Dear Readers In the previous issue, we had featured the colonial houses of Goa and the story behind their existence in Goa and in this issue we are bringing to you the story of Braganza House situated in the Chandor. The Braganza House is Goa’s one of the Oldest Colonial structure standing with pride in the south Goa at Chandor. Chandor was known as Chandrapur before the Portuguese invasion of Goa and was ruled by the Kadamba Dynasty. Mrs. Auria Braganza who belongs to the 14th Generation of the Braganza Family Looks after the Braganza House at present and according to her, the house is around 500 years old. In fact this house was built in three phases of which the first phase is around 500 years old while the second phase (which is the existing structure) was built around 400 years back after the Portuguese invasion of Goa and thus it has the Colonial Structure and the third and the final extension was carried out 300 years back during the Portuguese rule in Goa. Tourists from the all over the world come to visit this place and it is one of the most famous colonies houses of Goa. The structure is divided into the two parts of which the one part is looked after by her. Mrs. Auria also revealed that this is the only place after the old Goa which has the relics of St. Francis Xavier preserved therein, which makes this place a holy heritage structure of Goa. The most important secret that Mrs. Braganza had revealed was about her ancestors. According to her they were the part of the Portuguese regime in Goa and were highly placed in the Portuguese government. This makes it clear that all the colonial houses belong to the people who served Portuguese rulers during their 450 years of reign in Goa. According to Mrs. Braganza, one of their ancestors, A.F.S. Braganza Pereira was representing the embassy of Spain in Goa. Another secret Mrs Braganza shared with me was about their region. The ancestors of Mrs. Braganza belonged to the Hindu religion and they were converted after Portuguese invaded the Goa. The Braganza’s actually belonged to the Brahmin Family before the conversion. Braganza’s were amongst the hundreds of thousands of people from Goa who were converted by the Portuguese rulers during their 450 years of rule in Goa. Today the Braganza House is a Museum rather than the home and people from all over the world comes to see the structure and the interiors which have the impression of Portuguese custom and tradition. The furniture inside the Braganza house has been brought from the various places across the world and once you visit this place you will be able to witness the Legacy Portuguese left behind. Rest all the features are in place and there are more added features in this issue. If you wish to leave any valuable suggestion please go ahead and send us your suggestions on goaprism@gmail.com

To the south of Margao, a long winding road branches off towards the fort from the National Highway-17 going towards Karwar. This quiet bumpy road leads towards the hills on the edge of the sea. A mere 25 km from the main city of Margao, is the lonely Fort Cabo da Rama. Cabo da Rama means Cape of Rama. It is the largest fort in Goa covering an area of 179,600 square meters. The landscape is wild and tranquil with huge areas of terraced ďŹ elds and cliffs of dark volcanic rock. The only obvious signs of human habitation are a few empty looking buildings dot the landscape.
