TRAIN DAY 1 VANCOUVER

KAMLOOPS

Board Rocky Mountaineer in the urban oasis of Vancouver, British Columbia, and journey through the farmlands of the Fraser Valley. From fertile greenery, the landscape transforms to the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains. You’ll see the mighty Fraser River and the raging whitewater of Hell’s Gate. Then, the landscape undergoes another transformation and you’ll find yourself amid scrub brush and desert. You will pull in to overnight at a hotel in the city of Kamloops.

Now your venture into the heart of the mountains begins in earnest. Continuing east along the South Thompson River, you’ll witness historic Craigellachie. This spot marks where the Last Spike was driven on the Canadian Pacific Railway line, uniting the nation. By geological standards, the Canadian Rockies are a relatively young mountain range. And because they’re remote, they are essentially unspoiled. Our Journey through the Clouds route takes you through some of the most untouched, most breathtaking natural beauty on the planet.

38

JOURNEY THROUGH THE CLOUDS ROUTE

TRAIN DAY 1 VANCOUVER

KAMLOOPS

Your journey starts gently, moving through the fertile farmland of the Fraser Valley and the rolling hills of the Coast Mountains. As your train gains altitude beyond the town of Hope, the Fraser River narrows and the waters run rampant. The train will slow to fully appreciate Hell’s Gate, a narrow canyon where the volume of water rushing through is about three times greater than Niagara Falls. At the midway point of your journey, near your overnight stop of Kamloops, the river valley remains lush and green while sagebrush covers the surrounding desert-like hills.

TRAIN DAY 2 KAMLOOPS

JASPER

When you board the train after spending the night in a charming Kamloops hotel, you will follow the North Thompson River, slowing to take in Pyramid Falls, a 91.5-metre (300foot) cascade of whitewater. After giving you time to pick up your jaw, the train continues on to the Yellowhead Pass. Moving past teal-green lakes, you’ll close in on Mount Robson, the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies. It’s so high it has its own weather system. The striking thing about this route is that once you’ve seen what you think is the most beautiful sight ever, something even more stunning comes along. To cap it all off, you’ll wind up in the alluring alpine town of Jasper. You can also choose to travel westbound, journeying from Jasper to Vancouver.

EXTEND YOUR JOURNEY WITH A RESORT UNLIKE ANY OTHER. Remote, elegant, and exclusive, this five-star hidden gem is well worth seeking out. This jewel of a package offers you the option of combining Sonora Resort – a five-star all-inclusive getaway in the wilderness – with a Rocky Mountaineer rail journey. Only accessible by sea or air, Sonora Resort is nestled in British Columbia’s Discovery Islands on a remote stretch of pristine coastal rainforest. But the accommodations and amenities are a far cry from roughing it. Choose from an abundance of outdoor activities offered, or enjoy the lavish on-site features. We suggest a mix of both. What better way to wind down from hiking and biking through unspoiled wilderness than rejuvenating at the spa? Or, perhaps you’ll decide to add on an eco-adventure tour, guided salmon fishing, or a grizzly bear tour. After, you can relax in the rooftop hot tubs, hop into the sauna, take in a movie, or visit the putting green.

THE WILDLIFE ISN’T AT YOUR BECK AND CALL, BUT WE CERTAINLY ARE. Enjoy outstanding seasonal menus featuring local ingredients. In fact, our Executive Chef often forages the nearby wilderness for seasonal delicacies like ripe berries and wild mushrooms. The dishes we serve tell incredible stories about the Pacific West Coast through flavours, textures, and colours. Of course, you can choose to accompany each bite with a sip of something wonderful from the well-stocked cellar. Chat with the sommelier about which wines will pair beautifully to take your gastronomic experience to new heights. This Relais & Châteaux resort is truly something to call home about – and yes, international phone calls are complimentary.

Tour the Discovery Islands in a Polaris vessel with a wilderness guide. Take in the amazing views, learn about the history of the area, and watch for the abundant wildlife around these parts, including bald eagles, Pacific whitesided dolphins, and killer whales.

In late August, September, and October, grizzly bears lumber to the Orford River to feast on the spawning salmon. Travel by boat up Bute Inlet, and then drive through the rainforest to viewing towers along the riverbank and see if you can spot the elusive creatures in their natural habitat.

RAINFOREST TO GOLD RUSH ROUTE

TRAIN DAY 1 VANCOUVER

WHISTLER

Beginning at the foot of the Coast Mountains, overlooking the stunning city of Vancouver, British Columbia, you’ll roll along the scenic fjord of Howe Sound. Prepare to be amazed as you make your way past massive cliffs, canyons, and stunning bridges. You’ll then arrive in world-famous Whistler, the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games host city. There, you’ll explore the picturesque village and enjoy a relaxing stay at one of Whistler’s hotels.

TRAIN DAY 2 WHISTLER

QUESNEL

The next day, you’ll depart from wonderful Whistler and travel up the Pemberton Valley, as you glide beside gorgeous Anderson and Seton Lakes. Turning north and west, the landscape becomes more rugged. More wild. Sheer cliffs on one side, milky-green lakes on the other. You’ll emerge into the arid ranchland near Quesnel, Canada’s gold rush capital. The gold rush may be over, but there are still many treasures to be found in this historic region.

TRAIN DAY 3 QUESNEL

JASPER

After an overnight hotel stay in Quesnel, you’ll head north again. Wide-eyed, you’ll experience mountainous terrain, untouched lakes, and incredible waterfalls. You’ll gradually gain altitude and enter the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The awesome sight of Mount Robson, the range’s highest peak, will greet you as you wind your way to the alluring alpine town of Jasper, Alberta. Every step of the way, your emotions will follow the extremes of the journey, from silent awe to uncontained elation. You can also choose to travel westbound, journeying from Jasper to Vancouver.

Our Coastal Passage route hugs the shoreline between the cosmopolitan cities of Seattle and Vancouver, before travelling east into the mountains. For the length of your journey you’ll be living on waterfront property, so to speak, soaking in incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, coastal rainforest, and Coast Mountains.

ROCKY MOUNTAINEER 2019 66

COASTAL PASSAGE ROUTE

TRAIN DAY 1 SEATTLE

VANCOUVER

Board the train in the Emerald City of Seattle, then journey north past the farms and forests of Puget Sound, picturesque Chuckanut Bay, and the pristine waters of the Salish Sea. All with the majestic volcanic cone of Mount Baker dominating the distant skyline. Eventually, you’ll reach the beachside community of White Rock, on your way to the gleaming glass towers of Vancouver. Spend one or more nights in Vancouver prior to continuing east on your Canadian Rockies rail journey.

TRAIN DAY 2 VANCOUVER

TRAIN DAY 3 KAMLOOPS

LAKE LOUISE OR BANFF

Now your venture into the heart of the mountains begins in earnest. Continuing east along the South Thompson River, you’ll witness historic Craigellachie. This spot marks where the Last Spike was driven home on the Canadian Pacific Railway line, uniting the nation. You’ll gaze in wonder at cascading waterfalls, and icy glaciers spilling over the lips of the peaks above, on your way to the charming alpine town of Banff and the brilliant waters of Lake Louise. And all of this craggy wilderness is yours to embrace, from the comfort of your luxurious Rocky Mountaineer coach. You can also choose to travel westbound, journeying from Lake Louise or Banff to Vancouver and Seattle.

- STEP 2 -

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE. You now have the unenviable task of choosing from four different routes. Unenviable, because they all offer something special, with unique highlights. And although there are similarities, each route passes through different landscapes, cities, and climates. So, what will it be? We would completely understand if you pick a Circle Journey that combines two or more routes.

82

STEP 2 - ROUTE

ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS Below are some of the key highlights of each journey, rich in historical storytelling and natural beauty! Keep your eyes and ears open so you don’t miss a thing.

CIRCLE JOURNEYS

If your aim is to be awe-inspired for as long as possible, you can choose a Circle Journey and combine two or more of our rail routes to get the most number of days onboard Rocky Mountaineer. Plan to start and end your journey from the same place, and then get ready to take it all in.

83

- STEP 3 -

CHOOSE YOUR SEASON. You can ride Rocky Mountaineer during the spring, summer, or autumn. This gives your vacation schedule a lot of flexibility, and provides you with the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Rocky Mountains under very different conditions. In the spring, you can witness the wilderness coming to life. Flowers bloom and new growth is evident everywhere, but the crowds of summer tourists are not. Summer brings longer, warmer days. Wild creatures great and small come out to play. And in the autumn, the leaves begin turning and hints of frost touch the peaks of the mountains. Keep in mind that early spring and late autumn offer our best pricing.

84

STEP 3 - SEASON

SPRING

SUMMER

AUTUMN

APRIL | MAY

JUNE | JULY | AUGUST

SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER

As winter relinquishes its hold and the wilderness comes to life, this is one of the best times to get onboard Rocky Mountaineer. Lakes, streams, and waterfalls swell. Bears lumber out of hibernation. Birds begin nesting. Flower blooms fill fields with vibrant colours. And best of all, the crowds of summer tourists have yet to arrive.

Warm weather urges vegetation to flourish. Newborn animals emerge under their parents’ watchful eyes. The days grow longer. The rainforest is at its most lush and the arid desert canyons have an especially rugged beauty during June, July, and August.

The forests create a vibrant display of red, orange, and gold, mixed with evergreen. Snow frosts the mountain peaks. The animals forage through the wilderness to prepare for the coming winter. The crowds of summer tourists are waning in October.

WHEN TO TRAVEL The west coast of Canada offers a temperate climate, with warm summers and mild winters. The Canadian Rockies feature a much more dramatic climate, with cold winters perfect for snow-based activities. July, August, and September generally have the finest weather. Turn to page 85 to view the average daily temperature chart.

We include passes to these attractions with most of our journeys. 18. D O I NEED A VISA TO ENTER CANADA? Depending on your citizenship, you may require a visa to enter Canada. Some international travellers who fly to Canada may also need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), prior to boarding a flight to Canada. TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. General Terms & Conditions Please read the following information carefully, as the terms and conditions described herein constitute an agreement between you and those who provide the service. If you decide to travel with Rocky Mountaineer and make payment on a tour, you thereby agree to accept the terms and conditions of this contract.

and additional drivers are extra. A one-way fee will be charged if the vehicle is not dropped off at the location specified in the itinerary.

2. Brochure Prices a. All prices herein are quoted in Australian (AUD) dollars. Please refer to Section 3 for further details regarding GST. Prices and information in this brochure are for the 2019 season and are subject to change without notice. Rocky Mountaineer cannot be held responsible for any changes that may occur and reserves the right to increase the price of any travel arrangement up to the date of departure. This includes, but is not limited to, exchange rate adjustments, fuel surcharges, and airfare increases. Deposits along with final payments must be in the same currency as the booking. Changes to bookings such as alterations of services, or cancellations are charged in the same currency of the original booking, and each change is subject to the current pricing as per the date of change.

6. Possible Alterations Rocky Mountaineer reserves the right to modify, alter, or substitute all or any part of its services when reasonably necessary or advisable. Should this occur, Rocky Mountaineer agrees to provide the best alternative reasonably available. Every effort will be made to adhere to the specifics shown herein; however, circumstances may necessitate alteration, including the occasional accommodation change from properties listed in this brochure. Hence, all fares, schedules, itineraries, hours of arrival and departure, air schedules, and special programs are subject to change without notice at any time. Rocky Mountaineer will not under any circumstances be liable to refund the charges as a result of modification, alteration, or substitution of services, subject only to the limited claims in respect of cancellation by Rocky Mountaineer set out in section 12 of this Agreement.

b. Exchange Rate. The exchange rate used in calculating the published prices has been determined by Rocky Mountaineer based upon current and expected currency exchange rates at the time of publication. As such, the converted AUD prices appearing in this brochure should only be used as a guide, and may differ from price at actual time of booking. 3. Canadian Goods and Services Tax (GST) All prices are subject to GST, which will be charged upon confirmation of booking. Currently, the Canadian GST rate is 5%. Other sales taxes vary by province in Canada; therefore, applicable taxes may vary for packages with services delivered outside of British Columbia. Guests who are not residents of Canada are eligible for a rebate of the GST paid on short-term accommodation. If they are purchasing their rail tour from outside Canada, Rocky Mountaineer may claim the rebate on their behalf. The result is a 50% reduction in the tax rate. When non-resident guests purchase their rail tour while in Canada, Rocky Mountaineer charges GST at the full rate, and any GST rebate to which a visitor to Canada may be entitled must be claimed from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency directly by the guest. This short-term accommodation rebate is subject to change without notice and does not apply to cruise or overnight rail trips. Note: Canadian taxes are subject to change. As such, guest billings may be adjusted as required. 4. Rail-Only and Package Tour Inclusions The following costs are not included unless otherwise specified: GST, fuel surcharges, transfers, gratuities, alcoholic beverages, meals, room service or other hotel incidentals, items of a personal nature, and all other items not specified in the description of the applicable tour. We reserve the right to pass on any additional costs charged by our suppliers. No right of cancellation exists in this circumstance. If one of our packages does not meet your requirements, we will be pleased to customize your rail tour package. Ask your Vacation Consultant for details. Individual tour component pricing breakdowns are not available. 5. Self-Drive Packages and Car Rental Policies Minimum requirements for car rental: • Driver must be 25 years of age, or older, • Possess a valid driver’s licence, and • Hold a major credit card. If the driver’s licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit is required. This is required for translation purposes to confirm the validity of the driver’s licence for the safety of renters and for the car rental company. A credit card deposit will be required at time of car rental pickup to cover costs not included in the Rocky Mountaineer package. These costs are the responsibility of the renter and are payable when the vehicle is returned. A car rental day is based on a 24hour period. For example, if you have a 3-day car rental and you pick up your car at 10 am, it must be returned at or before 10 am 3 days later; otherwise, you will be charged an extra day’s car rental. Rates are available at participating locations in Canada. Rates include unlimited mileage on sub compact (Group A) through full size (Group E). All taxes, fees (including but not limited to Air Conditioning Excise Recovery Fee, Concession Recovery Fee, Vehicle License Recovery Fee, Energy Recovery Fee, Tire Management Fee, and Frequent Travel Program Fee) and surcharges (including but not limited to Customer Facility Charge and Environmental Fee Recovery Charge) are extra. Rates exclude LDW (Loss Damage Waiver), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), and refuelling. Hotel parking, local toll, highway fees, or travel stickers required by local authorities are extra. Optional items/services such as child seats that are purchased locally are subject to local taxes and fees. Minimum age may vary by location. An additional daily surcharge may apply for renters under 25 years old. Upgrades to higher car class, additional rental days

Although great care is taken to choose suppliers, we are unable to directly control them and therefore we are not responsible for their acts or omissions. The travel services provided by these suppliers are subject to the conditions imposed by the suppliers, and their liability may be limited by their tariffs, conditions of carriage, and international conventions and agreements. 8. Company Liability You assume all risks of your participation in rail tour operations, travel services, accommodations, and other services, facilities, products, or events provided in connection with this Agreement (all of which are collectively referred to as the “Tour”), and you waive and release all claims that you may have or acquire against Rocky Mountaineer, GCRC, and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents (all of whom are collectively referred to as the “Releasees”) arising from or related, directly or indirectly, to the Tour, including claims arising from the negligence of any Releasee, and including (without restriction) claims for or arising from personal injury, death, property damage, delay, inconvenience, advertising, misrepresentation, loss of revenue or profit, loss of enjoyment, upset, distress, or frustration, whether physical, mental, or otherwise, expenses, travel, or accommodation costs, claims for punitive damages, claims for unjust enrichment, profits, waiver of tort, non-monetary loss, injunctive relief, or any other form of remedy, subject only to the limited claims in respect of loss of luggage or cancellation by Rocky Mountaineer set out in sections 11 and 12 of this Agreement. 9. Force Majeure Rocky Mountaineer and GCRC will not be responsible for the performance of this agreement if prevented or delayed by acts of God, strikes or other labour relations matters, accidents, weather, traffic, airport conditions, lack of performance by third-party suppliers, or other causes beyond their reasonable control from meeting its terms. Nor will they be responsible for any loss or damage relating to train cancellations or any other cancellations. Rocky Mountaineer and GCRC reserve the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a tour participant should such person’s behaviour, health, or mental condition be detrimental to the operation of the tour or to other guests. Rocky Mountaineer and GCRC are not liable for any expenses arising as a result of exercising this right. 10. Passport/Visa/Health Regulations Passports: If travelling from outside Canada (including from the USA) you will require a passport for entry into Canada and appropriate identification (ID) for all family members. All guests travelling on our Coastal Passage route will require a valid passport and/or visa (depending on their citizenship). Rocky Mountaineer is not responsible for guests refused entry into Canada or the United States because of inadequate documentation. For further information regarding entry requirements into Canada, please contact Immigration Canada. Single parents or grandparents travelling with children must ensure proper documentation is obtained for entry into Canada. Health Regulations: There are no vaccination requirements for international travellers into Canada. 11. Rocky Mountaineer has the right to search any guest’s luggage or personal effects for any such items and in its sole discretion may confiscate, store, destroy, or surrender to an appropriate authority any item that it reasonably considers is or may become dangerous, and to refuse boarding, or remove, any passenger who declines to cooperate in such a search or to surrender such an item. Money, jewelry, negotiable papers, cameras, video and electrical equipment, electronic devices, computers and accessories, cellular telephones, medical equipment, sporting goods, wheelchairs, personal mobility devices, walkers, and strollers are checked at the owner’s risk. Rocky Mountaineer is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to or by these articles and they are subject to Rocky Mountaineer’s Maximum Liability policy. All pets or animals (excluding certified service animals) are prohibited from travelling onboard Rocky Mountaineer. Any requirement for a certified service animal to accompany a guest should be submitted, in writing, at time of booking. Rocky Mountaineer will not cover full replacement cost of misdirected or damaged luggage and contents.
