I
have had to be very self-disciplined over the last few weeks, with the stunning summer days proving to be quite a temptation to go for a swim or walk, instead of working. However, I resisted and finally, Issue #29. The annual Wairarapa Wedding Guide features venues, menus, hair, beauty and services, proving that our region is the ultimate wedding destination. Not only does it have wonderful natural elements to use as a backdrop, like mountain views, endless skies and vines, there is also an array of country churches, gracious gardens, stately homes and rustic barns. Geoff Walker, a local photographer, exhibits his magnificent photographs taken on a recent trip to Uganda, of the people from the village of Rackoko in Pader District. There are plenty of events taking place over the season, including Golden Shears, Martinborough Fair, Harvest Festival, Balloon Festival, and Round the Vines, so be sure to bookmark your calendar. We profile lots of interesting people in this issue, from artists to entrepreneurs, who make the Wairarapa such an interesting place to live. Thanks to our advertisers who make this magazine possible with their support. Hope you enjoy this issue and see you again in Winter. Cheers Raewyn.

Wairarapa Development Group (WDG)
T
he Wairarapa Development Group (WDG) wants to help unleash the commercial opportunities of local events and projects and is urging businesses and event organisers, who want to improve the local economy, to get in touch. The offer of assistance follows the success of last month’s Wings Over Wairarapa Air Show, attended by more than 30,000 people over the three days. Shane McManaway, WDG Chairman and member of the Wings Over Wairarapa Board, explains: “The WDG is committed to improving the economic prosperity of the Wairarapa. We are a group of local businessmen and women from a wide range of commercial
snippets... P
backgrounds and are here to offer our help and support to anyone who is investing in the region – maybe through their business or an event.” The WDG became involved with Wings 18 months ago in a move to maximise the economic return of the show and help steer the event into the future. Shane McManaway, with fellow group members Bob Francis and Nick Rogers, joined the Wings Board of Trustees to give hands-on help and advice. Shane says, “Wings Over Wairarapa 2013 has just demonstrated that events like this have tremendous pulling power and have good potential to give the local economy a financial boost. Last month’s show was the biggest and best yet. This puts our region on the map, increases confidence, hopefully encourages further investment and directly benefits our local businesses.” Jerry Crump, general manager of Masterton’s Copthorne Hotel & Resort, Solway Park, confirms that the Wings weekend was good for his business. “We were fully booked with over 90% of our hotel guests there for Wings Over Wairarapa,“ he says. “Feedback about the air show was really positive and we’re already reserving rooms for the 2015 event.” imilarly, Alice Buchanan, joint-owner of Masterton’s Entice Café and Catering, says that Wings Over Wairarapa impacted positively on her business. “Our café in town was significantly busier because of the air show. Wings also gave us the opportunity of showcasing the catering side of our business to an international audience.“ She adds, “it was the first time Entice has been involved with Wings and we were impressed. It was superbly organised, the place was buzzing, the atmosphere was tremendous and everyone just loved being there.” The WDG is self-funded and independent. It comprises Alastair Scott, Anders Crofoot, Bob Francis, David Borman, Donovan Wearing, James Smallwood, Kay McAulay, Nick Rogers, Peter Munn, Robin Dunlop, Shane McManaway and Wendy Morrison. As well as Wings Over Wairarapa, the group is also involved with Kokomai, the Wairarapa Arts Festival, and Heartland Wairarapa – which recently lodged an application for an ASB National Football League franchise.

The magic of make-up
P
ablo Picasso once said, ‘Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life’. When Jo Bentley is applying minerals to the face it’s a transformational experience, not only for the subject but for herself as well. Just recently placed second runner-up in New Zealand for a make-up/photographic competition, Jo’s entry in Professional Skin & Beauty’s ‘Natural New Zealand’ section was one of over 40 images submitted for judging. ‘It was a real honour to have been selected by Auckland judge Nikki Lovrich and quest judge Melissa Gardi (past editor of Harpers Bazaar N.Y, present editor of Weddings magazine N.Z.) as it’s a pretty tough competition.” Jo said. The image shoot by top New Zealand photographer Esther Bunning, was chosen as it reflected originality in the styling, was very creative and the make-up application was excellent. A before and after image of Jo’s model, Hana Brough, was required with no post editing or photo shopping along with application notes and styling inspiration. ‘The elemental forces of nature (fire, earth, air and water) were incorporated to reflect a balance of harmony through movement, colour and natural materials in the head dress. Paua, cabbage tree bark, toi toi, wool, lichen, feathers, cactus and flax flowers on a flax band gave a bohemian effect. The
rugged outline depicts the coastline; wild and free, while the central core and make-up application is warm, soft and beautiful just like New Zealand. o has worked with world renowned mineral brand Jane Iredale for eight years and loves everything about it. It’s pure, beautiful to use and wear‚ says Jo. ‘My artist palette is extensive, I blend, mix and create other colours not available to purchase. Applying make-up to someone’s face is just like painting on a canvas but you already have the three dimensional contour and relief. Adding colour creates unique contrast and depth, softness or strength, brightness or sparkle. It’s pretty soul changing!’

King’s loyal supporters stand tall
W
hen a skeleton found under a carpark in central England was confirmed as King Richard III’s in February, there was more than fleeting interest from South Wairarapa. Deirdre Drysdale (Featherston) and Rob Smith (Greytown), who head the New Zealand branch of the Richard III Society, celebrated with a picnic in Rob’s garden and a few days later were able to see images of a new plastic 3D model of the king’s young face, reconstructed from his skull. Richard III, who was killed aged just 32 during battle in 1485 at the conclusion of the Wars of the Roses, has been portrayed over the centuries as an evil, deformed monster, said to have murdered his two nephews for the throne. William Shakespeare’s play, Richard III, also painted him as a hideous, hump-backed tyrant. Rob and Deirdre, who have endured the ``nutter’’ label from friends and colleagues, believe the find will increase interest in the king’s life and times, reveal some truths and dispel a few myths about his looks, personality and actions. The skeleton shows Richard had a curved spine which could have made one shoulder lower than the other. ``Some people collect matchboxes but we’re interested in Richard III,’’ Rob says. ``I sat up into the early hours waiting for the press conference in England confirming the skeleton was Richard’s.’’ Deirdre’s interest in the 15th Century monarch began with the book The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey and since then she has believed in questioning printed histories. www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz
Deirdre Drysdale and Rob Smith
On the debate over where to bury the king’s remains, New Zealand members of the society were torn between Leicester (where the skeleton was found), York (where he grew up) and Westminster Abbey. There was even one vote for Rob’s Greytown garden. Members meet monthly, dress up every two years for a medieval banquet and convention and Rob and Deirdre would like to travel to the king’s official interment, wherever it may be. Contact Rob Smith on 06 3048 840 for more information. Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29 - 5
Martinborough Real Estate Susan Stephen reports on real estate trends in the local property market
O
verall, the property market continues to be buoyant with momentum expected to build over 2013. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) reported that 74,000 houses were sold in New Zealand during 2012 resulting in a 21% increase on 2011 and the highest annual total since 2007. With mortgage rates at historic lows, the strength of the overall property market in New Zealand has also been evident in the number of mortgage approvals in the past three months. According to REINZ the number of mortgage approvals has increased 23% compared with a year ago. These are all good signs for the local Martinborough property market which has seen a rise in confidence with both buyers and sellers in the area. This has been reflected through the increase in sales at the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 compared with previous years. Susan Stephen, who sells real estate in Martinborough, has observed these trends. In Martinborough there were 38 urban sales totalling $10,850,300 in 2011, whereas in 2012 there were 51 urban sales totalling $14,727,550.
“Martinborough is busy with the fairs, concerts and weddings, and is a great place to enjoy fantastic food at a variety of cafes, buy unique items at boutique shops and explore the numerous vineyards and sample award winning wine. This also brings out buyers looking for their idyllic piece of Martinborough. With a wonderful selection of properties to buy – homes, sections, lifestyle blocks - the area continues to grow in popularity as people realise it is virtually ‘Wellington’s Playground’, only an hour away from the city (close enough to commute) offering so much for all ages!” Out of 22 of the sales in the Martinborough area in the last four months, Susan has been responsible for selling 13 of the properties. She has continued to be kept busy this summer listing a range of properties, and with over 10 years of experience selling property in and around Martinborough has an extensive client database to match buyers with sellers. So if you are looking at buying or selling real estate in and around Martinborough, contact Susan on 0800 787 267 or 06 306 8821 (home). See advertisement page 17.

A taste of Tora
F
or many years now the Tora Coastal Walk has been synonymous with great food. The cuisine has become a highlight of the experience and one of the major points of difference from many other walks. Not surprisingly, many walkers have asked for the recipes and many have suggested a cookbook be available for purchase. At last Jenny Bargh and Kiri Elworthy have brought their culinary skills together with designer Donna Cross to create a beautiful recipe book. Only the most popular recipes have been included in the book, making it a useful and affordable memento. The book is not only for all the people who have relished the cuisine after an exhilarating day walking the magnificent Tora landscape, but also for anyone interested in tried and true, easy to follow recipes. The book can be purchased by emailing toracoastalwalk@wise.net.nz. See advertisement page 48.
Smell the lavender
L
ots of beautiful colour and perfume have been happening on our lavender farms. They stretch around the central region of New Zealand. Wairarapa has become the place to be for growing lavender, making an impact with award winning oils in the competitions carried out by the New Zealand Lavender Growers Association. Lavender growing has been strengthening its existence for over 20 years. Research carried out by Dr Noel Porter of Christchurch has enabled lavender growing to reach high standards of expertise. Our soils in Wairarapa contribute to this excellence. Currently from December onwards, harvesting occurs when different varieties mature. Farms to look out for are the Wairarapa farms of Jenny Holmes, Margaret Hamilton, Jan Abernethy, Pauline Harwood, Richard Airey and Helen Wilson. Just past our boundaries are the farms of Susie White of Te Horo, Sally Engi of Pahiatua and Fran Proffit of Hawkes Bay. So on your journeys around, stop and sniff at the floating aromas.
Martinborough Olive Harvest Festival
I
f you have ever wondered how olives are turned into luscious olive oil, the new Martinborough Olive Harvest Festival will show you. Over the weekend of 29-30 June, inaugural festival-goers will ‘follow that olive’ on its tasty journey from tree to table around Martinborough. “Starting with an olive-themed Leisurely Lunch by enthusiastic local chefs, festivalgoers will join the olive harvest in action, taste virgin oil and even try their own hand at getting olives off trees,” says event manager Susan McLeary. “Olives are a winter crop, so the festival celebrates the cold. “Initiated by the Martinborough Business www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz
Association, the festival seeks to promote the region’s excellent olive oils by creating a bright spot at a generally quiet time in Martinborough. “In addition, a fun night market in Martinborough’s famous Square, handson activities at groves around the district and workshops to explore all aspects of this extraordinarily versatile fruit will all take place over a ‘Saturday lunch to Sunday brunch’ weekend. “One highlight will be Wairarapa Lifestyle contributor Jared Gulian telling stories and reading excerpts from his just-released Moon Over Martinborough book,” Susan concludes. Tickets will go on sale on 1 May. Find out more www.martinboroughnz.com. Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29 - 7
Hallowed Hall
T
he lure of a cute old wooden building and behind-the-shop living has seen Lorraine Hall and her eponymous label, Hall clothing move south along State Highway 2. Tina Finn sidesteps the builders to pay a call. Hall clothing has moved from its Carterton premises behind the Red Moa Gallery and travelled one small town south to Greytown. You will now find the label ensconced in the shop front of a quaint colonial villa a short amble along the footpath from Cuckoo restaurant and cafe. The move from Carterton happened so quickly that owner and designer Lorraine Hall can barely believe it herself, for not only has her eponymous business flown south but, after a lifetime living in Masterton, she has bought an air ticket and flown along with it. ‘I’d always wanted to live in a village and long ago fell in love with cute old buildings,’ says Lorraine, arching an ironic eyebrow as the repilers batter away at the rotten timber beneath her feet, ‘but, one way and another, had lived all my life in Masterton. Then I began to think about moving the business - we didn’t have street frontage in Carterton amongst other things - and this building came up for sale. Suddenly in mid-November I’d bought a new shop, had a buyer for my house and sold my rental. I thought, “Holy Toledo, I’ve got some packing to do!”’ A frenzied three weeks of boxes and refurbishment followed and the new Hall shop opened its doors to the public on anniversary weekend, proving an immediate success. Despite the chaos and radical down sizing, living behind the shop is also turning out well for Lorraine. ‘It’s great, I love it - walking out the door and strolling to the shops, having a glass of wine in the evening with friends and walking home afterwards. It’s just as I’d imagined. Besides, with my son boarding I’d found myself working later and later and I was tired of using my car as an office. Here I can walk through a door and be at work, all I have to do is put some boundaries in place.’ The shop is fresh and full of light, with an enormous vase of Christmas Lillies wafting their scent throughout the room. whitewashed floor and pale walls complement the Scandinavian simplicity of the Hall clothing line, with its emphasis on cool greys, white and black, and draped shapes. Elk resin jewellery threads through the antlers arrayed along shelf-tops and a range of natural cosmetics and lotions sits beside the counter. Natural materials are a key element of Hall’s design ethos, another is providing clothing in an extensive range of sizes. The new shop also has the potential to extend the business in interesting directions. The courtyard area lends itself to possible events, including, in collaboration with a local travel agency, a ‘what to take and how to pack it’ evening. Lorraine has strong links with the local fashion community, both through her label and before that as a teacher and through her family’s fabric business, and is committed to her label being Wairarapa-made wherever possible. Hall may have flown south this summer but Lorraine Hall remains a local girl. See advertisement page 13.

booming Free Range Egg Industry
W
airarapa Eggs is the oldest and largest certified free range egg producer in the region and the owner and operator, Chris Martin is one of NZ’s youngest egg farmers. This year has been a bumper year for the company as free range products continue to escalate in popularity locally and nationally. The term ‘free range’ when applied to the egg industry are eggs produced from hens that are permitted to roam freely on a farm. The happy hens at Wairarapa Eggs spend their days exploring, foraging and dust bathing at their home on Upper Plain Rd on the outskirts of Masterton. Wairarapa Eggs were delighted to be recognised with a ‘Good Egg Award 2011’ by the SPCA and Compassion in World Farming to acknowledge businesses that support animal welfare. 8 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
Martin is a young Wairarapa entrepreneur and business owner. At only 26 years of age, he successfully juggles a family (including three young children) a staff of eight and 15 000 healthy hens. Martin also tries to deliver most of the eggs to his customers personally to keep his finger on the pulse. It was just last year that Chris Martin and his wife Alexandra officially purchased the family business from Alexandra’s father. A new injection of energy and marketing initiatives has seen the company’s profit and sales increase this year. Wairarapa Eggs certified free range eggs are now being sold in all the top restaurants, cafes, butcheries, delis and supermarkets in the Wairarapa and Wellington.
Martin’s priority is to ensure he has enough supply to service the locals that support him and also the charities he is so passionate about including free eggs to Bellyful - a charity that provides meals for families with newborn babies, and families who are struggling with illness. Martin is also focusing on initiatives in the New Year that will encourage local schools to promote the egg industry and more importantly teach children how eggs are produced and what a good healthy meal they make. Martinborough brews up new Craft Beer Festival
R
enowned for its Pinot Noir, the wine village of Martinborough will be introduced to a variety of new complex flavours this April thanks to the inaugural Martinborough BrewDay Festival. The event, to be held on Saturday, April 6th 2013 a short distance from Martinborough’s landmark town square, will bring together over 12 breweries from the greater Wellington region and see their beers matched with a large range of food. Event organiser Karen Aitken says along with the well known breweries like Tuatara, Garage Project, Parrot Dog, Yeastie Boys and Peak Brewery, many new breweries are set to showcase their wares. “A lot of beers, not previously released before, will enjoy their first outing at BrewDay and that’s really exciting,” she says. Karen says the idea for the BrewDay follows the Greater Wellington region’s growing reputation as the craft beer capital of New Zealand. “Wellington and the surrounding areas of Wairarapa and Kapiti are fast becoming known for their craft beer,” she says. “Locals seem keen to embrace the flavours and styles of craft beer and BrewDay is an extension of that allowing people to experience this on one site and in a beautiful, relaxing setting.” Pete Gillespie, co founder and brewer at Wellington based Garage Project www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz
which started brewing on a tiny kit in 2011 producing 24 different beers in 24 weeks, is excited to be bringing the label’s beers to Martinborough. “The Martinborough wineries were pioneers in helping educate people to better appreciate wine, and with the return of brewing to Wellington, we see the same thing happening now with beer,” he says. “All over the world people are discovering a greater appreciation for beers made with care and attention that are fuller in flavour and generally more fun than the bland mass produced offerings. The beers being produced locally are really starting to carve a strong reputation internationally. Our own brewery has seen beers distributed in Australia and even picked up an International Trophy at the Australian International Beer Awards last year. For a young brewery less than two years old, we’re pretty happy with that.” Pete says Garage Project will come to BrewDay with a selection of new beers that hopefully challenge perceived notions of what beer can be. hey will be joined by brewers and distillers including Parrot Dog, Fork and Brewer, Blackdog Brewery, Yeastie Boys, Funk Estate, Kereru Brewing (Wellington); Tuatara, Longbeach (Kapiti), Martinborough Brewery, 50 Knots, Regent 58 and Peak Brewery (Wairarapa). In addition Wairarapa based Crooked Cider,

ZUMWOHL, a German-style Schnapps made in New Zealand and Hardie Boys Ginger Beer will also be at Brew Day. Food will be provided by Wakelin House, Fork and Brewer, Peppers Parehua, Big Bad Wolf and Long Beach. “People love to come to the Wairarapa for the great weather in the autumn and to ensure they get there safely, we’ve teamed up with Tranzit to meet the train from Wellington and to offer a bus service from select locations,” says Karen. Uganda - a life changing experience Wairarapa photographer Geoff Walker captures the people of Uganda in a series of stunning portraits.
P
hotographer Geoff Walker spent just under a month in Uganda late last year with his main assignment to photograph 200 children starting nursery grade this year . The images have been used to seek sponsors, mainly from Europe, for the children. Taking photos in Northern Uganda was a real honour Geoff tells us as this region was subject to 20 years of rebellion and is just now starting to return to some normality. With little power, water from central bores and most living in mud huts, sufficient food is a major issue. However Ugandans value education and with a little help most children do attend school. The village of Rackoko in Pader District where Geoff stayed, has with help, built their own nursery, primary and secondary schools along with a vocational training centre and community health centre. Locals doing for themselves!!! To communicate around the district they built a community radio RapaFM, and Geoff is looking at linking RapaFM with local community radio Arrow FM. ou too could help these beautiful people, who in spite of all their troubles still have a very happy spirit, by sponsoring a child at school where they get uniforms, books, health care and a hot lunch. All of this is available for less than $10 per week, so just send Geoff an email for details. Watch for more developments as Geoff works to share our Wairarapa experience with the people of Pader District in Uganda. E: geoffwalkernz@gmail.com.

Meet the dynamic duo determined to keep the romance of wine alive. By Katie Farman
S
hayne and Poppy Hammond practise what they preach. They have a love of good wine. Good food and beautiful things. They have an affinity for the land and the rugged Wairarapa coastline. They also love Martinborough and its people. Luckily for visitors to the south Wairarapa township, this dynamic duo also has a desire to share their passions. After identifying a gap in the market, and with the financial backing of a board of like-minded people, Shayne and Poppy – previously the viticulturist and wine maker respectively for Dry River, created their own wine label Poppies Martinborough. They sell it exclusively from their beautiful new purpose built wine tasting and celebration premises on Puruatanga Road. The minimalist building has an industrial edge fringed with European influences. It features a tasting room with an open fireplace, an outside area to sit and admire the surrounding vineyards and rolling hills, a large function space that can sit up to 120 people and another furnished outdoor area with views to the north. Many of the fittings, including two grand chandeliers have been designed and made by Carterton based Brett Harman, while the subdued colour scheme provides a peaceful environment from which to taste the couple’s wines or one of their amazing platters. It’s been a labour of love and a dream for Poppy to see her “scrapbook of ideas” come to life. “Everyone loves the emotion and romanticism of wine and we think that proposition is even more powerful when the wine is served at home,” says Shayne. “Poppies is the home for our wine - we do not sell it anywhere else – so when people come here we want them to feel welcomed and be able to share a unique wine experience where good food is also on offer.” Poppies Martinborough’s inaugural vintage produced a Pinot Noir Rose – 90 percent of which has already sold; Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and a Late Harvest Riesling. Pinot Noir is currently in barrels and due for release later this year while there are plans to make Chardonnay, Riesling and wine from the half acre block of Tempranillo Grapes (from the Spanish region of Rioja) planted on site. “I love having a wine that displays total purity and that allows its varietal expressions to display those intricacies,” says Poppy, who has a reputation for making refined wines with more floral and 12 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
feminine characteristics. “We aim for consistency in everything we do. We talk and breathe wine and let the wines experience their full character. Over time it’s become instinctual and it’s akin to raising a child actually where we endorse their manners and morals.” Poppy’s foray into wine making came about by chance. After spending seven years working for AJ Hackett in Queenstown, she supplemented her income by working at the renown Chard Farm winery – an experience which not only piqued her interest in winemaking but made her realise she had a sophisticated palette. After completing a diploma from EIT, she headed south and was part of Lincoln University’s inaugural intake in its winemaking degree. She went to Dry River as part of her work experience component and was then offered a full time position as the assistant winemaker until 2003 at which point was appointed winemaker until 2012. n the other hand Shayne, who has a background in horticulture and is a trained chef, spent time tending the vines at Margrain and then moved on to take the role as Viticulturist for Dry River. Now he is excited about looking at the vines from the beautiful established blocks around the township and finding time to pursue his other love of surfing. The couple, who both grew up in Ohakune and rekindled their childhood romance after meeting at a friend’s wedding in 2000, have unbounded enthusiasm for what they do. They are excited about Poppies being a beautiful place for others’ celebrations and have already taken bookings for weddings and anniversaries for next summer, working alongside their preferred caterer Nick Arnold from Medici Café. They are also grateful for the support and enthusiasm they’ve received from the local community and fellow wineries, especially Coney Wines who allow the couple to make their wine there. “We borrowed picking bins; we borrowed tractors to get this thing up and running. The community spirit has been overwhelming and so supportive and that is really reassuring. I think Martinborough is too small to be negative and independent,” says Shayne. Just months after opening their doors the couple say they could’ve only dreamed of the start they’ve had with the positive feedback both humbling and privileged. Gypsy River Camping Katie Farman discovers there’s no tie dyed skirts or oversized hoop earrings to be found at Gypsy River Camping, a rather sophisticated camping package found on the outskirts of Masterton.
E
ven before we arrived at the newly established Gypsy River Camping, my seven year old spotted the flying fox, which stretched from one side of the paddock to the other. His excitement was contagious. So much so he completely overlooked three purposebuilt gypsy caravans – each brightly painted in bold colours and swathed in colourful bunting – nestled together to form their own charming camping area. They were to be our home for the next two nights after we were invited as guests by hosts Steve and Mary Blakemore who opened Gypsy River Camping, a unique Wairarapa camping experience tinged with a hint of luxury to run alongside their Mas des Saules B&B and Homestay located five minutes from the centre of Masterton. The exclusive campground is positioned in a sheltered area at the back of the couple’s property and a one minute walk to the beautiful Ruamahanga River. It also features a cookhouse, shower, barbecue, an outdoor “Bush Bath”, children’s play area, large tree swing and of course the magnificent flying fox, the latter which kept my three boys entertained for hours. The weekend we stayed came off the back of one of the hottest weeks of summer. Temperatures had soared into the 30s and the grass around the campsite had completely browned off. But once the sun had dropped and the children asleep in their bunks, furnished beautifully with Wallace Cotton bed linen, I had an opportunity to relish my surroundings. Even though it was 8.25pm the cicadas were chirping, the bird song still strong and sounds of nearby farm beasts drifted on the night breeze. It sounded wonderful and the perfect tonic to a busy week. The next morning we got up early and savoured the outdoor 14 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
activities on offer before it got too hot. The boys played swing ball and took turns on the swings and see-saw, before enjoying the thrilling big tree swing and flying fox. After lunch, Steve came down armed with life jackets, paddles and four sit-on kayaks that he set up on the river for us. Even though it was the first time my boys had been kayaking, they took to it naturally. We spent the afternoon paddling up and down the river that was punctuated with pockets of deeper water holes; swimming and searching for trout – the latter we spotted that night but unfortunately had no luck at reeling in. Even though there is no power at the site, there is a gas powered cooker and BBQ to sizzle a sausage on for dinner and we all enjoy a warm shower before heading to bed. ary greets us on Sunday morning with a wicker basket overflowing with breakfast goodies. Bacon, eggs, breakfast sausages, freshly baked muffins and croissants fuel us up for another morning of outdoor activities. The boys don’t get bored here and never once ask if there’s a TV or iPAD. I like that. In fact I think it’s marvellous. I also think it’s marvellous that this experience is so close to town and that the Blakemores provide all bedding, towels, camping needs, plus the food for your first supper and cooked breakfast – making it a simple and easy getaway for young families or groups of up to six adults. It’s these little touches, coupled with the well though out cook house and beautifully furnished and painted interiors created by the couple’s daughter Stella Lennox of Lennox Design Studio - that make Gyspy River Camping a truly unique experience. WINDGRASS WONDER In Featherston, a cluster of yellow rods reach for the endless sky, their slender ends capped with ochre. The new public sculpture is standing up to more than just the town’s notorious wind. By Julia Mahony.
T
he view from Penny Griffin’s desk at Featherston Library has brightened. Across the road the sculpture Windgrass, by Konstantin Dimopoulos, stands about eight metres high, the rods clicking a gentle song to passersby. The $40,000 public artwork was erected in December 2012 – the first of a number proposed for Wairarapa towns by the Aratoi Foundation, which commissioned and funded Windgrass. From the artist’s angle, Windgrass was designed to create shadows and patterns as it moves, its linear form representing the area’s bulrushes. At a community level, it has been affectionately likened to a bunch of spaghetti dipped in tomato sauce. ``That’s no more offensive than calling the Westpac Stadium the Cake Tin,’’ laughs Penny. So far, Windgrass is working with Featherston’s intense winds and is also standing up to some hands-on interaction. ``On its first night left unattended, some boys were caught trying to catapult themselves off the rods,’’ Penny says. ``When the artist was in town a few days later, he just laughed and said `it’ll be fine’.’’ Penny loves the sculpture. As Featherston’s librarian for 25 years, she can greet most adults and children by their first names and much feedback on Windgrass has been aired in the library, the town’s daytime hub. ``Any town that has some sort of sculpture in it shows people care about the town,’’ Penny says. ``I’ve seen people screech to a halt in their cars to have a look at Windgrass.’’ Penny’s tried to take a whimsical walk between the sculpture’s rods but it didn’t quite go to plan. Still, she admires the way the kinetic art uses Featherston’s wind, which is ``a blessing and a curse – it makes us feel alive.’’ She describes the Windgrass sound as soothing, nurturing and certainly not annoying. ``A stationary carving wouldn’t have reflected the town’s nature the same way Windgrass does,’’ she says. ``I think it represents our farming grasslands and hay making and is very aptly named, as it shows us which way the wind blows.’’ In the weeks after its installation, Windgrass was tested by gale force gusts along the main street but stood strong. Would-be vandals have also been deterred by vigilant officials. ``The kids have left it alone and we’re all just enjoying it,’’ Penny says. Dimopoulos, an Egyptian-born Greek who grew up in Wellington and is now Australia-based, designed Windgrass around his memories and visits to South Wairarapa. More of his signature linear sculptures in bright colours and moved by wind stand in Wellington, Palmerston North, Waiheke Island, Gisborne, Auckland, the USA and Australia. Dimopoulos spent hours sitting in Featherston Library watching the movement of the trees across the road, deciding how to angle Windgrass. Real grasses have been planted at the base of the sculpture, which is made of highly durable composite material embedded into in-ground tubes. At night, with four uplights, the sculpture becomes an elongated golden crown. Firmly in place, the vertical eye-catcher can be left to gracefully stretch and sway into the Wairarapa blue. 16 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29

Screenprinted Iconography
Screen printing and design duo Mike and Lindie Sleyer took a calculated leap into the unknown when they gave up their Wellington lives to move to Martinborough Tina Finn
and launch their very own design brand, Dustys&Lulu. By Tina Finn.
D
ustys&Lulu’s light-filled Martinborough studio is a perfect reflection of the company’s graphic sensibilities. The super sleek Macs sitting side-by-side on a desk with a view to the garden beyond, the skull and bright pink crossbones chalked on the wall, cartoon size light bulbs with flexes strung like vines above a workbench and a towering stack of pizza boxes screen-printed with distinctive Dustys&Lulu images, all containing t-shirts destined for the Martinborough fair. Then there’s the wall-long bookshelf, divided into his and her sections, one part beautifully colour themed, the other roof-high and haphazard. The linking device is a shelf of gonzo pop collectibles including everybody’s favourite, Mr Potato Head, looking right at home next to a rubber duck and gun-toting gorillaz toy. Altogether it’s a fun fusion of designer style and comic-book whackiness. Welcome to Dustys&Lulu land; their motto - making life pretty. Dustys&Lulu is the alter-ego (and nicknames) of real life couple Lindie and Mike Sleyer. Originally workmates at a Wellington design agency where Lindie had hired Mike via skype interview while he was London based. Friends first, they joined forces romantically and professionally before moving to the Wairarapa and starting their own business. ‘We’d always loved Martinborough, we were married here and were always looking at property online,’ explains Lindie, ‘and then, when we saw this place, we just thought, let’s go for it. Let’s grow some big balls and make the move.’ That was two years ago and, while Mike might have had anxious moments, Lindie, a firm believer in the policy that if you give your all to something things will work out alright, never did. ‘She’s such an optimist,’ Mike says fondly and Lindie laughs. With a handful of loyal clients as cushion, they’ve grown the Dustys&Lulu brand to the point where clients now come to them. ‘And they’re so lovely,’ exclaims Lindie. ‘They’re often the owners of their businesses and open to letting us run with an idea, which is great.’ 18 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
While standard assignments such as financial reports are still the mainstay of the business, Dustys&Lulu are becoming increasingly known for their distinctive screenprinted iconography, seen on clothing and homewares such as teatowels and pillowcases. Online retailing websites such as Etsy and clever bastards are also proving to be great sales points for their wares. ‘It’s brilliant,’ says Lindie. ‘We take our parcels and off they fly to Brazil or America, all from our tiny Post Office cum pharmacy.’ ike and Lindie have also thrown themselves into the local community. Mike joined the local rugby club and both signed up to the Martinborough Business Association, moving straight onto the committee and giving the association a rebrand. The local rag, the Martinborough Star has also benefitted from their presence with a successful redesign. ‘We like to put back into the community,’ says the couple. ‘A lot of design is about passion, passion and inspiration, and taking part in your community involves both of those things.’

The right house at the right time Visitors from the northern hemisphere have long been astonished at the cold and draughty houses we Kiwis endure during the winter months. Thankfully the ‘central heating is for wimps’ attitude is on the way out and, with the aid of businesses such as Righthouse, warm winter homes are on the way in. By Tina Finn. t seems fitting that Nick Fairclough, regional representative for home energy efficiency company, Righthouse, is knee-deep in the purchase of his own house when I visit. While he finishes a call I conjure visions of his new family home as the best heated, most draught resistant and energy efficient dwelling in the entire Wairarapa. It might be true. Once free, we get chatting about different forms of underfloor insulation. Nick declares that foil – that longstanding favourite of the New Zealand home builder – is ‘next to useless’ and dashes off to a back room, returning with two product samples, one like the inside of a puffa jacket and another that could be labelled ‘hair of yak’. It has the rather lovely name of Earthwool and is the product he used to line the underside of the house we’re sitting in, ripping out the builder’s foil beforehand of course. “So you own this house?” “Oh no, we’ve been renting since we moved to the Wairarapa 18 months ago.” “You insulated a rental?” “It’s important to stay warm.” Quite so. Righthouse concerns itself with heating systems, photo-voltaic (pv) solar energy and insulation. Under the auspices of manager Neil Morton, the company is on a mission to make New Zealand houses warmer and healthier. This goal has a quantifiable economic benefit – according to one equation, for every dollar spent, $4.50 is returned to government coffers - healthier homes equals less doctor’s bills, less employee absences and a more resilient population. Solar energy is a growth industry in the Wairarapa and much of Nick’s time is spent on rooftops across the valley. Just as important as roof size and aspect is a thorough understanding of the homeowner’s lifestyle. “It’s very important to get a good picture of people’s lives before making recommendations to suit their needs,” he says. “There are so many variables; a couple who commute weekly will have hugely different energy and heating requirements to those who have young children or work from home.” As well as designing and installing a system or combination of systems for the client, be it solar, heat pump, radiator or underfloor, Righthouse offer financing packages, including a ratepayers option. The EKA government scheme also makes energy options more affordable. ick knows something of real cold, having lived in his wife’s country, Poland, for a time. Originally from Eastbourne, he met Danuta, a social worker, in Scotland and they married in her hometown of Myslenice, 45 minutes south of Krakow. They had 30 guests from New Zealand attend - quite an influx of Kiwis for a town of 3,000 people. Their son was born there and Nick taught adult-education English, which seems to have involved an element of

standup - Nick telling tall tales in limited Polish while the students fell about as he butchered their language. He is now justifiably proud of speaking the language well enough to hold skype conversations with his father-in-law. Back in New Zealand Nick and Danuta spent many weekends visiting the Wairarapa and dreamed of one day having a home there, and now at last they have. In fact, says a beaming Nick, “It’s unconditional.” Righthouse Energy Assessment is an essential energy ‘check-up’ for your home – it helps you pinpoint exactly where your home is losing heat or wasting energy, so they can recommend the right solutions. It makes sure the money you invest into energy-efficiency measures is spent on the right things. The process involves a Righthouse assessor visiting your home to review its energy performance, using the latest information and technology to identify concerns, such as: • Inadequate, moisture-damaged or badly installed insulation • Windows that could benefit from double glazing • Draughts and gaps where heat loss is occuring • Inefficient water heating systems that cost too much to run • Incorrect water temperatures and flow • Inefficient lighting • Heating systems that aren’t the most effective type for your home Depending on the particular Energy Assessment being performed Righthouse will provide a report outlining ways to improve the home’s energy performance, in order of priority. Each recommendation is costed and a cost benefit analysis undertaken for you to enable to make an informed decision. They can also perform a HERS assessment, the Governmentapproved measure of a home’s energy-efficiency performance. See advertisement page 2.

The magic of Mangatarere The foothills of the Tararua ranges are riddled with bush-clad paths, mysterious river valleys, cool trails and paths that are perfectly designed for mini explorations on a hot summer’s day. By Tina Finn.

e’re going on a bushwalk. Susie Shaw, a lissome and capable woman who lives in a stone house far up the Mangatarere Valley, is showing us one of the many trails that thread through the hills around her home. The Shaw family owns the French Village and Susie is proprietor of the French Village Lodge, a two-storey wooden chalet perched high above the Mangatarere River with views over meadows and bushclad valley, and which sleeps up to 14 people in splendid comfort. Forty minutes west of Carterton, the French Village is known to locals as an ambitious folly created almost single-handedly by a Wellington man late last century in the style of a European stone village. He died before his dream of towers, roads and squares was fully realised but enough buildings and French iconography exist, including the Shaw family’s home, to show his remarkable ambition. Farewelling her downcast dogs, Susie leads us to where the Carrington and Mangatarere streams meet. The water smells like new rain; it’s cool and clean but brown as a hairdresser’s basin, stained with tannin from the manuka and kanuka trees that grow along the banks. When the Shaws had beehives Susie would often

find hundreds of bees dozing on the rocks beside the stream, the heated air pulsating as they hummed. It is a tempting spot to sunbathe but instead we push on into the undergrowth. The grasses are shoulder high and studded with wildflowers. Signs of colonial attempts to tame the landscape crop up regularly. We pass a concrete fencepost wrapped in corroded barbed wire that must have taken Popeye muscles to haul into place; further along there’s signs of an old bullock track, now thick with Lancewood and ferns. The native foliage thrives in the warm, damp valleys and Susie has her work cut out keeping a path cleared. “I come along about once a month,” she says, forcing her way 22 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
through a stretch of pigfern. “This is definitely the worst.” She waves her stick at a bank of glossy green mountain fern. “It grows back in a second.” We are serenaded by cicadas and the calls of tui and bellbirds as we follow the river upstream into the hills. The water is a constant companion as we walk, chuckling and whispering, sliding over rocks, weaving around enormous lichen covered boulders. Intermittently a deep pool forms, dark and mysterious. The 11 year old finds the lure of the water irresistible. She begins by paddling but eventually collapses into the liquid depths, clothes and all. “It’s warm!” she declares. Three hours or so steadily climbing this path would link you with the Holdsworth track - a highway compared with our trail. We plow through head high toe toe, scramble over ancient tree roots and squelch through slime. Mud oozes between our toes and smells of rich earth and leaf hummus. We walk further than we’d intended, seduced by the stillness, the birdsong and the beauty of the bush. On a day when the temperature gauge is climbing above 30 on the plain this undersea world of punga and beech is cool and tranquil. It’s only when the track opens onto a sparkling glade that we see the sun is high in the sky and decide to turn back, not having brought a picnic. Next time, we say. Next time we’ll come all day. See advertisement page 47.

Art as Therapy Anne Taylor explores her inner self with Janie Nott’s art therapy session
he canvas is washed with layers of blue. It’s a moonlit scene and a dove is finding its way back home; following the light of a lantern that sits on top of a delicate one-roomed houseboat,on a calm azure sea. I’m looking at one of Janie Nott’s paintings on her art therapy blog which highlights paintings and drawings done by her clients during art therapy sessions, and some of her own, which she has been exhibiting throughout New Zealand for eight years. Underneath the image, she has written: “Art Therapy is like the dove that leads us to the light within our gentle self. Sometimes life makes it too noisy for us to hear what is right for us. The creating takes us back to our answers and our wisdom that have been waiting for us to hear.” It is as good a description of art therapy as any I have read, and it rings true of my experience with Janie, a Greytown artist and art therapist who offered me a session recently as a way of understanding what she does. There are many definitions and variations of art therapy, a form of psychotherapy that first started to be used in the 1950s. It has been used to help people with a wide range of physical, mental and emotional issues. At its core is the belief that artistic expression is itself healing and life-enhancing and with guidance from a trained art therapist, a person can gain clarity about themselves, others and their life situation; cope better with physical symptoms; and let go of grief, anger or frustration that may be holding them back. Art therapists believe we have the answers to our unique issues, and by drawing and painting they can be revealed to us, along with some solutions. “Art brings out unconscious material that is then shared and processed,” says Janie. “I’ve seen people paint themselves out of depression with not a lot of discussion, and I’ve worked with children who have been stuck and isolated in family situations and through writing and drawing have found a sense of themselves.” Janie did a law degree in Wellington, then “escaped” overseas on a journey that took her to Asia, northern India, and cities in the United States. She gained her postgraduate degree in art therapy in Vancouver, Canada, where she also met partner Richard Hassall, an artisan jeweller. They moved to Wairarapa in the late 1990s and have three children. A year ago they bought The Village Art Shop in Greytown which has become a hub for art classes, children’s workshops and local creativity. As one of around eight art therapists in the Wellington region, Janie works with people of all ages, many of whom are dealing with life’s most challenging situations, from divorce and family conflict, to living with cancer, addiction, and bereavement. She also sees those who are using art therapy as a tool for self development and well being, and she runs workshops for health professionals. On the day of my session, I headed down the winding path behind her home, past an orchard of magnolia trees, and up the steps of the purpose built studio she uses. Inside, there are flowers are on the table, and sunlight is filtering in from the garden catching gilt frames and artwork on the warm yellow walls. Coloured pencils, pastels and watercolour paints are laid out invitingly, alongside generous stacks of white paper. This is a judgement free zone; there’s never any competition over who does the best drawings and many 24 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29

stick figures have roamed within these walls. In fact, any way you want to express yourself with these raw materials is perfectly OK. We start chatting and Janie takes her cue from something I say about being wanting to be on a different “track” to what I’m currently on. She picks up on this word and asks me to explore it with the materials. Without really thinking, I start painting a rigid, relentless grey train track of parallel lines heading into the distance. Hey, maybe this image is telling me something!? anie says she listens carefully for any visual or symbolic language clients’ use - my ‘track’ is one example - and works with that: “The idea is that we all had a symbolic language long before speech - that’s how people originally communicated. That’s why art therapy is so great for children because they can often draw out things that are happening in their family which they wouldn’t be able to describe in words.” As we go deeper into the ‘track’ idea, Janie poses more questions that seemed unusual, reminding me a bit of Zen poetry. As usual, my analytical brain swings into action, trying to reason my way to an answer. But I’m reminded to slow down and let the answers come from a deeper, quieter place. She suggests I paint what my ideal track would look like and how I would look on it, letting images come up freely. It’s as if I have a camera and I am moving from a wide angle view to a close up. I feel like I have left standard time and the world behind. At the end of the session, I feel I’m slowly and a bit reluctantly surfacing to the ‘real’ world. Of the four or so pictures I did, one in particular has become a kind of touchstone which I keep on my wall. It’s of a figure walking along a gently curving path beside a river in a colourful landscape. What I take from this is similar to many things you can read in self help books: something along the lines of taking time to ‘smell the roses’. But it’s quite different and much more powerful having a visual image that I made myself. Of all the possible images that could have come up, this is what came out that day: a ‘note to self’, from myself, one that arrived seemingly of its own accord during a peaceful hour of art therapy.

A painting for the neighbors In his “Moon over Martinborough’ blog, Jared Gulian tells stories about living a deeply satisfying life in Martinborough, one of the world’s most beautiful places. www.moonovermartinborough.comu
W
hen our neighbors John and Aussie Bronwyn announced that they were selling their property and moving away, Rick and I were mortified. How could they abandon us? More than anyone, those two have taught us how to live on 20 acres. Aussie Bronwyn is our High Priestess of Chicken Wisdom. John lets Rick borrow and break his tractor on a regular basis. And every Tuesday we spend wild evenings with them – playing cards, accusing each other of cheating, and heading home to bed by 8:30pm. But for some strange reason, they wanted to be closer to their grandchildren. Go figure. And their large rural property had become too much work. So they wanted to move to Hastings for a quiet retirement with a small garden near family. Rick and I, being the generous souls we are, eventually found it in our hearts to forgive them for this unthinkable betrayal. We did, however, threaten to have a big red phone with a direct line installed into their new house so we could call them in emergencies – like when we had a broody hen, or when one of the pigs was sick. Then Aussie Bronwyn asked us a favor. “Will you look after our elderly cow?” Everyone knows that Rick and I are suckers for geriatric farm animals. Of course we said yes. The cow’s name is Blossom, and she supplied the cream for the countless homemade scones with homemade strawberry jam that Rick and I have enjoyed over at Aussie Bronwyn and Johns’ place. Blossom is no longer producing milk, but when she was, she never let men milk her. That’s why I call her Blossom the Man-Hating Cow. She is aloof and eccentric. Her face is oddly crooked. If you’re not Aussie Bronwyn then she prefers you to keep your distance, thankyouverymuch. If you get too close, she hides by looking away. She seems to think that if she can’t see you, you can’t see her. This might make some sense, except for the fact that she’s a sizable cow and she’s standing right in front of you. But, never mind. Aussie Bronwyn is very fond of Blossom. She hand-raised that cow from a small calf and has dutifully looked after her for the last 16 years. But there’s no room for a geriatric cow in a small, suburban garden. So Blossom the Man-Hating Cow is going to live out her final days grazing peacefully in paddocks that belong to two men. Fate, it seems, has a sense of humor. Before we knew it, John and Aussie Bronwyn had emptied their house and left Martinborough. Rick and I were so bereft that we practically started wearing black armbands. Not only did we miss their company, but we had come to rely on them for so much that we figured we’d be dead in a week. About this time I got an email from Anne Taylor, an artist in nearby Greytown. She wanted to know if I was interested in having a portrait done of one of our animals as a portfolio piece. I thought of Blossom, and I said yes. I wanted to thank Aussie Bronwyn and John for all the invaluable help they’d given us over the past siz years. Anne came over, and we shared a cup of tea. She asked all about John and Aussie Bronwyn. She wanted to know what kind of art they liked. Bold and expressive? Or subtle and low key? I talked about the surreal Dali prints in their house, John’s wildlife paintings, and Bronwyn’s love of flowers and floral art. Next Anne asked all about Blossom, her life, and her personality. 26 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN 2013 Issue #29
I then took Anne down to the bottom paddock where Blossom was grazing. Anne took photo after photo and laid out a blanket near Blossom to watch her. Anne truly wanted to capture the spirit of the old girl. few weeks later, Anne sent some sketches of different layouts, and I picked the one I liked most. A month or so after that, I got a call that the painting was ready. I met Anne at Cahoots, a nice little café in Greytown, and she gave me the painting. It was fantastic. Anne had wanted the painting to tell a story, and it did. There was a small image of Aussie Bronwyn bottle-feeding a calf, and Blossom with her aged, crooked face looked out at me. There were blossoms in one corner for the cow’s name, and flowers in front for Aussie Bronwyn’s love of floral art. It was a moonlit scene as a nod to the Moon over Martinborough project. The hills in the background were the hills we see from our paddocks here, where Blossom now grazes. It was the perfect thank you for John and Aussie Bronwyn. Shortly after I got the painting, Rick and I went to Hastings for the weekend to stay with them at their new place. We had nothing special planned – just meals together, a visit to a café, cards in the evening, accusations of cheating, and an early bedtime. It was fantastic. We gave them the painting of Blossom, and John hung it on the wall in the lounge faster than you could say, “We love it.” “It’s to thank you for all your help over the years,” I said. “It’s beautiful,” Aussie Bronwyn said. “It sums up our time in Martinborough – from hand rearing Blossom to her retirement in your paddocks.” When we left that weekend, we gave them both big hugs. It was so good to see them. We really do miss them, and not just because we’re inept and need help. We really like those two. We talked about having them down for a visit, and that’s when I realised another nice thing about good neighbours. Of course things change. Your neighbours help you, you help them in return, and eventually someone moves on. Yet good neighbours, really good neighbours, transcend time and place. Naturally they stop being neighbours when they move away. But if you stay in touch, good neighbours really can become good friends. Visit www.annetaylorart.webs.com.

Calma Therapies - Jo Bentley Calma therapies is an established boutique clinic offering award winning hair and make-up, holistic beauty and complementary therapies just off the busy main road in Greytown. Owner, Jo Bentley has a variety of skills, awards and diplomas to her name but more importantly she has a passion for helping people look and feel fantastic. Specialising in wedding make-up and hair, Jo’s warm, calming nature puts brides at ease while listening to their ideas and styling requirements. “Most brides like to have a trial so that they can see their overall vision for their big day. I offer a refresher facial‚ and full prime and colour selection at the trial as well as hair styling as it would be done on the day.” Longevity is important for make-up (12+ hours) while hair can incorporate fixed styling or transitional styling, a form of progressive styling that changes through the day. Jo describes herself as a visionary when it comes to styling and selecting the right colours. “I have always been able to see the finished styling before I’ve started which is very helpful when consulting with individuals.” As a hairdresser colour correction, colour therapy or colour consulting was always part of the training. It’s the same for make-up application, correct colour selection, will produce a fresh, beautiful sparkle to the eyes regardless of a natural or smoky effect. It’s all about balance with colour,” said Jo. With an international, national and local following, Jo comes highly recommended by clients with many thank you cards and testimonials displayed for people to read in her clinic.

ACTUAL VISION “When families come together by marriage there is an important opportunity to record not only the wedding event but to fashion a precious heirloom, created today to treasure tomorrow, the perfect present for the future,” says Deane Cronin from Actual Vision. “Family Stories are key to knowing about your past and stories as told by those who attend the wedding, old and young, in their own words, give your film that special feeling,” he says. “It becomes a valuable ‘family heirloom’ with a difference. Planning is essential to you having the choice to tell your story, with the uncut material or Deane can edit this into a highlights package, tailored to suit your theme, your plan and values. Deane will help you share your precious moments on the internet, on a DVD or HD media file, and photo prints from frames of the film. Here’s Gaye’s explanation of what CANZ is and why it is so important to her. “I am so very proud to have been a 1999 Foundation Member of CANZ. But I thought I’d Google it just to make sure there’s some accurate information up there for anyone wanting a special ceremony of some sort.” First up came the Christian Accommodation NZ link. Ok, good to know, then came the Corrections Assn of NZ, followed by the Composers of NZ, and also Computer Access. The Good, the Bad, the Musical and the Nerds maybe? Then I noticed the CANZ Astoria New York USA, who apparently have a huge selection of much appreciated beers. Wonder if they stock TUI? And then - yes, I found CANZ the Celebrants’ Association of NZ. So, if you want to know more about Gaye, or CANZ I suggest you type in - either Celebrants’ Association of NZ or Gaye Gough Marriage and Civil Union Celebrant‚ and see what comes up! It’s all there! Taste of Autumn - a Dining Guide
Wairarapa chefs are reflecting the colours and fruits of autumn in their tables and plates, as the shimmering season rolls around once more. Dress in layers and sit outside to watch leaves fall from Greytown’s spectacular trees, dine while gazing across Martinborough’s square, nestle into a new cafe in Masterton, sip a coffee in Carterton, or eat and take a stroll down Featherston’s main road. Autumn gives us the choice of cosy indoor tables, or a few more weeks of glorious outdoor dining. As always, the choice of dining and function venues in the Wairarapa ranges from small and intimate to grand and luxurious. Bon appetit!
Located in a prominent position at the north end of Masterton, the Horseshoe Restaurant is an easy place to find. The stylish refurbishment of the Horseshoe Café, Restaurant and bar has turned this 1950s Art Deco Masterton landmark into one of the Wairarapas’ busiest dining venues. The recently launched summer menu is a real hit and ticks all the boxes. With fantastic new items such as their custom made hanging skewers, gourmet sandwiches in a box or their popular chowder or roasts – there is something for everyone! The children are not forgotten either, with an excellent children’s
menu filled with fresh food options and kids sundaes are a firm favourite!!Their popular 2-4-1 meal deal on Tuesdays is staying for the autumn season but booking is strongly advised! If you’re after a more relaxed venue, there is a shearing themed bar with a pool table, Tab and gaming available adjacent to the restaurant. The Horseshoe is a bar as well as restaurant with a lovely range of house wines including a good selection from local vineyards, a fantastic cocktail list, coffees and specialist teas. The Horseshoe has disabled facilities, free wifi for dining guests and air conditioning; see their web site for more information and a full version of their menu. www.thehorseshoe.co.nz Ph: 06 3771102

“At times it sees that the search for good health has taken all the pleasure out of life. It has stripped us of butter, cream, marbled red meat, pork, and goose fat. And just when you settle on your favorite healthful fish, you’re told it’s laced with mercury. But then, miraculously, there is olive oil. Olive oil, it seems, is the only really good food we are still allowed.” - Mark Kurlansky from “Essential Oil,” Bon Appétit, November 2008
Out front by a nose. It ’s our belief, that like fine wine, a great olive oil should have a superb nose. The aroma should lead the palate and round out the flavour, heightening the senses. So whether you ’re drizzling our rich and creamy Ex tra Virgin, or da shing out one of our zes ty Infused range, we’re sure you ’ll be led to new places.

Cope of Many Colours A Masterton priest found herself in a creative race against time to make a garment fit for a dean. By Julia Mahony.
Julia Mahony
A
mong her many talents, the Reverend Liz Greville is handy with the sewing machine but running up a church vestment for the Anglican Dean of Auckland came with hurdles. Instead of the usual year she takes to design and make a cope – a long open-fronted mantle or cloak - Liz was given just eight weeks, before a visit to New Zealand by the Archbishop of Canterbury. She had to find an eye-catching, durable fabric and make a resplendent cope and matching stole decorated with embroidery. There was a reason for the short notice. ChristChurch Cathedral’s artist-in-residence, Sue Spigel, had begun a garment for the dean months earlier but the February 22, 2011 earthquake left her injured in the cathedral’s ruins and her unfinished cope was lost. Liz accepted the challenge to take over and spent three days in Auckland, researching the dean’s role. She took about 30 fabric samples into the Holy Trinity Cathedral but many appeared grey in the light. One fabric by Osborne and Little stood out – brick red with koru-like shapes, palms and other patterns, together representative of the three tikanga (style) of Maori, Pakeha and Pasifika. “We ordered seven metres, I got to the airport to go home and received a text from the supplier saying they had only 2.7 metres and the line was discontinued,’’ Liz told Wairarapa Lifestyle.
The stole to match the Auckland vestment is embellished with an outline of Rangitoto Island, waves, One Tree Hill, waka, yachts and elements of the cathedral and its stained glass windows. Time was running out and Liz was already busy making a red and black cope for the new Bishop of Wellington, Justin Duckworth. She fired emails around the world and was rewarded when 40 metres was returned to London by a customer and seven of those were flown to New Zealand. So how did she make the Auckland cope one-size-fits-all? Jo Kelly-Moore is the Anglican Church’s first woman Dean of Auckland but the cope must also fit future holders of the post. Instead of reflecting the personal theology of a bishop, a dean’s cope should tell the story of the place they serve. “I solved the variations of height problem in the middle of the night,’’ says Liz. “I made an extra base which can be stitched around the bottom of the cope and make it long enough for someone six feet tall.’’ The stole to match the Auckland vestment is embellished with an outline of Rangitoto Island, waves, One Tree Hill, waka, yachts and elements of the cathedral and its stained glass windows. The garment was finished in time and sent by courier as a ‘wedding dress’ to Auckland – a heart stopping time for Liz. Her first cope was for former Bishop of Auckland, John Paterson, after she said at his ordination she’d never seen such “a tatty looking lot of bishops’’. She designed a reversible cope with two mitres “two outfits for the price of one’’. www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz

L
iz has attended ordination services at which half a dozen of her vestments have walked up the aisle. Art has always been a part of her life and she cannot remember learning to embroider. “I’ve just always done it. My mother was a botanical artist and embroiderer, so that gene is a strong one.’’ In Masterton, Liz presides over services at St Andrew’s in the Paddock at Fernridge. She has been involved in many community projects since arriving in the town in 1980 with her husband, dentist Paddy Greville, and is now part of the richly woven fabric of Wairarapa’s community.
