R ail infrastructure asset management: What lessons did we learn from past mistakes?

The main aspects of Asset Management consist in meeting stakeholder interests, by exploring them explicitly and translating them into companies objectives, finding a balance between the requirements and the overall (lifecycle) cost (regarding the expected line performance) by applying risk management and consequently linking activities to the companies objectives, managing the company in a fully transparent way by means of an explicitly traceable analysis by taking all relevant aspects and activities into account. We will be addressing how the European rail sector are developing and implementing asset information strategies, managing data across multiple disparate systems and leveraging new technologies to succeed.

lifecycle MANAGEMENT The liberalisation of the European railway market and the increased internationalisation of passenger and freight traffic ask for a different approach of investments in rail assets. Investment decisions need to be made taking into account whole-life and whole-system considerations as well as environmental and economic impact.

Lifecycle Management offers the rail sector remarkable opportunities and considerable competitive advantages. Lifecycle management includes the acquisition, utilisation, maintenance and accountability of assets. When a complex and demanding investment decision is being taken, the following aspects already need to be considered (among others): n Optimizing the balance between cost and quality throughout the entire lifespan of the infrastructure and rolling stock is the main focus of this conference n How can the optimal service life of rail-infrastructure assets be defined? n Which technical parameters best support the decision of whether to reinvest or continue maintenance works? n Why and how are vehicle and infrastructure management and design interconnected?
