Olympic Torch at The Needles Park The chairlift at The Needles Park has been chosen by Olympics organisers as one of 20 iconic UK locations for the Olympic torch to be borne. The Needles Park General Manager Marino Zanti said ‘it is such a great honour to be chosen to host the torch for part of its journey across the UK. For the Needles Park be considered one of the UK’s top destinations by LOCOG is recognition of how iconic the chairlift and needles are, with intense media interest, we will undoubtedly be watched by the world as the torch makes its way down the chairlift’. Spectators can cheer on the torch as it passes through the Needles Park site on Saturday 14th July and enjoy a fun, sports themed day packed with competitions, prizes & giveaways. IW residents will be able to get free parking on the day on presentation of a voucher (please see advert page xx) and proof of Island residence (utility bill or photo ID with address on). Needles Park Marketing Manager Charlotte Denman-Johnson adds ‘although we will have an increased capacity for vehicles on the 14th July, we are expecting to reach, and possibly exceed capacity on the day. We would advise visitors wishing to see the torch to arrive as early as possible as we can not guarantee parking or even vehicular access past 12 noon. We would strongly advise public to arrive as early as possible to avoid disappointment’. See advert page 25.

Winners of the spring competition with Seaview Wildlife Encounter Becki (age 7) was so pleased to hear she was a winner of a family ticket to Seaview Wildlife Encounter that she couldn’t wait to use it. Becki, myself and her Grandparents visited during the last school holiday and spent a full day of fun in the then glorious sunshine. Becki enjoyed getting hands on, throwing fish for the penguins (twice) & spotting Dippy (who we’ve ‘liked’ on facebook, so receive regular updates on), feeding peanuts to parrots & special pellets to wallabies. Not to mention feeding the ducks, all keen to make friends and eat from your hand. Somewhat surprisingly, her favourite experience was meeting and touching some of the reptiles. Becki gives Seaview Wildlife Encounter a massive thumbs up. She bought a penguin in the gift shop (named ‘Velvet Dippy’ almost immediately) so she will always remember what was a very special day!

With thanks and kind regards,Sue Irons (Becki’s Mum) Winner Finley Cracknell. Finley was really proud to be taking his little brother Austin for a day out at the Seaview Wildlife Encounter, Austin is 2 and Finley is 7. A special part was being able to get really close to the penguins and feed them with really smelly fish! We watched them dive under the water and zoom around. Finley also held a cockroach and a centipede! Very brave! Both the boys enjoyed the ‘pets corner’ where they we able to feed the wallabies and spot the babies in the pouches! The parrots and meercats were also very entertaining. We took our own picnic lunch, but managed to stop for a delicious ice cream half way round! There was also a information area, with toys for younger children which Austin enjoyed playing in. All in all a great day out!

Independent Schools

Independent Schools Priory School Whippingham Priory School is settling into its new home at Whippingham, with its wealth of history as the school of Queen Victoria on the Osborne Estate. It moved in February 2012 from Shanklin, and is expanding rapidly with over 25% growth in pupil numbers this academic year.

ABC in Life Skills at Fiveways

With its maximum class size of 16, to ensure attention can be given to every child, re-building the larger classrooms at Whippingham to create a series of smaller, more intimate units, and adding a purpose-built music room, the beginnings of a library, two laboratory units for science teaching and a large, well-lit Art Room with its own dark room for photography, plus a Reception Class, Priory School is able to expand and enhance what it offers to island children. The playing fields have already hosted home games this term, and sports are rapidly being developed under recently appointed staff. A greatly expanded schedule of clubs including a homework club from 4.15-5pm offers a range of activities that have proved very popular. Four school buses now operate to bring children from all over the island. What has been so pleasing is that many parents have commented that the family atmosphere has transferred to the larger building, as shown by the joyous Jubilee Tea Party held in June 1st to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. (See ad inside front cover).

Any one for ironing? A big pile of crumpled shirts faced the children as they learnt how to prepare their own uniform during our Life Skills day. Shiny shoes are important too when you want to look your best, so how do you get a good shine? Well it is easy when you know how. A spot of polish followed by a lot of elbow grease does the trick! Laces are a puzzle to all of us at school today because we all have Velcro on our shoes, so we had a tricky old time trying to tie shoe laces. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is really useful to be able to get your own. Shall I have Pops, Cornflakes, Wheaties or Crunchies? What a choice! First fill the bowl and then just add milk and enjoy! We also learned to lay a table and peel a carrot. Cleaning up can be fun too, especially if you have a big yellow vacuum cleaner to help with the job. A spot of polish and a cloth in hand soon sees the classroom gleaming in no time at all. (See ad inside front cover). Learning is what we do well at Fiveways and our

“Let’s learn life skills day” was a lesson for us all.

Education Commited to supporting families and the local community We have 7 nurseries across the south east with 2 fantastic nurseries on the Island; in Shanklin and Newport. Both nurseries are firmly embedded within their local communities and are easily accessible on main commuting routes with plenty of space for parking and safely dropping children off. Our Shanklin nursery is in a beautiful seaside location at YMCA Winchester House and our Newport nursery is in the pretty grounds of St Marys on Parkhurst Road. Our qualified and experienced staff seek to be inspirational role models for children. We will assess your child’s individual interests and develop them through activities tailored to your child’s needs. Both nurseries have large outside spaces for children to explore and play safely outside and we take full advantage of our environment with regular walks and trips to local parks and the beach. Through these activities, children are able to learn about safety and they are encouraged to explore and talk about the environment. YMCA is committed to supporting families and the local community and offers a range of discounts for siblings and public sector workers. If you are looking for childcare, feel free to pop in and see us, you don’t need an appointment. Alternatively more information is available from our website at www.ymca-fg.org or by telephone 525423 (YMCA Nursery Newport, St Marys) or 861073 (YMCA Nursery Shanklin, Winchester House).

Try it, Test it and Review it Cowes Chiropractic Clinic

In the spring issue we had 6 Sweet DreameezZ to give away from Cuski baby Ltd. We asked Island parents to write a review. This is what some had to say........

As any parent will know, one of the inevitable happenings during the school summer holidays is the sorting out of school uniform and kit.... What has that got to do with chiropractic I hear you ask? Well, quite a lot would be my reply! There are two areas that I would like to address – bags and shoes. Children seem to be required to carry more and more to and from school. The combined weight of text books, PE kit, musical instrument, packed lunch, laptop etc can be considerable and a strain on a young and changing body. The best type of bag for anybody to use is a good quality back pack/ rucksack type, with wide straps and always worn over both shoulders. This spreads the loading on the spine in the best possible way and prevents twists and strains occurring.

Tried and tested by Theo Holme 5 and a half months As a busy mum of 3 time and space is precious, before I got my Sweet DreameezZ by Cuski I was sceptical and thought it was something I could live without. However after trying it I now realise it is something I couldn’t live without!

School shoes are equally important. The fashion for very flat ballet style pumps is not healthy for young feet - they give no arch support and the toes have to ‘claw’ to hold the shoe on. A more substantial dolly style with a single strap is a much better alternative. Boys should avoid wearing the very flat canvas pumps or trainers with the laces undone for the same reason. Unsupportive footwear can lead to foot and knee problems later in life.

The Sweet DreameezZ by Cuski is made from bamboo fibre and is very soft and breathable. I used it to help my twins sleep longer for their morning nap in the garden over their pram. I found it useful in the car to block out sunlight from going in their eyes. We had a meal out and I also used the Sweet DreameezZ to secure my son to the highchair as he is not 100% stable yet!

The 100% bamboo Rayon Black muslin easily drapes over the pushchair, car seat, cot and even a car window. Although we haven’t had many bright or sunny days recently, it provides a calm low light helping baby to drift off peacefully and the simple star design gives him something to look at.

All in all I would give this product a 10/10 and if there are any celebs out there who want to keep the prying eyes of the paparazzi off their new baby well look no further - the ideal product stars and all!

It all folds away neatly into its own little carry bag, and its many other uses (swaddle, modesty cover whilst nursing, snuggle, the list goes on), makes it a very practical accessory for any mum!

Visit www.cuski.com for more information about all the beautiful products for Mama and Baby.

By Sonia mother of twins.

Review by Laura Holme. .

The next ‘Try it, Test it and Review it’ is with Usborne Books. Usborne Books have some great books on Going to School and with September on it’s way, we would like parents to review the book ‘Starting School Sticker Book’. This book is a fun way to familiarise young children with all the things they will need to know and be able to do when they start school. Following a typical day at school, children will enjoy using the stickers to help the character in the book get dressed, pack bags, hang up coats change for PE and so on. With over 100 stickers, this is sure to keep little children occupied for hours.

Children do not generally invent backache or pain so if your child is complaining please bring them in for a free assessment, it can save years of problems in later life!

We love living near the sea & very close to the beach, we love nothing more than packing a picnic & heading down to Colwell to our beach hut, for a bbq & paddle boarding afternoon.

Favourite Local Park

On a sunny or stormy day we enjoy Headon Warren, for dog walks and blowing the cobwebs away.

Favourite Local Club / Class

The Harwood Family - Claire, Matt, Beaux and Millie the dog

Favourite Child - Friendly Restaurant

Why do you like living in Wootton?

Favourite Place on the Island

Favourite Local Park

Arrabella loves her gymnastics club which she attends on a Monday after school at Westbay Club, Yarmouth. Mummy & Daddy enjoy stand up paddle boarding with Pedal n Paddle. We love Olivos in Newport, the food is amazing & the staff are great Arrabella always feels comfortable there. Most weekends are spent down at Colwell beach, we have recently taken a beach hut, and this has to be our favourite spot on the whole Island.

Best Children’s Book

It’s a great place to live with little ones, as everywhere is easily accessible. It only takes 10 mins to get into Newport and 5 mins to get to our nearest beach. We have a great park opposite us, the Wootton Recreational ground. It’s been updated recently and there’s lots of fun stuff to play on, and we can walk Millie the dog there too.

Arrabella is really enjoying the Michael Morgurgo books at home & at school, they are full of adventure and excitement - perfect for our little 7yr old bookworm!

Favourite Local Club / Class

Favourite Beach

Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant

At the moment, because we live so close, our favourite beach has to be Colwell, its quiet, beautiful and wonderfully child friendly, most of the beach is sand, and at low tide the beach is vast.

Beaux and I have been going to Caterpillar Music class. She loves singing and dancing to all the songs and playing with the puppets. Our favourite place for lunch is the Dell cafe on the beach front at Puckpool as they do amazing food. For dinner, Pizza Express in Newport.

Favourite Place on the Island

We love taking Beaux to Seaview Wildlife Encounter. The animals are amazing, the cafe is good and the landscaped gardens and water features are lovely.

Best Children’s Book

The Snail and the Whale, it’s Beaux’s favourite and we’ve been reading it to her since she was tiny.

Favourite Beach.

Beaux likes to watch her Daddy surfing so we love going over to Compton beach for a picnic and play on the sand.
