COMPANY NEWS Announcing Our Latest Awards Success! HOUSEBUILDER PRODUCT AWARDS We were recently announced winners of the Best External Product for our loadbearing Thrubuild® system range at the prestigious Housebuilder Product Awards. Now in their ninth year, the awards supported by HBF and NHBC, are judged by a panel of leading experts from the housebuilding industry. Beating off stiff competition, the judges were impressed with our ‘all in one’ certified solution which addresses some of the key challenges faced by the housing industry. Thrubuild® scored highly for its safety, time and cost benefits, together with the demonstration of 60, 90 and 120-minute fire resistance options.
OFFSITE AWARDS Thrubuild® was also Highly HIGHLY COMMENDED BEST USE OF STEEL Commended in the Best Use of Steel category in the 2021 Offsite Construction Awards for its specification in the Huddersfield Renaissance Works project. Thrubuild® was used to best effect to maximise space via the three-storey extension on top of the existing building. Offering multiple loadbearing applications, Thrubuild® was used for external and internal walls, internal and separating floors.
STRENGTHENING ETEX NEW WAYS DIVISION Etex’s vision is to be at the forefront of the digital and sustainable transformation of the construction industry, particularly in the area of offsite building solutions. In 2020, Etex launched the New Ways division and realised several acquisitions in Europe and Latin America. Those efforts are now reinforced with the recent acquisition of Sigmat a market leader in the UK light steel frame sector. This complements the purchase of Irish design and engineering consultancy firm Evolusion Innovation and Irish light steel frame provider Horizon Offsite. By acquiring Sigmat and Horizon, New Ways expands its light steel frame and offsite solutions footprint in the UK. These strategic acquisitions, together with its existing UK-based EOS business, firmly establishes the division as a major force in the light steel frame sector.

CASE STUDY Riverside Quarter, Wandsworth
CONSTRUCTION PARTNERS
OVERVIEW
Client Frasers Property
Riverside Quarter in Wandsworth is a £250 million mixed use development located on the south bank of the River Thames. Delivered in four phases, it comprises six buildings ranging from 11 to 15 storeys, as well as commercial accommodation and leisure spaces.
Main Contractor Galliford Try Architect Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher Steel Framing Systems Supplier EOS Type of Solution Pre-Assembled Frames (PAF) Light Steel Frame Non-Loadbearing Infill System

Galliford Try has been working with Frasers Property to deliver the prestigious project with construction work starting in 2014 and finishing in January 2020. The project has created over 750 new apartments, including 197 affordable homes. Pioneering a new systems approach, the final phase of Riverside Quarter was the first development in the UK to specify our Pre-Assembled Frames (PAF) – a non-loadbearing infill system.

SYSTEMS APPROACH
MITIGATING RISK The performance of building materials is under an unprecedented spotlight. Architects, designers, specifiers and ultimately, clients – are feeling exposed. We believe material providers should have full-scale testing regimes that study the performance of products working together to see how they interact in ‘real’ circumstances, like under fire conditions or when exposed to wind and rain.
After rigorous testing of the complete system, Pre-Assembled Frames achieved 60-minute fire resistance and was awarded a product and performance 30-year Etex warranty following a specification and validation process. This approach provided the Riverside Quarter specifiers with complete confidence and peace of mind knowing that the PAF system has been subjected to relevant testing for fire, acoustic, weathering, energy efficiency, airtightness, durability and mechanical performance. Meeting building performance requirements in a unitised solution, the systems were delivered to the Riverside Quarter site as assembled panelised units. The system performance balance was achieved through tested configurations of factory prefabricated light steel frame and Siniat Weather Defence external sheathing together with site applied glass mineral wool insulation at a minimum thickness of 100mm and Siniat internal wall lining. Just in time deliveries reduced the requirement for site storage and the systems approach reduced cutting and reworks onsite. Installation from inside the concrete mainframe enhanced Health and Safety by reducing working externally at height and also offered vast savings for the Riverside Quarter development by reducing mast climber and scaffolding requirements.

Delivering crucial cost and time benefits making programme savings of up to 30%, the prefabrication of the individual steel elements took place under controlled, highly regulated and safe factory conditions. With so much work completed offsite, the onsite construction schedule for Riverside Quarter was reduced – delivering a faster return on investment for Frasers Property.

VIEWPOINT – APPI HOMES
EOS AND APPI – THE START OF THE JOURNEY! Appi want to change the UK housing market by becoming an integral solution that enables the housing crisis to be addressed and to significantly reduce the current shortage of housing and homelessness issues. We are uncompromising in our mission but understand we cannot do it alone. We demand that those who want to be part of helping us scale up our MMC solution believe in our mission too. EOS have done just that! Our founder and chairman, Derek Davies first met Steve Thompson at an exhibition and quickly identified that EOS and the wider Etex organisation were ideal partners for Appi. The unique Etex Thrubuild® 30-year warranty provides instant credibility for the Appi product and peace of mind for customers. But there were also a number of synergies with how EOS and Appi sought to do business, in collaboration and with the mission of delivering real-value to the offsite market.
Appi - supported by EOS have developed a truly scalable, precision-engineered solution for the housing crisis – with the structure of all our homes being supplied by EOS.
Having conducted extensive R&D, Appi identified many drawbacks to a volumetric solution – the original concept. Concluding that developing a standardised product range with components manufactured on demand by third parties would provide the optimum MMC solution. With a robust supply chain in place, components are delivered for on-site assembly following manufacturing disciplines – thus providing precision engineered homes capable of being assembled at scale without recourse to traditional trades. EOS and Appi have a formal strategic partnership and have worked closely together to develop the initial Appi range. Etex owned Evolusion Innovation have provided technical and engineering support throughout the product development process that has been invaluable to Appi. The ability to access this expertise ‘in-house’ has greatly simplified the process of achieving SAP ratings and dealing with matters such as fire stopping and cold bridging. Appi are looking forward to putting our first homes on site early next year and to fulfilling our fast-expanding pipeline of orders thereafter - in partnership with EOS and Etex.

How do we do MMC differently? We focus on the engineering aspect of an offsite technology, producing a scalable solution that is centred around manufacturing – rather than development of housing.
