Travelling by air. Switzerland’s main airports link perfectly to the country’s outstanding public transport network. In Geneva and Zurich, a railway station is located right inside the airport. Trains leave for the city centre every few minutes, taking passengers there within just roughly ten minutes. Additionally, comfortable trains operate to most other Swiss cities at half-hour intervals. Basel and Berne offer a regular and excellently functioning bus service between their airports and city centres. Basel, Zurich and Geneva all provide a rail ticket counter right at the airport to facilitate ticket purchases for the clients. The journey from and to the airport is included in any Swiss Travel System ticket. More comfortable without luggage Using public transport is the fastest and most reliable way to travel around Switzerland. If flying to Zurich Airport, the clients’ luggage can be seamlessly transported from any airport in the world to the destination railway station or destination address in Switzerland. For more information about this unique service, please refer to page 80 or access: sbb.ch/luggage.

Travelling by train from Austria.
Travelling by train from Italy.
The fleet of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) transports passengers to Switzerland in a swift and most comfortable manner. Night trains link the old imperial city of Vienna, as well as Graz and Villach, to Zurich, which allows passengers to arrive the next morning in a completely rested state. Also, ÖBB’s premium rail service “Railjet” takes travellers from Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck to Zurich in 2-hour-intervals on a daily basis. As usual, perfect connections from Zurich hub to the rest of Switzerland are guaranteed. The EuroCity trains from Graz or Bregenz offer panoramic coaches in 1st class.
Indulging in wanderlust and taking a break from everyday routine – from neighbouring Italy, many of the most scenic Swiss cities are only a comfortable train ride away. With the commissioning of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, guests now arrive in Switzerland in significantly shorter time and an even more relaxed state. From Milan, it actually takes travellers less than 3 1/2 hours to get to Zurich.

General information. Passenger information at the station
Good to know: Carefree travelling. The following basic information will help to understand how public transport in Switzerland works and to take the right decisions during the planning process for a journey. Public transport network The Swiss public transport network includes over 29,000 kilometres (18,000 miles) of rail, road and waterway and thus is the densest network in the world.
Coach classes 1st class coaches provide additional amenities like wider seats, more legroom and electrical power outlets. Furthermore, 1st class passengers benefit from quiet zones on the train.
Harmonised timetable – guaranteed connections At border stations and airports, connecting trains and buses guarantee a seamless onward journey. Connections are guaranteed in all places. Where no rail service is available, the journey continues by bus, boat or even mountain railway.
Seat reservations ■■ In Switzerland, the majority of trains do not require seat reservations. Trains offering seat reservations are indicated with an “R” in the timetable on sbb.ch. ■■ For panoramic trains with mandatory seat reservations, reservations should be made at the earliest convenience. ■■ Group reservations (10 or more persons) can be made via plabe.gruppen@sbb.ch. Information signs and loudspeaker announcements on the train notify travellers of reserved seats.
Regular-interval timetable Trains always leave at the same minute after each full hour. Main inter-city connections run at half-hour intervals. At major hubs, trains arrive every full and half hour. Postbus and boat connections are perfectly coordinated with these regular-interval timetables. The complete timetable is available on sbb.ch. Train categories InterCity (IC) trains connect the larger cities without intermediate stops. ■■ InterRegio (IR) and RegioExpress (RE) trains connect the mediumsized centres in Switzerland. Regional trains serve all intermediate stations and additionally provide access to all branches of the network. ■■ Major urban centres have their own suburban railway (S-Bahn) network. The trains, specially marked with an “S”, optimally serve the urban and suburban areas with a high-frequency timetable. ■■
Surcharge No surcharge applies on national, InterCity or InterRegio trains within Switzerland. Panoramic trains like the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express, as well as some Postbus lines (Palm Express), are usually subject to surcharge and / or require seat reservations. Rail traffic information Information about the current traffic situation and possible disruptions on the rail network is available around the clock via sbb.ch/166 (German only).
Travelling can be so simple.
Changing transportation is wonderfully easy in Switzerland. That’s because train, bus, boat and mountain railway are perfectly coordinated. Always according to the motto: arriving, changing transportation, travelling on – wherever the journey may go. mystsnet.com/reasonwhy

The lake has been dammed up by a pre-historic rockslide. There is no man-made dam in the valley, just a water reservoir at the south end, which serves to control the water drain. The Circular Viaduct is the most memorable landmark along the Bernina Line. Below Brusio, the Bernina Express negotiates a full altitudinal belt in one double loop of roughly 100 metres (328 feet) diameter each – without a single tunnel. The open route plan over the viaduct opens the view onto this masterpiece of railway technology as well as a breathtaking panorama.

A breath of fresh air on Bernina Express. On the section between Davos Platz and Tirano, guests of the Bernina Express may choose to enjoy open coaches. The windowless open-air coaches intensify the experience of nature. Great pictures of the stunning landscape – without any window reflections – are guaranteed.

GoldenPass MOB Panoramic.
GoldenPass Line.
The journey on the GoldenPass MOB Panoramic merges the tradition-rich Bernese Oberland with the Mediterranean flair of the French-speaking part of Switzerland. High panoramic windows allow travellers to experience the diverse landscape up close – throughout the year. Since 1976, this train has been the “master copy” for air-conditioned panoramic trains in Switzerland.
A breathtaking spectacle across three passes, through six cantons, along eight lakes and past the famous fourthousand-metre (13,000 feet) peaks of the Alps: With three different trains, the GoldenPass Line travels straight through Switzerland – from Lake Lucerne to the wine terraces of the Lavaux, the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the shores of Lake Geneva. The high frequency of the scheduled MOB Panoramic and MOB Belle Époque trains offers the chance to “hop on – hop off” and visit numerous sights and landmarks along the way.
Good to know ■■ New: On certain GoldenPass MOB Panoramic trains, an aperitif can be pre-ordered in 1st and 2nd class together with a seat reservation. ■■ All GoldenPass MOB Panoramic trains offer low-floor access suited for wheelchairs. There is no seat reservation available for the wheelchair area. Respective transports have to be announced via the Rail Center SBB in Brig. A bathroom with wheelchair access is located in the same coach. ■■ For maintenance reasons, no VIP front view trains operate in 2019.
Good to know ■■ Bistro coach available on the route Luzern – Interlaken Ost. ■■ Change of train necessary in Interlaken Ost and Zweisimmen due to track gauge differences. ■■ New: possibility to book seat plus aperitif with regional products on certain MOB GoldenPass Panoramic as well as MOB Belle Époque trains. ■■ Zweisimmen – Montreux: Switzerland’s only scheduled Belle Époque train without surcharge, offering luxurious saloon coaches in 1st and 2nd class.
Sales information ■■ All Swiss Travel System tickets are valid without surcharge. ■■ Seat reservation is recommended but not required for individual travellers. Seats can be reserved via national and international booking systems from three months up to 90 minutes prior to departure at the initial station. Via mob.ch, reservations are possible as of timetable change in December for following calendar year. ■■ New: Individual travellers can book an aperitif with their seat reservations on the GoldenPass MOB Panoramic trains 2115, 2118, 2119, 2122, 2123 and 2130 via national and international booking systems (code 31). Rütli.
St.Moritz
A steamboat or motor vessel takes visitors from Lucerne past this idyllic forest glade. This is where, as tradition has it, the Swiss Confederation historically originated: In 1291, representatives of Switzerland’s three founding cantons are said to have sworn the “Rütlibund”, an oath of alliance and allegiance, and thus to have founded Switzerland. The Rütli is closed to traffic but is accessible by boat or else on foot along the Path of Switzerland.

The surcharge for sections of the line can no longer be purchased. Baroque church of Wassen. After passengers have changed from the boat to the 1st class panoramic train in Flüelen, the train traverses the Urner Reuss Valley. At Wassen, the railway line makes a double loop. This part of the route is famous for passing the beautiful church of Wassen, situated on a slightly elevated spot, no fewer than three times. Thus, the church can be admired from three different angles: from below, up close and above.
Gotthard Tunnel.

The 15-kilometre (9-mile) long Gotthard Train Tunnel between Göschenen and Airolo took ten years to complete (1872 to 1882) and was internationally acclaimed as a pioneering achievement for its time. The tunnel breakthrough took place on Sunday, 29 February 1880. Nearly 200 workers lost their lives during the tunnel construction. During the passage, a short multimedia show lets this time come to life again.

Lago Maggiore Express.
Lötschberg Mountain Route and Centovalli.
The Lago Maggiore Express is an unforgettable excursion by rail and boat. This day trip on Lake Maggiore and through Centovalli (Hundred valleys) as well as the Val Vigezzo can be embarked upon from any stage of the round trip in either direction.
On many enjoyable roundabout routes, the RegioExpress Lötschberger and the Centovalli railway carry travellers off to marvellous scenes and destinations. The impressive Kander Viaduct, the horseshoe bends around the Felsenburg and the lovely view of the Rhone Valley – these are just a few of the unique views passengers can only experience on the RegioExpress Lötschberger along the century-old Lötschberg route. From Brig, Domodossola in the Italian Piemont region – starting point of the Centovalli railway line to Locarno – is within easy reach. There is much to marvel at during the ride along 50km / 31miles of this narrow gauge line: some 83 bridges and viaducts, light chestnut forests, and not least the delightful Merlot del Ticino vineyards.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.
Mountain highlights.
It is undeniably one of the highlights of any trip to Switzerland: the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. For more than 100 years now, the Jungfrau Railway has been making its journey up to the highest-altitude railway station in Europe. At 3,454 metres (11,332 feet) altitude, it is right at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Jungfrau-Aletsch”. From the viewing terraces “Sphinx” and “Plateau”, or from the Aletsch glacier itself, an amazing, high Alpine wonder world of eternal snow and ice reveals itself. The “Ice Palace” with its sculptures and its enchanted flair is also well worth a visit. For more background on the history of the century old Jungfrau Railway, the “Alpine Sensation” adventure tour is a must. Top attractions ■■ Station Eismeer and Jungfrau panorama. ■■ Sphinx viewing terrace at 3,571 metres (11,716 feet) altitude. ■■ Adventure tour Alpine Sensation and the Ice Palace. ■■ Chocolate adventure shop “Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven”. ■■ Aletsch glacier – the Alps’ largest and longest glacier. ■■ Snow Fun Park – adventurous cool-down time. Good to know ■■ Operates 365 days a year, regular interval timetable (every 30 minutes). ■■ Change of train necessary in Grindelwald / Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg. ■■ Travel time to summit: approx. 2h from Interlaken Ost. ■■ Refreshments available in several restaurants on the Jungfraujoch (e.g. Bollywood Indian Restaurant, self-service restaurant Aletsch). Sales information ■■ Holders of a Swiss Travel Pass or a Swiss Travel Pass Flex are eligible for a 25 % discount on validated travel days. ■■ Holders of a Swiss Half Fare Card are eligible for a 50 % discount. ■■ Children from their 6th up to their 16th birthday travel free of charge when accompanied by at least one parent with the Swiss Family Card.
Snow Fun Park. At the Snow Fun Park, guests can get refreshed and try their hands at various winter sports. “Snowtubing” with pirouettes on an inflated hoop, speeding down the slope on a sledge, zip-lining over eternal ice on the Flying Fox or skiing and snowboarding – all of this is possible in the Snow Fun Park. What’s more, it can be done spontaneously: Equipment is available for renting right there. The ultimate way to experience snow in summer!

The more ephemeral – the more beautiful! This is especially true for the “Ice Palace” and its treasures. With ice pick and saw, mountain guides created the halls and corridors in the middle of the Jungfrau firn in the 1930s. Today, artists shape the ice – with a delicate touch. On an icy round tour through this frosty world, guests discover artworks in many niches. Eagles, penguins and bears look like they’ve just solidified into ice, that’s how real they appear. A heart-melting experience, even at minus temperatures.
Alpine Sensation. Anybody who steps into the 250-metre (820 feet) long corridor leading from the Sphinx hall to the Ice Palace experiences a shiver down the spine. And that’s not only due to the freezing temperatures but also to the memory of the sacrifices that mountain workers made in order to open the Jungfraujoch to railway technology. 30 memorial plaques bear witness of it. The background music causes goose bumps as well: Together with pictures of touristic visionaries, it lets the beginnings of the Jungfrau Railways come to life.
Jungfrau-Panorama. There are times that one “cannot see the mountain for all the clouds” on Jungfraujoch. That has nothing to do with bad weather, however – on the contrary. Clouds are fascinating. Who hasn’t dreamed of bathing in that fleecy-soft miracle? The Jungfrau Panorama film makes it possible. It offers a 360° panoramic experience of the mountain world, the way it could never be had otherwise – 365 days a year. The camera takes visitors for a dive into the clouds, lets them sink into crevasses and plunge into masses of snow. Independent of what the weather is doing outside. The excursion up the Titlis – one stretch by “Rotair”, the world’s first revolving aerial cableway – is a real treat: Stunning Alpine scenery around the 3,000 metre (9,850 feet) summit, tempting restaurants, sun terraces and a “Glacier Cave” (free admission) all blend into an outstanding Swiss Alpine experience. The “Titlis Cliff Walk”, Europe’s highest suspension footbridge, is not for the faint of heart. The airy chairlift “Ice Flyer” takes visitors high above the Titlis glacier to the “Titlis Glacier Park” to enjoy its many free attractions.
