English is spoken in every part of the globe. We can find many different ways of speaking English. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland all have their distinctive pronunciation and expressions. American English differs from British English in pronunciation, spelling and meaning of some words. In the USA, American English spoken on the east coast has a different pronunciation than American English spoken on the west coast.

In Oceania you can find Australian English, Aboriginal English, New Zealand English, Maori English. In East Asia you can find Hong Kong English, Singapore English, Malaysian English. But how can it be that speakers of “Maori English” understand speakers of “Singapore English”? The answer is that when people from different countries talk to each other they use the same basic language. We can say they use “World English”.

5 Read the passage. Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are in the magic world of Narnia. They entered Narnia through an old wardrobe in their aunt and uncle’s house. In Narnia animals can talk and children live many adventures. Children are talking to Mr. and Mrs. Beaver about their friend Mr. Tumnus, who is a prisoner of the White Queen. It is the first time children hear the name Aslan. “Aslan?” said Mr. Beaver. “Why, don’t you know? He’s the King. He’s the Lord of the whole wood, but not often here, you understand. Never in my time or my father’s time. But the word has reached us that he has come back. He is in Narnia at this moment. He’ll settle the White Queen all right. It is he, not you, that will save Mr. Tumnus.” “Is... is he a man?” asked Lucy. “Aslan a man!” Mr. Beaver said sternly, “Certainly not! I tell you he is the King of the wood and the son of the great Emperor-Beyond-the-Sea. Don’t you know who is the King of Beasts? Aslan is a lion-the Lion, the great Lion.” “Ooh!” said Susan, “I thought he was a man. Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion.” “That you will, dearie and no mistake,” said Mrs. Beaver, “if there’s anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they’re either braver than most or else just silly.” The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. English

In love with Shakespeare Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen! My name is William Shakespeare and they say I’m the most important English poet and playwright of all time. But no matter what they say, I’d like to tell you something about myself (after all, telling stories is my job!). I was born in Stratford upon Avon – which is a river – in 1564. My wife’s name is Anne Hathaway... but she isn’t an actress. We have 3 children. I am an actor and I write successful plays, too. I’m so famous that everybody comes to see my company and me, even Queen Elizabeth I. My 37 plays can be roughly divided into histories, comedies and tragedies. The tragedies are considered my masterpieces. Perhaps you’ve seen some of them in movies, like “Romeo and Juliet” or “Hamlet”. Do you remember Hamlet - the sad prince with the skull? Why am I considered a genius? Well, maybe because I know the taste of my time and I use poetry to represent the universal experiences of human life: love, hate, friendship, jealousy and death. I write sonnets, too. My job gives me financial prosperity, so I’m one of the partners in the building of the Globe Theatre, the octagonal building with the thatched roof on the south bank of the Thames, where we work. We perform my plays there: “Richard III”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, “The Tempest” and “Macbeth”, to name but a few. So, if you get a chance, come to the Globe and watch a play!

4 Read the text and answer the questions. Shakespeare’s fame reached the movies a long time ago. The story of Hamlet became a film in 1920! A lot of adaptations and films are based on Shakespeare’s plays or his life; here are some popular examples. In 1996 Romeo+Juliet came out and immediately became a cult movie among teenagers, together with its soundtrack. The film is set in the imaginary city of Verona Beach in California, with a young Leonardo di Caprio playing Romeo. The movie Shakespeare in Love, released in 1998 and directed by John Madden, is a romantic comedy set in London in the late 16th century. This is the story: the young Shakespeare is short of cash and needs inspiration; then he meets his ideal woman, Lady Viola (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays. As for Hamlet, this is Shakespeare’s most adapted play: more than 50 films have been inspired by this tragedy! 1. When did Hamlet become a film for the first time? 2. Where is Romeo + Juliet set? 3. Who plays Romeo in the film? 4. Where and when is Shakespeare in Love set? 5. What is Shakespare’s most adapted play?

Writing a book review

HOT ISSUE

1 Read this introduction about how to write a book review.

A book review is a critical appraisal of a book, a film or a play. At school, you may be asked to read a book and write its review giving your opinion about it. So, where should you start from? Here are some tips. First of all, don’t forget to jot down some notes while you read the book. Then, start writing your review, including and developing the following points: title of the book, name of the author, genre of the book (fantasy, science fiction, etc.), setting (where and when the story takes place), plot (the story of the book), main characters (the most important people represented in the story), personal opinion about the book and reasons for reading it. And, last but not least, do not reveal anything about the ending!

2 Read the text and underline the different parts according to the colour keys:

Harry Potter is a book by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter thinks he is a normal boy. Unfortunately, he lives with his hot-tempered Uncle Vernon, his nosy Aunt Petunia and his bullying cousin, Dudley, who all make Harry’s life miserable. Living in a stuffy old cupboard under the stairs is just one of the reasons why Harry hates living with the Dursleys! Some unusual letters start arriving for Harry; this confuses and irritates Uncle Vernon so he takes the family somewhere where he thinks no one will find him but he was greatly mistaken. A giant-sized man with beetle black eyes goes and tell Harry some very astonishing news: Harry is a wizard! Soon, Harry has lots of adventures in his new wizarding school, Hogwarts, but not all is fun and games. Someone is planning to steal a special object being hidden in Hogwarts… but who is it? I love this book so much because when you are reading it, you feel like you are inside the book. I feel like I am actually in Hogwarts, watching the ghosts and duelling enemies. This amazing book is exciting, fun and hard to stop reading! I think children should read this book when they are 7 or over because it has some hard words in it and some bits are slightly complicated.

TOWARDS THE

INVALSI TEST

Charles Dickens, a Victorian celebrity 1 Read.

1. AN INTRODUCTION TO DICKENS

Dickens’ novels describe the society of his time and in particular the enormous differences that existed between the lives of rich people and the lives of poor people. The rich are often portrayed as proud and ridiculous, while the poor are humble, kind and heroic. His works are still incredibly popular today: many have been made into films, musicals, TV series and plays and of course millions of people read and re-read his novels.

2. A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

The most popular of all English novelists, Charles Dickens was born in Portsea, in 1812, and died in 1870. Dickens was born into a poor family. When he was 12 his father was put in prison for debt. Dickens couldn’t continue at school as the family had no money, so he went to work in a factory. It was hot, dirty and dangerous work, and young Charles hated it. Dickens worked in the factory for only six months but the effect of this experience stayed with him all his life. At the age of 15 he went to work as a clerk in a lawyer’s office and he later became a court reporter. Many people read Dickens’ articles and liked them, so he decided to try and write his first book. In that period it was normal for books to be published, chapter by chapter, in monthly magazines. Dickens’ first book, “Oliver Twist”, was published between 1837 and 1839. It was a huge success. Dickens left his job and became a professional writer. He started his own magazine and began publishing his stories. Among Dickens’ most popular novels are: “A Christmas Carol”, “Hard Times”, “Nicholas Nickleby”, “A Tale of Two Cities”, “The Old Curiosity Shop” and “David Copperfield”.

3. CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY

Dickens was a man of great energy but he was also impatient and quick to take offence. He became incredibly rich but was not very generous. He toured the country reading extracts from his books and thousands of people came to see him, as he was a fine orator.

4. CONCLUSION

Dickens is remembered as a writer of long and complex novels with hundreds of marvellous characters, funny and satirical on the one hand, but passionate and critical on the other.
