Greetings! India’s varna system of dividing work “Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra” has been misunderstood as the caste system leading to centuries of looking down upon certain sects of work and making a living. While we take pride in copying most of the western practices in our life, accepting and respecting people doing various kinds of work has not made much of a head-way in India. Time to accept people for what they do to our lives! Time to acknowledge dignity in every work! Cheers Rajiv Khurana action@retyrement.com

retyremag The Dignity of Labour The dignity of labor or dignity of work, is the philosophy that all types of jobs are treated equally, and no occupation is considered superior. Though one's occupation for his or her livelihood involves physical work or mental labour, it is held that the job carries dignity compared to the jobs that involve more intellect than body. Social reformers such as Basava and his contemporary Sharanas, as well as Mahatma Gandhi, were prominent advocates of the dignity of labour.

retyremag The Dignity of Labour Four young men, unemployed, Ran a concern, self-employed, Without much of publicity, In a remote corner of a city. They went to carry, Dead ones from the city, To bury a dead, Or burn it red.
Headside of the dead, Always one pair carried, While legside of it, Another gave a lift. One day, they fought, As each pair thought, Why two felt superior, And let another inferior? They dropped the dead, Down on the road, To assert their rights, To change their sides.
An old passerby, Just heard their cry, And ridiculed their action, That brought this inaction.
'In the world of professions, The least one was this, As none came forward, For this, deemed backward.' 'What if? Leg or head, One and the same for the dead. Dignity of labour, you'll find, Whatever job be, never mind.' They took the coffin, O'ver their shoulders again, Keeping in mind, ever, The dignity of labour. Rajaram Ramachandran

PAKORA a P.E.S.T. analysis Rajiv Khurana www.rajivkhurana.com Politics in India is great. Lesser mortals like me, who hardly understand it, can still make some batter of the matter. Some of them made fun of selling tea and in the aftermath of heat and sTEAm, a CM boiled himself to become a PM. Some again tried to make fun of an everyday refreshment. They tried and fried a storm in the kadhaai. Out popped, the humble Pakora, catapulted by IIC – Ignorant & Irrelevant Chamchas. TEA is already here. Thriving. Enthusing. Actualizing. Let’s check the PEST of Pakora – The Political, Social, Economic and Technological impact.

retyremag Political Look at the employment it may generate. India has a confirmed population of 1.3 Billion People. Humungous demographic dividend for the vote bank politics. Imagine, ONE PAKORA shop for every two thousand people. We need close to 6,50,000 entrepreneurs to lead from the front in our STAND-UP INDIA and START-UP INDIA initiatives. Add 1 or 2 chottus and tambis, we have straightaway created employment for around 2 million people. Can Indian Railways match this with their self-professed great opening of 89000 vacancies. How about the indirect employment? The humble Pakora touches each Industry, Service and Agricultural segments in terms of buy and supply. Read more in the Economic dimension. Time to create a Ministry of Pakoras to spearhead the nation changing initiative.

Economic Our FM overlooked the Power of Pakora while presenting the budget. Look at the numbers: If one humble Pakora Start-up sells a minimum of 20KG of Pakoras every day, then how much shall be sold by 6,50,000 entrepreneurs in a year? 4,7545,000,000 KGs. Whew! Think, how much of Besan or other material for batter shall be needed? How many KGs of vegetable and non-vegetable material is needed? How about all types of oil, masalas, utensils, chutneys, sauces, GAS etc, .etc.? We need equipment, logistics, finances (LOUs…hmm…ok!). Calculate the indirect employment that gets generated. The economic revival of India could be around the corner. The humble Pakora can be a GAME CHANGER. Only some BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY is needed. Leave aside, THRIVING ON CHAOS. This is THE ROAD AHEAD. Soon you will say IT HAPPENED IN INDIA. We need MAVERICKS AT WORK.

retyremag Social Pakora is a levelizer. Known by various names, important being Bhajjia, it has numerous imported adaptations like Tempura or Haggis Pakoda. Essence remains the same. Make a batter. Put some vegetables, pieces of dead fish, animals or birds or even insects. Fry them and try them. No one would have just one. This is enjoyed more in the company of friends and family. Promoting Pakora shall bring the missing dignity of work amongst the Indian Educated Youth too. For long, they have been trying to get a sweeper’s job after their Engineering or MBA. Now, with their start-up, they can easily position themselves as the FOUNDER-CEO, REFRESHMENTS SOLUTIONS INC. What a sea-change it shall be in the social and matrimonial market scenario! Campaigns like, “Har Meal Mein Pakora” can change the palate of India and put it on a very high pedestal of International acceptability and demand. High time to challenge the drab pizza.

Technological Pakora is a fry yum-yum. The dripping oil makes it delicious. Despite the sanitized versions like Onion Rings in MNC Outlets, we still prefer our old-paper wrapped Kaandha-bhajjia. For the HS variety – High Society Peepuls, the air-fryer is here and so are the roasting machines. To each, his own. What can technology bring to the Pakora enterprises. DRONE for sure can enhance the deliveries in every corner. Provided, our security paranoia can be settled. Each little drone hovering in Jhumaritallaya cannot head towards the PM house. Artificial Intelligence can do wonders. Let my son enjoy his mirchi, my Pakora need not be HOT with triple red-chillies! Big brother knows everything. My Pakora should taste the same, whenever and wherever I want it. With SaaS and Social Media tools, the startups have a great time ahead of them. Nano technology can easily broadcast the impact each Pakora may create while transiting into and outside the body.

The humble Pakora is a great bundle of innovation. Politicians fry the aspirations of people with their brain-less tongue wagging. Indians have survived all these creatures they themselves have created. While Media understands nothing and politicians will do nothing, let’s try to make something out of nothing. Pakora. Fill it, shut it and fry it with anything palatable. Enjoy the kick. Enjoy the burp. Take TEA alongside. It’s respectable. I am awaiting the signals from South Block to be appointed as the PM of India. I am no challenge to Modi ji. I just want to be the PM – Pakora Mentor. I don’t make. I take a stake.

retyremag Teach your kids about the dignity of labour - Rupal Patel We all want our children to grow into successful, confident and happy individuals -- we want them to have the best of everything. But we need to remember that teaching them good values and fostering gratitude in them for what they have, is also a big part of parenting. Five star hotels, travelling by plane, air-conditioned cars, mobile phones, cable television and so many other luxuries are an integral part of life today. Of course, parents who can afford such comforts want their children to share them too. At the same time, however, it is important to teach them to value their privileged lifestyle, as well as respect those who lead more modest ones -- they should be taught not to look down upon people who have less than they do, nor demean them in any way. Educate your children about the dignity of labour. Minimise the effects of peer pressure on your kids When it comes to daily routines, for instance, most children today are used to the domestic help taking care of all their chores. As a responsible parent, you need to teach them that maidservants are not to be ordered around -- they are to be spoken to politely and respected. Also, have the kids pick up after themselves as much as possible -- for example, you can have them carry their own plates into the kitchen after a meal, have them put washed and ironed clothes back into their closets, and get them to put their toys away after playtime sessions. In the process, they will earn respect for those expected to perform these tasks for them, responsibility and independence. At the same time, when your house staff is on leave, it will become easier for the children to manage things and you will have a helping hand. http://www.rediff.com/getahead/2007/jul/18child.htm

Children should be made aware of all those who make life easier for them -- they need to understand that while a watchman, a sweeper or an office peon may not have as cushy a job as either of their parents, all three have a vital role to play in society. They make life easier for others, and if everyone refused menial jobs, we'd have to start doing them ourselves. Impress upon your kids that an honest living is a respectable living, whether it is made in a plush office or by the roadside. They need to be appreciative of hard work and of those who play a role in society. Somebody once told me that a child refused to speak in Hindi because it was the 'servants' language'! Obviously, the youngster must have heard an adult say something to that effect. We are so lucky to live in a country that has so many diverse cultures, languages and religions and at the same time adapts Western comforts to make life easier for us and our kids need to know that. Children tend to discuss their parents' occupations and are sometimes ashamed of them because of what friends may say. This can happen at any age, to kids who are little more than toddlers, or then to teenagers. The son of a shopkeeper may wish his dad was a doctor like so-andso's, or a lawyer. Moreover, the children of domestic help are today growing up to obtain MBA degrees and secure jobs in the airlines -- for them to cope with their parents' humble occupations of sweeping and scrubbing the homes of the affluent, or then manning the gate of a housing complex, is difficult. They need to realise that education isn't the be-all and end-all of a respectable life; after all, it is through hard work that their parents were able to fund their academic activities.

And they will come to realise this as soon as the stigma attached to menial jobs is eliminated. How will it be eliminated? If you and your family learn to foster respect for those who make an honest living, no matter how. Must read for mothers wanting bright kids It's a wonderful thing to teach your children charity -- several parents have their kids donate old toys, books, clothes, school supplies etc to the needy. But make sure that they don't consider those at the receiving end to be below them. Take them for a visit to an orphanage and take some gifts for the underprivileged. Teach your kids to donate a small amount each month from their pocket money, and from their salaries when they grow up. Allow them to decide how much money to set aside and which needy person or institution they would like to help and in what manner. This will help them develop compassion, but it can also be a lesson in equality -- one who has less than you deserve your kindness and goodwill, but is not less important than you. Whatever you want your children to learn and whatever you say, always remember that your actions speak louder than your words. They are watching you and learning from you all the time. So the best way to teach them anything is to model them yourself. You are your children's best teacher and teaching them respect for others may be the best gift you ever give them.
