Goa Prism enters into the digital world with the launch of its first digital magazine
Goa Prism is having reach to more than 1.5 million visitors yearly and huge traffic of 100 million hits per year.
RAJESH GHADGE Editor, Goa Prism
rajeshghadge@gmail.com rajghadgegoa @goaprismmag
I feel tremendously happy and proud to bring to you the first fully digital version of Goa Prism magazine. Goa Prism had started its journey in the year 2007 with the small guide book for the tourist coming to Goa subsequently it has grown up into one of the Goa's most talked about online portal of Goa having reaching to more than 1.5 million visitors yearly and huge traffic of 100 million hits per year. Goa Prism is not only top most web portal of Goa but it is one of the most watched portals all over India. Its Alexa ranking in India is 12000 while 150000 globally. Keeping in mind this huge success of Goa Prism I have decided to convert it into the digital magazine of Goa. This Digital magazine will be published every month and will bring to you the latest stories and updates from Goa's tourism industry. It will bring the unbiased reviews of the places in Goa which many tourists are not aware of. The idea of bringing the digital magazine out is to provide the reader with first-hand information that too right on their digital devices almost free of cost. Initially, we will have the free (readable) and paid (downloadable) versions and subsequently, it will be converted into a premium version with added features and stories for the paid users while the limited free version will exist forever. The world is getting advanced into the digital sphere and soon there will be a time when almost everyone will adapt to this new technology. With the lack of time and the continuous movement, it is not feasible to carry the heavy books and magazines while travelling. The only option remains with today's travelers is getting things right on their smartphones and tablets and that is where we will come into the picture. Please do not forget to provide your valuable suggestions on our first issue and that will help us to do required changes in the future.

Dona Paula has many legends behind its existence. According to one source, this place is named after Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior, a historical Figure in Portuguese India. She was the daughter of the Portuguese Viceroy of Jaffnapatnam, in Sri Lanka. She and her family arrived in Goa in 1644 and she married a Fidalgo from Spain in 1656. Her husband was Dom Antonio Souto Maior. They were an extremely a uent family, and the entire property from the present day Cabo Raj Nivas all the way to Caranzalem belonged to the Souto Maiors. She died on December 16, 1682. According to another local myth Dona Paula entombed in the Cabo Chapel, the residence of the Governor of Goa and is supposed to be seen emerging from the moonlit waves wearing only a pearl necklace. Several tourists as well as locals guided by this myth visit the beach for a glimpse of Dona Paula. The Cabo Raj Bhavan is situated at a scenic spot of Dona Paula. It is also home of a historic British war-graves cemetery. After the end of Portuguese rule in Goa in 1961, Dona Paula became a fashionable residential area and address. Dona Paula is a very famous amongst the tourists visiting to Goa. During the tourist season Dona Paula transforms into a crowded stretch which is otherwise a calm beautiful place during monsoons. A large part of the famous Hindi movie Ek Duuje Ke Liye was shot here, popularizing the place further. An action sequence from Rohit Shetty's movie Singham was also shot here. The idyllic rocky tourist attraction lies at the spot where the Mandovi and the Zuari rivers meet and congruence with the Arabian Sea at a distance of 1 km from this point. One of the most curious attractions in Dona Paula is a whitewashed statue perched on the rocks near the popular ferry jetty. Sculpted in 1969 by Baroness Yrse Von Leistner, there are different versions to its purpose of origin. According to Goa Tourism Board's website, it is named "Image of India" and depicts the gures of Mother India and Young India, one looking to the East and the other to the West. The Wheel of Ashoka is in the middle half, buried in stone, to represent the ancient culture that nurtured this blend of ideas and emotions. While in the book 'Walking in Goa' published by Heta Pandit, it is said that the Baroness had actually sculpted statues of philosopher Robert Knox and his wife because she admired him.

Twin Bridges of Goa Two bridges built over Mandovi River, known as the twin bridges of Goa. After the fall of the rst Mandovi Bridge in 1986, which was built by the Gamon India Company, people were dependant entirely on the ferry service which was available every 15 minutes and it was highly inconvenient process. The whole traf c system was nearly collapsed then. Government of Goa built another bridge over Mandovi River and the old bridge was repaired at the same time. Presently the capital city of Goa is connected with two parallel bridges which connect the entire north Goa to Panaji city. Very soon the Mandovi River will have third bridge which will be surfaced over these twin bridges. The construction of third bridge is highly controversial issue as government is going through major nancial crisis and need of third bridge is not the priority at the moment. The opposition and certain segment of society is highly against this development. According to them the Zuari Bridge needed immediate attention while government is seems to be neglecting it and putting unnecessary funds on the third bridge. Whatever may be the consequences but this may be perhaps rst of its kind example in Goa which is being the smallest states in India has three bridges at the single location standing over the single river.

Se Cathedral Church St. Cathedral Church in old Goa is one of the oldest churches of Goa situated on the bank of Zuari River. It is one of the ancient and the largest churches of Asia which is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria. It is the church of the Latin Rite Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, and the seat of the Patriarch of the East Indies. The church is situated on the western side of the main square, Terreiro de Sabaio, with the front facing the east. It took around eight years to construct this beautiful church, under the reign of the Portuguese. This church represents the royal and imperial atmosphere of Goa prevailing at that time. UNESCO marked it as a heritage site and is considered as one of the most sacred places among the Christians. The structural design of the church is classically Portuguese with a Corinthian core and Tuscan peripheral. People from all over the world come to visit this church and to take the blessings of God. Apart from being a holy shrine, it is also the main attraction of tourism in Goa. In 1776, a lightning struck a tower on the northern side of the church destroying it. Till now it has not been rebuilt. According to legends, it is believed that in 1919, a vision of Jesus Christ appeared on the Church and from that time onwards it is assumed that the cross is increasing in size. History Dominicans, who were the Chaplains, were sent to India by the Portuguese under the rule of Alfonso de Albuquerque to ďŹ ght the Muslim army, who had captured Goa in 1510. In 1552, Governor George Cabral ordered to redesign it but the opening years were spent on planning and designing and the actual construction of the church began only in 1562, under the supervision of the King Dom Sebasitao and was completed in 1619. It was designed by Julio Simao and Ambrosio Argueiro, the Stalwart engineers. In 1640, the church was sanctiďŹ ed and, thus, became a holy place for Christians. The height of the church is around 250 feet in length and 181 feet in breadth and the frontispiece of the church is 115 feet high.

Nariman Point of Goa Patto plaza or just Patto, is also known as the Nariman Point of Goa. Home to some well-known business houses, Patto Plaza has earned the distinction of being the premier business centre in the capital city. Apart from housing some swanky complexes, Patto Plaza offers a large number of eateries and caters mostly to the office going crowd. The hotels within the Plaza are also conveniently located as they are just a couple of minutes-drive from the capital city. Conceptualized in 1987, Patto Plaza has undergone a lot of changes in the past two decades. From being a stinking mangrove swamp (though it still stinks but due to garbage treatment plant set by the government) to a high rise commercial hub, the Plaza has attained a pride of place in the State. The government took the initiative of converting a barren land into something that would give the state some commercial significance. Patto plaza is one and the only systematically done up place in Goa having the systematic entry and exit for all types of vehicles and entrance and exit points into the Plaza, sorted parking facilities for two and four-wheelers and spacious commercial complexes which can house a number of corporate offices. A government arm, the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) took up the task of developing Patto into a vibrant commercial hub. One of the main reasons to develop the place was to provide companies and corporate offices a common address. The EDC along with consultant Rahul Deshpande and Associates created a perfect picture which was nothing less than an architectural and engineering marvel. Patto Plaza sprawls on an area of 1,87,000 square meters of which 1,05,000 square meters has been utilised in construction. Currently, around 37 buildings are envisioned along the periphery most of which are still under construction. The commercial hub wasn't built overnight. In fact it got evolved and gained the present status more than two decades ago. The major upgrading work was given a go ahead in 2008 which took five years to complete. Prior to the renovation works the state of Patto Plaza was in a very bad state. Nothing was planned or prioritised in the area. Vehicles would be parked in a haphazard manner, there was no proper provision for garbage management and the condition of the roads was deplorable. GOA PRISM / VOL 1 ISSUE 1

The Colva Beach Nestled in the calm and serene part of south Goa, Colva is one of the most visited place by tourists. It is especially very popular in Indian tourist crowd. Colvá was a vast barren uninhabited land with a scenic Arabian Sea beach that had beach plants such as scaevola sericea until a few Goud Saraswat Brahmin settled there as migrants, primarily in the neighbouring village of Benaulim. The mughals, the people of Adil Shahi dynasty preferred the north and hilly regions of Goa, where they built forts and defenses, rather than the coastal belt, and hence had not settled the barren land of Colvá. It was the Portuguese conquest which established the western regions of South Goa as a full-fledged human settlement. Colvá was under Portuguese administration, as the Province of Portuguese-Goa, from 1510 until 1961. It was the village of the Portuguese Roiz family, the descendants of D. Diogo Rodrigues, and its villagers. The village had belonged since 1550 to D. Diogo Rodrigues, who was the Lord of Colvá. He built the first Portuguese architecture residential house in 1551 facing away from the sea and at a distance from the shore to avoid any enemy attacks from the Arabian Sea. The entire beach called Praia da Colvá belonged to him. In the 18th century, one of Diogo's descendants, Sebastião José Roiz, ordered the village people to plant coconut trees along the entire coastline, which the villagers thought was a waste of time as the soil was white and thus infertile and unable to sustain their growth however today the shore line is fringed by those plantations of coconut trees. The entire Colvá shore and beach property as far as Betalbatim was inherited by various descendants of the Roiz family until the late 20th century, after which parts were handed over to the Government of Goa under the post-1974 Indian administration following the 1961 annexation of Goa by India. The rest of the land was sold.

Today, no sign of it is seen. Slight sketch of the olden glory can be drawn from the 400 yrs old papers recorded during Portuguese rule. The temple owned farms, ďŹ elds, orchards and land properties in Kushasthali and other villages. Ornaments of gold and silver, clothes made of silk and many other people costly items were the property of the temple. The huge bells in the temple were held in place by strong,, thick roops made of silve , states the papers. The gram Saunstha of Comunidade of Kushasthali or kuthal was established by the people residing in the village . Those villagers were the owners of this Comunidade. They all believed in the God Shree Mangesh , hence he become the God of this Comunidade. When Nath Sampraday (devotees of Nath faculty) established in Goa.

St. Thomas Church Aldona The Church of St. Thomas remains an awe inspiring presence in Aldona. It was built in 1596 on a high plateau on the banks of the Mandovi River passing through Mapusa and Aldona. A flight of broad steps cut into a cliff and lead to an open plain that surrounds the grand white building. Inside, the Church is ornately decorated by symbolic biblical murals and grand statues. The treasures of the church are the subject of a village legend. At one time, the statues of the church were strung with jewellery by villagers as thanks for prayers answered. But Churches were often robbed of these jewels. The Church buildings are white-washed in the tradition of Goan churches. The band stand in the grounds and the cemetery are also white-washed and all together evoke a feeling of awe. The gate of the Church graveyard has a sign in Konkani “Aiz Maka Falea Tuka” which translates into something akin 'Me Today You Tomorrow', a poignant reminder of our mortality. The Franciscans established the church as the seventh parish in Bardez. The edifice one sees today came up only around 1610 AD. The original building was a mud structure. In 1898 AD, new additions were made by way of the current sacristy and the parochial residence. The tower that is visible today on the left hand side was added as late as in 1927. The overall origins of the church go further in the past beyond 1927. In fact, the Franciscans initially built the church in 1569 AD at Coimavaddo, where they had started their ministry. The new building was built in 1596 AD due to the requirement of a more conveniently located bigger church. A Feast is celebrated here on 3rd Sunday following Easter.

St. Jacinto Island If you are a nature lover, and are up for a short drive to experience a relatively untouched ecological conservation in Goa; one of the rare places that have escaped commercialization is the Sao Jacinto Island. Sao Jacinto Island is located on the Panaji-Vasco-daGama road. It is 7kms from Vasco Da Gama, 25kms from Margao and 23kms from Panaji, the state capital and 5kms from Bogmalo, in the Mormugao bay. One often passes the San Jacinto Island while on the way to or from the Dabolim airport. Due to the legend, the underground tunnel connects the old chapel with Siridao Beach resort, which is located on the far bank of Mormugao Bay. The island is connected with the nearest part of the mainland by the bridge called Silver Gate Bridge. San Jacinto can be reached by a rented boat. Local Travel agencies organize dierent tours and excursions to the island at a regular basis. On the San Jacinto Island you can also ďŹ nd a well-preserved old Portuguese lighthouse, from the top of which you can enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful views onto the Indian Ocean and the Goa coast. A short boat ride on the choppy waters of Bogmalo Beach brings you to the beautiful island of Sao Jacinto. The coral sighting beneath the clear waters of this tiny island in the Mormugao Bay are almost magical. The island is blessed with natural beauty and is alluring from a distance and endearing when you arrive. An old and picturesque chapel adds to the beauty of the island, which can also be sighted while travelling from the Dabolim airport. The St Jacinto Island has a regular bus service from Panaji and Vasco-Da-Gama. You can disembark from bus at St Jacinto Island. You can also hire a taxi or motorbike to reach from any location in Goa. In the year 1927 a vow was made by the inhabitants of the island who purchased the place not to sell or lease it out to any projects to any construction companies to build touristic or industrial facilities on their island. Therefore the island still has its natural charm.

Boats and canoes are the best means to explore the sanctuary. Boats cannot navigate in low tide but the narrow canoes fare marvelously at all times. Tourism-ofindia.com offers information of the Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Goa. For more information or to book a tour package to Goa. This is Goa's only bird sanctuary,1.8 sq km in area. A variety of local and migratory birds can be found on this island. This Sanctuary is criss-crossed with a network of water channels. So movement is restricted to the duration of high tide if one wants to go by boats. However for canoes, the creeks are accessible even during low tides. A watch- tower has been erected in the Sanctuary for better viewing of birds. Apart from the several resident birds, the Sanctuary also has some winter visitors like coots and pintails. The Wildlife Division of the Forest Department proposes to start conducted tours through the water channels .It is envisaged that a group of 89 persons could be taken at one time. However, the exact modalities are yet to be worked out. Resource material and useful information could be acquired at the Range Forest OfďŹ ce at Campal, in Panaji.

Being a heady mix of nature, adventure and wildlife, this city in Uttar Kannada district of South India is growing in stature as the place to be. Dandeli is approximately 125km from Goa and is well connected with the other parts of the country. With driving time of five hours, the best route to take is Ponda – Londa – Dandeli. The city is located along the banks of the Kali River with the Western Ghats as a backdrop. The location is surrounded by thick deciduous forests, which is one of the richest wildlife habitats in the world. Once there check out the tree houses, pretty expensive but worth staying at least a night. Amazingly, there is bath tub in this tree house. Initially, when Rajkumar started his company the market trend was completely different although the real estate prices were always been climbing in Goa. His first project named Reliance and Karl view at Porvorim taken over from the very famous builder known as Carl D'souza and was completed within two years and sold out instantly, it was not the magic but the customer service and affordable pricing which amounted into the instant sale of the first project. The main ingredient according to Rajkumar is, “We give proper guidance to our customers, we don't hard sell, but we fulfill the need of customer by providing him what he is looking out for. In case customer have any grievances it is taken up immediately by our team and the solution is provided there and then. Because of that we have repeated customers and referrers,” said Rajkumar. “We also make sure that we keep the requirement of the client in mind while building our projects. Our clients vouch on our services and stand by us. We always deliver more than we promise,” Rajkumar claimed. “Customers are our friends and our entire team have been trained to deal with the clients in a similar manner. We make one friend in return we get many more,” he added. Reliance Construction is having a fully equipped office with different departments to deal with various aspects of the work on day to day basis. “We currently have four projects going on in north Goa. Assagao, Siolim, Verla
and Moira and more are in the pipeline. I will announce them soon,” said Rajkumar. When people buy an apartment from Reliance they make sure that they handover the possession within the prescribed time limits, “We do not make our customer wait for anything. What we promise we deliver and, in fact, we always deliver more than we promise. For us, customers are not the means of making a profit but they are our investors who invest into the property which promises to fetch them big profits in very short span of time,” said Rajkumar. Rajkumar is qualified law graduate from Salgaonkar Collage of Law but later he perused his career into the field of construction. He started his journey from very small and today made it to the biggest height of achievements. “I started as Supervisor and then went to become a contractor and today I am the successful builder and all this credit goes to my supporters my clients who made their decision to invest into me and my projects,” said Rajkumar. “Today we are having many multi-state projects in the pipeline and soon it will be revealed to the press,” he added. This festive season we are completing 10 years and I am announcing the special offers such as “FREE CAR PARKING” and guaranteed low Price compared to any other Builders for our prospective buyers.
