PROSPECTUS
WELCOME
LIVERPOOL FC
Our partnership with Liverpool is such that we provide the education for their Academy players. This for a number of 11-16 year olds, plus the Under18s and 21s. The LFC students are treated no differently to all of our other students; we expect them to achieve excellent grades and play a full part in the life of the school. Admissions arrangements for these players sit outside, and in addition to, the admissions numbers for ‘local’ children. We have had a number of our students play for LFC First Team, including Raheem Sterling, Jordan Ibe, Jerome Sinclair, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Shey Ojo. They will not be the last.
TO RAINHILL HIGH SCHOOL I am delighted to introduce our School Prospectus. Rainhill High School is an 11 – 18 mixed comprehensive with 1520+ students, including 270 in the Sixth Form Centre. Over the last few years, we have won many awards recognising our students’ success in their examinations; success in GCSEs, vocational courses and A-levels. We are one of the TOP 100 Schools in the country and are in the top 10% of schools nationally for BOTH Value Added AND Continuous Improvement. Our success is not just in our 11-16 provision either; we are one of the top Sixth Forms or Colleges for academic and vocational courses.
2015
We have been an Arts College since 2005; in 2009 we became a Trust School, the first one in the locality, and since 2010 we have been the education provider for Liverpool FC Academy. Our school mission statement, “Reach for the Sky @ Rainhill High. Be the best you can” was devised by our students. These words epitomise our ambitions and seek to represent our aspirations for your child’s education and life at school.
PASTORAL CARE
Our students are at the heart of everything we do. We expect the highest standards of and for them. We expect them to work hard, achieve excellent examination results and we expect them to be good citizens. Most of all we want them to be happy.
The major strength of our school is that we work in genuine partnership with all of our parents and welcome you coming to school to discuss any aspect of your child’s education.
We want your child to be happy and feel safe at school.
We listen and we care.
We are proud of how we nurture our students from entry in Year 7 through towards their GCSEs, A-levels and on to university.
The quality of relationships at the school is a real strength. Our children enjoy coming to school. It is a friendly place to work.
We are proud of our students’ achievements in examinations. We are proud of the quality of relationships and of the opportunities we provide for them.
All of our pupils have a Form Tutor, a Year Student Manager and a Year Progress Leader from the start of Year 7 to the end of Year 11. We also have a specialist team of Tutors in the Sixth Form Centre.
We are not, however, arrogant or complacent. We want to be the best comprehensive in the North West and we are making headway towards this goal. Listening, working hard, adopting innovative approaches and being self-critical are fundamental in our success so far; our school is built on these qualities and we – staff and students alike – strive to embed this culture into every aspect of school life.
Although Rainhill is a safe and happy school, occasionally children do have disagreements and arguments and when this occurs, our Year Student Managers counsel and listen to students. This stops minor problems becoming major ones. We do not tolerate bullying; we act quickly. We support the victims and punish the bullies.
Rainhill is a very popular school; we are regularly and significantly oversubscribed. Each year we have more than 600 applications for the 240 places we have available in Year 7. The Sixth Form is full.
SETTLING IN AT RAINHILL
We seek to make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible. We have a specialist senior member of staff who overseas this transition each year. Prior to starting at Rainhill, your child’s Progress Leader visits every pupil at their primary school. Our Special Needs Coordinator will meet each identified child and their parents.
Every year we hold an Open Evening which you are welcome to come to. In addition, if you would like to visit us and tour the school during the day, please contact me to arrange a time; I would welcome an opportunity to show you our school.
All students have a two day induction in July, while parents have an evening to purchase uniform and another to meet key staff. Feedback from students and their parents has always been very positive about this process.
I am very proud to be the Headteacher of Rainhill High School and I enjoy coming to work every day. The staff and I work hard to help your child enjoy their time at High School. In partnership with parents we want your children to grow into successful adults who can make an effective and positive contribution to society.
Once your child starts, we appoint older pupils to be buddies, and we supervise key parts of the day; for example, staff maintain a visible presence around the school at lunchtime, when all students stay on site to either have a school meal or a packed lunch brought from home. At 3.10, staff manage all students safely on to the buses to ensure that a smooth and calm routine is maintained right up until the end of the school day.
HOW TO GAIN ADMISSION
Rainhill is a popular and significantly over-subscribed school. Our students live in St Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool, Halton and Warrington.
I look forward to meeting you.
Due to declining demographics, our catchment area is widening. At present, pupils in our feeder primary schools provide about 75% of each year group. Every year students get places awarded based on the 4th criteria of ‘distance from home to school’.
John Pout Headteacher
Admissions from Year 6 to Year 7 are handled by St Helens Council. Details of our admission criteria are available on request. Admission into the Sixth Form Centre is managed by the school.
2015
School leaders have created a culture of high expectations and ambition for the school, which is inclusive of all students.
02 - REACH FOR THE SKY@RAINHILL HIGH
The Headteacher and senior leaders have a strong vision for the future of the school that is inclusive and aspirational.
The school works effectively with external partners, including the local authority, to enhance students’ educational opportunities. As an education provider for Liverpool Football Club it has been able to invest in the physical environment, gain access to professional football coaching and enabled students to mix with young people from a range of different backgrounds.
Safeguarding, particularly of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged students, is strong.
Bullying was rare and when bullying is reported to an adult, offenders are punished and the bullying is likely to stop.
The overwhelming proportion of parents who completed the on-line survey agreed that the school keeps their child safe.

CURRICULUM PATHWAYS
In addition, we know it is important to ensure every child is stretched and challenged to achieve in everything we do.
In Years 7 and 8 all students take French. Some go on to study with either Spanish or German in addition to this, while others have additional Literacy, Numeracy or lessons designed to help their social and emotional development.
We believe that every child has a unique talent, either academically, athletically or creatively. It is our job to help them discover, nurture and develop this talent in order that every child can go on to achieve great things.
Consequently, we seek to avoid a ‘one size fits all’ curriculum.
To address the diverse range of needs, abilities and interests of our pupils, we treat each student individually in their curriculum package.
GIFTED STUDENTS
Our students take their GCSE options in Year 8. Specialising in their option choices early allows all of our students more time to get the best grades.
All Gifted students have an individual mentor who ensure these students have the right balance of intellectual stretch and extra opportunities, yet are supported and encouraged. We offer fast track opportunities in many areas of the school. This is where students can sit examinations early, or take on different challenges according to their interests.
We allocate students a choice of GCSEs and/or vocational courses according to their abilities and strengths. There are five different routes (‘Pathways’) which offer between them over twenty five GCSEs and a number of BTECs; this gives us the flexibility to tailor a route to success for your child, whether it be taking an academic route studying separate sciences or three languages to GCSE or pursuing success vocational areas in BTEC Construction, Dance or Catering.
We offer a tailored approach to these pupils according to their needs and interests.
It is vital to us that all students are stretched intellectually as much as possible. For our gifted pupils, this is of utmost importance. An example of how our gifted pupils are catered for is in science, where students can study separate Sciences at GCSE – Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We offer a wide and diverse range of GCSE subjects and at A-level, students can opt to take as many as four A-levels. In the Sixth Form Centre, we assist our students to progress onto Oxford or Cambridge and other elite ‘Russell Group’ universities. Some of our Sixth Form students start their university degrees early, because they have fast tracked through their A-levels.
ELITE PERFORMERS
A number of our students have a tailored curriculum to support their elite sporting programmes. This group includes professional footballers, athletes, swimmers, netballers and skiers. Balancing elite sporting commitments with school studies is not easy, and our dedicated member of staff works with parents to ensure that a balance is achieved. We will back them all the way in their journey towards becoming professional sports stars and future Olympians.
2015 The curriculum provides some outstanding opportunities for students’ spiritual, moral social and cultural development and prepares them well for life in modern Britain. Marking and feedback is increasingly effective with many teachers offering helpful advice. Disadvantaged students at the school perform better than similar students nationally. The school makes extensive efforts to support and meet the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged students. An appropriate curriculum and very effective support systems for students who are disabled or have special educational needs is ensuring that they make good and sometimes outstanding progress from starting points. 04 - REACH FOR THE SKY@RAINHILL HIGH
Regardless of the Pathway, all students study an Arts subject to GCSE. The range of courses is significant and includes Dance, Drama, and a choice from four different Visual Art courses; Photography, Media, Music, and Music Technology.
2015
Outstanding teaching leading to students making good and outstanding progress in the majority of lessons. Staff know their students very well. Students felt safe in school. Teachers use questioning very effectively to challenge students to think more deeply and respond more thoughtfully. The strongest teachers stretch their students by having very high expectations of what they can achieve, and by setting them demanding and thought-provoking tasks, matched to their level of ability. Teachers had very high expectations of students’ work.
Our curriculum offer enables our students to play to their strengths and to achieve their best. In parallel to studies at school, homework is an integral part of learning at Rainhill High School. Homework promotes independent learning and resilience in pupils, both qualities being fundamental to success, and we expect it to be a regular part of a child’s education. Tasks are graduated to increase in their depth and demand, commensurate with the age and ability of the student and challenge of the course. In the Sixth Form Centre we offer A-levels in 25+ subjects ranging from Further Maths to Economics, Law to Psychology, and from Theatre Studies to Chemistry. Our students’ A-level results are excellent. Our L3 vocational courses are one of the best in the country and we are proud that progression to the top universities is routine. We have won national awards from Government and educational bodies for the quality of our sixth form examination results. In parallel to this, our figures for providing students with good progression into careers and higher education are second to none. All of this makes Rainhill one of the best performing Sixth Form’s in the country. RAISING ACHIEVEMENT CENTRE
This is a facility in school where we can provide additional one to one support for those students who need it. For example, those students: l Who find the transition from primary school difficult. l Who need their self confidence building. l Who need to boost their Literacy and Numeracy skills. l Who need to improve their GCSE grades.

My ambitions for the future are… to become an engineer. Message to new pupils? Try one new thing that you’ve never done before every year. Highlights of your school career to date? Becoming Deputy Head Boy and playing for the school football team. I also represented the school in a Robotics Competition with Computer Science, which I am pleased to say we won.

Message to new pupils… Try your best and stay focused throughout the two years as the time at 6th Form goes very quickly. I would also advise doing some work experience as this can help to ensure you pick the right degree course and help you make the right career choice. After completing my work experience, I then changed my mind from Architecture to Human Geography so this experience was an important factor for me. Highlight of your school career to date? BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
We believe that there is a lot more to a good school than what happens during lesson times. We organise competitive teams in all major sports - from rugby to golf, hockey to swimming, cricket to netball. Football is extremely popular and we have successful teams for both girls and boys. Our teams have an excellent track record in winning local and regional competitions and we often get to the final stages of national football competitions. We are the only school in this area to ever win the Merseyside Schools Cup. In addition to sporting opportunities, we are leading providers in St Helens of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, consistently achieving high levels of success. We offer Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. This is a hugely popular activity with over one hundred pupils progressing through the scheme this year alone. Enrichment activities at Rainhill High School are numerous. Trips that allow learning outside the classroom are frequent; this year we have seen visits to Holland and Spain with Geography and History trips to Berlin and the WW1 Battlefields. In English, opportunities to visit theatres to see real theatre are frequent; this year we have visited Stratford, London, York, Manchester and Liverpool to see plays studied in the classroom as well as trips offering enrichment and wider experience of theatre. Two skiing trips run every Year, we have an annual dance trip to New York, a Drama exchange with the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and Language visits to Spain, France and Germany. The Sixth Form Centre students actively participate in a ‘World Challenge’ where our most recent cohorts have visited Sri Lanka, India, Peru Vietnam and Kenya to lead on Education and Relief Projects. Sixth Formers also take part in Science, Business, Law and other conferences, as well as participating in voluntary work at Whiston Hospital, primary schools, local and national businesses and care homes. In the Arts, music concerts, dance shows and drama productions are the norm. Knowing the real benefits such events have, all of our staff are enthusiastic about enrichment and extracurricular activites; this is supported with school facilities being open out of school hours, enabling staff to run extensive clubs and activities. We also organise a breakfast club and homework clubs are a daily occurrence. It is these opportunities that give students life-enhancing experiences that they remember for the rest of their lives. Our aim is that each and every student participates in at least one extracurricular club per week. We actively support pupils from a disadvantaged background in this too, providing financial support where we can to enable all of our pupils to enjoy and achieve in their time at Rainhill High School.

With increased confidence, while in the Royal Marines Cadets, I have participated in a parade at Buckingham Palace for Prince Phillip. I have represented St. Helens, Liverpool, Merseyside East and the North West UK. I also drill, most recently for the North West at The National Drill and Piping 2014 event. Furthermore, I represented St. Helens Unit, Liverpool and Merseyside in Marine Engineering, with a 2nd class qualification. I am qualified to take a rowing crew up to 2 miles offshore, as I am with a sailing boat. I am proficient with the L85A2 cadet GP assault rifle and have reached the rank of Corporal. With West Park Rugby Club, I have become an integrated member of the team, and we reached the quarter finals of the Lancashire Cup.

Previous Primary School: Longton Lane Primary School My favourite subjects are: Dance and Sociology School Club and Activities: I have been a member of the school’s dance company for 4 years, attending rehearsals twice a week. I also teach dance classes to Year 8 pupils during my lunch times. I enjoy Rainhill because… I have found that all members of staff are extremely supportive and willing to help you with whatever you need. My plans after Sixth Form are… I have been lucky enough to be accepted into some amazing musical theatre and dance schools across the UK, where I can begin my professional training in September. I have, however, not yet made my final decision about which one just yet! My long term ambitions are… To run and own my own dance school so watch this space! GCSE results: A*A*A*A* - Dance 4 x A’s –English Literature, Sociology, Drama, ICT 1 x BB – Science 2 x B’s – English Language, Photography 2 x C’s – Maths, Physical Education Why did you choose Rainhill Sixth Form College? The 6th Form is small compared to other local colleges so this allows pupils a greater opportunity to progress as individuals. It’s very easy to become ‘just another face’ in a larger college whereas at Rainhill you are cared about. Message to new pupils… Use your non-formal lesson times (free periods) on your timetable productively! It’s silly to waste time sitting around socializing during these periods as more work done in the 6th Form means less pressure on you and more time for you to relax at home and enjoy other pursuits you may have. Highlight of your school career to date? Having the opportunity to support so many amazing charities over the years. I’ve been involved with the Anthony Walker foundation and the ADHD foundation by performing at their charity evenings and helping to raise money and awareness.

There are 4 houses at the school, named after locomotives that took part in the famous Rainhill Trials of 1829. They are Perseverance, Rocket, Sans Pareil, and Stephenson. The House system is integral to our success and all pupils are involved in a range of activities annually. As well as a traditional sports day, regular inter-house Football, Netball and other sports, there is an Inter House X Factor competition, a ‘Rainhill Can Dance’ bonanza, a ‘Dragons Den’ design competition and maths competitions throughout the year. We also run ‘I’m a Celebrity’ ‘Bushtucker trials’ in a foreign Language and many more. Each student is placed in a House, and wears a tie and PE kit that reflects their House colours.

Previous Primary School: Longton Lane Primary School My favourite subject is: English Literature I enjoy Rainhill because… the teachers are all familiar to me and know my strengths and weaknesses; this means that all feedback I receive from them is personal, helpful and well considered with my best interests at heart which I appreciate. My plans after Sixth Form are… to progress to Durham University to study a degree in English Literature and History. My long term ambitions are… Though I do not have firm plans of a career choice yet I would like to travel and explore the globe after completing all of my education. GCSE results: 3 x A*s, 7 x As, 1 x B Why did you choose Rainhill Sixth Form College? Familiarity with the environment, the teachers and their teaching styles all helped to make up my mind. Message to new pupils: Enjoy school as much as you can as once you leave in Year 11 you will wish you could go back! I am expecting to feel the same way in a few weeks’ time when I will be leaving Rainhill 6th Form. Highlight of your school career to date? I have very happy school memories of laughing uncontrollably with my friends and enjoying each other’s company (most probably to other peoples’ annoyance on occasions!). However, I don’t regret a second of the time we have all shared together. I have made some great friends throughout my time at Rainhill. It’s very hard when we all went our separate ways in life, though I am sure we will all keep in touch! 16 - REACH FOR THE SKY@RAINHILL HIGH
Previous Primary School: St Ann’s C of E Primary School My favourite subjects are… Music and Philosophy School Clubs and Activities… I am Head Girl, a member of the school band, on the school council, and am an antibullying ambassador. I also sing in the choir, act in our youth theatre, and am vice house captain. Currently I am working towards my bronze D of E too. I enjoy Rainhill because… The teachers and students are supportive and friendly. What are your achievements since you started at Rainhill? In Y7, I was a House Captain and received the Head of Year award. In Y10 I was vice Captain for House as well. I particularly enjoyed creating the annual Sophie Lancaster Day, and won the Giving Nation Social Action award. I was also recognised nationally for the High Sheriff’s ‘Crime Beat’ award. As I look to Y11, I am both Prefect and Head Girl, and chairperson of the anti-bullying ambassadors. Musically, I have achieved Grade 2 on bass, and I’m really looking forward to this year’s school production, being cast as a ‘brother’ in it. What are your plans after Y11? I want to study Music, Philosophy, Drama and Psychology at our Sixth Form. What I do at university is undecided. I would like to be a therapist or a performer as well as volunteer in Scouts. My ambitions for the future are… to try and help as many people as possible, whether that be through music, education, campaigning or counselling and support. I also want to make a positive difference to other people’s lives. Message to new pupils… Don’t worry about high school, it may seem scary now but everyone is so supportive and friendly. High school goes so quickly but it’s one of the best times of your life. Highlights of your school career to date? By far, this was meeting Sylvia Lancaster and raising over £500 for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Through this, we made the Sophie Lancaster Day an annual event. Other highlights include becoming Head Girl, performing with the choir, being cast in the school production Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, becoming the chair of the anti-bullying ambassadors team and becoming vice-captain of our house.
2015 Respect for difference is promoted through activities such as the Sophie Lancaster day and links to the Anthony Walker Foundation. Relationships between teachers and students are based on high levels of respect thus enabling a good climate for learning to take place.

AMAR MAJITHA
Previous Primary School: Longton Lane Primary School My favourite subjects are… Physical Education and Business Studies School Club and Activities… I have been a member of the school football team since Year 8. From the age of 14, I have played golf across the U.K. for the County of Lancashire and also independently played in tournaments across the U.K. & occasionally in Europe. I was recently involved in the Junior Team Home Nations Finals at the Antequera golf resort in Malaga, Spain. I was there with my club (Huyton & Prescot) as we were national junior team champions in 2014. I enjoy Rainhill because… I see a large proportion of my friends on a regular basis at the 6th Form and many have been my friends throughout lower school so we have grown up together. I also like the courses I am studying. My plans after Sixth Form are… To embark on joint degree courses in Sport and Business at Loughborough University. My long term ambitions are… A career within golf or golf management. This would be ideally playing the game, coaching or working within the global golf industry business sector. GCSE results: 3 x As, 9 x Bs Why did you choose Rainhill Sixth Form College? I had already built up great relationships and trust over the years with teachers and many of my friends were also coming to the 6th Form. I liked the idea of the small class sizes and, being someone who prefers coursework rather than exams, the BTEC Sport course appealed to me and offered me some flexibility around my golf activities and commitments. Message to new pupils… The time goes really fast so make the most of it and use all your time effectively. BTEC coursework is demanding as there is a lot to cover and get Level but just a different approach to learning. So if you fall behind or are not dedicated to the coursework it can build up and cause you unnecessary problems. So, keep on track is my message and obviously speak up if you need any help organizing your work load. There’s always help nearby at Rainhill 6th form. Highlight of your school career to date? Gaining a good set of exam results in my GCSEs and constantly being on target in the 6th Form to successfully complete my Year 13 courses and examinations this summer.
Previous Primary School: Oakdene Primary School My favourite subject is: Mathematics I enjoy Rainhill because… of the personal and generous support provided to everyone, especially with GCSE and ALevel study, and the good relationships made with teachers and students. My plans after Sixth Form are… to progress on to The University of Leeds to complete a degree in Finance and Accounting. My long term ambitions are… To have a career within the finance and banking sectors and to work within the London finance markets along with gaining experience overseas. GCSE results: 3 x A*s, 4 x As, 4 x Bs Why did you choose Rainhill Sixth Form College? A massive bonus was studying within smaller class sizes which allows for teachers to have more time to deal with student’s individual needs and understanding of the subject. I have gained one:one support and help throughout my A-Level studies which I have really benefitted from and been very grateful for. Message to new pupils… Get involved with opportunities that come your way at 6th Form. There’s a huge range, with course subject trips to places such as Spain, London and Auschwitz. There are also annual student expeditions and over the past two years student teams have been to India and Tanzania. Peru is next year’s amazing destination for the current lucky Year 12’s. Try to make sure you also develop a good work balance so if you play hard you also need to work hard! Highlight of your school career to date? Most definitely, this would be receiving my AS results in Year 12 which encouraged and motivated me to continue to do well in Y13. Hopefully all my hard work and preparation this year will also pay off when I get my final A-Level results this June.

School Club and Activities… I play for the 6th Form football team and played for various teams whilst at school, such as cricket, athletics, badminton, rugby and basketball. I enjoy Rainhill because… I am with a lot of my friends and it’s a nice learning environment. The small class sizes are also a positive because in a lot of my classes it’s almost like a one-on-one with teachers, which gives you a definite advantage. My plans after Sixth Form are… to go to the University of Bristol to study Mathematics and hopefully be able to study abroad for a year. My long term ambitions are… to get a good job that leads on from my Maths degree that allows me to travel the world and earn lots of money along the way! GCSE results: 9 x A*s (English Literature, English Language, Core Science, Additional Science, Maths, Geography, PE, French, Media Studies) 2 x As (Business Studies and IT) Why did you choose Rainhill Sixth Form College? Going to Rainhill High School originally meant that I was already familiar with the teachers and how they teach, which I was comfortable with throughout school and which paid off well on results day. I also knew that small class sizes were typical at Rainhill, which I believe give you the best chance to succeed in a subject because you are constantly getting one to one feedback from a teacher. Message to new pupils? Make the most of all the resources that 6th Form has to offer (for example the Library), take every opportunity that you get to go on trips; some students will be going to Africa for a month this summer which is truly awesome. Also, do your work as you get it - so that it doesn’t pile up! Highlight of your school career to date? This must be reaching the quarter final of the national cup with the 6th Form football team in 2013. Getting the best GCSE results in our year was also pretty good! THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The external environment of the school is hard to beat. With our mature trees, new buildings and spacious attractive grounds, our site is the envy of many other schools. Our large fields provide a lovely place for our students to play, as well as giving lots of space for sporting activities. We have spent over £5m in the last 8 years on refurbishment of facilities, including: l New catering facilities. l A 3G Floodlit all weather pitch. l The opening of the Mike Doyle Arts Centre. l The creation of the Desmond Wilcox Media Centre. l New science laboratories. l A new business education department. l A new Technology Centre, containing state of the art technology facilities for Food, Textiles and CAD/CAM. l The creation of construction training base. l New student toilets, designed by the students. l Transformation of the Sixth Form Centre. l Complete refurbishment of the art and design block. l Refurbished LFC Sports classrooms, PE classrooms, changing rooms, sports hall and gymnasium.
We will continue to invest in the quality of the learning environment. All the classrooms in our school have interactive whiteboards and electronic registration through integrated and networked computing. We have a vast array of ICT facilities – 7 dedicated ICT suites, PC break-out spaces, Laptops and Macintosh to support the classroom learning, The use of ICT within our Media Specialism has been extensive and innovative, and has played an integral part in the schools huge success within this area, The £1.1m investment in ICT started utilising Citrix based Thin Client Technology, which, with lots of ipads and mobile devices, gives a 1:1 pupil to computer ratio.
