hat a fantastic summer we have had with temperatures often in the 30’s and consistently in the mid to high 20’s. The garden has grown out of control after days of hot weather followed by the odd rainfall. It’s been very busy in the Wairarapa since early summer and there are still plenty of events taking place over the Autumn season. The Sunny Boy ballon, a favourite in 2004, is returning to our skies when Balloons over Wairarapa takes off in March. The annual Wairarapa Harvest Festival, an annual favourite, held on the banks of the Ruamahunga River, provides an opportunity for town and country to come together and sample local food and wine. This issue we feature a 24 page section, Wairarapa Weddings, showcasing the region as the ideal place to be married . It’s a ‘must read’ for those planning a wedding, and the vast array of venues and professionsals are guaranteed to make the day very special. Again we feature enterprising people involved in various professions and the arts, who call Wairarapa home and make it such a unique place to live. Sincere thanks to all the advertisers and contributors who continue to support the magazine - without them it would not be possible to publish this and future issues. I hope you enjoy this issue and will see you in Winter. Cheers Raewyn. Editor.

Trust House Balloons Over Wairarapa Thursday 17 March – Sunday 20 March

T
he heat is on for this year’s amazing ascension of some 20 hot air balloons, from all over the world, into the Wairarapa skies. Event organisers, who have extended the festival from three to four days – due to popular demand from pilots, sponsors and spectators – are busy putting the finishing touches to the 13th Balloons Over Wairarapa festival. And what a treat it’s going to be. The return of Sunny Boy, the 43 metre high, bright yellow, sun shape from Ohio, USA, will be one of the main attractions. Piloted by Carol Weiner, who last flew the balloon here in 2004, this crowd favourite is making an exclusive appearance at the event. Another highlight is the Trust House Night Glow, which promises a magical evening for all the family with a choreographed musical display of tethered balloons lighting up the night sky. The fiery Burner Parade through Carterton’s town centre is another spectacle that few will want to miss. Here balloon pilots will parade through the main street firing up their balloon baskets and burners. The festival kicks off early on Day One with a mass rise into the air from Masterton’s Colombo Road Rugby Grounds, allowing the balloons to float over the town for all to see before heading out to the countryside. Day Two is Carterton’s turn to gaze upwards before work and school with an early morning lift off from several locations close to the town. Day Three sees the impossible to imagine Splash’n’Dash at Henley Lake, where the balloons launch upwind of the lake and attempt to splash their baskets into the water to score points. Day Four concludes with another early flight over Masterton as pilots find the best wind conditions to fly to the Hood Aerodrome. For more details about the full, fun-filled, four day programme - as well as event confirmation, changes or (dare we say it) cancellations. go to www.nzballoons.co.nz

mporos in Greytown is pleased to offer the work of Tony Sly, one of New Zealand’s most respected studio potters. Shortly after they met with Tony in March 2010, at his studio in the idyllic setting of Raglan wharf, it was burned down and everything was destroyed. Thankfully no lives were lost and the pottery is up and running again. Emporos received the much anticipated order in January 2011 and it has been well worth the wait. Tony Sly has spent over 20 years mastering his art and from his Raglan-based studio creates distinctively styled domestic wares reminiscent of French provincial ceramics. Platters, jugs and bowls are richly glazed and the shapes are rustic and modest, tactile and aesthetically pleasing. All the pieces are handmade in small batch runs and each one is unique. A particular quality of Tony’s work is that his wares are timeless. They look amazing whether your home is traditional or contemporary and there are colours to appeal to all preferences from cool white and vanilla to rich aqua, ochre and green. Functionality is important too and while each piece has decorative appeal they are really lovely to use every day. Wares from the ‘Classic’ range are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. Tony Sly pottery is available in only a few selected stores in New Zealand, and Emporos is very proud to be selected as a stockist.

ponsorship from Palliser Estate Wines is supporting the Department of Conservation to restore Wairarapa’s Onoke Spit, home to threatened plants and animals. A 3 km bar lying at the foot of Lake Onoke, where the Ruamahanga River enters the ocean at the head of Palliser Bay, Onoke Spit forms an uncommon coastal ecosystem of exposed sand and gravel beach. It hosts the black-fronted and caspian tern, sand tussock, pingao/golden sedge, Notoreas “Wellington” moth, and sand daphne. The spit mouth was opened in 1892 for flood control which allowed more land to be farmed and ultimately vineyards being developed. “Our commitment is to environmental sustainability and sponsoring this project is part of that,” says Pip Goodwin of Palliser Estate. The spit is located between the Pencarrow heads to the south and Palliser Bay to the North – the two labels of Palliser Estate. “Despite a relatively sparse community in the locality, a community care group - Friends of Onoke Spit - and local businesses have drawn recognition to the spit’s special nature and are passionate about protecting, enhancing and enjoying it,” says Bruce Vander Lee, DOC programme manager, biodiversity. The ongoing Palliser’s annual sponsorship will help with vegetation restoration, pest control and signage. DOC is committed to supporting and including all groups as an integral part of the restoration process.

airarapa’s Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park has joined a prestigious group of top tourism operators after being awarded a Qualmark Enviro-Gold award. Copthorne Solway Park, which is located in Masterton, was awarded the gold honours after achieving top standards across the five key action areas of energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, community activities and conservation initiatives. It comes just weeks after being awarded a Four Star Plus accreditation by Qualmark - New Zealand Tourism’s official quality assurance system. Jerry Crump, General Manager of the Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park, says he is proud to achieve the gold award, which reflects his team’s philosophy of having a sustainable business and being a responsible tourism operator.

iners at the second annual Breadcraft Long Lunch, held on 3 April 2011 from 12.30 until 5pm, will be supporting local wildlife sanctuary Pukaha Mount Bruce while listening to local songbird, Tess O’Hara. Held under the big marquee at Copthorne Resort Solway Park, High Street, Masterton, Tess will be joined by the charming crooner Frankie Stevens. Lunch will feature five courses, developed by star chef Paul Condron, with local wines to accompany. A charity auction of irresistible items rounds off the day. Funds raised will go toward the ongoing forest restoration and pest eradication programmes that help keep our native birds safe. The elegant event sold out its inaugural year last year. Tables of 10 are $1200.00. Individual tickets are $125. Book your table now by phoning John Gilberthorpe on 06 304 9698.
“We’re thrilled to receive the Enviro-Gold and Four Star Plus accreditation in recognition of the extensive refurbishment that we began to implement two years ago and for the many ‘green’ processes and practices we’ve put in place,” says Mr Crump. “Qualmark has always been the sign of quality in New Zealand tourism, so now we’ve been recognised, it will help both international and domestic tourists make informed decisions about where they choose to visit.” Mr Crump says the business took several steps in order to achieve the Enviro Gold award. For instance a Green Team was established to help drive major projects including one recycling initiative which saw team members personally take recycling to the recycling centre and sort it. “This way we know absolutely that our waste is recycled responsibly,” says Green Team member and Business Development executive Caroline de Lautour. Staff from Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park also worked closely with the Sustainable Tourism Advisor in Regions (STAR) Programme advisor John Gilberthorpe, who provided mentoring assistance to help them develop sustainability initiatives within their business. The STAR programme is a Ministry of Tourism funded initiative to provide tourism operators with guidance and the tools to enhance their environmental performance. Destination Wairarapa obtained the contract to deliver this programme within the region in 2008. Qualmark is jointly owned by Tourism New Zealand and the New Zealand Automobile Association. The programme is run as an industry service, on a not-for-profit basis, and is the way the industry directs travellers to quality assured products and services.
uilt in the 1880's on a site given by Donald Sinclair with funds collected locally, the significant contributors to Burnside Church were J. Purvis Russell and Angus McMaster. Sinclair's daughter Ann, who never married, inherited the adjacent Burnside Farm and looked after the church until her Travelling on the Martinborough to Lake Ferry Road, death in 1958 aged 96. you’ll see Burnside Church (NZHPT Registered Category II). A stipulation at the time of the church's construction was that collections should never be taken up during a service, a tradition that was upheld until 1980. The building is a simple Gothic country church design with entry porch, side porch and thin spire. The end gable has a double Gothic window while the side walls have single windows. The church may be the work of Thomas Turnbull as the window details are similar to those at St. Marks in Carterton. Built by James Tweedale, it stands much as it always has with only the former shingle roof now covered in corrugated iron. A plaque was unveiled in 1990 by Governor General Sir Paul Reeves to mark 155 years since its dedication in 1875 by the Reverend J. McKee. Wairarapa Buildings by David Kernohan.
Wairarapa Award Winners

isa Carruthers talks to the first winners of the WairarapaWon Awards and finds out what this new initiative means for the Wairarapa. Give service with a smile. Go the extra mile. These are the messages of the Wairarapa Development Group’s new monthly award scheme that recognises and rewards excellence in customer service. And ‘go the extra’ is exactly what Yvonne Wood, Manager of Masterton’s Liquor King, did. When a customer from Auckland rang the store to order a case of wine for his brother in Masterton, Yvonne was happy to help. She recommended a selection of Wairarapa wines and arranged a wholesale price. Then, when the customer asked if she could deliver, she put the case in her car and took it to the address on her way home from work. Liquor King doesn’t normally deliver goods but Yvonne likes to be helpful and it wasn’t far out of her way. The house number had changed but it didn’t take her long to find the right one. The customer was so impressed with Yvonne’s exceptional customer service
that he nominated her for a WairarapaWon Award. And she won. Yvonne was rapt. “I was just really happy to win this award. I’m still stoked by it all. The recognition is great. “ The second winners of the newly introduced awards – Masterton-based Taylors Dry Cleaners – were equally thrilled. Celia and Maria Millar and the team were nominated after a customer experienced their top quality service when she left a very expensive item of clothing in their care. “It’s always nice to get positive customer feedback,” says Celia, “and this award just says it all. We’re delighted.” News of the awards is spreading like wildfire with over 50 nominations, for people and businesses across a wide range of industries, since the initiative was launched in November last year. Wairarapa Development Group spokeswoman Wendy Morrison, says the idea has really caught on and hopes that it will inspire companies and individuals to raise the bar of their own customer service levels. “WairarapaWon aims to celebrate great service providers and acknowledge them for a job well done. We hope it will

help lift the awareness of service levels offered to locals and visitors to the region, as well as provide a platform from which local businesses can grow and focus on improvement,” she says. “Exceptional customers service means greater returns, higher profit margins and hopefully increased GDP across all industry types.” WairarapaWon is supported by the Wairarapa Development Group – a team of local business men and women dedicated to bringing a new era of prosperity to the region – together with the Wairarapa Times Age, Wairarapa Chamber of Commerce, Scoop Enterprises, Destination Wairarapa, Air NZ Travel Brokers, Media Works, Tui Breweries and Westpac. To nominate someone you think has provided exceptional service go to www.wairarapawon.co.nz or pick up a nomination form from Wairarapa Times Age office or the Masterton and Martinborough i-SITES.

he quest for world-class wines, especially the delicate Pinot Noir, can be said to be a journey rather than a destination. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Martinborough Vineyard. From humble beginnings in 1980 to the highly regarded vineyard of today, it has been a long and spectacular path spanning over 30 years. the vineyard has steadily accumulated an impressive list of wine awards across all of their varieties both in New Zealand and overseas. What’s new to view at Aratoi Don’t count on your conventional gallery experience when you walk into Aratoi over the next few months. First off, you may be confronted by a glittering Hot Rod, as part of Art of the Hot Rod - an exhibition of sketches, prints, oils and airbrushing featuring some of the top names in American ‘garage art’, and some Kiwi practitioners as well. This will get car lovers’ engines revving! WAIRARAPA MOANA: he pataka kai, he pataka korero stories about a lake and its people is a show that’s got people talking in the region, and beyond. Suitable for the whole family, this exhibition includes a stunning 14m waka that once plied the Lake’s waters; history; ecology, and all you ever needed to know about the eels (‘tuna’ in Maori) that live in Lake Wairarapa. There are free public events happening right through to May. Go to the Aratoi website for more information. Peter Quest is showing new work in March. A merit award winner in the Wairarapa Review VI in 2009, Peter is a tutor at the creative space King Street Artworks, in Masterton, and this will be the first solo show of his highly individual work, at Aratoi. Carol Banner’s pastel and pencil award-winning artworks are stunning in their intricacy and she describes them as ‘natural fantasies’. Inspired by nature, she also finds beauty in dead and decaying forms, often overlooked by others. You’d usually have to travel the length of Wairarapa to see all 13 MainARTery Trail artists, but they are showing together here until April. The group includes painters, printmakers, a jeweller, furniture and stained glass artisans.
And three contemporary artists create a multimedia ‘gallery within a gallery’ in April. The Seek artists are James Ormsby, Dion Hitchens and Bill Riley. Represented by Gisborne’s Paulnache Gallery, they have devised this immersive experience especially for Aratoi.

I Love Lucy A blog by Jared Gulian - www.moonovermartinborough.co.nz
“You want a what?” I said. Rick smiled. “A pet pig. A kunekune.” I paused, then laughed. “For a second I thought you were serious.” Rick looked at me blankly. “I am serious,” he said. Suddenly his voice changed pitch, like he was talking to a baby. “They’re just so darn cute.” I knew I was in trouble then.
M
aori originally farmed the pigs because kunekunes graze on grass and produce a lot of meat and fat from very little food. The word ‘kunekune’ means ‘fat and round’ in Maori. As pigs go, kunekunes are generally good-natured, like human contact, and aren’t prone to wandering. As a result, some mad pig lovers say kunekunes make good pets.I immediately sat Rick down. Anyone could see we needed some kind of intervention. “Rick, you’re a city boy,” I said. “Remember? Think about Chicago. Think about Tokyo. Think about the packed trains and the noisy streets. You loved that. So did I. It’s embarrassing enough that we’ve actually become fond of our chickens, but now here you are actually wanting a pet pig? What is happening to us?! This has got to stop.” Rick just stared at the ground and shrugged. I sighed. “Clearly we’re both in need of a good dose of Chicago bus exhaust. All of these clean-living, rural Kiwis around us are a very, very bad influence.” In fact, at the time our friends Leelee and The Wolf had a pet kunekune sow named Squiggles and another neighbor has a boy pig named Sammy. When we first met young Squiggles and Sammy, Rick fell in love with them instantly. Sadly, Squiggles died after only a year of life due to a congenital respiratory problem. After that terrible tragedy, I thought maybe Rick would forget all about pet pigs. Instead of abandoning his porcine delusions, however, after the death of poor Squiggles Rick slowly transformed into a man obsessed. He started telling everyone he wanted a pet kunekune – friends, neighbors, even strangers in cafés. But the worst thing was when I caught him secretly eyeing unsavory, seedy websites such as Pig Breeders and the New Zealand Kunekune Association. At night he’d say romantic things like, “I want a cute, little kunekune pig – don’t you?.” Over and over I tried to talk some sense into him. “Those nasty beasts are by no means cute and little when they grow up,” I’d say. “They are big, fat, and ugly. And they’ll eat you alive if you trip in front of them.” “That’s not true,” Rick insisted. “That’s just blatant pig-phobia. I’m surprised at you.” After that, I tried taking a different approach. “Raising a baby pig is a lot of work,” I would say. “They have to be fed with a bottle on a regular basis. With our day jobs and our commute into the city for work, we’re not home enough for a baby pig.” Rick nodded slowly. “You’re right. Baby pigs are a lot of work.” Finally he was listening to common sense. “So we’re not getting a pet pig,” I said. “And that’s final.” About nine months after Rick first mentioned wanting a pet kunekune, he came home from his day job in Wellington with the most horrifying news I have ever heard in my entire life. “I found us a kunekune pig,” he said. “We agreed we can’t take care of a baby pig,” I said. 16 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2011 Issue #21
Jared with Old Lady Lucy.
Rick smiled broadly. “This one’s not a baby.” It turns out that Rick’s manager’s manager, Grant, had a 12-year-old pet kunekune named Lucy. She was a childhood pet for Grant’s two young sons years ago, along with another pig named Lily. But the boys were grown and gone now, and Lucy’s pig-friend Lily had died as well. Old Lady Lucy was sad and lonely. “Grant said we can have Lucy,” Rick said proudly. “We just have to go over and pick her up. Since she’s old, she’s calm and docile. She’s perfect for us.” Two months later he was still rattling on about it, and I finally broke down. It was like some kind of bizarre psychological torture, and I just couldn’t handle it anymore. “Okay, okay. You can have your damn pig, but you have to take care of her. And there’s one unbreakable rule. No pigs in the house.” Rick smiled. “Patricia down the road lets her little pig Sammy come inside by the fire when it’s cold outside.” “No. Absolutely not. Never. I swear to God if I ever see that pig in our house, I’ll call the homekill guy and have her turned into bacon.” “Well, you don’t have to get nasty about it,” Rick said. “We’re picking her up next Saturday.” “What? You already scheduled it?” “I knew you’d give in,” he said. He’d arranged for us to meet our pig loving friends, Leelee and the Wolf, at their house at 10am. They were more than happy to help Rick in his quest for pig parenting. They had a truck with a large trailer that would hold a 12-year-old pig. “Lucy lives over on the Kapiti Coast,” Rick said. “I can’t wait to go get her.” I resigned myself to the fact that soon, whether I liked it or not, our top paddock would be home to a very large, hairy pig.

Architectural Air Lisa Carruthers talks to Martinborough’s Victoria Read about her passion for creating modern, airy and light-filled living spaces for families – spaces that reflect the Wairarapa landscape and respond to the unique climate here.
“Y
ou don’t need to have the biggest house,” Victoria Read tells me, “you just have to have the best designed house to suit your wants, needs and lifestyle.” And she should know. Victoria has been designing houses ever since she was old enough to hold a pencil. As a little girl she used to spend hours drawing and re-drawing her dream home. Becoming an architect was always on the cards (or should I say in the plans), but after designing, building and renovating several homes in and around Wellington, Victoria took a slight career detour. Victoria is originally from the Tora Coast, daughter of late South Wairarapa Mayor, John Read, she moved to Martinborough towards the end of the 1990s and set up Rocket Farm, an organic salad business. “The business did really well,” she says, “and, at the time, I was also working hard on the renovations of our own home and designing new houses for clients. So I was able to combine two of the things I love best – growing plants and architectural design.” ogether with partner Tim Martin (owner of Martinborough’s Circus Cinema and a direct descendant of the original Martin family), Victoria transformed an ancient, run-down barn into a light and bright modern home with five bedrooms, two offices, two bathrooms, a statuesque spiral staircase in the kitchen – and plenty of living space for her large family. The house is on the site of an old abattoir and dates back to the 1860’s – before Tim’s family arrived in the area, named the town and brought Martinborough to life. “We wanted to create a modern, family home,” she says, “but we

also wanted to preserve the sense of history of the site and the structure. This meant that wherever possible we kept original features and used natural materials to compliment the old design. We also wanted the look and feel of the house to be in keeping with the surrounding Wairarapa countryside.” Rocket Farm was passed onto new owners several years ago but Victoria still dabbles in market gardening in her kitchen veggie plot – with her two youngest sons Johnny and Louie – but says her focus is now on further developing her architecture business, Victoria Read Architectural Design. She currently has a mix of clients, residents from the region, local businesses as well as Wellingtonians looking to move to the Wairarapa for the lifestyle.

Man ‘o Manolo
“On a woman’s leg, a shoe is like a piece of jewellery” Manolo Blahnik, shoe designer
Julie Kidd discusses the love of shoes with local shoe aficionados
I
was shaking as I handed over the £95. My entire week’s wages on a pair of Italian, black leather riding-style boots. Purchased at Russell and Bromley on Oxford Street, London, winter 1979. I reasoned I could eat soup at the pub and survive on my wits until next payday. Let’s face it. We have all done it. Thrown ourselves head first into temporary poverty for the sake of a pair of must-have shoes. The fact that we do it knowingly, willingly and happily is a sure sign of a true shoe-lover says Cushla Reed, shoe designer and manufacturer of the gorgeous Minx brand. Her style has taken Kiwi shoe couture to dizzy new heights, particularly since the launch of her new brand, Cushla Reed: The Minx. Available in Greytown, her shoes are beautifully styled and incredibly comfortable. And with sizes going up to 46 (size thirteen), there truly is a shoe for every woman. Cushla is very connected to her Minx customer describing her as a ‘princess with a professional twist’. “Wow”, I say breathlessly (hoping I fit the bill). “And, um, how many pairs of shoes do you actually own?” “Oh” she ponders, “about 130”. I nearly curtsied. racie Donald of Saunders Shoes recalls the first pair of shoes she fell in love with – black patent Mary Janes. She was three. Looking back on her teens, she is now so very grateful shoe styling has come such a long way. She recalls pinched toes, raw heels and the insane burning of the balls of her feet from ill-fitting but oh-so-fashionable shoes. “The gorgeous soft, buttery leather of today’s shoes from Spain and Italy are testament to the fact that you can enjoy stunning style as well as great comfort,” she sighs. Her mantra - borrowed from the great Bette Midler – “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world” came to light when she stepped out on a limb and purchased Saunders Shoes in Masterton two years ago. Business is thriving and she manages to keep her personal collection on the low side as she wears each season’s latest styles. I guess you could call that an occupational hazard. One I would dearly love to be burdened with. To fill the gap in the market for stylish, affordable shoes and handbags, Andrea Britton imports an exclusive range of Europeandesigned shoes and sells them from her signature store, Chick

Pea, in Petone and outlet store in Masterton. I have three pairs and counting. Her personal collection is a healthy 129. Excellent, I thought. I can’t wait to tell my husband. I have a meager 54 pairs – not counting golf shoes (4), jandals (numerous) and gumboots (2). Phew. Head over heels for over the top heels “On a woman’s leg, a shoe is like a piece of jewellery”, Manolo Blahnik, shoe designer ou only had to watch one episode of Sex in the City to realise the ‘Manolos’ were not characters in the show, but a super-sexy pair of shoes. So often referred to, the shoe became synonymous with the show. In an interesting twist however, shoe design supremo Manolo Blahnik had humble beginnings – growing up on a banana plantation in the Canary Islands - and has been heard to comment that he “struggles with the US culture”, finding it too shallow. Crikey. His shoe journey began when he watched local cobblers make his mother’s stunning espadrilles – copied out of US Vogue and Glamour magazines, that would arrive from Cuba and Argentina months after their publication. Now 68 years old with a multimillion dollar empire, he still single-handedly designs and crafts each pair of heels. In accordance with traditional cobbler rules, he keeps one of the first pair of every shoe he makes. Always the left. These now number 2700. Aren’t you just dying to know what he does with all the right foots?
Y
Do you have your Jimmy’s? nother brand thrown about by fashionistas is Jimmy Choo. Regarded as a fashion staple, the expression ‘a pair of Jimmys’ appears often in the press, television and film. Hailing from a humble family of shoemakers in his native Malaysia, Jimmy Choo made his first pair of shoes at age 11. He paid his way through the London College of Fashion by working as a cleaner in a shoe factory. He made beautiful shoes, but only a handful at a time. Fortunately, his fashion student neighbour knew the girls at Vogue magazine and he ended up with an unprecedented eight page spread. Before long Princess Diana summoned him to Kensington Palace and a pair of pink pumps was ordered. The rest, of course, is history. Selling his 50% stake for a cool $US10m in 2001 has helped him realise another dream – opening a design school in his native land for budding shoe and fashion designers. My gorgeous Italian boots have served me well. Re-soled and re-heeled at least a dozen times, they are as beautiful today as they were 30-something years ago. I love them, wear them every winter and will not part with them. The last word on shoes sits with our esteemed editor, Raewyn Watson. She swanned into an editorial meeting in the swankiest gumboots imaginable. Bear in mind dear readers, it was early summer and a tad hot for said footwear. We couldn’t do anything else but ask – where did you get those? Eyebrows raised, “These?” Yes, those! “Bought in David Jones in Sydney for a stunning $AUD%#*!.00. Armani darling”. We all threw our heads back and howled with joy. So gals, as we have been saying to our husbands all along, quality pays and there is no such thing as too many shoes. And that includes gumboots.

Designs fon Living There’s a sleek black Retrovelo bicycle parked on the deck of Len Cheeseman’s immaculately renovated 50s home in Greytown. It’s no surprise given this awardwinning typographer, designer and creative director has built his career on lateral thinking and an unerring visual sense. By Anne Taylor.
“I
t’s my response to the lycra brigade,” says Len, who dons a classic straw hat for short trips into Greytown, and would like to see the emerging global trend of ‘slow bicycling’ adopted for an event in the town – accompanied by a long, slow lunch. What is surprising is that this stylish cycle regularly chews up many miles of Wairarapa asphalt, including the circuit from Moreton Road, Carterton, to Martinborough and back. It has also carried Len up the gravel road to the Waiohine Gorge, apparently quite comfortably. Originally from Kent, Len studied commercial design at Camberwell School of Arts, London, during the 1970’s, then worked as Type Director for some of the noted advertising agencies of the 1980’s. He moved to New Zealand in 1992 to take up the position of Type Director at Saatchi & Saatchi, Wellington. During this ‘boom time’ the agency was considered one of the top 10 in the world. Here Len had many successes and became known for arresting campaigns based on creative typography such as the Frida Kahlo ‘Vida la Viva’ and Parihaka exhibitions for City Gallery Wellington. He departed the “Saatchi machine” in 2004, and has in the past two years scaled back his work and relocated to Greytown with wife Pauline. His daughters had grown up and he’d got “sick of gardening on a hillside”. e recently set up a small Wellington-based design company called Ornament with a number of former colleagues, and young designers, and developed the eye-catching branding for the major exhibition Wairarapa Moana, showing at Aratoi, Masterton until May. Len, together with his principal assistant, Amanda Oliver, researched an historic book on Maori carving at Te Papa and briefed the young Taiwanese designer Luke Fan. The result is a striking blend of abstract design and realistic spiraling eels. It’s clear the senior designer enjoyed watching this young Whanganui graduate develop the project, and feels that it’s great to be giving at least one aspiring designer some valuable work experience. “It will all be useful in this changed digital world as so much work

moves online,” he says. “But there will always be a place for beautiful, precious books, and bespoke items like the piece of film I worked on as part of the creative team last year for the NZ Book Council.” Called Going West, this uses amazing stop frame papercut animation (check it out on YouTube), and won many awards last year including two gold awards at Cannes. long with biking, which was a way to commute (via the train) to his office near the waterfront, Len has been able to thoroughly indulge his passion for gardening in Greytown. Predictably this has been all about creating beautiful design in three dimensions. The lawn-less, grid layout leads to a stunning back garden, with the focal point a large Paul Dibble sculpture called Huia Feather and Celestial Ball. “A book I bought last year Plant Driven Design by Scott Ogden is informing the approach quite a lot, and I’m a big fan of Carol Klein’s series Life in a Cottage Garden,” says Len. He has a few gripes about living in Greytown, including the “draconian” ban on dogs in Kuratawhiti Street’s Memorial Park, and being turned away at Woodside Station due to lack of space for bikes on the train: “In Europe they have bike pumps actually in the carriages. It’s another world and we are not embracing it.” It’s the lack of imaginative problem-solving that rankles even more than the personal inconvenience to him and his two Sealyham terriers. Other than that, there have never been too many regrets about moving to New Zealand. And with a glass of wine in hand and the sun dipping over to the west, it would be hard to design a better way of life than what he’s found in Greytown. A moment in time that will last forever Lisa Carruthers pauses for a peek at Red Barn Art - Martinborough’s newest gallery
M
att Guild is a wholesome kind of Kiwi guy. He’s inspired by family life and rustic simplicity. He loves New Zealand. He loves the countryside. He’s happy in the rural setting of his Martinborough home and he’s thrilled that work on his new studio and art gallery is now all finished. “Completing the Red Barn Art studio and gallery means I can work comfortably from home, drawing on my surroundings for inspiration. And I can now share my work with others,” says Matt. Matt’s art is bold and solid. His paintings seem, somehow, decent, honest, reliable even. And there’s something deeply satisfying about looking at an image of a familiar object – a WeetBix box…a can of Watties Tomato Sauce…a five dollar bill…an empty Jaffa wrapper. There’s also a hint of Andy Warhol here – think Campbell’s vegetable soup. Matt has the extraordinary ability of finding a dimension to every day objects that would pass most of us by. His art captures the essence of typical New Zealand life – and shows us this in little snapshots. “Realism painting for me is about experiences or simple amusements that extract memories and forgotten moments,” says Matt. “Time stands still for a short while when you place these objects out of the context. “This sense of timelessness is what links us all together,” Matt explains. “My aim is to jog memories and jolt emotions. I want the viewer to re-experience reality by looking at these seemingly mundane objects in a different light. I want people to see the beauty in things that are quite ordinary and, perhaps, feel a sense of Kiwi pride.“ Certainly, these still life images are so full of Kiwi goodness that you do feel a warm glow inside. Matt says he loves capturing these everyday bits and pieces which, he believes, are the reality of living. “I love the way a certain object looks in a moment of time. And I love how these frozen moments help us remember where we have come from and where we have been.” Red Barn Art studio gallery is open to the public weekdays and every second weekend. Private viewings can be arranged.

connected to the land and history Working alone in a garret was never going to suit Masterton ceramic artist Sam Ludden: “It’s just not part of my personality,” he says. Now he and partner Janine Ogg are combining their art, development and business skills to engage with the local community and raise awareness about Wairarapa rivers along the way.
W
aitangi Day saw Sam and Janine at Queen Elizabeth Park launching a series of T-shirts to raise awareness of the plight of the Ruamahanga River. Screen-printed by Shannon Gibbs, their near neighbour in historic Victoria St, the T-shirts feature native eels (‘tuna’ in Maori) and the giant spotted kopoku, and bear the slogan ‘Ruamahunga River, To Tatou Awa – Our river, our responsibility’. The catalyst for the couple was realizing how much the Wairarapa waterways had changed in the few short years they were away in Europe and China. “The worst aspect is that the Ruamahanga has been used as a drain rather than a habitat, with effluent from farming, industry and treated sewerage still flowing into it,” says Sam. The 130km long river, which starts in the Tararuas and runs to Cook Strait via Lake Wairarapa, has been straightened and manipulated over the decades to counter seasonal flooding. This alters water flow and oxygen levels, affecting the species living there. Sam has more understanding than most about local waterways having grown up “mucking around on the water”, and working as a commercial eeler in the 1990s alongside local Matt Paku and his whanau. He had an unusual upbringing for a Pakeha – his parents taught at the Kohanga Reo – and this gave him a strong affinity for Wairarapa and the natural environment. “When you grow up in the Maori world, you are always being told that you are the future,” says Sam. In those days, eels thrived in local waterways, but have since become severely depleted. Eels have since become a recurring form in his ceramics, symbolizing for him the health of our environment. “Whenever people see my ceramic eels, they immediately want to tell me about their own river encounters with eels, their experiences on rivers,” he says. This happened at the park, where Sam set up his pottery wheel in the sweltering heat and started talking to fascinated children and adults about what he was doing and why. Seeing the value in these stories, Janine and a group of local river enthusiasts are recording them on video for posterity. Joining Sustainable Wairarapa was an important move for the couple when they returned to New Zealand. They helped plant 6000 natives at the Makoura Stream restoration project, and seeing what could be done there decided to focus on the Ruamahanga. Cue the T-shirts. Janine also set up www.wainotgogreen.org, a hub of information about the Ruamahanga work, buying T-shirts, ethical shopping, building, and local green events: “We wanted to provide a place where people living in Wairarapa or moving back here could go to find out what was happening.”

Sam will be working with educator Warren Field at Papawai, Greytown, as part of the Enviroschools programme. And they are both raising their baby daughter Isabella. “People say you can’t do anything about what’s happening to our environment, but it is becoming easier to get involved. Find something you are passionate about and you can make a difference,” says Sam. It could be very simple, says Janine: “If you haven’t been down to your local river recently go down and take a look for yourself, visit www.wainotgogreen.org and get involved with a local river or environmental initiative”. Amongst all of this, Sam’s creativity seems undiminished. In fact, meeting Janine and combining their skills has given a greater impetus to his work: “You never run out of inspiration when you are connected to the land and your history,” he says. Rugby on her mind Greytown’s Catherine Rossiter-Stead has been appointed as the Wairarapa’s Rugby World Cup organiser. Here she tells Katie Farman how the region can help make the tournament an outstanding success. By Katie Farman,

ou can’t accuse Catherine RossiterStead of clock watching. With less than seven months to go to the start of the New Zealand hosted Rugby World Cup (RWC), the Wairarapa RWC organiser is busy formulating plans that will help the region showcase its arts, food and wine, heritage and culture with a series of experiences, exhibitions, outdoor events and a week-long festival. “Every community in New Zealand will have a part to play in RWC 2011 and the Wairarapa is no different,” says Catherine. “We’ll have all sorts of projects going on in the region as we prepare to host the Georgian team and a number of international visitors. There are lots of ways people can get involved, whether it’s as a school, club or as a business and I’m working to co-ordinate all these groups so we can create a spectacular series of events here. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and my role is to enhance the event for the people of the Wairarapa.” Catherine has already spent the past few months doing everything from recruiting volunteers, meeting groups and businesses who want to contribute and even searching for a fluent Georgian interpreter to aid communication between the people of the Wairarapa and the team which the region plays host to. She recently met with the Georgian assistant coach and put forward a number of exciting Wairarapa actvities for the team to take part in. A website www.projectgeorgia.net has also been specifically set up to encourage Wairarapa students to adopt Georgia as their second team.
U16 teams. Catherine made headlines back in her native England in 2001 when she became a mum to her second daughter Amy in the same week that she became the first woman in the Midlands (and the second nationally) to achieve the RFU’s elite adult level two rugby coaching award. “It was a big deal at the time, as when Amy came into this world I was also delivered my senior coaching certificate, which was the culmination of years of hard work both on and off the field.” Catherine is also no stranger to the RWC, having been inspired to play after watching the 1991 tournament and then being appointed as ‘promoting the game officer’ in the build-up to the 1999 showpiece. By this stage she had already made her mark as the first ever woman to be appointed to the North Midlands executive committee. Since relocating to New Zealand in 2006 with her husband Sam, who juggles his time as commercial manager for the Wellington Rugby Union and the Hurricanes; communications manager for the NZI Sevens and Chairman of the National Basketball League, Catherine says she can think of nowhere better to live. She enjoys taking her three young children out walking in the Tararuas, plays hockey for Gladstone, touch rugby for More FM and spends her ‘spare’ time tramping or cycling around the countryside. Catherine can be contacted on 027 438 8075 or catherine@wairarapanz.com

The tunnel house project Experiencing the ups and downs of gardening in the tunnel house, each season Raewyn Watson tries to learn by her mistakes.
I
t’s a jungle in there! It was the tomatoes that took over the tunnel house this summer. Kilo upon kilo of sweet, mouth watering fruit, all different shapes and sizes. But there is one thing I have learnt - ONLY one plant per 200cms. Yet again I made the mistake of overplanting as I planted one at the front and another at the back! These plants are now over 2meters high and it’s difficult to easily access the fruit at the back without performing some strange contortions. Brushing against the plants, the smell seeps into my skin, so heady and reminiscent of summer. As a young girl I would help mum bottle fruit and other preserves but I had never done it by myself before, so armed with the Edmonds cookbook I meticulously followed the instructions: clean jars in boiling water, sterilise, make sauce. Grown in the tunnel house the San Marzano tomato, with its pungent flesh, is ideal for making sauce and relishes as it is very meaty and full of intoxicating flavours. Now my pantry proudly boasts several rows of tomato sauce ready to use over the coming year. And there’s still several more kilos waiting to ripen on the vines, especially the beef steak that are just starting to redden, the plants groaning with the weight of the fruit. The peppers - red, green, cayenne and cabernet in the tunnel house - are doing very well and we have had a constant supply over summer for use in salads and other dishes, with plenty still on the plants. The eggplants are doing OK but have had a hard time as the chickens got into the tunnel house and seemed to enjoy the soft soil around the plants, scratching in the dirt and uprooting some of them. Speaking of chickens, yes well there’s something to be said for free range but when they infringe on my territory they’re in trouble! One day I came out to the garden and there they were, scratching around in the raised beds outside and eating all of the Pak Choi and lettuces. Gone, my beautiful lettuces that had fed us for weeks. So I called in reinforcements. Kelly, our blue heeler, is a pretty smart cookie and now I have trained him to herd up the chickens when they approach the garden. ‘Round them up’ is the command and he quickly starts chasing them out of the garden and back into their space. Very effective if you can handle the barking. I am starting off some seedlings so once the plants inside the tunnel house have finished they can be planted out, but learning from my mistakes last year, I am going to be more prudent about how much I plant inside. Outside things are booming with the wonderful warm weather we have had over summer. Some of the potatoes are still in the ground as I read that if you leave them until the plant naturally withers this toughens them up and they will last longer over the winter. The freezer is full of beans, broad beans, cauliflower,
32 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2011 Issue #21
broccoli, peas, while the pantry is stocked with potatoes, pumpkin, onions and garlic. So it’s been a bountiful summer. The task ahead for autumn is to prepare the ground for the winter crops once the plants have died down. Again I will plant green manure crops such as mustard and lupin in the potato plot as this puts nitrogen back into the soil. Pukaha Mount Bruce opens its beautifully renovated kiwi house.
Birdseye view
Julie Kidd swoops in and checks it out.
t is an easy 20 minute drive to Pukaha Mount Bruce from Masterton. With a car load of kids, it is made more peaceful with the purchase of a generously scooped ice-cream from Renall Street Dairy. Dear reader take note; make sure you only ask for the kiddie cone. Recently Prime Minister John Key was stumped with their normal ‘double cone’. His four enormous scoops of icy confection very quickly made its way down the cone and hand and on to his immaculate cuff. Uh oh. Have plenty of napkins on hand in the car. Wiping our faces and hands, we clambered out of the car and went into reception. Although bursting to see the new kiwi house, we find it impossible to walk past the fantastic interactive gallery. I am always drawn to the wonderful display of the extinct huia, which shows what it looked like and how it sounded. It was a great pity that when the Duke and Duchess of York visited Rotorua in 1902 the host chief presented him with a huia feather, much prized for its beauty and rarity. The Duke placed it in the band of his bowler hat, immediately making a fashion statement that increased the demand a hundredfold. The birds were extinct within five years. The feathers remain high in value. Just last year a huia feather was sold at auction in Auckland for $8400, a world-breaking price for a feather. I fear we have all paid a much higher price for its loss. In the next room the kids are captivated discovering forest facts and figures using the latest touch screen digital technology. Superb. However, it was the newly renovated kiwi house we were here to visit so we made our way down the path and entered through the smart new welcome pavilion and boardwalk. Costing approximately $1.2m, the upgrade is spectacular with beautiful natural wood walls, highly accessible displays, cool colours and dimmed lights. The two existing kiwi enclosures have been completely renovated and fitted out with replica forests. There is great viewing of both pairs of kiwi from the high, wide windows. A terrific new feature is the behind-the-scenes view into the incubation room and nursery where kiwi chicks hatch and are cared for until they are returned to the forest. There is a two-way intercom so visitors can chat to the rangers as they go about their work. We were enthralled by the three movies showing in the Kiwi Theatre, a comfortable, 50-seat theatre with a huge screen. The movies vary in length, between five and 10 minutes, and feature the Flight of the Kiwi (how 30 kiwi were trans-located from Little Barrier Island to Pukaha last year), Whatonga (the relationship between forest and people with an emphasis on local iwi) and Restoring the Balance, a unique peep in to what the dedicated rangers do at Pukaha on a day-to-day basis. All superbly produced and completely engaging; our kids were glued.

Add to this a terrific new display of forest and stream critters to help us understand the part each and every creepycrawly, eel or mudfish plays in the eco-system of a thriving forest. And we cannot forget our favourite living dinosaur, the tuatara, in his new abode. We lingered in the wonderful building for well over an hour, searching, seeking and spotting new and fun things. An amazing day out. Given Pukaha Mount Bruce’s forest was completely silent just 10 years ago the dedicated team has done a fantastic job restoring the forest, returning the birdsong and developing a world-class must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. Entrance prices are a song as a family can visit for less than a visit to the movies and annual membership provides incredible value for money as you can visit as often as you like. You can join up when you visit and the price of your entrance that day is included in the yearly pass. On the return trip home the kids prattled on about what they had seen and learned that day, wistfully glancing over their shoulders as we passed the infamous icecream dairy.
NEW KIWI HOUSE NOW OPEN Superb viewing as well as behind the scenes peep in to the nursery and incubation room. A variety of short films shown daily. Visit Pukaha Mount Bruce this summer and enjoy the stunning loop walk, ranger talks and new kiwi chicks.

BRACKENRIDGE Eleven years after first opening its doors and nearly 350 weddings later, Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa is going strong. Arguably Wairarapa’s leading wedding destination, Brackenridge was conceived and built as a flexible, multi-purpose venue in Martinborough. At the same time, no other local business was willing or able to provide a comprehensive wedding package. Managing Director Cathie Morison regards it as a privilege, along with her committed staff, to guide a bride and groom through planning their special day. Her experience and knowledge means she can direct a couple to local photographers, florists, musicians and caterers who best fit their requirements. Over the years, Brackenridge has also formed a close relationship with Providore Food & Catering and the two teams work seamlessly together. Brackenridge’s self-contained cottages and studios, which are dotted around the grounds, its gym and saltwater lap pool which is available to onsite guests, and the option of the bridal party having their makeup applied in the luxurious spa facilities all combine to create a ‘holiday village’ atmosphere. Some of the most memorable occasions in recent years have been the increasingly popular fire-side winter weddings – maybe that’s because of the special winter rates and the option of bringing your own beverages!

LISA WILSON Lisa Wilson Photography provides a fresh, relaxed and contemporary feel to your special day. “My approach is to find something that no one else can see and create a unique image for your enjoyment for years to come,”says Lisa. “I know that you put so much thought into the small things that make your day personal, be it shoes, table settings or the colour of the flowers. So, my aim is to capture the moments’ emotions ...the slight nervousness before the ceremony, the bridesmaids doing their last minute preparations, the groom waiting anxiously, through to the evenings’ glow and relaxed celebrations. So, along with the traditional images, for me, capturing the details sometimes evokes the happiest memories when looking back over your wedding album or portrait.” REDFERN PHOTOGRAPHICS Redfern Photographics is a Masterton based photography business offering quality and affordability in wedding, commercial and portrait photography. EMPOROS Emporos, which means merchant or trader, continues to bring quality and style to the heart of Greytown’s heritage precinct. They opened over 13 years ago in the former Bank of New Zealand building where the main focus was mid to high end antique country furniture and decorative accessories, sourced in rural areas of the UK and France. Their regular customers became interested in the fabrics they were buying in France to use with the antiques and their well loved home textile importing enterprise was born. Today, based in the former St Andrews church which was relocated to Greytown from Fordell, the store is a miniature Emporium selling useful and decorative wares primarily for the home [they have a passion for cooking, so lots of goodies for the kitchen]. Their ranges are extensive and they are customer orientated and flexible. Working with you on a wedding register or helping you to choose a special little something for your friends and family is what you can expect, whatever your budget. In 2011 Emporos look forward to welcoming you to the reopening of the former bank building which includes a new fabric showroom and some of their special and individual collections. Emporos are now proud to be selling the domestic wares of New Zealand potter Tony Sly which will be featured along side the work of Greytown’s favorite artist Gary Tricker. Expect to find vintage and antique pieces, their jewellery collections and more.

Timeless, because most of what they play comes from the 60’s era, much of it has since been revived, and it’s enjoyed equally by young and old. In November the Dynamos played in succession for a 65th birthday, a 40th birthday, a special Twist and Rock and Roll event, and then a wedding for a couple in their early 30’s. Denny said that at each event the guests sang and danced from ‘whoa-to-go’ with songs from the Beatles, Elvis, Neil Diamond, the Bee Gees being the most popular. The Dynamos are perfect to dance and sing along with and perform lively music but Denny insists they are not a 'loud band' and this makes them ideal for private functions and weddings. The line up is keyboards, rhythm, bass guitar and vocals. ADRIENNE STAPLES - CELEBRANT Your wedding celebration should be one of the happiest milestones in your life and my aim as a celebrant is to help make it so. Whether you want a simple low key ceremony or something more lavish, the occasion should reflect who you are and what you mean to each other. Working with you, I can put together a service that does just this. Whether you wish to marry on a mountain or somewhere more traditional, you have a special theme or colour scheme, I can cater for most requirements. Whatever mood is right for you, romantic, serious, wacky or anything in between, I will be happy to help you create your perfect day.

WAIRARAPA WEDDING GUIDE
Tickling the ivories ... “E
xcellent playing! Beautiful!” Without pausing in his rendition of Cole Porter’s Begin the Beguine, award-winning pianist Andre Mendes da Costa looked up from the keyboard of the Steinway concert grand piano and saw the smiling face of Sir Howard Morrison, who had risen from his seat to applaud Andre’s performance. The occasion was the Kaumatua Ball, Masterton Town Hall, May 2009. Later in the evening, Andre asked the veteran performer whether he would be performing later. Sir Howard replied, “Yes, and I brought along a backing track—but then I didn’t know they had someone like you playing!” Such comments are typical of the reactions Andre receives after an evening’s performance on piano. Whether he is performing for an intimate evening with friends or at a corporate function, the Wairarapa-based pianist receives extremely favourable reviews. Born in the Southland town of Gore, Andre’s family moved to Whitianga while he was still very young, and it was there on the Coromandel peninsula where he grew up, spending most of his childhood at Thames, where at the age of seven he began learning the piano. It was discovered very quickly that Andre had a gift for music when he would start playing songs after only hearing them. It perhaps comes as no surprise to learn that Andre is a close relative of well-known New Zealand musician and former TVNZ arranger Garth Young. From Cole Porter to Bic Runga and almost everything in between, Andre pulls songs out of the air with ease. His subtle ability to read the crowd and play accordingly has made 58 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2011 Issue #21
From Dubai, South East Asia, Wellington to Masterton, Andre Mendes da Costa has astounded audiences with his ability to get inside the music and capture the heart of the pieces.
him a popular choice for those who want music to suit a wide variety of age groups. Andre’s former high school teacher, UK-based musician John Mullon, recently observed: “I have known Andre since he was 11. He had something special as a musician then and this has continued to where he is now. His skill and empathy with the music whatever the genre shows his ability to get inside the music and capture the heart of the piece. People who know him know that this is what sums up Andre – the person and the musician.” In 2003 Andre and his family moved from Wellington to Masterton, and in recent years he has been extended opportunities to take up positions on cruise ships and the luxury hotel circuit in places like Dubai and South East Asia. However, for personal and family reasons he prefers to keep his feet on home base, at least for the time being. In 2009 and 2010 Andre was winner at the Corporate Events Guide ‘People’s Choice Awards’ and he continues to be sought after for weddings and events where discreet live background music is appreciated. If you are looking for intimate background music for your wedding, Andre’s playing will help your guests relax and enjoy their surroundings as they arrive, while at the same time lending an understated elegance to the occasion that only an experienced musician can provide. TASTE - A DINING GUIDE
Autumn Temptations - a dining guide Summer brings with it long warm days and a desire for lighter fare. The Wairarapa region provides abundant fresh, tender produce, succulent seafood and delectable wines. It’s time to indulge and taste what’s on the menu at our local eateries.
The Tin Hut dates from 1857 and has a colourful history as a local pub. For 151 years the Tin Hut has serviced travellers, visitors and the local South Wairarapa community. The Tin Hut was named in 1923 when the original pub, The Tauherenikau Hotel, burnt down. A temporary premise, a corrugated iron hut, was constructed and the locals affectionately named it The Tin Hut. In 2004 Marcus Darley bought the Tin Hut with the view to developing an environment which could be soothing and reflective for visitors, a focal point for the South Wairarapa district and meet the needs of families. Located on the main road between Greytown and Featherston, The Tin Hut provides a chic, informal dining area, a comfortable and warm bar to ease winter chills, and a beautiful garden to while away lazy sunny days. ‘The Famous Tin Hut Weekend Roast are the best value in the district! Often imitated but never bettered, a Tin Hut Roast is a full 3-course meal served in our warm and cosy dining room. Add a glass or two of one of our great value local wines and you will be back week after week after week. Available Saturday & Sunday, lunch and dinner”, says Marcus.
Bloom Restaurant and Terrace is located at Murdoch James Estate just outside Martinborough village and is set amongst the beautiful surroundings of the working vineyard. Enjoy a quiet cup of coffee on the terrace or a meal accompanied by wines from Murdoch James Estate. The menu is fresh and seasonal and the clean flavours match the wines from the vineyard. The professional yet friendly service perfectly complements the beautifully styled and inviting interior. Taking full advantage of Bloom’s terrace overlooking the estate provides you with a unique and beautiful Martinborough experience that should not be missed. The benefit of the adjacent cellar door allows a wonderful opportunity to take a reminder of your visit with you. Bloom is open five days a week, Thursday to Monday, from 11am with the nights set aside for private gatherings such as weddings, corporate or business events and large groups. While everyone is always welcome, reservations are recommended for the weekends which can become particularly busy. The philosophy of Bloom is that your time with them is to be enjoyed and they work hard to make sure that this is achieved.

Café Mirabelle has just celebrated its third birthday and owner/chef Megan Rochery says it’s been a rollercoaster ride that has taken her and French husband Olivier by surprise. When they opened in late 2007 the plan was for daytime trading with breakfasts and lunches, plus of course fine French pastries, baking and good coffee. As business grew, Café Mirabelle’s many regular patrons started enquiring about evening bookings and so the opening hours expanded. Now Friday and Saturday evenings are the bistrostyle café’s busiest times. Megan’s enthusiasm for authentic country style French dishes ensures a regularly changing a la carte menu and once a month she and Olivier host special regional evenings with a set menu focussing on a particular region of France. Favourite dishes? Customers seem to love Megan’s Cassoulet, a classic southwest France dish of slow cooked white beans and confits of pork, duck and lamb. But then of course there’s the Coq au Vin, the Boeuf Bourguignon, or the Magret de Canard avec Sauce Cassis. . . you’d better get along and decide for yourself!
