On 21 December, member David Kaio reported that the Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay AM frequencies carrying Today FM had been removed from their website.
From my monitoring at home and on the Rotorua KiwiSDR, it appears that the Hawkes Bay outlet on 1368 may have closed but 1107 (Tauranga and Rotorua sites) is still on air. (Bryan Clark)

SLOVAKIA
On 31 December 2022, Radio and Television of Slovakia will end the operation of medium-wave radio transmitters: Košice 702 and Nitra 1098. Both transmitters were used to broadcast the national broadcast of Radio Patria between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the evening. In the night hours, it was supplemented by the broadcasting of the RTVS Rádio Devín program service.
MW broadcasting in the country started in 1926. You can find more about the history of radio broadcasting in Slovakia on our website. www.rtvs.sk/historia/casova-os
MW broadcasting was gradually replaced by FM broadcasting in the VHF band and listeners on medium waves gradually decreased. Today, Slovak Radio is expanding its coverage in the T-DAB+ digital broadcasting standard in band III. (Rozhlas a televízia Slovenska website via Jakub Fabo 15/12 via mediumwave.info)

FCC Upholds $20,000 Fine, KSCO Plans to Cease Local Programming
The FCC on 15 December upheld its proposed $20,000 forfeiture against Zwerling Broadcasting System, Ltd’s Conservative Talk 1080 AM KSCO in Santa Cruz California for operating against its licensed parameters. The FCC received complaints in 2016 and 2020 alleging the station had been operating at night with 1kW non-directional for over thirty years as opposed to its licensed directional 5kW. Zwerling had last applied for an STA to operate under those parameters in 1996. In response to the FCC, Zwerling told the FCC that “in the directional mode the station loses coverage to a significant amount of its primary service area.”
The station did apply for the STA again in early September with the FCC rejecting it as the was no proper justification for the need to operate with an alternate antenna system and reduced power during night-time hours and no engineering studies supplied to show that they facility would protect other co-channel and first adjacent stations.
The fine comes as owner Michael Zwerling has placed the station up for sale on Craigslist. Zwerling is seeking $1.5 million for KSCO, its three translators 104.1 K281CA Santa Cruz, 95.7 K239CN Watsonville, and 107.9 K300DD Watsonville, and 1340 KOMY La Selva Beach/Santa Cruz.
He is seeking an additional $6 million for the 6.8 acres of property hosting the station’s offices and three towers, otherwise the buyers would pay $15,000 per month in rent.
Zwerling told Lookout Santa Cruz that if a buyer cannot be found by the end of the year, KSCO will eliminate all of its local programming, “Yeah, it looks like our local programming is going away.
I have the radio station for sale, and the real estate separately. I think the ideal buyer would buy them both. But I guess that’s just not in the cards.”
In explaining why he is selling, “Now, I have a different life, and I want to enjoy it. For so many years, KSCO was 90% joy and 10% misery and sadness. In the last two years, that’s reversed. It’s like 90% misery and no fun at all.
It breaks my heart to have to send out these letters to people who have essentially been my family. But I’m just tired of spending all this money.
So many stations in the country now just don’t do live and local because it doesn’t pay, and it hasn’t paid for years.” (Lance Venta, RadioInsight.com via Ray Crawford)

TVNZ Nostalgia
One shaggy dog, dozens of humans, and a smorgasbord of Kiwi scenery: viewers were glued to the screen for this TV One promotional campaign, which began screening in August 1991.
The six-part promo followed a lovable sydney silky poodle cross travelling the country by car, train and paw. En route, roughly 50 Kiwis make blink and you'll miss it appearances: including sporting figures, local townspeople, and 20+ TV personalities (see backgrounder for more info, and clues on who is who).
The popular promos were directed by Lee Tamahori, before he made Once Were Warriors.

Thanks guys for your contributions, it’s nice to see that DX has finally shown a sign of arriving.
That’s it for another month, may 2023 be a good year for you, stay safe and take care.
How many of you remember this series of station idents for TV1 from 1990?

Now that the Christmas decorations are back in storage and the resolutions have been made and broken, let’s get on with business as usual. Remember to show loggings as tentative (tent) if you don’t get a clear ID, or if there’s doubt about the logging, and provide as much detail as you can, including date and language, while keeping your notes concise.
NZ-based remote SDR’s used for your loggings are indicated by this symbol beside the frequency:
2 = Mangawhai, Northland SDR2 (NE direction)
3 = Hinahina, Catlins SDR3 (Easterly direction)
If there’s no symbol, you were using your own radio or SDR equipment, and your own aerial. Also: “a” by the frequency indicates the station was slightly off its allocated frequency.
“v” by the frequency indicates varying frequency during the broadcast “h” by the frequency indicates reception of a harmonic of the true frequency in use.
“U” by the frequency indicates reception using USB mode is recommended
Many common languages are abbreviated –AA=Arabic, CC=Chinese, EE=English, FF=French, GG=German, JJ=Japanese, PP=Portuguese, RR=Russian, SS=Spanish. Others are usually spelled out in full.

Radio Onda, Via a EMail for reception in NZ.” Got a few reports from Japan, where they manage to hear our radio briefly, I think that is some kind of atmospheric window that reflects the signal and make it bounce around on the distance,we will send you a paper QSL card by post if you provide the postal address, By the way, our radio is off now due to a change of transmission site, will be back on air next year around Feb or March, also with a new frequency, 9530 kHz, that is more likely that you could catch again the signal sometimes...Regards, Julio”. email hello@radiodx.com subject “SDR News”
Let’s begin by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and I hope you all had a very good Christmas as well.
One of the interesting logs this month has been the reception of the HAARP test on 9600 kHz by bouncing a signal off an asteroid. This test was reasonably well heard on the Smøla SDR in Norway (see bandwatch below). Reception was also made from RTL 243, Beidweiler, Luxembourg on its last day of broadcast as well as Radio Devín in Slovakia on 1098 and 702 kHz which both closed on 31 st December 2022.
The mailbox is empty this month though I guess this is to be expected with the festive season upon us and everyone is getting busy with Christmas and holidays so maybe not so much time being spent listening to the radio. Your Ed (Pukerua Bay) has only 1 QSL in from BBC Ascension Island 6195

SW news from NZRDXL member Jerry Berg, 38 Eastern Avenue, Lexington, MA 02421, USA. Drake R8 & Eton E1-XM receivers. www.ontheshortwaves.com Update, December 11, 2022
We have already posted one QSL, from 1936 https://ecbiz329.inmotionhosting.com/~onthes6/QSL/TI4NRH.jpg, for the famous Costa Rican shortwave station, TI4NRH. Now, in “DX History-I/QSLS & Other Station Memorabilia," we have posted a file with four more. Look for the file at the red “New” in “Stations/Costa Rica” (zoom in to get the details). The first QSL is from February 1930, which is less than two years after the station’s May 1928 inauguration. This was quite early in the history of shortwave broadcasting. The QSL, 10-1/2” x 14” in the original, commemorates the acquisition of some new equipment, and the approval of free franking privileges for the station. Note the reference to the station as “the Lindy of Central America,” a reference to Lindbergh’s famous non-stop flight to Paris, which took place in 1927. The second QSL is from 1934 and is a hamstyle card, repurposed as a broadcast QSL. The third QSL, from 1938, is 9”x12” in size. The pride of the station’s owner-operator, Amando Cespedes Marin, and the place that he felt TI4NRH occupied in shortwave history, really come through. The final QSL, another certificate, was issued in May 1938 to commemorate the station’s tenth anniversary.
radiodx.com hello@radiodx.com
This particular QSL was used to verify a report on a special program arranged in 1941 by the NNRC Courtesy Programs Committee, and the paragraph above the QSL is from the November 10, 1941 NNRC bulletin, where the special program was announced. (“Bob” is Bob Gorsuch, the committee member who arranged programs with Latin American stations.) The fancy NRH QSLs were no doubt a product of Don Amando’s pre-radio background as a photographer.
www.ontheshortwaves.com Update, December 18, 2022
Under "DX History-II/Lists, Logs, Guides & Columns," you will find another example of an early radio log with “dual parentage.” Look for the red “New,” where we have posted the “Practical Wireless Radio Atlas and Wavelength Guide,” and “Answers—World Radio Atlas, Gazetteer and Log Book.” Judging from the note on the inside front cover of each, these must have been printed in 1933. The two publications, from the U.K., appear to be identical. At the beginning there is a combined list of short, medium and long wave stations in Europe, arranged by city (“The Concerts of Europe); at the end there is a similar list of non-European stations (“The Broadcasts of the World”); and in between are maps of the continents, with red dots at the station locations (the lists contain reference points so a specific “station dot” can be found on the maps). -- And under "Specialized Resources/Wavescan," we have updated the Wavescan Index so it is complete through edition #706 (September 4, 2022), which is the latest Wavescan script received. Audio versions of later weekly editions can be found at the usual places online (see URLs at the top of the Wavescan Index).
