RAJESH GHADGE Editor, Goa Prism

rajeshghadge@gmail.com rajghadgegoa @rajeshrghadge rajeshghadge rajeshrghadge

Hello Guys Here I am back again with another interesting story for you and in this edition, I am going to talk about the Old Portuguese Colony of Goa also known as FONTAINHAS or The Latin Quarters of Goa. Based on the information gathered from various sources, Fontianhas was built by the Portuguese rulers somewhere in the 17th century after their capital was shifted to Panaji from Old Goa. The entire colony was built in the heist and the same is very much visible in the entire unplanned structure that still exists. There is a big story on the existence of this so-called old Portuguese colony that was built in heist for which you will need to turn the pages and read it in the section of COVER STORY but here I am going to give you only the glimpse of the story. As far as my research goes when Portuguese landed in Goa the Panaji city was not developed at all, in fact, it was just used as Port for the anchoring ships by the Portuguese rulers and the hill on which the Panaji church is situated was just the military base during the Portuguese regime and there used to be a big lighthouse existed on the hillock. During that time the entire Patto area was the creek with a number of salt pans but later on, it was filled with the mud and now the entire mini-city has been setup on that which is also known as Nariman Point of Goa. According to the records during the 17th Century when plague spread in Old Goa the Portuguese Rulers decided to move to Panaji and set up their capital here. When Portuguese entered Panaji they started the development process right from the Altinho Hillock which is connected to Fontainhas and Mala. As the area on Altinho started getting occupies they started moving downwards and reached till the Panaji church and from there to the existing General Post Office (GPO) area. If you take a look at Panaji carefully, you will realizes that the Panaji city has been divided into the two segments. The first is the area which covers the Fontainhas, GPO till the Courts has the full influence of Portuguese architecture also known as Colonial Architecture and the second is the rest of Panaji including the Patto that has been transformed into the Concrete Jungle. Once you enter into the Old Portuguese Colony, you will see completely different Panaji here. It has nothing to do with the development of Panaji city at all. The Fontainhas is still a very peaceful and quiet place in Panaji. The lanes are so narrow that in some places even taking a walk is difficult. This area with the frontage of waterways canal creates the illusion that you are not in India. This unique feeling makes the Fontainhas stand out from the rest of Goa. Presently this area has been declared as the World Heritage Site and no development whatsoever is allowed here in the future. This way at least this portion of Panaji will remain preserved forever. I will wait to receive your valued feedback on this issue. You can write to me at goaprism@gmail.com goaprism@gmail.com
