CREATIVITY IS INTELLIGENCE HAVING FUN! - Albert Einstein To celebrate the creative intelligence in our students, we at Greenfield have strived to put together a school Year Book. We wanted to give our students a platform to showcase their creative expression. It was heartening to see many of our students coming up with articles, pieces of art, stories, poems, jokes and more.. From nowhere and from out of the blue, there were artists, writers and poets popping up from all corners of the school! The school was abuzz with a flurry of activities. I wondered, where were all these talented kids hiding all this while?!! We dedicate this book to our legendary Chairman and Vice Chairman for creating this opportunity for us to foster and mentor the innate talent in the children, our parent community has placed under our care. This is our second Year Book, and we hope to bring it out each year with more colour, creativity and diversity. Without much ado, I welcome you to dig deep into the pages and see for yourself the myriad hues our students have used to express themselves. Happy Reading!

An Interview with Our Dear Principal: Hana Shareen and Gaanavi Chilaka Grade 3 Two students/fans, Hana Shareen and Gaanavi Chilaka from Grade 3 wanted to interview the Principal Mrs. Aruna Iyer on Thursday October 4th 2018. At first, they were nervous and daunted by the thought of merely facing her. In the end, the two girls walked out wiser, with a bright smile and a hand full of goodies. Their apprehension had turned into admiration. They realised how warm, loving and understanding their Principal was. Hana: Good morning dear Madam. We are going to ask you a few ques-

tions today hope you enjoy it. My name is Hana. Gaanavi: My name is Gaanavi and I will begin with my first question. Principal: Yes sweetheart I'm all set.

Gaanavi: Maam how did you feel when you first visited this school? Principal: I had visited this school in October 2014 with the Principal of my earlier school. At the time, it was a complete mango grove and there was only a mud track. I felt the school looked very familiar when I first walked in as a Principal. It was no more a mango grove, but had been transformed into a beautiful school. Hana: What did you want to be when you grew up? Principal: I didn't have big dreams. I just wanted to be happy with whatever I did. I became a teacher by chance and I loved it. I pursued my higher studies and earned two degrees in education. I also completed my Masters in Education along with a Diploma for teaching from the Cambridge University. Gaanavi: Why do you like trees? Principal: How do you know I like trees? Gaanavi: That’s because you encourage planting so my trees in our campus. Principal: I am thrilled to answer this question, because I really love trees. I have always been drawn to them. I want to pursue a course in photography as well as, become an expert in taking interesting photographs of trees. Yes, that's one of the items on my bucket list. Trees give us flowers, fruits, oxygen shade, rain, cool breeze, and yet we choose to chop them. So sad! A few years ago, there was a notification to chop down an old rain tree near my house. I raised awareness and a protest movement in my neighbourhood. I contacted the local corporator and saw to it that the tree was saved. Hana: Wow! That's really nice. Maam, why did you want to be a Principal? Principal: I love children. I'm even happy to be a teacher because I can still get to be with them. Principal is just what happened by chance.

Gaanavi: Did you want to be a principal because your parents wanted you to be? Principal:(laughs) Sweetie, I've never wanted to be a Principal. Of course my parents were proud of me when I became a principal. But I feel I'm first a teacher and would always want to be remembered as a teacher. Hana: If you love children do you ever feel what we feel? Principal: Aaah! That's a great question. I try to feel whatever you feel. I cannot guarantee it I do all the time. I've forgotten childhood but try to remember it as much as I can. I try to call you'll up on the stage as much as I can to hand out prizes because I know you love it. If you think that I'm not understanding I’d like you to come and share with me what you feel so I can work to do things better for you. Gaanavi: Maam why do you want to start plastic-free awareness in the school? Principal: (Smiling) I love trees. I'm conscious about the environment. Plastic is suffocating our planet. It doesn't let water seep. It's toxic polymers pollute the soil and water killing plants and animals. It is also dangerous to humans. It is our responsibility to help you children understand so that we can leave a better world for you and you can grow up to be happy and healthy adults. Gaanavi: If your students want to be like you what tips would you give them? Principal: (Laughs) Love the children because that's what I do. When I come to work it's not work for me. I love every bit of what I do. Here's a Tip: You can't always do what you want to do. But, you can learn to do what you have to do and if you begin to love what you have to do, it will no more be a job. It will be a fun ride. Gaanavi: Why did you name the school Greenfield Public School Maam? Principal: Oh I did not sweetheart. Our Chairman christened this school Greenfield Public School, because of the luscious greenery in the campus. Hana: Maam, why do you think it is important to have sports activity for children? Principal: Children love to play. I believe there is a strong correlation between physical activity and mental health. If you stay active and exercise regularly, your brain will function much better and we are here to train your brain. Hana and Gaanavi: That's all we have Maam. Thank you for your time. We have learnt a lot from you today. Principal: Your very welcome sweethearts. It was my pleasure.

Grade 3 and 4 Students debate Over: Schools must mandate uniforms or not. An excerpt of the debate held on 26/6/18 by the 4th graders. You be the judge...

For

1. Wearing a uniform to school gives a sense of pride to the students and help associate with the school 2. They are unique and help in easily identifying students belonging to the particular school. 3. Wearing uniform helps ease morning routines for both students and parents as they won't have to worry about what to wear everyday. 4. Uniforms also promote a spirit of uniformity and unity. 5. It ensures all kids are treated equal, without considering their backgrounds. 6. School uniforms cost lesser than most modern and trendy clothes. 7. It helps students focus on their studies rather than style, fashion or get distracted by gaudy colours. 8. It fosters a disciplined atmosphere. 9. It may take less time to get ready as the students don’t have to think about what to wear every morning. 10. School uniforms reduce the burden of clothing and style related peer pressure among students.

Against

1. School uniforms reduce individuality by restricting uniformity. 2. It prevents students from expressing themselves. 3. Uniforms restrict diversity by forcing the student body to dress in the same way. 4. New school uniforms can be expensive and become an added burden to the parents. 5. Public schools requiring school uniforms could eat into the taxpayer's money on unnecessary expenditure which could otherwise be used for other public welfare. 6. Punishing students for not wearing uniform could instill socioeconomic stereotypes. 7. Children in school uniform are not free from bullying. 8. Uniforms are made of durable and strong fabrics which could be uncomfortable and restricting to the students. 9. Instead of wearing what the students already have the parents are pressured into buying expensive uniforms.

Holes That Take Away Souls Students of Greenfield Attended the geography Summit on 20-22 July 2018. Over 30 schools had participated to discuss the current ongoing issues and ways and means to tackle hem. The students of GPS brilliantly presented their research papers on the open borewell menace in the city.

(Sufian, Noya Almira, Meenakshi)

They brought forth the scourge of neglect, by the Bengaluru municipal authorities. Water is drying up in the city. Desperate to look for water, citizens have been digging borewells unscrupulously. The topic of discussion for the day was not water. It was the callous issue of neglecting Borewells that run dry are treated with disdain, neglected and abandoned. We as citizens are partly responsible for this.

Innocent children playing in the neighbourhood fall into these borewells and get trapped. It is a near impossible task to rescue these children. Many innocent lives have been lost even before help has arrived. What a waste of taxpayers money. Hours of labour, lost in fixing the problem that should not have existed in the first place, had the citizens and the municipal authorities not been so negligent. The students undertook a survey in the neighbourhood and found a number of borewells dug, abandoned and left open. They also collected data about laws citizens are required to obey regarding unused borewells. “I’m serious about looking into this issue because it has taken the life of one of my distant relatives. (Says Meenakshi one of the Co-authors of this presentation. ) The students visited Janagraha center for citizenship and democracy where they gathered data about open borewells in the neighbourhood. They went on an extensive drive educating the citizens of the neighbourhood about the terms and conditions of sinking borewells and the measures to be taken to decommission unused borewells .

Journey to a Gratifying Triumph- by Devanshi Gupta It all began with our Chemistry teacher Ms. Joshi nominating Abhinav, Mutaz and myself to present a project at the prestigious ‘Green Hackathon’ expo. We brainstormed over several ideas and finally bottled down to making an eco-friendly house. The theme for this year, was to address civic issues in the city and provide innovative solutions to promote sustainable living in the most scalable, impactful and cost-effective way. We were pumped with excitement and adrenaline by the mere thought of being able to create something that could change the world for the better. Our aim was to use all-natural pollution-free, sustainable and durable construction material. We attended an inspiring and educational workshop. We were taught about several natural materials that could be combined to make durable end products. Our Principal Mrs. Aruna Iyer was a great source of inspiration. We learned a great deal from her. Merely a great idea is not enough. Presentation and socialising the concept will go a long way. And so it did! Using her advice, we prepared a succinct yet compendious 3-minute video presentation about our hack. The organisers loved it. The arduous yet gratifying journey began from here. After several hours of after-school stay backs and trial and error attempts, we learnt to make the ideal mortar. We used 3 parts of clay, 3 parts of sand, 3 parts of straw, 2 parts of calcium carbonate, 3 parts of jaggery and 1 part water. We also used turmeric and neem powder to repel insects. Building a prototype was not an easy task. The hot weather was not helping the warm mortar to cool down easily. Finally, after three long days, the mould was ready. This time it was hard and unbreakable. We were all nervous on selection day. Our happiness knew no bounds when we heard our names being called out as the finalists. We had done it! Our sincere thanks to our Chemistry teacher, Ms. Joshi Rani and our Principal Mrs. Aruna Iyer for their encouragement and immense support every step of the way.

A key hole Surgery -Sarah 4 A Did you know a key hole surgery is also called as a laparoscopic surgery? It is a modern surgical procedure. In the earlier days, for surgeries like gall bladder removal or appendix removal, they used conduct painful operations with the patient being unconscious and the doctor having to make a big cut in the stomach to remove and operate. The procedure was painful and the patient had to be in the hospital for several days in postoperative care. Today the procedure is fairly simple. It is a done in a day’s time. However, a very trained surgeon is needed to conduct this procedure.

The patient is advised not to eat, drink alcohol, and stop taking other medications. The patient is given anesthesia and made conscious. The doctor makes an incision in the abdomen that is about 1 to 1.5 cm wide. The doctor will insert an instrument called as a laparoscope into the incision. Carbon dioxide is blown thrown the tube to inflate the organs so the doctor can get a better view. The laparoscope has a tiny camera in the end. The doctor can monitor the organs on the television monitor or in front of him. For removal of the problem region or growth, laparoscopic surgical instruments are inserted. Once the procedure is complete the doctor puts one or two stitches and dresses the wound. The patient is asked to rest for a few hours and then sent home. The patient is not allowed to drive for about 24 hours, so a friend or family member can drive him home. Keyhole surgery is an outpatient procedure. Some of the commonly done procedures using keyhole surgery today are gynecology, Gastroenterology and Urology.

My Futuristic School Bus –Ayman Grade 3 My contribution to the modern transport system, when I grow up, would be to design a Futuristic School Bus. My idea is to make school buses more attractive and fun so, the children can enjoy coming to school regularly. Some of the features I would like to have built in my Modern School bus are as follows: • Have a pop-up desk, to address unfinished homework. • A dedicated Wi-fi connectivity for browsing, enabled with a child lock for app stores. • In a 10 degrees centigrade weather, the children inside will be as hot and toasty. • In 40 degrees centigrade, the children can be as cool as a cucumber. • The door will be equipped with a sensor that can scan the children’s IDs to open the door for them to board and alight. • On camping and field trips the bus can be a safe place for the children to camp. The glass windows will be scratch and shatter proof in case of an attack by a burglar or a miscreant. • The bus will be able to toggle between auto-drive and manual mode for long distance driving comfort. • There will be a dedicated niche for a first-aid box and rescue jackets in case of an emergency. • The bus will have robot-arms, for the children to keep their bags up on the rack and pick up falling bottles. These robot-arms can also clean and pick up spilt snacks. • The bus will be designed as an all-terrain vehicle for a comfortable ride on roads as well as on pot-holes.. • Would you like to place an order today?

My Modern Caravan –Arman Shariff : Grade 3 This is Arman’s Caravan. It is a specially designed transport system to help all the labourers who stay far away from their families. Lack of water and poor sanitation is the major cause of diseases. Araman’s Caravan will have the capability to take hydrogen and moisture from air and convert it into water. This caravan has got special, comfortable beds for labourers to relax, washrooms and for a clean environment. The most important feature of this caravan is that it has solar panels on the roof to generate electric energy for the caravan to run on. It will have a hi-definition smart television behind every seat, for entertainment and leisure. The Caravan will have special water storage tanks in the back for collecting and filtering rainwater, as well as maintain cool temperature inside throughout the day. The roof and the walls of the caravan will have temperature sensors to regulate the temperature inside. It will be an eco-friendly vehicle because, it will run on solar power and not emit poisonous gases to pollute the environment. It is affordable and cost effective. For more information about my caravan please contact me at : Greenfield Public School, Grade 3.

The Divine Feeling of Climbing the Tirumala Hill. –Varsha R Grade VIII Tirumala Tirupati, is a pilgrim center located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Many people visit Tirumala from different parts of the world to seek the blessings of Lord Venkateshwara. Recently my family and I had the opportunity to visit the divine temple. There is also a walkway paved for devotes to walk to the top chanting the name of Lord Venkateshwara. It is a 3 Km hike on foot. The power of the lord’s divine blessing is experienced all through the journey. It took us five hours to reach the temple. To my surprise, the steep climb did not make me tired at all. It was nothing short of a miracle. My heart was filled with joy and excitement, to seek the blessings of lord Venkateshwara. Climbing the steps gave me peace of mind and a sense of satisfaction I can never forget. It was my first visit to the temple. I wish to make many more trips to the Tirumala hill in the future.

Poetry Corner Save our Planet -Akash Kumar Grade 7

Nature is known as essential; Is being destroyed by everything artificial; Also known as beneficial Why isn’t it protected by the official? This is the chance to prove our being; Our nature is worth saving It provides water, air and soil; In return, we are exploiting and beginning to spoil. A small favour from every soul is what it needs; A commitment from us in return for its free good deeds. To protect, preserve and return its due pride; For without it we would never have survived.

Moon’s Blessings - Hana Shareen III B With darkness glides the moon, It shines through my window soon When night falls and it’s dark my body wants to rest, From all days running and all things, I do best. Seeing the moon feels like a blessed sight. Thanks, moon for coming to my window almost every night. My Brothers - Sarah IV A

My brothers, They are not like the others. We may fight, But we are very alike. My brothers may stand out from the rest; But to me, they are the best. Together for hours, we like reading stories; These precious times will make my best memories.

My Friends - by Zaina Ara Grade IV We are best friends. We are beyond trends. We don’t take rest. We always put in our best. We are like birds sitting in the nest. Preparing to fly out with zest. We study together for our test. We are prepared to put in our best. What we share in common is love. Together like the peaceful dove. Towards our goals let us move So, our futures can improve.

A Hundred Years Ago – by Parth Grade IV

Sometimes, I sit and wonder about what I don’t know. Like, what the earth was a hundred years ago. Did the caveman ride on a dinosaur? Did the flowers ever grow? Did giant spiders rule the earth? Were deserts filled with snow? I wish they built a time machine; And picked me up to go. Well, we could guess all that; But, it was a hundred years ago. I wonder what the story was; A hundred years ago.

What My Dream Taught Me - Ayman Grade 3 Yesterday , I had a strange dream. A big gorilla entered my house and began to eat my breakfast. It was so hungry, that it finished almost everything on the table. I was scared and began to run away from it. Surprisingly, the gorilla began to chase me. I ran to France and he was still chasing me. I ran around the whole world, went to the moon on a rocket, came back to earth and saw he was still chasing me. Finally, I got tired and stopped. The gorilla came close to me and said, “Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to be friends.” Moral: Looks can be deceptive.

Story Time Jenny Gets Help –by Tamiksha IV A Jenny was nine years old. She had gone to the well to draw water. She let down the bucket with the rope but the well was too deep, and the water was at the bottom. She was too tiny to be able to draw water. She tried again and again but her effort was in vain. She sat by the well and began to cry. Mummy waited for Jenny at home. After sometime, she went to the well to see what had happened to Jenny. Mummy found her crying beside the well. “Why are you crying, Jenny?” asked mummy. “I can’t reach the water.” replied Jenny. Mummy quickly put down the rope and brought up the bucket of water. “See, how easy it is Jenny. If you can’t do something, you can always ask for help. There is no need to sit and cry. Crying is never going to help you.” Jenny wiped her eyes and went home with mummy.

Story of Five Fingers - Zaina Ara Grade IV A Once upon a time, in a hand, there lived a family of five fingers. One day, they decided to have a contest of importance. The thumb said to the other fingers “Without my help you will never be able to write.” The index finger said, “Without my help you cannot point at anybody.” The middle finger said “I’m the tallest so I am the leader of this family.” The ring finger said, “I wear gold rings so, I am famous.” Now the last little finger said, “I stand in first when the hands are joined for prayer to thank the lord for everything he has given us. The other fingers were ashamed and agreed with him. Moral: When all are equal in the eyes of the lord, who are we to differentiate?

A Peek Into the Diary of a Little Princes called Joshita. –by Joshita Balanarayanan: Grade IC Home Sweet Home I am a resident of Bengaluru. I live with my parents and my doting grandmother in a three bedroom house. I sleep, play, eat, study and enjoy being at home and spending time with my family. My parents love me unconditionally so, I’m very comfortable around them They have bought me a cute study desk on which I sit to study and do my homework. My home may not be a palace or a mansion but, it is perfect just the way it is. I love my home.

My Favourite Fruit My favourite fruit is the watermelon. I like it because it is sweet, juicy and tasty. It is green on the outside and red side. The black seeds make the watermelon look beautiful and attractive when it is cut. Watermelons can be consumed in many ways. Be it juice, milkshake or a bold big bite. It is simply yummy any way!

The Naughty Elephant Once upon a time, there was a farmer who owned a banana farm and lived on it. Near by, there lived a herd of elephants. Every afternoon when the farmer was asleep a naughty elephant would come out of the herd, eat the bananas and destroy the rest just for fun. When the elephant plucked the bananas from the tree, he would trumpet and give a wry smile. The poor farmer would to wake up to the noise and chase it back to its herd. It went on for a while until the poor farmer could take it no more. One day the farmer decided to teach the naughty elephant a lesson. He dug a big trench around the farm and covered it with hay. The following afternoon, the elephant came as usual, but it was different this time. He fell into the trench and got trapped. The naughty elephant got frightened and began to trumpet aloud. Hearing the noise, the other elephants came and rescued him from the trap. The elephant learnt his lesson. He never set foot into the poor farmer’s field again. Moral: No deed goes unrewarded. If you trouble others, you are sure to get in trouble some day!

Apple of My Eye (Parent: Mr. Altaf Nawaz Shah) Hana Shareen: Tud-duk..Tud-duk..Tud-duk the small ultrasound room reverberated with the sound of the heartbeat similar to galloping horses on a racetrack. On the monitor I could trace the outline of a baby, smaller than the palm of my hand moving around like a flawless ballet dancer. I was tearing like a child who got his favourite toy, This memory is still as fresh as a flower glistening in the morning sun. Daughters hold a special place in the hearts of the fathers and Hana was no exception. I couldn't express in words the feeling of seeing her for the first time. Hana was a happy child. Every day was joyful and yet challenging than the previous one with her. The first work she spoke was ‘Amma’. And she called me and everyone else by that word. Years passed and she grew up faster than I thought. I remember when we held her tiny fingers and walked her to preschool. She slowly walked away sniffling her tears. She showed more courage than me and my wife. Her mother an I stayed out by the school compound for the next couple of hours with tears in our eyes. It was our first separation from her ever. Kindergarten classes flew by and Hana proved to be quite a competitor winning many contests even at that age. Soon it was time for her to go to a new home—a new school. Greenfield Public School was shortlisted from the dozen schools we visited and we are thankful to this day. We had made the right decision for our child. The school teachers and aunties became Hana’s parents and guardians from the time she entered the school premises. In every grade the school teachers has only one thing to say about her. Hana is a wonderful student and a wonderful child. You make us proud every single day Hana!

Daksh Jeetendra Ramchand Grade III B (Parent: Mrs. Surabhi Ramchand) He is the Apple of my Eye. Reason for my Joy. Although at times he makes me sigh; With him, my time does fly. I pray one day, he touches the sky; Soar high and high and high.

With Daksh a new me was born too; With loads of excitement and sets of anxieties I never knew. We started our son-mother journey; It’s been a full time job honey. Loving, caring, guiding, scolding and arguing; A real test of patience and yet gratifying Although my teeny tiny cranky bundle has overgrown my arms; He will never out grow my heart with all his charms. I feel proud seeing to him bloom; Into a happy, independent, confident and a mature kid. There will always be a pull and push of emotions on my part; I will always want my child to fly and yet remain close to my heart.

He’s a piece of me that makes me a whole; I love you Antt Shantt (too much) my precious soul.

My Meenakshi—(Parent: Mrs. Sunitha P) Meenakshi was a shy an introvert child. She seemed to seek comfort only with her father and me. She began interacting with her first next circle when we relocated from Madurai to Coimbatore. We relocated to Bangalore when Meenakshi was in the fifth grade. After a lot of research and recommendations through word of mouth, we enrolled Meenakshi in Greenfield Public School. It was here she learned to cope with the new environment and syllabus. She learned to connect well with her peers. Meenakshi is now in the 7th Grade. I have seen a lot of positive and vibrant changes in her. I strongly believe that GPS is helping in shaping her thoughts and identity in a big way. Meenakshi loves her school. I see her leaving for school with confidence, pride, respect and humility in her eyes. I can vouch with confidence that, GPS has shaped my child by giving equal importance to physical, mental and emotional well-being. I know that my kids are holding the hands of humble and great minds in this institution. We are extremely happy that Greenfield Public School is not only focusing on academic advancement, but also holistic development of my kids. It’s helping my kids in building their character and become responsible citizens and leaders. I would like to thank the teaching and non-teaching staff for their love and commitment towards student’s overall development. I can recollect, seeing an inspiring quote, in the GPS office. It said, “ You say, I forget, you teach me, I will understand; You involve me, I will learn.” I can proudly say that our kids in GPS are learning through involvement. I wish Greenfield Public School all the best to reach new heights. Thank you!
