Introduction. The importance.  The aim.  The problems. 

Staff involved&contact detail. Professor Graeme Robertson.  Dr.Roy Murray.  Ian Kininminth.  Peter Eckersley.  Angoelo Ariyaratnan. 

My guide to do. Useful lectures in Muresk.  Trip field. -Waterwise workshop-Gingin. -Stratejic land use analysis workshop-Albany. 

Function of land. Production of food, fuel, fibre.  Store of wealth for individuals, community.  Storage and protection of evidence from historical  A buffer, filter for chemical pollutants. 

Agricultural land use planning. 

Definition .

Goals

Role

Steps of land use planning.           

Identify issues/problems Establish goals and term of reference. Organize the work. Analyse the problems. Identify opportunities for change. Land suitability evaluation. Appraisal of alternatives. Choose the best option. Prepare the land use plan. Implement the plan. Monitor and revise the plan.

Case studies of Agri.LUP in WA. Climate.  Salinity.  Economic analysis.  Social analysis. 

Existing climate and land suitability for chickpeas

Potential climate change impact on chickpeas in 2050

Plant species to be analyses Determined with regional stakeholder group:  Trees: Blue gums & Pinus pinaster  Grains: Noodle wheat & barley  Pulses: Lupin, faba beans, chickpeas  Other: Canola

Case studies of Agri.in Iraq Climate change -weather -winds -Rainfall -Temperature

Salinity

-60% of agricultural land to be affected by salinity -Absence of drainage since 1985 - cost to drain the land about $500/Donam -50% of irrigated areas were degraded by waterlogging& salinity

Social impact other issues include - Low education level of farmers -unpaved road

-No, hospital

-No,telephone - Stopping electric power for Agri. Pumping - No, healthy water

Example How to scheme land use planning

Economic evaluation Definition  Steps -Identify area under scheme -Estimate benefits & cost -Undertake economic evaluation(on farm &over all) - Estimate changes in future LMS 

Case studies Evaluation of forest project in Iraq -Areas 10 000/ Donam -1000/Donam to plant/ year -30 years age of project -First cutting after 10 years -second cutting after 10 years 3__donam -Productivity 10 m ID NPV: 1346 E.annuity: 541.3

Summary     

LUP necessary to achieve economic, social & environmental objectives for using land Many problems in WA are similar in Iraq Good information is required to conduct LUP in Iraq e.g. about soils, social, economic etc Also need to develop skills, methods & expert guidance Evaluation of projects are necessary to know costs, revenues and profits exactly and to avoid inflation in future By using evaluation of projects we will know the best method for investment

Recommendation Establish a department of land use planning in Ministry of Agriculture in Iraqi which has planners, soil scientists, economists and extension experts in order to look after natural resources in all of Iraq
