Selection Sunday is this Sunday, December 8, and the matchup for the 48th Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on Saturday, December 28 at 8:15 p.m. CST will be set.
BREAKDOWN OF AVAILABLE TEAMS FROM PRIMARY CONFERENCES
The tie-in with The American replaces the 2024 stand-alone tie-in with Army West Point, as the Black Knights joined The American beginning this year. The American features 14 football members – UAB, Army West Point, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, Rice, South Florida, Temple, UTSA, Tulane and Tulsa.
Bowl-Eligible American Teams: Army West Point, East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, South Florida, UTSA and Tulane
The American will match up against a current Pac-12 team – Oregon State and Washington State – or a former Pac-12 team – Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah and Washington.
Bowl-Eligible Current or Former Pac-12 Teams: Arizona State, California, Colorado, Oregon, USC, Washington and Washington State
WHAT IF ENOUGH TEAMS DO NOT QUALIFY FROM PRIMARY CONFERENCES?
The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl also holds backup tie-ins with Conference USA and the Sun Belt Conference. The open slot on either side would be filled depending on the number of bowl eligible teams from those conferences.
CONFERENCE HISTORY IN THE INDEPENDENCE BOWL
The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl has featured The American three times, with a record of 1-2. The last American team to play in the Independence Bowl was Houston – now a member of the Big 12 Conference – in 2022. They defeated Louisiana, 23-16. Current members of The American have appeared in the Independence Bowl a combined eight times. The last current American team to play in the bowl was UAB in 2021, as they defeated No. 13 BYU 31-28.
The Pac-12 has been represented five times in the Independence Bowl – most recently by Cal in 2023. The conference has a record of 3-2 in the Independence Bowl. Oregon has the most appearances with two – 1989 and 1992. The current or former Pac-12 teams eligible for the Independence Bowl this year have totaled six appearances in the bowl game, as Colorado played in the 2007 Independence Bowl as a member of the Big 12.
The American and Pac-12 have never faced each other in Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl history.
CUSA has appeared in three Independence Bowls – sporting a 2-1 record in those games. The Sun Belt has two Independence Bowl appearances – with an 0-2 record.
