FROM THE PRESIDENT Kathryn Westwood
W
ith Australia’s road safety statistics continuing to hover at very concerning levels, I am left to wonder what more can be done to raise awareness of the dangers on our roads. The recent Australian Automobile Association’s (AAA) quarterly Benchmarking of The National Road Safety Strategy report shows that all states and the Northern Territory will miss the targets set down in the strategy that was signed up to by all governments in 2011. There were 1222 deaths on Australian roads in 2017-18 (only one fewer than 2016-17). Only two years out from the strategy’s target date, fatalities remain far higher than the rate needed to meet the strategy’s agreed goal, which is reducing road deaths by at least 30% by 2020. In the year to June 2018, all states and the Northern Territory recorded ‘red light warnings’, meaning they are on a trajectory that makes them unlikely to meet the 2020 targets. The report shows that in the 2017-18 financial year, 35 people died on Tasmanian roads, compared to 31 deaths in 2016-17, an increase of 12.9% on the previous year. In addition, when compared to the rest of the country, Tasmania’s annual road deaths are at 6.67 per 100,000 people, second only to the Northern Territory at 17.02 per 100,000 people. Added to this, road crashes resulting in serious road trauma are causing devastating social and financial impacts within our communities. The AAA commissioned a report 4
Journeys

to analyse the benefits of reducing the average age of Australia’s light vehicle fleet by one year. The report studied two scenarios – a take-up period of four years, and a take-up period of eight years – and mapped the benefits over a period of 20 years. The report showed that by reducing the average age to 8.8 years over a four-year period, 1377 lives could be saved in the next 20 years. In addition, $19.7 billion could be saved as a result of reduced road trauma and a reduction in emissions. The second scenario, with a longer take-up period (eight years), could save 1206 lives and save $16.8 billion over 20 years. It is pleasing to see that the National Road Safety Strategy enquiry report, which was tabled in Federal Parliament in September, has called for stronger leadership to address the hidden epidemic of road trauma. This recommendation needs to be implemented as soon as possible in order to halt the rising road toll and the impact on families, and our health system. When we talk about road safety, we focus on the ‘fatal five’ – speed, alcohol and drugs, fatigue, inattention and not wearing a seat belt. In this modern day and age, the growing incidence of deaths and serious injuries on our roads due to inattention is very concerning. In road crash statistics terms, ‘inattention’ includes any crashes that involve distraction, inattention or mobile phone use. Tasmanian road crash statistics show that while the percentage of serious casualties due to inattention dropped markedly between 2008 and 2011, that number is again starting to rise. Since 2013 it has hovered around 15-17% of all serious casualties, and in 2017 it was still 13%. While speed and alcohol and drugs continue to be the main contributing factor in serious crashes, inattention is still a very concerning factor. Similarly, 18% of fatal crashes in 2017 were attributed to inattention, while 32% were due to speed and 29% due to alcohol and drugs. This has not changed significantly since 2013 when 20% of
fatal crashes were due to inattention. A recent survey of road users by Keep Australia Moving showed that while the dangers of mobile phone distraction while driving are well known, younger drivers in particular are still using their phones behind the wheel, and they’re less afraid of being caught. 59% of respondents thought that using a mobile phone while driving was more dangerous than speeding, while 57% thought it was on par with drink driving. Despite this, 22% of 16 to 24-year-old respondents said they use their phone most or every trip, and a staggering 62% were confident they wouldn’t be caught using their phones. In a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of this mindset, RACT conducts education programs at schools throughout the state that highlight the danger of using a mobile phone while driving. The Dangers of Distraction program puts students behind the wheel of a dual controlled Driver Training vehicle in a safe environment, where they are encouraged to use their phones while negotiating a course set out with witches’ hats. The number of witches’ hats casualties are astounding – and
IN OUR COMMUNITY
really hit home the message to young drivers when they think about what impact their actions have on others. Young Tasmanian race car driver Alex Peroni recently took part in the program at Campbell Town High School. ‘For me personally it was a bit of an eye opener doing the practical and seeing how the other students fared,’ he said. ‘If we imagine that the cones were people or cars it would be quite horrific.’ Assistant Principal at Hobart College, Wendy Irvine said while their students enjoyed the education program, it also hit home a serious message. ‘They were shocked to realise just what the consequences of using their phone while driving were,’ she said. ‘Students were genuinely surprised by the reality of trying to avoid hazards while on their phone and navigating a simple driving path. ‘This type of activity is far superior to other ways of trying to impart the message about the dangers of texting while driving to this age group. The students were keen to tell their friends about the experience.’ I think Wendy has highlighted one of the best ways we can raise awareness of this growing danger on our roads –
peer support and education. If we can encourage young people to share their experience of our program and how it highlighted to them the dangers of inattention, we can encourage a new generation of safer, smarter drivers. In addition, these younger drivers can pass on their knowledge to their peers and their families, even their parents. We are also pleased that the Tasmanian Government is reviewing the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS), with proposed changes including reducing peer passenger limits and a blanket ban on mobile phone use, including hands-free, for P1 drivers. If this is likely to reduce the number of inattention-related crashes on our roads, then we would be very supportive. This problem seems to be here to stay, at least in the short-term, so a combination of approaches including education, enforcement and programs for all drivers, with a specific target of young road users, is essential in increasing safety on our roads.

Time for long-term vision on congestion RACT is seeking a holistic, integrated vision for mobility in the Greater Hobart area, and needs your help.
R
ACT is increasingly getting reports from motorists about congestion in the Greater Hobart area – not just in peak commute times, but throughout the day. While a crash can cause absolute gridlock and frustration, the incremental increase in daily travel times to, from and around the city are of great concern. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures released on 20 September show that Tasmania’s overall population grew by 5300 to 526,700 in the year to 31 March 2018. ABS reports that this growth was due in part to Net Interstate Migration, with 2200 people moving to the state in the past year. While this data does not drill down into population growth in certain areas of Tasmania, the boom in housing and rental demand suggests that the Greater Hobart area has seen a significant part of this growth. If this growth continues, and it is predicted to do so, particularly with the State Government’s push to boost Tasmania’s population to 650,000 by 2050, we will see significant increased pressure on our transport infrastructure. RACT believes now is the time to act and form a 30-year vision for the future of

mobility in Greater Hobart, not just the city itself but the surrounding local government areas. Mobility covers all forms of getting from A to B – including vehicles, active (such as walking and cycling) and public transport – as well as taking into account future developments such as electric and autonomous technologies. RACT representatives have met with a range of public and private stakeholders to seek their views and ideas, and to date there isn’t one, holistic vision that takes into account all of the above. Which is why we are working to create a Greater Hobart Mobility Vision from 2020-2050. The University of Tasmania will partner with the RACT on the initiative, underpinned by a shared interest in fostering a conversation about how to deliver a future for greater Hobart that is liveable, dynamic and sustainable. ‘A single plan is critical. Completing individual projects without an overarching plan is not going to adequately address the problem in the long term,’ RACT Group Chief Executive Harvey Lennon says. ‘The final vision should ensure that not only congestion but safety of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are considered.

‘We believe the answer is out there, but we need to collect and combine the ideas of many into one vision.’ ‘We believe the answer is out there, but we need to collect and combine the ideas of many into one vision, which we can then lobby for on behalf of all Tasmanians.’ As part of the process, RACT called for submissions from stakeholders and members of the public, with ideas to address the growing congestion issue. These are being reviewed by RACT with the assistance of a panel of experts (see right for more details). Panelist Jason Byrne, a Professor of Human Geography and Planning from the University of Tasmania, said there was no ‘quick-fix’ solution to the congestion issue, and welcomed the RACT’s approach to an overarching, 30-year plan. ‘I think overall plans to tackle congestion need to be very wary of a silver bullet or magic, simple answer,’ he said. ‘There’s no panacea when it comes to traffic congestion, no simple solution. Instead we need to be looking at a toolbox of different options to respond to some of these drivers of congestion.’ The shortlisted submissions will be published online to allow public comment, and be presented and discussed at a public forum on 19 November.

FROM THE GROUP CEO Harvey Lennon
F
or some time we have been contacted by concerned motorists raising the issue of congestion, particularly on the main arterial routes into and out of Hobart city. This is why we are forming a vision for the future of travel in the Greater Hobart area – from 2020 to 2050. The current infrastructure and public transport options are not meeting our needs, and with predicted increases in the Greater Hobart population, we expect this will continue to worsen until changes are made. During the past 50 years, a lot has been done to improve vehicle movements on the arterial routes into the city, but little has changed in terms of mobility within the Hobart CBD. In addition, during that same time
period, a lot has changed in terms of the social fabric of our community. This includes an increase in the number of vehicles per household, higher population and housing density in the Greater Hobart area, a change in expectations and flexibility around work and lifestyle, and more extracurricular opportunities for children – all of which influence the transport needs of our community. Infrastructure Tasmania has listed several long-term upgrades in its Project Pipeline that address certain areas. However, while there have been a lot of smaller proposals put forward, to date we have not seen a single, comprehensive and cohesive plan for the future of mobility in Greater Hobart. Southern Tasmania needs a longterm vision that takes into account social, economic, infrastructure, urban planning and public and active transport opportunities and impacts. We also need to consider electric and autonomous vehicle technology, and the growing call for more sustainability through tighter controls on vehicle emissions. We need the local councils in Greater Hobart to work together with the State Government to address the issue as a whole.
In addition, there is a range of private stakeholders whose future developments will impact on travel to, from and around the city, and they also need to be engaged in the planning phase. The final vision should ensure that not only congestion, but also the safety, of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists is considered. Without a cohesive plan, we will continue to have piecemeal, short-term fixes that just move congestion from one location to another and bring no overall benefit to the community of Greater Hobart into the future. Importantly, the University of Tasmania will partner with the RACT on the initiative, underpinned by a shared interest in fostering a conversation about how to deliver a future for Greater Hobart that is liveable, dynamic and sustainable. The Greater Hobart Mobility Vision is just one of several programs we are working on regarding mobility throughout the state. We will provide updates on programs in the north and north-west as we have more detail. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR VISION, GO TO HOBARTVISION.RACT.COM.AU

or people with limited mobility, filling up their vehicle with fuel can be a challenging process. As petrol stations increasingly move towards full self-service, we take a look at how the larger brands in Tasmania are addressing this issue. We contacted the four major brands’ Australian parent companies, asking what services they offer to assist those with limited mobility. Please note these responses apply to company-owned sites only – independently owned sites may have different services on offer. Twelve Caltex sites in Tasmania offer a ‘honk for assistance’ service to refuel or check tyres. Company-owned Caltex sites at Kings Meadows, Launceston and Bellerive also have full driveway
service. In addition, Caltex Australia’s app has a new FuelPay option that allows customers to pay without leaving their vehicle. The nearest Caltex site can be located via the app or caltex.com.au. BP says where they have two or more staff members on site, they can assist at the petrol pump and facilitate a cash payment. This is not possible during overnight operational hours as there are strict procedures in place to ensure staff safety. Customers can also pay from their car with the fuel payment app BPme. Journeys has made contact with Shell Australia and United Petroleum and are awaiting their responses. We will endeavour to publish them in a future issue of the magazine.

The RACT Community Fund has supported more than 200 community groups around Tasmania since its inception. We are extremely proud to be able to help these groups successfully implement their community-building projects and see local people come together to make a difference. Whether it’s something small like replacing a playgroup’s art and craft supplies, or something slightly larger like running field days to help restore a remote community’s wharf area, every amount has helped make an impact. Now coming up to its 23rd round, the fund is still going strong and we are very pleased to open applications to local community groups and clubs, for a period of three weeks from 6 October 2018. YOUR VIEWS Is your airbag safe?
A year ago the passenger side airbag in my 2010 Subaru Outback was replaced as part of the Takata airbag recall program. There is now a nationwide advertising campaign to recall a vast number of affected vehicles. The information provided at the time of my replacement, and as part of the recall program, is misleading. The replacement airbag I received was a new copy of the dangerous unit. The dangerous unit is supposedly safe early in its life but becomes dangerous after about six years. Subaru has informed me that a second replacement of a redesigned unit will be available after December 2019 for vehicles that have the first replacement fitted. Later models are not yet being recalled but will have the redesigned unit replaced after March 2019. None of this was told me at the first replacement, or made clear in the advertising campaign. We are told that a car without the first replacement should not be driven. This suggests that those cars are un-roadworthy. Are state road authorities withdrawing registration of such vehicles? If not, why not? Are these vehicles being identified on the finance-checking website for alerts to prospective car buyers? If the state road authorities are serious about safety, they should be taking these actions. Failures of design and testing on the part of component and assembly manufacturers have caused this world-wide chaos. The wish by manufacturers and authorities to minimise costs and concerns may lead to failure to replace all affected vehicles. Some people may believe the problems in their cars have been fixed when they have not. Inadequate action may lead to a second wave of deaths. Iain Robertson, Norwood
Takata Alpha type airbags have been shown to present a significant safety risk if deployed and the ACCC, the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and the Tasmanian Department of State Growth have issued advice to not drive vehicles fitted with the Alpha product and immediately arrange for their free replacement airbag. The Department of State Growth has been actively contacting affected owners to ensure they make arrangements to have their airbag replaced as part of this compulsory recall. We recognise that people lead busy lives, but continuing to drive a car fitted with these Takata Alpha type airbags just isn’t worth the risk. All affected owners of vehicles fitted with Alpha type airbags were sent Warning of Imminent Suspension letters by registered post in the first week of August, or directly contacted by the department by phone. Suspension Notices are now being issued, giving vehicle owners a further three weeks to act before the vehicle’s registration will be suspended. While the majority of affected owners have been proactive in having their faulty airbags replaced, at the second week of September 2018 there were still around 70 affected vehicles registered to drive on Tasmanian roads that had not been fixed. Anyone that has received and not acted on a Warning of Imminent Suspension letter or Suspension Notice should contact the department on 03 6166 4879 or vru@stategrowth.tas.gov.au

It should be noted that owners of affected vehicles that have been unregistered for greater than 90 days have not been contacted as these vehicles already cannot be driven on Tasmanian roads, but if such a vehicle is to be registered the owner should check if an Alpha airbag is fitted and if so get their free replacement. Anyone unsure if their vehicle is still fitted with Takata Alpha type airbags should check the ACCC Product Safety website, the FCAI’s Is my airbag safe? website or contact the vehicle manufacturer. Clearing congestion
I’ve been driving cars and riding motorcycles and scooters in Melbourne traffic all my adult life. I’m on the City of Melbourne’s Motorcycle Committee. Melbourne’s traffic congestion is very bad and getting worse. Hobart seems to be making similar mistakes. Seventy percent of cars carry just one person. Some are on necessary trips, many are not. It is critically important to change behaviour so people in single-occupant cars making unnecessary trips opt for a more efficient way to get from A to B. They need alternatives. ‘Clearing the congestion’ in the June/July Journeys magazine listed trains, buses, fast ferries, road treatments and pedestrians underpasses as ways with potential to reduce traffic congestion in and around Hobart. No mention of two-wheelers. Bicycles, motorcycles and scooters can help to significantly reduce congestion and pollution. This will become more evident as the population grows and electric bikes become mainstream. An area that needs urgent review is motorcycle parking in Hobart. There’s not enough of it. Riders are forced to take car spaces which does not promote harmony and some onstreet bike parking is downright dangerous. Damien Codognotto, Howrah

Highway upgrades welcomed
I would like to commend the State Government on the job they have been doing on the Midland Highway. I have been travelling up and down the Highway frequently for the past 20 years and it used to be difficult at times to find a safe place to overtake, but now it is brilliant with all the extra overtaking lanes. Some slower drivers do speed up when they come to an overtaking lane and I have never been able to understand why, unless they just don’t like being overtaken. The law is that you must move to the left unless you are actually overtaking or both lanes are full with heavy traffic. If I have a driver behind me who obviously wants to travel faster I would rather have them pass me and be out of the way. Sometimes I feel like travelling at a leisurely speed, but I make sure I don’t hold others up, and when I come to an overtaking lane or safe place to pull over I even slow down to make sure all the cars get past me. I think that if all road users were a little more helpful to their fellow drivers there would be a lot less accidents and happier drivers and passengers.
Headlight concerns
After spending four months travelling interstate, it became very obvious that I was back in Tasmania. How? Headlights – or rather, the lack of them. The number of vehicles (of all classes) with only one headlight (and sometimes none) is staggering. There were cars, buses and trucks of all sizes, not just noticeable at night but of those who travel with lights on during daylight. Drivers/owners apparently don’t bother checking to see if all lights are working. In Tasmania’s misty and foggy nights and winding roads, lights are very important. Price for replacement should not enter into it – lights are an essential safety item. I was under the impression that a blown headlight could render a vehicle unroadworthy. Maybe the police should have a crackdown on lights as a standard, like large RBT checks. Michael Moon, Port Huon

asmania’s best young artists will exhibit their work at galleries in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie as part of the prestigious 2018 RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize. The Portraiture Prize invites Tasmanian artists aged 30 years and younger to produce a portrait of a living Tasmanian who is important to them. Every year the entries are vibrant and diverse, with work spanning across a range of mediums including painting, drawing, printing, photography, videography and mixed media. Each piece of work tells an extraordinary Tasmanian story and showcases the wealth of emerging artistic talent our state has to offer. This year’s major winner will receive a trip for two to the Archibald Prize

The winners will be announced on 5 October 2018 with the 35 works open for public viewing at the Long Gallery in Hobart from 6 – 21 October. The exhibition will then move to Sawtooth ARI in Launceston between 3 – 24 November before coming to a close at the Makers’ Workshop in Burnie from 30 November – 27 January. Members of the public who visit one of the exhibitions in Hobart, Launceston or Burnie or the Tasmanian Portraiture Prize website can go into the draw to win a travel voucher by voting for their favourite shortlisted portraits in the People’s Choice category – another valuable way to show your support for our Tasmanian talent.

RACT 2017-18 YEAR IN REVIEW
The RACT has achieved so much in the past 12 months. We have focused on our strategic direction of enhancing the lives of every Tasmanian and continuing to grow as a strong and sustainable organisation into the future.
D
uring the 2017-18 financial year, the organisation built upon its five-year strategic plan, which sets out the strategic goals of the organisation, including membership, customer service, member value, financial performance, brand strength and the performance and health and safety of our people. This year we met, and in many instances exceeded, our strategic goals, including: • A $1 million increase in the value we return to our members through our Royal Rewards program to $6.4 million. • Increases in Group revenues by 3.3% and after-tax profit of 6.8%. • We reached 190,000 members by the end of the financial year.
We would like to thank our Board Directors for their significant contribution to the strategic future of the organisation; the RACT leadership team for their drive to achieve our goals; and all of our staff for their hard work and commitment – without them we would not be able to achieve such great things. 18

TOURISM DEVELOPMENTS Two of the most high-profile achievements for the year were the opening of our new Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge and the launch of our new hybrid vessel Spirit of the Wild for Gordon River Cruises. The Coastal Pavilions at Freycinet Lodge are designed to attract new markets to the east coast of Tasmania – visitors who want an intimate, engaging experience in the wilderness while still enjoying a little luxury. These nine new accommodation spaces are certainly achieving that objective, with high levels of occupancy in what is traditionally a low period of visitation in Tasmania, as well as a large amount of interest from national and international travel and lifestyle media. Our new Gordon River Cruises vessel Spirit of the Wild also set a bold new direction for the organisation, with its hybrid propulsion design being the first for a vessel of its size and kind in the Southern Hemisphere. We believe that these two major projects, along with other upgrades across our Destinations properties, will build a strong and robust tourism business for the organisation to ensure our sustainability into the future.
RACT 2017-18 YEAR IN REVIEW
CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Our new Coastal Pavilions and Spirit of the Wild vessel were successfully launched; the RoadSafe program for grade three and four students was introduced; and our roadside systems were upgraded to better serve our members.
ADVOCACY The organisation lobbied on behalf of our members for the major political parties to pledge infrastructure and road safety funding as part of their State Election commitments. A significant amount of funding was promised and allocated in the State Budget for road safety upgrades across the state, as well as measures to address congestion on our roads and improve tourist road infrastructure. The introduction of new Fuel Price Boards legislation in May was another achievement from our advocacy efforts. Sites can now only display the non-discounted price for fuel, which is one of the measures we have been calling for in an effort to increase competition and reduce the cost of motoring. We also conducted a Regional Advisory Committee Forum at Cradle Mountain Hotel in September. The forum featured subject matter experts presenting and facilitating workshops on topics such as cyclists, changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme, and the regional road safety priorities and concerns of our members.
SERVING OUR MEMBERS In an effort to better serve our members, we conducted upgrades to our systems for Roadside Assistance callouts as well as our Call Centre communications technology. We have also introduced online bookings for Driver Training, as well as showing members how much they have saved each year through our Royal Rewards program. In addition, the Board signed off on a new Digital Strategy, which will enhance the
way we communicate with and serve our members and will be rolled out in FY19. Another improvement to our customer service was the opening of the new Devonport Branch in Rooke Street Mall, which provides a better space for both our members and staff to interact. These upgrades, as well as continued work by our customer service teams on their performance, resulted in an increase in our Net Promotor Score (NPS) from 77% in FY17 to 79% in FY18. The NPS measures our customer service performance and is calculated from surveys filled out by members and customers who interact with the business.
IN OUR COMMUNITY One of the biggest ways we support Tasmanians is our sponsorships and community engagement programs. Some of our major sponsorships for the year included the arts community through the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Theatre Royal and the Tasmanian Portraiture Prize. We also sponsored a variety of sports including Australian Rules football, netball, cricket, athletics and basketball. Our community program has supported a variety of organisations through our Community Fund, as well as charities through our Community Act of Royalty, through which our members get to choose where the money is allocated. We also conducted a range of education activities, including our new RoadSafe online program, which was created to increase road safety awareness for grade three and four students across the state. Group revenues increased 3.3%, and profit after tax by 6.8% in the 2017-18 financial year, with sound contribution from all major business lines. Continued growth in membership numbers underpinned FY18 motoring and subscription revenues. Despite constrained availability during major construction works at Freycinet, Destinations tourism revenues increased 2.6% for the year. The acquisition of the Destinations Property Unit Trust also lifted the tourism bottom line. Strong growth in insurance sales, particularly from car insurance, lifted the value of commissions received in FY18. The Group’s investment in RACT Insurance Pty Ltd performed strongly again in FY18. Despite a significant Hobart flood event in May 2018, which was covered under the reinsurance program, the solid growth in the insurance book lifted the RACT Insurance result. Journeys

RACT’s Travel business produced another sound result; and RACT Auto Glass Pty Ltd and RACT AutoServe Pty Ltd also had improved trading results. Club Tas. Holdings Pty Ltd was divested early in FY18. Total assets primarily increased as a result of acquisition of the remaining units in the Destinations Property Unit Trust. On acquisition, the Trust’s assets (mainly land and buildings) and liabilities (mainly bank borrowings) were consolidated into the Group’s balance sheet. Total assets also increased during the year as a result of the significant investments in the tourism business, with new accommodation facilities constructed at Freycinet Lodge, and a new purpose-built vessel for Gordon River Cruises.

deemed elected to), or appointed to fill a casual vacancy within, the Board and who are subject to re-election by members in accordance with this Constitution at the end of their term. Explanation: The Board believes that the Club should continue to allow its members to stand for election to the Board with minimal restrictions. In order to ensure that the Board has the required skills, given the open nature of its Board elections, it is therefore prudent to allow the Board to appoint additional directors to the Board that will not require election by members in order to fill any skill gaps that may arise. Where the need arises to make use of this power, the Board will disclose the reason for doing so on appointment and within the Club’s Annual Report. While the Member Elected Directors provide a sufficiently wide skill base, the Board will not appoint additional directors. The Board believes that it would be inefficient to have 15 directors and therefore the number of Member Elected Directors needs to be reduced to accommodate potential Board Appointed Directors. ualification for Directors Q That Clause 12.3 be replaced with the following provisions such that, in addition to requiring that a nominee for election to the Board is to have been a member for at least one year, it is also a requirement that they not hold or be a candidate for any elected office of state, federal or local government: 12.3 Qualification for Directors Subject to Clause 12.6, i) to be eligible to become a Member Elected Director, the nominee for election must be a financial Member of the Club of a class eligible to vote for at least one (1) year immediately prior to his/her nomination; and ii) no Member: a) who holds an elected state, federal or local government position or office; or b) is a candidate for an elected state, federal or local government position or office, shall be eligible to stand for election, or be appointed as a Director or to continue to serve as a Director. Provision 12.3(i) does not apply to a person appointed to fill a casual vacancy as referred to in Clause 12.8 of the Constitution. Explanation: The Board believes that in order for the Club to successfully advocate on behalf of its Members, it is important that the Club be considered independent and free from political association. To this end, the Board therefore believes it is reasonable to restrict elected members of government from standing for election to the Board and for directors of the Club from standing for government office. erm and Retirement of Member Elected Directors T That Clause 12.4 be replaced with the following provisions such that Directors may elect to stand for re-election earlier than the expiry of their term: 12.4 Term and Retirement of Member Elected Directors Each Member Elected Director shall hold office for 3 years, or until the next Annual General Meeting following the expiry of his or her 3 year term, and at each Annual General Meeting the Member Elected Directors whose term is due to expire, and any Member Elected Director who elect to stand for re-election prior to the expiry of their 3 year term, shall retire. Explanation: In order to manage the orderly transition from 12 to 9 Member Elected Directors it may be required that a Director stand for re-election earlier than the expiry of their term.

Committees That certain sub-clauses within Clause 17 be replaced by the following provisions such that Advisory Committees may be appointed and managed by a Committee of the Board in addition to the Board itself: 17.2 Advisory Committees The Board and/or any of its Committees shall have the power to appoint Advisory Committees and Regional Advisory Committees for such purposes as they shall deem necessary. 17.3 (Intentionally left blank). 17.4 Area of Operation The Board and/or any of its Committees may define the areas of operation and the powers and obligations of Advisory Committees it has appointed. 17.8 Appointment of Other Members The Board shall have power to appoint any other members to any Committee but, other than in the case of Advisory Committees, such members shall have no voting rights nor shall they be counted in any quorum. 17.9 Dissolution of Committee The Board and/or any of its Committees may dissolve any of its Committees or terminate the appointment of any member of its Committees. 17.10 Appointment of Members At the first meeting of the Board, or where applicable any of its Committees, after the Annual General Meeting in each year, the Board and/or its Committees shall appoint the members of each of its Committees for the ensuing year. Any casual vacancy may be filled by the Board or appointing Committee. 17.11 Re-Appointment Retiring members of Committees may be re-appointed and, except where otherwise provided in this Constitution, the Chairperson shall nominate the Chairperson of each Committee. Explanation: In order to increase flexibility in its Committee structures, the Board believes it would be beneficial for its Committees to be able to appoint advisory committees with a membership outside of Directors. Definitions and Interpretations That unused definitions be deleted, incorrect references to defined terms be amended and reference to a council be removed from definitions. Explanation: The Board believes it is appropriate to ensure that the Constitution as a document is kept up to date. NOTE: A copy of the Constitution with the above proposed changes tracked is available on our website or by contacting the Company Secretary at the address below or via companysecretary@ract.com.au and will be made available at the meeting. 5. GET READY TO HIT THE ROAD
A hearing test can easily identify issues before they become a major problem.
ith the warmer weather upon us, many Tasmanians are planning to get out and about, whether it be a day trip, a weekend away or a longer journey. Basic preparations such as checking the vehicle’s fuel, oil, battery and water levels, tyre treads and pressures, windscreen wiper blades and that the lights are working are second nature to many experienced motorists. However, have you had your hearing checked lately? Hearing loss can creep up on you, and yet it can have significant impact on your driving ability, and your enjoyment of hitting the road. It is important to be able to hear emergency sirens/sounds as well as in-car sounds like the indicator, which is the most
common thing people with hearing loss don’t hear well. A simple hearing check can make sure you’re safe to enjoy your road trip. ‘If you’re planning a trip away and you have hearing aids, it’s important to give them a ‘service and tune’ before you go and make sure you take your cleaning kit and plenty of spare batteries,’ Edgar Rincon, Australian Hearing Manager, southern Tasmania, said. ‘Planning a trip is exciting, but when you have a hearing loss it can feel as if there are extra hurdles to jump. While there are a few more logistics, you shouldn’t let it dissuade you from going. ‘Most countries will have hearing aid clinics that stock the brands you’re used to. Also, if necessary, you’ll be able to get help from the closest audiologist.’
W
It’s your hearing. Let us help you take care of it. Hearing important sounds like indicators or emergency sirens when you’re driving can help you stay safe. It’s not always easy to spot changes in your hearing so it’s a good idea to make a hearing check part of your regular health routine. Keep your hearing in top shape and enjoy the open road!

s it a mini CX-9 or a maxi CX-5? That’s the question I was asking myself after my first experience with the all-new CX-8. In reality it’s a little bit of both. It shares the longer wheelbase of the CX-9 and of course gets seven seats, but it shares a similar width to the CX-5, and also shares its diesel drivetrain. Originally developed as a Japanese-only vehicle, a gap in the Australian Mazda range for a seven-seat diesel SUV saw Mazda Australia plead its case to head office, which gave the green light to bring it to Australia to fill the void in the seven-seat diesel SUV segment offered by competitors. The 2.2L turbo diesel powertrain mated to Mazda’s six-speed auto develops 140kW and a meaty 450Nm from 2000rpm. Plenty of work has been done on noise suppression from both the engine and road noise, with additional damping material used across the vehicle. The official combined consumption figure is 5.7L/100km for the FWD, with the AWD slightly higher at 6.0L/100km. As always, real-world will be higher than these numbers. Braked tow capacity is 2000kg, with the diesel engine more than capable of hauling that weight. 34

Space in the all-important third row is slightly less in terms of both leg space and width when compared to the CX-9, but it will still seat children comfortably. Larger teenagers and adults will find the confines a little tight for anything other than short trips. First and second row occupants are well catered for in legroom, although three adults across the second row is a little tight. On the road it doesn’t feel as resolved as either the CX-5 or 9, which might relate to its wheelbase and track proportions. A Japanese domestic suspension tune might also contribute to this. On a reasonable country drive it felt to have more body roll and less rear suspension control than either of the other two. It just felt softer than a usual Mazda ride. Safety is well taken care of in both models with plenty of advanced driver assistance systems including low and high-speed AEB systems, with the low-speed system also mitigating reversing collisions, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, high beam control, driver attention alert and intelligent speed assistance.

‘Is it a mini CX-9 or a maxi CX-5? That’s the question I was asking myself after my first experience with the all-new CX-8.’
This speed assistance is a speed-limiting system that works in conjunction with the traffic sign recognition system to help stop drivers unintentionally exceeding speed limits. Asaki adds a 360-degree camera and adaptive LED headlights. ANCAP has awarded a 2018 five-star crash rating. It appears to me there’s a model missing from the range. The entry Sport FWD model has a drive-away price of a little over $46,700, the AWD Sport is just under $51,000, but then there’s a $15,500 leap to the range-topping Asaki with nothing in the middle. Yes, the Asaki gets everything that you could ever think of, but I’m sure the Mazda dealers would have liked something in the mid-range and price. Mazda has also joined a growing troupe of manufacturers to offer a five-year warranty to go with their capped-price servicing offer. FINANCE IT WITH US! ‘Hyundai’s Australian ride and handling team have also waved their wand to incrementally improve what was already a pretty decent drive.’

H
yundai’s popular Tucson recently received a mid-life upgrade to keep pace in the ultracompetitive mid-size SUV category, but did they get it right? Externally, the front and rear of the Tucson got the facelift treatment. A newly designed grill, bumper and headlight signature are the key features up front. The rear tailgate, lights and bumper also came in for some treatment just to ensure the overall styling remains fresh. However, the remainder of the vehicle will look familiar. The range has changed slightly, with the entry-level ‘Go’ kicking things off, followed by Active X, Elite and topping out with Highlander. Drivetrains are familiar with a 2.0L GDI petrol starting things off with either a six-speed manual or auto option in either Go or Active X. This combination is only available in 2WD. The 2.0L diesel is now coupled with a new eight-speed auto and available in AWD form only. Similarly the 1.6 turbo petrol is mated to a seven-speed direct-shift auto transmission with AWD only. The interior has come in for the biggest changes. The now familiar tablet design for infotainment has arrived in the Tucson. A 7” screen in the Go also includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto, which you’ll need as in-built navigation doesn’t kick in until the next model up. Full Bluetooth connectivity and reversing camera also feature. Active X gains 17” alloys, tyre pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, and an 8” touchscreen with navigation including 10 years of map updates providing you get your Tucson serviced at a Hyundai dealer. It also features an eight-speaker sound system with subwoofer, leather seats, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar, heated and folding exterior mirrors, with front and rear USB power outlets. 36

Elite is available with all three engine options in auto only. As with the Go and Active X, the 2.0L GDI is FWD only. The Elite moves up to 18” alloys, a fully powered multiadjustable driver’s seat, smart key entry and push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, privacy glass and rear park assist. The top of the range Highlander is an AWD-only affair fitted with either the turbo petrol or diesel drivetrain option. It comes equipped with 19” alloys, LED head and tail-lights, front park assist, sunroof, power passenger seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, powered tailgate, 4.2” colour LCD screen in the dash and wireless phone charging. All SmartSense safety features come standard on Elite and Highlander variants. After experiencing each drivetrain on launch, the 2.0L turbo diesel was the pick. Effortless torque mated to the new slick-shifting eight-speed auto made both highway cruising and hill climbing a breeze. While there is a little diesel clatter noticeable at lower speeds, it’s generally unobtrusive once on the highway. Hyundai’s Australian ride and handling team have also waved their wand to incrementally improve what was already a pretty decent drive. I was disappointed that Hyundai went for an entry level price point for the base spec Go manual (I’m sure some people buy these ones, although I’ve never seen one) and in the process didn’t include advanced safety systems like autonomous emergency braking, smart cruise control, blind spot warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention warning, which will add another $2200 to the purchase price. The same situation applies to the Active X, and in both cases the optional ‘Smartsense’ safety pack is only available with auto models. While a base level model with no options might see you on the road for around $28,000, if you want a base model Go in auto with the latest safety equipment, expect to spend up to another $8000.

here was a time not so long ago when an affordable large car with good handling and plenty of power was the domain of Aussie-built Commodores or Falcons. However, with the demise of the Australian vehicle manufacturing industry, a new, somewhat unexpected, player has entered that segment with a rush. If you don’t immediately link a large rear-wheel drive performance car with Kia, you might not be on your own, but you may have to change your views as the Stinger GT is all of that and more, filling the void left when 60 years of Australian manufacturing ended late last year. Lurking under the bonnet of the range-topping Stinger GT is a hugely powerful 3.3L V6 twin-turbo mill delivering 272kW and 510Nm of grunt, coupled to Kia’s in-house built eight-speed auto, which when using its launch control system is enough to propel you from 0-100km/h in a touch under five seconds. The official combined fuel economy is listed at 10.2L/100km, but don’t expect that if your right foot is a little heavy. On the positive side, you only need to use 91RON regular unleaded fuel. If looks are important, then Stinger delivers. The number of people who commented on the styling of the Stinger was amazing. At each corner are gleaming 19” alloy wheels staggered with 30mm of extra tyre on the rear. High-performance Brembo brakes in bright red behind each alloy, with guard and bonnet vents, add a look of intent. As a point-to-point car, the Stinger GT probably isn’t going to engage you like a lesser powered hot hatch. Front-end turn-in and grip is exceptional, steering feel is reasonable and somewhat typical of the latest electric power assisted systems, but for me on tight wet roads in Tassie’s south-west, the rear end felt a touch nervous. Kia Australia engineers have fettled with the suspension, as they do with almost all their Australian released products, to make
them more adaptable to our road conditions. The GT on test has adjustable adaptive dampers controlled via drive mode select which includes smart, Eco, Comfort Sport and Custom modes. While it was just a flick of the knob to change between settings, it annoyed me a little that it defaulted to the base setting every time it was switched off. Inside the GT is the complete package. Nappa leather sport seats come in either red or black with eight-way electric adjustment for both front occupants. Both also feature heating and ventilation, and the driver’s seat has two memory settings and automatically moves rearward for easy access. Because of the swoopy coupé-like design, rear passenger entry and seating can be a bit restrictive for taller people. Additionally, while the Stinger is designed to carry five passengers, the shape of the rear seats means the centre rear position might not be the most comfortable place to spend a long trip. An extensive range of passive and active safety features include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, driver attention alert, front and rear parking sensors with a 360-degree camera view, dynamic bending LED headlights, high beam assist, colour head-up display and the list goes on. There is an 8” touchscreen for the infotainment system, a 15-speaker harman/kardon sound system with a 7” TFT LCD instrument display. Multiple USB ports, 12v power outlets and a wireless phone charge pad also feature as standard. Bluetooth connectivity, Apple and Android compatibility, standard navigation and a flat-bottomed, leather appointed multi-button steering wheel complete the ergonomic picture. While it may be a little gimmicky, there’s also a GT interface that provides information on oil temperature, torque and boost, g-force and lap times.
There’s a whole lot to like about the Stinger GT. The engine is an absolute beast, the transmission gets the job done but can be a little slow changing at times, and while looks are always subjective, for me it’s one of the best designs for this type of car I’ve seen recently. If it has a weak spot, it’s probably the handling and suspension. For me it just lacked that bit of balance you would get from a European marque, and the ride was only just livable on the softest setting. I’m sure the Kia engineers are working away on a series two update right now. At a touch over $65,000 drive away, the Stinger GT is less than half the cost of a similarly specified European rival, but in terms of outright performance it won’t be left too far behind. You also get Kia’s industry leading seven-year warranty. Service intervals are a bit shorter than normal at 12 months or 10,000km; however, fixed-price servicing costs for five years/50,000km ownership are a little over $2000, which is exceptionally reasonable. HOW MUCH DOES YOUR VEHICLE COST?
T
he results from the RACT Vehicle Operating Costs survey for 2018 are in and have found the average cost of owning a car in Tasmania has risen by 3% to more than $217 per week. To help all Tasmanians find the most economical car for them, RACT conducts an annual Vehicle Operating Costs survey that assesses the cost of 138 vehicles in 14 categories. It is based on a five-year ownership where the car is driven an average of 12,000km a year. The survey gives new car buyers everything they need to know before they step into the showroom. Costs such as rising fuel prices, servicing, registration and insurance can significantly increase the cost of owning a vehicle. The survey found that some of the most cost-effective vehicles included the Mitsubishi Mirage ES at $105.37 per week, the Suzuki Swift GL Hatchback at $109.60 per week, the Kia Cerato S 5d Hatchback at $123.68 per week and the Suzuki Vitara RT-S at $142.84 per week. 40

CHOOSE SAFETY
W
ith vehicle safety constantly improving, vehicle buyers should make safety their top priority. That’s the advice of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). ANCAP has produced an advertising campaign, supported by the Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC) and RACT. RSAC Chair Garry Bailey said about 20% – 82,000 of Tasmania’s registered vehicles – were more than 18 years old. The average age of a Tasmanian car is 12.8 years. The average age of vehicles in fatal or serious injury crashes is 13 years. ‘The risk of fatality in a car made before 2000 is four times more likely than a newer car,’ Mr Bailey said. ‘The safer the vehicle, the more help a driver will have avoiding a crash and the more protection a driver will have.’
The campaign’s television commercial shows what happens when two Toyota Corollas – one 1998, the other 2015 – crash head-on at 64km/h. The older car is badly damaged. Viewers are left to consider the fate of the driver who is unlikely to have survived. The damage to the newer car is nowhere near that of the older one. ‘Vehicle safety features have come a long way in the past decade. Features such as electronic stability control, automatic emergency braking and curtain airbags can help you either avoid a crash, or if one happens, can lessen the impact. ‘Most people aren’t able to buy a new car, but they can buy the safest car within their budget,’ Mr Bailey said. ‘Being in the safest car increases the chances of surviving a crash. Choose a minimum 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Choose safety.’

that followed, RACT Insurance received double its usual call volume, with claims ranging from vehicle damage to storm water run-off, flash flooding, fallen trees and other storm damage. On 13 and 14 June, insurance forums were attended to help answer any questions and concerns our customers had. While many claims have already been settled, we are still working hard to settle all remaining claims. The scale of the event has meant that to meet demand, we have needed to secure assessing and trade resources from the mainland. We continue to appreciate your patience as we continue to work through these last remaining claims. These events are a timely reminder to ensure your insurance is in place and adequate for your needs. Similarly, being prepared for storms - for advice please visit ses.tas.gov.au
“Thank you for providing such a professional person to project manage our claim and for the great service. I would recommend both the RACT and Dean Parker for their insurance needs. I am reassured that changing to the RACT was an excellent decision on my part. Thanks again.” Tereza of Cygnet

hen I think Holden, the first thing that comes to mind is racing cars, and years spent with the curtains drawn on a beautiful spring day while we watched the likes of Peter Brock battle it out lap after lap around Mt Panorama. (To be fair, it may have only been one year, I don’t really recall. But it sticks in my mind as one of the few days my mother didn’t send us all outside to ‘enjoy the sunshine!’) So when I was asked to test drive the new Holden Commodore, I was a little apprehensive of what was to come. Funnily enough, it was a beautiful first day of spring when we went to pick up the vehicle. Walking into the showroom, I was faced with gleaming streamlined utes, overwhelmingly large Sport Cats, and an unassuming line-up of sedans that sat quietly, waiting to be noticed. And notice I did. Sleek styling, 18” wheels, twin rear exhaust and smooth, modern lines – the Commodore was about as far from my mind’s eye as you could get. And yet, this was going to be our vehicle for the weekend. To say I was a little excited would be an understatement. This is the first version of the German-built Commodore, and its European influence shows. The first thing that jumped out at me was the liftback. This takes the sedan to a whole new level of stylish, giving it a streamlined appearance that makes it more modern and appealing. Underneath the liftback is the biggest boot space I have seen on a sedan (I could easily fit a couple of kids in there – not that I would, but I could!). The interior of the cabin is just as impressive, while still being understated, as if to say ‘well yes, what else did you expect?’ The designers have certainly thought of everything – plenty of leg room front and back, touches of leather detail, and an easy-to-navigate layout on the dash. 46

‘It was out on the open road that the Commodore really came into its own. The time Holden has put into tweaking the handling for Australian conditions shows.’ But let’s face it, we didn’t come here to admire the aesthetics. We wanted to know about the drive. Our dealer put a lot of thought into which model to lend us. Being a family of four with younger children, he chose the RS model, a 2.0L Turbo with nine-speed auto, but amped it up with the optional 3.6L V6 with adaptive all-wheel drive. If you do any amount of driving in Tasmania, I think the comfort and security of all-wheel drive on our roads in our conditions is almost essential. As we hit the road, the European styling gives way to true Aussie performance. In the city, we had the benefit of all of the safety features you would expect in a modern vehicle, including forward collision alert, following distance indicator and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection. But it was out on the open road that the Commodore really came into its own. The time Holden has put into tweaking the handling for Australian conditions shows. Heading up the east coast, the lightly weighted steering handled the corners with ease, and I felt very comfortable and stable even on the trickiest sections.

This left me well able to admire the scenery as we passed. The eastern coastline of Tasmania is beautiful at this time of year, with the vineyards just starting to come back to life and a general feeling of the pending summer in the air. While it was still a little chilly, the clear skies allowed spectacular views of the Freycinet Peninsula as we approached it – a vista that for me never ceases to illicit awe. The pink granite of the Hazards Mountains provides the backdrop, offset by the turquoise waters lapping the white sandy beaches, but for me it is the quality of the light that brings it all together. Somehow everything seems brighter at Freycinet, and yet calmer and more soothing. And in the centre of all this lies Freycinet Lodge. I have some wonderful memories of this place from my early career, but the recent refurbishment has taken it to a whole new level. It’s hard to believe that our accommodation, which was the newly opened Mountain Terrace family rooms, actually used to be the site of a tennis court. Who would want to play tennis when there is a magnificent National Park on your doorstep to explore? Case in point, it has now been removed to make way for stylish, yet understated, rooms that capture glimpses of the Hazards Mountains through their floor-to-ceiling windows. Our two-room family set-up was carefully thought out – the kids’ room up the back, leaving the parents’ ‘retreat’ open to the living area, which is ideal once the little ones are safely in the land of nod. The furnishings have also been well-chosen, with flexible options to suit both families and couples. The main Lodge building has also undergone a physical transformation, but the same feeling remains – friendly people and a welcoming atmosphere that encourage you to relax and enjoy the open spaces overlooking Great Oyster Bay.
CLOCKWISE FROM OPPOSITE PAGE: The mountain Terrace Rooms at Freycinet Lodge from outside; and inside; the new Holden Commodore outside the new Mountain Terrace rooms; looking over Wineglass Bay.
Richardson’s Bistro was busy when we walked in for dinner, but we were well looked after, and our meals were fresh and delicious. Ideally set up for children, there were many families feeling comfortable in the no-fuss, unpretentious atmosphere. Breakfast in the Bay Restaurant was a similar affair, with both my boys happily declaring it the ‘best breakfast ever’, in spite of the fact that they ate exactly the same as they would at home – cereal. It must have been the hot chocolates and the friendly wait staff that took it to such lofty status. We couldn’t be at Freycinet without doing the Wineglass Bay walk, which has improved significantly since my last visit. A lot of work has been done to improve the track and lessen the impact on the surrounding environment, and clever seating and rest spots along the way made it an all-round pleasant experience. While we spent little time at the top due to a cutting icy breeze, it was great to share the experience as a family. I cannot wrap up the story of our journey without mentioning our delicious Father’s Day lunch at Saltshaker Restaurant and Café in Swansea, which was packed with people but we still received friendly, genuine service. The view overlooking the water and the Hazards gave us a one last glimpse and farewell before the final leg home. My last word on the Commodore would be if you’re looking for a car that drives well on Tasmanian roads in our ever-changing weather conditions, has loads of safety features (and a five-star ANCAP safety rating) and looks extremely stylish, then you should give the RS a go. I would definitely get the V6 version. While it’s a little heavier on fuel, it more than makes up for this in performance. From $42,490 drive away, it blows away the European brands on price. OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP TO BOTTOM: Hydrowood myrtle is a feature of the bar on board Spirit of the Wild; new furniture at Freycinet Lodge, designed and made by Simon Ancher, uses Hydrowood timber.
A TASMANIAN TREASURE
T
he recent completion of two RACT Destinations projects offers guests an up-close look at a lost Tasmanian treasure. Hydrowood is a reclaimed timber that for decades has rested at the depths of Tasmania’s Lake Pieman on the island’s west coast. The forest was flooded to create a hydro dam, but the trees, still standing beneath the surface, are now being innovatively harvested, dried and crafted. Tasmanian Hyrdowood was used in the furniture and finishes of two of RACT’s latest Destinations projects. With the recent completion of RACT’s Spirit of the Wild for Gordon River Cruises, Hydrowood was selectively chosen as the timber to be featured through the boat’s Premier Upper Deck. In this luxury seating area, angled leather recliners, a private viewing deck and stunning Tasmanian Hydrowood finishes all encapsulate an authentic high-end Tasmanian experience. Just as the name Spirit of the Wild was chosen for the vessel to reflect the west coast’s resilient and wild environment, the choice of Hydrowood also encompasses these attributes. Included in the timbers found here are some of the rarest and most sought-after timbers in the world, offering guests a close-up glimpse of what lies deep within the forests around them. 50

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2018
‘Included in the timbers found here are some of the rarest and most sought-after timbers in the world, offering guests a close-up glimpse of what lies deep within the forests around them.’ Jeremy Spear, from vessel designer Spear Green Design, said Hydrowood was selected due to its unique characteristics, the match between some of the timbers Hydrowood recovers and the timbers seen from the windows of Spirit of the Wild, and the beautiful nature of the specific timbers themselves. He said the timber’s unique backstory and harvesting techniques – as well as supporting a valuable local business – were key to the decision for its use. On the opposite side of the state, Freycinet Lodge has recently undergone a major design refresh, with carefully selected materials reflecting the surrounding natural environment including its bespoke furniture pieces created by Tasmanian furniture designer-maker Simon Ancher. Playing with space, volume and geometry, Simon Ancher’s Hydrowood
Western Beech furniture designs are prevalent throughout the lodge’s updated interior. Creating a capsule of bar-style benches, coffee tables, side tables and shelving units, the pieces spark intrigue as Simon’s use of empty triangular space evokes curiosity in the human eye. Staying true to his Tasmanian heritage and his respect for nature and sustainability, Simon used Hydrowood across the entire collection to create a contemporary Tasmanian edge while keeping the space warm and inviting. He, too, was drawn to Hydrowood’s intriguing origins and fascinated by its beautiful colour and the challenge of colour matching. Ancher was careful to incorporate techniques like laminating and resawing to get more mileage out of the timber, so nothing of this precious material was wasted.

W
ith more than 200 unique stamps to collect across Tasmania, Tiger Track Stamps has captivated visitors and locals of all ages thanks to local artist and RACT member Kaye Green. Kaye’s interest in stamps started in 1972 when she spent a year in Japan on exchange. Kaye saw people collecting stamps at various locations and was fascinated by them. She collected her first stamp at a temple in Kyoto and over the year filled three books. ‘Those books have always been my favourite souvenir because I can remember the time and place and the mood I was in when I discovered that particular stamp,’ she said. Just over three years ago, Kaye awoke early one morning and thought ‘stamps!’, raced to her studio and drew her first designs – the Ulverstone Clock, referencing her home town, The Nut at Stanley and the giant penguin statue at Penguin. Within one week, she had 40 designs and was only getting started. Collaborating with local businesses, Kaye developed stamp collecting pouches, each with their own booklet, pen and colourful lanyard. Her designs have also found their way onto magnets, postcards, reusable bags, t-shirts and into colouring books. Tiger Track Stamps has received an

overwhelmingly positive response from tourists and locals and was a finalist in the 2017 Tasmanian Tourism Awards. Young children, couples in their twenties and people in their eighties have embraced Kaye’s passion for collecting stamps and are using them to explore Tasmanian towns and attractions they have never thought of visiting. ‘It really warms my heart to hear stories of Tasmanians saying, ‘I’ve never, ever had a reason to call into Kempton before’,’ she said. ‘Families say to me, ‘You’ve changed car travel for our kids because they try to work out where the next stamp will be and where we can go next’.’ Kaye has even heard of tourists on the Spirit of Tasmania requesting the Spirit of Tasmania stamp as they begin their journey. Seeing the joy on people’s faces when they discover a new stamp, press it into the ink and reveal the handcrafted design is why Kaye loves creating new stamps for locations, businesses and attractions across the state. She sees Tiger Track Stamps as something she can genuinely give to Tasmania and hopes they become a natural part of the Tasmanian experience. TO TRACK DOWN TIGER TRACK STAMPS VISIT TIGERTRACK.COM.AU

THEATRE OF THE WILD
I
f you are thinking ‘Is there more to Africa than just some animals in the bush? Impressive as they are, surely any visitor would get bored after a day or two on safari?’ Put simply, no. Not at all. Speak to any traveller who has been on safari in Africa and they will tell you how their time spent there was never enough. They’ll tell you how the common animals bring uncommon sightings, how the interplay of animals produces unforeseen theatre in the wild and how it’s the animals we haven’t heard of that often leave the most indelible memories. Discovering the ferociousness of the honey badger, the athleticism of the caracal or the persistence of the dung beetle often leaves a mark that lasts well beyond your first lion sighting.
And that’s only if you just want to see the animals. In South Africa, you can spend some time in the world’s most beautiful city of Cape Town (that’s an official title, three years running), or head to the wineries where some of the world’s best winemakers reside (also official). You could also enjoy the hospitality of some of the warmest and most vibrant people on earth (not official, but trust us). Whatever your interest, you’ll find heaven in Africa.

Ghan guests walk through the Simpsons Gap landscape.
Ninety years a legend
N
ext year marks 90 legendary years of The Ghan, a journey renowned for its rich place in Australian history and for its connection to the awe-inspiring Outback. This incredible rail adventure through the heart of the nation traces the footsteps of explorers, pioneers, jackaroos and royalty, all of whom have travelled on board during the past nine decades. Choose this milestone year to book your next Ghan adventure, taking you from South Australia’s verdant vineyards and rugged coastline through to the Northern Territory’s red centre and on to Darwin’s tropical surrounds. All-inclusive, you’ll enjoy hospitality that’s second to none. You’ll dine on regional cuisine that reflects the areas the train travels through, and you can slake your thirst in the Outback Explorer Lounge. While there’s plenty of time to take in the passing landscape, you’ll also get the
opportunity to immerse yourself beyond the tracks with our included Off Train Excursions. Cruise along Nitmiluk Gorge and view Aboriginal art that’s thousands of years old, or visit an authentic Outback station to bear witness to extraordinary teamwork between man and horse. In Alice Springs, the choice is yours. Marvel at the towering rock face at Simpsons Gap or visit the Alice Springs Desert Park where you’ll watch an impressive bird of prey show. Take to the back of a camel for a different look at the MacDonnell Ranges, or hit the dirt tracks on a mountain bike. The Ghanniversary celebrations reach their peak throughout June, July and August 2019. Join us for an array of special events and festivities during these 90 days of celebration. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to ‘do The Ghan’, make it in its 90th year.

So much more to explore
ISABELLE HARDWICK, SAMANTHA PEPPER, LOUELLA HORNE, MADDIE WILLIAMS RACT TRAVEL
W
hen travelling to Adelaide, there is so much more to explore than just gardens and churches. A City Tour sheds light on the history of the city, highlighting its grid layout which was carefully planned by Colonel William Light around the River Torrens, which flows through the city, providing not only a picturesque backdrop but an excellent reference point for navigating your way around. Founded in 1836 as a freely settled British province, Adelaide features wide boulevards and large public spaces surrounded by lush green parklands. Unlike a lot of cities that have grown slowly over time, you can see how Adelaide’s carefully planned layout makes it such a livable city today. Staying at the Stamford Plaza Hotel, we were thrilled with the extremely friendly and professional service. All the staff were helpful and made our stay really enjoyable. The location of the hotel is very central, only a short walk to Rundle Mall and to the bars and restaurants if you feel like sampling some of South Australia’s finest. On exploring the city, we spent some time absorbing the beauty of St Peters Cathedral and its exquisite architecture. From here, we explored
the other side of the city, making our way to Haigh’s Chocolate Factory for a tour and to learn about the history of Haigh’s Chocolate. We got to see the factory at work, for example handwrapping all their chocolates – this was by far a highlight! A trip to South Australia would not be complete without a cruise on the iconic Murray River on board the paddle steamer PS Murray Princess. We embarked at Mannum, a cute little country town that was the site of the first paddle steamer built on the Murray River in 1852. Our steamer looked great sitting there ready to cruise. With the bright green grass surrounding the vessel and the sun shining, it was very welcoming. There was great service from the staff, offering to take our bags right up to our cabin. The Murray Princess itself was very well set out, with the Paddle Lounge at the back to take in the sun while sipping on some tea, or if you were like us and preferred to sit outside on the top deck in front of the bar, then that was perfect! All the guests travelling seemed to love it too and the staff were fantastic. The single bed was even comfier than a hotel room! The in-cabin bathroom was compact but the shower was great and the water did instantly get hot when turned on. There was ample
storage space, with a cupboard, plenty of drawers and even under the bed to store your suitcase if you wanted. The food was great. It was lovely to have a set menu, with not too many options but enough to pick between the meat or fish, nice and easy. Breakfast was also good, with lots of options and very well set out. The scrambled eggs were the best! Upon disembarking the Murray Princess, we were picked up and transferred by mini coach to Monarto Zoo, located in the Murraylands region about an hour from Adelaide. Monarto is Australia’s largest open range zoo and brings a little bit of Africa to Australia. This drive-through zoo gives you a safari-style experience that allows you to see the animals in a natural setting. The animals are spread across 1500 hectares with plenty of room to run around as they would in the wild. Some of the highlights were seeing the giraffes, lions and cheetahs, and seeing how well looked after and happy the animals were. Sometimes going to a zoo is a bit distressing, but this experience was completely positive. Monarto also has an option to explore by foot, with various walking tracks and viewing platforms. And the best thing? The entry fee paid goes towards the conservation of the zoo and preventing animal extinction. OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2018

SMALL IS BETTER
I
t’s no doubt that Europe is a popular destination, but along with the amazing sights and experiences, there’s the downside of waiting in lines, obstructed views and crammed buses. So, what better way to discover the genuine essence of Europe than on a small group tour? With a maximum of just 20 passengers, a Bunnik small group tour means more time with your guides, more space on the bus and better views, truly unique local experiences, less time spent waiting and a great opportunity to build lifelong friendships with your fellow travellers.
Our itineraries include a balance between all the famous landmarks that you expect to see on a tour, plenty of time for independent exploration and discovery, and unique local experiences that only small groups can access. Everyone dreams of the boulevards of Paris and the French Riviera, but touring the French countryside gives you an opportunity to really connect with the locals. Nobody likes hidden extras, and that’s one of the reasons that a Bunnik small group tour includes return international airfares in the tour price, as well as pre-paid tipping.
Cotton Castle, Pamukkale, Turkey.
On tour you’ll only pay extra for special interest activities that don’t always appeal to everyone, meaning they are truly optional. Book a Bunnik small group tour to Europe before 21 December to take advantage of a $250* per person earlybird saving. Contact your nearest RACT Travel branch.

Nothing else comes close to approximating its authenticity and all-five-senses engagement. For 50 years, we’ve been introducing travellers to this most thrilling way to experience the planet’s wonders and remarkable places, the most rugged and wildlife-rich regions, accompanied by experts able to illuminate all you see, and with cool tools to use to explore up close.

TAKES YOU AWAY
ANNUAL CRUISE SALE DAY 2018 It was a lovely winter’s day in Hobart when more Tasmanians than ever before came out to grab a bargain at our biggest ever Cruise Sale Day, on Sunday 12 August at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart. The 360-degree VR Cruise Deck experience was as popular as ever and theatre presentations were a resounding success, with many sessions standing room only. We also had our very own Metro ‘Cruise Bus’ driving around the city. For those members in the north and north-west of the state, we also had many of the special deals available for the following week, along with small events in Burnie, Devonport and Launceston. It is a pleasure to arrange an event that allows the public to talk directly to the suppliers to answer all their questions ‘first-hand’. And of course offer the best deals available. We also had a few prize draws this year, with the overall winner taking home a 5-day Myanmar cruise from Heritage Cruises/Trails of Indochina. We can’t wait to hear all about their holiday. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Our very own Metro ‘Cruise Bus’ outside Hotel Grand Chancellor; Lonnie Bevis and Ashley Caulfield ready to book those dream holidays; suppliers and guests having a great day. THE 2019 CRUISE SALE DAY WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT! AS SOON AS WE HAVE ALL THE DETAILS CONFIRMED, WE WILL LET YOU KNOW.

How long have you been in travel and what travelling experience do you have? This is my fourth year in travel. I graduated at TasTAFE, followed by three years as a travel consultant and now as a cruise specialist with the Cruise Travel Centre Hobart. What do you like best about working at Cruise Travel Centre? I like working with my amazing team in this fantastic office. Every day is such a blessing to assist people with incredible cruises and once-in-a-lifetime holidays. What is your favourite destination and why? Paris is a fascinating city with so much to offer… the Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and so much more. My most special moment was getting engaged at the top of the Eiffel Tower before embarking on our Paris to Prague River Cruise. Why do you think cruising is a great way to holiday? Cruising is the ultimate holiday! This style of stress-free travel combines beautiful accommodation with sumptuous cuisine, interesting destinations and impeccable service. Included is a host of activities to suit everyone, from lying by the pool, to enrichment lectures, to waterslides, to active onshore excursions, plus so much more!
Crystal stands outside the Eiffel Tower in her favourite travel destination, Paris.
Where would you like your next holiday to be and why? I would like to do a family cruise to the South Pacific. Being a family of six there is something for everyone. As parents we get to relax in the adults-only areas, the children love the kids club and we all come together as a family for amazing holiday experiences. No cooking, no cleaning! A dream holiday for any mum. What is your best travel tip? For long flights, add the local time of your destination to your phone clock. During your flights act as if you are already at your destination. For example if it is 10pm where you are heading, try to get some sleep. By the time you have arrived you have already shifted your body clock into the next timezone and no jetlag!
AN EVENING WITH ADVENTURE WORLD & LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Join us along with Travis from Adventure World and Justin from Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic for an information evening, showcasing Adventure World’s unique tailor-made itineraries and Lindblad Expeditions extraordinary expedition cruises.
