Top 10 road trips

Stanley Marrawah

Boat Harbour Wynyard BURNIE

This time of year is perfect for exploring. We’ve put together our top 10 trips that can take a day, two, or even more. CHANNEL – BRUNY ISLAND – HUON The loop from Margate through the Channel to the Huon Valley is one of the prettiest coastal drives in Tasmania. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, including Snug Falls, Verona Sands, and the lookout over Eggs and Bacon Bay. Coming back up the western side of the peninsula, you can stop at Cygnet for a bite at a local café, blow out some cobwebs on a jet boat, or drop a line in on the Huon River. And if you’re headed that way, jump on the ferry to Bruny Island. With plenty of beaches, walks and loads of eateries, you could easily spend a day there.

ST MARYS TO LAUNCESTON VIA LOW HEAD AND GEORGE TOWN We know this is a long haul, and recommend you take more than a day to explore and experience everything along the way. Exploring the Bay of Fires can take a day just by itself, and then there’s the well-known mountain bike riding at Derby and golf at Bridport, the history of Low Head and loads of eateries along the way. We recommend on your way back to Launceston you cross the Batman Bridge and take a detour north to Beaconsfield – one of Tasmania’s most famous locations, where the gold mine stands eerily silent in the centre of town and you can explore its history and the modern-day battle against the elements of nature that threaten its future. 4  Journeys

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

SORELL TO BICHENO, EAST COAST The drive from Sorell to Orford can be a little boring, but it depends on the time of year. When driving through there at dawn on a frosty winter morning the landscape is transformed – more like the North Pole than the east coast. Take your time as you wind your way along the coast – not only to enjoy the white sandy beaches and views, but being careful as some areas of this drive can be tricky if you’ve not done them before. A visit to Freycinet National Park is a must – the pink granite of The Hazards Mountains is quite surreal, and makes for some spectacular photos.

DEVONPORT TO DELORAINE VIA CRADLE MOUNTAIN There are many ways to drive to Cradle Mountain, but our favourite is from Devonport through the small townships of Paloona and Wilmot, where you can be entertained by the roadside creativity of the residents on the Novelty Letterbox Trail. Cradle Mountain is home to spectacular vistas and walks short and long, and you can also see the remains of Waldheim Chalet, built in 1902 by Austrian Gustav Weindorfer. The drive down off the alpine plains back into farming country is equally as interesting, where you can visit The Village of Lower Crackpot (yes it’s called that – we kid you not), a town of murals and a town of topiary.

Much is said of The Nut at Stanley, but Table Cape at Wynyard is just as fascinating a geological feature. You can drive right to the top, to take in the views from the lookout, walk to the lighthouse and tiptoe through the tulips. The beautiful beaches of Boat Harbour and Sisters Beach are must-stops along this drive, and you can stretch your legs through Rocky Cape National Park. For the truly adventurous, the final stretch through to Marrawah rewards you with some of the best windswept coastline and surf breaks you will ever see.

Cockle Creek – famously the ‘end of the road’, the furthest south you can drive in Tasmania – is an oasis all of its own. To get there, you travel through the rich growing country of the Huon Valley, where roadside apple stalls abound and the road follows the Huon River for part of the way, with boats perfectly reflected in its dark depths. The forests get denser as you travel further south, and you can stop to walk among the treetops at Tahune or go underground at Hastings Caves. At Lune River the road turns to gravel, so you need to drive carefully and take your time, but the rewards are rich as you enter the Southwest National Park.

NEW NORFOLK TO QUEENSTOWN VIA MT FIELD Long known for its history and shops full of antiques and curios, New Norfolk is also undergoing a resurgence as a place to sample some of Tasmania’s finest produce. From here you can choose two routes on your way to the west. We recommend through Ellendale where it’s a quick detour up to Mt Field National Park, and you can choose walks from less than two hours to eight hours return. The road to Queenstown winds its way through lake country – watch out for the spectacular Hydro pipes at Tarraleah and stop off at Lake St Clair, Nelson Falls or Donaghy’s Lookout to take in some nature.

BURNIE TO ELIZABETH TOWN VIA PENGUIN AND PORT SORELL The ‘old coast road’ from Penguin to Ulverstone reveals wide expanses of blue sea, strips of beaches and, on a clear day, views all the way up the coast. Port Sorell and the surrounding Shearwater and Hawley areas have been home to holidaymakers for many years, and it’s easy to see why as you come upon vast white sandy beaches. Heading inland through the many farms along the way, you can stop to enjoy some of the fruits of their labour fresh from the ground, or just take in the views of rolling green paddocks and the mountain ranges beyond.

BURNIE TO STRAHAN, INCLUDING WARATAH AND CORINNA The mining towns of the West Coast showcase a fascinating part of our history, and driving via Waratah you can see this at its best, along with the waterfall that the town was built around. Head west deep into the forest to Corinna, where you can experience one of the most unique Tasmanian road trips – on the barge across the Pieman river, the only way to pass through this area. From here you can head south via Zeehan, or head further inland to Tullah and then back through Rosebery, then on to the vibrant village of Strahan.

HOBART TO TASMAN PENINSULA You don’t have to go far out of Hobart to get to some of the best beaches in southern Tasmania – Carlton and Park beaches are just two that provide a mix of sand and surf. Further on, some spectacular natural features are a muststop, including the Tessellated Pavement, and the more adventurous can try rockclimbing and bushwalking along the coastline. The Port Arthur Historic Site is a significant part of our history, and a must-do for history buffs and amateurs alike. At the time of writing, our state was in the grip of bushfires that threatened many areas. We recommend you check your destination before you go, drive to the conditions and please stay safe.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Kathryn Westwood

I

t was concerning to read in the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) Global Status Report on Road Safety (who.int) that international road fatalities have increased to 1.35 million each year (to 2016), and particularly that road traffic injuries continue to be the first cause of death among children and young adults aged 5-29.

TODAY,

The rate of death relative to the size of the world’s population has remained constant, which suggests the situation is not worsening (rather the population is increasing and there is rapid motorisation). However, realising the global aim of a 50% reduction in the number of road traffic deaths by 2020 remains far from achievable. In fact, from 2000 to 2016 the number of road traffic deaths worldwide per 100,000 head of population has only decreased a small amount – from 18.8 to 18.2. Road safety remains a major public health issue, particularly in developing countries, where the average fatality rate sits at 27.5 per 100,000 population in low-income countries compared to 8.3 per 100,000 in high-income countries.

3,500

More people now die as a result of road traffic injuries than from HIV/ AIDS, tuberculosis or diarrhoeal diseases. Vulnerable road users – pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists – represent more than half of all global deaths. Pedestrians and cyclists represent 26% of all deaths, while those using motorised two- and three-wheelers comprise another 28%. In the Western Pacific region, of which Australia makes up a large proportion, the majority of deaths are among riders of motorised two and three-wheelers, who represent 36% of all deaths, followed by pedestrians and drivers/passengers of four-wheeled vehicles at 22%. Safety Strategy report shows that all states and the Northern Territory will miss the targets set down in the strategy that was signed up to by all governments in 2011 – to reduce road deaths by at least 30% by 2020. In the year to 31 December 2018, Australia recorded 1146 road deaths, 6.4 per cent less than to 31 December 2017, but still not enough to meet the 2020 targets. In Tasmania in 2018, there were 33 people killed on Tasmania’s roads, little change from 34 in 2017, and there were 280 serious injuries on our roads, up from to 269 in 2017. These alarming statistics show that we need to do more to increase the profile of road safety messaging in our community. Group Chief Executive Harvey Lennon and I represented RACT at the Federation Internationale de L’automobile (FIA) Annual General Assembly in Russia late last year. This important gathering was attended by automobile club representatives from throughout the world, where we discussed a number of issues facing future mobility, including road safety. It was pleasing to note that the

FIA is continuing its #3500lives campaign, where it features 15 ambassadors from the worlds of entertainment (Michael Fassbender, Patrick Dempsey, Pharrell Williams and Michelle Yeoh), motor racing (Fernando Alonso, Marc Márquez, Felipe Massa and Nico Rosberg), sport (Yohan Blake, Haile Gebrselassie, Antoine Griezmann, Vanessa Low, Rafael Nadal and Wayde van Niekerk), and politics (Anne Hidalgo). It encourages all road users to adopt simple, easily applicable and efficient road safety rules, the FIA’s Golden Rules for Road Safety. The campaign has now been translated into more than 30 languages and displayed in over 1100 cities in approximately 80 countries around the world. Closer to home, we will continue to make road safety a number one issue in our lobbying of candidates in the lead-up to the 2019 Federal Election. We will again be providing a platform for members and the public to contact their local candidates and express their issues and concerns. More details of this will be provided through our online channels in the coming weeks.

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

P

etrol prices continue to be a concern for Tasmanian motorists, and we have called on retailers, to ensure they are charging a fair price for fuel. At the time of writing, the wholesale price was about $1.20 per litre, meaning motorists should be buying unleaded fuel for less than $1.40 a litre. This would allow for a reasonable profit margin for retailers as well as easing the burden on Tasmanian household budgets. As a general rule, we are seeing lower prices in regional areas, which indicates urban retailers are obtaining very high margins. We congratulate retailers, mostly independent operators, who are doing the fair thing and selling petrol at a margin of 12 to 14 cents per litre, and encourage all motorists to support them. This will increase competition and encourage other retailers, including United Petroleum with which RACT has a strategic partnership, to drop their prices in order to maintain their market share. RACT has demonstrated significant support to United Petroleum under our partnership to offer members a price discount per litre of fuel purchased, but United and other major retailers needed to ensure their pricing reflects what is happening with the wholesale price. We have raised our concerns directly with United about ensuring our members – and other motorists – are not paying too much for fuel. We have also again raised our concerns with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). In addition, in our submission for the 2019 State Budget, we have asked the State Government to create a platform where fuel retailers must input accurate data, to

provide access to real-time fuel prices for all Tasmanians. This enables motorists to make informed decisions when considering their fuel purchase, while also ensuring retailers are accountable by making all price changes visible. Our members have shown great loyalty to United in the almost three years of our partnership, with members making more than 4.25 million transactions and saving more than $9.6 million. This financial year to date alone, almost half of our members have used United stations, with an average of almost 16 transactions per user in that time period. Also since the partnership started in March 2016, United has opened 11 new sites in Tasmania, providing increased competition in key locations. We have asked United to repay this loyalty by leading the market towards more acceptable margins, and for that company and other major retailers to do the right thing by Tasmanian motorists and charge what is a fair and reasonable price for petrol. We regularly publish the best fuel prices on our social media channels – we ask that you continue to share prices around the state with us. And we will continue to put pressure on the major retailers, including United, and discuss fuel pricing with the ACCC and the State Government. As readers of Journeys will know, we are preparing a 30-year future vision for mobility in Greater Hobart. We will be unveiling the vision during the next couple of months – ensuring that it is not only cost-effective and sustainable, but that it covers all modes of transport to benefit all Tasmanians. In finalising the vision, we have consulted widely with our members and all Tasmanians, and engaged with relevant experts to ultimately achieve a clear, deliverable plan. With this in mind, the Tasmanian and Australian governments will be strongly urged to support the implementation of the vision once it is finalised and released. We have also started preparation for our Greater Launceston and North-West mobility vision processes and will update members via our online channels in the coming weeks as these progress.

YOUR VIEWS Mobility vision

I am concerned at the anti-car bias of the panellists chosen to present the 30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision. Professor Jason Byrne and Dr Anna Lyth in particular are strong supporters of the ideological model of redesigning our cities to become high-density settlements aligned to public transport corridors. Planners have been spruiking this approach for the past 50 years, yet nowhere has it succeeded in reducing the continuing growth of low density suburban development and car use. The mode split between private car use and public transport has not changed in the past 40 years despite massive government expenditure on expanding public transport services and the high costs imposed on motorists. The reasons are simple. Public transport, necessarily linear in direction and intermittent in frequency, cannot meet the spatially dispersed and time-constrained activities undertaken by busy people in post-industrial societies. The fundamental structure of urban Hobart by the year 2050 is already with us. In the past 40 years more than three-quarters of population growth has occurred in Kingborough, Clarence and Sorell, and more than half of

all households now have at least two cars. Evidence suggests that these trends will continue into the future. Governments and the RACT need to recognise and accept that low density settlements and universal car use are not passing fads, but are intrinsic features of postindustrial societies. Good planning needs to ensure that these trends are managed in an economically efficient, socially harmonious and environmentally benign manner. Bob Cotgrove, Mt Nelson

RACT selected the independent five-member Greater Hobart Mobility Vision panel for their expertise across a range of areas, including infrastructure, future mobility and emerging technologies, engineering, urban planning, active and public transport as well as social and economic impacts. The panel consultation was just one part of the process to form our 30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision, which also included extensive consultation with stakeholders and members of the public and two online surveys, for which we received thousands of responses. All of this will be taken into account when forming our vision, which will be launched by the end of March 2019. For more information on the Greater Hobart Mobility Vision panel and process, go to hobartvision.ract.com.au – Editor

Call for headlight checks

I think it would be a good idea for police to check for maladjusted headlights when they check for drink drivers. Some lights cause a glare to oncoming motorists even when they are dipped. Those bluish coloured lights are particularly annoying and dangerous. Roger Fullerton, Norwood

Fuelling fire

During a November trip to Queensland petrol prices as low as 117.9 cents per litre were noted. Even independent petrol stations such as Freedom were 30 cents cheaper than the Tasmanian fuel price. As I see it Tasmania’s fuel price problem is with its delivery, storage and distribution. Typically fuel deliveries to Tasmania arrive in the same tanker and probably to four different ports each with associated port fees and charges. Fuel may only become a brand name fuel after delivery to an outlet. Tasmania’s method of storage and distribution of fuel significantly adds to Tasmanians’ fuel price pain. What should be investigated is why can an independent company with substantially fewer fuel outlets than exist in Tasmania be able to purchase fuel from a multinational brand name company, arrange delivery, sell (in November) fuel for 119.7 cents per litre and still make a profit. This company has outlets throughout Australia except Tasmania. This company’s fuel price is always lower than brand name companies. How? Why?

Phone concerns

I would like to put forward my views on what should be done to combat the scourge of those idiots who insist on using their phones while driving their cars. Monetary fines are not much of a deterrent so the government should enact legislation giving police the power to immediately confiscate the phone of anyone caught in the act of using it illegally and to destroy it, no excuse or exceptions allowed. This to be followed by widely publicising the event so that the community is aware of such actions. Then the idiots might start to get the message about the illegality of their stupidity. I can imagine the reaction of the civil libertarians who would decry such a penalty but something has to be done to protect the majority of us who obey the rules of the road. Peter Clark, Old Beach

Transport and logistics do play a part in the additional price we pay for fuel, but as indicated by the ACCC enquiry in Launceston, this only accounts for 5-7 cents per litre. Our biggest issue is the lack of real competition. I don’t think we should expect to pay below the wholesale price, which is what is happening in some states, but we should expect to pay a reasonable price so the retailer makes a reasonable living while not ripping off consumers. This unfortunately isn’t happening at the moment. Darren Moody, General Manager, Mobility Services

END OF THE ROAD PAULA SWARD

W

hen the Holden Equinox was launched into an already crowded mid-size SUV market in late 2017, the new name struggled to find ground against the more popular models of Mazda CX-5 and Nissan X-Trail. However, buyers in this market who fail to take the Equinox into consideration risk missing out on an all-encompassing package that offers so much for (comparatively) little money. The five-seater Equinox was designed to fill the hole left when Holden stopped making the Captiva. The Mexicanbuilt machine provides excellent handling and comfort, plenty of room front and back, and loads of features both in the safety and technology departments. While the base model LS is just that, a base, moving up to the LS+ onwards gives you the Holden Eye forward facing camera system, with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, following distance indicator and forward collision alert with head-up warning. This came in very handy on our drive when the vehicle in front braked suddenly, and the multiple warning systems quickly snapped me to action to avoid a crash. Add to this side blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert and a slightly

24  Journeys

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

disconcerting safety alert in the driver’s seat that vibrates when it believes you are about to hit something, and the vehicle almost speaks to you. In the top-spec LTZ-V, you get all the ‘bells and whistles’, including some you never thought you would need such as heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats (yep, that’s right, they blow cool air through the seats… and it was a welcome addition in the summer weather we were experiencing during our drive!). Hopping in the LTZ-V AWD diesel, the first thing I noticed was the space. Not only is there great leg and headroom in the front (easily made larger by the electronic controls on both driver and passenger seats), but the rear passenger space would comfortably fit three adults. In addition, the 846L rear luggage space is more than enough for the usual stuff people travel with, expanding to 1798L with the rear seats folded down. The Equinox did not drive like a huge car. The steering has been tuned well to suit open road driving, handling our Sunday Drive into Tasmania’s far south with ease. Armed with swimsuits and more than a little courage, we decided to tackle the ‘end of the road’ – touring through the picturesque Huon region to Cockle Creek – the furthest

south you can travel in Australia. And we nearly made it… had I not been driving a borrowed vehicle and already encountered some slightly unnerving moments on the gravel road (due to other road users, not the vehicle itself) coupled with two ‘starving’ children in the back, we may well have reached the end of the road. But suffice to say we glimpsed enough of this picturesque coastline to ensure we will go back. Along the way, however, we discovered some beautiful spots in which to rest and relax. A recommendation from a Facebook follower uncovered the Heritage Park at Geeveston, hidden away among the trees. This great little spot is equipped with barbecues and a multi-age group play area that would keep kids of all ages entertained for hours. I also noticed campers nearby taking advantage of the lush green grass and easy-access facilities, and when we popped in on our return journey in the afternoon, the nearby carpark adjacent to the Visitor Centre was being set up for what looked like an evening food market – and I made a mental note to return one day soon. Keen to make the most of the stunning sunny weather, we pushed on to Hastings Caves, where the thermal springs feed a pool for public swimming. Again, excellent facilities included the café at the Visitors’ Centre, change rooms and barbecues, along with a walk to explore the springs and the chance to spot a platypus (not that any platypus in its right mind would pop up with all the noise we were making!). At only $12 for two adults and up to three children, the thermal springs and pool area is a great way to enjoy a day out. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the caves

themselves for $60 for two adults and up to three children – again, another note for our next visit. After the relaxing visit to the thermal springs, it was time to put the Equinox to more of a test. Keen to see the ‘end of the road’, we ventured forward onto gravel, taking our time in the unfamiliar conditions. The AWD of the Equinox was more than up to the task – even when we encountered speeding motorists on our side of the road coming from the other direction, not once did it falter. For which I was very grateful – the weight of responsibility of my passengers along with a borrowed vehicle did not leave me until we felt the smooth lines of bitumen again. A stop at The Bears Went Over the Mountain at Geeveston on the way back uncovered another delight in this little town – which was just as well as my ‘under-fed’ children polished off chocolate scones and milk in a flash. More delight abounded upon the discovery that the cricket was on the telly – not very authentic but a welcome distraction as we waited for the hunger to be sated. Unfortunately we ran out of time to do so many more things we would have liked – sample freshly picked apples from a roadside stall; accept the kind invitation of The Moorings at Lady Franklin to pop in for a meal; and walk among the treetops or try cable hang gliding at Tahune Forest Adventures to name a few. But there will be plenty more times and many more road trips to come – hopefully one day in something as classy and feature-packed as the Holden Equinox. Holden Equinox priced from $27,990 drive away for the LS manual, up to $49,290 for the LTZ-V diesel. FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

‘Hyundai has now given us a compelling reason to consider an electric vehicle.’

FIRST DRIVES: HYUNDAI IONIQ DARREN MOODY

H

yundai has stolen the march in bringing relatively affordable electric vehicles to Australia with the release of a threevehicle IONIQ range, which includes Hybrid (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) and full Battery Electric (BEV) powertrains. Each model is available in two trim levels, mid-spec Elite or Premium. The headline act for me is the BEV. Featuring an 88kW 295Nm permanent magnet synchronous electric motor powered by 360v 28kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, allowing a realworld range of about 230km, this will alleviate range anxiety for a lot of prospective buyers. IONIQ is capable of being recharged to 80% capacity in around 23 minutes via a 100kW DC fast charger. A 6.6kW onboard AC charger can charge the battery in as little as 4 hours 25 minutes when connected to a charging station of equal or higher capacity. With the installation of a personal charging station, this will allow a full overnight charge at home. Drive is to the front wheels via a single-speed reduction gear transmission. The BEV also has a paddle-shift-operated regenerative function, with three regeneration levels and, when used effectively, will increase your range and reduce wear on brake pads. 26  Journeys

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

2019 IONIQ Electric Premium.

On the road, the IONIQ BEV is pretty well like any other non-electric vehicle, with the absence of engine noise. There are three switchable drive modes, Eco, Regular and Sport, which add additional torque as you select each mode. The system was evident when holding a constant throttle position and changing modes. All models have had input from the Australian suspension engineering team to ensure the on-road drive and handling experience meets our standards and deals with our unique road conditions. If you still have range anxiety, you might consider the PHEV. This model will give you about 63km real-world driving range in EV mode, which more than covers the average commute distance, while offering the added peace of mind of a highly efficient Atkinson cycle petrol engine when the battery gets low. The PHEV has an 8.9kWh storage battery driving a 44kW 170Nm electric motor via a six-speed dual clutch auto transmission. Charge time via 240v is around two hours fifteen minutes. However, the PHEV can’t be charged via a DC fast charger. While you can operate the PHEV in EV mode, the petrol engine will seamlessly cut in under certain conditions including cold starts and when you might need more power

for fast acceleration or steeper inclines. The official rated combined fuel consumption for the PHEV is 1.1L/100km. Completing the three-vehicle range is the traditional hybrid that uses a combination of an electric motor and the same 1.6L petrol engine, but battery charging happens when the vehicle is decelerating, through energy regeneration via the electric motor. This is a similar drivetrain to those seen in Toyota Prius and Camry, with the exception of a six-speed DCT auto, where the Toyota models use a CVT auto. Combined fuel consumption for the Elite specification is 3.4L/100km riding on 15” wheels, while the Premium model riding on 17” returns 3.9L/100km. All models get a full suite of active safety features including forward alert, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitoring and active cruise control. The BEV gets an electric park brake, while the others get a footoperated mechanism. The BEV also adds a smart stop-and-go system to the active cruise control. All the usual connectivity options are available via the 8” multimedia touchscreen display with standard Sat Nav that can be used in a split-screen mode. There are a multitude of menus

LIFE ON THE MOVE

NISSAN LEAF

within the system, with one section dedicated to electric drivetrain and battery information. You can set a time for charging to start after you plug in, which may allow you to take advantage of lower power rates when you are fast asleep. HEV and PHEV get dual-zone climate control while BEV gets single climate control. The BEV can also be set to ‘driver-only’ mode, which shuts down all but the driver’s vents, increasing overall efficiency. Inside there is seating for five in what I’d describe as a large small car. Boot space is a little less than you might expect because some space is taken by the battery. Following the eco-theme, natural and recyclable materials have been used in door trims, with the overall style and ambiance I’d describe as slick and functional, but not luxury. You do, however, get leather-appointed seats in the top spec Premium variants and that lifts the overall interior feel. I’m not totally convinced about the front-end styling on this model, but understand the aerodynamic efficiencies that are created by removing the grille. Hyundai claims a 0.24cd drag coefficient for the BEV,

which is an extremely low number. The rear hatch uses a split rear screen to allow for additional rearward vision while maintaining a wind-efficient design. The two hybrid models have a more traditional look at the front with a grille, with the electronics control air inlets on the grille opening and closing based on the amount of cooling required. IONIQ is the cheapest BEV on the market in Australia and has reasonable real-world range that would be more than adequate for most Tasmanian day-to-day and commute driving. Hyundai will also release a BEV Kona SUV in early 2019 that will have a claimed range of more than 400km. IONIQ BEV in Elite specification is $44,990 (plus on road costs), HEV is $33,990 while the PHEV is $40,990. Premium specification adds $4000 to $5000 depending on the variant. Servicing costs for the BEV over five years total $800, so there are more savings to be found there. Hyundai has now given us a compelling reason to consider an electric vehicle. Take one for a test drive, and I guarantee you will be surprised and delighted.

The first generation Nissan Leaf sold about 700 vehicles across the six years it was on sale in Australia, with most going into fleets and then filtering through to early adopters. Range was about 120km on a good day and charging facilities other than at home were almost non-existent. Not an ideal place to start, but Nissan was the pioneer in EVs in Australia and should be recognised for that. Moving to 2019, things have changed a lot with quite a few more EVs available, and charging infrastructure is slowly becoming more common. Battery technology has continued to evolve to now allow a lot more real-world range, and people are talking and considering EVs as an option for their next vehicle, so the time is right to release the second generation Leaf. Leaf will have a slightly longer realworld range than the Hyundai IONIQ at about 270km, thanks to a larger 40kWh battery. Charging can be AC or DC and is estimated to be around 60 minutes on a DC fast charger and up to 24 hours from a standard power point at home. Leaf has 110kW of power, which is up 38% over the old model, while torque increases 14% to 320Nm, which should equate to a lively drive. Leaf will feature bi-direction charging capability, meaning it could be used to power your home as a power storage unit. Leaf will feature e-pedal which allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop by using the accelerator pedal alone. Nissan claims using the e-pedal will eliminate the requirement to use the vehicle brakes up to 90% of the time. Leaf should be available mid-2019. No pricing has been announced at this time.

‘Q8 has the latest in natural voice recognition software, which I thought I’d try out to see if it could handle some Australian colloquialisms.’

FIRST DRIVES: AUDI Q8 DARREN MOODY

O

ver the years, Audi has tried to fill every niche with a variety of sub-models to appeal to all personalities, aiming to gain an advantage over the other luxury marques it competes with. However, with the latest range-topping Q8, Audi is moving into an existing segment, competing against BMW X6 and Mercedes Benz GLE Coupé. Based on the Q7 platform, Q8 is wider both in body and wheel track, but shorter and lower, providing that sportscoupé look. Q8 also picks up Audi’s latest design language with a bolder and wider single frame grille, contoured air inlets with ‘blistered’ guards to accentuate that wide hunkered look, while the rear is highlighted with a light strip connecting both tail light assemblies. There’s a sloping roofline to the D pillar to accentuate that coupé-like appearance (yes it still has four doors), and it has frameless doors similar to those you might find in a sports coupé. Rear seat headroom isn’t compromised with the sloping roof design, and there’s a load-carrying capacity of 605L, expanding to 1755L with the second row folded flat. All Australian delivered Q8s are fitted with S-line package as standard with 21” wheels and, as you might expect, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, three-zone climate control and wireless phone charging, just to name a few. Digitalisation surrounds you when you enter the driver’s seat. In front of you is Audi’s 12.3” virtual cockpit display, and in the centre of the dashboard is a 10.1” display screen for the multi-media interface, with an 8.6” lower display for climate control along with an array of functional electronic buttons. Actual physical buttons are limited to just a few. Q8 has the latest in natural voice recognition software, which I thought I’d try out to see if it could handle some Australian colloquialisms. I suggested that I needed to go to the toilet, but might not have said it exactly that way. My wording didn’t matter, as it located the closest toilet and offered me immediate directions. 28  Journeys

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

There are 39 driver assistance systems fitted as standard. A few innovative items that stood out included exit warning, which detects vehicles and cyclists and can actually delay the door from opening. The other is intersection crossing assist, which monitors the area in front and at the side of the vehicle on junctions and exit roads up to 75m in both directions to detect oncoming vehicles. If you attempt to proceed you will get visual and acoustic warnings. If the situation becomes critical, a warning brake jolt follows. At launch, the only powertrain is a 3.0L 250kW, 500Nm V6 turbo petrol, driving a 40:60 rear-biased quattro AWD system via an 8-speed torque convertor auto transmission. As with all quattro systems, drive can be distributed via a mechanical centre differential to the axle with the most grip. Audi employs a 48V electrical system that allows the vehicle to shut the engine down at speeds below 22km/h for the stop-start system, and allows the engine to shut down when coasting at considerably higher speeds under the right conditions. The engine is seamlessly restarted by the 48V alternator via a drive belt to the engine. A 3.0L turbo diesel will be available later in the year. here are some things about our unique island that are so familiar they go unnoticed. One example is our road signs – describing the local conditions but with an international vocabulary. It’s easy to take them for granted – we follow them unthinkingly and their message is law. But when and where did these shapes come from? Why do we have octagons and circles, and when did they first appear?

The first formal lobbying for standardised road signs – familiar to the traveller as well as the local – was by the Italian Touring Club in 1895. Over the decades to come, ad-hoc road signs were put up either by private clubs or by automobile service companies; the French tyre company Michelin placed thousands of signs across France as both public service and savvy advertisement. In 1900, a consortium of motoring clubs proposed a set of four standard signs for travellers in Europe: train crossing, dangerous junction, bumpy roads and sharp corners. By contrast, a competing Scandinavian system had started in Sweden that used only a single design – a red triangle to warn of upcoming dangers without specifying what that danger actually was. In the 1920s, the standardisation of road signs took on a formal international aspect with the establishment of the post-World War I League of Nations Committee for Communications and Transit. In addition to maritime signals and electric transmission, they tried to create a symbolic design vocabulary for road signage. With the growth of automobile usage, their work began to spread throughout Europe. In 1927, a Swiss delegation added several urban designs to the conversation: one-way streets, parking zones and no entry signs. These were designed for those running errands in the city rather than travelling intercity. During the same period, the League of Nations committee established round signs for speed limits, and triangular signs as danger warnings. They also proposed rectangular white-onblue city limits signage, making a distinct boundary between townships and open roads.

Some elements came from the United States: the octagonal stop sign from a 1920s Mississippi scheme that used circular signs to mark the most hazardous points. Octagons marked the next most dangerous, then diamonds and rectangles. The scheme spread worldwide, and today in Tasmania we have octagonal stop signs, diamond warning signs and rectangular information signs.

A personal favourite of mine is the motorcycle warning sign, showing the tyre skid marks of a bike that has just performed some impossible manoeuvre. Near the coastline, keep your eyes open for a penguin warning sign – these animals come ashore to burrow on land and you’ll need to travel slowly. The most famous Tasmanian sign alerts drivers to Tasmanian devils in the region. Despite devils having been present interstate long ago, you won’t find these signs anywhere but here. Another much-appreciated local sign is the black and white wildlife warning sign, showing a jauntily tilted car colliding with a wallaby. However, the proportions are all wrong, and the wallaby appears to be almost larger than the sedan that’s knocking it over. But of all the millions of road signs across our amazing country, I think perhaps the one you’ll like best is the ‘Prepare to stop’ sign at Cockle Creek, 120km south of Hobart. This is the very southern end of Australia’s road, and a good reminder of just how well humans can organise a system that stretches clear across the continents.

ACROSS AUSTRALIA

Australia has had a similar progression from auto club-driven advocacy. In the early 1810s, the first road specifications for wheeled vehicles were established under Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Local Australian motoring clubs formed with the intent of improving the motoring experience and road signage was a major component. The Royal Auto Club of Victoria formed in 1903, Western Australia’s launched in 1905, and the RACT in 1923. By 1927, the Australian mainland adopted a standardised set of road signs and Tasmania followed soon after. Today, Australia has more than 500 official road signs across 800,000km of roads, all readily interpretable to anyone fluent in English. Tasmania’s road network is now completely linked up to that of interstate, through the rather imaginative concept of the Australian east coast highway continuing right across Bass Strait on the deck of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. However, Tasmania’s 24,000km of roads have a few oddities all of their own.

Product Safety Recall To Subaru owners, Since it was announced that Subaru vehicles were part of the global Takata airbag inflator recall, Subaru Australia has been working diligently to contact owners and replace all affected inflators as quickly as possible. In Australia, a total of 282,971 Subaru vehicles are subject to this recall and as of November 30, 2018 we have already permanently rectified over 176,000 vehicles. For all remaining affected vehicles, there continues to be a risk to the vehicle occupants, in the event of an accident that results in the front passenger-side airbag inflator deploying. Affected Subaru vehicles include Forester (Model Years (MY)2009-2013), Impreza including WRX/WRX STI (MY2004-2007, MY2008-2014), Liberty/Outback (MY2004-2009, MY2010-2014), Liberty Exiga (MY2010-2014) and Tribeca (MY2007-2013).

What is the issue? Affected Subaru vehicles contain a passenger-side front Takata airbag inflator that is subject to a MANDATORY SAFETY RECALL issued by the Australian Government following an investigation in which the ACCC concluded that certain Takata airbag inflators are faulty and could kill or seriously injure occupants of the vehicle. As the inflator gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can affect airbags with the fault. If the vehicle is involved in a collision, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force, causing metal shrapnel to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.

TOWARD YOU AND YOUR PASSENGERS. THIS COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Important: Only the passenger-side front Takata airbag inflator in affected Subaru vehicles is subject to the Mandatory Safety Recall.

What to do next? We are asking all Subaru owners to check if their Subaru remains affected and if so, to urgently contact a Subaru Service Centre to arrange for the airbag inflator to be replaced free of charge. Subaru owners can see if their vehicle is affected by entering in their vehicle’s details at subaru.com.au/takata-recall or by contacting our dedicated Recall Contact Centre on 1300 550 994 (Monday- Friday 8am - 8pm AEST and Saturday 8.30am-5pm AEST. Closed Public Holidays). Our Contact Centre will also be able to assist if you need help in another language. If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, contact us through the National Relay Service by calling 1800 555 660 and ask for 1300 550 994 or visit relayservice.gov.au. Please note that any replacement airbag installed in the vehicle following a previous collision or other incident may also be faulty. It is critical that you urgently contact a Subaru Service Centre to arrange for the airbag to be checked and, if faulty, to be replaced. We also ask that you urge any friends, family or colleagues that own a Subaru vehicle, to please check to see if their Subaru is affected, and if so, to take urgent action. Customer safety is our number one priority so we thank you for your understanding and support. Yours sincerely,

Colin Christie Managing Director – Subaru Australia

An epic adventure over three weekends through the heartlands of Tasmania

S

B U S H L AT ONE WITH NATURE

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR BODIES WHEN WE DIE? It’s a fascinating and confronting question many of us have asked at one point or another, but UK artistic duo French & Mottershead (Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead) are helping us find an answer in their latest piece, Bushland.

Bushland is an audio work that guides listeners through the journey of their decomposing body. A soothing voice speaks gently through the headphones and describes the blood draining from the face, the sphincters opening as the contents of the bowel and bladder leak out, the hundreds of flies depositing thousands of eggs all over the body and the smell of putrid gas piercing the air as bacteria digests body tissue. As time passes and seasons change, plants are fertilised by the decomposing fluids and begin to grow, and the remains of the body become an important resource for animals and insects. Bushland is designed to be listened to while lying on the ground in the bush, with the aim of taking audiences beyond a normal, run-of-the-mill experience of nature. The piece is not intended to be gross or to scare listeners with graphic details. The science of the decomposition process is emotionalised and delivered almost like poetry or meditation, creating a peaceful and reflective experience. ‘When you’re lying down in the bush, to have the sunlight coming through the gumtrees and to feel the rough ground beneath your back, it sort of makes it a multi-sensory experience and people really get immersed in that and they lose themselves,’ Andrew Mottershead said.

‘There’s a sense of disgust as well, and people go through a sort of primal revulsion about what is being described at some points. But then, there’s this response of how something so horrible can be so beautiful as an experience.’ The Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery at Cradle Mountain Hotel will host the first of three exhibitions of Bushland across Tasmania as part of Ten Days on the Island. Launching in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park serves as an important reminder of how amazing nature can be and that we shouldn’t take it for granted. As audiences lie on the bush floor, looking up at Tasmania’s pristine beauty and listening to their body decomposing into the environment around them, they may find themselves reflecting upon their own mortality, quality of life and what happens after death - topics that are so often swept under the rug. Bushland also encourages listeners to consider their place in the world, to show more compassion for their body and to form a connection with nature. ‘It’s about giving you an opportunity to have a sense of responsibility for the environment as well, because you’re acknowledging your place within it. And also, how we can be responsible for destroying it,’ Andrew said.

IMAGE: PAUL BLAKEMORE

A N D ‘We should be humble. We are one small part of the world and not its rulers.’ Bushland is an Australian adaptation of Woodland, a similar piece part of a larger collection of work exploring death and the body. To bring the collection to life and to ensure scientific accuracy, French & Mottershead collaborated with experts and scientists and even observed scientific experiments examining decomposing animal bodies, which gave them a real sense of the textures and smells the body produces and how nature interacts with it. ‘It’s really interesting to understand. Just things like the smell and how familiar that smell is,’ Andrew said. ‘It’s something you get from the drains, that particular stage of the decomposition. It’s something familiar, but you don’t quite know what it is.’

For the Australian adaption, French & Mottershead spoke with Aboriginal guides about their connection with the land. The duo also enlisted the expertise of Professor Shari Forbes of the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER), a body donation research facility in the Blue Mountains dedicated to studying the decomposition of human remains. Professor Forbes’ knowledge of Australia’s drier climate and flora and fauna, and how that impacts the body, was incorporated into Bushland, making the piece relevant to a south-eastern Australian environment. The fear of dying alone was the motive behind this work. Having lived by himself in a flat on the 13th floor of an apartment block in south-east London, Andrew was fascinated with stories of people who had died alone and their remains found years later. It led him to wonder what would

happen to his body if he was ever found in the same situation. ‘As an artist, you have this opportunity to be able to follow your curiosity and answer that question,’ Andrew said. ‘It’s a way of sharing that curiosity and giving people the opportunity to look at themselves through the eyes of a forensic anthropologist.’ French & Mottershead hope Bushland will puncture the fear of dying in a calming and uplifting way. Don’t be scared to experience the piece. It is an intriguing opportunity for Tasmanians to reflect upon life and death, to be at one with nature and to immerse themselves in our island state in a way they may have never thought possible. tanding at the start of the South Coast Track, I’m unaware of what is ahead of me. I’m nervous, apprehensive, and energised by a bubbling excitement that threatens to burst out of my chest at any moment. My three friends and I grin at each other like giddy preschoolers and start down the track, each knowing that while this could be gruelling and perhaps despair-inducing, it will undoubtedly be an adventure to remember. The wildness of the track appeals to a part of me that despises the modern comforts of the world. the way humans have for thousands of years. Of course you can’t escape modern comforts completely – our smartphones are in our bags and I’ve got a portable charger in case they run out of battery. Pulling out my phone, I take some photos of the boys trudging ahead of me. I almost unconsciously look to check my messages or emails, or skim quickly through Instagram, but of course I can’t. The mountains, like some giant technological wall, block any reception from coming through. Slowly, dreamlike, I lock my phone and put it back into my bag. After two days we settle into a routine. Waking up at roughly the same time, we wash our faces before heading to the long-drop toilets.

We pack up our tents, carefully refilling our backpacks so the 20-plus kilos of weight falls evenly on our backs. Breakfast consists of powdered milk and oats accompanied by jokes and laughter. After we fill our bottles with tannin-brown water we set off, subconsciously organising ourselves into a line of bopping backpacks. Before long we settle into the rhythm of the walk and we fall silent as we focus on where our feet are rising and falling, like some kind of enforced meditation. Lunch is a treat. Falafel mix, muesli bars, cheese, chorizo, crackers, vegemite, and if we’re doing good time, a cup of tea. The afternoon hiking is the hardest. The mountains grow taller and the mud sinks deeper and

‘It’s also the silence of the wild as we sit together, punctuated by the lack of screens and distractions, a silence that very quickly speaks more of comradeship and comfort than it does of awkwardness.’ all I want is a shower and a lie down. We stumble into camp and in a fog of fatigue and hunger set up our tents and change into fresh thermals. The sky darkens as we huddle around the Trangia, cooking and catching up on the day’s events, even though we’ve been right next to each other all day. Yet the evening isn’t just all talking and laughing. It’s also the silence of the wild as we sit together, punctuated by the lack of screens and distractions, a silence that very quickly speaks more of comradeship and comfort than it does of awkwardness. Halfway through day three I’m almost done. My legs burn and scream at me as I heave myself up another rocky step, swirling wind and my

own furiously beating heart all I hear. The close-packed line of backpacks has most definitely dispersed as each of us attempts to propel ourselves upwards across the Ironbound Ranges. The ridge we are following continuously teases us with false summit after summit, and I’m desperately trying to not look up in case the Ironbounds view it as a challenge. A hundred metres or so behind me I hear a watery high pitched wheeze as one of the boys vomits onto the track – the Ranges have been harder on some of us than others. At the (final) summit we divide our sick friend’s pack between us before we start the long, treacherous descent off the mountains. After five hours of crashing through

slicing ferns, falling over roots and slipping down marble slabs, I’m emotionally and physically exhausted. Lagging behind, I start to question why on earth I thought it would be a good idea to come on this trek. Walks in Tasmania don’t have to be this hard. Indeed many of the state’s greatest walks offer comfort alongside nature. Foot rubs, red wine and rare steaks with guides to carry most of your gear. You can essentially get the best of both worlds – amazing scenery with all the mod cons. These luxury packages are assuredly a good thing, enabling a range of people to experience Tasmania’s wilderness. And yet, isn’t the struggle what the adventure is all about? FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF ASIA

I

t’s easy to understand why Asia is a favourite holiday destination for Australian travellers. With its fascinating traditions, cuisines and landscapes, Asia offers a truly unique travel experience. Bunnik’s small group tours will help you discover the magic of this continent. A maximum group size of 20 passengers ensures you can connect with people, places and cultures. You will have more time with your guide, spend less time waiting for others, enjoy more space on the touring vehicles and develop lasting friendships with your fellow travellers. While Bunnik’s small group tours include all the expected famous sights, they also incorporate special experiences that are difficult to access when travelling alone and logistically impossible for large tour groups.

Kandy, Sri Lanka.

During our Sri Lankan Discovery small group tour, you will be charmed by the island’s unspoilt natural beauty, friendly people and ancient history. See the impressive ruins of Anuradhapura, explore the famous rock fortress of Sigiriya and leave the beaten tourist track to enjoy a sunset cruise along the jungle-fringed Gin Oya river and dinner with a local family on the riverbank. For more details about the 2019 Bunnik Tours Asia program, visit your local RACT Travel office.

A feast for the senses ELENI VAILAS, SENIOR TRAVEL CONSULTANT, RACT TRAVEL HOBART

A

s we cycled through a small Sri Lankan village, I took in the sights and smells around me – aromas of delicious food, traditional dwellings and scenes of day-to-day village life. We stop at a villager’s house and are welcomed warmly, a feast of curries using local ingredients laid out before us. I was blown away by the rich and spicy flavours of the Sri Lankan food. During my journey I sampled a variety of vegetarian curries, including the more unusual flavours of apple, beetroot and banana. I just wanted to keep eating – the food was sooo good! We were also taken into places many tourists would not be able to experience, including the simple lives of the villagers who were so kind – they just wanted us to love their country! My stomach and heart full, we returned on our bikes to Minneriya Park, a national park in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, which is a dry season feeding ground for the local elephant population. The size and majesty of these creatures was breathtaking as we got as close as we dared without disturbing them in their natural habitat.

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

We were treated to some amazing natural and historic sights during our journey. None more so than the colonial town of Galle, where we visited the 300-year-old UNESCO World Heritage listed fort built by the Dutch in 1663. Surrounded by amazing architecture and filled with colonial remnants, this was one of the favourite areas I wandered through on my trip. Other historic highlights included the colourful paintings and statues of Buddha inside the Cave Temple that date back to the first century BC, and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, with its many untouched archeological relics, which has also been heritage listed by UNESCO. We explored one of the most spectacular landscapes in Sri Lanka, Horton Plains, a large plateau over 2000m high, overlooked by the second and third highest peaks in Sri Lanka. Our guided walk took us through the rolling grasslands, and we visited ‘World’s End’, where the ground drops 1050m to the plains. If this wasn’t enough of a feast for the eyes, we continued to Ella Gap, where almost the entire southern part of the island of Sri Lanka is in view,

and on a particularly clear day, the shimmering silver of the Indian Ocean is visible. Of course, we couldn’t visit Sri Lanka without visiting a tea plantation. Our destination was Nuwara Eliya, a city in the hill country of Central Province, considered one of the most important locations for tea cultivation and the coolest climate in Sri Lanka. We were able to pick some tea leaves and buds and taste the finished product, which while I’m not a tea drinker was an interesting experience. For me, one of the most fascinating cultural highlights was traditional stilt

TRAVEL

fishing, which was quite a common sight along the coastline until the 2004 tsunami, and has regained popularity in recent years. I was amazed at the skill and grace of the fishermen as they perched a couple of metres above the water on branched poles embedded into the sea floor. I didn’t try it myself, although you can book a tour to do so – perhaps something for next time. Also on my list for next time would be learning to surf at one of Sri Lanka’s surf schools, after spending a few days after my tour had finished on Unawatuna Beach on the south coast just outside of Galle.

‘I was amazed at the skill and grace of the fishermen as they perched a couple of metres above the water on branched poles embedded into the sea floor.’

Sweden, Norway and Denmark boast sophisticated cosmopolitan cities and are frequently rated among the happiest and most livable countries in the world — and it’s not hard to understand why. From quaint fishing villages and charming architecture to spectacular fjords and vast mountain ranges, these Nordic treasures feature the perfect fusion of rich cultural heritage and astonishing natural beauty. This northern European wonderland is captivating all year round, whether you travel there to see the mysterious aurora borealis dancing in the winter sky, or

to bask in the never-ending sunlight of Scandinavia’s magical summer months. Viking’s founder, Torstein Hagen, hails from Norway, so Viking’s heritage is well and truly steeped in this remarkable region. This, coupled with their extensive range of Scandinavian-based cruise itineraries, means that Viking have become the go-to experts when it comes to exploring Scandinavia and all that it has to offer. Viking recently released two brand-new departure dates for one of their most popular Scandinavian cruise itineraries — Trade Routes of the Middle Ages — one for September 2019 and the other for August 2020. Sailings are from Bergen to Barcelona or vice versa, and staterooms onboard this sought-after cruise are already selling fast, so be sure to book soon to avoid any disappointment.

RACT TRAVEL

TAKES YOU AWAY OUR HOT SPOTS FOR 2019 Tasmanians truly are intrepid travellers and our team of consultants love putting together all the amazing and unique itinerary requests they receive each year. Your holiday needs to be what you want it to be. Whether that is a relaxing South Pacific cruise or an adventurous trek along the Silk Road, we can tailor-make your itinerary so it fits you perfectly. Lonely Planet has released its Best in Travel 2019 and among those listed in the top 10 destinations to visit are Normandy, France; Russia’s Far East; Manitoba, Canada; and the Red Centre, Australia. I asked our teams of experts for their top destinations that they would love to be sending you away to in 2019. And for me? Well it’s the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Also in the Lonely Planet top 10 for 2019. The Orkney Islands with all its amazing history covering so many periods in time. Such a contrast to the mountainous Isle of Skye with its fantastic hiking trails. And who cannot help but be moved by the tragedy of the Jacobites, retold with such passion in places like Inverness and Fort William. Christine Benbow Travel Sales Manager

GEORGIA (AND WE DON’T MEAN USA!)

A great destination for those who have ‘done Europe’, its location on the Silk Road means that it has a wonderfully rich history and is culturally just that little bit different. Really though, the main reason is the incredible scenery that changes from arid, rocky expanses to sweeping mountain scenery and deep green gorges.

Team Rosny

SCANDINAVIA

For those that have already done the standard European countries and are ready to explore a little further. Countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland are a very safe option for Australians to visit.

JAPAN

Direct flights from both Melbourne and Sydney, fantastic rail network to get around, hospitable culture, great food scene and the best cherry blossom viewing in the world. And for all those sports lovers, Japan will host the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the Olympics in 2020.

EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISING

While the traditional 15-day Amsterdam to Budapest is still popular, think further afield to some of the lesser-known rivers such as the Volga in Russia, the Duoro in Portugal and the Rhone in France for your next river cruise.

TRAVEL How long have you been in travel and what travelling experience do you have? In seven years in the travel industry, I have travelled to 26 countries with many more on my list. I like to think that I am a UK and Europe expert as well as Canada and the USA. I have done solo travel, group touring travel, river cruising, hiking holidays, driving holidays, everything from camping to 5-star, and I love to travel to destinations in winter when there are fewer tourists around and shorter queues. What do you like best about working at RACT Travel? I enjoy the variety of destinations that our clients like to visit and also working in a team of very experienced travel advisers with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.

MEET THE TEAM PAULA BELL TEAM LEADER, MURRAY ST BRANCH

What is your favourite destination and why? Ireland is a great country for a driving holiday. I find there is never enough time to see it all. The Republic of Ireland is actually similar in area to Tasmania, so nowhere is too far and there are so many beautiful mountains and coastlines to

enjoy. Not to mention the lovely people, quaint pubs, history and culture. Do you have a specialist style of travel you are an expert in? There is nothing better than creating a personal holiday package for clients and then seeing them enjoying the trip of a lifetime that you helped bring to life. Being part of their journey brings such personal and job satisfaction. I am an expert on European River Cruising. This is one of the most relaxing holidays that I have personally experienced, and was lucky enough to incorporate it with German Christmas Markets season. Where would you like your next holiday to be and why? Scotland – the history, the Lochs, kilts, tartans, people and scenery have me planning another holiday! What is your best travel tip? Include ‘packing cubes’ as part of your luggage preparation. These inexpensive items allow you to segment your clothing, shoes, camera gear, etc into order, so you’re not scrambling through a whole suitcase trying to find those clean pair of socks.
