World Pool Masters and International 10-Ball Championships Set to Rock the Riviera
The BCA Pool League is proud to announce the return of two of the most prestigious professional events to the Riviera Hotel and Casino May 2009. The 17th Party Poker.net World Pool Masters and the 9th Annual Predator 10-Ball Championship will be in the Royale Pavilion once again along side the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships. The World Pool Masters, one of the most revered invitational events with a limited field of 16 players is produced by Matchroom Sport and will take center stage first at the Royale Pavilion May 8-10. A large supplier of sports programming worldwide, Matchroom Sport also produces other well regarded events such as the Mosconi Cup and the World Cup of Pool in addition to Darts, Fishing, Pokes, Snooker, Boxing, Tenpin and Bowls. Equally exciting, the Predator 10-Ball Championship produced by Dragon Promotions will move into the pavilion May 11-16. The tournament boasts a roster of the top pool talent from across the globe. Last year’s winner Tony Drago of Malta, considered one of the fastest players in the world, will have an opportunity to defend his 2008 title. Once again he will have to face players such as Shane Van Boening, Mika Immonen, Johnny Archer, Francisco Bustamante, John Schmidt, Efren Reyes and the 2008 World Pool Masters winner Alex Pagulayan just to name a few of the illustrious names who will be in attendance. The Minnesota Operators of Music and Amusement (MOMA) held it’s 29th Annual 8 Ball Championships in Duluth, MN., Feb. 12th - 15th, 2009. The longest running State tournament boost some of the best players Internationally and the best Sportsmanship you will find in this great sport of pool. With nearly 700 Singles and over 255 teams participating the worst of the problems were hangovers. The Mens Master Team Division title match was typical of many matches going to the 25th game of the second set to determine the winner. Congratulations to the Whatever Dude team (picture and names below) for a well played matches against Ty Wilson, Josh Burbal, Brian Brekke, Johnny Meyer and Mario Parayno on the Two Stooges “Metro” team. The Ladies Masters Team Division was filled with so many talented International players also. Logistically Challenged (picture and names below) held the hot seat and took out the well known Midwest Masters team of Jolene Herum, Christine Glass, Deb Johnson and Marissa Herum. Jolene and Christine took their talent from the pool tables to the floor in a game of Hop-Scotch, these girls are good!! With so many Masters players ... Billiard Etiquette 101

During a lesson, a new pool player asked me how she can be considerate at the pool table to her opponents. She did not want to commit any acts that were considered improper. It occurred to me to write an article on proper pool etiquette. I believe it is important to the image and growth of pool that all players do their best to be polite to opponents and exhibit good manners as role models to new and young players taking up the game. General guidelines: 1. Greet your opponent and introduce yourself if you don’t already know her. I always wish her luck, but “Play well,” is a fine substitute for the superstitious. After the match, win or lose, shake hands and thank her for the match. Try to remember that the way you handle winning or losing might be the way some other player will behave toward you some day. Handle both with grace and dignity and you’ll earn a reputation as a respectful player who also deserves to be treated with dignity. 2. Be very quiet while your opponent is lined up on a shot preparing to pull the trigger on a shot. Crack open your can of soda while she is walking around the table or chalking her cue. Likewise, don’t shout across the room to say hello to a friend when your opponent is shooting. 3. If you are not shooting, it is best to have a seat in a chair. The establishment should have sufficient seating for you and your opponent to each have a chair and table where you can rest your cue and set your cue case, drink and cell phone (which should be on silent or very low ring depending on the situation). It is customary in serious matches to walk to your seat as soon as you miss or play a safety. You’ve completed your turn and should clear the area to allow your opponent to the table. Don’t grab the chalk. You won’t need it until your next turn and your opponent will likely use it. 4. If you must stand, be still and discrete. In casual or fast paced games where you’ll shoot very frequently it is acceptable to remain standing near the table, but not in the direct line of sight of your opponent’s shot. For example, if you are in a safety battle in one pocket where you and your opponent are trading shots rapidly, it may be pointless to return to your seat after every shot, especially if your pocket is on the other side of the table. In this case, it is fine to stay standing on that side of the table, but please make an effort to take a couple of steps back and try to blend into the background. 5. If you are standing or seated and the player must shoot toward you, remain as still as you can. Make no sudden movements and don’t visit with a nearby observer. If your location is somewhat close to the pool table and you see that your opponent will probably shoot looking directly toward you, move 6 or 8 feet away before she bends down to address the cue ball. Do this only if you have time to move aside before she starts to bend down to shoot. If you are too late, just try to hold extremely still. 6. Spectators: If you have to walk by a pool table, try to time your trip between shots. If the layout of the pool room is such that you have no choice but to walk by several tables, do it quickly, smoothly, and quietly. There are mixed feelings about this, but I’d rather see a person just walk by in one motion than stutter-step through a bunch of pool tables. These days, most players are used to a certain amount of background noise and motion. It can be more distracting to see a person come to an abrupt halt in your peripheral vision while shooting than to have them keep walking smoothly past the end of the pool table. I understand that people are trying to be respectful by stopping, but if I am bothered by their walking by, I’ll simply take a couple of more warm up strokes until they pass by, or stand up, re-chalk and resume shooting. This movement applies only to spectators, never to my opponents. They should either be seated or standing motionless outside my line of sight. 7. In a tournament setting, be on time for your match and keep an ear (continued on page 12)

On Sunday, January 11th, twelve feet of history was disassembled and taken out of Rack ‘Em Billiards in Aurora, Colorado. The 100+ year old 12-foot snooker table was a staple in the back corner of the pool room for 15 years. It was the only 12-foot snooker table around and on occasion would find itself occupied with a classic game of golf. Sadly, the desire for snooker or golf has dwindled. On the day they were removing the table, Larry S. said, “I brought my friend all the way here just to show him this table and to play on it, but now it’s too late.” Unfortunately for Larry, they were already breaking it down. If you’ve ever been to Samm Diep Rack ‘Em, I’m sure you can recall memories of seeing or playing on the colossal table. I was originally
told that the table was built in 1891. While researching this story, I was later informed that it was from the 1870’s. That was when the American billiard games as we know them today were officially played on a table with six pockets. Rack ‘Em Billiard’s original owner, Rich, acquired the table when he opened the place in 1983. This 5-piece state table even came with extra long pool cues and bridges. In its place, we can now find two 9-foot Diamond tables. One of which is a nearly new Diamond Pro-Am. This is the same table that’s used at the US Open, Derby City Classic, and most other professional events. This table will also be used as the feature and finals table for all upcoming big table tournaments at Rack ‘Em. (continued on page 10)

from: CueSports International Atwell Sets Record at 16th Annual US Bar Table Championships The 16th Annual U.S Bar Table Championships at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada was seven days of astounding display of dominance by two players. The tournament draws an international field of players to compete in a trifecta of events: 8, 9 and 10-Ball. It is one of the most difficult and strenuous 7’ table tournaments in the world. Winning one of the three events is a tremendous accomplishment. However winning two out of three and being in the finals of all three is a record and one not likely to be seen again anytime soon. Glen Atwell from Vancouver, Washington accomplished that feat. Hot out of the gate Monday was Darren Appleton from the U.K winning the 10Ball event. Appleton, considered the favorite as the current reigning WPA World 10-Ball Champion, did not disappoint. Atwell came from the one loss bracket to face Appleton in the finals. However Appleton was in dead stroke winning 7-1. Day three ushered in the 9-Ball event. With 111 players in the field what would be the chances of the same two players being in the finals? Well as it turned out 100%. Atwell and Appleton made it seem like a two man show. Not negating the talents of the remainder of the field which included heavy hitters such as Mark Tadd, Mitch Ellerman, Shane Van Boening, Jose Parica and the previous year’s All Around winner Johnathan Pinegar. Would Appleton again nearly shut out Atwell and take the first two events of the week or would Atwell avenge the previous loss? Coming again from the one loss side Atwell, in the 9-Ball finals against Appleton declared by his performance a big N to the No, double dipping Appleton 9-6 / 9-6. So now going into day five a whole separate issue came into play, who would take home the All Around title, Atwell or Appleton. The last of the three games of the week was the 8-Ball event with over
140+ players in attendance. Players who had consistently played well the other two events but always seemed to come behind Atwell and Appleton were gunning to get their place in the sun. Well again Sunday seemed to be about A & A. However, out of the fray someone who had played consistently well all week was Stevie Moore. Moore, currently ranked 15th in the U.S, became the man to beat Sunday. He was the only person to break through the Atwell and Appleton wall. For the first time in seven days a new player was king of the hot seat. But in a case of déjà-vu, Atwell once again found himself in the finals coming from the one loss side. In the true double elimination, Atwell needed to win two sets to Moore’s one. This was a close match as Atwell took set one (5-4), but Moore fought back winning the second set and the 8-Ball event (5-4). The All Around finishers well deserved their bonuses with Atwell taking 1st ($2000 bonus), Appleton taking 2nd ($1000 bonus) and Moore taking 3rd ($500 bonus). Congratulations to all three winners for their outstanding performances. Some notable players who participated were Mike Davis who has played in several world championships, has been a member of the U.S Mosconi Cup Team and is the 2009 Reno Open winner; Professional player “Mad Max” Eberle; young pool phenoms such as multiple Junior National Champion Austin Murphy, 2009 Jay Swanson Memorial winner Mitch Ellerman, Brandon Shuff who is a dominant force in the Mid-Atlantic region and New Mexico heavy hitter Nick Tafoya. The tournament was also well represented by a more mature contingency of top players such as Bobby Hunter, Sal Butera and 4th Place finisher Walter Glass to name a few. After a grueling first two days, the top six players returned Sunday morning: Redgie Cutler, John Doherty, Walter Glass, Austin Murphy, Jui Lung Chen and Brandon Shuff. By the third round at 4 pm, the field was whittled down to Austin Murphy, Jui Lung Chen and Brandon Shuff. Each player has an impressive resume and all are considered a force in their respective parts of the country and well known for their skills and determination. Chen has been rolling over players in Texas for years on the Fast Eddies Tour. Shuff is multi- faceted and is as adept at One-Pocket and 9-Ball as he is in 8-Ball. He has long been considered one of the players to beat on the Tiger Tour and in 2008 won the Maryland State One-Pocket Championship. Long, lanky and well over 6’2”, Austin Murphy and the word ‘prodigy’ have been used together. Murphy cashed in his first Reno Open in 2004 and at age 11 was the youngest player to win the 14 and under division of the Junior National Championship. In 2007 he placed 9th in the World Summit of Pool. Quite a list of accomplishments for any player; even more so when you consider that Murphy will turn 16 years old July 2009. 14.1 National Championship CueSports International announces Comet Billiards of Parsippany, New Jersey will be the host location of the NCS 14.1 Continuous National Championship July 31 – August 2, 2009. Comet Billiards is a choice location for this event as the ownership has long supported the art of straight pool (14.1) and is the home of the Accu-Stats Arena. Feature matches and the finals of the 3 day NCS 14.1 event will be streamed live by the Accu-Stats team led by Hall of Fame recipient Pat Fleming. The field size at the event will be based on demand but not to exceed 64. In addition to cash and prizes the top two finishers of the national event at Comet will receive paid entry to the World 14.1 Championship August 25-30 at the Hilton in East Brunswick, New Jersey. To participate at the NCS 14.1 Continuous National Championship players must win a spot at qualifier tournaments scheduled around the country. Matches held on the feature Diamond Pro-Am table were streamed all day during the recent NCS qualifier. Viewers at home can go to: Ustream.tv and search “RACK EM BILLIARDS” to see the streaming or watch the pre-recorded matches. Sean Meade, owner of Rack ‘Em, plans to continue promoting pool with more big tournaments, leagues, and occasional pool clinics. “We’re very proud to be the first pool room in Colorado to offer live streaming. We plan to keep the camera up to stream future tournaments and matches. We look forward to holding more big competitions here soon,” said Sean. The $500 added event showcased a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes. On this day, Curtis Motley (Crowder, OK) vanquished the field, including an A-side bracket finals win over Sandy Chamberlain (Broken Arrow, OK) 7-4. The finals went only one set, as undefeated Curtis Motley turned back Tim Ramsay 7-5 for the title! By virtue of Sandy Chamberlain being the highest-finishing ACS member, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2009 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. out for your name when the tournament director announces matches. Tournaments can be difficult to keep on schedule if players don’t arrive at the table soon after their match is called. Likewise, when the match is completed, tell the tournament director the results promptly so he can call the next match on your table. 8. Respect the game, opponent, and equipment. Tempers flare but maintain your composure. Don’t thwack the table with your cue or dump the balls out of the ball tray when you get a table. The equipment has enough wear and tear through the course of regular play. Help it stay in good shape by refraining from unnecessary harsh use. Place cubes of chalk with the blue side up. Chalk dust spills off the cube when it is set on the rail upside down or lying on its side. This chalk ends up in the cloth, on players’ clothes and hands and eventually embedded in their shafts. Chalk dust can reduce the life of the cloth and contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the tables, balls, and cue sticks. Chalk your cue tip while holding it over the floor, not over the playing surface. This will keep the fallout from getting into the cloth. While warming up on a table, never shoot object balls with your cue tip. The chalk grinds into the object balls and may cause the cue ball to throw off a well struck shot with the phenomenon of ‘skid.’ Keep the equipment clean and it will reward you with consistent and predictable play.

Referee Class at ACS Nationals A national referee training class will be conducted at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, May 31-June 2, 2009 – during the 2009 National Championships being produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS). Interested parties must have passed an open-book, ACS Referee test prior to attending the class. Class hours are flexible, with entrants taking either a 4-hour class in the mornings or a 4-hour class in the afternoons on each day. Class registration fee is $75, payable onsite. Successful completion of the course by the individual will result in accreditation at “ACS National Referee” level. For information on taking the test prior to the class and reserving your spot for the class, please contact ACS Referee Program Administrator, Janet Ybarra, at (972) 345-9762 or jybarra@ americancuesports.org. Hugh Brown, professional referee and qualified world qualified snooker coach from the United Kingdom will be conducting a snooker referee training seminar during the ACS 2009 Nationals. Mr. Brown was one of the international referees on hand in 2006 to officiate the USA’s first-ever international snooker event – the IBSF World Snooker Team Championships - in San Jose, California, and is a speaker of some renown at various social functions in the sport. Charge for the seminar is $75, with applicants given some flexibility to both train under Mr. Brown and play in the ACS Nationals if they so desire. Successful completion of the course will gain certification through the United States Snooker Association. Mr. Brown will also offer snooker rulebooks and ball markers for sale. Deadlines for entry into the ACS National Championships include April 20, 2009 with a late fee of $25 to accompany any entries mailed thereafter until May 4, 2009.
