GUGGENHEIM OF HELSINKI

The project area is located within the bay of the port of helsinki, very near to the market

square,

the

old

market hall and the big Esplanadi avenue. The site is adjacent to the observatory park and quay. From over the bay area; also clearly visible are two important seniorities: the Cathedral of Helsinki

and

the

red

Orthodox church. The charts show

that

many

public

services are a few minutes walking from the site. The diagram below links the cities of Helsinki with the city of Rome.

L’area di progetto è situata all’interno della baia del porto di Helsinki, molto vicino alla piazza del mercato, al vecchio mercato coperto ed al grande viale Esplanadi. Il sito è adiacente la collina del parco dell’osservatorio e la banchina. Da tutta la zona della baia sono perfettamente visibili, inoltre, due importanti preesistenze: il Duomo di Helsinki e la Chiesa Rossa Ortodossa.

Gli

schemi

mostrano che molti servizi pubblici sono a pochi minuti a piedi dal sito. I diagrammi mettono in relazione la città di Helsinki e di Roma.

The study of flows shows that near the project area there is a large turnout of people, caused by the important pedestrian and commercial streets in the city center and the system of squares, that come from North. The site is also well served by public services,

infact

a

tram

station is present in front of the site The central railway station is only 10 minutes away

from

the

museum

area. The diagrams of wet days and clearness, indicate that Helsinki isn’t good for photovoltaic.

Lo studio dei flussi mostra come nei pressi dell’area vi sia una grande affluenza di persone, causata dalle importanti vie pedonali e commerciali del centro città e dal sistema delle piazze, proveniente da Nord. Il sito è inoltre ben servito dai servizi pubblici, infatti presenta una stazione del tram proprio di fronte al lotto. La stazione centrale dei treni è a soli 10 minuti dall’area del museo con il tram. I diagrammi dei giorni di pioggia e della limpidezza dimostrano che Helsinki non è una buona città

per

il

fotovoltaico

come fonte rinnovabile.

The seniorities and the visual lines suggest that the entire elevation of the building will be relevant; the two long side in respect to both the hill and the waterfront, the short two for the cruise terminal the big avenue with the market square as well. The study of the sun and the wind shows that it is not a good location for eolic or photovoltaic

renewable

energy because the wind is not strong enough and the angle of the sun is too variable. Also there are few hours of light during the day.

Le preesistenze e le direttrici visuali mettono in evidenza che ogni prospetto dell’edificio sarà rilevante; i due fronti lunghi per la collina e il waterfront, i due corti per il terminal delle crociere e il grande viale con la piazza del mercato.

Lo studio del sole e del vento mostrano che non è una buona

fonti il

fotovoltaico e l’eolico dato che i venti non sono forti abbastanza

e

l’angolo

d’inclinzazione del sole è troppo variabile ed anche perché ci sono poche ore di luce.

Below in evidence is the project area and a wanted extention,

appropriate

to

realize a project that was not limited to the realization of the single building but also to embrace the rest of the site. The dimensions and the

restrictions

competition

of

the

show

the

planning problems and the limitations.

different

museum’s

areas are. There is also illustrated a diagram abaut the space occupied by the building depending by levels.

In evidenza sono l’area di progetto ed un ampliamento dello spazio da progettare, opportuno per la realizzazione di un lavoro che non si limiti alla attuazione

del

singolo

edificio ma che abbracci anche il resto del sito. Le restrizioni e le dimensioni da bando mettono in evidenza le difficoltà progettuali e le limitazioni.

Uno

dimensionale mostra quanto grandi debbano essere le diverse aree del museo. Vi è infine

dall’edificio

funzione del numero di piani.

The museum presents itself with two entrances: one for the genral pubblic and one specifically for VIP’s. In the longitudinal axis, that devides the building in two parts, there will be the permanent exhibition. In the East body there will be the main EXPO hall and the services spine for the

general

maintenance

and operations. In the West wing there will be the exit, close to the entry, alongside the museum store, a space studied for the child and the conference room with attached spaces. From the main entrance it is possible to see the great EXPO hall.

due

ingressi: uno aperto a tutti ed uno per i VIP. Nell’asse lungitudinale, che divide l’edificio in due parti, ci sarà l’esposizione

permanente

del museo. Nel corpo Est ci sono la sala grande delle esposizioni e la spina di servizi per le operazioni tecniche e la manutenzione. Nel corpo Ovest ci sono l’uscita, collegata all’entrata, con il negozio, uno spazio studiato appositamente per i bambini e la sala conferenze con gli spazi di pertinenza. Dall’ ingresso principale è possibile vedere direttamente la sala grande del corpo Est.

The first floor is occupied by the EXPO area and a space, in the West body, for the offices. This private space will never go in contact with the pubblic spaces, as it is visible in the first diagram. The other two graphics represent the zoning of the various areas and the differences between private and pubblic spaces.

The

two

bodies

are

connected by an “internal bridge”. The East elevation shows a duble skin facade that overlooks on the bay, it is realized in fiber glass and silicone.

Il primo piano è occupato dall’area per le esposizioni e da uno spazio, nel corpo Ovest, destinato agli uffici.

Questo spazio privato non entra mai in contatto con gli spazi pubblici, come è visibile dal primo diagramma. Gli altri

due

grafici

rappresentano

la

zonizzazione

delle

diverse

aree e la differenziazione tra spazio pubblico e privato. I due corpi sono collegati da un

“ponte

prospetto

Est

interno”.

Il

mostra

la

facciata a doppia pelle che affaccia sulla baia, realizzata in fibra di vetro e silicone.

The East body includes a second floor intended to serve as a restourant and bar. Annexed there is a large terrace that overlooks on the bay. The Restourant is directly accessible from the external walkway in order for the guests to directly access there witout passing through the

museum.

This

floor

communicates with the two lower ones bt the means of a big oculus that overlooks on the exhibition space. The kitchen is big and studied for european and local cuisine.

Il corpo Est possiede un secondo piano interamente dedicato al ristorante e alla zona lounge bar. Vi è inoltre una grande terrazza che affaccia sulla baia.

Il ristorante accessibile

è

direttamente dal

percorso

pedonale esterno cosicché i clienti possano direttamente accedervi

senza

dover

passare per il museo. Questo piano comunica con i due livelli

più bassi con un

grande oculus che affaccia sullo spazio espositivo. La cucina è grande e studiata per

la

gastronomia

internazionale e locale.

The

South

and

North

elevations demonstrate the longitudinal walkway that links the quay with the hill.

Also

visible

is

the

large

covered space in front of the entrance planned for outside exhibition ,same as the West body

rooftop

which

is

accessible to the public. The rooftop presents several longitudinal

skylights

-

benches. The large structural glazing made with glass spiders allows to have an excellent lighting in the double height atrium. The different layers of the bayfacade are more visible at this scale.

I prospetti Nord e Sud mostrano bene il percorso pedonale longitudinale che unisce la banchina alla collina. Chiaramente visibile anche lo spazio coperto davanti all’ingresso, utile per esposizioni esterne, come la copertura del corpo Ovest, la quale è accessibile e presenta alcuni lucernari panchine grande

longitudinali.

nell’atrio a doppia altezza. I diversi livelli della facciata sulla baia sono a questa scala più visibili.

In these two cross sections, the triple height game of the East bodyis clearly visible, made with two oculi and a large skylight. The structure is realized with an elliptical continued “c” steel beam.

The tensostructure, that holds the fiber glass and silicone "shell", is placed against the supporting wall in cls. The foundations are really large in dimensions and heavy, studied to resist to the weight of the building. The skylights of the West body; above the offices, are direclty linked with them in order to gain direct access to both air and light.

trasversali è perfettamente visibile il gioco della tripla altezza del corpo Est, realizzato con due grandi

oculi e un ampio lucernario.

La struttura è stata pensata con una trave in acciaio a “c” continua.

La tensostruttura, che regge il “guscio” in fibra di vetro e silicone, è direttamente addossata al muro portante in cls. Le fondazioni sono molto

grandi

e

pesanti,

studiate per reggere al peso dell’edificio. I lucernari del corpo Ovest, sopra gli uffici, sono direttamente collegati ad essi per avere direttamente luce ed aria.
