and BEF staff and volunteers were in attendance for a great meal, remembrance, awards and honors. A tearful audience gave remembrance by a watching a presentation of a touching collection of pictures of fellow BEF junior player, the late Brendan Crockett, playing in past BEF Junior Nationals and WPA World Junior events. Executive Director, Samm Diep-Vidal read a letter from the Crockett family, Mark Wilson of Lindenwood University, Brendan’s former coach, and 2002 BCA Junior National Champion Beau Runningen, a close friend of the Crockett’s, both gave tearful speeches remembering the skilled billiard prodigy and honored him by awarding the newly renamed Brendan Crockett Character Awards. Special Guest Speaker at the banquet this year was “The Scorpion” Johnny Archer. He took a moment to share his life story and powerful message of perseverance. As always Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman made his 23rd appearance at the junior nationals gave out his Artistic Pool awards to this year’s champions. (Results announced separately and posted on BEF website.) The banquet night rounded off with an astounding record of BEF Academic All-

American (AAA) Awards presented. Of the 193 player field, an incredible 42% of this year’s participants (that’s 81 players!) earned school GPA’s of 3.5 or better to receive this award! The sport of billiards is definitely attracting, creating, and maintaining academic excellence! Of those 81 student-athletes, 20 of them had a perfect 4.0 GPA. (Complete list of recipients announced separately and posted on BEF website.) The banquet concluded with Door Prize winners being announced, including these two lucky grand prize recipients: Bryan Rodriguez, Edinburg, TX winner of a J. Pechauer Custom Cue & Case and Sandra E. Meece, Seneca, SC winner of a 9’ Diamond ProAm pool table. Without a doubt match play all week was exciting and intense as all players vied to make it to their respective finals single-elimination brackets. The finals play for all divisions was held on Saturday July 16th. In an effort to stay more aligned with the WPA World events and the Olympics, the BEF awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze

from Bloomington, MN was knocked over to the one loss side of the preliminary bracket by fellow ACC Team USA teammate Emily Herpel from Freehold, NY. Larson nick-named “The Grinder” for a reason had fellow 2016 ACC Team USA members Serena Black from Warrensburg, IL & Sierra Reams from Richmond, VA on the one loss side standing in her way in which she respectively knocked out of the tournament. In the first match on the finals board Kaylee McIntosh, a very skilled player from Tampa Bay Florida, almost ended Larson’s bid to repeat her title taking her hillhill before narrowly losing the final game moving Larson on to eventually match up with her 2015 ACC Team USA teammate Taylor Hansen from Mankato, MN in a match-up that ended with a convincing score of 5-2 and Larson moving on to eventually face fellow 2015 Worlds Team USA member Michelle Jiang in the finals. In the on-the-edge of your seat hill-hill match for the Gold Medal, Larson won 7-6 as she once again retained her 18UG girl’s title as the best in the U.S. with now five consecutive BEF Junior Nationals titles. In the 14UG division it was just as intense, as the 2015 14UG Champion Ashley Fullerton from Lake Park, MN showed she too has what it takes to be a repeat champion when she dug deep after being down in a few matches to take it all the way to her 2nd BEF title in a row. Fullerton went all the way to the winners seeded finalist bracket where she ground down Tiana Jiang from Harvard, MA in the first round to advance her to the second round.

In the second round, Fullerton kept amazingly calm even when she was down in the match 4-1 against up and comer Amanda Campbell from Arvada, CO. Fullerton eventually took Campbell to hill-hill where she 2016 BEF Gold Medal Winners managed the win 5-4 moving her to the finals with the very quiet but TOP FINISHERS FROM ALL DIVISIONS: skilled Vivian Liu from Harvard, MA. 18U Boys Gold Ricky Evans, 15, St. Peters, MO 14U Gold Nathan Childress, 13 N. Chesterfield, VA The back and forth score of Fullerton Boys Silver Nathan Diederich, 17, Victorville, CA Boys Silver Mahkeal Parris, 14, Kingshill, VI and Liu put the audience, especially Bronze Travis Southard, 17, Reidsville, NC Bronze Kaiden Hunkins, 14, Waukesha, WI the parents, on pins and needles as the Evan Swett, 16, Wichita, KS Joey Tate, 11, Lake Villa, IL score once again wound up hill-hill with Ashley Fullerton once again 18U Gold April Larson, 16, Bloomington, MN 14U Gold Ashley Fullerton, 13, Lake Park, MN having the nerves to put her over Girls Silver Michelle Jiang, 16, Harvard, MA Girls Silver Vivian Liu, 13, Harvard, MA the top for the Gold Medal and her Bronze Hailey Fullerton, 16, Lake Park, MN Bronze Amanda Campbell, 12, Arvada, CO second consecutive 14UG title. Vivian Taylor Hansen, 17, Mankato, MN Aryana Lynch, 13, Allen, TX Liu took Silver, with both her and Fullerton qualifying for China out of the 14UG division. Amanda Campbell medals to the top four finishers of each division, in lieu of the past trophies. All and Aryana Lynch from Allen, TX both played very well with both taking the medalists in the 18UB, 18UG and 14UB divisions qualified for the 2016 WPA 14UG Bronze Medals home. World Junior 9-Ball Championships November 16-20 in Shanghai, China, along with the gold and silver medalists from the 14UG division. Title of 18UB champ was up for grabs as reigning champ Chris Robinson aged out. In 2014, Ricky Evans, from St. Peters, MO took home the 14UB championship All BEF Junior National participants also qualify to be selected as potential title while his older brother took the 18UB title in the same year. Ricky has since nominees for the Atlantic Challenge Cup Team USA at the 2017 event being held in looked to do what his brother has done and win the 18UB division as well. Having Europe next year. The future is very bright for our BEF junior program members as moved up to the 18UB division after turning 15 this year he finally got his chance there are now more than ever before, so many high level competitive opportunities to prove himself. He firmly set his sights on winning the 18UB division this year at the state, national, and international level. and accomplished his goal. With the 18UG races shortened this year, it was very tense as the 2015 defending champion and 2015/2016 ACC Team USA member April “The Grinder” Larson

MIDWEST 9-BALL TOUR OPEN 9-BALL to Shooter’s in Olathe, KS. They met first in a winners’ side semifinal, as Kathleen Morast and Karen Lincoln met in the other one. Lovely sent Frideres to the loss side 7-2, and in the hot seat match, faced Morast, who’d defeated Lincoln 7-5. Lovely claimed the hot seat 7-4 over Lincoln and waited on Frideres. On the loss side, Frideres picked up Amy Boulware, who’d defeated Monica Dibben, double hill, to reach her. Morast drew Rhea Brooks, who’d gotten by Alisha Ropes 7-4. Frideres shut out Boulware, and in the quarterfinals, faced Morast, who’d eliminated Ropes, double hill. Frideres took the quarterfinal match over Morast 7-3, and then eliminated Lincoln 7-4 in the semifinals. With a bit of momentum on her side, Frideres took the opening set of the true double elimination final 7-2. Lovely came back to take the second set 7-5 and claim the event title.

(l to r)Robb Saez, Doug Patrick (sponsor), J Michael Durbin (sponsor), Jason Klatt Robb Saez chalked up his first (recorded) major win in two years with an undefeated run on the Midwest Open 9-Ball Tour’s Open event on the weekend of July 8-10. Though far from inactive over the last two years, cashing in 23 events, Saez’ last two major event victories were in the 2014 Texas Tornado Open and in the Music City Classic’s Open Division. The $3,300-added Midwest 9-Ball Tour event, run concurrently with a One Pocket and Ladies event (separate stories), drew 118 entrants to Shooter’s in Olathe, KS. The event drew 118 players including a prestigious list of not only the Midwest’s most recognizable competitors, but strong players from around the country. Among those who didn’t make the final 12 cut were Bergman, Chip, and John Gabriel. Among those who did were Saez, Sky Woodward, Klatt, Shane, Dustin Gunia, Tommy Tokoph, Joey Gray, Sergio Rivas and ‘young gun’ Taylor Anderson. Saez advanced to a winners’ side semifinal versus Rivas, while Woodward took on Klatt. Saez sent Rivas to the west bracket 9-6, while Woodward downed Klatt 9-3. Saez claimed the hot seat in a double hill battle over Woodward, and waited on what turned out to be Klatt’s return. Over on the loss side, Rivas picked up Gunia, who’d survived two straight double hill matches against Devin and Anderson to reach him. Klatt drew Shane McMinn, who’d eliminated Lloyd Moreland 9-5 and Tokoph 9-6. Klatt and McMinn locked up in a double hill fight that eventually sent Klatt to the quarterfinals. He was joined by Gunia, who’d defeated Rivas 9-5. Klatt took the quarterfinal match 9-4 over Gunia to earn himself a re-match versus Woodward in the semifinals. Woodward put up a double hill fight against him, but Klatt prevailed to face Saez in the finals. Saez claimed the event title with a 9-5 victory over Klatt in those finals. Liz Lovely rallied from an opening set defeat at the hands of Jessica Frideres in the finals of the Midwest 9-Ball Tour’s $700-added Ladies event, held on the weekend of July 8-10, to win the second set and claim the ladies’ title. The event, held in conjunction with a One Pocket and Open event (separate stories) drew 24 entrants 1. 2. 3. 4. 5/6. 7/8. 9-12.

BEF Junior Nationals

continued from p23

Even when Evans was down in one of his matches he would simply not show it. He fought his way through winning all his matches putting him in the winners seeded side of the 18UB finals single elimination bracket. In the first round Evans defeated Brandon VanOverbeke from Marshall, MN 7-4 sliding him eastward on the bracket to face Jorden Burden from Jacksonville, FL in which Evans once again closed the match 7-4. In the third round Evans kept Travis Southard from Reidsville, NC from moving closer to the finals and handed Southard a Bronze Medal for his efforts. Evan Swett from Wichita, KS also earned the Bronze Medal for his performance having been defeated by Nathan Diederich. Ricky Evans is no stranger to playing in a high pressure match and he quickly dispatched Nathan Diederich from Victorville, CA with a crushing loss 9-0 but still earning Diederich a very respectable Silver Medal for his fine over-all tournament performance. Ricky Evans has earned his first Gold Medal since moving up only this year to the 18UB bracket earning his second BEF Junior National Title in both the 14UB & now the 18UB. Ricky Evans, Nathan Diederich, Evan Swett, and Travis Southard will qualify for the WPA World Junior event held in China this November. Rounding out the divisions with the 14UB’s it would be another player defending his title in the name of Nathan Childress from North Chesterfield, VA. Childress showed his skills and determination by making the final 16 cut in the 14UB by winning all his matches in the preliminary bracket seeding him on the winner final bracket to face the 7 -time BEF Junior National contender Eric Roberts from Crossville, TN. Roberts took Childress hill-hill with Childress edging out a close win 5-4 to move him onward to the 2nd round to face Bryan Rodriguez from Edinburg, TX. Rodriguez tried to slow Childress down but came up short losing 5-2. In the 3rd round Childress rolled past Kaiden Hunkins from Waukesha, WI 5-1 earning Hunkins the Bronze Medal, not too shabby for competing with a broken arm. Joey Tate from Lake Villa, IL also claimed a Bronze Medal after he was defeated 5-2 in the 3rd round by Mahkeal Parris from Kingshill, Virgin Islands. Parris and Childress faced off in the finals with Childress having the psychological edge having been there the prior year and it was evident as Childress defeated Parris 7-4 earning him back-to-back BEF Junior National titles in the 14UB division. Parris proudly took the Silver Medal back home to the Virgin Islands with his fine overall performance. All four 14UB competitors have qualified for Junior Worlds in China including: Nathan Childress and Kaiden Hunkins being their second visit to China, Mahkeal Parris and Joey Tate with their first.

Frost back to idolizing him to the fullest. I hope and pray he returns to our country to play for many more years to come in front of all of you.

The legacy and legend of Efren (Bata) Reyes... “Will live on forever” “First off it was his choice to play me, and I am conscious of the fact that he is NOT in his prime”.

This last match for 50k...

This man has done more for pool in this world and has handled himself incredibly. For the last 20yrs I’ve had the opportunity to drive him crazy chasing him at every tournament basically like a little kid tugging on his dad’s shirt to go to the park. Not one time did the man ever turn me down to play so I always felt maybe he noticed something inside me. Every time we played I wanted to impress him and if I didn’t see him for 5/6 months I couldn’t wait to get my chance to show him how much I had learned. Around 12 years ago I had the chance to play him a race to 7 One pocket getting 8/7 for 3 or 5k can’t remember but the guy that was putting part of the money up about had a heart attack when I said “I don’t want 8/7”! I want to play even! So I told my guy I don’t care if u bet or not but I’m betting all I got and I don’t want a spot! He decided to give me the money and we played the set. Low and behold I played out of my mind and beat him 7-3 that day. The best has ALWAYS come out in me playing this special man 6 other times for bigger money and amazingly I won ALL SIX times!

I hope that people understand this man is still in the top echelon of players and before we played this epic set many many people said, “Efren just won the accu-stats event and has been playing un-godly in LA so I feel Frost will lose”... That’s ok and I completely get that everyone has a pure right to their own opinion. But when I just beat him plz don’t say “well he’s just too old”. Give me the credit of executing my game plan and keeping him locked down for hours and tightening his stroke up intentionally. That’s all I ask... As for Efren, he’s ALL our hero and I hope to only walk a few steps in his shoes one day. And to Efren, if your reading this, I love you from the bottom of my heart and you’ve made me who I am today.

What Efren has done for his country is simply nothing short of amazing. He has built many many homes for people that needed them and donated thousands and thousands of dollars to his countrymen. He has helped many sick people and so much more... I really don’t need to go into all his titles as you can just look them up. As for me and my opinion, when this game loses Efren, the game will have lost a part of me as well. He is and ALWAYS will be my hero and when we are in battle, we want to chop each other down but when that’s over I go
