THE SPONSORS MEET THE SPONSORS OF THE RAILSTAFF AWARDS 2016

ASSOCIATE SPONSOR Addleshaw Goddard’s transport team is recognised as one of the most experienced in the sector, with key expertise across a range of transport projects both in the UK and overseas. High profile issues such as HS2, airport expansion in the South East, the ‘Northern hub’ and increasingly congested motorways have put the transport sector at the centre of the debate about the UK’s future development. There is general acceptance of transport’s pivotal role as a driver of economic growth. Widespread recognition, too, of the need for joined-up, multi-modal transport strategies that enable people and goods to get where they need to be quickly and efficiently, while helping cities to achieve their potential as dynamic business hubs. Securing funding for transport projects is a major challenge for businesses around the globe; for large-scale projects which also have multiple stakeholders and regulatory and compliance issues, the task can seem daunting. The AG transport team understands the issues clients face and has strong in-depth knowledge in the transport sector both nationally and internationally, ensuring that clients are properly supported at every stage of their project. EXPERTISE Our transport team includes a broad range of experts who are experienced in advising clients across a wide range of areas.

RAIL We have a dedicated rail team that is acting for both public and private sector clients on some of the most complex and high profile projects in the marketplace. Providing genuine market insight and commerciality in addition to technical excellence is at the heart of the service we provide. The Group has detailed experience in all key sub-sectors of the rail industry including: signaling systems, rolling stock procurement and leasing, and franchise/concession (both bid side and procuring authority side). The work the team undertakes includes some of the most complex and groundbreaking projects in the market as well as on more day to day matters such as track, station and depot access. This means we can cover all of our client requirements and form long lasting relationships that drive efficiency. A few examples of our experience includes advising: The DfT on both the Intercity West Coast and West Midlands franchise competitions. On Wessex deep alliance, the £5.4 billion Intercity Express Programme and the ETCS signaling programme. Hitachi Rail Europe on the supply and maintenance for new fleet of AT300 bi-mode trains to First Group for the Transpennine Express franchise.

ASSOCIATE SPONSOR The Railway Industry Association is the body that represents UK-based suppliers to the railway industry, with a focus of engagement with key clients and government. We provide a range of services to our 200 member companies, who include

6

OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE AWARD Since the early 1990s, RailSport has been encouraging railway staff to reignite their long-held hopes of sporting glory and compete to be crowned the industry’s best. The tournament, which since its opening weekend has welcomed thousands of competitors from around the rail industry, was established by the British Rail Staff Association. BR was becoming more attuned with health and wellbeing issues and set about creating the competition, hiring a full-time RailSport manager to oversee the organisation of the event.

Wesley Bent and Luke Dunbavin MPI Ltd At Walthamstow Central London Underground station a member of the public fell down a flight of stairs and was seriously injured. Wesley and Luke contacted the emergency services and administered first aid to the injured person until the emergency services arrived at the scene. They did this without question, acted professionally and promoted the focus on team work.

SIGNALLING AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS PERSON OR TEAM OF THE YEAR Westermo design and manufacture robust data communication devices for harsh environments. We supply products that provide the network communication infrastructure, derived from proven commercial technology, for control and monitoring systems that are used in mission critical solutions where commercial grade products are not sufficiently resilient. A global player in train and trackside networks Westermo was established in 1975. The head office is located 100 miles southwest of Stockholm in Sweden. Over the past three decades Westermo has grown with sales and support units being established in Sweden, UK, Germany, France, Singapore, North America and China as well as partners in many other countries of the world.

Over its long history Westermo has evolved from supplying RS232 line drivers and then to DIN rail mounted tele-modems. With the advent of Ethernet as the de facto standard for data communications in many industries, Westermo developed an extensive range of robust Ethernet switches and routers. All Westermo products are designed to operate in the kind of harsh environments located on the trackside and many of these devices carry the “Network Rail Acceptance”. Westermo also has its own expert team for the specialist sector of train networks. It doesn’t end after 2 years either – we will continue to support you by providing the tools and experience needed to achieve Chartered Status in your chosen field.

STATION STAFF OF THE YEAR Helping to make a difference TBF is here to support those who work in the public transport industry in Great Britain when they are in need, hardship or distress. Almost anyone who works in the industry may join TBF, which is a registered charity (registered in England and Wales, 1160901) and be eligible for help. We have members in most major public transport companies and enjoy support from all the main transport unions. We are a membership charity and to become a member you must work in the public transport industry.

Michael Atherton Northern Rail Mike starts his shift at 6am but you will regularly find him there early, making sure his station is clean, safe and a pleasant environment for customers. During one late shift, Mike sprang into action to aid a customer in a wheelchair. She had lost her purse and so Mike spoke with her, before phoning for a taxi and paying for the fare.

Graham Large Northern Rail Graham works on one of the line’s busiest stations and has to cope with a multitude of things on a daily basis, including a high passenger turnover and short form trains.

Michael Brady Northern Rail Michael consistently provides passengers with excellent customer service. Numerous letters of thanks have earned him recognition from the company’s managing director.

20

RSA_Main-BROCHURE_2016_A4-v5.indd 20

We have helped thousands of members in times of need or hardship and offer an extensive range of benefits to the member, their partner and dependent children for just £1 a week. TBF was originally established to help families of London public transport workers serving in the First World War. A permanent trust was set up in 1923 and we have been helping public transport workers for over 90 years. In recent years we have shown extensive growth nationally and we have members in most parts of England, Scotland and Wales.

Rhys Jackson Abellio Greater Anglia Rhys is friendly and approachable and knows the rail timetables like the back of his hand. On one occasion he helped a commuter carry their luggage after they fell and hurt their ankle. He then waited for a taxi with them and paid the fare himself.

Anne Ross Southeastern Anne is the “pinnacle” of everything Southeastern expects from its employees, said her nominator Lee Fox. She is never off sick, is never late and always offers to help colleagues in need.

Vivienne Rowley Northern Rail No job is too big or small for Vivienne. She is always willing to make sure that the staff are happy and that the station runs smoothly and effectively. She is a real team player with excellent customer service - a positive influence on staff morale.

DEPOT TEAM OF THE YEAR Seaton Rail is located in the seaside resort of Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire. We provide a complete track safety management service including Possession Planning, Work Package Planning, and Safe System of Work Planning and have full UK nationwide coverage of contingent Labour, On Track Protection and Warning Services and Track Safety training and assessments. The company was formed in January 1995 to provide Possession Planning and Work Package Planning to specialised organisations requiring track access to Network Rail’s controlled Infrastructure. A Safe System of Work planning service was introduced in 2002 following the mandatory requirements of the Network Rail standard ‘Safety of People working On or Near the Line’ (RIMINI). In 2008 we expanded our services to include the supply of Contingent Labour and On Track Protection and Warning Services more recently in 2012 we were accredited by the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR) as a Network Rail approved Track Safety Training and Assessment Provider delivering Track Safety Training and Workplace Assessments to both internal and external track safety personal.

Workington Train Crew Depot Northern Rail Workington Depot’s nomination recognises the work its team has put in to brighten up Workington station. Staff at the depot have installed hanging baskets and flower beds to add a bit of colour to the station and improve the station environment for passengers.

Guildford Rail Community Team – White and Woods South West Trains Community officers Woods and White stepped in to help a distressed woman at Farnham station in Surrey during one of their routine patrols. The woman had come to the station planning to take her own life. Thanks to the officers’ intervention, she was kept safe before BTP officers arrived to assist.

RSA_Main-BROCHURE_2016_A4-v5.indd 44

In 2012 we expanded our services even further, and became accredited by NSAR (National Skills Academy for Rail) to provide Safety Critical Workplace assessments. Further expansion in 2014 saw the opening our first training centre in Bridlington, Where we deliver Track Safety training from PTS up to Engineering Supervisor, other courses we offer include Health and Safety, First Aid, Fire Safety, Customer Service, Food Safety, Management Skills and Assessor Training. To supplement our training we also provide Network Rail Drugs and Alcohol screenings. Our one stop shop approach to track safety management is what the rail industry has been missing for a long time. The rail industry requires qualified and experienced staff to assess and resource the needs of individual clients on a project to project basis. We offer dedicated industry specialists to resource and supply experienced personnel that match clients’ bespoke requirements to ensure the client and their project receive the attention and ongoing support that optimise ‘best practice’ working.

Mark Veness S&C South Alliance Mark Veness and his team helped to deliver Network Rail’s complex Christmas works programme at Purley successfully and under immense media pressure.

Laira Depot Shunting Team Great Western Railway Acknowledged as one of the most dangerous jobs on the railway, the shunting team at Great Western’s Laira Depot are the company’s unsung heroes. Ensuring the trains are cleaned, properly maintained and returned to service on time, the team are essential to the quality and reliability of trains on the route.

MTR Crossrail Maintenance Team MTR Crossrail Within just three months of being established, the maintenance team implemented new maintenance management software and developed new procedures to prepare for mobilisation in May 2015. Shortly after that, the team completed a full fleet refreshment programme. These are just a couple of examples of the efforts which have led to a huge improvement in passenger satisfaction.

Fatality Cleaning Team Streatham Hill Southern Railway When a fatality occurs on the railway, aside from the obvious impact it has on family and friends, it can have a significant knock-on effect to services. The fatality cleaning team of Dermuit O’Reilly, Steve Allen, Simon Hunt, Phillip Adane and Danny Potter do an amazing job of carefully and respectfully cleaning any remains, which can also include livestock and wild animals, to get the railway reopened and operational.

Wayne McDonald Virgin Trains For the last six years, Wayne and his colleague Andy Partington have been working hard to replace a lost war memorial at Manchester Piccadilly station. For years they have gathered information of the lost soldiers from the North West Railways who gave their lives to the country, spoke with relatives, researched individuals, pushed for funding and never gave up when they were faced with challenges of planning permission and working with external companies to make this happen. On May 4, 2016, they organised a presentation ceremony which received wide local press interest, with Michael Portillo unveiling the memorial itself.

Andrew Reid

Scott Paton

Great Western Railway

Abellio Greater Anglia

In April, shortly after beginning his shift, Andrew physically intervened to prevent a distressed man from taking his life on the railway. Andrew remained calm in a challenging situation and was able to help the man contact friends and receive the support he needed.

Whilst attending a meeting with Network Rail regarding trespass, a man walked on to the track with the intention of ending his life. Scott acted quickly, leading the gentleman off the track to the platform. As well as liaising with emergency services, Scott both counselled and diffused the situation, acting with empathy while remaining professional.

Tobias Buck Southeastern Tobias, a member of platform staff at a station in South London, provided comfort to a man thought to have been visiting the station to take his own life. He was able to remind the man of the positive things in his life before walking him home to his family.

Janet Clark Network Rail Janet works as the community safety manager on the London North Western Route. She works tirelessly with schools, youth groups and charities to deliver briefings to children to help them understand the dangers associated with a live railway.

Lee Klingenspor Land Sheriffs Lee has been involved in six lifesaving interventions in the last year. On one occasion, Lee and his colleague, Yaya, spotted a young woman sat on the edge of a platform. They immediately made their way to her and, using their Samaritans training, engaged her in a conversation. This was a particularly sensitive and difficult intervention, but the two men were able to quickly move her to a place of safety and hand her over to the British Transport Police (BTP).

Yaya Shah Land Sheriffs Arriving at an incident, Yaya and his co-worker, Lee, spotted a young woman sat on the edge of a platform. Using their Samaritans training, they engaged her in conversation. Despite being a sensitive intervention, Yaya and his colleague were quickly able to get the woman to safety before putting her in the care of BTP officers.

Liam-Khan Casey Merseyrail In May, Liam approached a male who was acting oddly on his train. Liam sat with the man, discussing the man’s time in the Armed Forces, and gave the man some details about a free charity that helps ex-servicemen. He later ensured the man was met by staff at his station.

Robert Newbold

Aaron Dunbar

London Midland

Aaron was alerted to an issue with an intoxicated customer on board a train. They arranged for BTP to attend and in the meantime took the decision to close the doors of the train to keep the gentleman safe. They engaged the man in conversation, offering empathy and understanding.

Whilst working on a local service in July, Robert noticed a young man standing on the rail side ledge of a station over bridge. Robert quickly made a call to get all lines blocked. He then engaged the man in conversation and was able to move him back to a safer position.

Marlene Donaldson LOROL Marlene used her negotiating skills to get a suicidal man to come away from the edge of the platform. She calmly assured him until the police and ambulance service arrived. Marlene was praised by various members of the community who returned letters of commendation and congratulations for her brave efforts.

Khusrav Waghchhipawalla National Rail Enquiries The National Rail Enquiries Customer Service Centre, based in Mumbai, India, is responsible for answering general telephone enquiries. The team received a call from a Help Point from a customer who informed the advisor that he wanted to kill himself. Despite being more than 4,500 miles away, Khusrav spoke with the customer as though he was his close friend before passing details of the whereabouts of the customer to the BTP.

Craig Newton Northern Rail While checking tickets, Craig became aware of a customer who was travelling in a drunken state. Craig engaged the gentleman in conversation as arrangements were made for station staff to assist. In this time, Craig kept the gentleman talking until he was accompanied by station staff.

Antony Warne Land Sheriffs Antony assisted with a vulnerable female who had to be restrained after attempting to run at an approaching train. Using his Samaritans training, Antony was able to calm the female and lead her from the station and to a place of safety. This was one of two interventions he dealt with in the same month.

Om Gurung Land Sheriffs Whilst at a station, Om spotted a male pacing at the end of the platform. Om and his colleague immediately positioned themselves between the male and the tracks and led him to his truck. Emergency services and BTP were called and Om waited with the man until they arrived.

Simon Sidhu Heathrow Express

Land Sheriffs James was informed of an uncooperative male travelling from Ware station. After receiving the platform number, James and his colleagues headed to meet the passenger when he arrived at the station. James spoke to the man and was able to diffuse the situation, avoiding an unnecessary altercation.

Marc Asamoah

Customer host Simon Sidhu saved a person’s life while on duty. Simon spotted someone sat on the top floor of the station’s mezzanine. Simon physically pulled the woman to safety and helped to calm her down while a passer-by called for help.

Scott Bristow Great Western Railway

GTR (Thameslink) Marc was nearing the end of a busy shift when he noticed a man on the platform looking agitated. Marc approached the gentleman and began speaking to him. Through his kind manner and persistence, Marc slowly managed to lead him away from the platform edge. Colleagues believe Marc showed “incredible courage and calmness in the face of a dangerous and challenging situation.”

Last year, Scott was stopped by platform staff on the approach to a station because of an attempted suicide. Scott stopped his train and subdued the individual, physically detaining them until the British Transport Police arrived to help. Stuart Keith said: “Scott embodies the values of GWR and his actions are a testament to his selfless nature.”

Stuart Barrett

TALKING SAVES LIVES

Merseyrail Stuart was called to assist a man who had collapsed on a train. Having received no response from the man, Stuart began using a defibrillator and started CPR. Because of Stuart’s efforts, the gentleman eventually took a deep breath, at which time paramedics arrived and took over.

Samaritans is proud to sponsor the Lifesaver award at this years’ RailStaff Awards 10,000 rail industry personnel and British Transport Police officers have been trained with the skills to help a person in need. These skills can encourage people to talk about their problems and help save lives.

David Fraser Abellio ScotRail David jumped down into the four foot to help a passenger who had fallen off the platform. Realising that the next train was due, David had no time to run up to the signal or inform station staff to stop the trains. David later found out that although the driver had received an emergency call, he would have been unable to stop in time.
