Welcome to the Autumn edition of Update, the all-new Learning Resources magazine. Each section is packed full of useful tips and resources to help you with your studies, assignments and research. The magazine is split into several sections, each focusing on a different curriculum area. We also have a general information section for resources and tips which could help everyone in the college. Dudley College has invested in the latest equipment to help you succeed with us. Those students who are 19+ and eligible for LSF can now borrow equipment free of charge. If you are unsure if you can access this service, please speak to the RBL staff or the Student Finance Team. LIBRARIES

Athens Athens gives you access to a wide range of e-resources paid for by the college. You can read books or journals online and access several databases. Youâ€&#x;ll need to set up an account in college but once thatâ€&#x;s done, you can access everything from anywhere with an internet connection. Follow these instructions or ask a member of library staff to set up an account today! Click here: www.athens.ac.uk

Now click Self-Register

Enter username: dudselfreg and password: password1 Click on Login and fill out the form that now appears. You only need to complete part one. Make sure you create a password that contains letters and numbers and is at least 6 characters long. Now click submit at the bottom of the page. An email will be sent to you with your login details.

Kindles New for 2011! Broadway Library has 4 Amazon Kindles which you can borrow for a week. Each Kindle is loaded with the latest fiction and other useful resources. Please ask at the Issue Desk if you would like to borrow one.

LEARNING RESOURCES Live@EDU We have teamed up with Microsoft to bring you the Live@EDU service. This service gives you: A Dudley College e-mail account with 10GB inbox. 25GB of password-protected online storage (SkyDrive) for you to store your work and files. Online versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for you to use for free. A range of other communication tools and useful services. Every student is given a Live@Edu account for free and you can access it from anywhere. To access Live@EDU, visit www.dudley.ac.uk and follow the onscreen instructions. BUSINESS AND COMPUTING

We have several journals available in the library relevant for Business and I.T. students:

Current copies are available from the stand by the window in Broadway Library. Older copies can be borrowed - youâ€&#x;ll find them by the Enquiry Desk. Ask a member of library staff for more titles or a list of all the

journals we have.

These titles are available as e-books. You can view them through Athens - see page 4 for details.

CCESS AND H.E.

LEARNING RESOURCES Higher Education Room. The HE room is located in Broadway Library and is available, while the library is open, as a drop-in centre for those students studying HNC, HND and Higher Education courses. Students can get the door accesscode from their tutors. This room has 12 computers, a printer and a smart board and projector as well as an area for group work. Paper for the printer can be bought from the library at 2p a sheet. If any help is needed please talk to the library staff. Please note: This room is not available for class bookings as it is a dropin centre only.

7 Access to Higher Education The Health News Digest is a weekly collection of health-related news and articles in the weekly media, new publications of interest and press releases from the Department of Health. It is produced by the NHS and distributed to various libraries in the local area. A print-out of this digest can be found at Castle View Library and an electronic version can be found on Blackboard. If you are interested in seeing it and it is not available on Blackboard, please talk to your tutor.

There is a collection of books held at Broadway Library created by Peter Dornan for Access students. These include books on social policy, social welfare and sociology. There are also GCSE maths books and some English titles available. Please ask your tutor if you are eligible to borrow from this collection.


CONSTRUCTION, ENGINEERING

New e-books: E-books can be accessed online at college or at home. Here‟s a selection of new titles relevant to Construction, Engineering and Motor Vehicle. They‟re all available on ebrary on Athens. You‟ll need to have an Athens account to read them - details of how to register are on page 4.

Journals and magazines: You can find up-to-date information in these journals. Theyâ€&#x;re all kept at Broadway Library. You can read current copies in the library and also borrow older copies for a week. Ask a member of library staff for more information.


FOUNDATION STUDIES

In the RBL we have some specialist software: Dialang will help you measure how good you are at reading, listening, writing, vocabulary and grammar and can help you improve. It can also help you to assess and understand your own language abilities. Ask at the desk if you want to have a go.

Book reading for all levels: We have books available for all levels of reading in the libraries. Our Easy Readers range from Elementary to Upper-Intermediate. Many are also available with a CD so you can listen while you read.

You can find all the English language books and packs at the far end of Broadway Library in Bay 26 and in Bay 4 at Castle View Library. We have a dedicated Literacy and Numeracy section at the far end of Mons Hill Library as well as Easy Readers with the Fiction section.

LEARNING RESOURCES BBC Skillswise

BBC Skillswise is a free-to-access website for adult numeracy and literacy tutors and students. It contains printable worksheets and factsheets and online games, videos and quizzes that can be used in class or by students at home. They also cover Entry 3 and Level 1 of the Skills for Life numeracy and literacy core curricula.

SPORTS STUDIES

Sports Injuries This website is designed to provide information for patients and medical professionals on shoulder and elbow disorders and injuries. Information is available on modern treatments, rehabilitation and expected surgical outcomes. All articles added to the website including medical content are written by medical professionals. Sources for reference material include medical textbooks, clinical and scientific journals and clinical audits. There is also an app available to download with all the information available from the website.

HAIR AND BEAUTY

Hairdressing Videos Here at Dudley College, we subscribe to a service called Athens (please see page 4 for more details on how to sign up). One great feature is a website called „Hairdressing Trainingâ€&#x; which can be found on the left hand column once you have logged in.

This website has plenty of content to help you with your hairdressing course at Dudley College. It includes handy step-by-step instruction guides and videos on many different haircuts and styles.
