Welcome Welcome ..... We’re in a holiday mood - and here’s hoping for some long, sunny days when we can all spend some quality time with our children. We have some great ideas on how to make the most of those family days out, see Top Things To Do This Summer on page 28. I remember that the six whole weeks off school can seem like an eternity, but if you’re a working parent you will find some great holiday clubs on page 21 and 27. So whether you’re a Mum, Dad, Granny, Grandpa, Childminder or Carer we are sure you will find this summer issue a help to keep you busy and in September you’ll be able to find a club or classes you may want to join in. The Family Directory is an essential guide for families on the Island, so please can we ask that each time you make a call - you let the advertisers know that you saw their advert in The Family Directory. Front Cover Stars for the summer issue are Harry and Charlotte. We had a lovely photo shoot in Bembridge with Mandy from Mandy Meadows Photography. We love all the photos you send in and we will now be looking for the Front Cover Star for the winter issue. If you get chosen, you will be invited to join us for a photo-shoot for the winter issue front cover. If you would like your child or children to be the front cover star(s) for the winter directory please do send your photos to polly@thefamilydirectory.co.uk with all your details by the 28th September, see page 38 for more information and see the shoot for this magazine. Resonate - Medina Community Choir Resonate In October 2006, Hannah Redman started the Medina High Community Choir at Medina High School, with the aim of encouraging students’ parents to join with their children in the wonderful art of singing. She also set up the Island Community Glee Club which was originally based at the Riverside Centre in Newport. It was absolutely free for all young people who wanted to come along. The standard was incredibly high and soon, influenced by the hit TV show, “Glee”, movement was added and soon they were ready to compete on a national level. In 2012 the group auditioned for BBC’s Sports Relief Does Glee Club under the name of “Soundwave” and got through to the televised heats but didn’t make it any further. They worked tirelessly in the hope of getting further in the competition this year and, under the name of “Resonate”, they stormed to victory in this year’s Comic Relief does Glee Club. Hannah says “It is crazy to think how a small group of friends from the IW who rehearse in a church hall can win a national competition against some of the top stage schools in the country. I am incredibly proud of Resonate and what we have achieved together. We have literally spent hundreds of hours together in rehearsals and they have shown that if you work hard enough and are passionate enough about what you do, you will eventually find success. It applies to anything in life really. The only place in life you find “success” before “work” is in the dictionary!”

In the spring issue we had 3 family Cream Teas to give away from Chessell Pottery. We asked the children to write a review which you can find online. This is what Luke had to say.

Since winning the BBC competition back in March, the group have been extremely busy rehearsing new material and performed at the Old Gaffers festival, charity events, The Big Top and at The Cabaret Club at the IW Festival and at The Bestival bandstand later this year. For more information about the Medina Community Choir, please go to: www.medinacommunitychoir.org.uk or check out their Facebook page: Medina Community Choir. Hello Polly My name is Luke and I am one of the competition winners of the cream tea at Chessell Pottery. I went with my Mum, Dad, Nann and Grandad. I had scrummy hot chocolate and we had plain scones and yummy fruit filled ones, as you can see on the picture of me eating one it was filled with homemade jam and cream it was delicious, after the tea we went into the pottery shop where I bought some rock and a wooden pop gun.

F.A.C.T. Fran’s Adolescent Cardiac Trust Fran’s Adolescent Cardiac Trust is a newly formed trust on the Isle of Wight specializing in cardiac risk and awareness for the young people and their families. There are 12-15 young people dying every week in the UK and that’s far too big a number, also 260 young people died while in school last year. That’s somebody’s child, somebody’s family member. A lot of kids and parents don’t even know they have anything wrong. Then when something happens it’s too late. But the Defibrillators buy time. The machines give the opportunity to get a medical service to them increasing the time for survival by 75%. We are trying to fundraise to have life saving equipment of defibrillators in schools on the Island. Then train staff and students how to use the defibrillators with the skills and knowledge to save a life. They have a half an hour lesson, and can then stay on and practice.” Winners Isobel and Seb will be in the next issue as they will start the course on the 14th July. To find out more go to page 36.

Thank you very much Luke Belcher. Fiona, Matt, Jeremy (5) and Jemima (2) Capewell We were delighted to win a family ticket to the Hovertravel open day on Sunday 24th March. The day started with a trip from Ryde to Southsea to join the event taking place at the Southsea terminal. There was a small display of hovercraft memorabilia to view and buy (Jeremy and Jemima loved their retro hovercraft toys,) before boarding the specially chartered hovercraft full of families and hovercraft enthusiasts. The special trip took us along Southsea Seafront, giving us good views of the nearby fort. Visibility wasn’t great but this didn’t matter for the next part, where the pilot demonstrated the agility of the craft by performing donuts, which the kids really enjoyed! Once back at Southsea we were able to climb up to the cockpit and ask the pilot questions about the craft and it’s controls. Jeremy enjoyed learning about all the different buttons he could see - even though only a handful are used. We had a great day and the children often ask about going on the Hovercraft again! Wight Yoga - Move & Stretch. Breathe & Relax.

At the Jane McGregor Swimming Academy we always try to make sure that safety and survival techniques are part of every single lesson. From as young as 6 months old we try to instil safety techniques that then become second nature. Here are my top 10 tips to instil into and practice with your little ones to help them stay safe this summer. 1. Teach your children the 4 points of the water safety code -

‘S’. SPOT. The dangers ‘A’. ADVICE. Take advice

l l l

‘F’. FRIEND. Always go with a friend

l ‘E’. EMERGENCY. Learn how to help in an emergency. 2. Make sure your child from a very early age knows the emergency telephone number. 3. Teach your child the beach safety flags (especially useful on The Isle Of Wight). 4. When going to the beach with young children it is often a good idea to go to a life guard patrolled area. 5. When playing on the beach do not dig large holes by the sea and never get inside deep holes, as they are dangerous if water runs inside or if the sides fall in. 6. Never take inflatables out in the wind and always keep them close to the shore. 7. Never allow your children to swim in an area where there are water sports taking place. 8. Never leave your child unattended in or near water even for a minute. A child can drown in the smallest amount of water. 9. Check out your neighbours gardens, do they have ponds, water buts or pools that your child could fall into? Is your garden secure? Always be aware that when you visit friends or other family members there may be water hazards in their gardens. 10. Most importantly...... TEACH YOUR CHILD TO SWIM. It is one of the most important things you can teach them and may well save their lives one day.

Learning to swim should be as high up on the list as learning to read and write infact when you live on The Isle Of Wight perhaps it should be even higher!!

Children LOVE Yoga! We have classes for everyone, from the age of 2 your child can come to a mat and enjoy the many benefits of yoga. Pre-school yoga is fun, noisy and often takes us to magical places. Between 5 & 12 children are practising yoga postures with some added creativity, learning breathing techniques and enjoying their relaxation. Teenage yoga is designed to unwind their tightening bodies and busy brains. Saturdays we have Family yoga, this is a really special class where careers, parents and grandparents can all do a yoga class together with their children. Adult classes + pre & post natal and children’s classes once a week in Nettlecombe. For more information and details see advert page 9.

Water Babies Babies on the Isle Of Wight are enjoying the benefits of swimming with a national award winning company Water babies, not only have they won the most recent ‘What’s on 4 Little Ones’ award for the best baby and Toddler development programme they have won it for the past 5 years in succession! In Newport, Medina Leisure Centre’s popular junior sports challenge for the over 8s runs throughout the summer holidays, with a huge range of sporting activities that includes swimming, trampolining, dodgeball, unihockey, badminton, indoor football, tennis, rounders and many many more. With so many different sports there really is something for everyone - this is a great opportunity for kids to have a go at lots of new activities in a safe, friendly and, most importantly, FUN environment. The list of things to do is so long that summer boredom simply isn’t an option.

Agave Nectar Sponge Puddings Recipe provided courtesy of Four Seasons Cookery Academy 2 oz Flora / Olive Margerine 2 oz Sugar 1 Egg 2 oz Self Raising Flour

l l l

Place the Flora and the Sugar in a bowl and mix quickly until soft and pale yellow in colour.

l

Whisk the Egg and add to the Flora and Sugar. Carefully add the Flour and fold into the mixture. Drizzle a little Agave Nectar into the bottom of 2 Ramekin dishes. Top with the cake mixture. Cook for approximately 10 - 12 minutes at 190 oC (Gas Mark 5) until golden brown and ‘spongy’ - double check by inserting a skewer into the mixture which should be clean when it comes out.

Lightly prick the top of the puddings and drizzle over a little more Agave Nectar. Leave for a little before turning

l

out. Serve with Custard; Crème Fraiche or Ice-Cream. Delicious!

This pudding is slightly healthier than usual because we have used Flora / Olive Margerine instead of Butter. Agave Nectar is the ‘new kid on the block’ - it is taken from the Prickly Pear Plant and is suitable for Vegetarians, and, in moderation, for people with diabetes. It has more nutritional value than Honey. It has a low G.I. which means that it will not only keep hunger pangs at bay; it will also prevent sugar surges and slumps.

Hover Nanny service makes journey to school easy

Ryde School ~ Fiveways & Junior School

Travelling across the water to school has been made a whole lot easier by the introduction of Portsmouth High School’s Hover Nanny Service. Until now the journey across the water has limited parental choice of schools, particularly at junior level, to what is available on the island. The new service aims to give parents complete peace of mind about their children crossing the water to school. The Hover Nanny collects pupils from the Ryde hover terminal in the mornings and accompanies them over to Southsea where a school minibus takes them on to school. After school the Hover Nanny takes pupils back across to Ryde. Girls are accompanied at all times and the service operates every day during term time. The service is supported by Hovertravel Ltd. Why not visit Portsmouth High School and find out more about the opportunities on offer for your daughter? The school is holding an Open Day on Saturday 5 October from 9.30 to 12.30 when you will be able to tour the school, listen to presentations and take part in lots of activities around the school. Visit www.portsmouthhigh.co.uk or telephone our Admissions Registrar, Mrs Caroline Hunter, on 023 9282 6714 for further information. See advert page 17.

From Fiveways, with its vibrant classrooms and outdoor areas through to the Junior school, we are able to provide a memorable and positive start to school in a happy and friendly environment. We are often asked by visitors, ‘What makes the Junior School special?’ It is taken as read that children do well academically and in sports, languages, music and the arts, but it is also an amazingly compassionate community. Principles sound so old-fashioned but here they still matter and we believe in kindness, respect and duty. We believe in a healthy mix of traditional and innovative educational approaches, arousing curiosity and ambition in our pupils. We have never stopped learning our tables and spellings, but we also continue to move our curriculum forward, introducing new trips, challenges, clubs and making ICT an integral tool for learning. We ensure our children do well and achieve their best. Why not arrange to come and see us or visit us on our next Open Day on 28 September, so we can show you what we have to offer. We now operate a bespoke bus service from many parts of the Island including the Hovercraft and many of parents find this of great assistance We ensure our children do well and achieve their best. Independent Schools

Independent Schools Keep their brain active over the summer holidays with Kumon

Priory School Priory School completes this summer, its first full academic year at its new site at Whippingham. We have been able to adapt this historic building to the needs of a school that educates children from 4 to 18, by housing all the Senior School and the 6th Form is the “old” building” and the Junior School with its fast-growing Reception Class in the “new” building which was built in 1996. This allows us for the first time to plan “moving-up” days where Year 6 in particular will have their first taste of their new classrooms in the Senior School next year. The school has grown rapidly with three years now starting to have “two form” entry. We still keep our maximum class size of 16, but demand for places has meant we now have years where we have two forms or classes in one year. Our central location near Newport with our 4 school buses able to transport children allows us to start to serve all Island children. It is an exciting time for the school with the building itself celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2014. See advert page 17.

A child’s summer holidays are often jam-packed with energetic activities including bike rides, swimming, dancing and football. But it is just as important to keep their mind active over the holidays as it is their bodies. Ensuring they continue educational activities throughout can mean they are confident, equipped and ready to tackle new work when they go back to school. Established for over 50 years, daily study of the Kumon Maths and English Programmes can make all the difference when it comes to keeping the brain active between school terms, as well as throughout the year. As a new term approaches, it’s especially important that your child gets to grips with these core subjects, as well as the vital learning skills which can take students beyond their school level. At Kumon, learning is always for the long run: the individualised programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, ensuring they maximise their ability and begin to realise their unlimited potential. The summer holidays provide an ideal opportunity for your child to settle into their new routine of daily Kumon study, before getting off to a flying start in the new school year. Education The Children’s House Montessori

Need a holiday crèche? Look no further

The Children’s House Montessori is nestled in a quiet area of Bembridge surrounded by a large garden in which children grow, cultivate and cook their own crops. Jacqui and her dedicated team of Montessori teachers promote a gentle and calm environment of order and respect. The Montessori approach acknowledges that children learn naturally at their own pace in a suitably supportive environment with resources to support and extend their learning. Our curriculum areas of mathematics, literacy and language, sensorial, cultural and practical life introduce the joy of learning whilst strengthening children’s positive attitudes towards themselves and others. We encourage ethical behaviour which respects diversity and the attainment of self discipline. Each unique child is valued as part of a large family group from our babies to school entrants, learning to care for and help each other. Structured lessons are balanced with free play with an emphasis on being outdoors; children care for their own environment, cook, enjoy music and song, and share social activities with others throughout a Montessori day. See advert opposite.

Tops Day Nursery, based at the Isle of Wight College in Newport, is opening its doors to little ones across the island this summer, offering a new crèche facility. Children can be booked into Tops Day Nursery for half days, full days or full weeks for fun, nurturing childcare this summer holiday. The nursery can cater for babies from 3 months to 5 years old. There are also limited places at their Mini Beasts club, a holiday club for 5 - 11 year olds. If you need a break this summer, why not book your little one in for some sessions with trusted, experienced and trained staff at Tops Nursery - you deserve a holiday too! see advert page 21. New Primary School proposed for the Isle of Wight Register your interest NOW A parent-led community group is proposing to open a new primary free school on the Island in September 2015. The Sylvan School will offer Island parents a real choice in their child’s education, offering a different style of learning where 50% of school time will be spent outside the classroom, and adult to child ratios will be kept low to make sure children get all the attention they need. Children at key stage 1 will follow a child-initiated curriculum; at key stage 2, the emphasis will shift to a project-based curriculum, whereby children’s learning will address real local and global issues, rather then being broken down into separate academic subjects. The Sylvan School proposers are confident that this style of education will improve outcomes for all children, particularly those who might struggle in a more conventional classroom environment. Parents are encouraged to visit www.thesylvanschool.org.uk where they can find a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section and register their interest for any child who will be aged 4 - 11 between 2015 and 2017. They and other community members can also contact the team directly via the Facebook page www.facebook.com/thesylvanschool or by email: info@thesylvanschool.org.uk with any questions, comments, or offers of practical support!

Education The Island Day Nursery opening in Totland

Chatterbox Childcare “The Best Start in Life”

The Governing Body of Weston Academy, Totland have appointed The Island Day Nursery Group, to open a nursery and Pre-school on the school premises.

Chatterbox is committed to raising the standards of childcare on the Island by providing well equipped facilities where only qualified staff work with the children. The government agree the better qualified the staff the better outcomes for the children. Nurture is equally important which is why Chatterbox works hard to make the environment and atmosphere a happy, safe and welcoming experience.

The new nursery and Pre-school will open in September 2013 and will operate out of custom made nursery and pre-school premises within the school grounds. A secure, dedicated outdoor area and garden will also be available for the nursery and Pre-school children. With its own entrance and reception area, parents will be able to select the hours they need for childcare and will not be restricted to school hours. The childcare facilities will open 51 weeks of the year, so working parents will not be restricted to term time only. In addition, facilities will be available for primary school children for holiday club during school holidays and breakfast and after school clubs during term time. These out of school clubs, currently known as Stingrays, will be operated and run by the existing school staff who will transfer to The Island Day Nursery. Head Teacher of Weston Academy, Angela Collins commented “We are delighted to be able to offer childcare facilities, from September, to children under school age. We welcome the opportunity to work alongside the nursery and Pre-school, by incorporating the younger children in to as many of our activities as we can. We know that working together with the early years age group makes the transition in to the academy, at 4 years of age, so much better if the children know the school and staff.” Roseleen Cullen, director of The Island Day Nursery said “We will be able to offer all three and four year old children their free entitlement to a Pre-school place from September. This allows parents to access 15 hours of Pre-school per week, term time only. However, we will also offer a stretched entitlement where parents can spread the 570 funded hours per year over a 51 week period, this option suits many working parents.

From September 2013 Chatterbox will be adding a third site at Dover Park in Ryde, this will be in addition to the two current sites, Chatterbox Nelson Street Ryde which has its own dedicated baby department and Chatterbox Nettlestone located in the primary school, which has all the benefits of good school links. Chatterbox Dover Park will offer childcare for children aged between 2 and 11 years, opening all year round with an onsite breakfast, after school and holiday club at prices that parents can afford to pay. 2 Year Old Funding Available at all Chatterbox sites, eligible 2 year olds will be entitled to 15 hours free childcare.

Call

01983 616779

From September, we will also be able to offer 15 hours of childcare to two year old children, of working and non working parents, who meet the eligibility criteria set out by the government. We will be happy to provide more information on the funded places and the other facilities we have to offer to any interested parent or carer. We are looking forward to a building a good working relationship with the staff, families and children attending Weston Academy.” Families wanting more information on the new nursery and Pre-school can call 01983 533334 or leave their details at the academy See our advert on the inside cover for all our contact details.

Meet ‘Ratchett’ the locomotive repairman and his niece Penny who likes nothing more than getting grubby in the workshop! You’ll be seeing a lot of them over the course of these three days! But the chances of running trains on time don’t look good, as Mrs Cumberpatch the Booking Clerk knits and talks and talks and knits when she should be selling tickets - while Burt the Engine Driver seems more interested in cooking his lunch. And why is Tamp the Trackman always digging holes?

Do you have what it takes to foster a child? Can you make a difference to a child’s life?

The Island has many children and young people in foster care, but needs new carers, in particular for teenagers, sibling groups, parent and child placements and to provide short breaks for disabled children (Family Link). Carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds. The fostering and adoption team can offer good advice and dispel any concerns.

Family Link scheme The Family Link Scheme also needs support from new carers. The scheme places disabled children with ‘link families’ for a short break of a few hours or a couple of nights every month.

If you would like to find out more about becoming a foster carer, or Family Link, call (01983) 823160, or visit www.iwight.com/fostering

Fostering: Can you do it? The Isle of Wight has a brilliant environment for children to grow up and flourish in.

Unfortunately, every year children are taken into care because their parents, for one reason or another, are unable to look after them. It may be that their parents are going through a difficult period, or that the child is subject to abuse or neglect. The problem is often unrelated to the child, and whatever it may be, the child needs looking after while the issues are resolved. The children can be hurt, frightened and sometimes angry, and deserve the support, shelter and comfort of a real home. Fostering is caring for such children in your own home. It is not adoption, but it can mean looking after a child for a week, a month, a year or sometimes even longer, helping them to thrive in a caring and safe environment. By providing a secure and loving home, you will help a child develop their self-esteem and learn that they are valued. While fostering can be very rewarding you will at times face difficulties. We offer a strong support team and do everything possible to help our carers. You will be working with a professional, experienced team of people, providing you with quality support and guidance. As a an Isle of Wight foster carer, you will foster children from the Isle of Wight, enabling them to remain within their own community and maintain the positive contacts such as school and friends within their life. You will be provided with the opportunity to promote change and direction in a child’s life. To find out more and see how you can make a difference call (01983) 823160 or visit
