HOW TO PICK A WINE YOU’LL LOVE?

BWS Insider: Jordy Davy Insider Pick: Indigo Organic Grape Growers Collective Nero d’Avola 750ml Review: Indigo Growers Nero d’Avola has the cherry sweetness of a Grenache and the jammy goodness of a Shiraz. It’s mediumbodied with soft tannins and goes well with a beef (or a mushroom) burger. It’s veganfriendly, organic and Australian made. A beautiful wine! @bws_jordy

The key to picking a wine is knowing what you like. It took me many glasses of different wines to find out exactly what I like. Don’t shy away from Google and reading up on wine reviews and tasting notes. Understanding what flavours are in the wine will help you in the future. I’ve introduced a friend to her first red wine, and it was a Grenache (she loved it). I’ve brought home Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon for her to try and she didn’t like any of them. We’ve found that we have similar taste and prefer soft tannins, medium acidity and sweet juicy red fruits. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even experiment with wine and food - pairing foods with similar flavours to your wine can elevate your experience.

WHAT IS THE BEST ‘COUCH’ WINE TO HAVE ON A LAZY NIGHT IN?

WHAT WINES ARE BEST SERVED AT A LARGE GATHERING?

While there’s nothing wrong with a bottle of Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, next time why not try something a little unexpected - a Tempranillo from Spain. It’s a delightful, juicy red which is sure to please red wine drinkers.

A smooth Merlot pairs perfectly with your stay at home movie night. WHAT IS THE BEST WINE TO PICK FOR A RED WINE SAUCE?

Variety is the spice of life. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Montepulciano and Grenache would all be a hit at your next gathering.

A FRIEND TURNS UP TO A BARBECUE WITH A BOTTLE OF WINE. WHAT DO YOU HOPE IT TO BE?

Definitely a big, bold Barossa Shiraz. It pairs perfectly with barbecued beef. WHAT IS THE BEST ‘FAIL-SAFE’ WINE TO GIFT?

Not enough people talk about pairing Malbec with cheese. Malbec and blue cheese is a match made in heaven.

A Sangiovese for sure. Its medium body and moderate tannins make it the perfect partner.

Ricky shares with us his tips on great food wines, gift ideas and the perfect wine when you have a lazy evening on the couch.

A BOTTLE OF MALBEC IS ON THE TABLE, WHAT ARE YOU PAIRING IT WITH?

An Argentinian speciality that actually originated in France! Malbec is what made me fall in love with red wine. Malbec is a fullbodied wine with medium acidity and tannins. You’re stuck on an island with only 1 wine. What is it? McLaren Vale Old Vine Grenache. What would your last meal be and what wine would you match it with? What a question. A hangman’s dinner and a bottle of 1963 Penfolds Grange.

Demands for new styles that are fresh, vibrant and flavoursome has seen wines from lesser known regions come into popularity. Wines from warm climates such as Nero d’Avola from Sicily, Montepulciano from Abruzzo and Primitivo are rich in flavour and go well with hearty meat dishes.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo of course! The perfect burger and pizza wine. I’m cooking a mushroom risotto for a group of friends. What wine do I serve it with?

WHAT’S DRINKINGANDREWWHEN...

WINES YOU SHOULD TRY NOW 14

Grenache is also an excellent choice to expand your repertoire, try a Grenache from McLaren Vale or the Barossa Valley, or if you’re after a “gluggable” affordable wine try a Garnacha from Campo de Borja in Northern Spain. Have you ever fretted over what wine to bring to dinner? Well, next time it's your turn to bring the wine, bring a bottle of a juicy-flavoured Gamay from Beaujolais or the South of France. Gamay is versatile with a variety of dishes and great for value.

I’m eating braised lamb shanks in a rich red winesauce. What wine should I have with it? A juicy full-flavoured Sicillian Nero d’Avola or Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. A juicy beef burger is on the menu for lunch. What’s in your wine glass?

A light to medium bodied red wine style is ideal – try Gamay or Pinot Noir from south of France. Sangiovese (Chinati Riserva) and Tempranillo (Rioja Reserva) are also good options!
