A look at the future ALEX LUTTRELL
T
he coming years will see a substantial change in the way we travel, with driverless vehicle technology on our doorstep. That is why we, along with the City of Hobart and the Tasmanian Government, undertook the state’s first demonstration of a driverless electric bus late last year. From 6-13 December, an electric NAVYA Autonom shuttle bus was showcased to Tasmanian transport stakeholders and the community in Lower Sandy Bay. The aim was to help us better understand and prepare for this emerging technology, how it can be applied in the state, and how it will affect the future of transport. But it was much more than just a one-week process. It took months of preparation, with a lot of learning along the way.
The process In March last year we partnered with autonomous vehicle distributor YDrive to help deliver the demonstration. A number of different locations were scouted, including Salamanca Place, the Queens Domain and the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay campus. Lower Sandy Bay was selected as it has corners, trees and buildings to navigate around, as well as low traffic numbers. Residents were informed of the demonstration, with a Traffic Management Plan, warning signs, speed limit signs and no-standing areas also established. It took a week for NAVYA deployment engineer Francois Pollet, working with us and the City of Hobart, to generate a map of the route. This involved mounting a mobile mapping system on top of a car and mapping the area. We did several
laps, with the road, kerbs, stationary vehicles, car parks, trees and buildings all recorded. The bus was also programmed to stop and give way at intersections and its designated pick-up and drop-off zones. All data was sent back to NAVYA in Paris for processing and refinement. The final map was then generated and sent back to Hobart to be installed into the bus’s computer. The bus drives itself through a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which determines its precise location geographically, as well as 2D and 3D light detection and ranging (LIDAR) surveyors. These use lasers to create perception maps of the environment, vehicles, pedestrians,

curbs and buildings. This allows precise positioning, as well as obstacle detection and avoidance. The bus also has cameras to detect lane markings, signs and traffic lights; odometry to measure the speed of each wheel to estimate vehicle speed and position; and autonomous emergency braking. If necessary, the bus can also be manually controlled by an onboard operator through the use of an X-Box controller. While the bus’s top speed is 25km/h, its operational speed for the demonstration was limited to 18km/h.
The challenges As this technology is in its infancy, the trial took months of planning and overcoming a number of logistical issues, including choosing the location for the trial. The bus had to be transported from Singapore, with shipping, clearances from Australian Customs and the need for a Vehicle Import Authority to be organised. Additionally, due to the driverless operation and design, it couldn’t be
registered. This resulted in us needing a short-term unregistered vehicle permit. Even during the demonstration, which included the the mapping and testing, low-hanging tree branches impeded both the bus’s LIDAR and GPS, while cars parked in the path of the bus’s sensors caused it to stop.
The demonstration The demonstration was far more popular than we expected. Our members snapped up all of the initial spaces on the bus in minutes, so we had to organise some more. Overall, we welcomed about 300 people on board, including our members, stakeholders, school students and community groups. People asked questions about the impacts on employment in the bus and transport industry, community trust and safety concerns, mobility access, technological features, legislative requirements, cost, and a variety of
other challenges and opportunities. These were all part of our research and will enable us to form our next steps in communication and advocating for this new technology.
The opportunities Our demonstration showed that through adequate planning, investment and education, driverless buses – particularly those running on fixed routes and dedicated lanes – can operate in real-world environments. Some of the opportunities for these vehicles include first and last mile connections to other transport modes, such as public transport or ride-sharing, as well as reduced congestion and emissions, and less need for car parking. There are also many applications for those who have mobility challenges. We will now look to use what we have learned to form a view on how we should move forward.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Kathryn Westwood
T
here is a concerning lack of progress on upgrades to a large part Tasmania’s road infrastructure that have been promised by the state and federal governments. This has an impact on both road safety and traffic congestion. A review of our key road funding priorities – as identified in state budget submissions, federal budget and election priorities, our 30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision and our Tasmanian Road Futures document – has rated governmental progress against our expectations. Aside from the Midland Highway 10-year plan – which is ahead of schedule – there has been little progress on other upgrades beyond funding under budget forward estimates and planning. Below is a breakdown of progress by priority area:
Bass Highway 10-year plan
We have been calling for urgent safety upgrades on the Bass Highway for
some time, particularly the corridor between Wynyard and Marrawah. There have been 259 crashes on this particular stretch of road between 2015-2019, with two resulting in fatalities and 12 in serious injury. Apart from the tragic and irreversible impact on the victims’ families and community, we know that in 2015 the economic cost of each road fatality was $4.34 million, and the cost per hospitalisation caused by road injury was $239,000. To date, $100 million has been promised for the Wynyard to Marrawah corridor by the state and federal governments under the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative. While planning has commenced, we are yet to see confirmed timelines on these vital upgrades. Other upgrades that we have been calling for include safety improvements at Christmas Hills, and new passing lanes at Parramatta Creek, which are are still in the planning phase. Upgrades of intersections at Wynyard have been completed, but there is still the potential for highspeed crashes involving vehicles turning across traffic, which has always been our concern at these intersections. With this in mind, they continue to be on our radar.
Launceston traffic solutions
We have had repeated reports from members and our advisory committee
about rapidly growing congestion issues in the Greater Launceston area. We are planning to launch a consultation process in the coming months for our Greater Launceston Mobility Vision that will look at a holistic, long-term solution to mobility across the region. In the meantime, we have been calling for a feasibility study regarding a new bridge over the Tamar River, as well as funding for long-term congestion strategies across the region. At this point in time both of these have been allocated funding, but timelines for some projects have not been confirmed. Without a commitment to resolving congestion, it continues to build in the region, causing frustration and adverse impact to people’s lifestyles.
30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision
Almost one year on from the launch of our Vision, we have seen funding and some research into the priority actions we have called for in the first 1-5 years. We have seen enforcement of clearways on Macquarie and Davey streets, and more cohesive planning from the four central councils in the Greater Hobart area to work on solutions. However, a lot more needs to be done to achieve our preferred 4% mode shift from private to public transport in the first 10 years of the Vision.
Research saves lives.

key tourist infrastructure including safety upgrades on Bruny Island Main Rd; and lane widening and shoulder sealing on the Stanley Highway.
Major projects
Our Vision for Greater Hobart in part relies on projects already committed to – such as the replacement of the Bridgewater Bridge and improvements on the eastern Hobart approach – to already be well under way and completed within the first 10 years of the Vision. Again, while funding has been committed by both state and federal governments for a replacement bridge at Bridgewater, we are still yet to see confirmed plans or a timeframe on this work. Similarly, funding has been allocated for the South East Traffic Solution between Sorell and the Tasman Bridge, but aside from the Hobart Airport interchange, no firm plans or timelines have been revealed.
Road safety upgrades
Also of great concern is the lack of progress on vital road safety upgrades at potential black spots around the state. While we have seen some improvements on the West Tamar Highway and Huon Highway, there is still a lot more to be done to help prevent the occurrence of serious and fatal crashes on these roads. Our calls for funding for a flyover on the East Tamar Highway at Alanvale and at the Mowbray Connector are also yet to be noticed, although we are pleased the Mowbray Connector has at least had some funding committed. Similarly, aside from some allocated funding, upgrades to the intersection of Howden Rd and the Channel Highway, and Sandfly junction with Huon Highway still have no firm plans or timelines. It is vital that we continue to put pressure on all levels of government to progress with upgrades across the state. They play an important part in ensuring the safety of all road users, as well as having an impact on our lifestyle. To see the full scorecard, go to ract.com.au.
Tasmanian tourist roads
Pleasingly, we have seen good progress on some of our calls for upgrades to key tourist roads, including safety upgrades and sealing of Hastings Caves Rd in the south, and the completion of current works on Richmond Rd between Cambridge and Richmond. We have also recently seen plans for the upgrade of the Arthur Highway at Eaglehawk Neck, and have submitted our feedback to the state government on these. We are now asking the state government to turn its focus to other

If a patient is stung by a bluebottle or other non-tropical jellyfish, rest and reassure the patient and do not rub the affected area. The tentacles should be safely removed and the stung area should be thoroughly rinsed with seawater prior to further treatment. Do not rinse with fresh water, as it causes the immediate discharge of thousands of stinging cells. Once rinsing with seawater is complete, place the stung area in hot water for 20 minutes. If heat doesn’t relieve the pain or hot water is unavailable, a cold pack or ice in a dry plastic bag should be applied. If the pain persists, the stung area is large or involves a sensitive area (e.g. the eye), call an ambulance by dialling triple zero (000). A
new year tends to spark thoughts of new beginnings – resetting goals, building on success and seeking new opportunities. We have certainly seen some of this in recent months with the demonstration of our driverless electric bus. We had more than 300 people experience this emerging technology over three days. The overwhelming message from all of them – be they members, politicians, community groups or schoolchildren – was that the demonstration provided a fascinating window into the future of mobility. For us, it was a chance to explore the challenges that Tasmanians would face in bringing this technology to the state. We were provided with a lot of feedback, including concerns about safety, effects on congestion, and the risk of people losing their jobs to technology. We have collated all of this and have reviewed it with a view to ensuring everyone’s voices are heard in mapping our mobility future. What we also discovered through setting up the demonstration is that we still have a long way to go before these buses are ready to hit our streets. To that end, in our State Budget submission we have called for the government to invest in mobility projects that set Tasmania up for a more sustainable future. This should include a public trial of autonomous vehicle technology to test uptake by members of the public, and integration into our current and future mobility networks.
Examples of the type of trial we are calling for include an autonomous bus or trackless tram trial on the vacant rail network in Hobart; and a trial of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems on vehicles that allow for smart signalling and traffic light timing at intersections. We are also calling for increased investment in safe, separated infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians; better land use planning across municipal boundaries; and subsidised public transport. Large infrastructure and public transit corridors need to be planned to meet population growth, urbanisation and changing mobility needs across wider community areas than current municipal boundaries. Our submission calls for: • Development of a state settlement strategy. • A planning decision framework that incorporates a strong focus on the short- and long-term traffic and mobility impacts. We are also asking the government to incentivise public transport to provide costeffective choices; and a full review of public transport options to enable a seamless, accessible service for all. Transport affordability continues to be one of the main concerns for Tasmanians, as evidenced by our recent fuel petition that reached 5000 signatures in a matter of hours, and is currently sitting at about 9300. With Tasmanians having the highest cost of fuel in the country, we’re calling on the State Government to fund and implement real-time fuel pricing similar to the FuelCheck system in New South Wales that makes it compulsory for retailers to report their prices at the bowser. We are currently in discussions with the State Government around this and will continue to push for its introduction as soon as practical. As we welcome Peter Gutwein as the state’s 47th Premier, we are ready to work with him and his government to ensure progress is made on these vital programs to ensure a better lifestyle for all Tasmanians.

iving with a disability can be isolating at times. But through the work of Guide Dogs Tasmania, there’s a crew of canine companions out there changing people’s lives. Some of the puppies currently in training are part of a brand new program helping families with autism. Aimed at kids between three and eight years old, the new program will see dogs who don’t pass their guide dog training adopted by families who need a helping hand (or paw!). ‘Those families are often feeling a little bit isolated and housebound,’ Guide Dogs Tasmania Coordinator Kim Ryan said. ‘The dog is a comforter, so when everything gets too much, the kid can look at the dog and have that comfort.’ Autism assistance dogs are also trained to keep the child safe when the family is out and about. If the child tries to run away, the dog will sit and a safety mechanism attaching the two will stop the child from potentially running onto a busy road or getting lost in a shopping centre. The social side of the autism program is another positive step. Making friends and socialising can be tricky for kids with autism, but with their four-legged best friend by their side keeping them calm, it’s often the confidence boost they need.
There are guide dogs helping people across Tasmania.
‘Children with autism are very isolated from their peers, but the dog can help a lot with that,’ Kim said. ‘Other children become interested and people on the street start to talk to them.’ To kickstart the new program, Guide Dogs Tasmania applied to our Community Fund. The money will go towards new coats for the puppies and special training equipment. Kim and the team have also had a lot of fun picking out loud toys to get the puppies used to being around kids. They’re teaching the dogs fun tricks to play with their young clients, such as high fives and passing a large ball back and forth. Guide Dogs Tasmania is always after more puppy raisers and part-time carers, as well as volunteers for their Street Appeal Day, ‘pup-up’ stores and collecting the Guide Dogs money boxes you often see in shops. You can also sign up for Pawgust to raise money and keep you and your precious pooch healthy. For more information visit guidedogstas.com.au.

Reading the Your Views article on speeding (Journeys Dec/ Jan 2020), the drive to Launceston is a task, especially with idiots that don’t like doing the speed limit. Then you come to mad truck drivers intimidating cars etc, and roadworks – again, no one gives a hoot. We need a train system from Wynyard, picking up people who don’t want to drive to Launceston. Imagine a pleasant drive without all those idiots. And the train can carry containers, dropping along the way. I, for one, would take the train to Launceston, not worrying about parking. Alternatively, duplicate the Bass Highway like we’ve got from Devonport to Burnie. Renny Grech, Turners Beach
I was a little startled to read that, according to Ian Martindale (Journeys Dec/Jan 2020), driving at 20 to 30km/h under the speed limit is ‘both irresponsible and dangerous’. The posted speed limit is the maximum allowed. It is not compulsory to stick to it and in fact there are many occasions when driving much slower is both wise and safe.

Examples include dusk to dawn when in many areas the roads are alive with wildlife; also, wet or misty weather requires slower speeds, and in some instances there are posted limits that are too optimistic. In my area there are various narrow winding roads, and a couple I travel on regularly have limits of 80km/h in one case and 100km/h in another. My speed varies between 50 and 80km/h on those roads, according to the conditions. Traffic does not build up behind me so it seems that other drivers are also driving at a similar speed to me. As well as my car, I have ridden a motorbike and driven trucks and school buses, and I regard myself as a reasonably experienced and careful driver with no irresponsible or dangerous habits. Signalling at roundabouts
I wish to draw attention to the dangerous practice employed by some motorists in giving a left turn signal
when entering a roundabout, even when intending to go straight through. At many roundabouts, motorists now have to rely on left turn signals from motorists already in the roundabout to be able to find a space to enter the roundabout. Under these circumstances a left turn indication by a motorist intending to go straight on through could lead to a serious accident. The Tasmanian road rules state that motorists should signal left when entering the roundabout if intending to leave the roundabout less than half-way around. While this may be intended to address the possibility of a roundabout with other than four exits, it is quite confusing and it also allows the possibility that a motorist signals left on entering the roundabout but does not exit at the first exit. Under such circumstance it would be far safer for a motorist waiting to enter if no left turn signal was given at all when entering the roundabout. In my view it would be safer if the road rules for all states were changed so that no left turn signal was given when entering a roundabout at all but only when leaving at the immediate next exit. Limitation: 9,999 worldwide | Finish: Layered in Pure Gold | Quality: Proof | Edition: Uniquely numbered | Diameter: 38.6mm
F
ebruary 1954: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to tour Australia. During the tour, Her Majesty wore a couture gown accented by a wattle motif as a symbol of the Queen’s deep affection for the people of Australia. This landmark event heralded the start of a royal tour tradition which thrilled royal enthusiasts for six decades. Buckingham Palace has announced that Her Majesty will no longer undertake world tours which, sadly, brings to an end an important chapter of our history. A new crown coin has been struck to celebrate this history-making first royal tour. Struck to a high specification, only 9,999 numbered issues will ever be minted.
Limited Edition with Individual Numbering Each crown coin is individually numbered, meaning no two are the same. Yours is the one and only issue of its kind – the ultimate collector’s item. Fully layered with Pure 24-Carat Gold As befitting an event of such importance, the coin is fully layered with pure 24-carat gold.
The earliest applications will receive the lowest edition numbers. For this reason applications will be processed on a strictly first-come, first-served basis and are limited to one per Australian household. Successful applicants also qualify to view the next coin in the Royal Tours of Australia and New Zealand Crown Collection for only $79.99 (plus $9.99 postage and handling) sent entirely without obligation on our 14-day home approval service. FIRST DRIVES: MITSUBISHI ASX DARREN MOODY
T
he fundamental mechanics of the Mitsubishi ASX may date back 10 years to its original release, but its third major facelift goes more than skin deep. The new ASX has a raft of improvements and new features across the current models, with two new variants joining the line-up. All models across the range have new sheet metal from the A pillars forward, the latest iteration of the ‘Dynamic Shield’ grille and fascia, as well as LED headlights and external lights. There have also been a few tweaks to the rear, including the bumper and rear lights. Forward collision mitigation (AEB) is now standard in all models too. In the base spec ES you can opt for the ADAS package, which adds lane departure warning, auto high beam, reverse sensors, blind spot warning, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert for $2500. All other models get the suite of ADAS features as standard. The ES is available in five-speed manual or CVT auto, coupled to a 110kW, 197Nm 2.0L petrol engine. LS and the newly added MR use the same engine but are CVT only. For those who think they would like a bit of extra performance, GSR and Exceed models are fitted with a 2.4L engine, increasing power and torque by 12% and 13% respectively. Keyless
‘The new ASX has a raft of improvements and new features across the current models, with two new variants joining the line-up.’ entry and start is standard for LS and above models, as well as two USB ports and a handy and safe location for your mobile phone. MR and GSR variants are new to the range and add a sportier look and feel. Dark alloy wheels, black grille and door mirrors, privacy glass, fog lights, alloy pedals, leather appointed steering wheel, gearshift knob and park brake, and red stitching complete the MR, while the GSR is fitted with black interior headlining, a rear spoiler, paddle shift, six speaker audio along with the larger 2.4L engine. All models get the new 8” multimedia screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the top-of-the-range Exceed includes leather seat trim, four-way power driver’s seat, panoramic glass roof, 18” alloys, navigation and Rockford Fosgate premium audio with a subwoofer located in the cargo area, which does rob a little bit of usable space. We spent a couple of days cruising country roads and highways in the Exceed and definitely noticed the extra power with the bigger engine. Making our way through country towns, the 2.4L engine and CVT combination worked exceptionally well together. It rarely flared into the top end of the rev range, which is quite common with CVT
autos. Ride handling and comfort aren’t what I’d describe as class-leading, but for the most part they get the job done pretty well. When it comes to fuel economy, the official combined cycle figures are 7.6L/100km for the 2.0L and 7.9L/100km for the 2.4L. However, in my experience this varies when you actually hit the road depending on traffic conditions, vehicle condition, load and how you drive. ASX comes with Mitsubishi’s five-year warranty and has three-year capped-price servicing with an annual/15,000km cost of $199. Prices start at $24,990 drive away for the entry level ES manual, add $1750 for the auto. The new GSR with 2.4L auto is $32,240 drive away, while the top of the range Exceed is $35,740 drive away. ASX has been the leading vehicle in the small SUV category for many years. With each model in the range offering pretty good value for money, it’s not hard to see why so many have found homes in Australian driveways. FINANCE IT WITH US! 10 YEARS OF KEYS2DRIVE
K
eys2drive recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. After its launch in Tasmania a decade ago, it is now one of Australia’s most successful driver education programs. Keys2drive offers learner drivers and their supervisors a free 60-minute driving lesson with a qualified instructor. The aim of the program is to prevent death and injury among young drivers, especially during the first six months of their P plates when they are most at risk. Within the first year of independent driving, provisional licence holders are 20 times more likely to be in a car crash than when they are on their L plates and driving with a supervisor. Keys2drive encourages young drivers to ‘find their own way’ by focusing on more practice behind the wheel in a range of conditions, and developing a deep understanding of the responsibility that comes with being a safe driver. The free lesson is also a valuable opportunity for supervising drivers to refresh their road rules and safety knowledge, so they can provide higher quality supervision.
Melanie Kate Photography
Learner driver Kaiden and his supervisor Rod having a Keys2drive lesson in Launceston with RACT driving instructor Trevor Lewis, who delivered the first Keys2drive lesson in Australia 10 years ago.
Since 2009, nearly 730,000 learner drivers and their supervisors have participated in a Keys2drive lesson across Australia. Research conducted in 2019 found that 94% of supervisors observed that their learner driver had a greater appreciation of the risks of solo driving after having the free lesson. Additionally, 95% of supervising drivers felt more comfortable teaching their learner how to drive. For more information on Keys2drive and to redeem a free driving lesson with a qualified instructor visit ract.com.au/ cars-and-driving/driver-training/keys2drive.

Bruny Island Quarantine Station
Tourism Tasmania and Rob Burnett
Evolve Spirits Bar
Let the world evolve around you at this luxury venue on Hobart’s historic waterfront. MACq 01 Evolve Spirits Bar is a bar with a difference. Explore the growing Tasmanian distilling scene and other rare spirits while surrounded by a fascinating collection of fossils and artefacts from land and sea. The specimens range from a giant Russian cave bear to a triceratops nose horn. Some date as far back as 550 million years ago.
Tunnel Hill Mushrooms
Learn how oyster mushrooms are grown and stored as you walk through a dark and misty repurposed train tunnel on a railway line that ran from Bellerive to Sorell between 1892 and 1926. Producer Dean Smith farms three types of oyster mushrooms in this space, which he bought in 2000. The tunnel is the ideal environment due to its relatively stable yearround temperature and low light. Tunnel Hill Mushrooms supplies to some of Hobart’s top restaurants, including The Glasshouse and Franklin. It is also looking to introduce
Step back in time at the Bruny Island Quarantine Station at Barnes Bay. Currently managed by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and the volunteers of Wildcare Friends of Bruny Island, the site has had several uses in its history. It was originally established in 1884 as a quarantine station to defend against infectious diseases. It later became a place of internment for German nationals in 1914. The station is most well known for being the ‘last stop before home’ for Tasmanian soldiers returning from World War I. With an influenza pandemic sweeping the world, it was a precarious time. Pack a picnic and do the fascinating heritage walk.
Spiky Bridge
Watch out for the unusual when travelling south of Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. Opposite the beaches of Great Oyster Bay, the iconic Spiky Bridge was built by convicts in 1843. It now intrigues passersby with its unusual design. It was built without mortar or cement, and field stones were laid vertically to create the spikes. It was once thought that it was designed to prevent cattle from falling over the sides of the bridge. However, it’s now believed it was made to withstand harsh weather conditions.
Darlington Probation Station
Listen for ghosts when you sleep in a gaol cell on Maria Island. The Maria Island National Park features
the World Heritage-listed Darlington Probation Station. It housed convicts from 18251850 and is believed to be the most intact example of its kind in Australia. The site has remained relatively unchanged since the convict era. Today it offers basic bunkhouse accommodation – nine rooms with six beds and one room with 14 beds. Heating is with a woodfired stove and there’s no power, running water or lighting in the rooms. Bring your own bike or hire one – there’s so much to explore. Access to Maria Island is via ferry from Triabunna.
Chalmers Church
Discover the fascinating history of this mysterious church with peeling white paint. Chalmers Church in Launceston officially opened in 1860. It’s a stunning example of flamboyant gothic revival style. It was designed by Tasmanian-born architect William Henry Clayton after the Great Disruption of 1843 – a divide in the Church of Scotland that resulted in the Free Church and a new building. The church was named after the leader of the Great Disruption, Thomas Chalmers. Today it’s no longer a church, but a creative business space. It was given a makeover by Walker Designs in 2014 and has drawn much attention and interest.
Stillwater SEVEN
Sleep in an old flour mill and experience reinvention at its finest. In addition to dining at the popular and indulgent Stillwater restaurant, you can now sleep in a heritagelisted flour mill just a minute’s walk from Cataract Gorge in Launceston. Opening in 2019
as Stillwater SEVEN, it offers seven rooms showcasing the amazing results of reusing and recycling. Stillwater has combined this with the finest quality furniture and décor from Tasmanian makers – even the beds were designed in Hobart.
Henty Dunes
Be swept away by views of the remarkable Henty Dunes. Found just outside Strahan, these extraordinary sand dunes fringe Ocean Beach (Tasmania’s longest beach) and reach up to 30m in height in some places. They were formed by the Roaring Forties – a wind that blows uninterrupted from South America and gains speed all the way to Tasmania. For those looking for some adrenalin-fuelled fun, why not try tobogganing or even quad biking down them? Or for something a little calmer, there’s a 1.5-hour return walk to Ocean Beach, where you can explore and marvel at the wild coastline.
takayna/the Tarkine
Search for rare giants in takayna / the Tarkine rivers on Tasmania’s north-west, home to the remarkable giant freshwater crayfish. This endangered creature has shades of stunning blue on its body, lives up to 60 years and can grow up to 80cm. Surround yourself in the largest temperate rainforest in the southern hemisphere. Marvel at towering tall trees above, the glistening creeks, rivers and windswept beaches all brimming with history. Don’t forget to look down too - brilliant coloured fungi from blue to orange and all shades in between are abundant in fungi season.

P
rospect House Private Hotel sits with understated elegance in Richmond’s countryside. It does so thanks to the craftsmanship of 18 convicts who lived in the cellar’s cosy confines back in the 1830s. From their cellar base, a two-storey Georgianstyle mansion took shape above. Nearly 200 years on, the historic property has been transformed into a 12-room luxe countryside hotel. Guest cars roll over a small bridge, almost a past-era threshold, to arrive at Prospect House. The house began its life as a private residence for James Buscombe, a notable fellow who owned several houses as well as the post office, general store and what is now the Richmond Arms Hotel. Indeed, there’s even a secret entrance to Buscombe’s study, where he conducted all his business affairs. Across the years, this south-east Tasmanian icon remained a private home, operated as a restaurant under Graeme Phillips (a former Mercury food reviewer) and moved between ownership. However, its most significant evolution has been under current owners John and Libby Pooley, who own nearby Pooley Wines. Determined to keep the property true to its original character, the Pooleys have invested $5 million since buying it in late 2017. 24 Journeys
FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020
The restoration has not been without its challenges. The aforementioned entry bridge had completely collapsed and its Huon pine gates were hidden amongst tall-growing grass. The bridge and gate restoration included stately new sandstone pillars. Today the Pooleys’ entrance sets the scene for the all-inclusive experience ahead, complete with an open bar, onsite chef and weekend cooking classes. The lush garden and re-established driveway paths are the product of a whopping 30 trucks of gravel. The former tennis court at the property’s southern end has now been transformed to a large lawn area and outdoor events space. There’s even outdoor chess for those with a penchant for making tactical moves between evening cocktails. The Pooleys were determined to pay tribute to the property’s former grandeur and have gone to painstaking lengths to retain its character. Where the lower-level sandstone terrace fell away from the house, every piece of sandstone was collected and numbered. It would take two stonemasons six weeks to recreate the terrace with its hundreds of pieces. Every window in the main home was examined to ensure as many original windows as possible remained. Transforming 12 rooms around the back courtyard and within the main
house to a premium level was no easy task. Most rooms had been neglected for more than half a decade. Courtyard rooms were fashioned with uneven flooring and bathrooms graced with rotting wooden beams. The entire courtyard has been converted from a mud pit to a sandstone-paved meeting place, complete with inviting firepit. As with any restoration, endearing discoveries were aplenty. Deep under the stable’s rubble, the original cobblestone floor was uncovered and now stands proud. Plenty of horse shoes were found on site, and a couple of token cannon balls were tucked away in the site’s foundations. A wooden door complete with matching wooden lock were found and restored, now taking pride of place in the cellar. Also deep below are the nails from which Graeme Phillips used to hang his game meats in the 1980s. Positioned as a top-end stay, guests pay anywhere from $280 to $600 a night. Immersed in tales dating back to the 1830s, one may even meet the ghost of James Buscombe’s wife, said to still be roaming the hallways in search of lost jewels. prospecthouseprivatehotel.com.au ABOVE FROM LEFT: Historical features are highlighted in the completed renovation; the bridge into the property had to be rebuilt.

FIVE TOP HOBART FEASTS
Hobart’s reputation for exciting, boundary-pushing cuisine is well deserved and strong enough to make the rest of Australia sit up to attention, writes Kerry Heaney.
W
hether you are dining in the basement of Mona, the back streets of the city, or a CBD hole in the wall, the food is fresh, original and exciting. It draws on the abundance of excellent Tasmanian produce and serves up the expected with flair. Here are five dining options that will make you hungry to visit.
Faro, Mona
The only thing you can predict about dining at the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) is that it is unpredictable. Dining at Faro, where the restaurant is reverse engineered around an art installation, turns a meal into an experience. Built around the enormous white globe of James Turrell’s Unseen Seen with his Weight of Darkness waiting around the corner, the restaurant is an eye-stopping space. Walk in here and you’ll be stunned by the 13m high ceilings and the first natural light in the museum. Do you look at the expansive Derwent River views, the white sphere, or your plate? Probably all three in quick succession until eating becomes your imperative. Mona’s executive chef Vince Trim describes Faro as a place to invigorate you for the rest of your exploration. Originally from New Zealand, Vince has been ‘let loose in the Mona kitchen’, as he describes it, for 10 years. His culinary passion is evident, and it drives the eclectic European-inspired seasonal menu to great heights. The menu teases, starting with little and small plates, then working 26 Journeys
FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020
up to large plates, and is spiked with ingredients you have never heard of before. It’s okay to ask the wait staff to explain what guindilla, kunzea or saltbush furakaki might be before you order. They may be new flavours to your palate, but you can be sure your taste buds will be delighted to meet them. The drinks do not disappoint either. Faro’s black margarita with a feral pig eye encased in ice is a beautiful but confronting concoction. An offshoot of Mona’s Eat the Problem exhibition, which aims to deepen the appreciation of sustainable thinking, the cocktail is available on request, when the tricky ice cube ball machinery is working. mona.net.au
Templo, Hobart
Dining at Templo is like going to a party at someone’s house where the crowd is pumping and the food is deliciously approachable. Small and cosy, the restaurant might be located in the back blocks of Hobart, but it does not miss out when it comes to awards, taking home a hat in the Good Food Guide 2019. The small, seasonal Italianinfluenced menu is filled with the sort of dishes that make your mouth water just thinking about them. The cooking is inventive but not over-the-top, the service fast and friendly. Owners Chris Chapple and Matt Breen, who is also head chef, source their produce direct from a handful of suppliers, farmers and producers. The menu changes regularly, but the gnocco fritto (small fried bread
puffs) is available every day, along with handmade pasta. You might also find baked sardines or pork neck with braised greens alongside fried quail. If it all sounds too tempting, a chef’s menu with small tastes of everything should suffice. There’s also a window through to the kitchen so you can see all the action unfold. templo.com.au
Tasmanian Wild Seafood Adventures
If you have never been fond of the flavour of sea urchin, this half-day cruise on the Derwent River and around Bruny Island could change your mind. You’ll see skipper and diver Shane Wilson jump overboard and bring up the ocean’s bounty ready for your feasting pleasure. There are sea urchins and periwinkles in the bag when Shane emerges and climbs, dripping, onto the deck. Those periwinkle shells that have been colonised by cute red hermit crabs get thrown back into the sea. The sea urchins are not so lucky. They are the fourth course in this deep-to-dish experience. The decadent degustation takes place as the two-storey catamaran motors in through pristine Tasmanian waters. After an oyster shucking lesson, there are oysters natural, or kilpatrick if you prefer. As the boat pulls up next to a salmon farm, Shane brings out a large salmon.
IN TASMANIA TODAY
Kerry Heaney
It looks freshly plucked from the ocean, but he picked it up that morning from the farm. Shane makes fish filleting look so easy, and soon there are delicate slices of pink salmon marinating on top of a polished pink slab of rock salt. He dabs some with basil pesto and others get the blow torch treatment. There is more still to come. A large red lobster quickly becomes another dish where the succulent white flesh is a star. The sea urchins have their moment of glory as the hard-shell exterior is cut open. Shane places it on a bed of rice, and it becomes sushi. The flavour is better than any I have tasted, but I’m still not convinced. However, according to Shane, this is a highlight for Asian passengers who consider sea urchin a real delight. For me, the star of the show is the thin slices of abalone that Shane has freshly prepared. He shows us how to cut open the shell and prepare the meat. In a flash, it is cooked on the grill and served up in the shell. tasmanianwildseafoodadventures.com.au
Kin Japanese BBQ
Blink and you will miss this holein-the-wall Japanese restaurant in Hobart’s busy Macquarie Street, and that would be a shame, because this is food to savour. You can see chef Casey Burns at the rear of this long, narrow restaurant cooking over a simple hibachi grill.

The inspiration for this restaurant came not from a holiday in Japan, but a trip to New Zealand where Casey stumbled across a yakitori bar and had a lightbulb moment. Back home in Hobart, Casey found a space to create the intimate dining experience of his dreams. The food is all cooked over a little concrete box filled with coal made from recycled wood, which burns for up to seven hours so Casey can work his magic. Expect to dine on Bruny Island oysters that are just warmed through yet still have chargrilled favour. There are roe-on Tasmanian scallops that you dip into the egg yolk and then roll in crumbled wakame (seaweed). You can also roll your own sashimi and caramelised yuzu (citrus fruit) tart for dessert. It’s crafted from seasonal produce sourced directly from small local suppliers, or whatever has inspired Casey at the Salamanca or Farmgate markets that week. Bar manager Liliana is creative with drinks, and her Earl Grey cocktail is a must-try, or you can dip into the sake matches.
2017 and reopened it as the elegant 12-room Prospect House Private Hotel. Although in-house guests take precedence, the dining room is once again welcoming outside visitors. Head chef Kurstin Berriman works with carefully selected produce from Coal River Valley to create dishes that showcase local flavours. You might find beef cheek braised with Coal River cabernet surrounded by vegetables plucked that day from the Prospect House garden, or free-range Tarkine pork belly with pickled quince, again from the orchard just outside the dining room window. Below the stairs, the convict-built cellar is now home to wines made between 100m and 10,000km from Prospect’s door. Overnight guests enjoy a lavish breakfast spread in the kitchen conservatory including freshly baked bread, house-made muesli and condiments along with eggs to order.

isitors to the iconic Port Arthur Historic Site will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a brand new experience in the haunting and eerie Separate Prison. Brought to life by the Turin Production Partnership, A Punishing Experiment is a limited run of performances exploring the idea of isolation and silence as punishment and reform. Opening in 1849, the Separate Prison was a new institution designed to deal with the worst class of criminal at Port Arthur. The aim was to subdue the prisoners by imposing the strictest of treatment and rules. The most important rule being silence. No footsteps were to be heard – guards and prisoners had to wear felt overshoes. Prisoners were not allowed to talk or would suffer further isolating punishment in the Dumb Cell. When it comes to choosing a new holiday destination every year, I always try to reach further afield to unique and wonderful places. Sri Lanka hadn’t really crossed my mind before, but I now realise what I had been missing out on. I was recently given the opportunity to experience Sri Lanka with Bunnik Tours, which has been escorting guests to this paradise since 2004. The family owned small group touring company has a main reservations office and headquarters in Colombo. So we were really experiencing the heart and soul of Bunnik Tours, as well as Sri Lanka. I was very grateful to be able to spend nine breathtaking days on this amazing picturesque island. A land of spicy curries and soothing sandalwood oils, we visited five different areas of the island to get a taste of the real Sri Lanka. To see everything properly, you really need to be on a small group tour that knows Sri Lanka inside and out. I went there with no expectations and was amazed every single day by the quality of the Bunnik Tours’ experience, from the hand-picked accommodations, to incredible inclusions and to the coach itself, which was retro-fitted for the small group, so everyone had a single seat and a great view. The highlights for me were climbing Sigiriya Rock in the 30 degree heat. It was something I thought I couldn’t do and would not have done without the support of our Bunnik group and tour escort. The elephant safari was something else I was not expecting. It was a beautiful experience watching these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, untouched and unexploited, with our expert private guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable. Sri Lanka is a destination for young and old and within easy travelling distance from Australia, and yet such a unique destination for us all to visit. MEET THE TEAM BREE YOUNG RACT TRAVEL BURNIE
How long have you been in travel and what travelling experience do you have? I’m a newcomer to the travel industry but a long-time traveller. Growing up on the mainland there were many family holidays up and down the east coast of Australia. I started my international travelling with Disneyland at 12 years old and have continued to travel internationally every couple of years to destinations including China, France, Italy, USA and Tahiti. I have just recently returned from my first cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas which was an incredible experience. What do you like best about working at RACT Travel? What I love best is the stories! I love hearing people’s reasons for travelling, their amazing adventures and memories that have been made while travelling. Everyone who sits down with me at my desk has a unique story and perspective on the destinations they have visited.
What is your favourite destination and why? I think this is one of the hardest questions to be asked as a traveller. I have been to such diverse destinations it is almost impossible to simply pick one. Venice holds a special place in my heart; I loved setting out on foot and exploring its many wonders. New Orleans during the Jazz and Heritage Festival was also another amazing feast for the senses. Where would you like your next holiday to be and why? A family adventure to Canada and Alaska to explore the wildlife and wilderness. One of the greatest gifts you can give children is to help them to be curious and want to see and learn about new things. What is your best travel tip? I think Confucius got it right – ‘Wherever you go, go with all your heart.’ Come and see me at RACT Travel Burnie to plan your next inspiring adventure. TRAVEL
Make sure you have plenty to keep the kids entertained.
FIVE WAYS TO MAKE TRAVELLING WITH KIDS EASIER ‘The biggest rule of travelling with children is to pack a lot of games and activities.’
A
t times, travelling with kids can be challenging, especially throughout an extended road trip. However, there are ways to make the trip much more enjoyable for mum, dad, and the little ones.
1. Pack a lot of games The biggest rule of travelling with children is to pack a lot of games and activities. This will keep them amused and distracted plus give you some down time, or allow you to navigate or drive with ease. 2. Bring travel-safe snacks You want to ensure your road trip snacks are simple, healthy and hydrating. Avoid chocolate as it melts and is full of sugar. Crackers can crush easily and cause a real mess. 3. Map it out A little bit of prep can go a long way. Map out your journey or hire a GPS so you don’t get lost. You can also engage with your
children by getting them to pick out some things they’d like to see along the way.
4. Sort out the seats If you’re travelling with a toddler and hiring a car, you’ll need to ensure they are strapped in safely. Thrifty can provide both forwardand rear-facing baby seats, as well as booster seats, and is able to assist with installation. 5. Consider driving overnight If you have a long journey ahead or are driving interstate, an overnight drive might be just the way to go. You and your partner can take shifts driving while the kids sleep. Thrifty can happily assist you with most of the equipment you’ll need for a family road trip, including a GPS, stroller, and prepaid fuel so that you can focus on the fun times. As a member of RACT you save 15% on Thrifty’s best daily rate and there are no charges for an additional driver across Australia and New Zealand. FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020
