WHY ARE LEBANESE PETS LEAVING THE COUNTRY? Dog and Cat are like too many animals in Lebanon. They are strays that suffered horrible abuse on the streets. Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA) rescued them, gave them the medical treatment they needed them a temporary home. They lived happily in the BETA shelter, but not happily ever after. Dog and Cat never found adopted families and forever homes. As BETA rescued more and more animals, the shelter got fuller and fuller and their funds ran lower and lower. With no families interested in taking Dog and Cat in, BETA has no choice but to send them abroad. So Dog and Cat have packed their bags, said their goodbyes and are leaving the country to their new homes overseas.
E S E N A B LE T E P T A P E X AM PROGR
To raise awareness on the unfortunate fact that animals like Dog and Cat must immigrate to find homes, BETA has launched a new program and a corresponding website. The Expat Pets Program aims to raise awareness to encourage adoptions and funds via donations. Get to know more animals like Dog and Cat on The Expat Pets Program website xpatpets.com where each has a story. You can use this website to donate to the BETA shelter to keep them in Lebanon or donate to the travel expenses and rehoming program to give them an opportunity abroad. If you meet an animal you click with, you can adopt a dog locally in Lebanon or internationally anywhere in the world through the website as well. Like many Lebanese, Dog and Cat have their share of complaints about Lebanon. Sometimes they have even wished they could have been born elsewhere. But they know there’s no place like home. They already miss the weather and the shawarma but most of all their friends. They even regret never having taken the opportunity to ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon.

MON AMI, MON AMOUR
CONFESSIONS OF A
COUGAR WHAT SLEEPING WITH YOUNGER MEN IS REALLY LIKE
There were times, following my divorce, when I wondered if I’d ever sleep with another man again. I came across middle-aged men and they were so overburdened with baggage that even casual sex was out of the question, let alone a relationship. Then one day a beautiful young man with whom I had been working spent the afternoon getting drunk with me and made a rip-roaring pass. The ensuing night proved one of the more exciting experiences of my life. No one could have been more surprised than me at the departure from the norm. I clearly remember seeing the photographs in the papers of a smiling Sam Taylor-Johnson with her young husband’s hand on her pregnant stomach. The age gap between them I read was — is! — 23 years. And my first, wholly uncharitable thoughts were, “God, has that foolish woman learnt nothing at her age? There’s a car crash in the making.”
12 | R A G M A G | www.ragmag.co
THE ENSUING NIGHT PROVED ONE OF THE MORE EXCITING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE I blanch now at how unspeakably judgmental I was. Shame on me. For the couple, currently aged 47 and 24 respectively, have two children and remain together. Today, I am of the opinion that she is strong, brave, admirable. And, serves me right, she also turns out to have evolution on her side, for a recent study by researchers at McGill University in Canada maintains that there is a biological argument for the cougar phenomenon of older women selecting and procreating with younger men (stronger, healthier sperm).

CONFESSIONS OF A COUGAR | WHAT SLEEPING WITH YOUNGER MEN IS REALLY LIKE
So the cougar craze is not just a passing fashion among ageing female celebrities such as Madonna and Demi Moore. There is a certain scientific imperative behind it. But even if there wasn’t, while I may have tutted in the past, I am not tutting now. I am 48, a year older than Taylor-Johnson. I have completely changed my tune. Although I already have children, so “evolution” as justification slightly falls by the wayside in my case, I have discovered through a certain amount of experience that there is much to be said for relationships with younger men. It was extraordinary to me that one of the first men I slept with after my split from my husband was nearly 20 years younger than me. How did that happen? I did not court it. But then it happened again, and again, as it must have done to many of my more secretive peers. Three quarters of the men I have had flings with since my divorce have been under 35; half of them 25 or under (but, I hasten to add, none under 21).
WE SHOULD BE TRASHING THE MODERN-DAY TABOO AS SEXIST AND ILLOGICAL
IT WAS EXTRAORDINARY TO ME THAT ONE OF THE FIRST MEN I SLEPT WITH AFTER MY SPLIT FROM MY HUSBAND WAS NEARLY 20 YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME
They have all been as single as me and nothing has occurred that is illegal, immoral or hurtful. Still, I can hear the sharp intake of disapproving breath resounding queasily about the nation’s breakfast tables, even though we were consenting adults and on each occasion these young men were the ones who very much seduced me; not the other way round (I would never have been so bold). There is still part of the judgmental me who is of the same opinion as the disapproving masses and that perhaps explains why so many women my age are staying silent on the subject. They feel delight, but at the same time a certain shame, as our beleaguered sisters were made to feel in the past if they fell pregnant outside marriage. We should not. We should be trashing the modern-day taboo as sexist and illogical. If I were 25 and dating a man in his forties, who would bat an eyelid? Double standards on this matter abound.
FEBRUARY 2015
BELIEVE ME, FOR A LONG TIME I HAD A NOTION THAT THE MAN I WOULD LIKE TO BE WITH WOULD BE “AGEAPPROPRIATE”
Believe me, for a long time I had a notion that the man I would like to be with would be “ageappropriate”, whatever that means. I guess of the same generation; born within about ten years of myself. So it would be that the friends, the humour, the points of reference, the priorities, would be roughly on a par, and there would be less dissonance in terms of wisdom, experience and outlook. And I really did try.

MON AMI, MON AMOUR
Since my husband and I separated, I have met and been out with several men of my own age, and in their fifties, a couple in their sixties. And every single time there has been an issue of some sort to prevent long-term commitment. This is because the decades pile on the baggage; they just do, in all its infinite variety. You name it, I either have it myself or have come across it. I think of significant ex-partners, children, ageing parents, job insecurity, career combustion, mid-life crisis, the exuberance-free flesh of bodies that blossomed long ago; psychosexual problems. Excess baggage indeed: commitment phobia, fear, bitterness, entrenched habits, cynicism, long-term mental health issues, an acute awareness of time passing, encroaching physical illness, a sense of impending mortality, existential preoccupations, you name it. Endless.
I REMEMBER THE WIDOWER WHO, ON OUR FIRST DATE, GAVE ME A VERY DETAILED, LAST-BREATH-BYLAST-BREATH ACCOUNT OF HIS LATE WIFE’S DEMISE
WHILE A YOUNG LOVER CAN GIVE AN OLDER WOMAN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE, AN OLDER WOMAN CAN GIVE HIM THE BENEFIT OF HER CONFIDENCE, EXPERIENCE AND WISDOM Even just one of these can conspire against a fledgling couple of a certain age. I remember the widower who, on our first date, gave me a very detailed, last-breath-by-last-breath account of his late wife’s demise. I could picture the death scene as vividly as one in a sentimental Victorian painting. The implication was that no woman in the world could ever live up to her. It was a touching description, but hardly one to prompt any eroticism between him and myself.
14 | R A G M A G | www.ragmag.co
With young men it is so much more straightforward. They are cleaner slates and while the chances are that the relationship will be short-lived (although not necessarily so, as exceptions such as Taylor-Johnson and Vivienne Westwood have proved), it always has the advantage of fun, vitality, the sense of living in the moment. There are benefits aplenty on both sides and it is completely ludicrous that any taboo should remain. I think mothers in particular are against their sons having sex with older women. Perhaps they feel threatened, jealous, repelled. It is a blinkered view. While a young lover can give an older woman a new lease of life, an older woman can give him the benefit of her confidence, experience and wisdom, which can have a hugely positive effect on his future relationships with women nearer his own age.

CONFESSIONS OF A COUGAR | WHAT SLEEPING WITH YOUNGER MEN IS REALLY LIKE
I have found this to be manifestly the case and I have heard many an older man speaking lyrically about a liaison in his youth with a woman twice his age, what it did for him and how he has never forgotten it. Such a relationship is without doubt memorable and special. Fortunately my friends agree. They are encouraging and sometimes jokingly envious, but I remain keenly aware that they are more liberal than most. One wisely counseled that I should not advertise the fact, for the man’s parents may set out to destroy my reputation. My young ex-lovers have all remained friends. They come to see me with confidences as well as for advice, a home-cooked supper, wine and beer on tap, friendship and laughter. There is none of the recriminations, bitterness, frustration and sadness that there so often can be with older men when a relationship fails, because the initial expectations were so different.
THE AGE GAP PRECLUDED ALL THOUGHTS OF HIM IN A SEXUAL WAY
The first younger man with whom I became involved was in his early twenties when we met; I was over 40. We were introduced at a party by a mutual friend in his thirties. David and I started work on a project together, which meant he had to visit my office a lot. For weeks it absolutely did not cross my mind either to be interested in him or that he would be in me. The age gap precluded all thoughts of him in a sexual way, but we made friends. There was respect between us and humour. We went out for coffee sometimes, then drinks. The frequency of our meetings for work meant the slow build-up of a narrative of each others’ lives outside the purely professional realm. He found me, much to my embarrassment, in tears one day, after a particularly nasty row with my father. He comforted me with a hug and with words that displayed an emotional intelligence beyond his years. Looking back I suppose that was when things very subtly shifted and I began, even unconsciously, to think differently about him. It was soon afterwards that we spent that memorable drunken afternoon and the absolutely-notinevitable happened.
In bed, what younger men may lack in experience they make up for with enthusiasm, energy and abandon. They are beautiful, appreciative, open-minded, less inhibited and less sexist. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky in the ones I have met. While a long-term diet of internet porn has given rise to a terrible misogyny and laddishness in many of their peers, it has by no means done so in all the under-thirties. Some older men can be chauvinists between the sheets, and selfish or prim or uneasy. One lovely one I dated, in his fifties, had definite “issues” (in his case a fixation with his mother) that made for an uncertain ability to perform. This is understandable among older men and I feel sympathetic, but it has to be said I have never come across it in young men.

MON AMI, MON AMOUR
Another younger man — 35 — in my life is primarily a friend. We sleep together in the spirit of fun and cosy intimacy. The sex hasn’t had any deleterious effects on our friendship, hasn’t one jot distorted the line of communication between us — as these things so often can. He has better manners than many an older man I know. We treat each other with love and respect and he becomes touchingly put out on my behalf if a younger lover rudely fails to respond to a text or pay for a drink. There is that, of course: the often poor communication skills of some young men. Old ones are bad enough but those in their twenties take the biscuit. They do things differently now, I know, but this is definitely an arena in which the generation gap can frustrate.
THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY NOW, I KNOW, BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY AN ARENA IN WHICH THE GENERATION GAP CAN FRUSTRATE
The latest, wonderful young man appreciates the generosity of spirit that time and experience brings, even if he isn’t quite yet there himself. He tells me that many of the women of his age are so busy trying to be cool and to outwit each other and are so fearful in so many ways that it is hard for honesty and true intimacy to prevail. The current relationship is a complete joy and while I am loving it, I have no expectations at all. I know it may well be over before Christmas, but any time is a bonus. We both stand to gain from it, however brief it may turn out to be. And when it does come to an end, I shall of course be sad, but I know neither of us will regret or forget it. I hope both of us will remain friends and, in time, respectively find new and lasting love — preferably? — with people nearer our own age.

A MAN’S GUIDE TO
THE PERFECT LINGERIE

A MAN’S GUIDE TO THE PERFECT LINGERIE
FOCUS ON FABRIC It seems romantic and thoughtful to buy lingerie as an intimate gift for Valentine’s Day; however the task of acquiring beautiful underwear for your partner can be a lot more challenging than you might expect. Don’t let your gift turn into a nightmare and follow RAGMAG’s rules to avoid an awkward disaster.
Avoid Cheap and scratchy materials like nylon and polyester if you can. “Every woman loves the sensual feel of silk” You don’t need to go expensive to get what you’re looking for. Stick to our gift guide you won’t go wrong. There are so many options out there at different price levels now that there’s no excuse to buy anything less than beautiful anymore.
FIRST THING FIRST, PEEK INTO YOUR PARTNER’S UNDERWEAR DRAWER AND MAKE A NOTE OF HER SIZE
SIZE UP First thing first, peek into your partner’s underwear drawer and make a note of her size. Buying something that fits well will communicate that you are being attentive. An ill-fitting bra will not go down well. If you only learn one thing, make sure it’s her dress size. If you buy panties in the wrong dress size, you could end up receiving a furious tirade instead of gratitude and appreciation, to be specific, panties that are too small could leave your partner feeling self-conscious and humiliated when she realizes that she can’t fit into your gift. Worse, over-sized panties suggest that you see your partner’s body as larger than it is which will hardly make her feel sexy or appealing.
BYPASS BORING Remember that your preferences might not be in line with your partners. For example, while you may enjoy the look of a satin thong, she may find it incredibly uncomfortable or trashy. Alternatively, that classic white bra that you like might seem boring or matronly to her. Look at her collection of lingerie and think about what might fit into the collection without merely duplicating what she owns. When it comes to panties, examine the cuts and shapes of her favorite pair and try to find gifts that match these designs.

MON AMOUR, MON AMI
FLATTER HER FIGURE
THINK FOR TWO
You probably know which parts of your partner’s body make her happy and which parts draw the most self-criticism. Take this knowledge into consideration when buying lingerie, and make sure that you choose items that will flatter her shape. If she is proud of her flat and toned stomach then a thin slip will make her feel attractive. In contrast, if she always complains about having short legs or dislikes her thighs; sheer stockings might not be the best call.

BLATTCHAYA | AN ARTISAN LOVE STORY
The BlattChaya warehouse feels like coming home, even for a guest. There is an indecipherable familiar scent when you walk through the door, with opera music and a carpet of brightly colored tiles that beckon one to the office of the heart of today’s BlattChaya, Edgard Chaya.
Edgard, who is always impeccably dressed, sits behind a large desk with his pipe and a tin of crushed BlattChaya tile fragments he uses as a filter at arm’s reach. Sipping on an espresso while talking across from him, it feels more like a visit with a family friend than an interview. Edgard is clearly delighted to tell his story as he speaks about his revived family business, pride beams in his voice as he recounts all of the architects and others who have come through to see his work in person.
EDGARD IS CLEARLY DELIGHTED TO TELL HIS STORY AS HE SPEAKS ABOUT HIS REVIVED FAMILY BUSINESS PRIDE BEAMS IN HIS VOICE AS HE RECOUNTS ALL OF THE ARCHITECTS AND OTHERS WHO HAVE COME THROUGH TO SEE HIS WORK IN PERSON “Big architects come from around the world. Once an Italian, could only utter the words, ‘Fantastico, fantastico.’ But in general, everyone else says, ‘Wow,’” he says happily and he continues to say “I made a tile with the Arabic letter, WOW. You can’t imagine how many times I hear this.” There is a reason people come from around the world to visit BlattChaya’s workplace in Dekwaneh, in the suburbs of Beirut. It is not only the artisanal cement tiles that bring them, but the story behind these tiles, of a man with a tireless passion who turned a hobby into a trademark. BlattChaya began in the late 1800s, around 1881. Edgard’s grandfather, Tannous Chaya, whom Edgard himself does not remember, began making cement tiles. It was tradition handed down through three generations from Edgard’s grandfather to his son (Edgard’s uncle) Lyan and onto his son, Nasri. The business ended with Nasri, who was not a savvy businessman Edgard says, and the factory was abandoned. This also coincided with the start of mass production of marble, rather than the traditional terrazzo tiles that can be seen in many older Lebanese homes from the late 1800s and after, becoming more popular as it became more affordable. This artisanal work all but disappeared.
This could have been the end of BlattChaya, except for a case that serendipitously came into Edgard’s possession after his uncle passed away. It was filled with about 12 tile molds, some of which were broken, but they were enough to get started. By that time, in 1996, Edgard had been retired for two years from his long career as a money exchange officer, and had grown weary of the rest. “The rest tired me,” he says. He began experimenting with the molds. It took him four years to make his first. His daughter, Caline Chaya Chaoul, was living in Jeddeh, Saudi Arabia at the time and was used to her father’s hobbies. “I was happy for him because he was retired and knowing what an active and handyman he is, I knew how he would love to do this. I was happy to think at least he’s making himself busy. We did not take this seriously in the beginning” she says.

CULTURE CLASH
With much persistence, Edgard refined his technique. With time and resources at his disposal, he was able to do something that Caline says many others would have given up on. “It started with a passion with my father and because he wasn’t eager to make money but eager to succeed, he did. He was patient enough to take his time, to succeed and to start having tiles made in the proper way and therefore being able to sell them,” she says, continuing, “I think the most beautiful thing about this whole story is that Dad started doing tiles without him wanting to build a proper institution. He just wanted to do this to succeed and to bring back the heritage he had.” More than 100 years later, BlattChaya has now become a three-generation operation once again. Edgard is at the center, and each of the other family members has their place and their talent they also bring to the business. Karim Chaya, Edgard’s son, is a well-known industrial designer who, despite co-founding the design and production firm, ACID, spends at least an hour at the office every day. Caline handles mainly marketing and Youmna is the one behind the improved website that includes a tile simulator that allows people to choose their own tile patterns and colors. This mix of knowledge, age and experience within one family makes work both more easy and difficult, Youmna says.
“IT STARTED WITH A PASSION WITH MY FATHER AND BECAUSE HE WASN’T EAGER TO MAKE MONEY BUT EAGER TO SUCCEED, HE DID
EVERYTHING IS IMPORTANT AND PRECISE, FROM THE COLOR PIGMENTATION TO THE INTRICATE, HANDMADE MOLDS “I learned that it was very hard. I was not working just with my mother who generation-wise thinks more like me, but I had to work with my grandfather. Very different ways of seeing things…But it creates an amazing synergy. You do learn a lot…It’s extremely delicate, but very strong as well. We learn from each other, from our times,” she says. Edgard is meticulous and adamant that the process remains exactly as his grandfather did it, with the only difference being that they use electricity. First, all sand used for the cement tiles is hand-sifted. It is then washed up to five times, or as many as it takes to clean it to Edgard’s satisfaction, then it is spread to dry. Only once it is dry can it be used. The concrete tiles are made one by one, by a lengthy process of sanding, drying, curing, compressing, pouring, layering, mixing and polishing. Everything is important and precise, from the color pigmentation to the intricate, handmade molds. One other thing Edgard is unwavering about is the fact that BlattChaya must stay near the production rate it is currently at, as this ensures that all the tiles stay handmade, with the proper quality, one by one. Each tile goes through a multiple-day process that cannot be rushed, with about 20-30 sq. meters per day produced.

Each tile also has between 6 to 8 millimeters of color, to guarantee the color stays after much washing and wear. As Edgard says, it is not only the story and the look of the tiles that make them “BlattChaya,” but the fact that the quality stands above the rest. Having family involved is natural for Edgard. He cannot work with people he does not love. He even has a special tile among the many designs — nearly all are named for different places in Lebanon — called “Macanaka,” name for his children: Maxime, Caline, Nabil and Karim. He loves his tiles, “my children,” he calls them, and he loves his employees. “If I don’t have a family, I would try to find people I love as much as my family,” he says. Apparently, he has done so. There are about 10 workers, and he cares for them as an extension of his blood working in the office. “The people that are inside working with us, when he speaks about them, he calls them his children. “Lwleid.” ‘I have to bring for lwleid,’ he says. He really cares for them. He has to love his employees to be able to give and to work with them. His [employees] are his lwleid,” Caline says.
HE HAS TO LOVE HIS EMPLOYEES TO BE ABLE TO GIVE AND TO WORK WITH THEM. HIS [EMPLOYEES] ARE HIS LWLEID,” CALINE SAYS Though artisans and handmade products are now a global trend, there is still something special about a man who began an artisanal with only vague memories of watching his uncle hand press tiles. BlattChaya is well known not only in Lebanon and the Middle East, but throughout the world, with business now from New York to Geneva to Russia and many places in between. There is a delicate balance Youmna says they must maintain, to be innovative while keeping “the human soul” of BlattChaya. But ultimately, Edgard believes that people will always be looking for something tangible of the past and Youmna trusts this now.
62 | R A G M A G | www.ragmag.co
“There’s so much pressure in what’s happening outside. I used to tell him, ‘If we don’t go, we’ll go backward,’ because this is how my generation was taught. If you don’t innovate, don’t continue going forward, [Blatt Chaya] will not,” Youmna says. “And this is what he told me: ‘You will be going forward if you can stay who you are, if you can keep how it was made in the past, to keep on going, this is going forward.” This was something I understood.”

WHAT WILL THE EFFECT OF THE EURO DROPPING BE ON THE GLOBAL MARKET?
Whether your adamant about watching the patterns of yen, the dollar and the euro in the market, or find yourself traveling to and from countries that use the Euro and the Dollar, the chances are the relative value of money affects every single one of us. The chaos that could ensure with the drop in the Euro could affect not just the Euro zone, which mean the 16 nations who use the Euro as currency, but the global market. According to Bloomberg, on January 5, 2015, the euro hit a 9-year low against the dollar, falling below $1.20. For consumers, traveling to Europe and shopping with the Euro, the drops hasn’t come at a better time. The weaker Euro can encourage European consumers to buy local goods at a discount compared with local goods. For foreign companies who export to Europe, it creates a headache and loss in profits. European workers, companies and businesses are waiting for the Euro to shift positively in value and at the same time waiting for a regional recovery because when the economy slows down, so does the currency. One thing is for sure, a weaker Euro is good for the consumers, but not for companies and businesses who operate, trade and sell in the European market. RAGMAG’S VOTE PATIENCE
THE WAR ON ISIS, HOW FAR WILL IT GET? First it was in Syria and then they spread to control greater areas of Iraq. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, is expanding and using the name of Islam to rise to power by attracting Jihadis and marginalized people from post-war Iraq, the present-day war in Syria and believers from every corner of the world. The question people all over the world is asking “When will ISIS stop and who will have a role in doing so?”. Western countries and their allies have conducted air strikes in the hopes to dampen the Islamic State’s efforts, but the strikes have only led to more deaths among hostages and civilians. In a study of the Future of the War on the Islamic State conducted by Al Jazeera Center for Studies, one of the first real successes in defeating ISIS is breaking the relationship with Daech and the Sunni community. The study explains how the
Islamic State is dependent on the oil it has seized from Syria and Iraq and has a financial arsenal that allows the state to exist on its own. Because sole military intervention won’t alone dissolve the Islamic State, many experts are predicting more violence and turmoil in the near future.

RAGMAG’S VOTE WHERE IS THE WORLD GOING TO LOVE SHACK
WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF OIL? In the past several months, oil prices and oil supply have been in the news on a regular basis with many experts questioning what does the decline in oil mean and what will the demand be like for oil in five or 10 years? This energy crisis is good news for the United States because it is bringing back cheaper oil, but bad news for oil-producing countries such as Russia and Venezuela. The annual 2015 World Economic Forum in Switzerland has energy supply and demands as one of the main topics of discussion and much debate. Back in June 2014, the price of Brent crude was up around $115 per barrel. On January 20th, oil prices dropped to a low at $46.07 per barrel according to NASDAQ. In the past decade, oil prices were high, but prices spurred companies in the USA and Canada to start drilling for new, hard-to-extract crude in North America and new energy efficiencies began tampering off the demand for oil. Experts are not sure if oil prices will surge. With the death of King Abdullah in Saudi Arabia, sanctions with Iran and chaos in Iraq, it is no telling what will happen, but if instability reeks havoc in the oil-producing countries, oil prices will likely bounce back. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF FREE SPEECH AND PRESS FREEDOM IN 2015?
© 2013 THE DAILY HIIT | SCOTT OLSON-GETTY IMAGES | OYSTERCOLOREDVELVET.COM
From protests for Ferguson to the Je Suis Charlie march, public outcry all over the world grows and freedom of speech is hindered. The attack on French journalists was a shock for French society and the world. Millions marched in protest and in support of press freedom around the world. According to DemocracyNow.org, Lucie Morillon from Reporters Without Borders has never seen the support of journalists in this capacity. Throughout the world, journalists are not safe. Countries such as Pakistan, Mexico, Somalia and Egypt are death traps for journalists. There are sixteen journalist who are still imprisoned in Egypt, three of them being from the Al Jazeera network. The most
recent case, Saudi blogger, Raif Badawi was sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam. Countries like the U.S., who are allies with countries that have the least speech and press freedom, are now condemning this act, but it hasn’t stopped violence and imprisonment of journalists and citizens. Today, the issue of press freedom and free speech is recognized as more essential than ever. What this means for journalists and citizens alike is that there are growing trends for more censorship on sensitive and controversial issues—even in the most democratic countries in the world. RAGMAG’S VOTE DANGEROUS GROUNDS
FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS, WHAT IS OBAMA’S AGENDA AND ITS IMPACT FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT? Facing an electoral defeat, President Obama and his staff are rethinking the way he should govern the country. His advisors have mapped out the next two years with an agenda that includes three main broad categories; goals he can push without Congress. With or without the support from a possibly Republican controlled Congress, Obama is keen on pushing for immigration, climate change, energy, gay rights and economic issues, aides said. According the State of the Union address, Obama wants to use his power to push for more environmental rules to halt climate change. Obama announced he wanted to change immigration rules that would make it easier for millions who are illegal to stay in the country. As is the case with most presidents
FEBRUARY 2015
in their last two years in office, Obama has more freedom on shaping foreign policy and the future of relations and agreements with a number of countries. In the SOTU, Obama reaffirmed his decision to begin normalizing relations with long time estranged Cuba, he called for Congress to pass authorization on military force against the Islamic State and he asked Congress to give him power to negotiate trade agreements. While he touched on some foreign policy points, most of his speech was focused on domestic policy which means America and the rest of the world will have to watch as he develops clearly his vision for the next two years. MON AMOUR, MON AMI
JIHAD + CAROLINE
TRUE LOVE WINS THROUGH AFTER 37 YEARS A STORY TO INSTILL FAITH IN LOVE BY CAROLINE ISAAC
1975 was a tough year in the Lebanon with the Civil War and Mr Mehdi Hamdan of Hamra, Beirut decided that enough was enough and that his eldest son would be better off finishing his education in the UK. As a result, Jihad arrived in Bolton, Lancashire and started ‘A’ Level courses in Maths and Economics. His course tutor, Dr Eric Isaac (my father) had at the same time arranged for me to attend the Economics class – in that moment, unbeknown to anyone, true love was to set its seed but was to spend 37 years in germination.
We hit it off immediately and spent a great deal of time together culminating in several visits to the Lebanon in the late 70s, no mean feat in the midst of a civil war. The family home in Bhamdoun was a firm favourite and I visited all parts of Lebanon, including Byblos, Baalbek and other family in the south. Discussions with the family about marriage were never going to be easy and they certainly proved that! Alas, it was not to be, after several long and poignant conversations, I returned to the UK and threw myself into study and a career, graduating in Meteorology and Oceanography, serving in the Royal Navy as well as 30 years in IBM in the UK and South Africa.
WE HIT IT OFF IMMEDIATELY AND SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME TOGETHER CULMINATING IN SEVERAL VISITS TO THE LEBANON IN THE LATE 70S, NO MEAN FEAT IN THE MIDST OF A CIVIL WAR We both went on to marry - neither successfully, Jihad having 3 wonderful children now in good careers and at AUB. I have many god-children (the last one I delivered myself) but no children of my own. Over the years I often wondered what had happened to Jihad. On a cruise with my parents from Greece to Egypt in 2003 we sailed down the Levantine coast. I remember thinking ‘he’s only a handful of miles away’. It took another 10 years for me to pluck up the courage to be brave enough to try and find out and called an old telephone number that I had never forgotten. I spoke to someone who gave me the distinct impression that they knew Jihad but, with my Arabic being somewhat flimsy, led me to believe that Jihad was in fact dead.

JIHAD + CAROLINE | TRUE LOVE WINS THROUGH AFTER 37 YEARS
At about the same time, Jihad was trying to find me through old friends now scattered across the globe in Saudi Arabia and the UK, one of whom is today a policeman in Southampton, who had the relevant details! On 30 October 2013 the phone rang late one evening at my house in Surrey and the reconnection was made. I was at the time reading the newspaper on my IPAD which was dropped on the floor and broken – but who cares – my heart did summersaults, my whole being went into emotional overload and in that moment I knew that my life would be taking a totally different course which led to Beirut.
ON THE DAY OF THE FLIGHT, MY CLOSE FRIEND FRAN TOOK ME TO HEATHROW WITH A LARGE SUPPLY OF KLEENEX After much encouragement by Jihad and many friends in the UK, I booked a flight for November 30th 2013. In the preceding weeks, Jihad called me several times a day and we talked as if we had never been apart. The uncanny, unspoken and unquestionable connection was still there. On the day of the flight, my close friend Fran took me to Heathrow with a large supply of Kleenex. Flight attendants were concerned for me and in between gulps of air I managed to tell them the story that had led me to take that flight. I’m not too sure that was such a good idea – she too ended up in tears! I was sitting next to a very concerned Lebanese gentleman who told me that he would walk with me to the Arrivals Hall to make sure I was ok.
AFTER 37 YEARS, JIHAD WAS STOOD THERE IN FRONT OF ME WITH A HUGE BUNCH OF RED ROSES Jihad had in fact arranged for me to be collected from the plane by a friend, sure enough he was there and he arranged for me to pass through immigration as well as get my bags collected. Barely able to breathe and sipping air, I stopped for a moment just before the doors slid open into Arrivals. I tried to compose myself but it was simply no use. The world was in bizarre slow motion and felt strangely surreal.
FEBRUARY 2015
I saw his hand waving above the crowd and he ran around the back to the side of Arrivals. After 37 years, Jihad was stood there in front of me with a huge bunch of red roses. I was absolutely stunned. I had booked into the Crowne Plaza in Hamra – which Jihad had decorated with balloons, fruit, champagne and a surprise gift of a diamond and pearl necklace.

MON AMOUR, MON AMI
The emotional turmoil for both of us was tremendous – so much to talk about, so much to catch up on, where had 37 years gone? It was if the relationship had been put on ‘PAUSE’ – we simply carried on where we had left off and enjoyed every second of our time together. Jihad took me to the family home, now in El Noumerieh, where I met his mother again, both of us sobbing on each other’s shoulders. The rest of the family came and we looked through old photo albums from the 1970s – there I was, still in their memories and history. It was very humbling.
ON 31 AUGUST 2013 WE MARRIED AND AGAIN THE TISSUES WERE NEEDED NOT ONLY BY ME BUT BY OUR GUESTS AS WE READ OUT OUR HEARTFUL PERSONAL VOWS
AFTER A WONDERFUL DRIVE THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS, JIHAD PROPOSED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A BEAUTIFUL RESTAURANT IN ZAHLE We spent the next few days in and around Beirut in cafes and restaurants talking about life, families and futures. Every now and again I had to poke him and say ‘Is that really you?’ After a wonderful drive through the mountains, Jihad proposed for the second time in a beautiful restaurant in Zahle. We both knew the answer was yes and started to plan our future together. I returned to England mid-December with a fabulous diamond ring to a rapturous welcome! Christmas 2013 was a whirlwind – people wanted to know ‘the story’ which got recounted many times! With grateful thanks to Skype and FaceTime, Jihad was able to say ‘hello’ to many of them and when he came to the UK in March 2013 he passed all the rigorous ‘interviews’ family and friends had for him with flying colours.
Spring and summer was all about wedding planning – we chose a civil ceremony at an old stately home in Surrey followed by Blessings in both UK and the Lebanon. On 31 August 2013 we married and again the tissues were needed not only by me but by our guests as we read out our heartful personal vows. We are now settling in the Lebanon in Saneyah, Beirut as well as in the south at the weekends.

Life here is somewhat different from leafy Surrey - I am trying to establish our home with a blend of British and Lebanese cultures as well as meeting some wonderful new friends via the church at All Saints in Zaitouny Bay together with numerous Groups, such as the British and International Ladies Groups of Lebanon. After 37 years, I have never been so happy!

RAMI AL ALI LAUNCHES PRÊT-A-PORTER COLLECTION
Syrian-born fashion designer Rami Al Ali today unveiled his long-awaited prêt-a-porter collection to an intimate audience of fashion industry professionals in Paris. The twenty-six piece Spring/Summer 2015 collection is contemporary yet classic, and draws inspiration from the exotic splendour of nature’s most luxurious flower, the orchid. The debut collection represents a new phase for the Rami Al Ali woman, with classical silhouettes and elegant lines reflecting a relaxed yet glamorous approach to everyday wear. A plant historically associated with both innocence and mystery, the orchid’s graceful appearance commands immediate attention, whilst its reputation as a rare flower evokes a sense of refinement and purity. Al Ali was drawn to these dual connotations and the juxtaposition of femininity and strength enclosed within today’s woman. Fabrics are elegantly feminine, with chiffons, crepes and silks playing host to a stunning display of embroidery, prints and beadwork – details that have come to signify the designer’s distinctive flair. Billowing sleeves, flowing shapes and voluminous organza all nod to the delicate sculptural beauty of the opulent orchid, whilst crisp A-line dresses and sharply tailored shifts lend the pieces a chic, contemporary edge. Diaphanous dresses with a fluttering of vibrant blooms add a risqué appeal, whilst floor length gowns gracefully cascade, bringing drama and extravagance. Longline jackets and ankle grazer trousers offer a sophisticated edge to fluid blouses and embellished cocktail dresses, creating a set of effortlessly stylish closet staples for the modern woman. Taking his cue from the rich shades of the orchid, vivid limes and dark salmons complement soft peaches and delicate lavenders to create a fresh colour palette that elevates the capsule wardrobe to innovative new heights. This exciting new line marks the first of Rami Al Ali’s bi-annual prêt-a-porter collections, thrusting him into the competitive commercial market.

DIOR
PRESENTS CRUISE COLLECTION 2015 MAKE-UP
For the first time ever, Peter Philips has created and styled the make-up for the Dior Cruise Collection runway show. Peter Philips, Creative and Image Director for Dior Make-up has, for the first time, worked with Raf Simons on the Dior Cruise 2015 runway show. He has created make-up in total symbiosis with the collection, in harmony with the looks, which are colorful with splashes of black. «I wanted to create make-up that was both light and sophisticated,» emphasizes Philips, «in keeping with the Cruise spirit, fluid clothing and the summery atmosphere. The common theme in this collection is in fact the color black, which links all the looks together. Raf Simons and I wanted the make-up to be graphic and elegant, to accentuate both the beauty of the silhouettes, and this omnipresent black color.»

GUERLAIN
CEASELESSLY INNOVATES TO OFFER THE SKIN THE WHITE PERFECTION OF THE PEARL
Since the creation of its first range of modern whitening skincare in 1998, Guerlain Research made a major breakthrough in 2011 by revealing the scientific reality of the pearl’s whitening power& with the Blanc de Perle line. Three years later, the Melanin Control Technology used in the exclusive Advanced P.E.A.R.L. Complex2 introduced a revolutionary multidimensional approach that targets melanin pigment in every form – persistent, recent and emerging dark spots. From the very beginning, the pearl has held a central place in the Guerlain galaxy. What age-old intuition and empirical formulas had sensed, the work carried out by Guerlain Research has proven by scientific experimentation and analysis. At the heart of one of the most precious pearls in the world, active ingredients were isolated that in 2011 gave birth to a new whitening line with a predestined name – Blanc de Perle. Entirely in line with the founder’s philosophy of “never compromising on quality”, Guerlain chose the Uwajima pearl, a treasure exclusively cultivated in the cold, tranquil waters of a bay in south-west Japan, a jewel renowned the world over for its incomparable whiteness and iridescence. Made up of thousands of layers of nacre to form a perfect sphere, the pearl glows with an intense and mysterious radiance, its “lustre”, which denotes its surface radiance, and “orient”, which measures deep luminosity and the way in which light is decomposed into subtle iridescent shades.
ADVANCED WHITE P.E.A.R.L. DROP WHITENING ESSENCE TWO MONTHS OF TREATMENT ALLOW YOU TO GAIN SEVEN YEARS ON DARK SPOTS Ultra-concentrated in the Advanced P.E.A.R.L. Complex, the line’s star Essence releases Melanin Control Technology’s whitening power day after day to reduce the intensity, size and number of existing dark spots, while limiting the process leading to future dark spots.
WHITE P.E.A.R.L. ESSENCE IN LOTION BRIGHTING LOTION The first whitening skincare step and the line’s first “essence in lotion”, this deliciously fresh lotion delivers an array of seductive powers to offer the complexion the radiant whiteness of pure, silky skin with a clear, healthy glow. Enriched in the Advanced P.E.A.R.L. Complex, it gently begins the Blanc de Perle routine, helping day after day to reduce the intensity of dark spots and counter dull skin. Refreshing the complexion, the active ingredients at the heart of its formula boost the skin’s microcirculation1 to deliver translucently pure, clear and luminous skin with a subtle healthy glow. Providing instant and lasting hydration with each application, it leaves the skin feeling soft, supple and silky. Skin-perfecting, it helps to tighten pores and refine skin texture.

WHITE P.E.A.R.L. SLEEPING CONCENTRATE WHITENING NIGHT CREAM An essential new step in the whitening ritual, this innovative night care, a comfortable and enveloping gel-cream balm, combines the properties of moisturising, whitening, regenerating and antioxidant skincare to make it the perfect night-time complement to the Essence. A key period in skin recovery, night is the best time to help to repair the visible signs of skin ageing and pigmentation damage induced each day by UV rays and environmental stress. While cell repair activity is at its peak at night, it also generates specific oxidative stress that helps to boost melanin production and darken the skin.
THE BEAUTY OF MAKE-UP
For smooth, even, long-lasting perfection: the Lasting Glow Pigment, derived from a combination of fine powders, interacts in an exceptional way with light and produces a powerful soft-focus effect to blur imperfections, smooth and even out the skin’s texture. Silica powder acts to preserve the flawless radiance of this pearly white complexion; its high absorbent power also helps to create a matte, long-lasting finish for smooth, perfect skin until evening.
POUDRE DE SOIE ILLUMINATING POWDER SILK SHIMMER To enhance the complexion with the most luminous of iridescent glows, Blanc de Perle reveals its first POUDRE DE SOIE, a subtle highlighter with a rosy evanescence – and an irresistible collector’s item History tells us that the most beautiful oriental courtesans cultivated a mysterious tradition each spring to maintain their faces’ radiance. Inspired by the radiant shimmer of their silk drapery and the iridescence of their pearl embroidery, they had discovered the beauty-enhancing power of a specific alliance: a blend of the purest silk and the rarest nacre, which revealed an incredible glow on the skin.
ESSENCE INFUSED BRIGHTENING FOUNDATION MOISTURE RETENTION SKIN REFINER Inspired by the pearl’s most precious qualities, its surface radiance, deep luminosity, and smooth, even perfection, Guerlain reveals the first BRIGHTENING FOUNDATION infused with Blanc de Perle’s skincare Essence. In the galaxy of Guerlain’s cosmetic pearls, this radical innovation combines the power of skincare and the beauty of make-up to recreate an immaculate, luminous, soft, even and pure complexion each day – a dazzling pearly white complexion.

SHISEIDO A RADIANT TOUCH LX TOTAL RADIANCE FOUNDATION Shiseido Future Solution Lx Total Radiance Foundation is the ultimate age-defying foundation for infinite beauty. It works in perfect synergy with Future Solution Lx skincare to create an exquisitely radiant finish. It retextures, lifts and brightens your skin, thanks to a formula that contains the brand’s exclusive Skingenecell 1P to counteract the appearance of future aging and 4MSK, an innovative brightening ingredient for a luminous, more even skin tone. Aura Radiance Power refines skin texture while enhancing your radiant complexion while Time Match Powder keeps the foundation in place all day long. It also fights against visible signs of aging, including loss of firmness, wrinkles, dark spots, dullness and large pores while maintain essential moisture for a long lasting healthy, brighter look.
SHISEIDO SHEER & PERFECT COMPACT Sheer and Perfect is a finely milled pressed-powder foundation that offers light coverage with an ultra-subtle glow. The shade range includes several options, spanning from fair to deep. Sheer and Perfect absorbs oil, at least in the short term, while imparting an understated radiance. If you have very oily skin and you’re looking for a powder to keep your skin matte, this isn’t for you, but those with normal to dry or combination skin will likely find the ultra-subtle luminous finish nice for a natural, youthful glow. Although this fragrance-free powder is on the translucent end of the coverage spectrum, it can be stippled over problem areas for more coverage without looking chalky or caked on. Not an easy feat to master, but Shiseido did! Likewise, we were pleased by how well Sheer and Perfect held up throughout the day, while also noting that it is easy to use for on-thego touch-ups. The broad-spectrum sun protection via an in-part titanium dioxide sunscreen is an added anti-aging bonus. If super sheer coverage with a hint of glow is what you want, then this delivers!

RUN 4 RICE THREE BRITISH WOMEN ON A MISSION BY VICKY ENEA, TRACEY MANZELL & SUE WARMAN
On Friday 13th of February, we three newcomers to the world of major running events, will somehow cross the finishing line at the Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Premier Half Marathon for charity. Two of us - Sue Warman and Tracey Mansell - will run the entire race, but Vicky Enea will walk (fast). Whatever our (vast) differences in terms of fitness and stamina, we are united in our goal to
SUE WARMAN – SPORTY TYPE: THE DOER WAS Until a few years ago, I didn’t run. Swimming, Pilates, cycling for picnics – yes, but the prospect of running never hooked me. Partly because I thought my body wasn’t the right shape and I thought my stamina was lacking. The magic that has happened is both those have evolved to be exactly right for running as a result of doing it.
run for The Lebanese Food Bank, an organization that distributes food parcels across Lebanon. Based in Beirut, we have initiated a project called Run4Rice, Legit4Lentils, Walk4Wheat and are asking people to sponsor us by either donating rice, lentils, flour, wheat, etc. for every kilometer completed, or by making a cash donation.

IS The training is at the core of life right now. There is no way around it – I have to put in the miles. The times are good. I am getting stronger. The few niggles this week are aches in my big toes, which might be due to the snowshoeing! Icing them and trying not to extrapolate it to full-blown arthritic decrepitude. You can get replacement knees, hips, ankles, bones, you know.
WILL BE Although all my effort is bent towards RAK, of course the NEXT event is lining itself up. Life does that. Another equal distance run, as part of an ironman relay, in the glorious Barcelona, circa mid-May is a good candidate. Then, on to the big one - the full marathon in Beirut in November. Can my little legs do it?!

RUN 4 RICE | THREE BRITISH WOMEN ON A MISSION
VICKY ENEA – SPORTY TYPE: THE DAWDLER PAST I have never been the sporty type – even at school I would very cleverly avoid all forms of exercise by hiding in the library. The exception to my no exercise rule was walking. Just enough to feel guilt-free of course. On the whole, I was rather proud of my sports-challenged lifestyle.
PRESENT
TRACEY MANSELL – SPORTY TYPE: THE DITHERER BEFORE Had free time. Could eat and drink what I liked. Could stagnate on the sofa, watch films back-to-back to my heart’s content, waste wile away my free time, fill it with idle contemplation. My life was my own.
THESE DAYS What life? Training, eating, training, eating…. somehow managing to fit in a full time job and walking the dog. Body is slowly giving up the battle to go on and my mind is doing EVERYTHING to try and hijack the training (really, any excuse not to run), and is constantly bombarding me with visuals of rest (faraway beaches, hammock, a good book) and FUN.
THE SUNNY FUTURE Rest. Lots of the above. Other delights…then maybe a new sportif project…well it would be a shame to stop now I’ve done all this training…A duathlon maybe or a sprint triathlon….for charity.
FEBRUARY 2015
Currently, I am anxious because this successful exercise-dodger is about to walk a half-marathon in the heat of Ras Al Khaimeh. “How has it come to this?” I routinely ask myself. Life these days revolves around organizing Run4Rice’s first fundraiser – a Grand Valentine Bazaar. My time is filled with emailing, attending gatherings and trying to persuade others to sponsor our project, so not much time to walk or train. I feel the actual race will be a real ‘challenge’ for me, to use a good sporting euphemism.
FUTURE I think it’s fair to say that, after RAK, I will be walking away from any future sporting challenges. But our Run4Rice initiative will be an ongoing project and we have fundraising ideas for the future with no finishing line in sight.
Run4Rice (www.run4rice.com) is organizing a Grand Valentine Bazaar Fundraiser on Saturday February 7th, from 2pm –6pm, at AltCity, Hamra - On sale will be Bric-a-Brac, Second-Hand Books, DVDs and Clothes, as well as special Valentine-themed Cakes and Cookies. BIG HEARTS | HELPING CHILDREN WITH THEIRS
“She was tired, and very skinny and didn’t have much energy like other kids. Of course we knew about her disease, we were very worried and scared, both for our child’s well-being and the financial costs that would ensure a healthy life for our girl.” says Mazen, Lama’s dad. She was only 3 years old when she underwent her first surgery. And in July 2014, Lama underwent her second treatment, a surgical repair, and that also was funded by the Brave Heart Fund.
SHE WAS TIRED, AND VERY SKINNY AND DIDN’T HAVE MUCH ENERGY LIKE OTHER KIDS With the help of the Brave Heart Fund, one of Lebanon’s only non-profit organizations dedicated to providing adequate funding to families with a child born with congenital heart disease and the multi-disciplinary team at the Children’s Heart Center (CHD) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), children born with a form of this disease have a chance to live a normal life. Started in November 2003, the Brave Heart Fund started as a charitable, grassroots initiative created by parents who had children suffering from the disease. Co-founder of the Brave Heart Fund, Joumana Ghandour Atallah, says over the years, since the organization started, they have funded over 2,500 surgeries. “There is no gray zone when it comes to the heart, if the child doesn’t get the trea tment needed, such as surgery, we might lose the child. That is what is so important about congenital heart disease for children, we are talking about a vital organ in the body that requires immediate attention,” Atallah says.
WORLDWIDE, FOR EVERY 100 BABIES BORN, ONE WILL BE BORN WITH A FORM OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE Worldwide, for every 100 babies born, one will be born with a form of congenital heart disease. In Lebanon alone, there are more than 600 babies born with the disease, about 400 of whom will require some form of surgery either early on or later on in childhood according to the Children’s Heart Center at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
FEBRUARY 2015
Director of the Children’s Heart Center at AUBMC, Dr. Fadi Bitar says congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital anomaly and is the leading cause of death in the first year of life. There are more than 35 types of CHD. The disease is an abnormality in the heart that can include anything from the most common heart defect, ventricular spetal defect (VSD )–, known as a “hole” in the heart, to hyrdroplastic, where the heart is underdeveloped. The latter, condition often requires the patient to have heart transplant or multiple surgeries performed within the first couple years of birth.

“When we heard about the surgery, we felt fear, we could not bare the pain. She was only three years old. Thank God and the whole team of AUB. I could never thank them enough, they helped us so much, they were amazing, I will never forget how supportive and good they were to us,” Mazen says. The Brave Heart Fund does not choose the patients who should receive the aid. The process is extensive and long in order to ensure the appropriate funds go to each family. First, a family pediatrician discovers the heart problem and refers the child to a center specialized in cardiac care. Once the family finds out what specific treatment their child needs, the family will know the surgery needed and then approach various organizations for assistance. According to Atallah, the Ministry of Health provides financial support to families who need the aid in order to pay for the surgery, but this aid only covers a portion of the total costs of the operations.
WHEN WE HEARD ABOUT THE SURGERY, WE FELT FEAR, WE COULD NOT BARE THE PAIN
“Frequencies of congenital heart disease are usually uniform throughout the world. In Lebanon, the most common form, VSD, is the same as in the United States,” says Bitar. As the case is with many diseases, early detection of congenital heart disease can lead to a better outcome for the baby and allows doctors to provide efficient and accurate treatment while also educating the parents, says Bitar. “If the foetus has a heart problem, then we educate the mom and dad and we deliver the baby at the tertiary center which is equipped to treat that baby when it is born,” Bitar says.

IF THE FOETUS HAS A HEART PROBLEM, THEN WE EDUCATE THE MOM AND DAD AND WE DELIVER THE BABY AT THE TERTIARY CENTER WHICH IS EQUIPPED TO TREAT THAT BABY WHEN IT IS BORN Early detection does not change lack of ability to pay for treatment though. Parents who have a child with congenital heart disease find it hard to digest the news while stressing about how to pay for the surgery. In the case of Mazen, it was too much to bear.

BIG HEARTS | HELPING CHILDREN WITH THEIRS
WHILE SAVING A CHILD’S LIFE IS AT FOREFRONT OF AUBMC MISSION, DR. BITAR SAYS IT DOESN’T COME WITHOUT CHALLENGES, THAT OFTEN OVERSHADOW EFFORTS ACCOMPLISHED BY HIS TEAM
“For instance, a family may qualify for support from the Ministry of Health, but still needs to fund a small part of the surgery. This amount is inaccessible to a large number of citizens. This is where Brave Heart kicks in. The fund helps patients who are in need financially. We have to cater to the neediest,” explains Atallah. Attallah says the family will be directed to social institution at AUB. Here she emphasizes there is no “wasta” (not on a who-you-know basis) or special treatment and each family is given a background check to ensure the money is going where it is most needed. “Brave Heart is a patient fund at AUBMC that is open to any child in need without any discrimination (as to religion, nationality , gender or other). Furthermore, children born to Lebanese mothers and non-Lebanese fathers do not benefit from government support, and we find it quite unacceptable to exclude any child.
“Dr Fadi Bitar was very helpful and reassuring. As soon as they told us of the first surgery, I was honest and I told him I couldn’t afford it. He reassured me and told me not to worry. Overall I had payed 60 000 LL. I don’t know how I would’ve coped without them,” explains Mazen. While saving a child’s life is the forefront of AUBMC’s mission, Dr. Bitar says it doesn’t come without challenges that often overshadow efforts accomplished by his team. He points out that maintaining and developing his cardiology team is one of the main challenges he is continually working on. “It is extremely important to develop a multidisciplinary team which includes the cardiologists, the surgeons, and the anesthesiologists nurses, and all other appropriate technology to get the best results. Now, as of today, the heart center is celebrating its 20th anniversary. We started in 1995 to 2015, we have really come along in these 20 years,” Bitar says proudly.
With vulnerable adults and children often caught in political, religious and social issues, Atallah emphasizes that when it comes to medical treatment, no child’s life should be jeopardized because of his or her background. “On a humanitarian level, all children deserve an equal chance to get medical treatment regardless of national or religious belonging,” Atallah says. Mazen emphasizes his gratefulness to the Brave Heart Fund and the AUBMC for assisting in the difficult time in his daughter’s life. When his daughter’s health was unknown, he turned to the only person who could provide comfort.

Because of the new technology and research conducted by researchers at AUBMC, Bitar has seen an increase in congenital heart disease detection. As the only center in Lebanon that provides comprehensive care for cardiac patients, the demand for care has increased naturally. “Our workload has increased and our financial burden is increasing and I can tell you, in the last two years we spent double the amount that we used to. People from all over the country are coming to us because of the treatment provided by the AUBMC team,” Bitar says. The Brave Heart Fund and the AUBMC equally share the financial burden that comes with being one of the top cardiac institutions in the region.
AS THE ONLY CENTER IN LEBANON THAT PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE CARE FOR CARDIAC PATIENTS, THE DEMAND FOR CARE HAS INCREASED NATURALLY “In the past 18 months, we have had a huge surge in the amount of surgeries performed and basically Brave Heart’s contribution to these surgeries have almost doubled from last year. It took a toll on our budget. We are not a rich fund in any way or form. We were ahead of our surgeries by six to nine months, which meant that every year we had to fundraise to bring in the money for the year.” Atallah says. As more children are diagnosed with congenital heart disease, the Brave Heart Fund and the AUBMC center are doing their best to provide adequate care and funding for each child who seeks treatment.
“Now that I’m telling my story, I can’t hold back the tears,” Mazen says as he starts to cry, “it gives me goosebumps. Our life has changed completely, and the hardest thing was to see fear in her eyes and her worries when anticipating the operation. We used to tell her ‘Don’t worry darling, it’s for your own good, you will feel better.’ We couldn’t tell anyone, you know how the society is, they talk too much and are judgmental. But Lama used to be thin and frail looking, now she is healthy and happy and we are very grateful.”

PORTOFINO ITALY Once a small fishing village, the town of Portofino in the Italian Riviera has become one of the country’s finest and most upmarket resort towns. Believed to have origins as a Roman town, Portofino is a popular yachting destination, but it is a great place for any relaxing and romantic holiday. A small and easily manageable place, Portofino is best explored on foot, and a relaxing afternoon walk down the waterfront, with its many cafés and restaurants, is a must. One of the most important historic sites is the sunken statue, Christ of the Abyss in the Bay of San Fruttuoso, although you will need to go scuba diving or snorkelling to see it. Castello Brown is another important attraction, a sixteenth century fortress which now serves as a museum offering some of the best views in town. The best way to get to Portofino is to fly to Genoa only 36 kilometres away.

HALLSTATT AUSTRIA If majestic mountains, clear blue lakes and a picture-perfect town in the heart of Austria appeals to you, you can’t go wrong with Hallstatt. Local attractions include the Cultural Heritage Museum and the morbid yet fascinating Bone House. The town itself is also a perfect place for some peace and quiet, and there are many boutique stores and cafés. Sleater-Kinney No Cities to Love With their first album in 10 years, Corin Turner, Janet Weiss, and Carrie Brownstein of SleaterKinny released No Cities to Love on January 20, 2015. The girl band started out in the 90’s as a riot grrl movement—projecting feminism ideas, and antiviolence against women while trying to be something different than every other girl band at the time. Sticking with the same themes in their complex songwriting, heavy instrumentation and shared vocal
features, Carrie Brownstein, the group’s guitarist and vocalist says they wanted to write this album with the same feeling and meaning as they would have when writing their first album. In an interview with NPR Music, Brownstein says their approach to feminism in their music was more confrontational because feminism was less talked about and she says now they want everyone to feel comfortable in any way they view feminism.
Lupe Fiasco Tetsuo-Youth In a recent interview with Billboard, Lupe Fiasco talked about the future of his career.“I think I had my peak and now I am coming down in relevancy.” For a rapper who is already selling himself short before the results of his latest and most likely his last album, it doesn’t provide reassurance to his fans that the album will be great or even good for that matter. Since his first release in 2006, Lupe Fiasco has had his share of mishaps from leaks of his songs before their releases to his fans storming the gates of the record brand— Atlantic. In his latest album, Tetsuo-Youth, Fiasco can
be described as being the realest he has been in all of his career. A brief listen to tracks on his album, topics such as porn, prison, corruption and death are all common themes. In his intro track, “Mural” he raps endlessly for nine minutes with no hook, but a combination of messages and observation about life and relationships. As a recent twitter post implies, Fiasco is signing off from the public eye for the last time, but as with any rapper in the industry, any fan, hater or listener should take it with a grain of salt and enjoy this rapper’s potentially last time.
Above & Beyond We’re all We Need After much anticipation, Above & Beyond, an English electronic dance music, group released a studio album We Are All We Need. Old and new fans alike already have had a preview of the groups music with 16 tracks that have been unleashed in full. With the growing popularity of new tech and house music, Above & Beyond still manages to produce some songs that would make any dull, Monday morning commute a little brighter. Featuring Zoe Johnston,
the song “We are all we need” is upbeat, with a resemblance of tech music while still maintaining a soft, but fast paced rhythm throughout. One major change from the group’s previous album, Group Therapy to We Are All We Need is the consistent overall tone of the album. The current album is more uplifting than its predecessor. With still more tracks that have not been heard by the public, fans will have some surprises while listening to the album.
Bjork Vulnicura Bjork is the Icelandic alternative singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is as much avant garde of music as Alexander McQueen in the avant garde of fashion. This artist can’t be summed up in a few sentences as each track is more diverse than the next, while still coming back to her signature heart bearing and pastoral voice. In Vulnicura the heartbreak album she just released at the start of 2015, offers an array of emotions from love and anger to reflection and tones of respect. With each album Bjork makes, she takes her fans on a trip to another fantastical
134 | R A G M A G | www.ragmag.co
universe—her own world. The theme of this album is her break up with longtime partner and fellow artist, Matthew Barney. Throughout Vulnicura, she exposes her candor with raw emotions. In the third song, “History of Touches” she reminisces about her intimacy with Barney and says “Every single fuck we had together is in a wondrous time-lapse with us here at this moment.”As much as this record replays her former relationship, it also highlights an awakening inside Bjork. This album may be one of the most tender-hearted, intimate pieces of work done by Bjork.

American Sniper | 134 mins | Action, Biography, Drama Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner American Sniper may be quickly turning into the most politically controversial movie to hit the box office this Oscar season. This movie highlights a war, argued by many as one of the most controversial and unpopular wars in American history, through the experience of Chris Kyle, who is one of the most skilled American snipers in the history of the U.S. Military. As he rotates through four tours of duty, Kyle must deal with the high stress levels that comes with the jobs while also dealing with the toll it takes on his relationship with his wife and children. Bradley Cooper , who normally can be seen in
comedies, takes on this challenging role as Chris Kyle. Critics say the film glorifies a murderer and comes at a time where the region, victims and the people are still reeling with the effects the war had on them and future generations to come. American Sniper is up for Best Picture and Bradley Cooper is nominated for Actor in a Leading role. Screenwriter, James Hall claims he just wrote the film off a scarred solider, not a political agenda. To decide if this film is just another Hollywood blockbuster sensationalizing a war or if it hits to close to home, one must check it out.

This movie tests the limits and boundaries of the industry, what a filmmaker can create and the disciplined performance of a cast. Film- maker, Richard Linklater tests the limits of himself and the casts involved in this moving, and beautifully created film. Over the course of 12 years, a young boy named Mason experiences the challenges and triumphs of childhood. Mason’s parents who are divorced face their own set of challenges throughout the film. Mason, along with his sister
Samantha, experience navigating the world in which the strengths and frailties of adults shape their own lives. The way Linklater filmed this movie is what makes it a must see film worthy of winning all six Oscar nominations. The director filmed this movie over the course of 12 years in order to get a real glimpse of life as a boy growing into his teenage years. While watching this film, the viewer forgets it is movie and becomes entrenched into the development of this young boy’s life.
The Grand Budapest Hotel | 100 mins | Adventure, Comedy Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric In Director Wes Anderson’s new comedy, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, seeps with issues of death, love and despair while playing on the notes of nostalgia. As it is with many of Wes Anderson’s films, the comedy is often either subtle with comedic relief or completely over the top that would cause the viewer’s stomach pain not to laugh. As the owner of a once-luxurious Alpine Hotel relates its history to a visiting author, he describes his youth to the fascinated author as a lobby boy at the Grand Budapest Hotel, where he was

Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody and Saoirse Ronan in this years highly anticipated comedy. From time to time, everybody needs a little relief through humor. By the end of this film, you are sure to leave the cinema crying with tears of joy and a reason to travel to Budapest for a night’s stay at the Grand Budapest Hotel.

Unnecessary Woman Rabih Alameddine Why you should read this book
Reveals Beirut’s beauties and horrors.
One of Beirut’s most celebrated voices, Rabih Alameddine follows his international bestseller The Hakawati, with a heartrending novel that celebrates the singular life of an obsessive introvert, revealing Beirut’s beauties and horrors along the way. Aliya Sohbi lives alone in her Beirut apartment surrounded by stockpiles of books. Godless, fatherless, divorced and childless. Aaliya is her family’s “unnecessary appendage and is seen by some readers as an angry
woman, that has walled herself in to avoid the nasty consequences of being angry amid armed and angry men. She preserves her sanity by translating her beloved books, the beauties of which she renders into the sinuous sonorous rhythms of Arabic. And then, like she does with herself, she packages them up and puts them away. Once this book is read, Aaliya will remain with you for a while. There is a bit of her in every one of us.
Betrayed Lisa Scotline
Why you should read this book
You will eagerly be turning pages.
The mystery itself is interesting, and the reader does feel a connection to Judy and her family. There was lots of action and suspense and questions to be answered throughout the story. Lawyer and defender of the underdog Judy Carrier, finds herself with a plate full of trouble. Judy is a great character. She manages to get caught up within her law firm’s quest for cases that earn money, her own ethical views, and a secret held by
her mother and her aunt. The mystery of Judy’s aunt’s friend Iris Juarez takes many twists and turns and kept me eagerly turning pages to find out what would happen next. That, paired with the mystery Judy must solve in her own life, made “Betrayed”. The twists continue through to the very end of the book and one development means things are going to get really interesting. If you are into legal mysteries then this is the one for you.
Ugly Girl Lindsay Hunter Why you should read this book
This book does not leave you with the warm fuzzies.
Lindsay Hunter is the kind of fearless writer that doesn’t give a shit about bestseller lists and happy ending. This novel will show you all sorts of long-form narrative skills Hunter has in her arsenal. This book does not leave you with the warm fuzzies and it runs your emotions through the ground. At some point in your life some of these characters have been in and out of yor life. You know all of these characters. You’ve gone to school with them,
they’re “those” neighbors, or the family who only stare at you while you walk by. It’s a mixture of humor with profound sadness. She revels in the sad undertow of her lost characters’ lives and if you decide you can handle it, you’ll revel in it too. It’s so unapologetic that it becomes shake-your-head funny. And despite - or maybe because of - its blunt, hurried ending, you’ve just got to take some deep breaths when it’s over.

HELP ME WITH MY RAGGED PROBLEMS My birthday has come and gone and my husband completely forgot about it. Granted his father is not well due to a newly found illness. But it has really upset me. How could I bring this up without sounding selfish? Jeanne, 34
DEAR JEANNE,
Well I understand fully where you are coming from, but from where I stand, i can also identify with your husband. When we are facing problems, especially with the illness of someone we love, we tend not to think straight and are always preoccupied with the situation at hand. The fact that you are married, means that you two are close enough to talk about anything and open up to each other. I say, you should be honest and tell him what you are feeling, but emphasize on the fact that you understand what he is going through and that you support him completely no matter what and this will not affect your relationship. You don’t want to add problems and make him feel worse. I always say communication is the key to any relationship.
My whole life I have seen myself as overweight and i am always struggling with trying to stay skinny. My friends and family beg to differ and are always on my back about how I need to eat. One day, in summer my friend showed me a headless photo of a girl, which in my point of view looked anorexic. She asked me what I thought of this girl’s body and I replied that she is way too skinny and disturbing. When she zoomed the picture out, I was shocked that it was a photo taken of me not long ago. I got the point that my friend was making but I’m confused why I don’t see this in the mirror? Brianna, 24
DEAR BRIANNA,
Recently, more and more women are feeling this way. The rate of eating disorders and complexes are increasing drastically. Always keep in mind that every woman is unique in her own way. No matter what anyone tells you and no matter how hard they try to convince you that you should stop losing weight, it would not matter. The solution relies in your hands: why do you portray yourself as being overweight? When did it start? What makes you uncomfortable? Ask yourself why you got to where you are today. You should find the cause in order to solve it and get it over with once and for all. If things are as bad as I think they are, then you definitely need to seek professional help; there is nothing wrong with that. The most important thing is to change the way YOU perceive yourself and not what other people think. Keep in mind that if you keep on losing weight, it WILL cause health problems and you will have to face severe consequences.

I recently graduated university. With a major that was purely to please the parents. Now that I have finished studying it is time for me to find work but I am not too keen to find a job as it bores me to death. My heart lies in another field. How do I break this to my parents without breaking their heart? Wael, 22
DEAR WAEL,
I have a history of personal issues with both my family and friends, some of which are ongoing. I find myself, on a daily basis, re-living past conversations and events and getting upset by thinking of things I could have said or how I could have managed the situation. And this ruins my mood or even my whole day. How could I stop allowing this to happen to me as I find my life slipping by and I am dwelling on what could have been?
My heart seriously goes out to you. If you are trapped in this, I am wondering what else would you trap yourself in to please others eventhough they are your parents. This is by no means a joke. You need to speak to them as soon as possible, and open up. This is a lifetime decision, and it will dictate how the rest of your life goes. I can’t stress how important this is, it is your life that you are shaping, it is your future that is at stake. Your parents want you to be happy, successful and comfortable in whatever you are doing. You should be honest with them and tell them what your plans are for your future and I am sure they will support you completely. Whatever you end up doing make sure you are doing it from the heart. Best of Luck!
Sherine, 30
DEAR SHERINE,
We all face problems with family and friends, sometimes it goes our way and sometimes it doesn’t. Everyone deals with things differently. On the spot, we tend to think with our heart and emotions, but when it all ends and we calm down, we take a step back and think about what happened and this is where the brain takes over and we start thinking more clearly. This leads to finding better solutions to how we deal with things. This being said we start regretting the way we reacted and wished we had done something else instead. Sometimes you should just let it go completely, keeping in mind that some things are better left unsaid. The priority is for you to be comfortable with your decisions and not let anything bother you. A word of advice, try counting to 10 next time.
SHE HAS MORE FUN WITH OTHERS THAN SHE DOES WITH ME §
My fiancé and I are newly engaged. Just like us, all our family and friends are as excited. My issue is that they are so excited that we are now pressured to get married by summer 2015 but my fiancé and I have not even set a date and we are not ready to set the date yet. How could we get them all off our backs without hurting their feeling? Clara, 24
DEAR CLARA,
Yep, engagements and marriages sometimes cause more hassle than joy. Honesty is the best policy. Be very honest, direct and tell them upfront that both of you are just not ready to get married yet and that you feel pressured. This is the time where a girl needs her family’s support. When the time comes you want them all to be involved, just not now and not in this way. Keep on a open mind that they love you and they want you to be happy and comfortable with your decision. I am sure they just got a bit over excited.

Here goes RAGMAG, I am a typical male who up until recently have felt that I was in a perfect marriage – I have my friends and she has hers. We recently went on holiday together and it struck me that my wife has more to say to others than me, she has more fun with others than she does with me. This reminded me in a way of the girl I married! How can I get my relationship back on track? Jacques, 41
DEAR JACQUES,
Well for once I have received a somewhat of a positive letter, and I am happy that someone is willing to build rather than break. Yes every couple has their ups and downs. I am glad that you have noticed your differences and want to fix things. My advice Jacques, is simple and straight – Communication. You obviously still love each other. Like the saying goes, loves conquers all! Wine and Dine her and open your heart. You will be happily surprised.

ZODIAC FORECASTS FROM JONATHAN CAINER
February 2015 AS THE MONTH GOES BY, THE OUTLOOK GETS BRIGHTER FOR US ALL. I DON’T MEAN TO IMPLY THAT FEBRUARY’S FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS WILL INEVITABLY BE DISAPPOINTING. IT’S MORE THAT, VIA A RETROGRADE JUPITER AND MERCURY, THE HEAVENS ARE POSING A COSMIC CONUNDRUM. AS INDIVIDUALS (AND AS NATIONS) WE ARE GLIMPSING CLUES ABOUT OUR FUTURE. MANY OF THESE SEEM MORE BAFFLING THAN INSPIRING. THE HARDER SOME OF US THINK, THE GREATER THE HEADACHE WE GIVE OURSELVES. LATER IN THE MONTH, WE WILL GET CLEARER, MORE HOPEFUL INDICATIONS OF WHAT LIES AHEAD AND WILL WONDER WHY WE WERE SO WORRIED.

February 20 - March 20 You are still recovering from a year in which life turned you one way round, then another. In 2014, you were full of pride one moment; doubt the next. You have gone up and down like a yo-yo or a roller-coaster. And it seems you still aren’t yet back on a level. All that, though, is fair enough (you feel), as long as it has been getting you somewhere. What you would hate to feel is that it has all been a waste of time and effort. Don’t even think that way. You are closer than you think, in February, to proof that you have made enlightened choices.

There is a reason why you seem to be reliving old dramas, rediscovering old memories, revisiting old experiences. It’s partly because Mercury has been retrograde. It is also because you are reaching a turning point. You can soon make a choice that will lead you to one of several different futures. You need, as you approach these, to be fully informed by all that you have learned from life so far - and not to have your judgement clouded by a fear that stems from events long ago. You can go beyond these in February.
March 21 - April 20 What do you really feel? If you aren’t sure already, you will find out soon enough. Your instincts are strong. That is why your deepest, most intense emotions are being released and revealed. In the process, you are starting to question the organisations and institutions to which you ‘belong’ - and you are realising that you can no longer allow yourself to be trapped by traditions and expectations that you have outgrown. Just when you think it is all getting to be too much to cope with, in February, you will see a change.

April 21 - May 21 There are always clues, even to the best-kept secrets. If people want to know the truth, there will always be hints. Often, though, people really don’t want to see them. They simply want corroboration of their assumptions or confirmation of their belief. Even when the truth is staring them right in the face, they will tend to ignore it because it does not quite fit in with their idea of what the truth should be. Whether you are looking for something or hoping to keep up a cover... or both, keep that in mind this month.
May 22 - June 22 Often, we experience a great sense of exhilaration and confidence as we hurtle towards the edge of a cliff. Often, too, we feel nothing but anxiety and apprehension whilst making some of the smartest moves of our life. Recent events have left you wondering where you really stand with someone or something. Too much in your world seems unsettled and precarious. But none of that can be seen as a sure sign that there is anything wrong. In February, just trust what inspires you, and question whatever worries you.
June 23 - July 23 You have long understood the power of positive thought. That’s why you always leave room in your heart for a little hope. There are more things in the universe than any of us understand but if we put up too many barriers, we may not see opportunities, even when they arise. February’s positive change doesn’t need to make total sense. It is enough that it exists. Let that encouragement awake fresh enthusiasm and you will soon see an old situation in a new light. Then you will see how to solve a problem.

July 24 - August 23 ‘Think of yourself as rich,’ they say, ‘and wealth will make its way to you.’ It is not, of course, quite so simple. But there is an element of truth in this advice. Certainly, if you focus only on how poor you feel, you will become more conscious of your limitations than of your opportunities. We can say much the same about love and companionship. Those who feel that they have plenty to give are rarely short of someone to give it to. Jupiter remains in your sign. Whatever you lack, you can gain.
August 24 - September 23 You are not wearing blinkers. You do not have a restricted view. Or might you have been looking out from within a helmet for so long that you have forgotten what it feels like to enjoy full peripheral vision? Recent events have left you feeling as if an aspiration can never be fulfilled or a dream cannot turn into a reality. What can truly justify this disappointing view? Nothing! You are merely interpreting a set of signals pessimistically. Seek a broader view in February, and you will yet become highly inspired.
September 24 - October 23 Never apologise, never explain. This was once a favourite motto of many who held a position of power and authority. They felt that to acknowledge an error was to draw attention to it. They decided, ‘least said, soonest mended’. This policy has now been broadly discredited but there are still times when we all talk too much, think too much and allow too much of the past to taint the present. Don’t pick over the bones of some old, stressful, experience in February. Let it lie and move on to a happier future.

October 24 - November 22 What’s the difference between a sensible idea and a stupid idea? Often, it is the implementation. Some remarkably bad ideas have been carried out very successfully in the past. And some thoroughly brilliant notions have sunk without a trace. Enthusiasm counts for a great deal. So too does application. When these two qualities are simultaneously in evidence, it is easy to make tosh seem posh. Or to put a gloss on dross. But if, in February, you use your discrimination, you will make some triumphantly right and wise choices.
November 23 - December Is that a fairy, sitting on your shoulder? Or is it a guardian angel, hovering over your head? Maybe it’s a wish-granting leprechaun, an ancient Tibetan or a spirit guide from the medicine wheel. In February something will look after you. You are being offered support, succour and sustenance, some of which may take a decidedly unambiguous physical form. I’m not promising miracles. There may be ups as well as downs. But the ups will be real. They will last much longer and prove far more important than any downs!
December 22 - January 20 Much depends on how the ball is attached to the chain. With the right kind of metal harness, it can be made to rotate and that, in turn, reduces the stress of having to drag it along behind you. There are some who insist that by throwing the ball forward and allowing it to roll, they can effectively create a momentum by which they get from A to B much faster. Perhaps you like what’s anchoring you now. Perhaps you will like what could anchor you in February. But if you want to be free of it - you definitely have that chance!
