E-SAFETY INFORMATION Parents & Carers Guide to the Internet


The aims of the evening 

To look at how your children use the internet

To raise your awareness of online safety

To provide guidance/privacy for your child

Its not technology ……… its behaviour 

The internet is NOT going to go away

Removing devices form children will NOT work

The absolute only way to keep our children safe is to educate them on esafety.


Why is E Safety Important? 

Nothing is private – information can remain online for many years

Posts CANNOT be removed from social media/You Tube

(Inappropriate) images of self CANNOT be removed


Some Statistics 

Facebook 30 million unique users for the UK

Twitter explosive growth doubling to 26 Million dominated by the 25/44 age group

49% of young people questioned say they have given out personal information – names ages e-mail address, hobbies, school to person met on internet

44% of suicides 10-14 year olds MAY be bullying related.


Sexting 

Sexting - sending sexually explicit messages or images between mobile phones

Sexting can have very serious consequences for young people

Breaking the law


Grooming & Paedophiles 

Absolutely crucial you have conversation

Stranger Danger – take this conversation into the on-line world

Talk to your child about healthy relationships

Talk about pornography – this does not form part of a healthy relationship – know the difference

Pornography 

The internet plays host to a large amount of legal & Illegal material

Curiosity about pornography normal part of sexual development

Young people may be shocked by material

Not known what long term effect re exposure to such images (body dysmorphia)

Seeking out some aspects of pornography – may be illegal – criminal conviction

Inappropriate Content 

Children can come across inappropriate content through search results (Rapping)

Most search engines include ‘Safe Search option’ – excludes results containing inappropriate images or key words

YOU CAN install parental control software to filter out harmful inappropriate content for computers/some mobile telephones/games consoles

How can you help as a parent? 

Ensure computer is set up in shared family room – talk to your children about online safety

Set limits re amount of time on line

WIFI issues

Ensure child thinks before sharing pictures or videos on line – legal ownership

Ensure knows what to do if they are concerned about what is happening online

Understand how online experiences can expose them to risks:-

FLAG IT - If anything upsets you tell an adult

Your Child Should Not Give Information Like: 

Postal or e-mail Address

School Information

Mobile or Home Telephone Numbers

Details of any places they like to spend time

Holidays (facebook)


Offensive Messages 

Get your Child to Block people who send offensive messages

Tell them not to open unknown link/attachments

Ask your child to report offensive content to the moderator


Set up Parental Controls 

Prevent inappropriate content being accessed on line at home

The big 4 Internet providers:

BT/SKY/TALK TALK & VIRGIN MEDIA

Will provide customers free parental controls step by step guide that can be activated any time.

Other services are provided in the information leaflet.


Help & Advice 

Equip children and parents with the right information

Offer emotional support

Report to Internet provider to remove offensive content

Report to ‘Cyber Mentor’ – young people trained to give advice – on line chat

CEOP – Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre – Sexual or Offensive Chat
