CONTENTS

Driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions by employing more environmentally friendly construction materials – we are experiencing a seminal moment in the long and illustrious evolution of timber construction. Reinforced by the latest technological advances, new prefabrication techniques and processes that increase its sustainability, safety, and efficiency – timber structures are reconnecting our interior spaces with nature through the warmth, texture, and beauty of wood.

04 Judging Panel

Despite a challenging year, as we have come to expect the 2020 Structural Timber Awards attracted a rich vein of entries spanning architectural achievements and engineering feats – all reaping the rewards of contemporary timber technology. These projects are representative of a construction industry that is now embracing digital tools and smart technologies but as ever, variety is central to the Structural Timber Awards, and we look forward to presenting trophies for an expansive range of categories. The timber industry is experiencing increasing demand – so the Structural Timber Awards are more relevant than ever. Amid the calls for maximising the sustainability credentials and health benefits associated with a breadth of structural timber solutions – these pioneering projects push boundaries in UK construction. Now in its sixth year and taking place against the backdrop of COVID-19, this year’s Awards Brochure will guide you through the finalists – an impressive portfolio of projects, technologies, individuals and organisations that have made the awards shortlist. The awards showcase acclaimed architects, engineers and developers, as well as innovators who are new to the construction industry and have produced outstanding systems and solutions. Once again, our fantastic sponsors have made contributions that are empowering the continuing success of the awards. A huge thank you to each organisation that has sponsored the 2020 awards ceremony. Another big thank you goes to the Structural Timber Awards Judging Panel who have the unenviable task of selecting winners amid a sea of outstanding achievements. The standard of entries clearly demonstrates how much competition there is in the timber industry. Ranking the projects has requires an intense level of knowledge and consideration. Thank you to our judges for sharing their expertise in evaluating each inspiring award submission. And of course, thank you to all of our entrants, who really make the Structural Timber Awards the renowned success that it is today. You are the ones that provide us with projects to celebrate and share with the wider construction community to demonstrate what is achievable using sustainable timber systems and innovative techniques. PRIVATE HOUSING PROJECT OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

ACME: THE TRADITIONAL OAST HOUS The Traditional Oast House form has been reimagined by ACME to create a new home within the rolling landscape and apple orchards of Kent. Bumpers Oast is a 21st century house with five shingle-clad towers that rise up a former apple orchard, creating an extremely low-energy contemporary home. Each roundel was seen as housing a different function in the makeup of the home. A triple-height atrium links all the spaces, with a kitchen and sitting room coming off this open-plan space on the ground floor.

ARCO2 ARCHITECTURE: WATERHOUSE Waterhouse is a replacement dwelling near wadebridge in Cornwall. The brief was to provide a site specific and bespoke design tailored to the clients needs without compromising on energy efficiency. It was important to blend into the landscape, whilst opening up the living space to capitalise on the surrounding panoramic. The existing cut and fill single site level, provided the opportunity to conceal and blend the new design into the landscape both from the elevated adjacent Northern highway, and from the southern aspect across the river Camel.

CABU: THE CABU BARNHOUSE The CABU Barnhouse modular building is a marriage of design efficiency with optimal architecture forged from experience and aesthetics. The engineered timber construction offers simple discreet assembly methods that seek to compliment the process and maximise the efficiency. A softwood glulam frame is expressed internally to inform the junctions of the building whilst being enveloped at floor, wall and roof level by the lightweight structural tongue and groove composite insulated timber panels to provide the internal timber finish and a high level of thermal performance.

CSK ARCHITECTS: CORK HOUSE Cork House is the first of its kind, with monolithic walls and corbelled roof pyramids made almost entirely from solid load-bearing blocks of cork in combination with structural timber components. Its distinctive structural form and atmospheric spaces are the result of a whole life approach to environmental sustainability. Designed and built as a prefabricated kit-of-parts, this highly innovative form of plant-based construction has resulted in a building that is carbon negative at completion with extremely low whole life carbon.

ENGENUITI & TIGG + COLL ARCHITECTS: THE TAUSSIG FAMILY HOME Tigg + Coll Architects and Engenuiti were appointed to design a light, spacious and barrier-free home for the Taussig family and their two young boys who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. An expressive Glulam diagrid roof over a single storey extension acts as a continuous timber canopy over the internal spaces and external terrace which reflects the woodland setting of the existing house. The roof, which cantilevers 4.5m, is a composite glulam and plywood structure has been lovingly detailed to meet the unique terms of the brief.

FOSTER & PARTNERS: THE DOLUNAY VILLA The Dolunay Villa is situated along the coast of the Aegean Sea in Turkey’s southwestern province of MuÄ&#x;la. The new private villa has been carefully sited amid the natural rugged setting, prioritising the spectacular sea views. The house features a handcrafted undulating structural timber roof, designed in conjunction with Swiss firm Blumer Lehmann. The solid structural oak beams rest on steel columns, supporting a large 7.5m cantilever, providing generous outdoor shaded spaces and cool shaded courtyards to the rear.

G-FRAME STRUCTURES, FLETCHER CRANE ARCHITECTS & BINDERHOLZ: WATER GARDENS POD Water Gardens Pod is a three-bedroom luxury dwelling for the rental market that nestles beneath a seventeen-storey tower block, built on a concrete plinth which forms the roof of an existing office building below. The scheme clearly demonstrates the way in which building with CLT can meet very complex design and site requirements, whilst blending into an architecturally important and historically sensitive setting. Fundamentally, the project addresses the issues of high density living in an ingenious and creative way, with the efficient re-use of existing structure.

JW ARCHITECTS: NEW LODGE New Lodge is an environmentally conscious replacement dwelling located in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, ambitiously designed to accommodate the requirements of modern family living with a tight budget. It was important to create a highly efficient home that utilised sustainable materials and systems, as well as offering a unique aesthetic and maintaining the requirements of a busy family. The design of New Lodge provides an insight into how modern environmentally family homes can be built to meet a tight budget.

KENNEDY TWADDLE: TWENTY TWO Twenty Two uses solid timber to dramatic effect creating a light filled, natural and sustainable housing project. The client brief was to marry a thoroughly modern structure with the historic parts of the house. A space for living and a space for home working was needed. The material that could best meet the brief was solid timber. With the structure honestly expressed and the unique characteristics of each element on show the result is an example of what can be done for the same cost as a more standard approach.

PENT DEVELOPMENTS: SIPS PENTHOUSE Building a bespoke shell offsite using timber SIP Panels and a small Hiab crane to deliver and erect the shell, we demonstrated how a flexible and creative approach was possible to create a penthouse on an unused rooftop where conventional construction methods were not suitable. Our approach solves issues of access, weight whilst providing a solution which delivered on structural integrity, sustainability, aesthetics and liveability.

STOLON STUDIO & BACA: KAOLIN COURT Kaolin Court is a radical new development of live and workspaces set around a shared central courtyard garden (the neighbour yard) on an infill site. The project presents a new model for sociable living which is sustainable, energy efficient and attractive. The use of timber frame as the primary structural system helped to deliver the project within budget, on schedule and to a high standard of energy efficiency. This was made possible by collaboration, continuous evaluation of construction methods and value engineering.

STORA ENSO, EURBAN & TIKARI WORKS: THE RYE The Rye by Tikari Works is a cross-laminated timber (CLT) development of 10 apartments overlooking Peckham Rye Park. The scheme replaces a dilapidated 2 storey post war building and 4 associated garages. CLT has been used for all internal walls as well as the superstructure. This is not necessary from a structural perspective, however CLT’s use throughout the buildings dovetailed seamlessly and achieved a key design principle to create uncomplicated, uncluttered spaces that will provide an unfussy backdrop to furniture and daily life.

TAYLOR LANE TIMBER FRAME: CUBIS BRUTON Cubis Bruton is a unique housing development, requiring complex design and product engineering. Large, open plan internal spaces with modern lines combine with a distinctive roofscape of geometric shapes, cantilevers and green roofs. Taylor Lane timber frame specialist supplied and erected its 140mm pre-insulated timber frame kits for phase one of the Acorn Property Group development, Cubis Bruton in Somerset. This phase comprises 31 houses and four two-storey apartment blocks. Across the site there are 11 houses types, each with variations – up to three.

WB TIMBER INNOVATIONS: MILL LODGE To create a contemporary house of 90sqm over two storeys within a plot measuring just 9mx18m is a challenge at any level - but this developer and architect seem to have managed the impossible. It may be a small residence but that hasn’t meant compromising quality and style for the finished project, even though some of these details become complex when supporting brickwork “at height” plus the gable parapets, through to integrated storage areas due to the fully-vaulted roof layout.

CUSTOM & SELF BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR Category: Choosing to build your own home and/or employing a company that specialises in unique one-off projects is complicated, exciting and a huge responsibility. This category seeks to find the best custom-built properties on an individual or small community basis. The finished building should comprise of timber in a fundamental structural way – timber frame, SIPS or solid wood – and should display high levels of technical skill, using timber effectively as an aesthetic, sustainable, energy efficient and reliable way to build a ‘dream home’.

Sponsor: For 30 years, ACTIS the European market leader in the thin multifoil insulation sector has been developing insulation products, created for a clean to use, quick to install, cost effective alternative insulation solution for walls, roofs and floors. The Hybrid range of innovative insulation products which are CE marked and accepted by the NHBC, are tested to European harmonised standards and international standards both under laboratory and real conditions of use; providing you with the confidence that the designed thermal expectations can be actually achieved.

What makes the Hybrid range unlike any other insulation system? Maybe because it’s cleaner, with less waste and environmental impact. Maybe because it’s leaner, saving space and project costs. Or maybe it’s just because it creates a reduction in thermal bridging that provides the most impressive SAP improvements. Whichever way you look at it, the Hybrid range is the future of insulation.

CUSTOM & SELF-BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

ASHTON PORTER ARCHITECTS: NORTH HERTFORDSHIRE GREEN BELT The clients sought to introduce a ‘light filled extension’ which would bridge the gap between the original property and detached garage constructed in the late 20th Century. The new extension is constructed with a timber frame including lightweight, 12mm plywood grid shell ceiling, supporting a sedum roof above. The extension is separated from the existing house with an up and over skylight, with the new cladding surface enveloping the extension and wrapping around the existing garage, to create a harmony between old and new.

BOUNCE ARCHITECTURE: GARDEN ROOM Following being given the all clear from chemotherapy treatment for cancer, the clients goal was to ‘future-proof’ her home for any potential needs. This bespoke garden room was designed to serve multiple uses including a quiet sanctuary for the client aswell as a space for her teenagers to have friends over. The space required toilet facilities, be thermally efficient, have good acoustic performance and have a contemporary feel to it.

BURD HAWARD ARCHITECTS: PRIVATE HOME & STUDIO An intricately planned, confident little building that transforms the quality of the streetscape and provides flexible, sustainable, and delightful interior spaces. Behind the bold, subtly modulated twin gabled façade, a sophisticated interlocking plan responds to the constraints of the site with ease, containing two unexpectedly generous light-filled homes and external green spaces. The highlight is the large open plan first floor studio, where the precisely engineered diagrid roof structure in LVL (Kerto) & cross-laminated timber incorporates generous north facing rooflights and acoustic panels, and creates a dynamic space to live and work, with a distinctive, reimagined industrial loft-like character.

CAMPION DESIGN: ORCHARD HOUSE With the vision to create a beautiful, sustainable and affordable architecture; Orchard House was designed to be zero-carbon and self sufficient by equipping it with a rainwater harvester, solar panels, an air-source heat pump and heat-recovery ventilation. This was still all for just £1000/sqm, in addition to £100s in utility bill savings per year; here we made eco-friendliness synergistic with cost efficiency. It’ll be this aggregate of marginal gains that will help restore our symbiotic relationship with the planet; something more prevalent than ever.

FACIT HOMES: COPPERAS REACH An exemplary piece of contemporary architecture, Copperas Reach is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and capitalises on beautiful surroundings and stunning views. Intended as a sustainable, low energy holiday home that responded to the area. Built with a timber frame and covered in wood cladding, FSC sustainable timber was utilised throughout. Firstly, in the plywood boxes that make up the Facit Chassis™ and secondly in the red cedar cladding that is used for the exterior.

G-FRAME STRUCTURES, KSKA ARCHITECTS & STORA ENSO: ORIGAMI HOUSE Origami House replaces a dilapidated brick-built home office that had little architectural merit except for its unusual polygon shaped footprint, which presented geometric opportunities to re-sculpt the space. In considering the most elegant way to create the roof, while overcoming height constraints of the conservation area, a folded plate roof solution flowed naturally from the existing polygon shape. The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) achieved this and enabled the creation of a spacious, open plan interior uninterrupted by beams which would have been necessary with more traditional methods of construction.

KEBONY: JENNIE MAIZEL’S HOME Blessed with the surrounding natural beauty of two National Parks, a sensitively and sustainably designed new and unique family home combines bold interior design with an elegant facade built with Kebony, a global leader in the production of sustainable modified wood. Characterised by a contextual modern design, Kebony wood was chosen to clad the property, carefully blending with the home’s verdant countryside surrounding to create a beautiful family home befitting of its idyllic location in the heart of Hampshire.

KINGSPAN INSULATION: THE GRAVEN HILL ESTATE, BICESTER With its stunning, angular design and outstanding sustainability credentials, this 5-bedroom self-build embodies the creative design and performance possibilities offered by timber construction. Clad in Canadian Western Red Cedar and fibre cement slate, the design thoughtfully responds to its surroundings, pivoting the upper storey for an optimal view from the spacious balcony. This unique form is made possible through a specification combining structural insulated panels (SIPs) and structural steel.

LODGICO: LAGOM Lagom is a contemporary timber home that demonstrates excellence in the use of structural timber for the fabric of a building. Using cross laminated spruce interlocking logs, with Pavatherm wood fibre insulation board externally and thermo treated external cladding. Lagom is essentially an upside down house, you enter the building at first floor level where there are 3 bedrooms, all en-suite with one also having a sauna attached. Downstairs is fairly open plan kitchen diner with separate living room.

LOOSEHANGER OAK: ARTS AND CRAFTS PROPERTY The brief for this project was to build an oak framed extension. This extension was intended to overcome the current limitations of the property. The existing layout meant that the beautiful views looking out over the Avon Valley to the west could not be enjoyed from the main room of the ground floor. The new extension was to provide a space from which the clients could enjoy the property’s stunning westerly views.

PARAGON OAK: WOOLGREAVES HALL LEISURE COMPLEX A private leisure building with the main element being a substantial structural oak frame, providing the ultimate space to relax and entertain for this active and young family. A visually stunning yet practical building that deals with each requirement of the family. These include the provision of safety for the young children when using the swimming pool, whilst the adults can keep a close eye when using the gym or Sauna plus the environmental improvements to the whole property by connecting the 2 new biomass boilers to other buildings on the estate.

PAUL ARCHER DESIGN: WEST LONDON TOWNHOUSE The clients wanted a design with clear architectural expression. Their brief was for an extended kitchen, dining and family space and well connected to the garden. The new extension sits on a small strip of land between the existing house and adjoining block of flats. The clients desire for a well-designed, well detailed and executed project as well as the unique shape of the site and planning regulations, lead to a sophisticated and highly bespoke timber structure.

THOMAS CARTER: STEEL COW BARN With the highest attention to detail and exacting requirements, our client was keen to keep the traditional features that kept the project unique including the original water butt, whilst producing a luxurious yet family-friendly forever home. Planning approval meant keeping the steel frame and using Kingspan TEK SIPS to give our client the self-build barn conversion of their dreams. With a clear vision, every challenge was overcome and partnering with local companies known by the client, who shared the client’s true eye for perfection, allowed us to accomplish a beautiful, innovative and one-off bespoke home.

TONKIN LIU: WATER TOWER Situated at the edge of the village, the redundant utilitarian structure that was left in a sad state of disrepair has always had a close relationship with the village and its community. The Water Tower now stands proudly above the barley fields, renovated into a delightful house of inventiveness and joyful peculiarity. The main structure was altered as minimally as possible, the addition of timber cantilevered staircase rising through the tower into the tank offers panoramic views of the landscape.

EDUCATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

ARCHITYPE: HARRIS ACADEMY SUTTON This state-of-the-art facility combines the cutting-edge scientific endeavours of the London Cancer Hub site, with a holistic and natural approach to design, showcasing the best in environmental materials and highlighting the many aesthetic and practical uses for timber in architecture. The STEAM-focused school makes a convincing case for wood - from the elegant timber cladding to the soothing exposed soffits that ensures the sustainability vernacular is expressed in every area of the school site. Students benefit from ‘university-style’ learning in a mature and respectful setting, enhanced by the surrounding materiality.

BURRELL FOLEY FISCHER: PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, HURSTPIERPOINT COLLEGE The new 370 seat performing arts centre at Hurstpierpoint College, which has the oldest Shakespeare Society in the country, provides a state-of-the-art theatre facility that is both beautiful and environmentally responsible. The use of structural timber – CLT and Glulam - for the complete building significantly contributed to a quick and economic construction process, leading to completion of the project on time and within budget. The environmental benefits of timber have resulted in a low embodied-carbon building which requires a minimum of energy to operate.

DAVID MORLEY: KING’S COLLEGE SCHOOL The swimming pool comprises part of a mix of new buildings and the remodelling of existing facilities at King’s College School’s 20-acre site in Wimbledon. The ambition was to create a building which is respectful of the context and embodies and promotes a sense of movement and activity, revealing the beauty of water. The complex comprises three linked pavilions, with a six-court sports hall and the six-lane, 25m swimming pool flanking a two-storey central pavilion housing the reception, changing rooms, viewing galleries, a strength and conditioning suite, gym and exercise studio.

ENGENUITI: THE KENNEDY BUILDING A new flexible and sustainable home for the University of Kent, the building maximises the advantages of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as floors and cores in a hybrid construction with a steel frame. This option was found to be both the most economic and sustainable option. The reduction in building weight due to the CLT allowed a shallow foundation solution to be adopted, reducing time, cost and concrete. Above ground level, all wet trades were almost eliminated leading to a clean and quick construction that saw the building water-tight within six months on site.

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL: STONEHAM PARK PRIMARY ACADEMY Stoneham Park Primary Academy is the pilot project for the Hampshire County Council standard model ‘schoolhouse’. Conceived as a lean, compact and energy efficient two-storey form the building is modest in scale and future-proofed for expansion to the east. The building superstructure uses a unique Streif timber frame cassette system manufactured off-site. This allowed accurate and fast assembly on site and from slab level to substantial water-tightness the construction was completed in six weeks.

EDUCATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

INNOVARÉ SYSTEMS: ABBEY VIEW PRIMARY ACADEMY The benefits of structural timber construction were realised when main contractor Morgan Sindall teamed up with Innovaré to create an innovative design that delivered a high-performance building. The design champions the use of Innovaré’s awardwinning i-SIPS. The offsite manufactured i-SIP System outperforms traditional building methods, accelerates project delivery, reduces waste and improves sustainability. The first phase of Abbey View Primary Academy now provides 210 primary and 26 pre-school children with a first-class facility with the potential to grow in line with the surrounding population to ultimately accommodate 472 students.

INNOVARÉ SYSTEMS: KINGSTEIGNTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Delivered under the Priority Schools Building Programme, Kingsteignton Primary School seamlessly interconnects education zones delivering adaptable spaces which promote teaching and learning. The design champions the use of Innovaré’s award-winning i-SIPS. The Innovaré team managed the structural design, manufacture and installation to meet performance specifications defined in the Optimum Schools protocols. The project was delivered 50% faster than other proposed build methods. From concept to completion – the development achieved both cost and programme certainty, ensuring the new £5m state-of-the-art school opened on time and within budget.

KIER CONSTRUCTION, EURBAN & FRANK SHAW ASSOCIATES: NORTHSTOWE EDUCATION CAMPUS The £42m Northstowe Education Campus consists of a secondary school with accompanying SEN along with enhanced sports and leisure facilities to serve the growing new community. An exemplar design was required to suit Cambridgeshire County Council’s aspirations and the demands of the local masterplan. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) was the chosen structural solution for three reasons; speed of construction, sustainability and interior design. CLT enabled fast track construction, with good thermal properties, low air leakage and a natural aesthetic where it’s left exposed.

SCOTT BROWNRIGG: ST GEORGE’S ACTIVITY CENTRE The innovative, freeform Glulam roof pushes the limits of structural timber to create a wave-like form that blends into the landscape, satisfying the client’s desire to meet Green Belt constraints, and complement the surrounding woodland. By utilising Virtual Reality during the design process and off-site construction methods, the completed building has been designed and constructed with innovation, collaboration, and sustainability at its core. The structure requires little energy to produce and binds large volumes of carbon from the atmosphere into the building structure.

WILKINSONEYRE: THE DYSON IET WilkinsonEyre has completed a new undergraduate village for the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). The landscaped village of timber modular housing pods, with communal amenities and a central social and learning hub, is based within the Dyson Malmesbury Campus in Wiltshire. As well as establishing a new typology in student accommodation, the project makes innovative use of cross-laminated timber as a structural component with an internal self-finish highly suitable for natural and welcoming interior spaces.

CARPENTER OAK: NOAH’S ARK CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital is a new building that provides spaces for spaces for palliative care, relaxation and adventure for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families, as well as offices for the charity. Carpenter Oak designed, hand made and raised the green oak framed atrium that welcomes visitors into the building, providing an inspirational heart of the charity’s operations.

HEATHERWICK STUDIO: ST JAMES’S UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, LEEDS Set in the midst of medical buildings, the site was one of few green spaces left on the campus. The studio decided to preserve and accentuate this space by creating the structure out of the garden itself. The centre is expressed as a grouping of large-scale planters of varying sizes. The base of each planter encloses a distinct private counselling room for visitors to meet or spend time by themselves, while the areas between offer relaxed and approachable social spaces for group conversation and activities.

STORA ENSO, HAVERSTOCK ARCHITECTS & EURBAN: LINDEN FARM Linden Farm is a supported living development for ten young adults with autism and high support needs. The principles of inclusive design are embedded into every detail of the project as a key part of the brief was to create a safe, yet homely and nurturing environment for the tenants who have complex sensory needs. A strong objective was to ensure that the development is in no way institutional in feel or aesthetics and this has been achieved with the help of the exposed CLT walls and ceilings that feature widely throughout.

ARCHITECTURE UNKNOWN: SCOUT HALL The 2nd Whalley Range Scouts are centred on their community, busily investing in children’s futures and full of hope. Our aim for their new Scout Hall was simply to reflect all of these aims. We realised these aims by utilising the Wikihouse system, a novel Modern Method of Manufacture that uses only WISA structural plywood, a mallet, screws and heaps of enthusiasm from over 120 local volunteers of all ages who together created a beautiful, simple building which has become rooted in its community despite being only recently completed.

B&K STRUCTURES: SKELTON LAKE Skelton Lake is a new concept for motorway services. This scheme is home to a wide range of food and beverage outlets together with an extensive retail and leisure offering as well as a business centre. B&K Structures was appointed to design, fabricate and install the structural system for Skelton Lake which features exposed long span glulam beams and cross laminated timber panels together with an ambitious roof formed from timber cassettes and curved glulam beams – supported by Y shaped steel columns. The structure is topped off with an undulating sedum roof.

CABU: CABU BY THE SEA CABU by the Sea is a seafront holiday and showroom village which has stood derelict since 2009. Replenished with 13 architecturally designed and structurally engineered energy efficient modular timber cabins carefully dispersed around the 4.6-acre landscape. Whilst achieving buildings regulations compliance for new dwellings, the lightweight prefabricated solution of glulam frame with timber composite insulated panels provide high aesthetics married with a variety of external coverings for walls, from timber to brick, and for the roof from timber, slate and corrugated metal which explore customised individuality.

CONSTRUCTIONAL TIMBER: PREMIAIR, MANCHESTER Constructional Timber was tasked with the design, manufacturing and installation of Glulam beams and timber framed panels. The main aim of the project was to open a bespoke exclusive private terminal for passengers which helped in delivering convenience and a premium experience to the customer. It is clear to see that the Glulam beams used in this project assisted in adding an element of class and sophistication to the structure, whilst also lowering the carbon footprint of the building compared to other forms of construction.

ECKERSLEY O’CALLAGHAN: THE PROMEGA HEADQUARTERS The Promega Headquarters showcases the versatility, beauty, strength and quality of Beech Hardwood LVL. Only a handful of buildings built with this type of wood exist in the UK. Yet the characteristics of the material allowed us to show off two extremes of use – large cross section, long beam elements and the fine detailed finishing achievable on a smaller scale for a beautiful feature staircase. The roof beams are the longest Beech LVL beams used in the UK to date.

ELLIOTT WOOD: 92-120 NOTTING HILL GATE This project involves the re-use, refurbishment and vertical extension of the prominent ‘North Block’ building originally constructed in the late 1950’s in the ‘International Style’ of architecture on Notting Hill Gate. The works have provided 3914m2 of sustainable and flexible office space by constructing a new stone, terracotta and glazed extension on top of existing buildings - all whilst the ground and first floor retail units remained in use. The hybrid engineered timber, steel (and existing concrete) building now boasts the largest single office floorplate in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

EURBAN, WEBB YATES ENGINEERS & DMFK ARCHITECTS: YORK HOUSE The client asked their architects to transform and extend the existing somber 1980s block into a modern, light filled co-working space with state of the art facilities. dMFK Architects’ ingenious solution was to extend the anonymous block, not only upwards - but outwards, towards the street. An extra storey has been added on the roof; and a section of the front façade has been punched out to connect to a new 5 storey element that protrudes eight metres into the generous forecourt of the building, reaching out to the pavement.

G-FRAME STRUCTURES, HK ARCHITECTS, PIVETEAU BOIS & HEYNE TILLETT STEEL: NO. 2 MAIDENHEAD OFFICE PARK This two-storey extension was designed to offer a competitive advantage in a difficult commercial lettings market, creating a contemporary and visually striking workplace. The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam notonly reduced the builds overall carbon footprint but also provides the building with a soft, natural connection to the garden and existing courtyard, while exposed timber in the interior offers a contrast to the traditional standard office finishing, creating a space that nurtures staff wellbeing.

HEYNE TILLETT STEEL & STUDIO RHE: REPUBLIC MASTERPLAN The Republic Masterplan comprises the retrofit of two large-scale existing office buildings alongside the revitalised public realm. The masterplan champions the use of engineered timber within the commercial sector to create sustainable and beautifully crafted workplaces. To reuse the existing building without additional strengthening to the foundations, cross laminated and glue laminated timber elements were used to extend and refurbish the existing structure. Installed through the atriums of both the Import and Export buildings, a nine-storey timber-framed extension has revitalised the existing space and created new collaborative working areas.

STORA ENSO, CALFORDSEADEN ARCHITECTS, B&K STRUCTURES & NIBLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTORS: POPLAR WORKS Poplar Works is a unique multi-million pound fashion and ‘makery’ hub combining manufacturing, training and affordable studio space, together with a community accessible café, events space and garden area. Use of CLT overcame challenging logistical restrictions posed by the narrow shape of the site and its proximity to the A12 on one side and residential properties on the other. The hybrid system of CLT and steel in the café space has enabled the creation of a striking double height sawtooth roof and aesthetically, the natural look and feel of CLT has been embraced throughout.

CONSTRUCTIONAL TIMBER & MCLAUGHLIN & HARVEY CONSTRUCTION: IKEA GREENWICH In Partnership with McLaughlin & Harvey Construction, Constructional Timber was tasked with the design, supply, manufacture and install of IKEA Greenwich. Winner of the Sustainability leaders’ awards for building/Infrastructure of the year IKEA Greenwich consisted of; a Siberian Larch Glulam brise soleil façade, a pair of Siberian larch, cranked rooflights as well as a Siberian larch and Spruce CLT roof pavilion. Our works assisted in achieving the company’s most sustainable store they have ever built.

HEWITT STUDIOS: MORGAN MOTOR COMPANY EXPERIENCE CENTRE Hewitt Studios were invited by the Morgan Motor Company to reimagine their ageing Cafe, Museum and Showroom spaces as an exciting new visitor Experience Centre. Our solution had a strong focus on sustainability - a series of low-carbon interventions designed to improve building thermal performance, increase natural daylight, reduce energy consumption, reduce surface water run-off and provide for end-of-life recycling of materials. These interventions all utilise the same inexpensive, off-the-shelf industrial product (Kerto LVL), which has been manipulated to achieve a variety of outcomes.

STORA ENSO, ANTA ARCHITECTS & EURBAN: EILEAN DONAN CASTLE Eilean Donan Castle is dramatically located on a small island at the meeting point of three great sea lochs at the Kyle of Localsh. The castle re-opened its doors & introduced its new Visitor Centre on 5 August. The new building abuts the original visitor centre creating an enclosed courtyard to protect visitors from the prevailing south westerly winds. CLT’s ability to cantilever enabled the creation of a clean extension of the roof that oversails the gable ends by almost 3 metres at either end providing visitors with much needed protection as transactions take place below.

STUDIO LIME: NEWTON FARM FOODS Newton Farm Foods is a popular farm shop and café; the farm produce quality meats and vegetables to sell in the farm shop, serve in the café and supply to local businesses. The existing café is a 19th century dairy building, with thick, white lias limestone walls with a simple, exposed timber apex roof. The new extension contrasts with the existing and is divided into two distinct blocks; the taller, pitched roofed cafe seating block; and a lower, flat roof entrance block that connects the new and old buildings, whilst accommodating the staff and support areas.

This entry relates specifically to the ‘Welcome Building’ at RHS Garden Bridgewater, where Hodder + Partners were invited to design a new world-class visitor centre providing a gateway to the gardens as well as a visitor meeting and interaction point, restaurant, gift shop, offices and educational spaces. The ‘Welcome Building’ has been delivered by BAM as the main contractor with HESS TIMBER providing the engineering, production and assembly of the structural timber elements.

IDEAL MODULAR HOMES & SHEDKM: OURHOME Created by Ideal Modular Homes and designed by award-winning architects, shedkm, OURhome is a collaborative approach for high-quality, affordable living through sustainable methods of construction, aimed at housing associations, councils and developers. OURhome provides greater flexibility and accessibility by offering various orientations and layouts to meet modern living requirements. With a key focus on environmental sustainability and placemaking, OURhome is the UK’s leading energy efficient, affordable housing solution.

WB TIMBER INNOVATIONS: VISITOR ATTRACTOR PROJECT Carmarthen County Council has been seeking the opportunity to maximise the tourism value by building a new landmark low-energy museum right on the coast. Together with a new passive house hostel this forms a Visitor Attractor project with the original (rebuilt) record-holding car - BABS - securely housed in state-of-the-art surroundings. As the project is funded by European Regional Development Awards there was a requirement for these public buildings to be impressive architectural statement buildings and crucially had to meet passive-house performance levels.

ZED PODS: HOPE RISE In collaboration with Bristol City Council, BHF and the YMCA “Hope Rise” has been designed as the first 100% affordable & zero-carbon housing scheme, built above an existing car park in Chalks Road. Using our unique design and high-quality housing modules, we have built 11 energy-positive, permanent new homes above a car park whilst retaining parking spaces beneath. This was possible as the development takes advantage of the air rights above a council owned car park, the land cost has been removed making it the first 100% socially rented development of its kind in the country.

ZÜBLIN TIMBER: STROUD CHAPEL Stroud Chapel is a warm and inviting place of worship for the Christian Community. Created from cross laminated timber (CLT) panels and glulam beams the new building meets their specific design guidance for symmetry, light and movement. The outcome is elegant structural folded engineered timber plates which are proportioned to allow the smooth flow of forces from the vaulted ceiling to the ground. Within the chapel no two planes meet at right angles and therefore required an acute attention to tolerance and detail. The space is used not only for worship but also by the local community.

SIMPSON & BROWN: BRITAIN’S FIRST SAINT - TELLING THE WHOLE STORY PROJECT The client set a challenging yet exciting brief – to design and construct a new visitor ‘Welcome Centre’ that will sympathetically connect the Grade I listed main Cathedral building to its 1980s Chapter House, and provide much-needed Learning Centre accommodation and modern facilities to support the varying needs of the Cathedral congregation, education groups, visitors and staff. Set within the archaeologicallysensitive ‘Monk’s Graveyard’ site in Sumpter Yard, the Welcome Centre provides a new visitor entrance, retail space, interpretation and exhibition areas, the relocated Vestry, and creates new level access between the main Cathedral and Chapter House.

BENNETTS ASSOCIATES: THE KING’S CROSS SPORTS HALL The King’s Cross Sports Hall is an all-timber building with ‘near zero’ embodied carbon with a sub-structure that rests gently on the rail tunnels serving King’s Cross. The building has been designed for multiple lives – it is highly adaptable with a long lifespan and ultimately becoming a community sports facility for LB Camden. It will start off as a construction skills centre providing local people with access to training and jobs. The warm and welcoming timber interior has key spaces on either side of a spine of interconnected social spaces.

HODDER & PARTNERS: RHS GARDEN BRIDGEWATER RHS Garden Bridgewater is the largest gardening project in Europe and will be a major new tourism and horticultural destination.

MEB DESIGN: HOE BRIDGE SCHOOL DINING HALL EXTENSION This innovative CLT structure created a stunning light, airy and flexible space for the School to enjoy views of the adjacent 17th century mansion building and historic grounds. The Performing Arts Centre and Dining room was designed with external larch cladding on the CLT Structure to create both a contemporary façade as well as having excellent sustainable credentials.

ARUP: KINGS CROSS SPORTS HALL Arup are the Structural and Geotechnical engineers for the Kings Cross Sports Hall, in one of the most pivotal redevelopments in London, successfully delivering on the challenge of creating a “as light as possible” building. This was achieved by pushing the limits of both the concrete substructure and timber design. Arup played a central role, ensuring the engineering constraints relating to the sensitive tunnels were embraced by the whole team. The elegant and efficient timber structure is designed to provide a modern sport hall and fitness facility, whilst minimising the impact on the historical rail tunnels.

CORBETT & TASKER: STROUD CHAPEL Stroud Chapel is a warm and inviting place of worship for the Christian Community. Created from CLT panels and glulam beams the new building meets their specific design guidance for symmetry, light and movement.

ELLIOTT WOOD: GUILDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL CREMATORIUM Elliott Wood provided the structural and civil engineering design input to deliver a striking new crematorium facility for Guildford Borough Council, replacing the existing crematorium which had reached the end of its useful life. The completed building features a stunning vaulted roof and beautiful courtyard gardens. An array of natural materials was used including oak and York stone. Exposed concrete, masonry and timber were used to form the chapel roof.

HEYNE TILLETT STEEL: REPUBLIC MASTERPLAN The Republic Masterplan comprises the retrofit of two existing office buildings and the creation of a new vibrant, biodiverse public realm. The delivery of the Import and Export buildings required a series of innovative and bespoke structural solutions and was key to the project’s success. The use of cross laminated and glue laminated timber to form the new lightweight structures, increased the lettable floor area without any additional strengthening work required to the foundations, reducing the programme and lowering embodied energy.

DYSON: THE DYSON IET WilkinsonEyre has completed a new undergraduate village for the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). The landscaped village of timber modular housing pods, with communal amenities and a central social and learning hub, is based within the Dyson Malmesbury Campus in Wiltshire. As well as establishing a new typology in student accommodation, the project makes innovative use of cross laminated timber as a structural component with an internal self-finish highly suitable for natural and welcoming interior spaces.

MAGGIE’S: MAGGIE’S, LEEDS Set in the midst of medical buildings, the site was one of few green spaces left on the campus. The studio decided to preserve and accentuate this space by creating the structure out of the garden itself. The centre is expressed as a grouping of largescale planters of varying sizes. The base of each planter encloses a distinct private counselling room for visitors to meet or spend time by themselves, while the areas between offer relaxed and approachable social spaces for group conversation and activities.

ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (RHS): RHS GARDEN BRIDGEWATER RHS Garden Bridgewater is the largest gardening project in Europe and will be a major new tourism and horticultural destination. The ‘Welcome Building’ has been delivered by BAM as the main contractor.

THE OFFICE GROUP: YORK HOUSE The client asked their architects to transform and extend the existing somber 1980s block into a modern, light filled co-working space with state of the art facilities. dMFK Architects’ ingenious solution was to extend the anonymous block, not only upwards - but outwards, towards the street. An extra storey has been added on the roof; and a section of the front façade has been punched out to connect to a new 5 storey element that protrudes eight metres into the generous forecourt of the building, reaching out to the pavement.

VALLEYS KIDS: LITTLE BRYN GWYN PROJECT The Valleys Kids Little Bryn Gwyn Project is a brand-new residential centre. It will accommodate groups of all ages and enable them to experience life changing activities in a national park, an opportunity otherwise denied by their situation. The new building’s structure is timber, some of which designed to be built by the very people who will use the building, a way to provide skills and increase self-esteem. The building is designed to create an organic and sympathetic backdrop and is intended to be accessible, welcoming, non-institutional and timeless.

BAM CONSTRUCTION: KINGS CROSS BUILDING Q2 BAM Construction are the Main Contraction for Kings Cross Building Q2 which has been built as a permanent Sports Hall facility for London Borough of Camden. The building has been designed to be as light as possible due the three parallel tunnels running below the site. The lightweight design was achieved by combining a bespoke super-lightweight concrete mix, in additional to utilising a CLT structure. BAM played a central role, coordinating all works and procuring all trades and design consultants whilst ensuring that the engineering constraints of the building were appreciated by all team members.

EE SMITH CONTRACTS: THE LONDONER HOTEL Branded as the ‘Worlds first super boutique Hotel’ we are honoured to be the leading interior contractor for The Londoner Hotel. At £35million, this is our biggest contract in our 123-year history, awarded by one of our longest standing clients, Edwardian Hotels. With cutting edge New York design combined with quality architecture, the interiors are modern & distinctive, making us even more thrilled to be part of this milestone project. Our design-development & production team have been crucial to the success of the manufacture of so many unusual, never seen before concepts across the hotel.

GALLIFORD TRY: REPUBLIC MASTERPLAN The Republic Masterplan comprises the retrofit of two large-scale existing office buildings alongside the revitalised public realm.

KIER CONSTRUCTION, EURBAN & FRANK SHAW ASSOCIATES: NORTHSTOWE EDUCATION CAMPUS The 42m Northstowe Education Campus consists of a secondary school with accompanying SEN along with enhanced sports and leisure facilities to serve the growing new community.

MORGAN SINDALL: STONEHAM PARK PRIMARY ACADEMY Stoneham Park Primary Academy is the pilot project for the Hampshire standard model ‘schoolhouse’ prioritising a quality education environment within a sustainable building. A compact and energy-efficient design which reduces operating has been achieved through offsite manufacturing and utilises the innovative Streif timber frame system, a robust and highly sustainable timber frame construction that is based on low carbon/ energy use and ‘fabric-first’ design principles. This system also allows the future extension to easily join on to the existing school with minimal disruption.

G-FRAME STRUCTURES: NO. 2 MAIDENHEAD OFFICE PARK This two-storey extension was designed to offer a competitive advantage in a difficult commercial lettings market, creating a contemporary and visually striking workplace. The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam not only reduced the builds overall carbon footprint but also provides the building with a soft, natural connection to the garden and existing courtyard, while exposed timber in the interior offers a contrast to the traditional standard office finishing, creating a space that nurtures staff wellbeing.

PLOTFORM: DELAMERE VISITOR CENTRE Delamere Visitor Centre, Cheshire is an impressive CLT and glulam structure, erected to a high standard in just three weeks. This visitor hub and gateway to the forest provided a challenge from an installation perspective. The main feature of the superstructure is the series of glulam trusses that were required to form the roof structure over the cafe area. In order to form the required roof geometry, some of the glulam trusses were needed to support others, thereby creating a secondary and primary truss concord. Sequence was key.

WIEHAG: ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE IN WEYBRIDGE The entry is for installation of the Glulam & Cross Laminated Timber roof structure for the new 4,000m2 activity centre at St George’s College in Weybridge, which was commissioned to mark the 150th Anniversary of the school. The complex roof is a bi-directionally curved, freeform glulam & CLT structure and is formed from two layers of Glulam members which give a unique and exciting appearance which pushes the limits of structural timber to create a wave-like form that blends into the landscape.

TIMBER FRAME PROJECT OF THE YEAR

TIMBER FRAME PROJECT OF THE YEAR Category: The Timber Frame Project of the Year will be awarded to the overall highest scoring entry for a project built using Timber Frame technology. Modern timber frame structures are precision-engineered, strong and durable. The build method relies on a factory manufactured timber frame as a means of structural support – carrying the loads imposed by the floors and roofs, before transmitting them to the foundations, which can be built at a lower cost due to the buildings being lightweight.

Sponsor: Kronospan are the largest Wood Based Panel Manufacturer in the World with over 40 production sites globally. Kronospan has demonstrated its commitment to the UK construction market with a high-capacity T&G line which features diamond tooling and high quality protected floor brands Fast Clean and Fast Protect. Both feature BBA approval for 60 days exposure. All Type P5 boards use the very highest levels of post-consumer recycled wood allowing customers to construct with a conscience. Kronospan UK also supply OSB and new Ultra Ply Plywood.

CLT: THE ROUTE TO NET ZERO CONSTRUCTION Decarbonising construction to produce more sustainable and better performing buildings will be crucial to creating a more viable ecological future. The innovative use of natural materials such as cross laminated timber (CLT) can help to deliver highquality, high-density buildings without compromising the environment. The offsite manufacture of engineered timber components is a fast-track construction method that: • Is natural, renewable and far less energy-intensive to produce • Creates a natural carbon store through sequestration • Produces highly airtight energy efficient building envelopes • Reduces the overall carbon footprint of a building by up to 75% • Improves productivity and minimises waste and deliveries to site

The UK has a magnificent heritage of timber architecture dating back to the thirteenth century – B&K Structures is now building on this legacy using ground-breaking hybrid engineered timber systems to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
