Grounded elegance T

he first element of the RACT’s major investment in tourism on Tasmania’s east coast is officially open. The Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge are designed to immerse guests in an elegant yet grounded, natural experience. The final product adds a new premium option for visitors to the region. The use of curved glass, Tasmanian timbers and tactile finishes adds to the immersive experience, while outdoor baths on the deck and separate lounge spaces, both taking in the view, make the most of their unique location.

The pavilions were designed by talented Tasmanians Liminal Architecture, who took the vision of developer Brett Torossi and brought it to fruition. The team worked closely with masterful local builders Cordwell Lane to make these stunning spaces a reality. The works of local artists, commissioned especially for this project and inspired by the nature of the peninsula, are featured on the walls (see feature page 50-51). Locally made furnishings have also been purpose-built to reflect the surrounding natural elements.

MOVING FORWARD

With the State Election campaign run and won, we asked re-elected Premier Will Hodgman to answer some questions around the future of mobility in our state. During the State Election campaign, the Liberal Party made a large number of election commitments around upgrades to road infrastructure. How many of these do you see being implemented during the next term of government? What are your short-term priorities? Our policies recognise the need to plan Tasmania’s transport future in the short, medium and longer terms, and we expect work to begin on most of our road commitments during the next term of Government.

Keeping prices down and taking decisive action to address cost of living pressures will continue to be a key priority of a re-elected majority Hodgman Liberal Government. Over the last term MAIB premiums reduced by 7.5 per cent, and were then frozen for 12 months. Our commitment to invest in infrastructure will also help with insurance costs and reduced wear and tear on vehicles while reducing the human and financial costs associated with accidents.

Our booming economy has resulted in growing pains and it is clear we need to invest in our road infrastructure to ensure the state can keep up with demand.

We have also doubled the number of days special interest plated vehicles can be driven on the road to 104, and we will remove the cost of motor tax from all special interest registered vehicles – meaning an average minimum saving of around $64.50 per registration.

Tackling congestion in Hobart and Launceston is critical to maintaining the Tasmanian way of life, and to improving business productivity, and we are looking forward to getting on with the job and delivering the infrastructure Tasmania needs and deserves.

RACT believes that we should be preparing for the impacts of emerging mobility options such as electric and autonomous vehicles. What role will your Government play in preparing for the future of mobility in Tasmania?

A recent study by the national auto club body shows that Hobart and Launceston are among the most expensive cities in the country in terms of impact of transport costs on the household budget. What strategies will your government implement to assist in making transport costs more affordable for Tasmanians?

We will keep Tasmania fully engaged with the exciting prospect of emerging technology through our work with all State and Territory regulators plus the Commonwealth. The best thing governments can do at the moment is to help define and clear the current legal barriers to autonomous vehicles so that technology adoption is not delayed by red tape.

The Hodgman Liberal Government, along with its Road Safety Advisory Council in the Towards Zero Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026, will continue to focus on a range of road safety strategies to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Tasmanian roads to zero – the only appropriate target. Each of our road investment policies is designed to deliver safer roads. We will also be recruiting an additional 125 police over the next term and this means there can be an even greater police presence on our roads. We will continue investing in safety upgrades such as the 10-year Midland Highway project, where wider lanes, improved road alignment, and flexible center barriers create a significant improvement in the safety rating of the roads. We will also continue to engage with the community to make sure driver education is world-class.

We also believe more could be done to assist visiting drivers to navigate our roads more safely, including improved signage in multiple languages and other highly visible on-road cues. What are the government’s plans to improve this infrastructure? Last year we launched a campaign specifically targeting visitors, with a dedicated website plus providing information and materials at our airports. This has information tailored to international visitors, and also for motorcyclists, given that Tasmania is an incredibly popular touring destination for mainland riders, and motorcyclists are over-represented in our road trauma statistics.

In addition, we have identified specific funding to upgrade roads around popular tourism businesses and we are also making funding available to telecommunication providers to dramatically improve mobile phone coverage on the Great Eastern Drive – as we know many visitors rely upon passengers using mobile devices to map out their routes and to track their location.

A recent review of the National Road Safety Strategy revealed that 90% of the strategy’s targets ‘would not be met’. This included reducing road deaths and serious injuries in Tasmania. What strategies will the government implement to ensure this strategy gets back on track in Tasmania?

Our visitor road policy consists of $72 million for key tourist roads and routes covering all parts of the state, but with a focus on high visitation sites such as access to the Three Capes experience, Bruny Island, Hastings Cave Road, the Tasman Highway, the Tarkine, the road to Launceston Airport, plus key gateway accesses for major centres.

As part of our Climate Change Action Plan the Government is investing $250,000 to establish an electric vehicle working group and begin the strategic rollout of electric vehicle charging stations. It is important that we are engaging with local government, business and industry, and that the rollout of electric vehicle charging stations is both coordinated and well-supported.

For the first time in Tasmania’s history we have committed a policy specifically to address the issue of tourist roads. We must invest in tourist routes, but we get the double benefit of improved roads for local communities and local businesses.

t has not been a great start to our year in terms of safety on our roads. Sadly, this is a consistent trend Australia-wide. There does not appear to be any improvement over time in road statistics and this causes me to reflect on why this is so. The RACT advocates and participates in many national and international road safety campaigns and forums that aim to deliver tangible outcomes for the communities we serve. There are many road safety awareness campaigns globally that have significant relevance on a local scale. For example, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation sponsors the international Child Health Initiative (childhealthinitiative.org) which states that every child has the right to a safe environment – yet every day thousands of children are tragically killed or maimed by road traffic, often on the way to or from school. This campaign quite rightly says that ‘This must change’. The FIA #3500lives campaign (fia.com/3500lives) is another high-profile effort to reduce road fatalities around the world. The campaign uses well-known celebrities and sportspeople to help deliver their message. The number in the campaign name is derived from the fact that, every day, 3500 people are killed on roads worldwide. Young people in particular are over-represented, as the FIA notes that road crashes are the number one cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 years. 8

What is particularly concerning is that despite these campaigns, and those of the RACT and our road safety counterparts locally, the road safety statistics remain the same. Looking at Tasmanian statistics from the Department of State Growth for the past 10 years, January 2008 saw five fatal and 26 serious road crashes; January 2018 recorded six fatal and 24 serious road crashes. In the intervening years, aside from a horror month on our roads in January 2009, these figures have hovered around similar levels. In 2017 in Tasmania, there were 36 fatalities and 270 serious injuries. The table right highlights there has been little change in these annual figures in the past 10 years. What is even more concerning is that 2018’s figures are not improving. According to the Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC) there have been eight fatalities on our roads to 12 March 2018, compared to four for the same period last year; and 52 serious injuries to 7 March 2018, compared to 55 for the same period in 2017. The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) recently released analysis of the National Road Safety Strategy, which was signed by state and federal governments in 2011 in an attempt to reduce death and injuries on Australian roads by 30 per cent before 2020. The AAA analysis revealed that 90% of the strategy’s targets ‘would not be met’. The report also said that December 2017 was the deadliest month on Australia’s roads since the initiative was signed, and that more work needed to be done in a number of states, including Tasmania. The cost of road trauma on Australian roads is estimated to be $30 billion each year. So what can we do about these horrifying results? On a local level, RACT will participate in Road Safety Week in May. See the detailed list of activities on page 15 for how you can get involved. But it will take more than just a week to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads. The State Government’s Towards Zero – Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 (transport.tas.gov.au/ roadsafety/towards_zero) has a longterm vision of zero deaths or serious injuries on our roads. The aim is to have less than 200 by 2026. On current figures that means we aim to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads by more than 100 in eight years. Given the past 10 years, that is a bold aim. In the short term, the Towards Zero Action Plan 2017-2019 targets Tasmania’s highest risk areas and deliberately focuses on those road safety initiatives WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE

that will gain the greatest reductions in serious injuries and deaths. The State Government will also continue to undertake a broader range of road safety initiatives for vulnerable road users such as tourists, cyclists and pedestrians. Education tools that target driver behaviours and road safety awareness are critical to reducing the injuries and deaths on our roads. RACT RoadSafe takes the message into schools, targeting Grade 3 and 4 students and testing their knowledge on road safety. Our pilot program late last year uncovered some concerning statistics, including that more than 56% of students required further education on knowing the difference between stop and give way signs and what they must do; and more

than 55% of students required further education regarding getting in and out of cars safely. We will roll out this education program more broadly through schools this year, and will continue to highlight areas where further education is needed, and provide schools with the resources to inform their students. I know it seems common sense to many people, but there must be blanket observance and reinforcement in order for these messages to get through. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Each and every one of us must be an advocate of these road safety messages at home, school, and work – if we don’t take action the consequences could be deadly.

hile it took several weeks for the final results of the 2018 Tasmanian election to be tallied, it was clear on election night that the Liberal Party would be returned to govern in majority for a second four-year term. The RACT was pleased to note the funding commitments promised by the party during the election campaign that related specifically to road safety and road infrastructure improvements. While health and education were often identified as key issues during the campaign, road infrastructure spending was also a clear priority. The RACT was quick to set an agenda in this space, announcing 18 road funding priorities in September last year, well before any election campaign began, using a range of statistical and qualitative data to determine our priorities. These included the 2017 RACT member survey completed by almost 7000 members, Tasmanian crash data, AusRAP data and RACT Regional Advisory Group input. In summary, these road funding priorities were broadly broken into six major categories: • A 10-year plan for the Bass Highway. • A 10-year plan for Greater Hobart transport. • Improving Tasmanian tourist roads. • Road safety upgrades across the state. • The continuation of the 10-year Midland Highway upgrade. • Upgrade all roads to a minimum 3 star Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) rating. We have kept a watching brief on the election announcements and make our own commitment to members – and the broader Tasmanian community – that we

will closely monitor the implementation of funding promises and will continue to hold the new government to account. The new Code of Practice for Fuel Price Boards in Tasmania takes effect on 7 May 2018. The Code of Practice ensures that the price advertised on the petrol price board is the full price, rather than a discounted price. The Code of Practice also regulates the manner in which changed prices are displayed. You may have already noticed a change in the way your local petrol station is displaying their fuel pricing. Last year, retailers were given a 180-day lead-in period to make any necessary changes to comply with the new regulations. RACT lobbied the State Government over a number of years to have this change made to make it easier for consumers to make a choice of retailer when it comes to purchasing fuel. It is fantastic to see this finally come to fruition. We welcomed our first guests to the newly developed Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge during March. We believe Tasmanian tourism is going from strength to strength and the addition of the pavilions will be another drawcard for the east coast region and Tasmania as a whole. We are especially delighted to have been able to bring this vision to life through the support of local Tasmanian businesses including Liminal Architecture for beautiful design, Cordwell Lane for masterful construction and Brett Torossi for her vision and leading the project. The works are part of a larger Freycinet Lodge renewal, which also includes six new Hazards View rooms and an accessible suite in the main Freycinet Lodge building. The RACT received grant funding of $1 million from the Australian and Tasmanian Governments through the Tasmania Jobs and Investment Fund for this project. The RACT RoadSafe online road safety resource is now available for use in Grade 3 and 4 classrooms throughout the state. It is designed for teachers to use as a standalone learning tool, but we will consider requests for school visits. We are excited to invite schools to register their interest for a facilitated classroom session during Road Safety Week 2018 – which is week one of term two (30 April to 6 May). SPOTLIGHT ON ROAD SAFETY

he spotlight will firmly be on road safety from 30 April to 6 May with activities around the state as part of Road Safety Week. Road Safety Week is held in the first week of May each year to highlight awareness about the need for road safety. The week is a national event originated and co-ordinated by Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Inc. (sarahgroup.org), a not-for-profit incorporated association. The campaign’s objectives are to encourage road users to share the road responsibly, actively commit to safeguarding the lives and health of all road users (including pedestrians), and to protect vulnerable road users (particularly those who work on roads to assist and protect us). Prominent buildings and landmarks such as the town halls in Hobart (pictured) and Launceston, Salamanca Place,

Leven Bridge in Ulverstone, Burnie Makers Centre and Devonport Goliath Silos will be lit up in yellow to raise awareness. A Young Driver Symposium will be held in Hobart on 1 May to discuss the over-representation of young drivers in road trauma. Tasmanians aged between 17 and 25 make up 11% of the driving population, but represent 30% of serious casualties. Young Tasmanians aged 16 to 19 are also invited to enter the Road Safety Week video competition for the best 30-second road safety commercial. Entries close midnight on 22 April. YOUR VIEWS Under the surface

I refer to Lewis Prince’s letter and the Department of State Growth reply published in Journeys February/March 2018. I believe the latter contribution had hallmarks of a script from the popular British comedy Yes, Minister, with the quote ‘occasionally they do occur’ resembling a classic Sir Humphrey line. In my view the State Growth reply confirms we are being provided with inferior surfaces on our roads, including, but not restricted to, the largely three-lane Midland Highway. Not four lanes as promised by both Federal and State governments. Ongoing inconvenience as contractors work to patch up the below-standard and budget-inhibited new road sections is also revealed. As a frequent driver on the Midland Highway the increasing channels, ruts, holes, developing cattle grids

and general crumbling of surfaces less than 12 months old is a scandal. The Government and State Growth need to take responsibility. The relevant State Government Minister and/or Treasurer would do well to take note of recently completed and significantly superior substantial road upgrades on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The durability, comfort and safety of their surfaces is stark in comparison. Other than for cost, the suggestion asphalt can’t be used doesn’t seem to stick (pardon the pun). Why, then, have at least two recent attempts been made to improve the East Derwent Highway from the Bowen Bridge through Risdon with a bitumen spray and aggregate roll-in process? Some of that high-use road is already crumbling, with a section resembling a cattle grid. Surely there is an asphalt plant close to that area. Regrettably as we experience the

Road safety concerns

In the last Journeys (February/March 2018), a correspondent wrote about being tailgated by a truck with lights flashing. It must have been very worrying. We share the roads with each other, and with commercial vehicles who deliver food and products to all of us. The roads do not belong to just us RACT members. And when you share, you have to give as well as take. As a gesture of equality and consideration, perhaps we slower drivers might consider other vehicles who want or need to drive safely and legally closer to the speed limit than we do.

Perhaps we might consider pulling over just briefly to let these vehicles get past. I’d prefer to have a faster vehicle ahead of me than behind. We might also remove their temptation to pass us dangerously. We have no right to impede other traffic. It’s an offence. The name of the game is still getting from A to B safely in a reasonable time. I agree with Derek regarding the horrifying speed some trucks go on the highway (February/March Journeys). I often travel between Devonport and Launceston and what could be a pleasant trip turns into a nightmare at times. It seems to make no difference whether the trucks are empty or loaded, with or without a trailer. I once found myself, in a small car, sandwiched between two trucks that seemed to be racing each other. To me, there are accidents waiting to happen. Vivien Davies, Devonport

Roadkill concern

In response to Angela Prosser-Green’s letter in the December/January issue of Journeys, I too am appalled by the number of dead animals we see on Tasmanian roads. Our wildlife is precious and I agree with Angela that education campaigns might go some way to mitigate the problem (avoid driving on country roads at night, etc.) and I support her urge to find some kind of solution. However, I believe her suggestion that ultrasonic whistles should be fitted to vehicles is not the answer. Angela’s observation that she has not encountered animals since fitting whistles I think is more likely down to coincidence rather than the effectiveness of the devices. refer to the study undertaken by Dr Helena Bender of the University of Melbourne Auditory stimuli as a method to deter kangaroos in agricultural and road environments. To quote from the abstract of Dr Bender’s paper: ‘The high frequency signals produced by the Roo Guard and the Shu Roo are

artificial sounds at frequencies to which kangaroos are less sensitive. Captive trials with eastern grey and red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) found no change in vigilance level in response to the Roo Guard or Shu Roo. Field trials found the relative density of free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos also did not change in the presence of the Roo Guard. Field trials with the Shu Roo did not result in a reduction in the rate of kangaroo-vehicle collisions, suggesting that artificial sounds that use high or ultrasonic frequencies are not effective for deterring kangaroos.’ Dr Bender’s study focuses on kangaroos, but similar studies have found similar results for other species of native wildlife. John Young (Journeys February/ March 2018) appears to have some misconceptions about cycling. Firstly, the 1.5m overtaking rule is designed to protect vulnerable road users from being squashed by cars. I’m yet to hear of a vehicle and driver being crushed beneath a 15kg bike. Secondly, roads are not built and funded by motor vehicles. They are built and funded largely by taxation and council rates. A tiny percentage of your registration fee goes towards road funding. As cyclists pay the same taxes as the rest of the community, they are contributing to road construction costs. As for John’s claims about bicycle registration, the only country which has this is Japan. Other countries that have trialled registration such as Switzerland abandoned the idea because it cost more to implement than the tiny amount of money it raised. With Hobart streets gridlocked

regularly due to vehicle crashes, we should be encouraging more people to use bikes as a sustainable transport option for the future. Rod Mason, Geilston Bay

John Young from Devonport was critical of new 1.5m passing laws to protect people riding bicycles in Tasmania. But the passing law is recognition that people driving cars pose a much greater danger to people on bicycles and so should take more responsibility for avoiding a crash. Roads are paid for through collected tax revenue, not vehicle registration. Most adults who ride bicycles pay tax, and most also own cars, so have contributed to the cost of roads. Also, bicycles don’t create the wear and tear on roads that cars do.

Bicycle registration is an answer looking for a non-existent problem. Most of the money raised would go to administrative costs, it would deter people from riding which would be bad for people’s health and traffic congestion. No other country has it, and it would do nothing to help police who can already pull riders over if they break the law. Alison Hetherington, Bicycle Network Tasmania

roome-based street artist Sobrane has transformed the external wall of the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery into a spectacular mural of a flight of Yellowtail Black Cockatoos. Sobrane spent her two-week residency at the Gallery, painting the 24m wall in vibrant colours. ‘Bringing my love for creatures out onto walls for the community to experience, whether they are large walls like the silo in Victoria or the smaller canvas as in an exhibition, is what it’s all about!’ she said. Our winter vehicle advice RACT Patrols and Contractors often see the result of poor maintenance out on the roadside during the cold, dark winter months. There are some simple checks you can make to ensure your vehicle is winter-ready.

Tyre condition, tread depth and pressures Poor tyre condition, especially low tread levels, can be particularly dangerous in wet or icy conditions. Low tread levels are more likely to result in aquaplaning during wet weather. This can result in a complete loss of control. Importantly, don’t forget to check the tread on the inside edges of your tyres. Turn your front wheels to full lock to easily inspect the inside edges. You should have at least 1.5mm of tread across the full surface of the tread – any less and you are getting into dangerous territory when the roads are wet, not to mention potentially being booked for driving an unroadworthy vehicle. Refer to your vehicle handbook or tyre placard for correct tyre pressures. Windscreen condition and wiper rubbers There is nothing worse (or more dangerous) than not being able to see where you’re

going. Replacing wiper rubbers is a relatively easy DIY task if you are a little bit handy. If not, see your mechanic because if you mess it up, scratched windscreens can be expensive to replace. Battery condition Are the terminals clean and tight, how old is it? Winter months are very hard on car batteries. Our policy is that headlights should be switched on for all highway driving. If you can’t see other motorists, they can’t see you. If your headlights are broken or not working properly, get them replaced. It is also an offence to use high beam headlights within 200m of a moving vehicle. Apart from the danger posed to other road users, you can be fined and lose one demerit point.

he Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is running a week of activities to keep children busy during the April school holidays. This year’s Children’s Festival, titled Create!, will be held over six days from 17-22 April and is supported by the City of Hobart, Detached Cultural Organisation and the Allport Bequest. FIRST DRIVES HOLDEN COMMODORE DARREN MOODY

lmost 40 years and four generations of Australian-built Holden Commodores has ended, but that isn’t the end of the Commodore nameplate. Its replacement is from the GM global large-car program, built in Rüsselsheim, Germany and sold in Europe as an Opel, UK as a Vauxhall and the USA as a Buick. Now that might not sound too much like the Commodore we know, but Holden design, drivetrain and vehicle dynamics experts have been involved since its global inception to add those things that Australians know as ‘Commodore personality’. In a category where size does matter, the ZB doesn’t disappoint. While in every external dimension the new Commodore is smaller than the outgoing VF, it is still bigger than the VT series that preceded it. Gone from the new range is a booted Commodore, replaced with a hatch design that adds some additional practicality as well as assisting designers to provide a sleek and modern look. A sportwagon is included in the range, as is a ‘hi-rider’ Tourer, which sits about 18mm higher than the sport wagon in an attempt to lure some of those SUV buyers to the Commodore range. The model range is a little complicated. Entry level is LT, which is available with a 2.0L turbo petrol or diesel option. RS is available with a 2.0L turbo petrol or AWD V6 option. RS-V and VXR are a V6 AWD configuration only. Calais is a 2.0 turbo petrol or diesel, but is available in Tourer form with V6 AWD. Calais-V is V6 AWD in both the hatch and Tourer form. Sportwagons are available in LT, RS, RS-V models. To go with the new design, drivetrains have had a huge change. The stock drivetrain is a turbo four-cylinder driving the front wheels only, and before you say ‘we have seen a four-cylinder Commodore before’, erase that old car from your memory. The new engine delivers 191kW and 350Nm, which exceeds both the power and torque of the base spec engine in the superseded model, and matches the torque in the old 3.6L V6. 32

It is, however, designed to run optimally on 95RON Premium fuel. The 2.0L turbo engine is the premium offering in Europe, but we get it as base specification. Official fuel consumption is 7.4L/100km (LT) on the combined cycle. Joining the turbo petrol is a 2.0L turbo diesel, also driving the front wheels only with official combined cycle economy of a frugal 5.6L/100km. The diesel offers a huge 400Nm of torque while providing 125kW. Topping the range and likely to attract most buyers initially is the V6 AWD variant. The 3.6L engine is an evolution of the previous model and delivers 235kW with 381Nm with a combined cycle of 8.9L/100km. Like the four-cylinder engines, the V6 is mounted ‘east-west’, which was pivotal to reducing the width of the ZB externally while not actually reducing occupant accommodation space. This was achieved by significantly reducing the transmission tunnel width, which is now only needed to accommodate the driveshaft to the rear differential. Both petrol drivetrains get GM’s latest 9-speed auto transmission, tuned to our local conditions. Holden drivetrain engineers have ensured it is well-calibrated for Australian conditions. The diesel option gets an 8-speed. V6 models have a braked towing capacity of 2100kg, while four-cylinder models can tow 1800kg. Holden Australia vehicle dynamics engineers have their fingerprints all over the new Commodore, with Australiaonly damper and electric power steering tuning suited to our at-times challenging road network. They needed to work with two different suspension configurations as the fourcylinder models have a more conventional McPherson Strut four-link design, while the V6 AWD vehicles have a more complicated Hi-Per strut five-link design. Calais models get a different suspension tune than other models, more in line with a more comfortable ride. Entry-level LT boasts a long list of standard safety features including forward-facing camera with autonomous emergency

braking; pedestrian detection; lane keep assist and departure warning; following distance indicator; forward collision alert; auto headlamps; advanced park assist; rear-view camera; front and rear parking sensors; and rain-sensing wipers. Progressively the model range adds more safety. ANCAP has awarded a 5-Star crash rating for the new Commodore. Connectivity is seamless with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto available. 7” or 8” touchscreen displays are easy to navigate and wireless phone charging is available for compatible phones on higher spec models. On lower spec models you’ll need your connected phone for navigation, while higher spec models have it embedded. Hi-end models also get Bose audio. The new Commodore appears very well screwed together with both internal fit and finish to a reasonably high standard. Holden has kept the Calais to an understated design, but I think it is just too plain with the RS-V looking a more premium model when compared side-by-side. VXR warrants some attention as it gets everything on offer in the other models and more. Adaptive dampers are standard, as are larger Brembo brakes. 20” alloy wheels with the latest Michelin rubber keep you glued to the road. Switchable VXR mode tightens up suspension and steering as well as transmission shifts for those twisty bits of road common in Tasmania.

To further separate the VXR from the rest I would have liked to see some extra power extracted from the V6, given a V8 option is no longer available. The best we got was a bespoke Australian exhaust, making the VXR sound a little more athletic. Does Commodore DNA still live on? Visually I’d say no. This is a significant departure from previous models, but I could say the same when the Commodore went from the first generation VB to the second generation VN. And driving, I’ll have to wait until I get one on home soil for a final verdict. Will Australians buy Commodores like they have in the past? Unlikely, as the country is obsessed by SUVs, but I’ll guarantee anyone who does drive one will be pleasantly surprised. Standard warranty is three years, service intervals are 12,000km or 12 months with total servicing costs over three years for petrol models $817, while the diesel is $877. Entry level LT has a drive away price of $35,990; RS V6 AWD will cost you $42,490, topping out with the VXR which will cost you just under $61,000 drive away. FINANCE IT WITH US! FIRST DRIVES NISSAN NAVARA DARREN MOODY

t’s hard to believe we are at Series III already, within three years of Navara’s original launch, but you have to look backwards a little bit to understand why. When Nissan launched the then-named NP300 Navara in 2015, they had bravely set about to do away with the traditional leaf-sprung rear suspension in their dual-cab models (which all their competitors still use) and replace it with a more car-like coil spring set-up in a bid to improve ride quality. Unfortunately for Nissan they didn’t get it quite right. Any substantial weight in the tray or on the towball saw the rear end drop substantially, exacerbating slow, unresponsive steering because of reduced weight on the front wheels. The Series II upgrade also failed to totally address this fundamental issue. Enter Series III and you now have an upgrade that has had substantial testing and validation in Australia by the Chief Vehicle Assessment Specialist (CVAS) team, while also benchmarking leading opposition brands. Navara now sits 25mm higher unladen and 40mm higher at maximum load. The fivelink rear suspension in the dual-cabs features a newly developed dual rate coil spring that uses a lower spring rate for unladen and low payloads to ensure premium ride quality, with the higher rate managing higher payloads and towing while maintaining better vehicle posture and good ride quality.

The other criticism from the original model was the slowness of the steering to driver inputs, causing Nissan to rework the steering rack with a quicker ratio. A 14% lower steering ratio has reduced lock-to-lock from 4.1 to 3.4 turns. In addition to the suspension changes, ST-X king and dual-cab models get an ‘around view’ camera set-up, giving a bird’s eye view of your vehicle via the 7” infotainment screen. It also has two ISOFIX child restraint anchor positions in the dual cab with a digital speedo for all SL, ST and ST-X models from June production onwards. Rear-view camera is now standard on all pick-up models, although cab chassis variants miss out. The 2.3L single or twin turbo diesel engines continue to perform relatively strongly. I only drove models with the seven-speed auto transmission that went almost unnoticed (which is a good thing). There are no changes to power, torque or fuel consumption, and a six-speed manual is standard across the range. At the national launch, Nissan wanted to show off their work on the suspension and steering, so they provided dual-cabs that were carrying 650kg, towing laden trailers or were empty to demonstrate that the new Navara was up to the job under any circumstances.

‘Navara now sits 25mm higher unladen and 40mm higher at maximum load.’ After driving the entire range in both suburban, highway and country areas, I can report there is considerable improvement in the vehicle stance with and without load. Ride quality, especially with a load or towing, is clearly better, while improvements are less evident unladen. Steering is definitely quicker than the previous model, but it still feels a little slow and isn’t as precise as its main competitors. With 27 variants ranging from a single-cab chassis to the top of the range dual-cab ST-X 4x4, there is a Navara for every occasion. The most popular in the range is the ST dual-cab 4x4 auto, which incidentally would be my pick. This model will cost you just under $54,000 drive away. FINANCE IT WITH US! FIRST DRIVES MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS DARREN MOODY

resh metal from Mitsubishi has been a bit thin on the ground in recent years, so when the new Eclipse Cross surfaced recently it was a good opportunity to see if they had been occupying their time constructively. Of course the Eclipse Cross is an SUV, like just about everything else new on sale these days. According to Mitsubishi it slots right in between their ASX and Outlander SUVs. On this basis you could describe it as a small-mid-sized vehicle. At launch in Hobart on the scorching Australia Day weekend there were two equipment grades, LS and Exceed, both fitted with a new 1.5L turbo petrol engine delivering a respectable 110kW and 250Nm from 2000rpm. A stepped 8-speed CVT auto is standard across both models, as is 2WD. Exceed can also be specified with switchable-mode AWD. It’s likely we will see a cheaper ES entry-level model later in the year if your budget is a little lower. Externally the Eclipse Cross flags a new design direction from Mitsubishi. It’s unmistakably different from the crowd. The side profile is a wedge shape, with deep contours up the sides and a double window tailgate with a full width reflector/LED brakelight splitting the rear glass. Inside, the Exceed has leather trim, colour heads-up display (HUD), and the driver’s seat has full electric adjustment (LS is manual), but lacks a memory setting. Exceed front seats are also heated. All models get 7” touchscreen functionality. Audio and apps can also be accessed via a touchpad controller, which I’ve never been a huge fan of, but I’ll reserve my view until I have some more time in the vehicle. Full bluetooth, Apple/Android phone integration and two USB ports round out connectivity. Keyless entry and start and an electric park brake are also standard in both models. The second row has two ISOFIX mountings and 60/40 split fold with slide and 36

recline function, allowing you to strike the right balance between rear passenger legroom and luggage space. 18” alloys are also standard on both models. Safety in both models is well looked after and ANCAP has awarded the Eclipse Cross 5 stars. Each grade gets seven airbags, forward collision mitigation (AEB), lane departure warning, auto high-beam assist, reversing camera, auto wipers and headlights. Exceed adds adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, around view monitor and a system called Ultrasonic Mis-acceleration Mitigation System (UMS), which prevents or mitigates crashes when pressing the accelerator rather than the brake when stopped or at low speed. I’m not sure how I can test that one! LS is an extremely well specified model that only misses out on a handful of features available in the Exceed. Omissions are LED headlights, HUD, dual-zone climate control, sunroof, around-view monitor, heated leather trim seats and the previously mentioned additional safety features. Warranty is five years/100,000km, and the first three years’ scheduled servicing will cost $1100. LS kicks off at $30,500, Exceed 2WD is $36,000 with AWD adding a further $2500 (plus on-road costs). I’m keeping this one a little longer than usual so will get a feel for living with an Eclipse Cross for a while. Look out for part two of Darren’s review in the June/July edition of Journeys. FIRST DRIVES PEUGEOT 5008 DARREN MOODY

t wasn’t that many years ago Peugeot didn’t have an SUV in their range. As the world’s hunger to buy SUVs increased, Peugeot struck up a deal with Mitsubishi to re-body/badge some SUVs to get some of that action. This served a purpose at the time, but may not have done the brand that many favours. These days, with that deal well behind them, we have a French-designed, engineered and built SUV that is more than worthy of a closer look. The 5008 (that’s five thousand and eight) is a seven-seat derivative of the 3008, with some stretched dimension to accommodate the two extra seats in the third row that fit neatly under the floor when not in use. Suitable for smaller adults for a short period, they are more designed for those times where you pick up an extra couple of kids from footy practice and need to cart them home. The third row can also be removed in seconds to provide a bit more storage space if you need it. While the Peugeot brand may be seen as mainstream in Europe, Australians see it as premium, so with this in mind Peugeot Australia has gone for a value, not price-led offering. In Australia the 5008 isn’t offered in base specification vehicles offered elsewhere. The range starts with Allure, then GT-Line and tops out with GT. Allure and GT-Line are powered by a 121kW, 240Nm 1.6L turbo petrol engine, and GT gets a 2.0L turbo diesel delivering 133kW and 400Nm. All are mated to a six-speed torque converter auto, which is a great relief given some of the horrible robotised manual and CVT transmissions we have seen from the French marque in recent times. The interior is a treat to experience with quality materials, excellent fit and finish, with just enough ‘Frenchness’ to be different. The small steering wheel with the 12.3” TFT screen customisable instrument cluster viewed over the top works nicely. Most, but not all, controls (such as active cruise control) are logical and there’s the Frenchness, but you will get used to them quickly. The 8” centre touchscreen protruding from the dashboard is well-positioned, and of course full smartphone connectivity is available. Wireless phone charging is also standard (on compatible phones). The second row is three individual seats, all with their own ISOFIX restraint anchor points, which is unique in Australia.

The 5008 brings good safety credentials with an impressive suite of safety features including AEB, active cruise control with speed limiting, speed sign recognition, lane departure warning and 360 degree camera. The curtain airbags cover all three rows, which isn’t always the case in seven-seat vehicles. The GT also adds LED headlights, lane keep assist and active blind spot monitoring. A five-star ANCAP rating has been awarded across the range. For me the 5008 felt a little like a people-mover wrapped in SUV clothes, particularly when it is only available as a front-wheel drive. The 5008 does have an optional ‘grip control’ system that puts a little bit of electronic trickery in the stability and traction control systems to perform better on mud, snow and sandy surfaces, but it’s still only the front wheels driving. On the road the 5008 was a real surprise. Ride comfort and handling was excellent, with general road imperfections absorbed, and some time on gravel roads did nothing to shake my confidence, with predictable steering and reasonably good body control for an SUV. The 400Nm diesel was a treat to drive with little noise protrusion into the cabin. The petrol engine was adequate although we did experience the transmission hunting between gears when heading up a few steeper hills. Peugeot has announced a five-year warranty across the range, backing their confidence in quality. Service intervals are 20,000km/12 months with three years’ servicing costing $1772 for petrol models and $1649 for the GT diesel. Allure will cost you $42,990, GT-Line $46,990 with the GT costing $52,990 (all plus on-road costs).

hen I think ‘BMW’, the words understated, refined and even conservative come to mind. The last thing I’d think of is an unshaven man dressed all in black with gold chains, or a six-legged spiderlike robot, or any of the other unusual elements BMW has introduced to its marketing campaign for the all-new X2. But that’s just the point. BMW isn’t trying to appeal to its traditional target market with the X2. It is breaking new ground into the small-mid SUV market with an extra bit of class – and it works. Added to the understated body colours of black, white, grey and dark blue are gold, vibrant blue and orange. The styling is sleek and low, cutting a sporty look with its highly polished 19” alloy wheels. On the roads of Launceston we were quite visible, creating a bit of a stir as we pulled up at our accommodation, Aspect Tamar Valley Resort (better known to locals as Grindelwald). Built in the 1980s by the late Roelf Vos, the resort has lost none of its charm in the past 30-odd years. It still has the ‘Swiss village’ feel, which was inspired by a trip by Mr Vos and his wife to Switzerland where they stayed in a quiet lakeside village. 44

‘As the starting point for our Sunday drive, we headed north alongside the Tamar River, past the lush green vineyards and through the historic town of Beaconsfield.’ The development of Grindelwald, which started in 1980, includes the 7ha man-made Lake Louise, a lakeside wedding chapel and houses set on between two and five acres complete with wide eaves, intricately carved balconies, flower boxes and window shutters. The accommodation itself is still popular with families, with on-site indoor pool, mini-golf course and the more recent introduction of ‘bouncy pillows’ (the modern-day, ‘safe’ answer to trampolines). While having undergone a soft refurbishment in recent years, our chalet still retained a lot of the original features and fit-out, but it was clean and comfortable and more than suited our needs.

As the starting point for our Sunday drive, we headed north alongside the Tamar River, past the lush green vineyards and through the historic town of Beaconsfield. On this wide, open stretch of highway the BMW handled very well, providing a comfortable ride with ample room for both front and rear passengers. The front seat design hugs around the lumbar region, giving it a sporty feel to go with its sleek styling. Everything you need – from audio to sat nav to adjusting the height of the head-up display – is at your fingertips and controlled by a well-designed toggle in the centre console. I often find these systems a dangerous distraction on the road, but this one could be operated with ease. We stopped to stretch our legs at the popular holiday spot of Greens Beach, which still maintains that ‘seaside holiday’ feel with a local shop, small playground and expansive stretch of sand that, when we visited, was virtually deserted. You can walk a well-formed track alongside the beach to the headland, taking in the views of Low Head to the east and Narawntapu National Park to the west. We returned the way we came via the Batman Bridge – a source of disappointment for our youngest son who had hoped to see his favourite caped crusader. The sight of the soaring

columns and taught cables of this spectacularly engineered link between the western and eastern shores of the Tamar River was still enough to engender a ‘wow’ from the back seat. Built in the mid-late 1960s, it is reportedly the first cable-stayed bridge in Australia, using a series of cables from the western side to support the 200m-plus span. The design of the BMW adds to its stability on the road. It uses run-flat tyres, so no need for a spare, leaving room in the boot to house the battery, which provides an evenly balanced, well-weighted ride. We could feel this as we weaved our way alongside the river, never once being concerned about the vehicle’s handling along the road. If you’re looking for a classy, well-designed version of the popular small-medium SUV, the BMW X2 is an excellent option. The vehicle we drove was the X2 sDrive 20i with the special M Sport X Package, which is fitted with the TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, and starts at $59,990 drive away. There are other versions coming, including an all-wheel-drive diesel, which would provide more stability for those really wanting to explore Tassie’s far-flung places on their Sunday drive. Not your average watering hole CLAIRE BENNETT The atmosphere at your average pub on a Saturday or Sunday morning could be compared to the wake after a storm. There are few people about, a clean-up is underway, and there’s a vibe of general lethargy. However, there is a country pub 20 minutes south of Hobart that bucks this trend.

f you turn up at the Longley International Hotel on a weekend morning, you will find a community of locals, caravanners, vintage car club members, motorcyclists, families and fit cyclists sipping lattes and listening to tunes. The vibrant atmosphere has been carefully cultivated by David ‘Jak’ Brereton and his wife Jill, who after 16 years are now the pub’s longest licensees. Jill is as outgoing as Jak is quiet. The yin and yang that drives the culture is clearly an asset. Jak is about as authentic as it gets. He doesn’t say much. But his love of the pub and the community around it is evident in everything that he does, from the handmade Huon Pine bar and pergola, to the social club that collects and distributes money to those in need. On-site a new café called the ‘McVilly Brew Stop’ is open on weekends and public holidays from 8am, catering to cyclists and tourists riding or driving the beautiful mountain roads between Hobart and the Huon Valley. Halfway through their morning ride, cyclists swing by for a coffee and, typically, a bacon and egg roll. The McVilly Brew Stop is run by local Vaughan McVilly, whose father was the famous six-time Australian road cycling champion Graham McVilly. Vaughan could see the potential of the pub as a perfect mid-ride rest point and Jak embraced the opportunity to welcome a new crowd to his venue. ‘He’s a bit loose,’ Jak says of Vaughan, ‘but people seem to love him. He brings a lot of energy.’ The McVilly Brew Stop is part of a larger southern Tasmanian cycling experience

being cultivated by Vaughan, who has been involved with the cycling industry all his life. ‘The broader experience includes McVilly Café and Cycles at Hobart’s Macquarie Point. It’s situated at the end of the cycleway that finishes at McVilly Drive, which is named after my Dad. We have bike hire, tours and a shuttle bus service to the top of the south’s best trails,’ he said. It’s fitting that the McVilly Brew Stop at the Longley International is now a must-do destination for cyclists as the half-way point on their daily rides. The pub was built in 1861 on what used to be the only road south out of Hobart. It is at the half-way point between Hobart and Huonville, and was built as an ideal rest spot for riding not bikes, but horses. The pub included stables to house the horses so that travellers could stop for the night. Now those stables house a coffee machine. ‘If you go halfway up the road, there is a concrete water tank on the side of the old Huon Highway for the horses to have another drink before they got to Huonville,’ says Jak. It is also a perfect spot to rest for those touring the region in a car or caravan. Directly opposite the pub is approximately 1.5 acres of parkland on the banks of the beautiful North-West Bay River. The land is owned by the pub, and Jak and Jill welcome visitors to camp or stop with their caravan and use the pub’s facilities. ‘People are welcome to camp here. The pub has a really homely feel, which is ideal for families,’ says Jill. Campers can enjoy breakfast at the Brew Stop before heading off for their day’s activities and then return for lunch or dinner (for a famous Longley Parmy).

Brushes with fame The Longley International also has a great reputation for carefully curated music. Live music is on every Friday night in the bar and Sunday afternoons in the beer garden. It is ‘home’ to the Wolfe Brothers, who have played regularly at the venue for many years and still come back to play every chance they get. The pergola is named the ‘Mildo Wolfe Pavilion’, after their father. The beer garden, where the Brew Stop and outdoor stage is situated, has a pergola that has become a drawcard in its own right – it is constructed with massive Huon pine logs. It must be the only Huon pine pergola anywhere in the world. Jack recovered the timber from Lake Burbury. He used to go out and camp for a week and bring the timber to shore in a 14-foot tinny. The pub is also famous for having the longest Huon pine bar in the world, and was recently in Qantas in-flight magazine’s feature on Australia’s top 100 country hotels. Inside the pub, the walls are covered with framed photographs of the significant points in its history. The original 1861 pub burnt to the ground and has since been rebuilt twice. A picture of Prince Philip having a beer in the pub after the 1967 bushfires when he visited with the Queen is just one of many photographs that are well worth a look. The Longley International was also in the recent ABC TV series Rosehaven, as the set for the local pub where the show’s star, Tasmanian comedian Luke McGregor, and his co-star Celia Pacquola get up to some hilarious antics.

A ROCKY ROAD

When it comes to towering mountain views, Tasmanians are spoiled for choice. YD Bar-Ness takes a look at some spectacular quartzite landscapes that are lesser known, but still within driving distance and a short, easy walk away.

n Australia’s most rugged state, we are spoiled for spectacular mountain views from our towns. At the waterfront of Hobart, kunanyi/Mt Wellington dominates overhead, and on the hills of Launceston, the massive plateau of Ben Lomond looms on the horizon. But these easily approachable ranges, made of dark, heavy, volcanic dolerite, are not the only geological features on the island. The famous photographs of shining white peaks: Frenchman’s Cap, the Arthur Range, and Federation Peak – these are remote quartzite mountains with an entirely different character. They’re harder to reach and defended by boggy trails and storm-filled clouds. If you want to have a look up close at the quartzite, you’re going to need to choose your route carefully.

What is quartzite? The quintessential landscape of the south-west of Tasmania is surreal and beautiful – the ice-carved white mountains shine with crystals over the sodden moorlands of buttongrass. The white quartzite began more than a billion years ago as sand grains washed off long-eroded mountains. These accumulated grains have been tortured and twisted by titanic forces, baked by geological pressure, and then exposed again to the wind and rains. Why is it hidden, out of reach? In very recent geological times, glaciers have carved spires and pinnacles, and deposited material to valleys below. The valleys are less fertile and more marshy than the volcanic rocks of south-eastern Tasmania, and therefore instead of towering eucalyptus trees grow buttongrass moorlands. Agriculture and animal husbandry are a tremendous challenge in these storm-drenched landscapes, and so only mining and hydroelectric road networks have developed. Where can I see it without hiking on steep muddy trails? Fortunately for the mountain-scenery enthusiast, there are a few locations where you can get a good look and feel of the quartzite landscape. 48

North-west: If you are on the north-west coast of the state, there is a remarkable range of sloping quartzite cliffs at Rocky Cape National Park. While the vegetation is much more familiar than that of the south-west, the shining white cliffs have the same starkness of form as the inland mountains. These are the oldest exposed rocks known in Tasmania – at least 1.3 billion years old! You can approach by motor vehicle from either side, and very short beachside trails touch the base of the cliffs. South: From southern Tasmania, travel up the Derwent Valley and past Maydena – you will soon reach a mountain pass where the rainforests give way to an open vista of buttongrass. Continue driving towards Strathgordon, a hydroelectric workers’ village now transformed into a base for anglers and bushwalkers. As you travel onto the dry land separating the giant artificial Lakes Pedder and Gordon, you will turn a corner and be presented with a jaw-dropping vista: the Sentinels Range. As the road descends toward the range, the white slabs tower overhead. A small picnic shelter at the base of the range can provide protection from any storms that come past, and also marks the beginning of the summit trail. If you are looking for a marvellous wilderness day trip, this is an excellent option: cross a bubbling creek, continue on the muddy trails, enter a steep gorge between quartzite towers, and attain the summit ridge. You’ll be treated with views over the flat waters to either side. Just a few kilometres away, lost beneath the still waters of New Lake Pedder impoundment to the south, are the famous quartzite sand beaches of the original (and much smaller) Lake Pedder. Here, you are in the very heart of quartzite country, in the heart of south-west Tasmania.

n an inspiring addition to the sumptuous bespoke interiors of the Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge, a series of artworks has been specially commissioned to grace the walls of each elegant dwelling. The Pavilions occupy the space between the earth and sky, between the granite and the water, and their tactile, sensuous earthy spaces have been reflected in each of these works. The design team consisting of Peta Heffernan, Bec Wilkie, Belen Chirivella Vina and Brett Torossi worked together to commission the light box works of local artists Helene Weeding and collaborators Brigitte de Villiers and Bill Chromer. Both artists were inspired by the contrasting elements of the wild and sublime landscapes of Freycinet National Park. Brigitte de Villiers and Bill Chromer make up the two halves of Landslide, an artistic partnership that sees a pattern maker and a geologist collaborating to create extraordinarily unique, organic digital images. The creative process for this project involved selecting tiny shards of microscopic rock, which Bill and Brigitte carefully collected from the local

terrain outside the national park, before they were magnified through a specially designed microscope. The shards were sliced so thin that light was able to pass through and form the foundation of the resulting digital images. For Brigitte, exploring each new slide under the microscope is like discovering a whole new vista. She’s constantly surprised by how the textures so eloquently encapsulate the Tasmanian landscapes she encounters on her bush walks, citing The Hazards as a key example. ‘I find it fascinating to see how I can alter the mood or drama of a pattern with polarised light,’ she says. ‘So many rocks…an infinite array of textures in time… it’s an almost addictive process that I never tire of.’ Helene Weeding’s commissioned works have been crafted with more traditional materials such as watercolour, ink and pen, along with a healthy dose of encouragement from the east coast landscape. ‘I’ve been camping and staying in the Freycinet area for as long as I can remember. Whenever I recall that specific part

of the east coast I immediately think of the sky, sea, camp fires and misty mornings and nights,’ she says. ‘All five of the commissioned works reflect these memories for me.’ Initially Helene created prototypes of paintings that she felt reflected the overall feel of the Freycinet landscape. Once the five pieces were chosen, she visited the pavilions’ building sites to see where each work would be installed, taking in the feel of the surrounding environment. Each of her final works has been carefully designed to reflect the unique character of each individual pavilion’s surrounds – a creative process that has proven extremely gratifying for Helene. ‘Mind you, I can’t wait to see them finally installed in the pavilions,’ she says. ‘Only then will I know if I have succeeded to the extent I hoped for. There are so many variables – focused light sources, natural light, placement in the rooms, the light boxes when they’re turned off versus when they’re turned on. So I just have to imagine how each one will look. I can only hope that they will exceed my wildest expectations.’ APRIL / MAY 2018

GETTING BETTER WITH AGE

ince 1948, Tasmanians have been titillated by the annual spectacle of the Old Nick Company’s Uni Revue. While early iterations were very much about performance and theatre, more recently the Revues have focused on increasing production values. Much of this production is both film and television parodies, examples of which can be viewed on their YouTube channel youtube.com/theoldnickcompany. Veteran Revue performer and former director of two Revues Justin Smith has been writing, filming and editing the Uni Revues’ audio visual treats for about 10 years. We have a chat with him about the process: Talk to us about Uni Revue on film In part, the idea behind the short pieces of film is to create online attention to promote the upcoming Revue seasons. In 2017 Bogans went viral, with an estimated 250k views on Facebook, and is also seeing a bit of a resurgence on YouTube currently. Follow-up Straight outta Kempton had similar traction. We have several more on the slate, including Tas TV to the tune of Galway Girl [which has been released since this interview] and Ran out of Beer, a parody on Sia’s highly downloaded 2015 hit Chandelier. Where are you and the Revue team drawing your ideas from? Some of the pieces of film are from song parodies that were produced in our previous years’ Revues. Our audience is often made up of ‘repeat offenders’ – people who return to see us year after year. Our audience already have a connection with the piece, however when they see it online, it usually has a different treatment than the original stage performance. Part of what keeps the Revue going is striving for new ideas that are meaningful to our audience. 56

What attracted you to the Uni Revue in the first place? Pure fun. It is probably one of the most ridiculous things you can be involved with in your life. Every year it just gets more stupid. The only thing that competes with that would be going into politics, and I certainly don’t want to do that. Why do you think Tasmanians keep coming back in droves to watch it year after year? It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, yet it is amazing just how many people’s cup of tea it is. If we don’t work hard, and commit to creating big performances, our audience knows – and we are instantly aware that they know. The filmed parts are important. They have to be efficient, and deliver humour quickly. It sounds simple. It’s not, but that’s our job – make it funny, make it new.

This year, the Revue is titled Fifty Shades of White. How hard is it to devise a title in the year of an election? With elections come a lot of promises and opinions. Some of our most successful shows have been in the year of election. Taken from the global success of the books and films of Fifty Shades of Grey – Fifty Shades of White wasn’t a stretch of the imagination. It is a good way of summing up the current political environment in Tasmania. At Uni, students begin to develop a social conscience, a political conscience and their own identity. The Revue cast reflects this. Regardless, our goal is to be relevant, memorable and, above all, incredibly funny. The 2018 Uni Revue is directed by Nick Paine and Zeb Dwyer.

acking for a holiday is hard enough, let alone having to pack for a number of seasons in a single trip. After travelling from a sunny Mediterranean climate to a country with winter nearly year-round, clearing the room in our suitcases to replace our shorts and flip-flops with snuggly snow coats was the hardest part. After a gorgeous scenic drive from Oslo airport into the city on our first 5 degree day of the holiday, we were soon welcomed by a very unique city offering the best of boutique architecture and diverse city sights. Starting with a peculiar entrance to our hotel surrounded by an old-style movie theatre, artistic sculptures and revolving doors, we were soon making ourselves at

home drinking our free hot chocolate in the hotel lobby. After a few top-ups, we decided it was time to put on our beanies, wrap ourselves up in our scarves and go and explore this captivating city. Our cameras quickly started to fill up with photos of old Norwegian buildings and artefacts, city parks and trolls – my favourite! Best part of the day was coming across a quaint little shop full of authentic and traditional Norwegian troll dolls and Viking souvenirs – good thing I ditched the swimmers to fit these babies in because ‘When in Norway’... Next stop, Tromsø. As the skies were starting to get darker and the mist getting thicker, we were starting to lose hope about the reason we came here.

Soon, however, the fog started to lift, so on went the snow jackets ready for another adventure around the cultural city above the Arctic Circle. We woke up the next morning to see everything completely white. It was -9 degrees above the Arctic Circle, with hotel rooftops and streets completely covered in white fluffy snow. This was starting to look promising. Finishing the day with an exquisite dinner at the hotel restaurant, our guilt got the better of us as we indulged in some freshly cooked reindeer. Sorry Rudolph... In the morning we were picked up by our transfer to take us to our boutique Arctic Lodge in the middle of nowhere – the perfect place to see some dancing lights. It took more than three hours and three ferries, but we were finally welcomed by our hosts in Uløybukt. It's a truly remarkable experience waking up in a beautiful family-run lodge with fjord views from the dining table. Soon enough we were provided with snow suits, boots, beanies and gloves ready for the -12 degree day dog-sledding. With snow falling in a serene atmosphere, the frozen toes were worth it.

After trekking through the mountainside with a team of highly trained four-legged professionals, it was time for more hot chocolate and puppy cuddles around the camp fire. With one night left to spare we anxiously waited outside for a clear sky with no light pollution. Three more hours into the night and continual forecast checks, the aurora borealis was on its way to us. And soon enough, here it is! The swift movements of green colours start circling above us as we stand with a frozen nose, fingers and toes. It disappears for a minute… Then back again, brighter than ever! Green lights dance through the skies, around the snow-capped mountains. They dart through the sky as if the colours are waving at us. How long have you been in travel and what travelling experience do you have? I have been in travel for five years, first in Tasmanian travel then I branched out to international. I have been to 21 countries in total. Most recently I did a six-week trip around South America and went to Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. What do you like best about working at RACT Travel? I like the way the clients trust RACT as a company, and the variety of different enquiries I get each day. It keeps it interesting. One day it’s a package to Melbourne, another it could be an around-the-world trip. What is your favourite destination and why? I have two. The first would have to be Italy. I’ve been there twice now and there is a certain feel to the place that I can’t get enough of, and of course the food! The second would be the Galapagos Islands. This blew my mind. I’m such an animal lover and seeing the animals in their natural habitats where they are not afraid of humans was a very special experience. 80

Where would you like your next holiday to be and why? This is such a hard question – can I say the whole world? I’d love to sail around the Maldives. After my last holiday to South America, which was full-on, I’d like to have a relaxing warm holiday where I can snorkel and drink pina coladas. Morocco also interests me – it seems very colourful and exciting. What is your best travel tip? I see so many people rushing around trying to get the best photo. Remember to put the camera down and just enjoy the moment without being behind a lens. Soak it all in and realise how amazing this world is. Jacqui’s travels have taken her to many places around the world, including Stone Henge (above) and the Galapagos Islands (below).
