INITIAL SKETCHES
I began with 20 sketches for each word to start getting my ideas flowing and to see what direction I wanted to take. After sketching it was pretty obvious which compositions were successful and which ones were not. I originally liked the letters shaped as balloons but moved towards a more simplistic composition in the end.
Again, for the word popcorn, I played around with some complex sketches but ended up going in a more simplistic direction.
REFINED SKETCHES
After the first critique I went back to the drawing board. I developed my ideas further and in most cases simplified my ideas. I found that letting the letter forms speak for themselves was the most effective in getting the meaning of the word across, which translated into my final forms.

I struggled most with the word shoplift. I liked the idea of a bar code because I thought it conveyed the message but was outside of the box. In critiques it was suggested that the motive of “stealing” wasn’t strong enough so I developed that idea further int he second round of sketches.
