WELCOME TO OUR NEW-LOOK MAGAZINE

S

ince taking over as editor of Journeys magazine in June last year, I have received a lot of feedback from readers. Most of it has been positive, but one of the main complaints has been that the magazine needed a fresh new look to better reflect the ‘new’ Tasmania. Taking this on board, we worked with our talented in-house graphic designer Alice Agnew to create a more modern, more readable magazine. Inside you’ll still find all of the great stories you enjoy, including community issues, motoring reviews, travel and lifestyle, but with a refreshing new look that makes it easier to read. You will notice some of our old favourites, such as the black crown

competition, have been retired, but have been replaced with fun, interactive activities including a quiz to test your knowledge about what we write about in the magazine. To celebrate our new look, we’ve also packed this issue full of competitions and giveaways, as well as highlighting the extra value you can get out of your membership every day with our Royal Rewards program. Our Travel section has also undergone a refresh, but still contains all the fantastic deals and offers you have come to expect from our partners around the world. As always, we welcome your feedback. Please don’t hesitate to email me at journeys@ract.com.au

Happy reading! Paula Sward, Editor

IN OUR COMMUNITY

FROM THE PRESIDENT Kathryn Westwood

W

ith a Tasmanian election set to occur early next year, the RACT has already placed on the record our road funding priorities for the incoming government. Using feedback from the 2017 RACT member survey, as well as Tasmanian crash data, Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) data and input from our RACT Regional Advisory Group network, we have identified 18 road infrastructure funding priorities for 2017 and beyond in the lead-up to the next state election. Please visit our website to read about the road funding priorities at ract.com.au/Tasmanian-ElectionPriorities. RACT will regularly update the information there with the latest commentary and commitments from the major parties, which will assist you to form your opinion regarding voting intentions. I encourage you and all Tasmanian electors to voice your personal views for safer and more efficient transport directly with your local candidate. RACT has established a website that enables Tasmanian electors to send an email directly to local candidates seeking a commitment for better roads in the lead-up to the next state election. Go to keeptasmaniamoving.com.au, enter your contact details, click send and an email will be sent direct to candidates in your electorate asking them to seriously consider specific road and traffic issues in their community. While we have sought commitments

from each of the three major political parties in Tasmania regarding our 18 road funding priorities, there are other key priorities we have raised including reducing motoring costs, increasing the value of the state as a tourist destination and preparing for future mobility options. The RACT believes that preparing for a changed mobility landscape for electric vehicles, share communities, autonomous vehicles and their infrastructure requirements is overdue, noting other states are well progressed. It will require very significant changes to legislation, regulations and taxes and involve considerable consultation, planning and design by government, industry experts and the community. The Tasmanian Government’s recent announcement that it will establish an electric vehicle working group to begin the strategic rollout of electric vehicle charging stations is welcome. RACT will continue to engage the Government and seek members’ feedback to advocate for safe and adaptable solutions to support the future of mobility.

I would like to acknowledge the passionate and dedicated commitment to the Club and to road safety of Kay Kidd, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Kay was a long-time member of our North West Regional Advisory Committee and keen advocate of youth road safety education and the RYDA program in Tasmania. As we approach the holiday season, there will inevitably be more people travelling on our roads. Please take extra care over the holiday period, make sure you are well rested before long journeys, don’t be distracted by your mobile phone and be courteous to all road users. If you intend to holiday in Tasmania, please come and stay at our properties located in the most spectacular parts of our state – Cradle Mountain, Freycinet and Strahan. As a member you will receive 25% off accommodation. As this will be my last President column for the year, on behalf of the Board I would like to take the opportunity to wish members and their families a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. The two major projects underway within our Destinations business are progressing well. A soft refurbishment of the interior of the main Freycinet Lodge building has been completed in time for the new tourism season. The nine Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet are now open for bookings for stays from 15 March. Members are invited to take advantage of our special ‘test driver’ rate – see page 25 for more details.

The new Hobart-built Gordon River Cruises vessel is taking shape, with the superstructure now in place and the engines having arrived from Europe. Members have the chance to vote on the name for the new vessel – see page 15 for details. Please take extra care on the roads in the coming weeks. Travelling during holiday periods can attract additional risk because of increased traffic, tiredness and people driving in unfamiliar places. If you are celebrating, leave your car at home and get a taxi or Uber, appoint a designated driver or arrange for someone who has not been drinking to pick you up to take you home. Please be safe this holiday season and, on behalf of everyone at RACT, have an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas and New Year.

Be safe this summer

T

he Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is urging us all to be prepared for summer, with the Southern Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook saying Tasmania will experience ‘above normal fire potential’ on the east coast, Derwent Valley and south-east corner of the state, and ‘normal fire potential’ for the remainder of the state. The TFS has developed more than 150 Community Protection Plans for individual communities – check the TFS website to see if there is a Community Protection Plan for your area. You can now develop a Bushfire Survival Plan online by visiting the Bushfire-Ready Neighbourhoods section of the TFS website. For some great tips for preparing your home, see our graphic on page 44-45. During the summer holidays a lot of Tasmanians, their friends and relatives, and visitors will be travelling around exploring our island state. The TFS has developed a fantastic set of tips to keep you safe while out and about in unfamiliar areas.

Know your risk

The declaration of a Total Fire Ban day is an indicator of risk. The TFS may declare Total Fire Bans in some regions or even across the whole state on days when conditions cause fires to become uncontrollable. On Total Fire Ban days – which usually have high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity – activities that may start a fire are prohibited. Fire Danger Ratings are another indicator of your risk. They aren’t a prediction of how likely a bushfire is to happen, but tell us how bad a bushfire could be if it did start on that day. On severe, extreme and catastrophic fire danger days or Total Fire Ban days,

it is best to postpone any trip into the bush because of the dangers of fire starting and moving rapidly. If your travel or activities place you in areas of high risk, you should postpone your trip or plan an alternative route or activity.

Travelling on the road

Driving through smoke, ash and glowing embers is stressful and dangerous. A drive that would normally take five minutes may take several hours through road closures, smoke, embers, fallen trees or power lines. If you are aware of bushfires before you leave, plan an alternative route and do not travel to the affected area. If you come across smoke while travelling, turn around and go back. Listen to the radio and ask locally for help to find a safe way through. Prepare: Find out whether you are in – or will be travelling through – a bushland area and what today’s Fire Danger Rating is. Stay alert and informed. Act: Remain vigilant of your surroundings, and follow any advice or directions provided by emergency services personnel or via an emergency broadcast on local radio. Let someone know your plans and how to contact you. Survive: Radiant heat can kill. To protect yourself, you need to cover up, dress appropriately and take refuge. Cover all exposed skin in natural fibres (e.g. wool, cotton)

to protect yourself from radiant heat. Radiant heat cannot penetrate solid objects, which means your best (but not guaranteed) protection is in a well-prepared house or structure.

Where to go on high fire danger days

Leaving a bushland area early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option for your survival.

STAY ALERT AND INFORMED • Check Total Fire Ban information and Fire Danger Ratings at fire.tas.gov.au or on the TFS Twitter and Facebook pages. • Listen to ABC local radio to hear bushfire warnings. • Check with an accredited visitor information centre. • Use your own senses: What’s the weather look like? Can you smell smoke? You may not get an official warning. • Do not rely on electronic mapping devices like GPS or mobile phones as they may be affected by smoke and local conditions, or reception gaps in remote areas. Keep a hard copy of a local map. fire.tas.gov.au | alert.tas.gov.au

ANOTHER ICONIC BRAND FOR TASMANIA

With the construction of their new service station in Kingston almost complete, United Petroleum has joined with another iconic national brand.

U

nited Petroleum is bringing another iconic Australian-owned brand to Tasmania with the introduction of the state’s first Pie Face restaurant into its new Kingston service station. Construction of the new multimillion-dollar service station is nearing completion, with the new site set to officially open on the Channel Highway, next to Bunnings, in early December. The new site will also include a 24-hour Quick Stop convenience store, new refuelling canopy and pumps with all grades of fuel and clean and comfortable amenities. RACT members will continue to receive their 6 cents per litre discount off fuel. ‘United has been in discussions with RACT about the regions that were under-represented by the ever expanding United retail network,’ said Andrew English, United Petroleum’s National Marketing Manager. ‘Kingston was at the top of the list of areas where RACT members didn’t have easy and direct access to a United site and this along with the recent residential growth and the scarcity of service stations made Kingston a prime target for the next United development. ‘The new site is currently the last service station outbound of Kingston

and will service large volumes of commuter traffic from Hobart.’ Pie Face was launched in Australia in 2003 and has rapidly grown since then, with franchises across the country and then expanding internationally to six other countries. ‘We see close connections between Pie Face’s Australian story and our own – both being locally owned and operated companies, with a commitment to providing quality products to local consumers,’ Andrew said. ‘United Petroleum was established in 1993 with the opening of a chain of service stations/convenience stores in South Australia. We expanded operations into Victoria, and then over the next few years around the country. ‘We vertically integrated in the mid 2000s via the acquisition of fuel import terminals in Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Tasmania. This has allowed us to increase supply-chain security and provides pricing and negotiating benefits, giving us the ability to compete aggressively with major competitors. ‘Our new Pie Face store in Kingston will further enhance the United offer and ensure that our customers enjoy an even better experience with ultimate convenience.’

A FORCE OF HUMAN NATURE

S

ince joining the inaugural Big Bash League in 2011, the Hobart Hurricanes have become a powerhouse in the national Twenty20 competition, with the men’s team just missing a berth in last year’s finals and the women rapidly climbing up the ranks since the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) launched two seasons ago. However, it is off the field that the Hurricanes can make the most significant difference to the Tasmanian community. Under the guidance of new general manager Phil Rigby, who joined the Hurricanes earlier this year from Brisbane Heat, the organisation has brought renewed focus and energy to its community programs. They have launched the Hurricanes Foundation, which is designed to support Tasmanians through education and funding as well as elite programs for up-and-coming young cricketers. One of the most compelling activities is their Breakfast Club, which is an opportunity for the Hurricanes to give back to schools. ‘A lot of schools already have breakfast clubs to provide students with an opportunity to make a great start to the day,’ Phil said.

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

‘We want to support this by providing all of the provisions and manning the breakfast stall,as well as conducting activities to promote physical activity in schools.’ A recent visit to John Paul II Primary School in Clarendon Vale showed how valuable these programs can be. Students heartily tucked in to the breakfast, but it was the appearance of Captain Hurricane that proved most popular – even if he did cop quite a beating in the ‘run the gauntlet’ activity. ‘The Hurricanes are fantastic role models for our children,’ assistant principal Jo Clark said. ‘They thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast provided and were excited and enthused to participate in the planned activities with Captain Hurricane. The Hurricanes kept them all moving and involved.’ To build the cricket stars of the future, the Foundation also has an elite program that provides grants and scholarship programs for young Tasmanians. To date, two up-and-coming stars have been named from the Northern BBL and WBBL Rookie Program – Jarrod Freeman from Mowbray Cricket Club, and Emma Mannix-Geeves from Riverside Cricket Club.

A GUIDE TO THE GAME DATES

ABOVE FROM LEFT: Hobart Hurricanes host breakfast at St John Paul II Catholic Primary School in Clarendon Vale; Captain Hurricane gets active with the students; and survives the ‘run the gauntlet’.

‘The Hurricanes are fantastic role models for our children.’ ‘The Northern Rookie Program is another opportunity for player from the North and North West of the state to interact and engage with our high performance pathways, providing tangible opportunities to further their cricketing careers without the burden of relocating,’ Phil said. Since launching in October, the Foundation has made donations to 15 cricket clubs, charities and community groups locally, as well as supporting teams in South Africa, the home country of new Hurricanes coach Gary Kirsten. ‘Instead of donating money, we focus on supporting cricket clubs, charities and community groups through providing gear and funds to purchase items such as barbecues to give the clubs more longevity in their fundraising goals,’ Phil said.

‘Our aim is to make these organisations more self-sufficient so they can continue to nurture our young Tasmanians.’ On the field, both the men’s and women’s teams are gearing up for a huge season that kicks off on 9 December, with the first home game being on 17 December at Blundstone Arena in Hobart. ‘Last season we sold out three of our four home matches, with close to 70,000 members and fans attending games throughout the season,’ Phil said. ‘This season, with the launch of our first home match in Launceston, we are looking to get more than 90,000 people through the gates. ‘What we provide is far more than just a game of cricket – it is an entertaining night out for the entire family.’ Hurricanes fans can rub shoulders with the players at the Fan Day on 17 December before the club’s first home game of the season – the WBBL clash with Sydney Sixers, which starts at 2pm.

THE DEVIL YOU DON’T KNOW

V

isitors to TMAG this summer will be able to gain a fresh perspective on Australia’s largest marsupial carnivore, the Tasmanian devil, at the new The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil exhibition. Often viewed as a vicious predator with few redeeming features and a threat to agriculture, the devil’s image has recently been transformed through publicity surrounding the devastating Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease. But rather than just a cartoonish menace or the victim of an incurable cancer, the devil is portrayed in this exhibition as a remarkable survivor – a species that (so far) is beating the odds.

A Tasmanian devil at Bonorong Wildlife Park, near Hobart, 2017. Collection: Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil shows that the devil is a unique species, integral to Tasmania’s ecological and cultural landscape. Through exploring aspects of devil biology, ecology and behaviour, visitors will be able to learn why the devil has endured when Tasmania’s other large predator, the thylacine, succumbed within 150 years of European arrival.

Visitors will be able to learn more about devil behaviour and explore cutting-edge science through a range of interactive experiences, as well as view Tasmanian artists’ responses to this misunderstood creature. The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil, TMAG 8 December 2017 – 6 May 2018 tmag.tas.gov.au

SMOOTH SAILING

A

s the building of the new vessel for Gordon River Cruises on the state’s west coast continues to progress, we can now reveal an exciting world-first for the company. ‘The vessel will be fitted with both diesel and electric engines, meaning that we can switch between one or the other or both, depending on the location of the vessel at the time and the prevailing weather conditions,’ RACT Group Chief Executive Harvey Lennon said. ‘This will reduce fuel consumption and our impact on the environment. ‘In addition, and perhaps the most exciting, when we enter the Gordon River we will switch the diesel engines off, leaving only the electric drive. This will mean guests on-board will enjoy a unique cruising experience completely in keeping with the values of this remarkable place.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

An artist’s impression of the new Gordon River Cruises vessel.

‘We believe this is a world-first for a commercial passenger vessel of its kind and are pleased to be able to bring this experience to members, other Tasmanians and visitors to our island state.’ Toby Richardson, co-director of Richardson Devine Marine (RDM), said the building of the new vessel set a new benchmark for the company.

‘This a landmark opportunity for RDM to be the first builder in the world to produce a commercial hybrid drive vessel of this size,’ he said. ‘The main engines can be shut down and the vessel quietly propelled with electric motors driving the propellers, offering a level of serenity otherwise unknown on a commercial cruise vessel of this size.’

THE NEW VESSEL IS DUE TO LAUNCH IN APRIL 2018. FOR MORE DETAILS AND TO WATCH THE VIDEO VISIT GORDONRIVERCRUISES.COM.AU/2018.

We will be seeking a new name to reflect the new vessel, as well as the passion and personalities of the west coast and Gordon River, whose stories will be told during the cruise.

To vote for your favourite visit gordonrivercruises.com.au/newvesselname and you could win a trip for two on the inaugural sailing.

YOUR VIEWS Rebuilding a bridge

I found your article ‘Rebuilding a bridge’ (Oct/Nov 2017 Journeys) interesting. However, if the really commonsense Derwent Ferry suggestion to ease rush-hour traffic could be expedited rather than chewed over forever, it would have an immediate effect on a reduction of vehicles using other roads and the Tasman Bridge, less wear and tear on it and reduced pollution. Building more roads isn’t the answer. Come on planners, let’s get it happening – a ferry is the best solution. Andy Cooke, Sorell

As an Eastern Shore resident the article ‘Rebuilding a bridge’ (Oct/Nov 2017 Journeys) brought a wry smile to my face. My home location mandates that the Tasman Bridge is the key piece of road infrastructure for me and many others. The article’s alarming statistic was that there is a 96% chance of the bridge falling or being knocked down in the next 40-50 years. That is more likely than anthropogenic climate change! So what is the government doing to mitigate this risk? Well, a long time ago they built the excellent Bowen Bridge – good thinking. Then they started widening the East Derwent Highway to four lanes but then this was never finished, leaving critical sections at both Gielston Bay and Risdon Cove dual-lane. Why was this prudent safety net never completed? If the mooted Flagstaff Gully link was also constructed, the combined improved

road/s would not only be a fail-safe for Tasman Bridge but also a viable alternative to provide more efficient access from northern Hobart to the rapidly developing Eastern Shore and south-eastern Tasmania. Evan Evans, Lindisfarne

Walk this way

I frequently walk my dog at the Brickfields in Launceston. He is, of course, interested in every tree there! I have often been frightened by cyclists taking a short-cut through the park, coming up behind me and racing past. As you will gather, we do not walk in a straight line and I am afraid of one or both of us being knocked down. I understand that it is law that cyclists must have a bell on their machines, but if the cyclists I have come across know about this law they certainly have never sounded the bell when approaching me and my dog. Cyclists have at last got some action on their long campaign for consideration from motorists, so I would like pedestrians to have the same courtesy from riders, please. Gail Wells, Launceston

A senseless killing

The article by Grace Heathcote of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary ‘Roadkill Capital of the World’ (Oct/Nov 2017 Journeys) is extremely distressing and should be totally unnecessary. What is being done to educate visiting road users about this subject? Visitors could be handed pamphlets when they arrive. Perhaps the rules of

the road should also be included as these differ from state to state and country to country. One of the simplest and cheapest means of protecting our animals is the use of whistles on vehicles. For some years we have had them fitted on our cars and while still seeing animals, we have never hit one. The whistles are not audible to the human ear, are cheap and easy to install. Perhaps the Government could come up with the initiative of providing these devices to visitors, hire car operators and local drivers with the help of the TT-Line. RACT and Bonorong could also come on board maybe as sponsors or distributors along with any other interested bodies. Better still, if you live in Tassie, install them yourself. They are available at auto supply shops. They do work! Angela Prosser-Green, Norwood

We are also speaking with other organisations regarding a roadkill prevention app. Keep an eye out in the next issue of Journeys for more details. Paula Sward, Editor

Road test HYUNDAI i30

DARREN MOODY

I regularly get asked ‘what is the best vehicle for me’ by family, friends and RACT members. There’s only a handful of cars across a few categories that I don’t use ‘except for’ or ‘but’, in my response. The previous i30, which won the small car Category of Australia’s Best Cars six times, was one of those on the short list that I’d always say ‘buy it’. So when you replace something with that sort of reputation you better make sure you do a good job of it.

R

eleased earlier this year, the latest generation i30 is pretty well an all-new model with just a little bit of carry-over on some of the drivetrains. The shell is significantly stiffer and stronger, creating a great platform to ensure ride quality and handling are first-rate. Exterior styling is definitely European, with a longer, lower overall look and elements of individual style, particularly in the SR spec that I’m testing. The entry-level Active is available with a 2.0L petrol or 1.6 turbo diesel in manual or auto; mid-spec is Elite; with Premium topping out the standard range. Both these models offer only the 1.6L turbo-diesel engine. Sporting variants, the SR and SR Premium, get a 1.6L turbo petrol mated to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. I’d been restricted to short commutes for the first part of the week, but a planned trip to Cradle 28

Journeys

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

Mountain would work in perfectly to really get to know the SR. Of course it wouldn’t be the A1 highway trudge for me, I’d head inland towards Bothwell, skirt Great Lake, head over the top and down into Deloraine, through Mole Creek then on to Cradle. The SR was well-mannered, with a comfortable ride on the first highway section. Overtaking was achieved with a minimum of fuss and the highway economy was showing less than 7L/100km. I acquainted myself with the interior on this section. The centre touchscreen sits proud of the dashboard (I call it the iPad generation as many manufacturers are now doing similar things), it has good resolution along with positive touch interaction. Connectivity is easy with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both supported. Overall ergonomics are well-sorted with clear ‘zones’ for each interaction. Dual climate-control and standard leather-appointed seats are comfortable, but lack a little support

on the base for sports seats. There are hints of red right across the interior with seat stitching, air-vent surrounds and red seat belts – so if you don’t like that colour, look somewhere else. The Lake Highway provides a perfect mixture of roads to test any car – low and higher-speed corners, steep climbs and descents, mixed road surfaces and, at the time of year I was travelling, little traffic. Unlike my previous trip, the roads this time were dry and the sun was shining, but there was plenty of evidence of recent snow in the highlands with piles of snow in shaded areas at the road’s edge. A perfect road with perfect conditions to test the SR. Most Hyundais sold in Australia get the once-over from an Australianbased suspension engineering team, who again plied their trade across the i30 range. It definitely shows on the SR, which delivers an outstanding ride and direct steering control that on some questionable road surfaces didn’t

LIFE ON THE MOVE

‘Some quality one-on-one time with the latest i30 has done nothing to shake my faith in the brand.’ at any time put a foot wrong. Not at any stage did it crash through potholes or get unsettled on corrugations. Unlike the run-of-the-mill i30, SR gets multi-link independent rear suspension that no doubt helped refine the handling. When really pressed you could induce some understeer, but 225-section Hankook tyres on 18” alloys held on beyond expectation. On the climbing sections the smallcapacity turbo engine didn’t shy away from the job. At 150kW and 265Nm it doesn’t match hot-hatch output, but wouldn’t be totally humiliated in more expensive company. Its best work is done below 5500rpm – above that it becomes a bit breathless, but is happy to rev to the limiter if that is your want. As I headed down the switchback section towards Golden Valley I gave the brakes a good workout. They are a little bigger than standard on the SR and stood up well under a number of extremely hard braking applications.

All models provide a five-star 2017 ANCAP rating, but not all variants get the full suite of safety features. In terms of the SR manual I drove, it missed out on AEB, forward collision warning, active cruise control and lane-keep assist. These features are limited to Elite, Premium and auto SR variants. However, my ride wasn’t totally bereft of extra features, with blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert all included, along with a suite of airbags, stability and traction control. I arrived in Cradle in good time and was probably quicker than heading up the highway with the roadworks currently going on. Economy had moved closer to 10L/100km, but I wasn’t trying to drive economically. I stepped out of the driver’s seat with

no ill-effects of a long drive, so seating comfort also passed the test. Some quality one-on-one time with the latest i30 has done nothing to shake my faith in the brand. In fact I’m reassured that the next time I get asked for a recommendation, I can confidently continue to direct people to a Hyundai dealership. The latest i30 is a quantum leap beyond the previous model, and there’s little doubt it’s aimed as a more premium vehicle with more standard equipment than ever before. Moderate price increases and a limited range in terms of Elite and Premium spec vehicles at this stage will limit some buyers. However, the SR on test, at a touch over $29,000 drive away, offers plenty in terms of style, equipment and driver enjoyment.

First drives PEUGEOT 3008 ALICE AGNEW

I

t’s not every day that an SUV is awarded European Car of the Year. In fact, it has never happened before – until this year. Peugeot captured the hearts of many back home with the recent release of the 3008, but will it be received as openly on Australian soil, where most associate the French brand with their smaller vehicles? Launched amongst the rolling hills of the Hunter Valley, Peugeot released the second generation medium-sized SUV, which is faced with the daunting task of breaking into what is already a highly saturated and popular market. Unlike its bulky predecessor, the all-new 3008 flaunted elegant exterior lines and a stately presence. Chrome accents highlighted flowing subtle curves, while impressive detailed grille patterning and slanted cat-like LED headlights framed the front. Inside, style and finesse filled the interior space, with design that is uncomplicated and refined. Quality soft-touch finishes and contemporary fabric choices in the entry level were a particular favourite that provided a luxury feel not usually associated with this price bracket. The cutting-edge styling of the dashboard design and lighting gives it an almost futuristic feel that defines the 3008 as a cut above the rest. Add to this an 8” touchscreen, 3D navigation, smartphone connectivity and uncluttered cabin control functions as standard and I’m only just getting started.

LIFE ON THE MOVE

Behind the wheel, the 3008 offers a secure and comfortable ride with cocoon-like seats (best-suited to the smaller-framed), with a flat-edged, slightly-smaller-than-standard steering wheel that took a bit of getting used to. Ample manual seat adjustments exist and there is generous room in the boot and front, while back-seat riders can expect slightly less leg room. Those in the front are also separated, with a wide box-like centre console area with storage compartments similar to that of a small pantry. The 3008 comes in four variants – the Active, Allure, GT-line and GT. Despite being an SUV, all models are front-wheel drive only and all come equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. Two engine types are available: a 1.6L turbo petrol or a 2.0L turbo diesel (found only in the GT variant). If fuel efficiency is high on your priority list then the diesel engine is definitely worth considering, offering a very efficient combined average of 4.8L/100km, while its petrol counterpart is expected to deliver 7.0L/100km. On the open road, the 3008 felt at home and I did too. Travelling as driver or passenger was a pleasure and provided

that sought-after solid feeling inherent in European car design. It stuck to the road with assurance, holding through the corners with limited body roll. Inside the cabin, road noise was minimal on the bitumen. Its off-road capabilities include a traction grip system and descent assist control (in specced-up variants), which provided a seriously weighty amount of driver assistance if you’re after that sort of thing. Rounding out its driving experience is its recently awarded five-star ANCAP safety rating with lane departure warning, speed sign recognition and driver attention warning offered as standard. In the GT-line and above you get autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring and parking aid sensors and assist, to name a few. For those looking in the higher-end range, medium-sized SUV market, Peugeot might just have the point of difference you’re after. The Active is available for $39,990 drive away and topping out at $54,141 for the GT-line.

KING OF THE ROAD TIM COX

M

y logbook is filling up and I’m not far off taking the next step: having a crack at my Ps. It’s likely you did that so long ago you can barely remember what it was like, but for me, it’s an enormous step. I might be almost ready. I’ve only had RACT Driver Training’s Kat or my wife Barb in the instructor’s seat so far, but it won’t be too long before it’s just me with the Transport Tasmania assessor alongside. Hopefully not as stressed as I’ll certainly be. I’ve taken longer than I wanted to get to this stage but what I’ve learned is starting to bed down and will hopefully become – and remain – the basis of a solid set of skills. I urge you to make sure the L-plater in your family gets a keys2drive lesson with an accredited instructor. It’s free and will give you, the instructor, and the learner some assistance in structuring what you do, making it a better time for all. You can book these in through the RACT as well. When I achieve my Ps I suspect I’ll continue to indicate too early and also to frustrate the driver behind me when I don’t take opportunities to slip into traffic that others would. Apologies in advance for that. I’ll be doing everything I can to be a distraction-free zone.

I’m finding there’s more than enough going on without a soundtrack or the phone to divert my attention. The end of our journey together in these pages is just about the start of mine alone on the road. So thanks to you for reading and also for stopping me in cafes, supermarkets and on the street to ask how it’s going – you’re very kind and your unexpected support is truly encouraging. Especially if that’s you, behind me, waiting for me to slip into the traffic. Thanks, mainly, to Kat for taking the world’s oldest L-plater and gently teaching him about the ways of the road. You’ve been a gentle, solicitous and fun mentor and I’ll miss our times together in the little yellow Suzuki. Long-time Tasmanian media personality Tim Cox is learning to drive, with the help of RACT Driver Training, and has been writing about his experiences in Journeys for the past 12 months. Since starting this process, he has nominated as a candidate in the next state election. ‘This SUV adaptation of the popular i30 platform looks fantastic on first approach.’

First drives HYUNDAI KONA PAULA SWARD

H

yundai has made the leap into the small-size SUV market for the first time with its all-new Kona. This SUV adaptation of the popular i30 platform looks fantastic on first approach. With a range of bright exterior colours and contrasting black roof options, sleek nose and shortened rear, the Kona is less masculine and more sporty than I expected. Inside, the layout is comfortable, with everything in easy reach. Even in the Active base spec the trims are sleek and streamlined, with the added luxury of leather steering wheel and gear shift knob. Take it up a couple of notches and in the top-spec Highlander you get heated and cooled power adjustable leather seats in the front, heated steering wheel, head-up display and a handy wireless charging pad for your smartphone. While I’m on technology, all specs come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and a 7” multimedia display.

As with most models in the smallsize SUV market, rear passenger space is a bit squeezy, with rear seat space just 880mm. Boot space is decent for this class at 361L, and can be extended slightly by removing the rear cargo tray. There are three trim levels – Active, Elite and Highlander – each with two drivetrain options – a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with six-speed auto and front-wheel drive producing 110kW at 6200rpm and 180 Nm at 4500rpm; or a 1.6L turbocharged engine matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive, with a power output of 130kW at 5500rpm and 265Nm of torque starting at 1500rpm and sticking with it through to 4500rpm. Fuel consumption is quoted as 7.2L/100km for the 2.0L, and 6.7L/100km for the 1.6L. The 2.0L performed well on urban bitumen, although a little sluggish when accelerating, while the 1.6L came into its own on rural roads. Taking it on gravel was not an issue

for my more experienced motoring writer colleagues, but the on-demand AWD was a little slow to kick in for my liking. In the safety stakes you can add a Safety Pack to the base spec Active, which brings in Hyundai’s SmartSense technology, including blind spot and rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning and avoidance assist and driver attention warning. In my mind it’s well worth the $1500 added to the purchase price. While I’m on costs, the Kona also comes with a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with the first five services capped, at a total of $1395 for the 2.0L engine and $1405 for the turbocharged option. Priced from $27,000 drive away, the new Kona is a neat little addition to the Hyundai range. FOR THE FULL REVIEW VISIT RACT.COM.AU/HYUNDAI-KONA

Luxury camping around Tasmania Glamping is a buzzword that has sprung up in recent years, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is just another expensive holiday. GLAMP SANDRIDGE PAULA SWARD

S

et high on a hill, surrounded by natural bushland and with a view across to the waters of Bass Strait, sits a shed. And some tents. Well, that’s what the owners would have you believe. But don’t let their down-to-earth approach to the business of glamping fool you – this place is anything but basic. Glamp Sandridge is an extension of the Sandridge Estate wedding destination in the forests above the spectacular coastline of Boat Harbour and Sisters Beach in the state’s northwest. The brainchild of sisters Rebecca Brammall and Samantha Burr, who grew up in the area, the property was formerly a silica sand quarry that has been lovingly created into a luxe experience, with none of the pretension. Extending the family vibe, Bec and Sam’s parents, Maureen and Roger, greet us when we arrive. They are as

much a part of this business as their daughters. Roger has completed a lot of the work himself, from locating and restoring the doors of the old Devonport Town Hall at the entrance of the shed to installing small wood fires in the bell tents. ‘Make yourselves at home’, we are told. We don’t have to be told twice. Our ‘home’ for two nights is the enormous 6m Bridezilla tent, with our two sons safely installed in a slightly smaller (but no less luxurious) 5m tent across the way. This is a far cry from where we started our family camping tradition two years ago, squished into a two-man tent that had us rather frazzled by the end of it! Bridezilla lives up to her name, with a king-size bed complete with electric blankets and a small wood fire to keep us toasty and warm, a private deck overlooking the view and a bath…

yes, a bath! While I didn’t get a chance to give it a spin during our stay, I’m definitely going back. The eight on-site tents are all suitably spaced apart to give us privacy while still being able to hear our little ‘cherubs’ when they woke – which they didn’t until the very respectable hour of 6.30am. Considering the spring weather brought a downpour of epic proportions that sounded like we were sleeping under a waterfall from within the cosy surroundings of our tent, I was very surprised. The beauty of a storm like that is that it clears the air and we woke to a bright blue day, an easy breakfast prepared in the well-decked-out camp kitchen and a world of beautiful beaches, national parks and scenic landmarks on our doorstep. sandridgeestate.com.au

While you’re in the area… BEACHES There are two stunning beaches within five minutes’ drive of Glamp Sandridge – Boat Harbour and Sisters Beach. Boat Harbour is definitely my favourite, with its white sand and turquoise waters and sheltered by the hills behind.

WALKS Rocky Cape National Park offers visitors a wide variety of coastal experiences, from small sheltered beaches to banskia-dotted hillsides with sweeping views out over Bass Strait. The park offers a fascinating variety of walks,

ranging from less than 20 minutes to a full day. These take in Aboriginal rock shelters and caves, scenic hills full of wildflowers and birds, and tranquil beaches, bays and rocky headlands.

Low Head at the mouth of the Tamar River. From the lookout you can also enjoy a 30-minute return walk to the Table Cape Lighthouse, where you can take a tour to the top.

SCENERY

Just under 45 minutes west of Boat Harbour is the picturesque waterside village of Stanley. Most famous for its landmark The Nut, this a sheer-sided bluff – all that remains of an ancient volcanic plug. A walking track climbs to the summit of The Nut, or you can take the chairlift, with its spectacular views across Bass Strait beaches and over the town.

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from Glamp Sandridge is the spectacular landmark of Table Cape, aptly named after its outline against the blue sky and sparkling waters of Bass Strait. You can take a drive through the farmland to the lookout, where on a clear day you can see as far east as

hen I think glamour, I think of feeling special, of indulgence, luxe surroundings and, ultimately, something very unique. It is difficult to achieve all this when you’re talking canvas tents and barbecues, but the owners of Wingtons Glamping have hit it on the head. The unassuming entry to this boutique glamping experience belies what is located below, and yet it was the catalyst for this ‘sea-change’ experience for owners Nathaniel Wicks and Graham Kington. Sick of the bright lights of Melbourne, they relocated to the historic Westwynd Cottage at Clarence Point near the mouth of the Tamar River in the state’s north. First purchased in the late 1930s by Nat’s great grandparents, Thomas and Eileen Perkins, it has been in his family for four generations. After lovingly restoring the cottage to its former glory, Nat and Graham set about bringing their dream to fruition – and what a dream it is. Set on the banks of the river amid natural bushland, the three accommodation sites are more than just tents. They feature queen-size beds with Egyptian linen, antique steamer trunks that cleverly and conveniently conceal an ice

Everything the modern traveller could want is also catered for, including electric lighting and USB charging hub and bluetooth speakers. My favourite, though, was the miniprojector with a selection of movies, which you could screen on the wall of your tent as you lay back on the bed in comfort. With the entire Tamar Valley Wine Route and a wide range of local producers on your doorstep, you’re able to gather enough supplies on the drive to keep you sustained for days – if you’re lucky enough to have the time! wingtons.com

There’s also a fantastic school holiday program where children can feed the seahorses and (small!) sharks, as well as dive their hands into the touch pool full of seahorses, hermit crabs and starfish.

he palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) people are the only group of humans to evolve in isolation for more than 10,000 years. As a result, their culture and heritage is distinctively different from mainland Aboriginal cultures. The new wukalina Walk will deliver an experience that deepens understanding of palawa culture and community, while showcasing the natural beauty of the wukalina and larapuna/Bay of Fires areas. Contemporary palawa culture is most strongly tied to this part of Tasmania, which incorporates the Furneaux Islands. The wukalina Walk is a project of the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (a Tasmanian Statutory Authority), and is the first of its kind in Australia, being designed, owned and operated by the Aboriginal community. guided walk will incorporate coastal and inland aspects of the famous Bay of Fires region – the cultural homeland of the palawa. Up to 10 guests and two guides will spend two nights in bespoke palawa inspired (domed) huts, within a standing camp in the national park, and one night in a meticulously renovated lighthouse keepers cottage on Aboriginal-held land at larapuna/ Eddystone Point. While walking in the footsteps of their traditional people, the palawa guides and Elders will relate firsthand the palawa creation story, and guests will participate in cultural practices that have been passed down for hundreds of generations. BAY OF FIRES BUSH RETREAT PAULA SWARD

f there’s one thing Tasmanians are known for, it’s their ingenuity. For generations, men and women have carved out a living for themselves using their skills and the materials around them. With so much technology at our fingertips, it’s refreshing to see young Tasmanian couple Tom Dicker and Anna Hoffmann creating their own world, which they are more than happy to share with others. Bay of Fires Bush Retreat has only been open for 12 months, and yet it feels like it’s been around a lot longer. Tom and Anna’s relaxed approach to living can be felt from the moment you drive in and are met by their black dog, Bo. Their home is set above the site, allowing them to provide the ultimate in service for their guests while also giving them their own privacy. Tom has constructed a lot of the property’s amenities himself. The communal dining and kitchen area

has been expertly crafted on-site with spacious areas for cooking, eating and lounging by the fire, as well as cleverly designed steel doors that can be opened to let in the fresh air and sunshine, or closed against the elements. Accommodation is varied, from a group of bell tents decked out with king-size beds, luxury linens and little touches such as marshmallows to toast by the fire; to a bunkhouse that sleeps six and The King Room, which is a private room with a king-size bed that is close to the kitchen and bathroom facilities. A trained chef, Tom is busily preparing dinner when we arrive. The perfectly cooked Cape Grim rib eye with roast potatoes and greens is served on shared platters, where you can choose to share your dinner table with other guests, or enjoy some time alone.

While I was initially reluctant to sacrifice some of our precious child-free time and join the group, we were quickly caught up in the relaxed atmosphere and enjoyed the company of new friends. I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxed I felt almost instantly – the beautiful surroundings, excellent set-up and Tom and Anna’s friendly approach definitely set me at ease. bayoffiresbushretreat.com.au DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

BRUNY ISLAND LONG WEEKEND BEV MALZARD travelgaltravels.blog

C

amping? No. I’ve been there, done that and the thought of the cold ground seeping up through my bones, cutting through a wafer-thin foam mattress and a sleeping bag strangling me is about as attractive a proposition as being kept awake by the flapping of a nylon tent in a gale-force wind. But here I am, snuggled in a kingsize bed, with crisp white linens crackling around my face, darkness folding itself across the entrance of the large tent and smiling to myself, remembering that I was never going camping again. But, glamping, yes! How civilised, how wonderful and how about this location? Bruny Island is actually two islands, North and South, connected by a narrow strip of land called The Neck, which is easier to say than isthmus. After arriving by boat from Hobart our bags are stashed and we waste no time before we begin to walk. Along the way we see no other human beings. Our hosts/guides/protectors are Robert Knight and Dave Lane, who guide us gently through the sea-level scrub before we start to rise higher where the scraggly, tough native trees are either gathered tightly together or are out on a limb leaning to the north. When the wind she blows . . . she blows. 42

‘We walked and talked and learned so much about the nature of the island, the history and how to have a luxury experience without the four walls of a hotel.’ Tasmanian-born Robert started this experience four years ago after recognising a need to give visitors a deeper experience of Bruny Island beyond the usual day visit. Guide and expert chef Dave is also a passionate Taswegian, immersing himself in the area after retiring from an exemplary career as a chemical engineer working across the globe. I haven’t done a lot of bushwalking in the past few years but realised how much I like it. Pushing the legs a little harder than usual, breathing in the crisp scented air is invigorating. The max number of guests on any given Long Weekend is eight, and we are seven which makes getting to know each other easy and companionable. Our walk takes about five hours with a packed picnic lunch stop, a visit off-the-beaten-track to an old hut that had been built years before – a kind of men’s shed in the wilderness,

a trek to the farthest cape and a walk along a splendid, deserted beach with a smattering of rocks that boast of geological marvels and weathered history. We are on our way to our camp but stop first to gaze at the smooth water of Great Bay to see how the famous Bruny Island oysters are farmed. A clutch of gnarly shells are brought out from the waters, shucked and eaten, au naturel with great gusto. Now that’s how you finish a bushwalk! Nestled in a clearing amid an oldgrowth forest is our accommodation for the next two nights. The roomy tents (with big beds) are camouflaged in the bush and are a decent distance from each other. Down the hill is the outdoor shower. Standing under pounding hot water and staring out at sentinel stands of eucalypts is a pretty special experience. Then the big surprise unfolds. The hut where we eat our meals sits alone and as

I wander down for pre-dinner drinks a fine film of smoke wafts into the air. Ah, dinner is cooking! We sit in the fading afternoon light chatting while Dave and Robert work like a well-oiled team cooking our dinner of roast lamb, vegetables, hot rolls, and a sweetheart of a dessert. Into bed afterwards and I am asleep before I hit the pillow. The next day the rest of the gang went on another bushwalk to East Cloudy Head to stretch the legs and for a view of the wild Southern Ocean.

I opted for sightseeing. The landscape is gentle and dotted with little farms, old and new. Decrepit houses and shacks make for good photography and by chance we saw the famed white wallaby make a brief appearance in the bush as we drove past. The highlight of the day was to visit and climb the stunning Cape Bruny Lighthouse. First lit in 1838, the lighthouse is an example of the best lighthouse architecture of its time. We stopped later at The Neck for a

lazy lunch and I returned to camp early and bagged the first shower. Another evening of good company, gourmet food (local pork and vegetables), fine Tassie wines and late-night laughs. This ‘glamping’ business suits me. We walked and talked and learned so much about the nature of the island, the history and how to have a luxury experience without the four walls of a hotel. Bev Malzard enjoyed the hospitality of The Bruny Island Long Weekend (and heartily recommends it). brunyislandlongweekend.com.au

Prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan

ENSURE YOU’RE

PREPARED

Leaving early is always the safest option when a bushfire threatens your home.

Block your downpipes with a sock full of soil/ sand, then fill the gutters with water.

FOR A BUSHFIRE WITH RACT HOME INSURANCE

This summer we are working with the Tasmanian Fire Service to ensure you are prepared in the event of bushfires. For more information about preparing your home and protecting your family visit fire.tas.gov.au or free call 1800 000 699

Prune lower branches on trees and remove flammable shrubs from under and between trees.

In branch | ract.com.au | 13 27 22 |

Remove flammable items from the exterior of the house e.g. blinds, outdoor furniture, door mats.

Keep gutters clean to prevent stray embers catching.

Ensure your insurance policy is up to date on 13 27 22

Consider alternative water sources such as a nearby pond or dam, creek, swimming pool or water tank. The Tasmania Fire Service estimates that if you are relying on one of these alternative water supplies, in the most intense bushfires you may need up to 10,000 litres, or 2500 gallons, of water to defend your home.

Don’t stand on the roof with a hose. In bushfires, often more people are injured falling from roofs than from burns.

Check the daily Fire Danger Rating (FDR) forecast at fire.tas.gov.au

Listen to ABC Radio for news of the bushfire (use a transistor or car radio if the power is off).

Move any piles of wood or rubbish well away from the house.

A PRETTY PENNY PAULA SWARD

I

vaguely recall attending Penny Royal as a child in the 1980s, with the firing of cannons off a replica brig and a lot of shouting about things I didn’t really understand (namely our colonial history). I recall it was dark (although that could have been the weather), crowded and a little bit scary. The site was founded by well-known Tasmanian developer Roger Smith, who had found a pile of convict bricks on a property at Barton, in Tasmania’s midlands. The bricks were once buildings owned by Andrew Gatenby and his family, early pioneers of Van Diemen’s Land. They arrived in 1823 and settled on land between Cressy and Ross on the Isis River, then known as Penny Royal Creek. They built their farmhouse and mill house there and made a life on the land. However, during the subsequent years the mill fell into disrepair. When Roger found the bricks, he bought them off the current landowner with the plan of rebuilding the mill and creating a tourist attraction. The site was chosen near the mouth of Launceston’s most visited attraction at the time – the Cataract Gorge. Penny Royal opened in December 1979. At its peak in 1980-81, the site received a record 4666 visitors in one day. However, it slowly lost popularity and in the early 2000s

it was shut down for more than eight years. Enter another well-known Tasmanian developer, Josef Chromy, whose JAC Group purchased the site in 2014 and announced plans for a new development. Officially opened in 2016, Penny Royal Adventures is a bright and open space that has something for everyone – food, wine and beer for the adults; rock climbing and zip-lining for the teenagers; and a cliff-top walk, remote-controlled boats and a spooky ride through history for the kids. And there is still the Brig Tamar, making its circuit of the man-made lake, firing cannons and telling tales of our colonial history, including that of bushranger Matthew Brady. As I sat in the bright sunshine, enjoying an expertly made woodfired pizza, I thought about how different a place can feel through the passage of time, age and the deft touch of an experienced tourism developer. While Roger Smith hit the nail on the head for the tourism market of the late 70s early 80s, Josef Chromy’s new-look world is definitely something for all to see. INGREDIENTS:

100g fresh Tasmanian scallops Celeriac puree 200g celeriac 50g potato ½ onion 20g butter

150ml chicken stock 50ml cream Salt Pepper

Charred leaks 2 x 2cm slices of leek (white part) 10ml olive oil Coffee gel 1 shot of espresso Enough xantham gum to thicken to gel

How to cook the perfect steak

Pickled celeriac 2 x thin slices of celeriac Small amount of vinegar Sugar Pickling spices

With Michael Krueger, executive head chef, Cradle Mountain Hotel

METHOD:

I

t all starts with the right meat and the right cut of the beef. At Cradle Mountain Hotel we use our local Mt Roland Range Beef, which is just in front of our doorstep and has a good quality in tenderness, fat and taste. My personal favorite cut is the porterhouse it has a nice texture, a good amount of fat and doesn’t lose the shape during the cooking process. I would always leave the fat on top of the steak on, instead of trimming it down, as it gives you juiciness and taste. I would use a 2cm thick slice, which will be around 300-350g. It is important that the steak has the same thickness everywhere, otherwise it doesn’t cook evenly. For seasoning I would just go for salt, cracked pepper and a tiny bit of oil (no olive oil) and nothing else.

My preference for cooking a steak is on a charcoal grill but a gas BBQ or a nice hot pan does the job. It is important that the surface where you put the steak on is hot – let’s say around 210-250C. That helps to close the pore of the meat so no juice can run out and you also get a nice char flavour. Leave it on one side for about two minutes then turn it to the other side for another two minutes and repeat that process two times. Your steak will be now between medium-rare and medium, which for me is the best temperature for a porterhouse steak. Take it off the heat and let it rest for about one minute so the meat juice can settle down and it’s not running out when you cut it. As a side for the steak I like fresh grilled or cooked vegies, some crushed potatoes with caramelised onions and a nice red wine jus.

Slice celeriac very fine with mandolin. Mix vinegar sugar and pickling spices until happy with flavour. Place sliced celeriac in solution for at least two hours. Clean scallops and remove side muscle and lightly season. Place leek slices in sou vide bag with olive oil seal and sou vide until tender. Thicken espresso with xanthan gum by making a paste with a small amount of both and adding to espresso. Peel and roughly dice celeriac, potato and onion. Lightly sauté in butter without any colour in small saucepan. Cover with chicken stock and simmer until very soft. Place in food processor and puree until very fine. Add a small amount of cream, salt and pepper (do not add all liquid from saucepan, only add until right consistency). To serve: Char leaks on griddle pan. Spoon celeriac puree onto plate. In a hot thick-bottomed pan quickly sear scallops. Position on plate with pickled celeriac charred leek and gel. You can use a very small amount of ground coffee to garnish and add celery tops. iscover the beauty of the Murray River and secrets of Australian history on Captain Cook Cruises’ three, four and seven-night cruises aboard the modern romantic paddlewheeler, the PS Murray Princess. The historic cruise starts with the ship itself, the PS Murray Princess. Finished with polished wood and gold trimmings and featuring a winding staircase, full-length windows and a paddlewheel encased in glass, these features help replicate the paddlewheelers that first cruised the Murray in the 1800s. The Murray Princess cruises past towering limestone cliffs, through picturesque gorges and along riverbanks lined with mallee scrub, red gum forests and century-old stone causeways. The high water levels have seen a return of Australian wildlife and birdlife to the river in abundance. Swans, swamp hens, wood ducks and their young, dragonflies, and frogs have all returned and plant life is also thriving. THE PERFECT WAY TO SEE THE OUTBACK STEPHANIE JAY Travel Consultant – RACT Travel Kingston branch

‘The Ghan Expedition is truly a bucket list item and is the perfect way to see outback Australia in style with this fully inclusive journey.’

W

orking in travel, it’s hard to find things to add to your bucket list – we have so many wonderful opportunities to get out and explore the world. But there’s always something more to see, and one thing I’ve always wanted to do is the Ghan Expedition. I was lucky enough to experience this magnificent four-day, three-night journey from Darwin to Adelaide. I am glad that I have finally been able to experience Australia’s Greatest Train Journey. This journey is for everyone, from an adventurous single to couples who like to enjoy the finer things in life, and even families. I arrived in Darwin the day before the journey and hopped on a Sunset Dinner cruise. Sitting back, enjoying a drink and a delicious seafood buffet while watching the sunset over the ocean is the perfect way to begin your experience. This fully inclusive journey starts from your hotel in Darwin, where you will be transferred to the train station. On your arrival at the station you are met by the incredible staff that truly make this journey memorable. This is the perfect opportunity to get your iconic photo at the front of the red train. After taking your photo you are shown to your room where you can sit back and explore your cabin before the journey begins. I travelled in Gold Twin Service. During the day it was a couch that comfortably sat two people as we enjoyed our cups of tea watching the scenery go by, and at night while we were at dinner it turned into a lovely bedroom with bunk beds pulled down from the wall.

DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018

On this magnificent Expedition experience you get to discover Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy. With lots of sightseeing options for different levels of fitness or culture you will find the perfect day trip for you. Our first stop was Katherine. I decided to explore the Katherine Gorge for the afternoon, and was I glad I did. This Gorge is a photographer’s dream – it is hard to take a bad photo at this stunning place. Not only is the scenery amazing, you might even spot some local wildlife along the way. As you cruise along the river in the Gorge and take your photos, your local guide gives you information about the history of the Gorge and the art work. After this cruise you are transferred back to the station to begin the journey down to Alice Springs. During the evening, I enjoyed a drink in the Outback Explorer Lounge before my dinner at the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. If you enjoy amazing customer service where the staff learn your name and drink order on the first day, The Ghan journey is for you. The next morning you wake up pulling into Alice Springs, with more options to fill your day. You can even choose to upgrade and fly out to Uluru for the day. This evening you are transferred from the train to what I believe is one of the highlights of the trip, The Outback Pioneer Dinner under the stars. Rated as number one with the passengers, this dinner is not to be missed. The following day we arrive into Coober Pedy, the opal capital. This small town reminds you of the old-fashioned movies. With its stunning scenery above ground, underground is a different story. With temperatures in summer reaching

TRAVEL

50 degrees, lots of home owners build underground, and on the fantastic journey you have the option to experience this for yourself and see how the locals live. You can also discover the beautiful scenery of the Breakaways – make sure you have your camera charged as you don’t want to miss this photo opportunity. After a day exploring Coober Pedy it is back on the train for the last night to begin the journey to Adelaide. The food on and off the train is not only delicious, it is beautifully presented and served with a warm smile and a laugh. The staff on this journey are truly wonderful – they make you feel very welcome and

anything you ask is no trouble at all. The Ghan Expedition is truly a bucket list item and is the perfect way to see outback Australia in style with this fully inclusive journey. If you would like to know more about my experience or to book this journey for yourself, please visit me at Kingston or give me a call.

CRAZY, CHAOTIC AND EXCITING LINDA OSBORNE-MAGUIRE Travel Team Leader – RACT Travel Rosny branch

T

he streets of India are somewhat crazy and chaotic, yet still feel quite safe. There are so many different types of transport sharing the roads, travelling on what is marked as three lanes, but actually has five lanes of vehicles within that space, with the odd person driving in the wrong direction for that side of the road! Buses, trucks, tuktuks, horse-drawn carts, motorbikes, motor scooters, pushbikes and the occasional camel or elephant all share the roads, with the beeping of horns but nothing really in the way of road rage. Also sharing the streets of India is the sacred cow. They have right of way all the time. You just have to drive around them or wait until they have crossed the road in front of you. India is a fabulous destination to explore, and we visited some of the iconic landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, the red sandstone Agra fort, Amber fort, Mehrangarh fort and Hauz Khas, plus so much more. We flew with Air India, which was very roomy in economy class. On arrival our guide, Sorab, was there to meet us, helping those that needed to organise their mobile phones and money exchange. Travelling between cities was very comfortable, with

INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE

quality train and coach facilities provided. A highlight of the trip was our visit to Agra, home of the amazing Taj Mahal. On our arrival there, we visited the Agra fort and viewed the Taj Mahal from the gardens behind it. We had another early start the following day to ensure that we were at the Taj Mahal for sunrise. A truly memorable experience. We spent our last two nights in Delhi. Seeing Delhi in the daylight was an eye-opener. Right in the middle of the businesses and shops is Hauz Khas and Oriya temple, a beautiful green space with another historical building, and a lake in amongst the hustle and bustle of the city. A drive around the city of both New Delhi and Old Delhi showing off their grand Parliament house, the India gate, Humayun’s tomb and a few markets, was a great way to finish our tour of Rajasthan. Tempo Holidays know India very well and are the perfect company to travel with. Please feel free to contact me in our Rosny branch if you would like more information on India.
