architecture of boundaries: deconstructing the sacred

A2

PRATT

The Eastern Wall of Jerusalem, along with the Jehosaphat Valley, serve as the ultimate barrier between the West and the East. The known and the unknown layers surrounding the temple mount contain the historical events and artifacts of over thousands of years. The rock inside the dome serves as a critical focal point of tension due to its indescribable significance to all major religions. The architecture proposes a public passage within, across and along this boundary. By materializing the wall and creating carefully framed openings, this highly restricted zone is reclaimed by the public in all its glory. The passage starts off at Solomon’s underground stables to the South, continues on a highline with framed views of the glorious Al-Aqsa and dome of the rock plazas. Subsequently, the path passes perpendicularly through the “locked” golden gate, leading to a sunken plaza and a rock performance center.

The Unreason Of The Modern: The Transformation Of The Sacred

A3

YALE

Sacred space is produced via an interruption of the rational. The symbolism of the church has traditionally been achieved using an unpredictable/figural mass and juxtaposing it to an otherwise homogenous and predictable context, i.E the displaced church-plaza as an interruption of regular space. Our reinterpretation of the church is achieved through a similar process, the introduction of irrational space as an interruption to the highly rational mat building typology. The mat buildings offers homogeny and the possibility of continuity while preserving clear structure and reason. Through the juxtaposition of regular against irregular, the intuitive against the rational, the project negotiates the idealistic notion of democracy as seen with a nonhierarchical building type and the ideological notion of sacrality associated with intuition and the irrational. * in collaboration with Adam Wagoner

Heterogenous Space - Homogenous Hall: A CONCERT AT THE BARBICAN

A4

YALE

Multi-level connections and pathways crossing the project maintain the broader function of the site: connecting the diverse communities inhabiting the City of London. Furthermore, the porous sectional qualities of the proposed complex create distinctive opportunities for interaction between the artists, the audience, the active residential community as well as the public passing through. Unique for its semi-private seating pockets located within a continuous space, preserves the experience of vineyard seating albeit offering a non-hierarchical division that corresponds to a contemporary social structure. The encompassing continuous striation of the interior architecture serves to further blur the boundaries between frequently distinguished elements, including the stage, audience seating, interior walls and ceiling. This deliberate elimination of discrete structural boundaries allows the concert Hall to increase the dialogue between architecture, audience and performers.

A5

PRATT

Hundred years after Einstein’s first theories and their attempted validation in Potsdam, the scientific method (hypothesis and proof) is becoming obsolete. With universal access to enormous amounts of data, science is shifting to an algorithmic paradigm. No theoretical models need to be constructed and tested when statistical algorithms find patterns and direct answers by crawling through a global database. It is a new way of understanding the world that dispenses with unified theories or models of the systems around us. It simply looks at the systems themselves. *in collaboration with Michael Archer

By rescaling the super quadra block from 200m to 50m, the bar buildings serve much better urbanistically as they become urban amenities including retail and public facilities, rather than the disintegrated residential blocks. The open ground scape allows for a freedom resembling the super quadra housing blocks while imposing the much needed pedestrian scale with street walls and program. Finally the project preserves the Brazilian style of expressive landscape and an ambiguity between interiority and exteriority, private and public.

The subdivision plan is a guide to suggest diversity in subdivision of each block and subsequently, the type and diversity of development sites and their activity. The development blocks in Fazenda Paranoazinho are large, varying from approx. 80m lengths up to 150m. Most are square and rectangular in shape set within a curved street grid. A simple set of subdivisions within each block will allow for a large variety of development options.

The project negotiates the complex urban issues faced by the residents of Brasilia and its suburban areas. The modernist city which was designed and realized by Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer turned its back to the medieval model, separating functions and imposing an auto vehicular scale. Moreover, the symbolic power of the architecture and planning stagnates any effort to develop alternative modes of urbanity in the entire district. In an attempt to create urban structure, the project integrates between the famous ‘super quadra’ arrangement and the European urban perimeter block model.

The Public Infrastructure Terminal Urban Project at Cambridge

A7

YALE

The public infrastructure terminal (PIT) acts as a public foundation, supporting and negotiating two thousand new residential units in Central Square. The PIT borrows principles from the success of Boston’s great streets and vast landfill projects of the 19th Century. Utilizing the underdeveloped superblock located North of Massachusetts Avenue, the project proposes a 60’ deep excavation, allowing for 8 full stories of residential housing, while maintaining the relatively low elevation of the existing streets. The underground terminal is connected to the existing infrastructure of the T-stop and streets. The terminal redefines the public realm by interlacing all degrees of public program including transportation, parking, shopping, recreational park and residential lobbies. The hybridized program creates a new active parkscape that mediates between public and private areas. An integrated cultural performance venue is activates the site at night. Situated at the end of Main Street, it creates a more definitive square that is visually connected with the urban fabric across the Charles River * in collaboration with Katarzyna Pozniak

telzstone gardens: suburban community living

Following a recent submission of concept design, I currently lead a team of three additional designers for the schematic design. Due to the success of the first concept, I have also been approached to prepare a concept design for the adjacent mixed-use block, including the design of a sports and recreation facility.

The main features of the design included a new entrance sequence, a series of mult-ilevel living spaces, and a double height transparent volume connected to a terrace, bringing in the previously shut out landscape into the both levels of living spaces of the house. This renovation resulted in a reciprocity between the old and the new, by the rejuvination of spaces, as well as preservation of the attached historical house.

The historical private residence at Steep Hill Road is heavily disjuncted from multiple additions and extensions over the past two centuries. Working with a co-designer, we delivered a set of drawings to the contractor for an addition and renovation that would both reorganize the space as well as bring in light to both floors.

Along with 3 co-designers, I worked on the schematic design and design development of the airport.

Louis Armstrong Airport N. Terminal: Airport, New Orleans USA

During the schematic phase of the airport, we developed the massing, the exterior skins, as well as the layouts of the terminal, concourses in relationship to the existing airport, the highway and the airfield. During the Design Development phase we fully detailed the interior ceiling and skylights, as well as the exterior walls and interior spaces. Due to my considerable experience in Revit, my role in this project was particularly important. Not only was I designated to design most of the exterior walls, tI was put in charge to manage a very complex BIM coordination, which included a large group of associated architects and consultants.

Along with another co-designers, I worked from conceptual design phase, including one residential towers, as well as a mixed-use podium, to the design development phase. During the schematic phase, we developed multiple options for the building skin and image. One of the main features of the tower, was designing the cantilever which resulted from a complex legal and zoning situation, sharing the lot with the underground rail system. Within the gigantic truss, we developed a swimming pool, overlooking 11th Avenue. Due to my experience with towers, I lead the design effort on the tower, particularly focusing on the detailing and visualizations of the undulating glass wall and terraces. Throghout the design process, I presented weekly to the client. Due to the highly valuable real estate in Manhatta, we worked closely with the Corcoran Group as well as the developer Silverstein and Elad Properties.

Along with three co-designers, I worked from the schematic design phase of the masterplan, which includes two residential towers, a Four Seasons hotel, a large retail mall with blackbox theaters and two office towers, to the design development phase of the office towers and hotel. During the Design Development phase I was responsible to fully develop the hotel and office towers leading to a ‘Fang-An’ drawing set. The work on the office towers particularly focused on exterior walls, cores, mechanical floors and parking. For the hotel component, I worked closely with the Four Seasons Hotel senior corporate director for new construction, developing the guest floors as well as the typical individual rooms, considering Four Seasons design guidelines. In this effort I had an extreme amount of correspondence with the Hong Kong office as well as biweekly design and coordination meetings with clients and consultants.

Working one-on-on with the principal, I designed the tower through concept and schematics. Over the course of the project, I was part of an effort to move the project into Revit. During the conceptual phase of the project, we primarily developed the massing and louvered skin of the buildings, the cores and residential units. During the Schematic design phase, we developed a marketing package for the project, primarily focused on contextual residential layouts which included separate staff circulation and living quarters within a vertical tower. The project also inclided a luxury amenity rooftop and an underground parking garage. Throghout the design process, I co-lead together with the project manager the weekly international video design presentations for the client. Due to highly particular local codes and regulations, I coordinated with local associates on firecodes and zoning issues.
