holi Starting of spring season spreads colours in the life of one and all with celebration of Holi (the festival of colours). Earlier days the celebration of Holi was limited to the Hindus but now not only Indians but even foreigners takes active part in this festival. Like any other Hindu festival there are many legends behind the celebration of Holi, in one of the legend King Hiranyakashyapa's sister Holika who sat in bonfire with Pralhad and she got burnt to ashes. In another legend it's about the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha. Colours brings happiness in our life, it exposes our personality and that's why we like vibrant colours and maybe that's why we prefer to throw colours on others to spread the happiness in this world. But once the festival is over we forget everything and go back to our selfish world start fighting with our neighbors and friends on silly things, in name of God, in the name of religion and in the name of racism. Why do we forget that if we keep spreading the colours of love and happiness every day the world will give same colours back to us, which in turn will make our life more meaningful? The Spring 2014 issue of Goa Prism this time has many colours to spread in the life of our readers. The colour of Fashion, Fitness, Culture & Cuisine and more is waiting to enter into your life. It's getting better and better every issue. The purpose behind our efforts is just to provide you very healthy content and useful information, and this issue brings to you all that you were always been looking for, besides of course our improved size of the magazine. I am looking forward for your participation and feedback very eagerly as all the efforts are just mean only for you, our esteemed readers. Please log into your account and shoot us the mail as what you want to see in our next issue, and I promise you that I will keep no stone unturned to obey your command. Till next time happy reading.. CUISINE & G oa 365 days on holiday as it portrayed by the tourism department may be the only place in India or perhaps on the planet where even life takes it easy. The relaxed attitude and easy going
lifestyle along with easily adaptable Goan traditions and customs makes Goa unique. Though laws prevailing in the state are stringent, people go

easy on traditional practices. There is flexibility to the traditions and customs of Goa. Traditionally Goa possesses a unique legacy of different cultures. Tradition and custom have affected almost every aspect of the Goan lifestyle. One can see the typical Portuguese culture in the architecture of a house or church. The rich cultural heritage of Goa is a stark contrast to the rest of India. Everyone is free follow the kind of lifestyle they want to, unlike the rest of India where tradition and conservatism is an inseparable part of one's life. Religion, customs and tradition surprisingly do not form a division in the cohesiveness of the people of the state though mainly there are two parts one is densely populated with Catholics and other is Hindu, though Muslims are in minority as the rest of the part of India. People are free to practice the religion of

their choice and they respect the existence of other religions too. At the same time, they move ahead with the world and are in sync with the latest trends and beliefs. The unique quality of Goa truly unique is that you won't find people fighting or arguing over religious issues or dress codes. Goan Cuisine mainly consists of seafood, coconut milk and rice. These are also the main ingredients of Goan delicacies. Use of Kokum is another distinct feature. Goan food cannot be considered complete without fish. It is similar to the Malvani cuisine. Fish curry rice is main food of all Goans. Its but natural due to its location on coastal belt. Goan cuisine is a blend of different influences the Goans had to endure during the centuries. The staple food in Goa is fish, both among the Hindus as well as the Catholics. On other fronts however, there is a vast

difference in the foods of these two communities, the main reason being that the Christians also eat beef and pork which are taboo in most Hindu households. While Hindu Goan food

does not seem to have picked up any Portuguese influence, the Christian food has been influenced not only by the Portuguese, but also by its overseas settlements. However, it has not been a one-way transfer. An example is canjade galinha, which is a type of chicken broth with rice and chicken pieces, and is originally a Goan recipe. Another is arroz doce, which is a Portuguese adaptation of pais or kheer (sweetened rice) found in India. The cuisine of Goa is influenced by its Hindu origins, four hundred years of Portuguese colonialism, and modern techniques. The state is frequented by tourists visiting its beaches and historic sites, so Goan food today has an international aspect. Fenny is another major part of Goan Cuisine which is consumed by most of the people from either religion, though now lately the consumption of Beer and imported wines has caught up by Goans. People from all over India travel to Goa specially to consume liquor which is according to them is available very cheap and at its purest form. FENI is synonymous with Goa just as
much as Scotch is with Scotland, Tequila with Mexico, or Champagne with France! Indeed, the cognoscenti will testify that good Feni can be as smooth as any single malt. And Feni in Goa and increasingly among the more discerning in Europe is

considered exotic aqua vitae, a versatile base for cocktails, as good as any Global white spirit. Just as much as the best wines and white spirits have their base in natural products, so too does Feni. If Scotch is a product of barley and, of course, the unique water of the Scottish lakes, and Champagne a product of the finest grapes of the Champagne district in France, so is Feni the pure fermented juice of the cashew apple…and there is just as much romance and ritual to the growing, harvesting and distillation of Feni. Feni (sometimes spelt fenny or fenim) is a spirit produced exclusively in Goa, India. There are two types of Feni; cashew feni and coconut feni, depending on the original ingredient. The small batch distillation of feni has a fundamental effect on its final character; still retaining some of the delicate aromatics, congeners and flavour elements of the juice from which it was produced. As a thumb rule, the aroma is indicative of a carefully crafted feni. Coconut feni was produced before and then followed to adapt the same procedure for distilling the exotic cashew fruit. Coconut palms dot the coastline of Western India and Goa, whereas the cashew tree was an exotic species brought by the Portuguese to
Mr. Valentino Vaz
India. There is ambiguity about when and who started distilling fermented juice into a spirit, but the history of Fenny in Goa cannot be written without the mention of Mr. Valentino Vaz (M.D.) of Madame Rosa Distillery the leading distillers bottlers and Exporters of Cashew and Coconut Feni is the man who almost single handedly has been instrumental in upgrading the perception of Feni. Mr. Valentino Vaz realized the potential of Feni as an Exotic Aquavitae for the export market and got the production logistics organised for consistency without disturbing the traditional potstill method. Mr. Vaz conceptualizes the packaging of Big
Boss Cashew Feni and Godfather Coconut / Palm Feni in an handwoven package which was an instant hit among the domestic and International Tourists as a Exotic memento from Goa. Mr. Vaz has aggressively promoted fenny as a cocktail base too for which a fenny cocktail book has been printed and published. In year 1997 The US infringes on the goodwill of rights of Basmati rice. This fuels one gentleman Mr Valentino Vaz, founder of Madame Rosa Distillery, to come up with the concept of getting a GI registration for 'Feni'. The idea is taken to the Goa Chamber of Commerce. The beginning of the GI endeavour takes off, but the Indian Parliament is still to pass the GI of Goods Registration Act. In July 21st, 2006 the Goa Cashew Feni Distillers & Bottlers Association is formed and registered with the registrar of societies, as according to the GI Act, the GI cannot be accorded to any one individual.

The ship on commissioning will join Eastern Naval Command at Vizag, the sword arm of Indian Navy. RAdm (Retd.) Shekhar Mital NM, CMD GSL in his message said “This warship is the culmination of many years of inhouse design development and ship build techniques. The commissioning of this ship, marks a significant milestone in GSL's & nation's march towards indigenization and self reliance. It becomes more important as Sumedha is 200th ship indigenously built by GSL. GSL is the only yard which has delivered four classes of OPVs to both Navy and Coast Guard. Successive projects have witnessed considerable improvement, bringing applaud from users to Shipyard.” CMD further said “Yard is now undertaking massive modernisation at an outlay of Rs. 700 Crores, of which Rs. 400 Crores has already been spent. Yard is near ready to take on construction of new MCMV project, which will provide major push to Naval mine sweeping capabilities”. INS 'Sumedha' is the third of the new 105 meter class of NOPV and the largest ship constructed by GSL for the Indian Navy. This state of the art ship will help meet the increasing requirement of the Indian Navy for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty. This ship is suitable for monitoring sea lanes of communication, defence of offshore oil installations and other critical offshore national assets. The ship can also be deployed for escorting high value ships and fleet support operations.

Second IBW (India Bike Week) Held At Vagator this year, the two-day festival, held on January 17-18, 2014 in Goa, “was bigger and better and drew over 7,000 bikers from across India,” said the organisers .We looked at the format for various international biking events while organising the event, but there is no event like India Bike Week, that includes stunts, competitions, discussions on biking, latest trends and related subjects under one umbrella, said Martin. The list of two-wheelers on display at the event was awe inspiring, classic cruisers, sportsbikes, vintage bikes, modified bikes…. Being prime sponsors, Harley Davidson, drew the maximum number of riders. But was a strong turnout of BMWs, Royal Enfield, Triumph, Kawasaki and even one or two Hero Honda and other utility two-wheelers.

This year, Cashew Trail is filled with twelve days long festivities from 26th March 2014 to 6th April 2014. April 2013 celebrating Goa's most beloved fruit- the cashew. The stylish afternoon hosted by General Manager, Thomas Abraham was part of the resort's ten year anniversary celebrations and to thank the local community for a decade of continued support. On arrival, guests were greeted with a refreshing cashew sorbet and spicy roasted cashew nuts. The beverage repertoire offered a fusion of explosive flavours, blending spices and seasonal fruits with feni and urak to create the innovative Buenisima and Fenirinha among others. A cashew stomping ground and soulful music added an element of excitement to the afternoon, while a play area and picnicstyle lunch ensured the children had their fair share of fun too. H AM I Hampi the ruins of Vijayanagar once upon at time one of the most developed state in India. in Kanada it's called as HAMPE is a village in northern Karnataka state, India. HAMPI is located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, it continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, as well as several other monuments belonging to the old city. (In Southern region of India you will find more temples then rest of India) The ruins are today protected by UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi. In Humpy you can see an impressive array of Vijayanagara coins on display at the Archeology museum in Hampi. Each coin on the display kiosk is provided with magnifying lenses to take a close look at both sides of the coin. The name Hampi is derived from Pampa, which is the

old name of the Tungabhadra River on whose banks the city is built. . The name "Hampi" is an anglicized version of the Kannada Hampe (derived from Pampa). Over the years, it has also been referred to as Vijayanagara and Virupakshapura (from Virupaksha, the patron deity of the Vijayanagara rulers).

Temples are generously carved with mythical themes. May be because it was ( ... and still is! ) the monkey's kingdom, the images of monkeys are splendidly carved on the walls and pillars of the temples of Hampi. Hampi carries the marks of this ancient multi faith society. This is one of the places to see the religious aspects, especially of Hinduism, in a close proximity. The site is significant historically and architecturally. The topography abounds with large stones which have been used to make statues of Hindu deities. The Archaeological Survey of India continues to conduct excavations in the area, to discover additional artifacts and temples. Hampi is very great compared to other places on the basis of its architecture. The road leading to the temple was once a market where the horses were traded. Even today we can see the ruins of the market on both the sides of the road. The temple contains the images of foreigners like Persians selling horses. Hampi's climate is generally dry & hot. March to early June is the summer. Monsoon brings some wet weather that typically lasts from late June to early August. The colder period of the year is from November to February. Irrespective of the climate, Hampi is open for visitors all round the year. Tourist crowd (and prices too!) drops during t h e s u m m e r & r a i n y seasons. Day temperature in summer can reach close to 40 deg C (104 deg F). If you are planning to tour SPRING, 2014 ISSUE

during this season wear protective loose cotton cloths & headwear (hat or scarf). Carry plenty of drinking water during the tour. One of the bonuses of touring Hampi during off season is the quietness and the relative seclusion of the sites. While some buses from Goa and Bengaluru will drop you at the bus stand in Hampi Bazaar, you have to go to Hospet to catch most buses out. KSRTC has a daily Rajahamsa bus service between Hampi Bazaar and Bengaluru (Rs 280, nine hours) leaving at 8pm. The overnight sleeper bus to/from Goa (Rs 500), which runs November to March, is a popular option.
Amboli is a hill station in south Maharashtra, India. At an altitude of 690 meters it is the last hill station before the coastal highlands of Goa and a relatively unexplored one. Amboli lies in the Sahayadri Hills of Western India, one of the world's "Eco Hot-Spots" and it therefore abounds in a variety of fairly unique flora and fauna. The hilltop Amboli gives a fine bird's-eye view of the Konkan coast. Colonel Westrop developed Amboli as a hill station after the opening of the Ghat Road from the coastal town of Vengurla, now in southern Maharashtra, to Belgaum.

In reality there is no full-fledged wildlife sanctuary in Goa. Bondla is rather a Zoo located in the Ponda Taluka, the north eastern region of Goa. The lush green and strikingly beautiful foothills shelter this smallest wild life reserve of Goa. The total area of the park is 8 km2. Though they have maintained few rare spices in the Bondla but trip is very small unless you are nature lover and photographer, you can take a round of jungle around and catch some of the rare species of the birds in your camera; it needs lots of patience and concentration. The forests of this sanctuary consists of deciduous forests , evergreen vegetation patches, bamboo plantations along with other trees like Terninalia Crenulata (Matti), Rosewood, Largerstroemia, Kindall, Jamba, Mimisops, etc.

Initially, it was established as a zoo to protect the injured and orphaned animals. But today, it provides shelter not only to the leopards, bears and cobras but also to other animals including the Sambhar Deer, Indian Bison, Malabar Giant Squirrel and many species of snakes. It is also a treat for keen bird watchers and butterfly spotters. The sanctuary also has a botanical garden, a rose garden and a deer park. One can even head off for a deer safari at the deer park here. Besides, the park also offers elephant rides to tourists. A small Nature Education Centre has also been established here wherein educational wildlife videos are screened here for tourists. Belting out a hit number

I'm a firm believer in good, high quality accessories. I'm not very fussy about the outfit and I normally flip for the style rather than the brand, but with accessories the reverse is true. This is where I think, take stock and even plan in advance to buy an investment piece. And once you buy a good conversational item it's really fun to plan your wardrobe around the accessory instead of planning your accessories around the garments. Try it, the reverse engineering really works. For example my super amazing, very versatile MOSCHINO belt, or my thin gold John Galliano Belt- I keep on planning new looks and garments i can pair these belts with and sometimes the results are quite stunning.Irrespective of your body shape and size- there is a belt out there for each one of us. But there are some sure-fire ways to rock a belt.
With a bubble dress. I love the way a belt accentuates the waist against the bulbous bottom of a voluminous dress. It also prevents you from looking boxy and shapeless. 56

4 A b e l t i s a g r e a t d e f i n e r especially for plump, curvy or 'generously proportioned' girls. All that is needed is to get over the belt phobia and get the proportion right. You cannot get away with a very thin belt. It will disappear in your folds. You need to steer away from oddly oversized belts as they will bring focus to the midriff. An average sized belt over a chiffon or georgette kaftan, kurti or a silk shirt will look graceful and add the much needed structure.
5 One key point to be kept is mind is that the size of the belt should be inversely proportional to the size of other accessories or costume jewellery because the last thing that you want is two strong accessories engaging in a battle for attention. So keep the jewellery to a minimum or dainty with a super broad belt and bolder accessories like a statement necklace or shoulder duster earrings with ribbon thin belts. Just keep this in mind and you will never go wrong. So apni peti baandh lejiye, buckle up and get ready for the ride...........

Reduce, re-use, recycle...there are many ways to consume less! Plastic is something most people are trying to cut back on. Yes, plastic is recyclable for the most part, but it is still something that leaches toxins. Our idea is to spread the awareness amongst the public in general to help them to reduce the use of plastic. We have following tips which will help you to decide the best. 1. Get rid of plastic water bottles: Buying packaged drinking water constantly will increase the bottle garbage, when you're going out you can carry a sustainable and reusable water bottle 2. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store: By bringing your own bags you're not only avoiding plastic, but saving money as many stores now charge for bags. 4. Visit your local farmer's market: When you choose local and organic food you're making your meal more sustainable. Another advantage is that your produce doesn't come prepackaged so when you bring your bag with you, you won't be bringing any plastic home. 5. Bring your own sustainable coffee mug: If you need you're on the go coffee, carry your own mug. By doing this you'll not only avoid the waste that comes with a disposable cup, but most coffee chains give you a discount for bringing your own mug. 6. Each year, most individuals from different parts of the world make New Year's resolution related to fitness. Unfortunately most of the confidence falls apart after a month or so and only a f e w f o l l o w t h r o u g h w i t h t h e i r resolutions. Some of the common reasons the unsuccessful individuals give are lack of time, lack of motivation, travel, and lack of energy. Whatever your lifestyle may be, there is always a way to plan and follow your resolutions. And, one most important step for a successful change is, setting goals. Build successive and progressive
short-term goals to reach long-term goals. Instead of setting a goal for a month, set a goal for a week and reach you monthly goal by simply focusing and achieving your weekly goal. Consider the characteristics of effective goals that are easy to remember with the acronym SMART.
SPECIFIC Goals should be unambiguous. Clearly describe the activity you want to accomplish. Be prepared with what aspect of fitness you want to achieve. For example, improve strength, improve flexibility. Be certain to follow only that.
MEASURABLE Goals should be measurable; you should be able to reflect if the goal is accomplished or not. For example, instead of stating a desire to become “fit set a goal to exercise for half an SPRING, 2014 ISSUE

hour a day. These kinds of goals are measurable and will eventually move you towards your ultimate goal.
ACTION BASED Goals should be focused on what you w i l l d o r a t h e r t h a n s o l e l y o n outcomes. For example focus on an action rather than focusing only on the outcome of improving fitness. Focus on each step that will take you closer to your goal rather than focusing only on the goal.
REALISTIC Set short-term goals, in particular, should be within your reach. Starting out gradually and building your exercise program will help promote ongoing success. For example, if your goal is improve strength, start with bodyweight exercises and only then progress to lifting weights.
TIME ANCHORED Goals should be linked to a specific time frame rather than being open ended. For example, the time frame is for the coming week. Taking time to reflect on what you really want to achieve will transform this general concept into practical SMART goals. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a balanced exercise program, including Cardiorespiratory (aerobic) exercise, resistance training and flexibility exercises, as well as neuromotor exercise training for older adults and those at risk of falling.
