TALL BUILDINGS CONFERENCE
WELCOME TO THE TALL BUILDINGS CONFERENCE 2020 We are delighted that Tall Buildings Conference is returning for the second year, which to meet the current Covid-19 restrictions, is taking place as a ‘Virtual Conference & Exhibition’. This year’s conference has also seen the addition of the Tall Buildings Awards – information on which you can find in the second half of this event brochure. TALL BUILDINGS CONFERENCE is intended to assist engineers in understanding the common challenges associated with transferring standard engineering principles and knowledge from low-rise structures to tall buildings. Tall Buildings Conference will highlight design and building technology innovation in the UK high-rise sector – facilitating learning and knowledge transfer plus providing a platform for discussion and debate. This brochure will guide you through the conference agenda and the impressive portfolio of speaker projects and exhibitor products. As event organisers we have been truly humbled by the ongoing support from all participants – Speakers, Delegates, Sponsors and Exhibitors - and wish to offer our thanks for your patience and understanding during this challenging year. TALL BUILDINGS AWARDS
WELCOME TO THE TALL BUILDINGS AWARDS 2020 The Tall Buildings Awards will celebrate those that are developing unique design and engineering solutions to maximise space in city centres where demand is high whilst creating a legacy of iconic superstructures that are transforming the UK’s built environment. 2020 has presented many personal and business challenges but in spite of this unparalleled situation, the awards organisers have been determined the event must go ahead. To meet the current restrictions, the Tall Buildings Awards have been integrated into the virtual Tall Buildings Conference agenda – and are being hosted by awards judge – Mark Wakeford. The following pages of the event brochure will guide you through the impressive portfolio of projects that have been shortlisted for the 2020 Tall Buildings Awards. Our fantastic sponsors have made contributions that are powering the success of the awards. A huge thank you to each organisation that sponsored the 2020 virtual ceremony. Details on the sponsors can be found throughout this brochure. Another big thank you goes to the Tall Buildings Awards judges – whose task is so incredibly difficult. 2020 marks the first year of the Tall Buildings Awards and has demonstrated that even in these incredibly difficult circumstances the event is important to celebrate the organisations shaping the cities skylines. And finally, thank you to all of our entrants, who really made the launch year of the Tall Buildings Awards the success that they are today. Without you all this would not be possible. Thank you for joining us – we hope your families and businesses are doing well in these challenging times and it is good to have somethings so positive to celebrate. THE TALL BUILDINGS AWARDS TEAM

Over a 1,000 units of student accommodation have been created in this flagship building known as Horizon Heights. This building has been awarded BREEAM Excellent standard for sustainability. We have worked with Unite Students to create a landmark development ranging in height of between 19 and 22 storeys. It includes two ground floor retail units in addition to the student accommodation. The unified public realm forges strong connections between the student accommodation and its surroundings whilst providing a functional, attractive and engaging environment for students.
HODDER+PARTNERS: DUNCAN HOUSE Best Tall Building Architect
Duncan House is a mixed-use development by the Watkin Jones Group, consisting of 511 student bedrooms for University of London and 45 residential apartments, (half of which are affordable); affordable commercial space and education accommodation with functions distributed between a 31-storey tower and a podium base with spaces and functions arranged to avoid overlooking or privacy issues between uses. The human scaled podium block defines the street edge and responds to the lower rise buildings surrounding the site.
HTA DESIGN: WOOD WHARF B2 Best Tall Building Architect
The structural design of Wood Wharf B2 overcomes several significant challenges posed by this complex tall building, on a “site that’s not really a site.” The circa 21 storey structure is “sandwiched” between the water to the east and existing structures to the west, so an offsite solution was the only sensible approach. Designed to withstand both a ship and lorry impact, the building consists of retail/ amenity areas in the lower levels, with 17 storeys of volumetric modular serviced apartments and a rooftop restaurant above.

We were initially invited to assist Morgan Sindall with a 2-stage tender for a two 20 storey tower development, one residential, one hotel in 2014. However, the project at that stage was not commercially viable and the client sought significant savings which required a critical review of the existing designs to identify any potential savings. We revisited the structural layout and all structural element sizes which we were able to significantly reduce, making a 10% saving on construction cost.
MJH STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS: 101 GEORGE STREET Best Tall Building Structural Engineer
MJH Structural Engineers developed a new type of volumetric modular system that can construct modular buildings over 40 stories, showing that what was previously considered aspirational heights of construction for the offsite industry are now possible. This new system shares all the benefits that have come to be expected of a volumetric modular system: expediated and more certain construction programmes; reductions in the number of personnel on site; design flexibility; reduced movements to site; reduced construction waste; greater material efficiency; reduced C02 emissions and high quality construction details constructed to rigorous QC procedures.

The building is clad with articulated fins that create a moiré effect reflecting the water that surrounds the site. This effect means that the façade changes as an observer passes around the building.
TIDE CONSTRUCTION & VISION MODULAR SYSTEMS: 101 GEORGE STREET Best Residential Tall Building Project
Developed by Tide Construction, this landmark development was delivered in record timescales using the best of modern methods of construction. ONE Creative environments (ONE) is proud to be a finalist and a sponsor of the Tall Buildings 2020 Awards. ONE’s multi-award-winning “virtual mockup” concept is a perfect solution for projects where there is repeatability or high risk – typically found on tall buildings. Traditionally, project teams build physical mockups of critical areas in order to test buildability, compliance, finish, specification and construction sequencing – the virtual mockup performs these checks digitally at a fraction of the cost and time, whilst also bringing additional benefits. Enquire today to explore the benefits of a virtual mockup on your project.

BEST TALL BUILDING RETROFIT OR REFURBISHED PROJECT
CATEGORY SPONSOR
GLOBAL HSE SOLUTIONS: LIBERTY QUAYS REFURBISHMENT Best Tall Building Retrofit or Refurbished Project
Following an intensive survey, identifying issues with the fire protection and compartmentation of the 17-storey building, Global HSE, part of the Global Group were instructed to carry out a full refurbishment to the passive fire protection. Liberty Quays is a 17-storey building, purpose built for student accommodation. The block, located in the centre of Southampton, consists of 562 en-suite rooms, allowing students the privacy of a private room but with the social element of a shared kitchen and living area.
K SYSTEMS – KILWAUGHTER MINERALS: FITZWARREN COURT Best Tall Building Retrofit or Refurbished Project
The block was scheduled for demolition under a £120m regeneration plan for the area mooted in 2016, but this was halted the same year when the housing association secured funds to modernise the block. This project showcased innovation and the adaptability of the K Systems solutions and project team. In order to achieve the desired aesthetic finish, it was decided upon that mineral wool slabs would be adhesively fixed into these areas and this proved a success on completion of works.
KENSA CONTRACTING: RENEWABLE HEATING SYSTEMS IN TOWER BLOCK Best Tall Building Retrofit or Refurbished Project
Heat Pump (GSHP) ambient district heating in social housing. This project was carried out along with a number of external fabric improvements to 8 tall buildings in the London Borough of Enfield. Innovative shared ground loops where used to provide these tower blocks with much needed renewable heating. Whilst this was a MEP technology it was also initially scoped as an energy efficient retrofit and sustainability project.
