Dick Whittington lives in a village far from London. He is very poor.
2
One day he hears people say, “The streets of London are paved with gold. There is opportunity for everybody!”
“I must go to London and find a job to earn some money!” he thinks.
3
After a very long and difficult journey, he arrives in London. But the streets are not paved with gold. There are many people, but they do not seem rich or happy!
4
Dick is tired, he sits down to rest on the steps of a fine house.
5
A merchant and his beautiful daughter Alice live in that house. “What’s the matter?” asks the merchant and Dick tells him his story.
6
“Give Dick some work here in my kitchen!” says the merchant to his cook. But the cook is a cross, unkind woman and treats Dick badly. “Hurry up! Don’t be lazy!” she shouts.
7
It is also difficult for him to sleep at night because his attic room is full of rats! After a week Dick says: “That’s enough! I will return to my village.”
